The leading Irish businesses in Britain Companies100 2022
18-20 The future is green
Tom O’Mahony’s firm Maylim Ltd is bringing natural beauty back to our cities one project at a time
Little book of contacts Where to find 2022’s leading Irish companies
Irish designer Simone Rocha continues to evolve. The daughter of fashion designer John Rocha, she trained at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and at Central Saint Martins, London, before going on to carve out a successful niche of her own in the fashion world after launching her graduate collection in 2010 at the Tate Modern and at London Fashion Week (LFW). Based in London for many years, her unique collections, boasting her trademark take on tomboy femininity, are by now a LFW staple. This year the designer turned her attention to the world of art. Rocha curated girls, girls, girls, a major new group show of work by female artists which is being exhibited at Lismore Castle Arts in Co. Waterford.
“I wanted to invite a group of artists who inspire, challenge and engage with femininity and its subversive characteristics, reflecting a female viewpoint today,” she explains.

AS the first year, post-Covid, which could be deemed somewhat normal in business terms, 2022 has proved what most of us already knew - that the Irish firms operating across Britain are made of strong stuff.
Their resilience and ability to navigate a path through the pandemic, as well as Brexit and, elsewhere this year, the impacts of the ongoing war in Ukraine, is evident throughout these pages.
Our Companies 100 2022 edition is full of firms – many longstanding, others relatively new to their fields – who have managed to stay afloat despite multiple lockdowns severely restricting their ability to do business.
They have adapted their offerings and streamlined their approach in order to make it through an unprecedented global crisis.
The experience of the past few years has been different for each and every one of these firms, of course, but one of the things they all have in common today is that they’ve survived.
They made sacrifices, took the losses, experienced the hardships and uncertainty and they are still here to tell the tale.
What’s more, they continue to provide top quality services to their clients - with the future looking bright once again for many now that the worst of the pandemic has passed.
So yes, 2022 is a significant milestone year.
It is the year when those businesses could fully return to doing what they do best.
And it is extra significant for some of our Companies 100 firms as 2022 marks an anniversary year for them too.
From Tom O’Mahony, our cover star, whose firm Maylim Ltd, a specialist landscape contractor, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, to the likes of Clifford Devlin Ltd, who are celebrating 60 years since their foundation, and JJ Rhatigan & Co Ltd, who are now in business for 70 years, there are many milestone celebrations happening among the Irish firms in Britain this year.
A huge congratulations to them all.
Here’s to many more successful years ahead for every firm featured in our listings.

Privately-owned, the company began as a civil engineering and groundworks contractor, founded by Leitrim native Pat Gallagher in 1973. The Gallagher Group has evolved both in size and in its range of distinct complementary services – building, civil engineering, aggregates, ready mixed concrete, Kentish ragstone building stone, recycling, landfill, property development and estate management. In 2021/22, the Gallagher Group was involved in some significant projects, principally, the Sevington Inland Border Facility in Ashford, Kent. This was the largest of the new Inland Border facilities constructed. The project was a cross departmental scheme including the Department for Transport, DEFRA, Kent County Council and Amey, with the Gallagher Group taking a prominent role throughout. The integrated approach that the Gallagher Group adopts with its Construction and Aggregates companies was instrumental in the successful completion of this complex project. Gallagher Aggregates also increased their geographical coverage in 2021 with the acquisition of five additional ready mix concrete depots in Kent to broaden its established operation. This marked the Group’s first external acquisition, to support 50 years of organic growth.

