‘It’s time he gets the award’ Longtime Midsummer Days volunteer named Grand Marshal BY MEGAN BERGMAN NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

Parades ignite the many joys that summer brings. Smiles, waves and candy make their way down the line as floats drive by the people that come out to spend an hour or two watching the Midsummer Days parade in North Branch. For the past 20 years, one man has assisted with making sure everything gets set up and runs smoothly so those smiles and candy can be delivered without a hitch. A WORTHY GRAND MARSHAL Dave Reider will serve as this year’s grand marshal for the 94th Annual North Branch American Legion Post 85 Midsummer Days Parade. With 20 years of behind-the-scenes volunteer work setting up the city’s parade, he may know

a thing or two about taking the reins and leading the procession on its way as the grand marshal. “I do the complete line-up for the numbering system and everything for it,” Reider said. “The day of I go up there early in the morning and put numbers out on the streets. Then I also make sure they get out on the right street too.”

Jim Johnson, member of the American Legion Post 85, thinks that Reider is the man for the job. “You know, Dave has helped us with the Midsummer Days parade as far back as we can remember,” Johnson recalled, “and we just thought, ‘Well, with all of the help that he has given us,’ and he has done so much for different charities and things in North Branch, so we just thought, ‘Well, let’s ask Dave.’” Reider remembers what he said when they asked him to be grand marshal. “Don’t you have anyone else over there you can ask?” he chuckled. “But I’ll still go set it all up in the morning, and then go back up to the front to where I normally would stand.” Commander of the American Legion Post 85, Rick Hals, knew that Reider SEE MARSHAL, PAGE 8

Southern comfort meets the ‘Bold North’ Last week, one of my cousins and uncles stopped by for a quick visit as they headed up north to the family cabin. While originally living in Omaha, Nebraska, they have now spent a considerable number of years living in Arkansas. For this trip, they also had a friend of theirs, who admitted he had never been north of Missouri. Naturally, part of the conversation turned to the differences between the two areas of the country. Of course, accents were brought up as my cousin claims he hasn’t picked up a southern accent (he has). The difference in driving was another typical topic that was discussed, along with how Dairy Queen was expandWorth a ing down there, but wasn’t quite at the “a Thousand DQ in every town” status yet. But the most noticeable, and easily Words most humorous, topic happened when Bill we took them on a tour of mom and dad’s new house. When we reached the garage, Stickels III we were just standing around doing a little small talk when we noticed their friend was curiously eying a certain machine. “That’s a snowblower,” my cousin informed his friend. “A what? I thought it was some sort of weird tiller or something, but I couldn’t figure out what that chute was for,” he responded. So we had to describe about how in the winter, we can get so much snow we needed to remove it in a convenient way. “Ah, man, we just wait a day and let it melt,” he commented. “You mean it sticks around for the whole winter?” Being true Minnesotans, we had photos of last winter’s snow piles readily available as proof of what we were saying, but I’m not sure he completely believed them. Anyway, we had a good laugh about it, and it provided us with a little ammunition for future mocking – later on it was mentioned how he should come up in something like April, to which I added “Yeah, and we can teach you how to use a snowblower.” This exchange did provide a little bit of a superiority complex with us northerners. How in the world could anyone not recognize a snowblower? I’m sure people down south have at least seen video footage of snowstorms that featured people using a snowblower. But maybe casually seeing one on a TV screen is different than seeing one in person. And there was probably a little reference point to be considered. Here we are standing around wearing shorts on a warm, spring day. So why would someone expect to see a snowblower sitting in a garage this time of the year? Either way, it also got me thinking that there are probably several things from down south that would throw (no pun intended) me off as well. After all, just like he’s never been this far north, I’ve never visited his neck of the woods either. And I do remember as a kid having a bit of a culture shock just going down to St. Louis, Missouri. I suppose this could serve as a reminder that we are all different, and those differences are what make this country great. But on the other hand, it can just be one of those moments we hang onto for a good laugh at someone else’s expense. I should really write a reminder to take a video of our first snowstorm of the year and send it to him with a message of “wish you were here.” Bill Stickels III is editor of the Isanti-Chisago County Star. GUEST COLUMN

