Uber murder prompts ride-share caution BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

As frequent concert-goers and bar-hoppers go, Caitlin Netzer reluctantly admits she is a bit unusual. “I’m always looking around areas, and I make up escape plans in my head,” the 2010 North Branch graduate said. “One of my biggest fears has always been being stabbed or shot.” That idiosyncrasy, coupled with fresh memories of the 21-year-old South Carolina student who was brutally murdered after getting into the wrong car following a night of drinking, might very well have saved Netzer and a friend from a

dangerous, if not life-threatening, situation. It all happened following the Katy Perry concert held as part of the Final Four events in downtown Minneapolis on Sunday, April 7. Netzer and her close friend Sam, who is from Willmar, decided to grab a few drinks at a small bar. When it came time to leave, it turned out the bar was difficult for Uber drivers to find, and their attempts to reserve a ride were canceled multiple times. As the two young women were waiting for what turned out to be the third canceled ride, Netzer said a guy in an “extremely black and dark, dark car” pulled up and asked the two if they were looking for an

Uber ride. “So naturally, we say ‘Yes,’” Netzer said. “But in the meantime, I’m looking at my app knowing something was up. He goes, ‘I’m your Uber,’ and I said ‘No, you’re not. Show me your phone, show me proof.’” Netzer said the man kept pointing at something they couldn’t see in an attempt to convince them he was who he said he was. “He wouldn’t show me his phone,” Netzer continued. “I still had the app up. It’s not the car, not the guy. There was no other car around, and the app was saying my Uber has been CONTRIBUTED

APRIL 11, 2019

Sometimes, I’m embarrassed to be a sports fan I’ve said this many times in this column, but I really am an “unabashed sports fan” (it even says so on my Facebook page). This past week, though, several social media posts have made me completely embarrassed by other people who also claim to be “sports fans.” The first was a reaction to an announcement by the University of Oregon women’s basketball player Sabrina Ionescu. Over the weekend, she wrote a letter to Ducks fans proclaiming she is coming back for her senior season, rather than making the jump to the WNBA. “WNBA – I’ll see you soon...Just have some business to take care of Worth a first,” is what she concluded a very Thousand well-written letter with. Words And social media started going crazy – not with congrats or accoBill lades for her dedication to her team, although I’m sure there was a ton of Stickels III that too – but what I saw was a bunch of Neanderthal-like comments inferring the unfinished business had to do with cooking or cleaning. While those sort of comments are disheartening, the next example is downright sickening. Last week, during an NCAA Regional, Auburn women’s gymnast Samantha Cerio severely dislocated both her knees at the same time during a floor exercise tumbling pass. Naturally, like most videos of this nature, the image went viral. And just like the first example, a majority of the comments were very sympathetic to her plight. But then there were others. The number of stupid GIFs was pathetic. Even the Twin Cities’ own KFAN radio was instigating these pathetic comments by posting the video THREE times on Facebook, plus adding a video of peoples’ reaction while watching it. Then, to cap off their childish behavior, they posted a video of a male gymnast breaking his leg on vault with the caption of “‘Tina Rage’ just one-upped us with this gruesome injury from the vault,” as if it was some sort of contest. We are talking about one of the most severe-looking injuries ever witnessed, (think Joe Theismann’s injury in “stereo”) and people are cracking jokes about it! Now, I’m guessing by now some of you have figured out a common theme with these two examples. They are both involving female athletes. And it’s no secret that many “sports fans” don’t take women’s sports seriously. That is what is truly the embarrassing part. But to me, women’s sports are often-times more admirable. Sure, Ionescu might very well have a lucrative future in the WNBA, but most female athletes don’t have a professional future in their sport. Unlike the elite male athletes, females choose to not only compete, but they have to balance that with finding another career path – which many of them also do at an elite level. Just look at Cerio. Not only was she an extremely talented gymnast, but she literally is a rocket scientist. And while some might still be able to have a recovery goal of playing their sport professionally, her main goal is to be able to walk down the aisle at her own wedding ... in two months! Now that is something to be a fan of. Bill Stickels III is editor of the Isanti-Chisago County Star. He can be reached at 763-689-1181 ext. 107 or editor@ countystar.com. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An invitation to host a student from Spain for three weeks To the editor, My family moved to the Chisago area 21 years ago, and we have had kids attending Chisago schools consecutively for the past 19 years (only nine more years to go!). In all of that time, I have never known of a group of international students coming to our area for a short-term stay. When I was in high school, my family hosted a student from Germany for four weeks, and it was an amazing educational opportunity. There were a dozen or so students who had all come together and were hosted by families who I knew and went to school with. We went on some excursions, had each other over for parties, played sports together and built long-lasting relationships with our new German friends. As my own kids have gone through and graduated from Chisago Lakes schools, I wondered why that kind of thing doesn’t happen anymore? This winter, I heard that Compass USA was bringing a group of 15 students from Spain this summer for a short, three-week stay in Minnesota, and they were looking for someone to coordinate a program to host the students in his/her area. It could have been anywhere, but I wanted to bring it here so that our kids and our families could have the experience that I had when I was in high school. These students are coming from June 30-July 20 and need host families to stay with. I would love to invite anyone who is interested in this opportunity to join us and make a new friend from Spain like Jesus, a 16-year-old competitive swimmer, or brothers Eduardo and Ricardo who love to play video games, watch movies and play sports like soccer, basketball and water polo. We also have Lucia who is in ballet, Isabel who does gymnastics, and Celia who wants to go into the medical field. Victoria, an elementary school teacher in Madrid, will be traveling with the group as their adult escort. Although our group will do a few excursions together, like attend a Twins baseball game, visit the Mall of America, and canoe down the St. Croix river, the majority of time will be spent with host families – playing games, going camping, watch-