FUTURE VISION
Public spaces in our towns and cities are destined to be green, beautiful and good for the planet, claims Maylim’s Tom O’Mahony. Fiona Audley reports.
COMMERICAL and public buildings of the future are destined to be surrounded by soft natural landscapes that promote community cohesion, personal wellbeing, and environmental responsibility.
That is the prediction of Thomas ‘Tom’ O’Mahony, the Irishman at the head of Maylim Ltd - a specialist landscape contractor located in London which has already transformed some of the capital’s most iconic urban locations into pockets of tranquility and greenery nestled within the city centre.
The Limerick man, who was born in London but moved to Athea, his father’s hometown, at the age of seven, returned to England after completing his Leaving Cert.
He explains that he always had an interest in the world of construction and that would later lead him to choose a career in engineeringwhich he embarked upon in London rather than returning to Dublin as planned.
Today, more than 30 years later, he is Managing Director at Maylim, a niche business which predominately works on public realm, hard and soft landscaping schemes, but also completes highway and civil engineering projects, and boasts a £60million annual turnover.
“I came over from Ireland at 18, after I finished my leaving cert, and was due to go back to Dublin to do engineering but I stayed here, I got the love of London,” the 51-year-old told The Irish Post.
“I was born here originally but I had lived in Ireland for about 15 years before I came back,” he added.
“So, I got here, trained as an engineer, and I worked for McNicholas for almost 20 years, that’s brown Macs, before they were bought by
Skanska.
“That’s my background really, the typical boy over from Ireland, who worked on building sites as a labourer and put myself through college at night-time and it all kind of grew from there.”
Mr O’Mahony, a dad-of-two who was initially inspired by his own father’s career in the construction sector in London, admits that once he had entered the industry, he quickly realised his passion was for working on public spaces.
“As an engineer I did lots of work, very much in the public realm and in public spaces, and that started my love for it really,” he explained.
“So, when the opportunity with Maylim came it was perfect for me.”
The company founder explains: “Maylim’s work is very much high-end, hard and soft landscaping on residential, commercial developments and that’s generally what we do – with a lot of design and build work behind it. It’s a very niche market.”
He added: “When people ask what we do I ask if they know Kings Cross and its regeneration, and tell them what Kings Cross looks like today, well we have been there almost 10 years now. That’s what we do.
“There’s a building and we do everything outside that building, unless it’s a roof garden, which we do a lot more of these days too.
“So, we do everything from the sewage engineering, to remediation, drainage, concrete work, substrata work, to the finishing, water features, trees, street furniture, that kind of thing.”
Mr O’Mahony has seen his firm, which he co-runs with Commercial Director Gerard Purcell, grow steadily over the years - with their turnover increasing from £1million in 2002 to £3million in 2009, £14million in 2014 and £60million in 2021.
“From about 2014 it just grew,” Mr O’Mahony
admits.
“After that it went through the roof - as we finished one job we would go on to the next job.
“You would create a relationship with the architects, the engineers, the clients on a job and then just move on to the next job together.
“That’s how we have grown the business. I’d call it steady growth although when you look at the graph it is quite steep.”
So, what is the secret to their success so far?
“Are we successful,” Mr O’Mahony ponders, “I think not, I think we can do better, I always think we can, but that is me. I think we can get better and better and better.
“But we’re an honest firm - we are very black and white, and we are hard-working,” Mr O’Mahony adds.
“Our big saying in the company is you never leave a bad job behind.
“I don’t care if it costs us money, you have got to leave a good job.
“Once you leave a good job behind, where the quality is good, you leave a good sense of getting the job done, and you get a job done on time, you will always have another client and a next project.
“That’s the big thing, we are always trying to please, that’s a big thing for us.
“It starts from the beginning, that journey, you win a job, you make sure you are close to the client, you create that relationship through the course of that project, and you make sure that you still live that job for the three or four years after it finishes.
“You still care about that job.”
He explains: “We are not a concrete frame company where you put a concrete frame up and then it gets cladded and finished and that’s it done; you can’t see it ever again.
“We are something you see all the time; you will always see us.
“You see us when we are building it, because we are always on the outside, we are always the first people you see on site, and then you see it after its finished, and it’s very important, that after sale maintenance and management is key.
“So, we follow something called the Maylim Way, which is about how we look, how we are on site, how we act towards clients.
“That’s very much driven from the soul of the company,” Mr O’Mahony admits.
“We are non-contractual, we like to create relationships, we are good at that, it is what we like to do, and generally most of our work is repeat work. Which is a good position to be in.”
The shift in how society views its public spaces and what builders and property developers are expected to produce when creating new ones – or updating old ones – has also had a part to play in the firm’s continued success.
“More people will live in towns and cities, it’s quite clear, people will keep moving to cities, so the big thing now is to create hubs in cities,’ Mr
O’Mahony explains.
“So, they are places where you live, you work, you sleep, you have the restaurants, cafes, nice parks, that’s the big thing.
“That really is key for developers now to sell their spaces in buildings.”
And Maylim has been creating such spaces in the capital for many years already.
“Take Battersea for instance,” Mr O’Mahony says, “we have just finished Battersea Phase 2, we did Phase 1 and Phase 2 at Battersea Power Station.
“That is really about public space, about a space to go to live, to shop, to eat, to relax, that’s what these developments are about.
“More people will come to cities, but they want these areas of beauty to live in.
“It’s about carbon as well,” he adds, “it’s all about the environment, more trees, more landscaping, it’s about trying to keep the temperature of the world down and more soft spaces will help to do that, without a doubt.”
Battersea and Kings Cross are just a couple of the many prestigious projects that have
benefitted from the landscaping work of Maylim over the years.
The company’s trademark high quality workmanship is also to be found at the likes of Exchange Square, close to London’s Liverpool Street Station, as well as One Bishopgate Plaza and One Crown Plaza elsewhere in the city.
The firm, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – having been founded in 2002, believes such public space transformations will only continue in the years ahead.
So now it is setting its sights on expanding geographically to stay ahead of the competition when it comes to winning those all-important contracts.
“Our next business plan is geographical really, it’s about growth,” Mr O’Mahony admits.
“It’s about staying in London, which is our core market, but also going into Dublin, to do what we do there, where I think there is a real niche for us too.”
He explains: “Dublin is slightly behind London when it comes to public realm landscaping, I would say.
“But the big firms, the likes of Google, Apple and Linked In are all going in there and they want the big public spaces.
“They want the big offices, and they want public spaces around their buildings and that’s what we see a really big push on now.”
Maylim is already in talks with Irish property developers Iput, who are contracted to build Linked In’s Dublin headquarters.
“Iput came to us actually,” Mr O’Mahony admits, “they saw what we did at Kings Cross and they want to see what we can do. So, we have almost negotiated our first project there.”
He adds: “So for us going forward now the growth is geographical, in Birmingham, as we are starting to work there, as well as growing more clients in London and then really Dublin is our big focus.
“It’s about delivering the same kind of work that we love in these new areas.
“And I think we are more passionate about the work itself than anything really,” he admits.
“Yes, the pounds and the pennies matter, but we are really passionate about delivering really
high-end good quality hard and soft landscaping and Dublin really has a big focus on that now.”
Maylim’s vision of a future where all public spaces come complete with beautiful, green open areas to be enjoyed by all, could well be a reality before long, it would seem.
“It’s a big thing and a huge change,” Mr O’Mahony admits.
“If you look at 20 years ago, we were doing quality hard and soft landscaping projects outside buildings, and they were all grey - grey granite and grey concrete slabs.
“Now we are going back on projects which we did 20 years ago, and we are ripping them all out and making them all green, a lot more green,” he adds.
“They are now spaces where people can sit and relax, have a coffee, get their laptop out, that’s the sort of spaces that are being created really.”
And it’s a job that never gets tiresome for Mr
O’Mahony or his workforce, who get to see the fruits of their labour anytime they chose to revisit their previously completed projects.
“We have a number of different divisions and departments now, and so the day to day work life for me as Managing Director is really getting the heads of those departments, the senior management team together and really driving the business forward, driving the marketing, but I am still really hands on, too,” the entrepreneurial businessman admits.
“I am still a guy with a pair of boots on, I go out on site to most sites probably every two weeks, and that’s genuinely what I like to do.
“And the finished projects are always gorgeous,” he adds.
“We just finished one in Exchange Square, one of our bigger projects for British Land, and it was about a year and a half in the making.
“Even now when you walk in there it is just gorgeous.
“You walk around the corner from Liverpool Street Station, and you have this huge square of soft seating areas and little cafes and it’s just lovely, and that will be there forever, it will look that way for at least 15 to 20 years.
“We now have a maintenance division where we go in and maintain all the softs, and it is just lovely, and it is real peace and quiet, right in the middle of London.
“It’s just tranquil and those are the types of spaces that you are trying to create.”
He adds: “It’s the same with buildings now, a lot of builders are doing a lot more roof gardens, where, since Covid, there was not enough space in offices, so they wanted to create more space.
“What the building planners are doing now is creating more outdoor terraces and outdoor roof gardens, so that people who work in these offices can actually walk out the door into a soft environment, now that’s a massive shift.
“When you are trying to get people back into the office, that’s what you need to give them.
“They want space, they want a place where they can come and take off the suit jacket for a bit.
“There’s been a shift in the past two years, everyone is a bit more casual, everyone has a laptop and if you have an office where you can walk out onto the balcony and sit down at a table in amongst the greenery and start to work, well, that is the future.”