Wild coyotes or Father Factor? People comment on the good qualities of our family, and I tell them that it is because of my wife, our kids’ mother. I feel that our children would have been better raised by wild coyotes if it were not for their mother. Our five children are grown and raising their own families now. I am very proud of the impact they are making in their homes, and I feel fortunate that they have a more positive view of my role as a father. The “Father Factor” in homes, families and our society is powerful. Fathers dramatically impact several social issues in Focus America. When a father is not on Faith involved in the family, it has an effect on poverty, maternal Mark and child health, incarceration, crime, teen pregnancy, child Radeke abuse, drug and alcohol use, education and childhood obesity. Like myself, most fathers want to be a good parent to their children. Mistakes are made out of a lack of intentionality. I believe there are three things every Christian father must intentionally do to impact their homes: Feed, Seed and Lead. 1. Feed. The Bible talks about God’s words being sweeter than honey. Feed on scripture by reading the Bible every day. Talk and listen to the Lord throughout the day. You eat every day, and you must feed yourself spiritually every day. You do not have to be a Bible scholar to be an extraordinary father to your children. You just need to spend time with Jesus. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” 2. Seed. Plant into the lives of your children. Scatter seeds of encouragement, generous forgiveness, quick apologies, and show transpar-

METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS

ency. Your children will never forget the words you say to them through your tears, and they will never forget the grace you pour over them when you accept their apologies and forgive their failings. 3. Lead. Have high expectations. Harvey Mackay, author of “Outswimming the Sharks” tells this story of his father: “Jack Mackay taught me about time management. I still remember him telling me, ‘If you want to go fishing tomorrow, be on the dock at 2 p.m. sharp.’ There I was at 2:05 p.m., waving bon voyage to my dad who was driving away in the boat without his fishing buddy. Tough love, lesson learned.” Have high expectations and consistently lead in doing the right things even when it is difficult or unpopular. Ephesians 6:4 says, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” By feeding, seeding and leading in your home you will have Father Factor instead of letting the wild coyotes raise your children. Happy Father’s Day! Mark Radeke is pastor of River of Life Church, 150 Birch St. N. Suite 170, Cambridge. He can be reached at (612) 483-7419.

Winston Churchill once said, “I am always ready to learn, but I do not always like to be taught.” How quick most of us are – myself included – to offer advice or criticism to others, while not feeling quite as good when we are on the receiving end. If you read my articles on a regular basis you know I talk about leadership often, and by leaders you know I

mean ALL of us. Each of us influences someone whether you realize it or not, and the more opportunities you have to lead, the more careful we have to be not to fall in the trap of not liking to be taught. I don’t know what the status of the legislative process will be when this is printed, but I do know how frustrated many of us are as we have waited for some type of action to take place. As critical as I want to be regarding Minnesota government, I’m going to try and focus on the “learning” side of the quote and am hoping our elected representatives will do their part and help us understand why this gridlock

continues. Mr. Churchill didn’t always like being taught, but he learned over the course of his life how important it was to hear the honest truth. I’d encourage us to take this advice and listen to all sides of the story as we make decisions. Three good news briefs from Braham Schools: - Comparing district revenue and expenditure documents posted annually by all public school districts in the state, Braham spends LESS to educate each child than any of our 11 neighbors. - Braham’s four-year graduation rate (released just a few weeks ago) continues to outpace the state average by a

Daily aspirin use can reduce risk of heart attack and stroke — but consult a doctor first have had a previous heart attack or stroke should also discuss aspirin use with their physician for the prevention of a second event.

BY UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA UNEWS@UMN.EDU

There are 16,000 heart attacks and strokes in Minnesota every year, with cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death for both men and women. Many people take a daily aspirin to prevent a first heart attack or stroke. Russell Luepker with the University of Minnesota answers questions about risk factors for heart attacks and strokes, the health benefits of daily aspirin use and who should take aspirin daily for prevention.

