Dr. Queener resigns as C-I superintendent BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

The May 23 Cambridge-Isanti school board meeting was moving along, with nothing unusual happening. Then came a last-minute agenda item – the last item before adjourning – which contained a bombshell unexpectedly dropped on almost the entire room. “It is with very mixed emotions that I’m informing the school board that I will be stepping down as superintendent,” Dr. Ray Queener said in introducing the agenda item. “It’s mixed emotions because while it’s hard to say so long to a great organization and a wonderful school district, I’m excited for an opportunity to be a senior consultant for TeamWorks International.” In making the announcement, Queener paid high

compliments to the staff he will be leaving. “When I sat at the interview table six years ago, I told the then-superintendent, ‘I don’t know how Cambridge-Isanti schools does what it does with the challenging financial situation.’ I’ve come to know the staff over the last six years. Course of action: Cambridge couple’s mini golf dream coming true made his move. He showed it to his wife and told her his plans. “I thought she’d blow me off, but she said, ‘Do it. Really. Do it.’” The plan is to create a miniature golf course, water attraction, volleyball court, indoor arcade, party room and concession stand in the first phase of development.

We hear it all the time: “There’s nothing to do around here.” Some people complain on social media – others do something about it. Mike and Michelle Hout, of Cambridge, took a long-time dream and decided to make it happen – to build a miniature golf course and entertainment center in Cambridge. “We looked at what this community could use,” Mike said. “There’s nothing for the kids. They don’t want to go sit in a movie – they want to do things outdoors. We said, ‘What can we do that’s going to help the youth of the community? What can we do to help the seniors at the same time?’” Miniature golf was a no-brainer for Hout. “This has always been a little dream of mine,” he said. “I grew up next to Goony Golf in Spring Lake Park. I’d ride my bike and spend time there

Mike Hout points out progress on his proposed miniature golf course on Opportunity Boulevard west of Cub Foods in Cambridge.

THE HOLE STORY To kick off the project, Hout and his wife spent hours online looking for ideas for interesting golf holes, other attractions and companies that specialized in mini golf courses. They found an Illinois company called Entertainment Concepts that offered the couple “a multitude of holes to pick from.” They chose the kind they liked and the company designed a course around those holes. Hout’s desire was to include some challenging water holes, but he found that his other desire for a wheelchairand walker-accessible course prohibit-

ed it. “It’s easier to have the accessibility without water,” he said. “We hope to add on in the future, but this is what we’re going to start with.” You won’t find any windmills or clown faces at K & A Mini Golf – named for the Houts’ sons Keith, age 12, and Austin, 10 – another decision based on the desire for handicap accessibility. But Hout says if the demand is there in the future, they could redesign holes with those “putt-putt golf” features while still maintaining its handicap accessibility. The course’s 18 holes will be created out of concrete and covered in four different kinds of carpet that simulate the challenges of a real course. “There will be greens and roughs,” Hout said. “There will be water carpet painted blue. There’s a sand carpet. There are obstacles. ... We have tiered holes, so it’s not just flat.”