Founded by former miner Joseph ‘Josie’ Gallagher, the firm has now served the tunnelling industry for 40 years. Josie started the business in 1982 at the age of 37, with just £5 in his pocket. Four decades later it has expanded into the largest tunnelling subcontractor in the UK, and Josie, who remains Chairman of the Group, continues to handpick the personnel brought into the firm in order to ensure that the original drive and technical capability, which have always been hallmarks of the business, have not been diluted. His passion for tunnelling has cascaded down through the family too, with some of his children now members of the Strategic Board and appointed into integral roles to ensure the legacy continues. The Group is currently going through a succession process with the Gallagher family to ensure its future security as the second generation take the reins in the coming years. CEO Steve Harvey, who has been with the business for the last 12 years, said: “It is fantastic to
be celebrating 40 years since the inception of Joseph Gallagher Ltd and to now have a Group with a turnover of more than £100million with the same ethos that Josie set out with all those years ago. The 40-year celebration coincides with the culmination of a succession process commenced two years ago which will see Josie’s legacy safeguarded and the next generation take the business forward in the years to come.” Founder Josie added: "When I formed the company - Joseph Gallagher London Ltd (as it was known then) – back in 1982, I think I can be honest in saying that I didn’t envision it still being in business some forty years later. I’m very proud and humbled by the success and longevity the company has enjoyed over the last few decades and, in all honesty, it is a testament to the hard work, skill and expertise of all the men and women the business has employed over the last 40 years. It always has been - and always will be – the workforce that makes the company what it is.”