Q: What is the recommended dosage and type of aspirin that is commonly prescribed? Dr. Luepker: Low-dose aspirin or baby aspirin is recommended. Enteric coated aspirin is thought by some to reduce ulcers but this is debated. Larger doses, such as adult size aspirin (325 mg), are also effective but have more side effects than low-dose aspirin (81 mg).

Q: What are you doing to promote awareness about heart health including daily aspirin use? Dr. Luepker: Many people take low-

Q: What are the risk factors for heart attacks and strokes? Dr. Luepker: The major risk fac-

tors include high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol, cigarette smoking and diabetes. There are many other risk factors including obesity, physical activity and triglycerides. A previous heart attack or stroke also significantly increases the likelihood of a second event.

Q: What are the health benefits of taking one aspirin per day? Dr. Luepker: Aspirin for the prevention of heart attacks and strokes has been well-studied over many years. Few bugs on windshield tell of insect loss BY JERRY VITALIS CHISAGO COUNTY MASTER GARDENER

Recent talks I’ve had about insects on crops reminded me of a Jan. 23 article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune by contributing writer and photographer Jim Williams. He wrote about the slow decline of insects, which are a main food source for birds. He refers to this as the “Windshield Phenomenon.” According to researchers, the bugs eaten by many birds and other animals are dwindling, as are some bird species. The decline is very slow, but it is constant. Though the bird decline has been mostly attributed to loss of habitat, what if it’s actually due to the loss of insects ? Recent studies in Canada focused on a perceived reduction in tree swallow numbers. That species feeds exclusively on flying insects. Birds that subsist mostly on grains and fruit are showing no decline. Data from a study in Puerto Rico were compared with data from 1976. The abundance of insects had fallen by 99 percent. Scientists attribute the decline in Puerto Rico to an increase in forest temperatures of just under 4 degrees F. over the past 40 years. Studies in Britain, Germany, Singapore, Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico and Australia also found these same results. According to Audubon Minnesota, a quarter of our resident summer bird species are threatened with the need to move north as the climate warms. If insects move north to find suitable temperatures, birds would follow. And why does Jim Williams refer to this phenomenon known worldwide as the “Windshield Phenomenon?” On a trip this past August to Grand Marais, he’d driven 500 miles and only had four insect smears on his windshield. “I couldn’t recall when that last happened,” he said. “The change was insidious.” Jerry Vitalis is a Chisago County Master Gardener.

through summer

In case you haven’t heard, both the North Branch Area Education Center and the high school are closed this summer for construction. High school and middle school business are being conducted from the middle school (38431 Lincoln Trail, North Branch. Hours: 7 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.), and Sunrise and district business are being conducted at Sunrise (37775 Grand Ave., North Branch. Hours 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.). Signs have been posted at each of these sites directing visitors to the proper location. With these closures this summer, it is a great time to unveil online enrollment for the first time at North Branch NB School Area Public Schools (NBAPS). Months of work by technology department staff News and others have resulted in this wonderful option for families considering Dr. Deb enrollment at NBAPS. You can check it out at www.isd138. Henton org/enrolltoday. The enrollment center homepage provides each prospective family with its options for enrollment, accompanied by large easy-to-read graphic links. It also provides links to common forms families may need as part of the enrollment process. There is also a link to enrollment contacts for each site and program in case families have questions during the on-line enrollment process. Visitors will also find links to NBAPS program and transportation information. Once visitors click on an enrollment process (kindergarten, new family, inter-district transfer, etc.), subsequent pages will guide them through the entire process. Best of all, enrollment can now be completed from any device, any time of day, from anywhere, provided there is access to the internet. Of course, if families prefer to enroll in person they can always do so at Sunrise. This is just one of a variety of ways NBAPS is making its schools and programs more attractive and convenient for new families and contributing to the larger goal of doing our part to help the community grow and flourish. Dr. Deb Henton is superintendent of North Branch Area Public Schools.