MAY 30, 2019

We can suffer a little for those who suffered a lot We here in East Central Minnesota have been pretty lucky when it comes to weather on Memorial Day. While the rest of the weekend maybe hasn’t been perfect, Memorial Day itself has historically been relatively good. Sure, the weather might not have been ideal (just think back to last year’s stifling heat), but in looking back, I only found two times in the past 30 years where the weather even came close to the steady rain that fell all day on Monday. Given that, I can’t totally be blamed for first not believing the forecast when they originally mentioned the possibility of precipitation. I also can’t be blamed for letting out Worth a a loud groan of displeasure when the Thousand forecast stated the strong likelihood of over an inch of rain falling, along with Words wishing out loud multiple times that Bill Sunday’s gorgeous weather could just stick around for another day. Stickels III “It can pour starting at 2 p.m.,” I tried bargaining with Mother Nature. Obviously, that didn’t work either. So I grudgingly gathered my rain gear, complete with umbrella and “storm jacket” for my camera and made my way out to Main Street in Cambridge – my first of two ceremonies. While there, though, my attitude started to change. Sure, it was a challenge trying to juggle holding an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other. But it also forced me to be more focused on the task at hand – pre-zooming my lens in and out before getting into position to take the photo. I was also able to duck under an awning while waiting for the next photo opportunity to present itself. So all-in-all it wasn’t so bad. In fact, I started to almost enjoy it, at least when thinking about how this will at least provide different photos from what seemed to be the “same-old” ones year after year. That enthusiasm did wane, however, when I discovered that Isanti’s ceremony, which I assumed would get moved indoors as advertised “in case of inclement weather,” was in fact still being held outside as well, and at a cemetery that offered fewer opportunities to seek shelter, no less. While huddled under the only shelter available at Union Cemetery (tree branches), I overheard other people talking about being outside. They mentioned how the commander was “old school” and insisted on holding the ceremony at the cemetery since “the people we are honoring are buried here, and they went through a lot worse than a little rain.” That comment hit me like a ton of bricks. Sure, I’ve heard that sentiment before when seeing photos of soldiers braving the weather at other ceremonies, but I personally had never had to go through it. It also made me think about the hypocrisy of my complaints as I have spent countless hours enduring horrible weather conditions while covering something comparatively meaningless as a sporting event. So, in the future, while I can still hope for ideal weather conditions on Memorial Day, hopefully I will remember this before I start complaining too much if it doesn’t come to pass. After all, what’s getting a little wet compared to paying the ultimate price for your country? Bill Stickels III is editor of the Isanti-Chisago County Star. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thanks for making Track & Field Day a success To the editor, On Wednesday, May 15, Braham Elementary School’s grades 1-4 participated in their annual Track & Field Day. It was a perfect day for everyone’s Bomber Pride to shine. The students took part in many different events that involved running, jumping, throwing and pulling. Some were relay events, and others were individual. To make this day possible for our students, it takes a lot of hard work and cooperation by the elementary staff and volunteers. I would like to thank the Braham Parents’ Organization for donating the snack, and a local insurance company for donating the freeze pops. Also thanks to the families who came to cheer and support our Junior Bombers in their efforts. Lastly, a big thank you to the Braham High School student athletes for taking the time to come and work with the elementary students on their big day. Everyone’s help was greatly appreciated. Cambridge Christian School honors two long-time teachers CONTRIBUTED CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Cambridge Christian School honored two teachers at a school assembly on Wednesday, May 22. Gail Lind, a kindergarten teacher, has taught at Cambridge Christian School for 19 years. She is retiring after this school year. Jeff Bonkoski, a secondary Bible teacher, athletic director, basketball coach and technology director, has taught and worked at Cambridge Christian School for 24 years. He is moving into a ministry coordinator position at Lakeside Christian Church after this school year. CCS students, faculty, board members and alumni spent time honoring both teachers by sharing favorite and funny stories and by telling them how much their work has changed lives. Students thanked Mrs. Lind for teaching them how to read and told her they would miss her, while an alumna who is becoming a teacher shared how much she had learned from how Gail taught her. Coworkers shared about how Gail delights in her students, seeing them as unique and special creations and working to help each of them learn individualistically. High school students shared with Mr. Bonkoski about how his challenging classes had trained them for college level courses, and alumni shared how his

mentoring during school and on retreats with the students had changed and shaped their lives and thanked him for his wisdom and integrity. Coworkers shared about how Jeff’s fingerprints were on every part of the school, how he had worked so tirelessly and selflessly to serve the school, and how much they loved working with him. Board members thanked them both and spoke of the impact both of them had had on their own

children and presented them with gifts to honor their years of service. The unique relationships that teachers and students are able to share in the smaller atmosphere of CCS was evident from all of the anecdotes and testimonies that so many shared on Wednesday. Gail and Jeff have shaped and mentored so many lives, and their time at CCS will continue to bear fruit in the lives of so many of their students over time.