FOUNDED: 1977
STAFF: 10,000+
TURNOVER: £2.5bn
Laing O’Rourke founder, majority shareholder and Group CEO - Ray O'Rourke - stepped down from the Group Chief Executive position this month. The move comes almost 45 years after Mr O’Rourke founded the business with his brother Des. As of September this year, the Irish entrepreneur, who was born in Mayo, but came to Britain in 1966, will join Des as a Deputy Chairman of the Group. In this role he will “continue his focus on innovation, people development and major clients”, Laing O’Rourke Group Chairman Sir John Parker confirmed in a statement. Taking his place is Seamus French, the former CEO of Anglo American’s Bulk Commodities and Other Minerals division. One of Mr O’Rourke’s final initiatives to oversee as CEO was the implementation of a new Equal Parenting policy at the firm. In July Laing O’Rourke launched an equal parenting approach for all its staff across the UK and Australia, regardless of how they become a parent. From October, every employee will have access to six months’ parental leave on full pay, and the leave is also available for parents who adopt or welcome a baby via surrogacy. Effective immediately is a new pregnancy loss policy that provides paid leave for any employee who has suffered, or whose partner or surrogate has suffered, a loss of pregnancy. Mr O’Rourke explained of the move: “When I joined the industry more than 50 years ago, I saw my own role as the traditional family breadwinner. The world is now a very different place, and we value modern and diverse family structures and new opportunities that balance careers and childcare. I’ve always been an advocate for innovation and modern methods of construction, and those approaches should not just be in the technical ways we work – but in the ways we recruit, deploy, reward, and support our people.” He added: “One thing remains the same as when I became a parent, it’s the most common, most disruptive life event for most of our people – in a good way. So why wouldn’t the business do everything it can to support people fairly during this change. No matter who you are or how your family comes about, at Laing O’Rourke we’ll take care of your career while you do what needs to be done at home.”

The business plan successfully matched supermarket locations to Irish demographics and today can count Selfridges, Ocado Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons among its customers. In 2006 YourIrishShop.com was set up
to offer a service to consumers outside the catchment area of the supermarkets. This was relaunched just this year and remains the largest dedicated online retailer of Irish food products in Britain. In 2012 O’Kane Direct Ltd was formed in response to the ever-growing
amount of trade inquiries from smaller retailers and the Irish pub sector. Current customers include Nisa, Budgens, Costcutter and Londis. After operating from separate sites for a number of years, 2018 saw all parts of the business coming together in a superb new head office and distribution centre in Perivale, Middlesex. Two years later the Cork based subsidiary Bia Foods International Exports Ltd was established to robustly counter the stiff challenges posed by Brexit and the customs chaos which ensued. This has ensured the continued supply of Irish food staples not only to the UK market but also to Canada, Australia, and of course the rest of the EU. The firm works closely with many Irish brands, including Barry’s, Tayto, Club, Clonakilty, Erin, Boland’s, Smithwicks, Ballymaloe, Oatfield, Chef, Galtee and Flahavans.

In 2008 she graduated with a BA in Fashion from The National College of Art and Design in Dublin continuing in 2010 to graduate from the acclaimed Fashion MA at Central Saint Martin’s College, London. The designer debuted at London Fashion Week in September 2010, and now has three standalone stores in London, New York and Hong Kong. Rocha has evolved into an internationally renowned and award-winning brand and the designer has shown her collections in some of the capital’s most historical and culturally relevant buildings – including the Tate Modern, Lancaster House, The Royal Academy of Art, Southwark Cathedral and and Alexandra Palace. This year the London-based designer, who is married and has a child, turned her hand further towards the world of art. Rocha curated girls, girls, girls, a major new group show of work by female artists which is being exhibited at Lismore Castle Arts in Co. Waterford until October. “I wanted to invite a group of artists who inspire, challenge and engage with femininity and its subversive characteristics, reflecting a female viewpoint today,” the designer explains. “There is a contrast of forms and media – art, sculpture and photography – and I am interested in exploring how the works engage with each other.” She added: “I want the exhibition to be an exploration of femininity in an honest way by having the presence of each artist in the room together, with their multiple viewpoints, and bringing their works into conversation with each other. As a designer, artists and image-makers have been a longstanding source of inspiration to me. The female spirit and experience have been a strong focus of my work from the beginning.
My engagement with femininity must also always have a balancetraditional craft techniques versus masculine tailoring, natural forms vs man-made. I am always pushing to make something traditionally feminine in a modern, off-kilter world.”