ing movies, sharing our cultures, and becoming another member of the family. The only expense to the host family is the cost of providing three meals a day. Compass USA offers a $50 per week stipend as a “thank you” and to offset some of the cost of hosting. Join us! Daycare fraud should be convicted To the editor, Rick Olseen, there are several reports about daycare fraud; however, you have this case closed. Minnesota Somali daycare fraud update from Dec. 17, 2018, at 12:36 – read it in its entirety. Tell me what Jeff Sessions claims. They are still confused in what has transpired. Also this fraud may not be isolated to just Minnesota. The case is still pending unless you look at the political correctness report. Somalian fraud is very protected. Then you go on to rip Mr. Stillman’s credibility. True, not impeccable, however, if it wasn’t for him the investigations may not of happened. Who was in charge of the DHS? Inspector general Carolyn Ham. Talk about credibility, look at Omar. Every time she is confronted she deletes all credible evidence against her and cries, “Islamophobia.” Please refer to “Judge Jeanine Pirro Youtube rips Omar.” Direct yourself to YouTube, this will give you a understanding of my editorial that concerns me very much: Glenn Beck video from Dave Horowitz Freedom Center, “Is Ilan Omar a Terrorist?” Then determine your own perspective. Omar’s remarks about Jews and Israelis are right in line with the Islamic laws. Sharia law? Please help me understand what the “Phases of Laws” state about Jews, Israelis. Fraud was committed by a few Somalians, not all of them. I feel no different about Carolyn Ham. She should also get major prison time if convicted SEE LETTERS, PAGE 5

Distracted driving can be prevented Distracted and inattentive driving was a contributing factor in 1 out of 5 crashes since 2013. Crashes that resulted in an annual average of 53 deaths and 216 seriously injured persons. The scarier fact is the Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety estimates these numbers are underreported due to the challenges faced in determining distraction as the cause of a crash. The Cambridge Police and law enforceCambridge Department ment agencies across the City Views state are conducting extra distracted driving enforceTodd ment during April as part of the Toward Zero Deaths ProSchuster gram. During the 2018 extra enforcement campaign, 1,575 people were cited for texting and driving. This number was up from 1,017 in 2017 and 972 in 2016. Citations for violating MN Statute 169.475 can cost $50 plus applicable court fees. However, second and subsequent offenses cost $275 plus court fees. A fine is a warning to correct the behavior – it could cost a life next time. Texting while driving is not the only cause for a citation. The statute states it is illegal for drivers to read/compose/send text message or emails and access the internet using a wireless device while the vehicle is in motion or a part of traffic. This includes being stopped in traffic or at a traffic light. Cell phones are not the only distraction drivers face. One of the simplest things to do is prepare yourself prior to departure, but

here are a few more tips to keep you and your passengers safe: • Cell Phones – Turn cell phones off or place them out of reach to avoid the urge to use. If a passenger is present, ask them to handle calls and texts. • Music and other controls – Pre-program your favorite radio stations for easy access or arrange your music on your phone or mp3 player before driving. Adjust your mirrors and heating/AC system before driving or ask a passenger to assist. • Navigation – Designate a passenger to serve as “co-pilot” to help with directions. If you are alone, map out your destination in advance. If you need to enter an address into a mapping app, pull off of the road to do so. • Eating and drinking – Try to avoid eating messy foods and make sure that any food and beverages are secure from spilling. • Children – Teach children the importance of good behavior in the vehicle; do not underestimate how distracting it can be to tend to children while driving. • Passengers – Speak up to stop your driver from distracting behavior. Ask to assist them with the task they are trying to do. One “LOL” or “SMH” could change your life forever. You could end up in jail, injured or dead. If you’re texting, you’re not driving. Take a moment and describe your loved one out loud. Think about their loves, passions and accomplishments. Now think about saying those things at your loved one’s funeral. That is what can happen when a driver decides to take their eyes off the road. Please help us make the roads a safer place! Todd Schuster is Cambridge chief of police. He can be reached at 763-552-3243.