us with the Midsummer Days parade as far back as we can remember,” Johnson recalled, “and we just thought, ‘Well, with all of the help that he has given us,’ and he has done so much for different charities and things in North Branch, so we just thought, ‘Well, let’s ask Dave.’” Reider remembers what he said when they asked him to be grand marshal. “Don’t you have anyone else over there you can ask?” he chuckled. “But I’ll still go set it all up in the morning, and then go back up to the front to where I normally would stand.” Commander of the American Legion Post 85, Rick Hals, knew that Reider was the one to lead the way this year. He believes Reider is completely deserving of this year’s grand marshal award. “I said, ‘Well, Dave Reider has done so much for us over the last 15-20 years, it’s time he gets the award,’” Hals said. “He does so much for this community.”

‘Dave Reider has done so much for us over the last 15-20 years, it’s time he gets the award. He does so much for this community.’ Rick Hals American Legion Post 85 Commander SMALL TOWN LIFE – BIG HEART Reider, a North Branch business owner of Reider Machines since 1982, has worked and lived the small-town life. He and his wife Amy have five children and include them in giving back to the community. It is just another way Reider enjoys the feeling of being a part of the festivities. “I do a lot of other things for the town like the Relay for Life stuff and the Lions Club,” he said, “We have different other things we do, but my kids have always pitched in and helped me

do what we do. I drag them into all of it. But we do a lot together and everyone helps out.” Reider believes the small community of people that embodies the city of North Branch is something to be proud of. “The community does stick together quite a bit; it does,” he said. “It’s a big town and people do stick together and help out, and I enjoy seeing that. Just getting out and seeing everyone is great. It’s work, but it’s fun work, and I enjoy it.” MIDSUMMER DAYS A FIVE-DAY FEST North Branch’s Midsummer Days begins on Wednesday, June 19, and runs through Sunday, June 23, when the parade will commence at 2 p.m. Many events and festivities can be enjoyed during the week such as family bingo, street dances, raffle, carnival rides and many more family-friendly activities for all to enjoy. that a contract the city signed with the county back in 2012 is still valid until the end of 2019. That contract does have a 180day notice of cancellation clause in it; however, the city insists that no notice has been given. According to Fry, back in February of 2019 the county sent a letter to the city claiming the city had defaulted on portions of the 2012 contract; however, Fry said that “no language” was included that could be construed as a 180-day cancellation notice. “They (the county) called out different paragraphs and said ‘We’re claiming a default under this paragraph, and we’re claiming a default under that paragraph,’” Fry said. “But that in itself doesn’t cancel the 2012 contract.” Even if the letter did include a cancellation notice, city council member

Kathy Blomquist said that would still mean the city wouldn’t be cut off until sometime in September. Council member Brian Voss added that the letter also wasn’t official since it was sent by the county administrator, but there was never a vote by the commissioners directing the letter and/or cancellation notice be sent. “This is the 2012 agreement,” mayor Jim Swenson said, holding up a piece of paper and looking directly into the audience. “It’s been gone over and proven by our city attorney that it is still valid.” Currently, Fry and Swenson said, there is a rough draft of a long-term agreement in the works; however, Fry added, “in essence, it is very much the same agreement that was presented to the city back in December, with very little modification and certainly no recognition of the things we had asked for.”

