Classrooms on the Ground Level are designed radially around a giant California Sycamore tree that allows the classrooms to open to the surrounding landscape that allows for learning and play. The nature-infused campus is a collection of spaces that are woven together within the natural context of vegetation, gathering spaces, and interactive places that stimulate the senses and extend learning beyond the indoor classrooms.

The overall rhythm allows for an integration of education in both the indoor and outdoor spaces. Cantilevering roofs on the second level allow light to enter the classrooms through the clerestories and the warm reflection via the exposed wood ceilings. Clerestories frame the nature that can be viewed from inside the classrooms, promoting a peaceful learning environment. Rooftop gardens provide access to nature, collaborative spaces, and respite spaces for the users.

The Westmark Lower School is a 15,000 sqft., Net-zero energy education facility designed for children with learning differences. The design focuses on flexible indoor-outdoor learning environment, featuring mass timber and other natural materials. The lowest level of the school, originally designed with rammed earth, was constructed with board-formed concrete to integrate with the site and create a natural environment for the children and educators. The Westmark School combines various materials and textures to create a tactile environment for the users. The metal panels used for the exterior roof overhangs were custom fabricated. Using Revit, faces of the completed 3D modeled metal structure were extracted and laid out to accurately extract dimensions for the fabricators and minimize waste.

Materials used on Westmark interiors were thoughtfully designed to minimize distractions for the students in the classrooms. Natural materials, such as pre-fabricated mass timber and stone, to create a bright and engaging environment. CLT was an innovative material to use for both the structural qualities and the natural finish. The school’s structural elements are left exposed to showcase how the building was put together.

The Viterbi Family Vision Research Center (VFVRC)is a new 100,000 sf research center located on the Healthcare Campus at UC San Diego. Once built, the facility will be an innovative research center dedicated to the treatment and cure of all eye diseases while also serving as an educational tool for the university and the community. The building is a gateway to the La Jolla medical campus creating a welcoming presence through the facades and material choices, complementing the existing surrounding buildings. The VFVRC houses wet and dry laboratories, vivarium, offices, support spaces, storage, clinical trial, retail (café), conference center, offices and administrative programs.

Rhino. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign The goal of this assignment was to develop and detail an ADU Owner’s Manual that will be used as a vehicle to describe the company’s designs and services to a clientele.

The Detailed Manual highlights sustainability, craftsmanship, and the ability for a client to DIY an ADU home in their own backyard. Through a partnership with the company, the site itself can be a means of cutting costs in the construction process and can be done by any willing homeowner, with the proper instructions. The main methods of construction chosen were those that used natural materials and resonated with the hand-crafted spirit: rammed earth and gabion walls. These systems of construction were thought to complement each other and the program spaces they would contain.

In addition, the project presents a solution to the housing shortage in Los Angeles by including various typical lot sizes, similar to those available in the city. With the lot sizes as the constraints, the manual provides options for the ADUs to meet the needs of each different owner looking to construct an ADU in Los Angeles. The intent of the manual is to communicate clear intentions of the process through graphic means, the simplicity of the drawings, and models.

SEA-CRETION: Symbiotic Growing Architecture Farming and the global supply chain in the 21st century have become unwieldy systems with expanding subsystems and middle men. The system in place to get food to table can be scaled down to a local level. This proposal creates a selfsustainable closed loop infrastructure that brings together aquaculture functions, reducing the dependency on imports, and the effect of agriculture on climate change. Sea-cretion is a slowly growing architecture from the ocean’s most abundant and self-replenishing natural resource and is further designed to create local food opportunities and reduce imports into the Los Angeles Port. The project is a vertical aquaculture supply chain that connects the below-the-surface activities of farming with the surface level programs of a marketplace, restaurants, and port activities. The proposed creation of a closed loop aquaculture system in which the ocean and land work together to develop a new port archetype, through solutions that optimize urban and natural resources. In the year 2030, Seacretion becomes an integral center of seafood cultivation, commerce, consumption, and community.