MINI GOLF: Developer aiming for July 1 opening, then open through October prior Navy experience might come in handy. “If we see there are issues with people,” Hout said, “I have no problem throwing them out.”

FROM PAGE I

He explained how most concrete companies don’t want to take on the challenge of grading the holes, so it was difficult to find one that would. “The tolerances are so tight – they have to be dead on,” Hout said about the concrete work. “You have to have the swales and the dips and things like that to make the holes work, to make it challenging.” MORE THAN GOLF The project calls for the remodel of an existing building on the lot into the course clubhouse that will handle check-in and offer a concession stand with an outward-facing service window. “We’re not going to compete with local restaurants,” Hout said. “We’ll have hot dogs, nachos, pizza, a couple ice cream snacks.” The concessions are for players or those utilizing the party room on the east side of the building. Packages will be available that include rounds of golf and snacks for 10 people and time on the sand volleyball court if desired. Families can also bring in their own party food, according to Hout. In addition to the volleyball court, there’s space outside for “Water Wars” – two boxes people stand in and slingshot water balloons back and forth at each other, with a blast of water at the end.

CONTRIBUTED

A site plan for the proposed miniature golf course and entertainment center shows 18 holes, sand volleyball court, water feature, dining patio and a portion of the clubhouse building featuring an arcade and concessions.

An arcade in the building will offer six to eight games – throwback games if Hout can find them. “My kids tear me apart in their video games,” he said, “so we want to go back and get some Centipede or Galaga or something. Then I can have a chance.” Hout is open to adding features as funds permit. He’d consider batting cages, remote control cars or a splash pad. He’d love to branch out into a water park with a lazy river and water slides. What if he had a million dollars for the project? Hout covers his mouth and laughs. “I’d love to put a Ferris wheel

in,” he said. “I think it’d be so cool at night just to light up the sky ... giving it a carnival atmosphere.” A FAMILY BUSINESS Work has already started on remodeling the clubhouse and putting in infrastructure. Hout hopes to be open for business by July 1. The course will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily May through October, with all that subject to change as he sees how the public responds. “If there’s a line at the door at 10 in the morning, we’ll adjust our hours,” he said. “If we get people that are coming at quarter to 10 at night, we’ll stay open to 10:30, 11:00 then.

QUEENER: Superintendent’s term ends Aug. 23 when he takes consultant position FROM PAGE I

That’s the reason why we are able to do what we do. We have amazing people in the organization. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the finest administrators I have ever met.” Queener went on to list a litany of successes within the school district that have been accomplished in his tenure, while not taking sole credit for them. “I am very proud of the work we – and I say we because this is a team effort – have accomplished in six years,” he said. Queener then credited the district as a whole. “This community is extraordinary,” he said. “I think the support the community has for the school district is secondto-none. I think all of that is an important aspect, but it wouldn’t be without the board and your support and willingness to take a risk and being innovative and supporting not only myself, but the team for the work they’ve done. I am very appreciative of your commitments and your wise consultation. It’s been an honor and a privilege to work with you.” Queener will be leaving at a somewhat tumultuous time for the district. In the last year, the district has made a pair of controversial (according to some) decisions in breaking away from the Rum River Special Edu-