Legislators nix funding for Northern Lights Express train BY JENNIFER YOCUM-STANS HINCKLEY NEWS

This year’s state legislative session yielded no funds for the $550 million high-speed passenger rail service Northern Lights Express (NLX). The Northern Lights Express is a proposed passenger rail train from the Twin Cities to Duluth. Current plans are for a 152-mile line with stops in Minneapolis, Coon Rapids, Cambridge, Hinckley and Duluth/Superior. The NLX Alliance Board met on May 22 in the Pine County Board Room. John Ongoro, of St. Louis County Government Relations, told the board the legislative session started with a lot of hope and encouraging words from leadership regarding transparency with the public in hopes there would be no problems toward the end of the session. “Unfortunately, they fell into the same trap again,” Ongoro said. The proposed bill, which included a $1.5 billion bond, passed through the

House committee, but, according to Ongoro, the committee had been “sitting on it,” waiting until closer to the end of the session hoping there would be a bonding bill. Since bonding years are every other year, and 2019 is not a normal bonding year, they were hoping there would be an emergency bonding bill. State funding is required to unlock federal funding which would pay for the majority of the project on an 80-20 percentage. Ken Buehler, of the St. Louis & Lake Counties Regional Railroad Authority, reported that Derrick James, of Amtrack, said he was pleased with what was going on in Minnesota. Alliance board member Andrew Johnson, of the Minneapolis City Council, reported that Minneapolis voted to reauthorize the participation agreement and approved funding for this year. “We stand ready to help in any way we can to move Hennepin County back

in the same direction,” Buehler said. Buehler also told the board that he and others met with Mary Murphy, Representative for House District 3B, which includes portions of Lake and St. Louis counties. According to Buehler, Rep. Murphy proposed a $46 million bill for rail projects overall, with NLX being specified. He asked the board to put a request together so the RRA could submit next year’s bonding request, which must be in by June 14. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the next steps for the NLX project include assembling funds for construction, completing final design work, completing negotiations with BNSF and other property owners, and acquiring right-of-way for stations. The first construction projects will likely be grade crossing improvements, many of which may be constructed prior to the completion of trail improvements or the construction of stations.

Consider ‘cover crop’ to salvage unplanted fields BY SUSAN HUMBLE CHISAGO SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

Thanks to prolonged rain and flooding, many fields will go unplanted this year. Farmers in this situation should weigh not only their program and insurance options (prevented planting), but also think about how best to protect the soil and nutrients in their fields to be used the next planting season. Planting cover crops can provide an array of benefits the remainder of the season. Cover crops can capture applied nutrients, fix nitrogen, build organic matter, control weeds, control erosion and/or improve soil quality. They can also build considerable yield potential for the following crops. BUILDING VERSUS LOSING TOPSOIL As excessive rainfall runoff or flood waters cut across unprotected fields, the topsoil may have been lost from erosion and scouring. As productive topsoil is lost, so too are the nutrients, organic matter and soil biology, reducing the productivity of the field. The above-ground biomass, or vegetation, of cover crops will help protect the soil from further sun, wind and water damage. Cover crops, especially if notilled, will add organic biomass both above and below ground to rebuild topsoil quicker than if left to grow weeds

or especially if left with no cover. Avoid removing biomass from the field by harvesting for forage or grain, which will reduce the organic matter benefits, and instead consider killing or mowing prior to seed-head formation, particularly if reseeding could be incompatible with subsequent crops. This will also ensure rapid decomposition and leave more nutrients in the below-ground plant material that are available to soil organisms and subsequent crops. Always check with your crop insurance agent, Risk Management Agency (RMA), and Farm Service Agency (FSA) on restrictions for haying, grazing, and harvesting cover crops on prevented planting acres. SOIL BIOLOGY, STRUCTURE, AND COMPACTION Many fields saturated for long periods lose soil organisms that create soil macro-pores and cycle nutrients. The saturated fields also lose beneficial soil biology, such as mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobia bacteria that build structure. Without these organisms, the soils are very susceptible to compaction, crusting and high bulk density problems. Some fields may be so compacted that remediation activities are needed. However, cover crops, whether used alone or in conjunction with other compaction remediation activities, are essential to rebuild healthy soil struc-