I am fed up with fraud in this country – welfare, disability and now daycare. I am very disappointed that anyone would rip off the taxpayers after we provided all listed above to make a better life for them regardless of race. Lastly, I have to assume you are in line with Bernie Sanders, whereas rapist and murder felons will be able to vote from prison too? I am glad everyone does not want a blue house, and we can express how we feel. You did not care for my opinion? Fine, I did not care much for yours. Jerry Grell Cambridge

of daycare fraud. Allison, I respect your views; however, I find it very disturbing you mention nothing about the fraud that was committed. Here is my point, you decide to take a refugee into your home, pay for everything, shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, college, etc. Then discover after all you provided this person in good faith they find your PIN number for your bank accounts and takes $50,000 out of your account and steals your jewelry. How would you feel?

Even though we’re well into the Church Season of Lent, many don’t know what “Lent” is all about. Lent is a season that helps us prepare for the joy of Easter. Lent is a time for refection, penitence and renewal of faith. In fact, the word “Lent” comes from an Focus old Anglo-Saxon Faith on word – lencten – meaning Pastor “spring.” And just as springMueller time is a season for renewal and growth, so also Lent is a time for renewed discipleship and re-commitment to our growth as Christians. But Lent is also a time when we look at our beginnings. It’s a time when we come to grips with our roots – that we were born, even conceived, in sin as Psalm 51:5 coldly reminds us: “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” (ESV). So Lent is a season that directs us to look at ourselves. And when we do, it’s not a pretty sight. But fortunately, we have another place and person to look to for comfort. That is why we’re encouraged to “fix our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2). And when we do, it’s always with the cross in mind. But what a strange thing, you may think, for us to put our hope in. An instrument of torture – a method of execution – must become the very hope to which Christians cling. A man discovers a priceless masterpiece hidden behind a

painting he paid 10 dollars for at an estate sale. A woman looks at her great-grandfather’s violin and wipes the dust off a name that reveals its maker: Antonio Stradivari. A boy opens a box of old toys his father is about to throw out and sees a baseball card. With wide eyes he reads, “Mickey Mantle - Rookie”. The best treasures are often where you least expect them. God, too, puts treasure where you least expect it. He hides His treasure in the plainest and most ordinary of places. Like words and water. Like bread and wine. Like a corpse on a cross. And so, when we ponder the cross, we Christians don’t see an “off-center plus sign.” We don’t just see “two pieces of wood.” No, we survey the man on the wood. The wood simply gives the man context. It helps define who He is and what He did. Therefore, the best barometer for the Christian isn’t to become a “lesser sinner” (even if that were possible). Rather, the mature Christian becomes ever more aware of the insurmountable gap between God and man. We can never underestimate the depravity of man nor overestimate the grace of God. Jesus Christ willingly spanned the chasm of sin by stretching His nailed hands from the riches of heaven to the sinfulness of man. “Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a tribute far too small; love so amazing, so divine – demands my soul, my life, my all!” (stanza 4, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”). Amen. Reverend Mueller is pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 636 Old N. Main Street, Cambridge. He can be reached at 763-689-1685.

Women’s scholarship organization celebrates 150 years CONTRIBUTED PHILANTHROPIC EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATION

On Jan. 21, 2019, the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) celebrated the 150th birthday of the International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Chapter FL of Rush City, North Branch, Harris, Forest Lake, Andover, Cambridge, Stanchfield, Mora, Milaca and Dalbo joined the other 230,000 current members of P.E.O. from nearly 6,000 chapters across the United States and Canada in celebrating the historic milestone. Chapter FL has 45 members. Since its inception in 1869, the nonprofit organization has helped more than 105,000 women pursue educational goals by providing more than $321 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans and the stewardship of Cottey College. Through membership, the P.E.O. Sisterhood has brought together nearly a half a million women in the United States and Canada who are passionate about helping women advance through education, while supporting and motivating them. In addition to the educational philanthropies, the P.E.O. Sisterhood provides a framework of support and community for all members. What started with a bond of friendship among seven women in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is now one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America. “Receiving the Program for Continuing Education award from P.E.O. allowed me to worry less about the financial aspect of graduate school and instead focus on being a good student, mom, wife and employee,” said Kristi Warner, of Chisago City. “I am extremely grateful for the grant I received as it has already opened the door to new career growth opportunities.” “The P.E.O. members of Chapter FL stand on the shoulders of the generations of P.E.O. sisters who came before us,” said Marilyn Schoolmeesters, from Harris, and president of Chapter FL. “They were dedicated to the mission of women supporting women, just as we are today. And it is a cause that will continue to be relevant for the next 150 years.” Chapter FL has been a part of the communities

