Obituaries... Michael Werley

DENVER, Colo.—Michael Werley, 65, died suddenly of natural causes on June 11, 2013, at his home in Denver. He was born in Crystal Falls on Aug. 21, 1947, the son of the late Bud and Mary Olive Werley. He attended school in Crystal Falls and graduated in 1965. Mike proudly served his country as a United States Marine from 1965-1969. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mike received several commendations as a Marine for his service. Mike attended Bryant and Stratton College of Business in Milwaukee with an emphasis in accounting. Upon completion, he accepted a position with the Federal Reserve Bank in Denver, Colorado. During his thirty-four years with the bank, he frequently received recognition for his reliability and diligence as an employee. He retired in 2009 and enjoyed his life in Denver. He was an avid runner and was known in the neighborhood as “the friendly runner”. Mike is survived by three siblings; Maureen Mainville of Crystal Falls, Paul (Mary Ann) Werley of Hurricane Utah, and Bob (Sue) Werley of Menasha, Wis.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Patrick. Graveside services will be held in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery on Friday, July 12 at 11 a.m. Rev. Cheryle Spicer will officiate. The Eastside Veterans Council will accord Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in his memory. Rest in peace, Mike, with Mom, Dad, and Pat. Lillian Nelson

EUGENE, Ore.—Lillian M. Nelson, 98, formerly of Crystal Falls, passed away Friday, June 21, 1013. She was born March 8, 1915, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Harry and Ida (Dabb) Urban. She attended the Crystal Falls Schools, graduating from Crystal Falls High School with the Class of 1934. On July 16, 1935, Lillian married George Nelson in Crystal Falls and the couple lived throughout the country. After George’s retirement, they purchased a home on Camp Lake near Iron River, where for many years they enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls, as well as painting and making dolls and doll clothes, crafting, basket weaving and cards. She was a member of the Methodist Church and an active member of the Eastern Star and worked at the Iron County Fair for the Eastern Star. Lillian was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time with her family. Following her husband’s death after 67 years of marriage, she made her home at an independent retirement community in Eugene, OR, where she could be near her daughter and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, who passed away on May 19, 2003, brothers, Otto and James Urban, and sister, Mrs. Earl Janet Bengry. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly (Paul) Jackson of Eugene; grandchildren, Jeffery (Miwha) Johnson, Kara Pattinson, MD, and Jameson Downs; great-grandchildren, Alex Pattinson, Ailey Johnson, Josiah Downs, and Isabella Downs; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, July 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, with her nephew, Leonard Urban to officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Jeffrey Evanoff

ANCHORAGE, AK—Jeffrey M. Evanoff, 42, formerly of Caspian, unexpectedly passed away June 24, 2013, at his home. Jeffrey was born Nov. 6, 1970, in Crystal Falls, the son of Larry and Bonnie (Gross) Evanoff. He attended the West Iron County Schools and graduated with the Class of 1989. He then attended Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University, earning his Bachelors in Environmental Engineering. Jeffrey married Lisa Alleva on July 22, 2006, in Anchorage and made their home there. Jeffrey was an Alaska State Trooper from 1999 to 2009. He was currently employed as a safety Regional Director for Linc Energy. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian where he had been an altar boy. Jeffrey enjoyed hunting, fishing and driving his Harley. He was an avid Packer fan. He is survived by his wife, Lisa and daughter, Olivia, of Anchorage; parents, Larry and Bonnie Evanoff of Caspian; sister, Jody Evanoff Sleik of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; nephews, Reece and Rylee; mother-in-law, Margaret Levra of Hurley, Wis.; fatherin-law, John Alleva of Anchorage; brother-in-law, John (Mary) Alleva Jr. of Alaska; sister-in-law, Kristie Alleva of Alaska; aunt, Patty (John) Roberts of Iron River; uncle, Ted Gibneski of Iron River; aunt, Donna (Bob) Sweinty of Washington; aunt, Carol Borns of Washington; uncle, James Evanoff of Washington; cousins, Timothy and John Jr. Roberts of Iron River. Theodore “Ted” Gawry

MARQUETTE—Theodore “Ted” Martin Gawry, 81, also affectionately known by family and special friends as “Toggo,” died Wednesday morning, July 3, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born Jan. 16, 1932, in Iron River, a son of the late Teofil and Mary (Kotowfki) Gawrylczyk. Ted was raised in Iron River and attended Iron River High School where he played basketball and served as class president prior to graduating in 1950. Ted earned a Bachelor’s degree in science and math at NMU where he lettered in varsity basketball and was a member of the Tri MU Fraternity. He was drafted by the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. On June 19, 1954, he married the former Elsie Mae Vadnais at St. Michael Catholic Church. Ted taught math and chemistry at Oxford High School, where he also coached basketball and baseball until 1962 before taking a job as a systems engineer in Detroit for IBM. Ted advanced to management for IBM and eventually relocating to the IBM site in Boca Raton, Florida. He retired in 1989. Ted loved attending horse and dog races while in Florida. He also enjoyed trips to the Upper Peninsula with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mae Gawry of Marquette; children, David (Kim) Gawry of Waterford and Tedi (Gustavo) Wells of Austin, Tex.; grandchildren, Scott and Molly Gawry of Waterford; nieces and nephews, Geri Wiora, Janice Zieler, Patsy Stuglis, Roxann Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Carol Vadnais, Barbara Noll, Karen Mullane, Bill Lakenen and Rayme Martineau; great-nieces, Kelcie and Ariana Martineau, who regarded Ted as “grandpa”; and sister’s-in-law, Beverly Johnson of Oxford and Kathleen Lakenen of Marquette. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings. WI Library Friends plan used book sale IRON RIVER—The Friends of the West Iron District Library will hold its annual used book sale and western photo shoot in conjunction with Rodeo Market Day on Friday, July 19. Both events will begin at 9 a.m. outside the entrance of the library. The library is asking the public to donate used books for the fundraiser. The following types of books will be accepted: fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, westerns, hardcover, paperback, craft and gardening books and more. Textbooks, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest Condensed, Harlequin romances and magazines will not be accepted. Books may be dropped off