ture. The roots of cover crops help to penetrate compacted zones, hold soil aggregates together and sustain healthy organisms to restore soil structure. Growing roots are essential to reestablish the mycorrhizae in the soil and to create pathways for air and water to move through the soil profile, which are key components to restoring the soil’s functional properties and will keep the pathways open to result in a quicker fix of the compacted layers. BUILDING VERSUS LOSING NITROGEN Cover crops can build organic nitrogen, and/or harness residual nitrogen in the soil. A legume or legume mix planted in early summer can help fix nitrogen for the next cash crop. Make sure all legume seed is properly inoculated. Cover crops, including annual grasses and brassicas, can scavenge residual nitrogen from the soil, and even more in situations where manure or preplant nutrients have been recently applied. Additionally, this results in a more rapid gain in total soil biomass and a higher total nutrient availability for subsequent crops. COVER CROP SPECIES GUIDANCE Cover crop selection and management should focus on maximizing both above- and below-ground biomass and

encouraging nutrient cycling as deep in the soil profile as possible. Choosing a mix of a grass with a fibrous root system and a legume or brassica with a taproot will usually provide the widest range of benefits. Planting flowering cover crops such as buckwheat or brassicas can be a valuable food source for a wide variety of pollinators. Leaving the growth and/ or the grain can be a very valuable winter food source for a wide variety of wildlife. Legumes alone or in combination with grasses can provide quicker soil biology/biota restoration and nitrogen fixation. Growth and development of the legume is directly related to nitrogen fixation. An early summer-planted legume, such as cow peas, will grow rapidly and fix a good amount of nitrogen prior to a killing frost when it will be terminated. For later plantings, an overwintering legume such as red clover should be considered. Brassicas provide excellent weed control and nitrogen scavenging potential. The taproots are excellent at penetrating tillage pans and dense soil layers. However, planting them early (prior to August) may cause them to bolt and produce seed. Morke soars above the rest, claims pole vault title BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

There was an unusual air of optimism surrounding the field of Class AA girls pole vaulters during the state meet last Saturday. With the shocking development of two-time state champion and state record-holder Julia Fixsen, of Mounds View, failing to qualify for state the week before, the chance was there for any of the 16 qualifiers to take the title. That optimism, however, didn’t last too long as Cambridge-Isanti’s Char Morke quickly gave notice that she was determined that if anyone would sit in the vacated throne as queen of the pole vault, it would be her. “I really feel bad for Julia because she is such an amazing person and amazing athlete,” Morke said of Fixsen, who she has been friends with for many years dating back to when the two competed in gymnastics for the Twin Cities Twisters club. “But I know she is still going to do great things in the future, so I’m excited about winning state.” “I’m so thrilled for you,” Fixsen told Morke as the two hugged after the awards ceremony. “This was your moment to shine.” And shine she did. After passing on the opening 10foot height, the senior easily cleared five-straight heights without even gently brushing part of her uniform on the bar. Meanwhile, the rest of the competition tried to keep up, relying on a combination of determination and a bit of luck. “I felt confident coming into the meet because I knew I had a higher personal record than some of the other girls,” Morke said. “So I knew as long as I focused on myself and not on things I couldn’t control the outcome would be positive.” After the bar reached 11 feet, 6 inches, half of the field had been eliminated, leaving a final eight that only included one other vaulter not hav-

ing a failed attempt at some point. Another five bowed out at 11 feet, 9 inches, leaving just Morke and two others to attempt clearing 12 feet. Having the best qualifying height coming into state, Morke had the luxury of watching the other two competitors make their first attempt before having to step onto the runway herself, with both of them missing that first attempt. Once again, Morke literally rose to the occasion, easily clearing the bar, but this time punctuating it with a double fist-pump as she dropped back down to earth. “I went over, saw the bar and threw my pole and I could just see I was over it,” Morke said. “I knew that making that on my first attempt was going to make the meet.” Then it was just waiting to see if one or both of the two remaining would also clear 12 feet and thus extend the competition to the next height. But despite loud encouragement from the crowd, including Fixsen and Morke themselves (“Julia was there cheering for everyone, and I wanted to do