listed above since it was organized in 2002. As well as monthly business/program meetings, some of its yearly events include an annual spring flower sale, garage sale (this year on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at the Chisago County Fairgrounds, Lions Club building, in Rush City) and other fundraising activities with proceeds going directly to support women’s education. To learn more about P.E.O., its powerful educational philanthropies and see stories of women who have benefited from the programs, visit peointernational.org or contact Marilyn Schoolmeesters at jmschools@q.com. Members of the Bluejacket Robotics team took part in regional competition on March 27-30 at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota, bringing an end to their season.

Bluejacket Robotics end season at second regional competition CONTRIBUTED BLUEJACKET ROBOTICS

The team competed at the FIRST Robotics 10,000 Lakes Regional competition in Williams Arena at University of Minnesota on March 27-30. They ranked 11 out of 63 teams at the end of the qualification matches. The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals due to a crushed drive train. “With gracious professionalism, they handed over their spot to the next team in line,” said DeNell Beaupre, Bluejacket Robotics Booster Club communications director, “and cheered for all of the teams still competing.” The team will finish their season by bagging groceries as a fundraiser on Saturday,

April 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cub Foods in Cambridge. “One of our goals – to keep this an affordable activity for the kids – is done through the generous help of our sponsors,” Beaupre said. “All of your donations are tax deductible, as our booster club is a 501(c)(3) organization. Thank you, sponsors!” The Bluejacket Robotics FRC team had a great turnout for their Annual Craft Show and Community Expo Saturday, March 23, Beaupre said. They would like to thank all of the vendors and attendees for showing their support for the team. For more information about the program, sponsorships or how to donate, contact the Booster Club at bluejacketroboticsbooster@gmail.com or visit the website https:// bluejacketrobotics.wixsite.com/5464.

District revises budget cuts BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

After receiving over 300 survey responses and numerous comments on the proposed budget adjustments for the Cambridge-Isanti School District to overcome a projected $4.9 million shortfall in 2019-2020, the C-I school board has approved a revised list of adjustments. The vote, made during a special board meeting on Thursday, April 4, still includes a large number of staff reductions and other adjustments, but does feature several changes made as a direct result of feedback provided by staff and the general public. “As we said we would, we listened to feedback from staff and from the community,” Superintendent Dr. Ray Queener said. “There were several places where we did make some adjustments from the original recommendation.” Of the changes, the one most noticeably a reaction to feedback was in regard to instructional assistants at the kindergarten level. The original recommendation to eliminate all kindergarten IAs was changed to reducing the number of positions by half. Board member Aaron

Berg asked how those remaining IAs would be divided between the classes. “We are still looking at how that will play out,” Queener said. “It could be one IA between two classrooms, depending on what’s going on in the classrooms. But I think it will be a reduction of paid staff, so there would be eight fulltime people that are serving two classrooms each (rather than 16 part-time staff).” The other significant change was in the activity fees. The new recommendation is to not increase activity fees. In addition, the maximum fee amount a family would have to pay would be increased from $450 to $575, instead of the originally proposed $700 cap. In conjunction, the district will merge the previously separated “athletic fees” and “activity fees” into one fee structure. Under the previous structure, a family would have been capped at $450 for only athletic fees, plus there was a $300 cap for activity fees such as for mock trial, One-Act Play, speech and robotics. Under the new structure, the single cap would be $575 for all athletic and activity fees, which could potentially save families money

if their kids participate in athletics and one of the above four activities. Finally, the district decided not to charge any activity fees for non-MSHSL activities, such as the musical and three-act play. Besides the changes in the cuts, the district approved temporarily setting the fund balance at 7 percent, as opposed to the desired 12.5 percent fund balance. Queener noted that the goal is to return to that 12.5 percent mark no later than the 2021-2022 budget. Queener had previously stated that these changes were possible since the district had calculated making over $5 million in cuts with the idea that it’s much easier to make changes that way. The school board will vote on the specific staffing cuts during their regular April 18 meeting. For a complete list of the approved revised recommendations, go to the district’s website at www.c-ischools.org, click on “Learn about the 2019-20 preliminary budget,” and then “Revised recommendations” under the “About” tab.

