CEO’s Note What a night the iDEA awards 2017 turned out to be; An evening where celebration, recognition and adulation took centerstage as we feted the country’s best developers and developments that have changed the way Malaysia experiences property. Throughout the evening, we saw the best property developers and developments in Malaysia get recognised not just for the work they do, but for the ideas and innovation they bring to the property industry in Malaysia. To be judged the best in a highly competitive industry by a jury of your peers is no mean feat. To have done it, with the quality and caliber on offer under the watchful gaze of our balloting partner, PwC is a remarkable achievement. That night, iDEA also celebrated people; Ordinary men and women who have done extraordinary things to break new ground and raise the standards for the property industry in Malaysia. It is because of these often unsung heroes and heroines, Malaysia has been voted the best place to buy a property. For me, it was heartwarming to see camaraderie reign over competition, as fierce competitors set aside commercial rivalry (albeit for a couple of hours) to celebrate each other’s achievements in the company of their peers. The success of iDEA also tell me how far we’ve come and how much we’ve achieved, collectively. iDEA certainly cemented its position as the creme de la creme event for property developers and developments in Malaysia. We have all of you to thank.

iProperty Development Excellence Awards (iDEA) 2017 The iProperty Development Excellence Awards (iDEA) organized by Malaysia’s No. 1 property site, iProperty.com Malaysia, aims to uplift the real estate industry standards by recognizing the cream of the crop, i.e revolutionary developments, developers and individuals who have redefined Malaysia’s property landscape. iProperty.com Malaysia engaged the expertise of an advisory panel formed by 4 real estate professionals to set the judging criteria and awards concept.

A separate panel of 8 judges, consisting of independent experts in various fields related to the property industry, were then invited to evaluate the merits of all 74 submissions in the first 13 development categories on 26th September 2016. The judging criteria included marketing initiatives, value creation, innovation, concepts, sustainability and many more. These 13 winners then went through another round of judging on the same day, to select the winner of the “Development of the Year” award. This judging process was witnessed and results independently verified by a team from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Malaysia. Meanwhile, the consumer voting campaign for the “People’s Choice Award” was held from 16th to 30th October 2017, for which the top 5 developers with the most votes were selected as winners. Winners and finalists were recognised for their best efforts in brand building and project marketing efforts. This vote counts were also verified by PwC Malaysia. In addition to the 15 iDEA award categories, iProperty.com Malaysia also presented 3 special awards to organisations/individuals that have made significant contributions to the real estate industry – these include The Ingenious Design Award, The Progressive Developer Award and Innovative Leader of the Year.

3 PANEL OF ADVISORY

Ezumi is an active member of Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), elected as council member of PAM in 2009, appointed as a member of Council of Architecture Accreditation and Education Malaysia in 2010 and appointed as a board member of the Board of Architects Malaysia in 2013. Ezumi began his career in a small practice in Penang in 1994 before joining Arkitek MAA Sdn.Bhd. in 1997. He led the implementation of several projects, mainly hospitals, hotels and office buildings. His unique exposure in various aspects of design and project implementation had been an added advantage in his day-to-day response to clients’ needs. He was promoted as associate in 2002 and appointed as Director in 2006.

AR EZUMI

Datuk Tan Pei Ing is the founder and principal of PI Architect, a Kuala Lumpur firm that has received accolades for projects including Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya and Le Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. She consulted with the ABP during the construction of the award-winning Melbourne School of Design building.

DATUK TAN PEI ING

Datuk Tan is a former President of Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the first female to be appointed to the role in its 90-year history, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. She has founded several charitable initiatives including the Malaysian chapter of Architecture for Humanity and the Architects Meet the Public forum. Earlier this year, she was conferred the title of Datuk, the Malaysian government’s highest honour, in recognition of her significant contribution to improving the nation’s built environment. She was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award at the 2016 Malaysia Australia Alumni Council Awards in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. James Tee is the author of the best-selling book Malaysian Real Estate Industry – Value Creation Strategies. He was formerly the Executive Director of UOA Holdings, an award-winning Top 10 largest property group in Malaysia. Dr. Tee, who was a Board Member of UOA Asset Management, previously worked for the Hong Leong Group as Chief Executive Officer and the Setia Awan Group as Chief Executive Officer. Prior to that, he worked with Kurnia Asia Berhad as Group Chief Operating Officer and with McKinsey & Company as a Senior Associate based in ASEAN and the USA.