the same,” Morke explained), the two remaining athletes couldn’t get over the bar, thus giving Morke the state championship. For an encore, Morke then cleared 12 feet, 4 inches, again on her first attempt. But that was as far as it went, as three attempts at 12 feet, 7 inches fell short. The senior won’t have much time to bask in the glory of her title, however. Morke leaves for basic training for the Naval Academy in two weeks. When asked what she would be doing in those two weeks, Morke had an unusual response. “I have to get into shape,” she said with a laugh before explaining “I’m not good at distance running, and I will be doing a lot of that down there.” Morke also stated that there won’t be any more pole vaulting, at least in the near future, “but that’s okay. I’ll be able to do enough of that at the Academy once the college season begins.” BLUEJACKETS DO WELL AT STATE Besides Morke, the Bluejacket boys and girls track team

had a very busy and overall successful state meet. Blaze Krueger was again a double-medalist after taking fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Gaven Ziebarth collected three medals by coming in eighth in the 100 dash and being part of the eighth-place 4x200 relay, which was also comprised of Jacob Steinbring, Dylan Larson and Dylan Jones; and seventh-place 4x100 relay, along with teammates Kaden Slepic, Jones and Steinbring. Two of the three boys pole vaulters who competed at state came away with a medal as Joseph Stauffer took fourth and Ethan Hintermeister came in seventh. The final

vaulter, Amadeus McElrath, finished in 11th. On the girls side, the 4x200 relay team comprised of Aiyana Knight, Jacqueline Olander, Chloe Nelson and Anika Larson finished in seventh with a new school record. And while the 4x100 relay team of Kaylee Clement, Knight, Olander and Morke failed to advance to the finals, they did set a new school record at 49.74. Also competing at state, but unfortunately not advancing to the podium, were Dylan Jones (14th, 200), AnnaGrace Nelson (13th, high jump and triple jump) and Kaylee Clement (18th, 100).

Hello, My name is Brandy Wempner. I have been the general manager of the GrandStay Hotel in Cambridge for almost six years. I enjoy working in the Cambridge community and offering a place for families to come and relax. I am an Army wife and I have a 14-year-old daughter. We have lived in Princeton for 16 years.

Being part of the Chamber is exciting. My goal is to help make the Cambridge / Isanti area an intriguing place for new business and for travelers to discover a new destination. There are so many opportunities just a short distance from the cities that many do not know about. Working together as a team with other members gives me a sense of belonging. I look forward to working in these communities and with the Chamber for many more years.

Sons of Norway offer Midsommernatt meal CONTRIBUTED SONS OF NORWAY

Vennelag 1-546 of Sons of Norway will celebrate Sankt Hans Dag (St. John’s Day), also called Midsommernatt (Midsummer’s Eve), on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lindstrom Community Center, 13292 Sylvan Avenue, Lindstrom. The public is always welcome. The event will offer an explanation of the meaning of Midsommernatt, which in Norway is a national celebration with bonfires and all-night parties. Vennelag’s party won’t last all night – and there won’t be a bonfire – but the group plans to have an enjoyable time. Hot dogs, buns and beverages will be furnished, but attendees are asked to bring a dish for the food table such as baked beans, salads, pickles, chips or desserts. The meal is at 6:30 p.m., followed by a video about Edvard Grieg, a Norwegian composer, who is one of Norway’s most influential musicians. Birthday cake will also be served in honor of his 176th birthday. Hosts for the evening are Sheila and Arlen Strehlo and Roger Machmeier.