The Isanti County Board heard its annual report from Bob Voss, Executive Director of East Central Regional Development Commission (ECRDC), at its meeting April 3. The annual meeting of ECRDC will take place June 24 and include adoption of the new work plan and budget, plus election of new officers. Voss said the board is now 24 members, up from 23, with North Branch receiving an additional representative due to reaching a population of more than 10,000. He also noted the Cambridge-Isanti area is well-represented on the board. Voss went on to talk about the revolving loan fund ECRDC provides for businesses. In this area, ECRDC currently has three active revolving loan funds totaling approximately $120,000. There were five active, Voss noted, but one business filed bankruptcy and another business paid off their loan early. Voss explained the revolving loan fund is a gap lender, filling in the gap of how much a bank will lend and the capital of a new business owner. For instance, if a business needs $100,000, but the bank will only loan $60,000 and the business owner has $20,000 of his or her own, ECRDC will fill the gap by loaning the business owner the additional funds needed. ECDRC is partnering with GPS 45:93, a regional economic development consortium, for opportunity zone marketing. There are plans to provide four education and marketing events in the area regarding economic development and housing impacts, but dates have not been set at this time, according to Voss. Another new program at ECDRC is an inventor and entrepreneur

club, which held an event March 26 in Braham. At the event, a lawyer that specializes in business formation presented on starting different types of businesses, according to Voss. The club is for emerging entrepreneurs – maybe someone working in their garage with an idea they want to move to the next level, marketing it and starting a small business. The club aims to allow members to draw inspiration from others who have started businesses. As an example, Voss said, “You know, going down with a ’73 Pinto with nothing in my pocket but a good idea, and here I am 20 years later with this business.” Meetings of the club take place the fourth Tuesday of the month at East Central Energy in Braham. A new project ERDRC is working on is a regional transportation coordinating council, Voss said. Some of the priorities of the council are to better coordinate transit resources in the region, connect better with transportation services outside the region, and fill in gaps with volunteer drivers and veterans service buses. Currently, the planning phase of the council is coming to an end, and it will be moving into the implementation phase. ODDS AND ENDS In other business, the board: • Held a public hearing and approved amending its zoning ordinance to include short-term rentals and bed and breakfasts. • Approved renewing its contract with the state for Sentence to Serve. • Approved a contract with WaterGuards for invasive species boat inspections at area lakes. • Approved the purchase of software licenses for SafeSignal through Alert Media for additional safety precautions for social workers out in the field doing home visits.

people are sitting here.” Council member Dan Collison made a motion to keep recording meetings as they have in the past, but adding committee of the whole to video-recording and putting on YouTube. Lundeen seconded the motion. Collison also asked to address the staffing issue at the next committee of the whole meeting. COUNCIL APPROVES BUDGETING FOR LEXIPOL In another split vote, this time with Lorinser the sole no vote, the council approved budgeting for the Lexipol software program for the Isanti Police Department in the city’s 2020 budget. “Before we move into this, I have something to say that pertains to the training of the Isanti Police Department,” Johnson said. “The Isanti Police Department has a history of obtaining innovative trainings that are above and beyond the Minnesota Peace Officers standards in minimum training requirements. In addition to professional training, currently there are four Isanti police officers that have earned master’s degrees in criminal justice. Minnesota Post Board requires officers to attend

16 hours of training per year. In 2018, the full-time Isanti police officers averaged a total of 75 hours each.” Noting that an unnamed council member was concerned about there not being enough training in the Isanti Police Department, Johnson said, “I looked further into it, and, by golly, I think we exceed that.” City clerk Katie Brooks informed the council about the polling of police officers regarding using Lexipol. Eight officers thought using Lexipol would be a good idea, three said no, and four were unsure. Those who were unsure or had not used Lexipol in the past had a lot of questions about it. Brooks also noted that officers thought the decision to use Lexipol should wait until a new police chief was named. After the vote regarding budgeting for Lexipol, Lorinser responded to what Johnson said in his introduction of the topic. “My comment about training was specific to one specific instance that we can’t discuss in a public meeting,” Lorinser said. “It wasn’t about our department as a whole, so don’t politically spin items for your benefit.”

canceled again. He kept telling me and Sam to get in the car and that he was our Uber driver. I double checked my app again. My ride was still obviously canceled because they couldn’t find the bar, which I later found out happens often at that place. “I looked at Sam, and we just started sprinting back into the bar,” Netzer said. “The bartender got us a Lyft and went outside with us until our ride got there.”

RECENT EVENTS INCREASE AWARENESS Netzer admits that the story of Samantha Josephson, the Columbia, South Carolina, college student who was brutally murdered after getting into a car she mistakenly thought was her Uber ride, definitely played a part in Netzer and her friend’s actions. “(Things like that) have made me 10 times more anxious and cautious with everything I do, especially since I go to so many concerts a year,” Netzer said. “I think I was much more stern than I usually am as a person. So I do think it influenced the diligence even more.” At the same time, Netzer admits she could see herself doing things completely differently. “I mostly use Uber with my boyfriend, so he’s usually handling it, and I’ve only had to do it a few

lutely see how this tragedy happened. “What’s being shared about Uber is absolutely no joke and 100 percent needs to be paid attention to,” Netzer concluded. “I just hate the fact it took someone dying for us to wake up.”