‘This community is extraordinary. I think the support the community has for the school district is second to none .’ Dr. Ray Queener Outgoing Superintendent of Schools cation Cooperative and then exercising their lease levy authority to begin construction on a new, $12 million building to house three special education programs. The public scrutiny of those decisions was also recently amplified when the district was forced to perform a $4.9 million budget reduction for the upcoming school year. While not directly mentioning those controversies, Queener refuted the notion he was leaving because of them. “This is a logical next step for me,” he said. “I’ve been a teacher, a coach. I’ve worked in the technology arena, supporting technology at both the school and district level. I had an opportunity to move into district administration 18 years ago and supported principals and directors, and then six years ago coming here. Being able

to continue to coach and to work with school districts, school boards and individuals is, I think, a great opportunity.” SCHOOL BOARD’S REACTION In accepting his resignation, board chair Tim Hitchings thanked Queener for his work with the district. “With a heavy heart, we receive your resignation,” Hitchings said. “Thank you for all you have done for us as a board, for the students of our district and our staff and our community. We will miss your leadership, knowledge and wisdom you have so freely shared with us for these years. We respect your decision to leave, but know that you will be deeply missed, and we wish you all the best. Thank you for your service to our district. We have been made better because of you.” WHAT HAPPENS NEXT Queener’s resignation will become official on Aug. 23, which is less than two weeks before the start of the 20192020 school year. Until then, he indicated he will “dedicate and commit myself to making as smooth a transition as possible.” That transition will have to take place in relatively short order. To that extent, the board scheduled a study session to go over the hiring process on June 6 at 5:30 p.m.

One thing he’ll never hire is a bartender. “This is for families,” Hout said. “I don’t want someone to wreck it for someone else because alcohol is involved. ... This is going to be a clean, safe environment.” He plans to install security cameras throughout the property for the safety of patrons and his own liability. He’s also willing to hire a security guard if needed, but said his

A PLACE FOR EVERYONE Although security is a necessary evil, the goal is to provide a safe, drug-free, fun environment for families to thrive in. “That’s one thing we want to do is overall fun,” he said, “just smiles, smiles, smiles. Anybody – no matter how bad their day is, no matter what’s going on – can came over and have a good time and forget about it for an hour.” Helping people forget their difficulties is one of the reasons Hout is adamant about accessibility. He said inspiration for the project came from the wheelchair-bound son of a man who coached his sons in baseball. When it came to baseball, the boy couldn’t compete with the other kids. “But something like this – even if he couldn’t quite swing the club, at least he can be there and be included,” Hout said. “Maybe somebody can help him swing that club, include him. ... I don’t want anyone feeling like they don’t belong here.” Watch for a future Facebook page under “K & A Mini Golf.” Until then, questions can be directed by email to kaminigolf@ outlook.com.

State passes Cambridge sales tax increase BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

The roller-coaster ride endured by supporters of a new library for the city of Cambridge is finally about to come to an end. During the state of Minnesota legislature’s special session held on Friday, May 24, the omnibus bill that included Cambridge’s .5% sales tax increase was passed by both the House and the Senate and was signed by governor Tim Walz. The bill was passed despite opposition to tax increases by some members of the legislature, including Representative Brian Johnson, who serves District 32A, which includes Cambridge. That opposition and the extension of the legislature into a special session was the latest of the obstacles supporters of the library faced, which also included one failed public referendum vote in 2016 before it was passed by 61.63% of the voters during the 2018 election. Besides Johnson’s opposition, which included briefly trying to have the increase removed from the House’s omnibus bill, Senator Mark Koran also indicated his apprehensions over it before

ultimately introducing it into the Senate’s version of the omnibus tax bill. The bill passed by the legislature included all three projects that were earmarked for funding from the sales tax increase, for a total of $22 million. Of that, $8 million will go towards the new library, which will be housed in the old GracePointe Crossings’ Gables East building. Just over $11.5 million will go to a variety of street improvement projects throughout the city, with the remaining $2.275 million going to parks improvements. The final steps in the process will take place during the June 3 and June 17 city council meetings. During the June 3 meeting, the council will decide the specific projects to be funded by the sales tax increase. On June 17, the council will simply have to adopt an ordinance declaring the sales tax increase. Once everything is approved, the increase will begin on Aug. 1, 2019, and run until Dec. 31, 2043, or whenever the city collects the full $22 million, whichever comes first.