Heritage Players announce cast for ‘Into the Woods’ play CONTRIBUTED HERITAGE PLAYERS

The Pine City Heritage Players held two nights of auditions last month in search of the right actors to fill out the roles for this summer’s highly anticipated production of “Into the Woods.” The east central Minnesota region didn’t disappoint with over 40 actors making an appearance at the auditions. They traveled in from Pine City, Rush City, Isanti, North Branch, Cambridge, Mora, Hinckley and beyond for an opportunity to showcase their talents for one of the coveted roles for the production (see cast list below). “We were overwhelmed and encouraged not only by the number of people that auditioned for the show, but also the high caliber of talent that was presented,” said Jay Schueller, director for the production. “It was a long evening of decision-making to put together the cast list, but I’m confident that we’ve assembled the right combination of CAST LIST (By order of appearance) Narrator Miranda Burger Cinderella Rachel Bigelow Jack Nathan Kleppe Jack’s Mother Mary Ellen Sauser Baker Jon Bigelow Baker’s Wife Allie Gosen Cinderella’s Stepmother Jennifer Hansmann Florinda McKenzie Clemens Lucinda Signe Reistad Cinderella’s Father Nick Basta

characters for this show.” The full cast came together for the first time for a read-through on Sunday, June 2, and enjoyed music and laughs together. “I’ve always wanted to audition for a Heritage Players show,” said Julie Samuelson, a newcomer to the group around the table. “It was on my bucket list before I was ‘too old.’ Now I find it funny that I’m cast as Granny – the oldest character in the show.” The musical will perform July 18-21 in the Pine City High School Auditorium. Volunteers for backstage, box office, set construction, costumes and publicity are welcome. Those interested in volunteering should email heritageplayers@gmail.com and share what area they’d like to help in. The Pine City Heritage Players’ mission is to enrich, educate and entertain the community by providing a superior theater experience.

The sport of purebred dogs, once the purview of the wealthy and privileged, has become the all-American family sport, with competition between amateur, professionals, youngsters, men and women. The members of the Anoka County Minnesota Kennel Club and the Cambridge Minnesota Kennel Club invite the public to celebrate the world of purebred dogs at the four-day Summer Solstice Cluster Dog Shows held June 20-23 at the Isanti County Fairgrounds, 3101 NE Highway 95, Cambridge. There is no admission charge to the public. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy seeing the dogs and visiting with breeders and exhibitors. On each day of the show it’s possible to see over 1,200 dogs representing the very best of as many as 150 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. More than 10 local motels fill to capacity with dogs, owners, handlers and judges during the Cluster. In addition, local restaurants host daily meals for attendees and dog-related celebrations and social events. Vendors at the fairgrounds sell dog-related wares. Special events include dock diving, barn hunt and fast cat. For information about the times when a breed will be judged, check the week before the show at www. onofrio.com; click on “Show Information;” click on “Closed Shows;” scroll to “Anoka County Minnesota Ken-

Ask A Trooper: What are the rules for operating mopeds? Question: Moped rentals are being considered in my city. Can you talk about the laws and rules that cover moped operations and if insurance is required on them? What is the difference between a moped and motor scooter? Answer: Great question, as I am starting to see more mopeds on our roadways. A moped is a vehicle that is propelled by a motor of a capacity of 50cc or less, and a maximum of two brake horse power, which is capable of a maximum speed of not more than 30 mph on a flat surface. Ask a Any person who has a valid Minnesota Trooper driver’s license may opSgt. Neil erate a moped without taking the moped test. Dickenson Anyone without a driver’s license, regardless of age, must obtain a moped operator’s permit. Additional information about moped permit requirements is online in the Motorcycle Manual. A motorized foot scooter is capable of no more than 15 mph and has no more than two 12-inch or smaller diameter wheels. All operators of motorized foot scooters must be 12 years of age or older to operate one legally. No passengers may ride on motorized foot scooters. When operating a moped or motorized bike in Minnesota, you must follow the following moped-specific rules: • You may not ride on bicycle lanes, trails, or interstate freeways. • You must operate as close to the right side of the road as possible. • You must wear a helmet if you are younger than 18 years old. • The moped must have a working headlight and taillight for nighttime operation. • If you are younger than 16 years old,

you may not ride with passengers unless the passenger is a parent/guardian. Also, mopeds must be registered in Minnesota. A title of proof of sale of the moped is required to register it, along with a photo. Mopeds are required to have license plates and proof of motorcycle liability insurance. Sgt.