The Braham Area Girl Scouts are adding a new element to their annual color run – foam. The 5th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Braham Area High School, 531 Elmhurst Avenue S, with 8 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. start time. The non-timed 5k run/walk has always included stations along the route where runners are doused with colored powder, plus a large group color storm at the end. But at this year’s event, participants will run through foam at the start and end of the race. Adults who pay the $10 entry fee by April 28 are guaranteed a t-shirt. Kids under 5 cost $7 and are guaranteed a shirt. Registering after April 28 or day of the race costs $15 for adults and $7 for children

under 5, with no guarantee of a shirt. Some may be available. Entry forms can be found at Braham City Hall and Frandsen Bank or printed from the Facebook page: 5th Annual 5K Foaming Fun - Color Run/Walk. Forms can also be emailed by requesting from the email addresses below. Registration forms and checks must be mailed to: Braham Girl Scouts, 400 Circle Drive, Braham, MN 55006, and postmarked by April 28 to receive lower rate. Braham foundation awards spring grants CONTRIBUTED BRAHAM AREA EDUCATION FOUNDATION

After an outpouring of support over the last 18 months from local businesses, individuals and alumni, the Braham Area Education Foundation recently distributed its second round of classroom grants for the 2018-19 school year. The Foundation sought applications from faculty and staff within the Braham Area School District for projects that expand learning opportunities for Braham’s students in ways that extend beyond the reach of the ordinary school budget. Those grants included funding that will support access to a two-week youth summer musical theater camp for students from third grade through seventh grade; three document cameras to enable elementary school teachers to more effectively display learning materials and integrate their teaching with other classroom technology; digital sign tools enabling the district to more reliably

communicate with students and staff throughout the school buildings; and kits assisting in introducing students to computer science, through lessons about electronics and programming. These grants followed a first round of grants announced in November 2018, and the Foundation looks forward to seeking applications for another round of grants this fall. The Braham Area Education Foundation announced its official launch last fall with a mission of providing Independent School District #314 with enhanced educational opportunities and resources, supporting academic excellence, and encouraging student achievement. The Foundation is a partner fund of the Initiative Foundation in Little Falls, which provides the Foundation with additional professional support in identifying educational needs, building relationships with donors, and managing the Foundation’s investments in Braham’s future.

The Foundation’s priorities were developed after the board gathered input from more than 120 members and friends of the Braham community, and its current focus is on building an endowment fund that will provide a consistent and sustainable source of support for Braham’s students long into the future. The development of that fund is off to a terrific start, thanks in part to a successful Spring Gala in April of 2018, with more than 300 people in attendance to hear a keynote speech from former Minnesota Lieutenant Governor and Braham graduate Marlene Johnson, and a second Spring Gala featuring Braham graduate and entertainer Tim Gabrielson in April of 2019. Thanks to several hundred contributions from individuals and business in the Braham area and beyond, the foundation succeeded in raising more than $100,000 in its first year of operations. To add your support to the Foundation quickly and securely online, visit www.ifound.org/ give-BAEF.

Using metrics from the first four years of operation, the Minnesota Department of Education has determined that the Art and Science Academy, founded in 2014 and located in Isanti, should be recognized as “High Quality” due to the school’s performance on academics and other factors. “What is great about this award,” said Carlo Galeazzi, Ed.D., the school’s founder, “is that the school now becomes eligible to receive two types of federal grants – Replication and Expansion. These grants are provided to replicate the school in another area and to expand to a K-12 school, serving all grades K-12.” The CSP replication grant supports the development and opening of a new charter school based on the educational model of an existing HQCS (high quality charter school). “So basically, if something is done well,” Galeazzi added, “let’s replicate or expand it to allow more students to benefit.” The high-quality status is derived from a comprehensive performance

framework that incorporates multiple measures of school quality as outlined on the Minnesota Department of Education website. These measures include proficiency and growth in reading, math and science. Out of 164 charter schools in Minnesota, only 39 (24 percent) were placed on this list of High Quality Schools last year. Other schools on the list include DaVinci Academy, Nova Classical Academy, Math and Science Academy and Spectrum High School. “I developed the school based on my own personal doctoral research which strongly supports the benefits of arts education and experiential learning,” Galeazzi said. “I’m so proud of the dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff who have supported my vision for ASA. The credit goes to the entire school community. Together we have created a school system where students enjoy coming each day and for having high expectations for our kids.” The Art and Science Academy is a tuition-free public charter school focusing on the arts and sciences. Jacket spring sports manage to squeeze in games before snow flies

BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

C-I’s Cole Olson hits a return at the net during his third doubles match against Mora. So far this season, the Jackets have gotten off to an undefeated start, beating Cloquet 4-3 and Mora 6-1.

