his annual report is a reflection of what a caring and collaborative community can accomplish for mothers, babies, and families.
Passion and Compassion: When I started at Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition four years ago, I was full of ideals and ideas. Within those four short years, I have seen a generous community responding to the needs of the families of Indian River County. I can honestly say I am more inspired today then I was then. I am fueled by the hearts of the mothers and fathers who are struggling to be the parents they want to be, the funders and generous individuals that give of their time, talent and treasure, and each of the approximately 1200 babies that are born each year.
Innovation: As the only model of its kind in the state, our Community Doula program has gained statewide attention for its impact on birth outcomes. We have completed our second full year of our Babies & Beyond program, which reaches 95% new mothers and babies. Also, in 2019, we completed the first year of our Nurse-Family Partnership program. These programs empower mothers to be the best parent they can be from day one. This includes prenatal, childbirth, and nutritional education, support during birth, one on one breastfeeding support, and an RN home visit for every mother. Finally, and most importantly, in 2018, we had the lowest infant mortality rate that Indian River County has seen in over thirty years. The outcomes are clear; this is working.