Isanti County Farm Family of the Year named BY JENNIFER KOTILA NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

After nearly going out of the farming business during the “tough 1980s that most of us remember and lived through,” Wayne and Lois Boettcher diversified their dairy farm to accommodate boarding horses and beef cattle. This year, the Boettchers are Isanti County’s Farm Family of the Year, and were recognized at the Isanti County Board meeting May 15. Isanti County Master Gardener Rod Greder introduced the Boettchers and presented the award, noting that recipients of the Farm Family of the Year award must be actively farming and trying to make a living doing it on a family-oriented farm, with members of the family also involved in the community. The farm owned by the Boettchers was originally purchased in 1939. Wayne bought the farm from his father in 1970, milking about 50 head of dairy cows and raising 50 head of livestock. Some of his herd were registered Holsteins. In the 1980s, the farm expanded to about 100 head of registered Holsteins plus young stock, and about 800 acres of crop were farmed. It was the mid-1990s when Wayne and his first wife decided to quit farming, selling all their machinery and renting out their land. “The farm was put up for sale, but it didn’t sell,” Greder said. A horse boarding facility was started on the open dairy farm, and today Wayne and his current wife, Lois,

board about 50 horses and raise 20 beef cows. Their sons, daughters and grandchildren are involved in the farm operation, helping to put up hay and working the cattle. The crop land owned by the Boettchers’ is rented out. The farm offers its services to board and stock animals for the Western Heritage Livestock show, which is associated with 4-H. The farm name is BMW Stables – as in Boettcher, Mattson (Lois’ maiden name) and Wilking (Lois’ daughter’s last name). A host of family members are involved in the operation of the farm including Wayne’s son Shane Boettcher, his wife Stacey, and their children Brook and Wyatt; Lois’ son Chuck Mattson, his wife Heidi, and their children Riley and Cyrus; and Lois’ daughter Jaimi, her husband Jason, and their children Clay, Reese and Cullen. “All children and grandchildren are active on the farm,” Greder said, “and at the fair they show beef, dairy, horse, pig, goats and rabbits.” ACTIVE OFF THE FARM A very important part of being selected Farm Family of the Year is the family’s involvement in the community. “I think Wayne and Lois have the community involvement done in spades,” Greder said. “They are very active, very deserving of this award.” Growing up, Wayne was president of Cambridge FFA and the local 4-H club. He is currently president of Isanti County Fair Board. Jaimi is the leader of 4-H beef project, and Stacy is the lead-

Both have also been active in the MN Holstein Association, MN Pork Producers, MN Cattleman’s Association, and many other agriculture related organizations.

The family shows at the East Central Holstein Show, Northeast Livestock Show, Denver Livestock Show, Iowa State Fair and the Isanti County Fair. The family will be recognized at the 2019 Isanti County Fair in July, and will receive statewide recognition at FarmFest near Redwood Falls in August.

BLUEJACKET SOUNDBITES BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD Cambridge-Isanti had a very successful meet in the final incarnation of the Mississippi 8 conference track championships. The boys team captured the conference championship, earning 200 points, compared to STMA’s 155. In winning the team championship, the Jackets had 22 All-Conference placings in the 18 total events. All-Conference honors are awarded to the first through fourth-place finishers. Honorable Mention is awarded to fifth through eighth place. The Jacket boys also captured seven honorable mentions. Among those, Dylan Larson (400), Ethan Hintermeister (pole vault) and Blaze Krueger (shot put, discus) took home first place. The 4x100 relay team also took home first place. For the girls, the team results were flipped from the boys, with STMA taking home the championship and C-I finishing a still-satisfying runner-up. Individually, the girls had 12 All-Conference finishes and seven honorable mentions. AnnaGrace Nelson was a double-winner, taking first in the high jump and 100 hur-

