This project draws attention to the troubling issue of identity theft and identity masking in the online world. It’s easy to create a fake email and then use many different platforms to create multiple personas. By now, we all have received that message on Instagram asking us to accept gifts and because they just love your work so much, they will give it to you for free you just pay the shipping. With Covid, many have been exposed to a new wave of scams that sound amazing or scary, which anyone could fall for easily and accept as just someone wanting to help them. Texts, calls, emails, DMs are constantly catching people out. Dissimulation raises awareness for those using the internet with very little security on their accounts or who may give their bank account and personal information too easily, not understanding or knowing the consequences it could have. The portraits catch the eye in all their grotesquerie, forcing the viewer to look further into the image, find the text and be reminded of how easy it is to be fooled by seemingly innocent messages.