at the library from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Tuesday, July 16 through Thursday, July 18. Books will be viewed at the time of drop-off. In addition to purchasing used books, the public can also participate in a western photo shoot. Groups of family and friends can take themselves back to the Wild West with costumes and props provided by the library. Photos will cost $3 and be available to take home within minutes of posing. All proceeds from the used book sale and photo shoot will be used to support library events and programs. Call the library at 265-2831 for more information.

CRYSTAL FALLS— Keith Hansen, 29, of Eagle River, Wis., was sentenced on charges of attempted assault on a police officer. Hansen will serve 20 days in jail with a credit for two and he must serve nine months of probation. He must pay $715 of court fees and fines. Hansen is not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs or be in the presence of anyone who is using or consuming. He may not display any threatening or harassing behaviors or enter any bars or taverns. Aubrey Persson, 28, of Iron River was charged on one count of attempted telecommunications services. She was sentenced to 70 days in jail with a credit for all 70 days. She must pay court fees and fines of $535. Kyle Remer, 24, of Iron River was charged on one count of assault and battery. He was sentenced to 93 days of jail with a credit for 48. He must also pay court fees and fines of $435. Kevin Tasson of Ishpeming, 48, was charged with a non-sufficient funds check of $100 or less and was sentenced to 40 days in jail with a credit for two and the option to complete eight days through 16 days of community service. The balance will be held in abeyance. He must pay his court fees and fines of $920.86 within 30 days or he will serve the 30 days in jail. Amber Mendoza, 21, of Iron River was charged with operating without a license. She will complete four months of probation and must pay court fees and fines of $515. She was sentenced to serve 34 days in jail with the option to serve four days through eight days of community service. The balance will be held in abeyance as long as she pays her fines and costs within 30 days. Michael Patraw-St. John, 22, of Crystal Falls was charged with attempted use of controlled substance. He must serve nine months of probation and must pay fines and court fees totaling $1,015. He is not allowed to consume alcohol or illegal drugs or be in the presence of anyone doing so. He will be subject to random breathalyzers and drug testing. His license will be suspended for a period of one year. He was sentenced to serve 20 days in jail with a credit for three. He will serve an additional 12 days; three weekends in jail and the balance may be completed through 10 days of community service. Kyle Versailles, 19, of Crystal Falls was charged with larceny, less than $200. He will be on probation for four months and he must pay court fees and fines of $415. He was sentenced to serve 16 days in jail, the first 10 to be served immediately with a credit for one day. The balance may be completed through 10 days of community service. Jesse Lowden, 30, of Iron River was charged with disorderly person disturbing the peace. He will complete six months of probation and sentenced to serve 10 days in jail with a credit for two and the balance may be completed through 16 days of community service. He must also pay court fees and fines totaling $455. He may not display any threatening, harassing or intimidating behaviors. Jered Applin, 28, of Iron

River was charged with operating while impaired. He must complete six months of probation and pay court fees and fines of $705. He must serve seven days in jail with a credit for two. The balance may be served through ten days of community service. Applin is not allowed to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and is subject to random breathalyzers and drug testing. Darren Mercier, 45, of Iron River was charged with hunting and fishing without a license. He will complete five months of probation and must pay court fees and fines of $635. He was sentenced to serve 12 days in jail with a credit for two, and the balance may be completed through 20 days of community service. He must also forfeit all weapons, and his hunting privileges will be revoked for the remainder of 2013 as well as 2014. Gregory Lemke, 51, of Iron River was charged with failure to report an accident. He must serve six months of probation and pay court fees and fines of $455. He was sentenced to serve seven days in jail. He is not allowed to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and is subject to breathalyzers and drug testing. Travis Persson, 37, of Kingsford was charged with operating while intoxicated. He must complete 18 months of probation and pay court fees and fines of $835. His sentence of one year in jail will be held in abeyance pending his successful completion of drug court. He may not consume alcohol or drugs, associate with anyone consuming and he may not enter any bars or taverns. He will be subject to random breathalyzers and drug testing. Cory Walsh, 30, of Iron River was charged with driving with a suspended license. He must complete five months of probation and pay court fees and fines of $535. He must also serve ten days in jail with a credit for two. He has the option to serve the balance with 16 days of community service. Dominic Connell, 41, of Iron River was charged with operating without a license. He will need to complete three months of probation and pay court fees and fines of $395. He was also sentenced to two days in jail that may be completed with four days of community service. Christopher Nordang, 21, of Iron River was charged with driving: failure to maintain security. He was sentenced to three months of probation and must pay court fees and fines of $395. He was also sentenced to three days in jail that can be served through six days of community service. Kelly Logan, 41, of Iron River was charged with operating while impaired, second offense and one count of driving with a suspended license. She was sentenced with 12 months of probation and must pay court fees and fines totaling $1225 plus $435 for driving with a suspended license. She was also sentenced to 55 days in jail with a credit for 27. She must serve 20 days immediately and the balance may be paid with 16 days of community service. She is not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs or associate with anyone using or consuming. She is subject to random breathalyzers and drug testing.