dles. Kaylee Clement claimed first in the 100 dash, and Char Morke took top honors in the pole vault. The 4x200 relay team also took first place. BOYS TENNIS After getting eliminated from the team tournament by Anoka, the Jackets set their sights on the individual tournament. There, the team had one individual and one doubles team advance to at least the quarterfinals. Jacob Zacharias, who was given the #2 seed, advanced to the semifinals before falling to the eventual section champion. He then lost a close third-place match, with both sets going to a tiebreaker, to finish in fourth. The doubles team of Wyatt Jones and Rigo Mork were given the #8 seed, where they advanced to the quarterfinals before being defeated, also by the eventual section champions. SOFTBALL The Jackets saw their season come to an end in the second round of the Section 7AAAA double-elimination tournament. Emma Downing and Matt Yerke placed third during the recent Section 7A meet to qualify for state. As a team, the boys finished third and the girls finished fourth at sections. BASEBALL The Bombers finished

their regular season with a 4-3, 13-inning marathon loss to Pine City on Monday, May 20. For the Section 5A playoffs, Braham has gotten off to a 2-0 start, beating McGregor 11-1 and Oglivie 6-5. They played Hinckley-Finlayson on Wednesday, after this edition of the Star went to press. SOFTBALL The Bombers had their season come to an end at the hands of Hinckley-Finlayson, losing to the Jaguars 16-5.

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD The Vikings boys team placed eighth out of 10 teams during the Mississippi 8 conference championships held in Princeton, with the girls team coming in 10th. Individually, Paige Bauer was the only Viking to claim All-Conference honors, coming in second in the pole vault and fourth in the high jump. Four other girls received Honorable Mention honors. excellent start in the Section 7AAA tournament with a 10-0, six-inning win over Duluth Denfeld, the defending section champions were shockingly eliminated from the tournament with two-straight losses. The nightmare conclusion happened at Cloquet on Saturday, May 25. In the championship round of the tournament, the #1 seed Cloquet topped North Branch 11-2. The game was close at the start, but the Lumberjacks pulled away late in the game, sending the Vikings into the

elimination round. There, they faced Grand Rapids, who the Vikings had defeated 5-3 earlier in the season. This time around, however, it took two Viking runs in the fifth inning to prevent the game ending early as the Thunderhawks jumped all over North Branch to build up an 11-0 lead. Those two runs in the fifth were the only ones NB could muster, as they again lost by a score of 11-2. BASEBALL After receiving the #7 seed in the Section 7AAA tournament,

the Vikings put a good scare into the #2 seed and arch-rival Chisago Lakes squad, falling to the Wildcats 7-6. The loss sends North Branch to the elimination bracket, where they will face Princeton at Princeton on Thursday, May 30.

BOYS AND GIRLS GOLF The Vikings golf teams placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the Mississippi 8 conference meet last week. Neither team had an individual All-Conference or Honorable Mention finisher.

Former senator to Cambridge-Isanti student earns ‘Scholar speak on history of of Distinction’ award for theater arts Republican Party CONTRIBUTED CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI SCHOOLS

Kate Larson, a junior at Cambridge-Isanti High School, has earned the title of a MN Scholar of Distinction in Theater Arts, an award given by the MN Department of Education. The Minnesota Scholars of Distinction Award Program recognizes distinguished achievement by highly motivated self-directed students in: Leadership, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Theater Arts. To earn this recognition, students must complete required work in the Minnesota Academic Standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter and apply their knowledge to challenging projects. Kate was nominated by her theatre director and speech coach, Kelly Fairchild-Fahrni, then she submitted an “Intent to Apply” last December. There are several areas in which a student can apply to be a “Scholar” for Theatre Arts. There is: Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Design and Technical Theatre, and Comprehensive (which is two of the other theatre arts).

