Ukrainian Independence Day

Thursday 24th August was a significant day for our Ukrainian Community as they celebrated 32 years of Ukrainian Independence from the Soviet Union since 1991. Traditionally Ukrainians celebrate this day by coming together with their families to have a picnic. IRD Duhallow was delighted to organise a Ukrainian Family Fun Day in Millstreet Town Park. The event started with the Ukrainian National Anthem being sung by all present followed by a minute’s silence. For many Ukrainians, coming to Ireland was their second experience of fleeing war and emotions were high as they all remembered their loved ones still fighting for independence at home. Despite this, it was a lovely day of celebration where the children enjoyed facepainting, a magician, and balloon making. A delicious BBQ was provided by Duhallow Community Food Services. Thanks to Millstreet Town Park for accommodating this event.
