LOCATION : MADRID, SPAIN PROGRAM: ART CENTER

GROUP PROJECT: SADAF MASOODI, ROMINA ANTONIO SOFTWARE: RHINO, ENSCAPE

This building is located in El Centro, the downtown area of Madrid, and was formerly occupied by the WOW Concept Mall. In Madrid there is not much support for for the youth to be set up with success, and as a result, young people can’t afford to stay and feel pushed out of the city, so we created an art center that would empower and welcome the younger generation.

While designing the spaces we wanted to honor the existing architecture of the building, including the ornate columns, arched windows, and grand staircase, while also bringing in new forms of digital art technology. We felt that this approach would best showcase Madrid’s historic architecture while using new forms of technology and art through an immersive multisensory art exhibition that incorporates all 5 senses.

CLIENT: BIOME MAKERS

AREA : 25,000 SF

PROGRAM: TENANT IMPROVEMENT

PROJECT LENGTH: 5 WEEKS

SOFTWARE: REVIT, RHINO, ENSCAPE

This office space was designed for a startup tech company, Biome Makers which integrates soil microbiology into agricultural decision-making to optimize farming practices and reverse the degradation of arable soils. Their mission is to create a more sustainable world through soil recovery and their vision is to bring ecological balance into modern global food production systems.

During the design process, I incorporated Biome Maker’s core values: science-driven, transparency, and leadership. The open office was designed for flexible and unassigned seating, which allows employees to take initiative on where to seat themselves, and custom semi-private phone rooms/private offices are scattered throughout.

The material selection throughout the entire building was made with sustainability in mind, which is one of their values, so I made it a priority to choose companies whose values aligned with Biome Makers

This custom light fixture was designed based on a micrograph image of a clam shrimp. Clam shrimps are organisms found in puddles and small pools of water. They are tiny, translucent creatures with clamlike shells on their backs and long feathery hairs on their legs. This particular photographed clam shrimp is a female, only 5 millimeters long, and the cluster of circles represents the eggs she was carrying on her back.

These organisms exist only in temporary habitats. They are home to the grasslands when the snow melts and creates pools of water. During the next 6 weeks, the eggs are able to hatch, grow into adulthood, and reproduce more eggs for the next year. The eggs will then hibernate in the soil once the water has dried up, able to survive in extremely warm and cold climates. The process is then repeated the following year if the organisms are able to complete their life cycle before the pools of water dry up. When the following spring arrives, the snow will melt again and produce more bodies of water, allowing the eggs to hatch and begin the cycle all over again.

Once identified the characteristics of the clam shrimp I wanted to use as inspiration, such as aspects of layering, translucency, and focal glow, I began making study models that ultimately lead me to my final prototype of the light fixture.

Using the paper mache method, I created shells using a yoga ball as a mold and then sewed the individual shells together. Using a laser cutting machine I cut out the shape for the base of my fixture using balsa wood and installed 4 dimmable LED puck lamps with 2700 Warm white light to create a soft focal glow on the walls.

The name “Barena” in Italian means shoal, a type of sandbar that is less linear and more rounded. Barena is intended to be used in primarily residential spaces, creating the perfect ambiance and warm cozy mood lighting for any living room, seating area, library, or bedroom.

This chair was upcycled from an existing mid-century modern chair. After disassembling the chair I re-imagined a new design, and how I could make the significant oval on the chair back a part of the design.

After I removed the upholstery and repainted the frame, I laser cut a new base and replicated the same oval hole shape in the center, then I pressure fit acrylic to fit in the hole.

Finally I drilled pilot holes around the existing hole in the back of the chair to create a loom with cotton thread. Finally, I used three different textured yarns to create a weaving on the back of the chair, adding depth and personality.