CONTRIBUTED COMMON GROUND UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Scout & Morgan Books and Common Ground United Methodist Church of Cambridge welcome former Senator Dave Durenberger to an Adult Forum to talk about the recent book, “When Republicans Were Progressive” from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at the church at 404 Cypress Street N, Cambridge. The book is “a history of a remarkable political party that saw government as a practical tool for creating conditions in which individuals can thrive and why its practices are needed today. Issues that are anathema to today’s GOP—environmental protection, assistance for vulnerable citizens, and economic opportunity for low-wage workers and the middle class – were at the heart of the party’s agenda. Minnesota Republicans held that working across the aisle was a mark of strength, not of weakness or disloyalty.” Durenberger is a retired three-term Republican U.S. senator and the retired chair of the National Institute of Health Policy. Books are in-stock at Scout & Morgan Books and will be available for purchase and signing at the event. The event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call the bookstore at 763-689-2474.

After the Intent to Apply was submitted, Kate needed to put together a portfolio. Since Kate selected Comprehensive in Acting and Design and Technical (Costuming) her portfolio needed to include both of those areas. It consisted of: - Head Shot - Artist Statement - An Annotated Resume - Work Samples and support materials, - A Review of a live performance of a full-length play - A script analysis - Letters of recommendation - A statement of academic qualification. After that was submitted, Kate waited to see if she would be invited to participate in the next step, the Artistic Showcase presentation, which she was. The presentation had three parts: - Performing or presenting of materials in your chosen area(s) of recognition - Submission of further research and support materials and - An interview with the evaluator panel. Since Kate was entering in Comprehensive, she needed to fulfill the requirement for both categories. Her presentation was April 29.

Ask A Trooper: Why the continued ‘click it or ticket’ push? Question: I have heard a lot about “click it or ticket” recently. I thought seat belt use was at an all-time high? Answer: Most Minnesotans are making the life-saving decision to buckle up. According to the 2018 Minnesota Seat Belt Survey, 92.4 percent of front seat occupants are wearing their seat belts. Unfortunately, that means more than 7 percent of motorists continue to risk their lives and the lives of those in the vehicle Ask a by failing to buckle up. Trooper Riding without a seat belt is gambling Sgt. Neil with your life. PrelimDickenson inary numbers show 92 unbelted motorists lost their lives on Minnesota roads in 2018. This is the reason why education and enforcement are necessary: to save lives. We’d rather meet you on the shoulder of the road now than at a violent crash scene down the road. More than 300 law enforcement agencies across the state are participating in the statewide Click It or Ticket campaign May 20-June 2. The Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety coordinates the extra enforcement and education campaign. Law enforcement working overtime patrols will be on the lookout for unbelted motorists. All passengers must be properly restrained – even those in the back seat. All children must also be buckled in the proper child seat. A seat belt is your best defense in

case of a crash – every time you get into a vehicle, be the voice of reason and speak up – remind everyone to buckle up. Minnesota Child Seat Law and Steps: • In Minnesota, all children must be in a child restraint until they are 4’ 9” tall, or at least age 8, whichever comes first. • Rear-facing child seats - Newborns to at least 1 year and 20 pounds; recommended up to age 2. It is safest to keep a child rear-facing as long as possible. • Forward-facing seats - Age 2 until around age 4. It’s preferable to keep children in a harnessed restraint until they reach the maximum weight limit. • Booster seats - Use after outgrowing a forward-facing harnessed restraint; safest to remain in a booster until 4’ 9” tall, or at least age 8, whichever comes first. • Seat belts - Use when children can sit with their back against the vehicle seat and have their knees bent comfortably over the edge with their feet touching the floor. Belts should be worn snug across the hips or thighs and should never be tucked under the arm or behind the back. Sgt. Neil Dickenson is Minnesota State Patrol Public Information Officer for the state’s northeast region. Send questions concerning traffic-related laws or issues to neil.dickenson@ state.mn or by mail to Minnesota State Patrol, 1131 Mesaba Ave., Duluth MN 55811. Follow Dickenson on Twitter at @MSPPIO_NE.