C-I’s Jared Bruss slides safely into third during the Jackets’ season-opener at North Branch. C-I’s bats came alive in the game, scoring 16 runs in six innings in their 16-11 win over the Vikings. The game had to be called early due to darkness.

Time to summer-ize your snowmobile BY STEVE CARNEY NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

After a most wonderful winter season, it’s a sad time as we have to put away our sleds for the summer. This past winter was no doubt the best conditions in 10 years for snowmobiling. Now it’s about servicing and putting away our sleds. Here are some tips. 1.) GAS TREATMENT I prefer to use two ingredients in my gas treatment for the summer. First off,

Sea Foam, along with a gas stabilizer, is a great one-two punch for treating your off-season gasoline. Today’s modern gas is not the quality of yesteryear’s. When filling the tank for storage, make sure you use premium gasoline, not the cheap stuff. Poor gas is the biggest enemy of our carburetors. 2.) CARBURETORS It doesn’t hurt to add about a half cup of sled oil to the gas tank to coat the inner workings. This is in addition to the two stabilizing ingredients. I always

remove the spark plugs and shoot some WD-40 into the openings. Don’t forget to turn the gas line on/off switch to off after the gas has been run through the system. 3.) SLED DOLLIES These are wonderful to use and important if you plan on moving the sleds around in the garage or in your storage area. The best ones have a clamping system that use either Velcro or wire harnesses to attach the dolly to the skies. The dollies without an attach-

ment are a real pain. These also protect the carbides and skis from damage on a concrete floor. 4.) BATTERY Always remove the battery from the sled and store it in a cool, dry place such as a basement. I use a small trickle charger/tender, which I leave attached to the battery all summer. The battery is one of the most neglected items when sleds are put away for the summer months.

2019 SPRING ISANTI-CHISAGO COUNTY STAR

countystar.com

APRIL 11, 2019

VIKING SOFTBALL Head coach: Kathy Crudo Assistant coaches: Ron Trunk, Larry Brodin, Rikki

Beaver, Kyle Young, Mikayla Carlson

What was last year’s regular-season record, conference record, and ďŹ nish in the conference/sections? Overall

25-3; conference 10-1. We were Mississippi 8 Conference champions and Section 7AAA champions, finished second in 3A State. Who are the players to watch this year? Macy Brodin (captain, jr. SS), Kristi Pilz (captain, jr. P/OF), Elizabeth Gladitsch (captain, sr. OF), Emma Hurd (so. C), Sophie Smith (so. 3rd base).

What will be the keys to the team’s success this year?

Keys to success this year will be continuing to work hard inside or outside, especially in these days leading up to season. Our captains (Macy Brodin, Kristi Pilz and Elizabeth Gladitsch) will be huge for us this year in truly building a new/keeping the same identity. Keys will be for our returners to truly help mold the newbies and show them what Viking softball entails. What challenges will the team face? Challenges will be figuring out who fits where consistently, also being able to get the necessary amount of practices in to get individually and team ready. What are your goals for the 2018-19 season? Team goals are to take no days off. The group wants to work hard and isn’t afraid to put in the effort it takes. They are to take every throw, every pitch, every swing with 100 percent effort and not get lazy in any situation. Another team goal is to just continue to let softball be fun with the work it entails.

Who is the opponent to watch for this year in the conference/section? No idea. Hopefully us.

BLUEJACKET SOFTBALL Head coach: Brittany Adolphson Assistant coaches: Jill Matson, Brittany Lakeberg, Grace Zierden

What was last year’s regular-season record, conference record, and ďŹ nish in the conference/sections? Last years record: 2-13 Who are the players to watch this year? We have two returning full-time varsity roster players including senior short stop Jay Kotila and sophomore pitcher Annie Johnson. Annie was a starting pitcher in 9th grade and since last year has gained velocity and pitches, along with confidence on the mound. Other leaders would include senior outfielder Kaia Kirkeide and senior catcher Sydney Neubel. All players bring athleticism and grit to their playing performance. Our seniors this year exhibit excellent game knowledge and are some of the fastest players on the roster, who will for sure be big game changers while running the bases. What will be the keys to the team’s success this year? We have an optimistic outlook for this season. We graduated eight seniors last year on our starting roster, so this year will be a change in the whole way the team looks. We have a younger squad, but they are full of raw talent, very quick and have picked up skills and proficiency very well this off-season and pre-season. BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

APRIL 11, 2019

countystar.com

VIKING BOYS TENNIS Head coach: Joel Santjer Assistant coach: Andy Spofford What was last year’s regular-season record, conference record, and finish in the conference/sections? Last year

we finished 6-11 overall, 2-7 in the conference, and finished eighth in the conference Who are the players to watch this year? We’re really junior/senior heavy this year – we have a lot of players who have been with the team for a long time and have really developed well. Our doubles teams should fight well, and Thomas Wurdemann in singles should consistently be fighting for wins as well.

What will be the keys to the team’s success this year?

Our success will revolve around our doubles teams – if they gel and play together as teams, we should be strong there. What challenges will the team face? We’re a small team in the section and conference, so depth is always an issue. This year we’ll be back to having a regular schedule after playing all our matches away last year, so we’re excited to be able to have a solid place to practice and play. What are your goals for the 2018-19 season? We want to continue to grow the program and grow as a team. We’re consistently fighting for points in the section and conference, and look to continue that this year.

Who is the opponent to watch for this year in the conference/section? We love competing against the teams we

play. We’ve had a pretty consistent schedule over the last couple of years and have really gotten to know the other teams in the conference and section well. We’ve got some great talent in the section and conference, and it’s fun to see who ends up ahead in the end.

BLUEJACKET BOYS TENNIS Head coach: Thea Lowman Assistant coaches: Jennifer Magnuson, James Sullivan, Josh Lowman, Lee Orvik

What was last year’s regular-season record, conference record, and finish in the conference/section? Regular season: 10-7, conference: 6-3; conference finish: 4th place; post-season play: beat Grand Rapids 7-0 in the first round of playoffs; lost 3-4 to Anoka in the section quarterfinals

letter winners Wyatt Jones (All-Conference 2018, All-Conference Honorable Mention 2017), Kyle Haupert and Ike Jarvela. Returning junior letter winners Jacob Zacharias (All-Conference 2018), Tristan Day (All-Conference 2018) and Carter Slothouber (All-Conference Honorable Mention 2018). Returning sophomore letter winner Rigo Mork (All-Conference Honorable Mention 2018 and 2017). Returning freshman letter winners Erik Kindem and Alex Magnuson.

What will be the keys to the team’s success this year? Our team consists of nine players with at least one year of varsity experience. The team

is full of athletes who are passionate about the sport and are positive leaders, which is an excellent combination. Utilizing our successes of the past as foundation for match confidence will be key in competing in our tough conference and section.

What challenges will the team face? Replacing seniors lost to graduation is always one of the challenges of a season. Losing two of four singles players from last year’s lineup means reworking doubles pairings.

What are your goals for the 2018-19 season? Overall, our goal is to become a stronger, deeper tennis team by boosting our individual tennis games each time we step on the courts. In doing so, we’re looking to clinch those four team points needed to win each match.

Who is the opponent to watch for this year in the conference/ section? Conference: STMA has been undefeated in the conference the last two seasons with Buffalo and Rogers coming in close behind last year. Section: Defending section champions Duluth East and Elk River.

Who are the players to watch this year? Top players for this season: MollyAnn Harvey (12) – 6-year varsity golfer and captain; Jasmyn Sibell (10), Brooke Hogie (11), Maggie Kurowski (10)

What will be the keys to the team’s success this year? For our team to be successful this season we need our top golfers to be consistent with their scores, and we need to have some others to step up and contribute.

What challenges will the team face? Challenges will include having MollyAnn healthy for the year and overcoming our inexperience.

What are your goals for the 2018-19 season? We would like to be competitive and enjoy the experience of being on the golf team. BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

of the Mississippi 8 conference, we finished fourth in team score and fifth in team points.

Who are the players to watch this year? Sydnie Sampson has

been our lowest scorer and most consistent golfer. She is a senior this season and has worked hard. We expect her to continue to work on improving as well as expanding her skill set. Hailey Bistodeau has been golfing varsity since 7th grade. She has a nice a swing, understands the game and has worked hard at developing her game the correct way. Now as a 9th grader, we expect her this year to have a boost of confidence and shine on the golf course. Chloe Moline strikes the ball well and has some natural talent. As her short game develops this season, it will be fun to watch her on the course as she as the potential to score well. Allison Kress, junior, has experience and works really hard. She makes good contact

key for us is to become consistent and confident on our short game. It is also key that we work on developing a positive mindset for golf by persevering with difficult weather, poor shots and days that are not going so well. We have four returning lettermen, but we also need to find a key fifth and sixth varsity golfer this season. We have a really good group of younger golfers who may be able to step in.

What challenges will the team face? As always we will face some crazy spring weather, so we need to mentally prepare for extreme conditions. We also, as a team, need to solidify our mental game – understanding how to prepare, respond and grow emotionally on the golf course.