DR JAMES TEE

Dr. Tee holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge. A Commonwealth Scholar, he also has a First Class Honours Degree in Bachelor of Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor. Dr. Tee served as the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian REIT Managers Association (MRMA) from 2011 to 2015, and has been a member of the Young Presidents’ Organisation (YPO) since 2011.

Ar Sarly Andre Sarkum is an architecture futurist, sustainability proponent and design activist. Currently he helms the hybrid architectural design firm [SA]2 or Sarly Adre Sarkum Architecture Sdn. Bhd., which combines cutting edge architectural design solutions with extensive researchbased explorative approach to solve challenging integrated design problems.

Sarly is the current President of the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) – which is Malaysia’s Green Building Council under the auspices of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), as well as an elected Council Member of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (The Malaysian Institute of Architects); and also sits as one of the five directors of the Green Building Index (GBI) Green Rating Tool.

Ar Alice Leong Pek Lian is a Manager at Arkitek MAA Sdn. Bhd. She is a professional Architect, a qualified GBI Facilitator and currently the Honorary Secretary of Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM). She is also the Past Honorary Secretary of MGBC and a member of MIID. Ar Alice Leong graduated from University Science of Malaysia with a Bachelor Science HBP (Hons.) Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture.

Ar Alice Leong has been practising for 14 years as an Architect and is actively involved in creating green and sustainable designs and living spaces. She has vast experience with various type of buildings such as housing projects, as well as high rise commercial buildings, mix-developments etc.

Daniel Ho, a pioneering entrepreneur, author and public speaker, is the Group Managing Director of IQI and its group of companies. He is responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of group-wide strategies covering products, sales, marketing and development to ensure that the company stays at the forefront of the industry. With his detailed global and regional expertise in real estate, Mr Ho is on the advisory board of a number of publicly listed developers to provide services around concepts and commercialization strategies for new developments. With his wide experience in the industry, financial markets and partnerships, Mr Ho also play a pivotal role in establishing joint ventures and fund syndication for new property developments.

DANIEL HO Group Managing Director, IQI Holdings Bhd

Mr. Ho has over 20 years of experience in the Malaysian corporate and business sector, having previously been a key member of the funding and fundraising board that established a multimilliondollar oleochemical plant in Malaysia, as well as in pioneering the multinational French firm, Legrand’s first foray and successful venture into the Malaysian market, in his early twenties.

Ir Ahmad Izdihar is the President of Malaysia Green Building Confederation for the 2016-2018 term. He is also an invited lecturer, speaker and examiner for Green Building Index. Ir Ahmad Izdihar is a registered professional mechanical engineer with 20 years’ experience as a consultant in the building industry. He is the managing director of Exergy Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., an environmental sustainability design consultancy based in Kuala Lumpur. He is also a registered Green Building Index Facilitator.

IR AHMAD IZDIHAR SUPAAT President, MGBC

Ir Ahmad Izdihar holds a BSc Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York. He has extensive experience in the design of building services, with a concentration on ACMV system. He is also currently facilitating sustainable designs for various buildings in Malaysia.

Matthew Gaal is an Associate Principal and Director of Development for Southeast Asia. He is a registered architect with extensive experience, ranging from concept design through to completion on site. Specialising in the management of large-scale, complex projects, he has been involved at a senior level on numerous high profile buildings around the world. Having worked in the United States, Malaysia, Europe, the Middle East and Australia, Matthew brings an international perspective to the projects he works on. Known for his strong leadership and design development skills, Matthew places an emphasis on achieving group established goals and design resolutions.

MATTHEW GAAL Director of Development South East Asia, Woods Bagot

Matthew also holds the position of KL City Representative for the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, continuing to be involved with tower design within the Woods Bagot Global Studio. Spending time on projects around the world, Matthew’s tall building experience is regularly sought by his peers.

Matthias Loui has over 28 years of experience in real estate valuation services, property development and property management. His expertise includes marketing, leasing and management of prime properties in high rise commercial buildings and high-end gated residential developments.

Dr Foo Chee Hung is a researcher from the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM); a research arm under the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB). He is currently the Head of Consultancy and Technical Opinion Unit.

He obtained both an Environmental Engineering and Masters SHE Engineering degree from the University of Malaya. He then pursued his PhD in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the GreenRE Manager, and the MyCREST Qualified Profession.

Ir Kok Yen-Kwan is a practising professional electrical engineer with more than 13 years of experience in the building construction industry. He is currently the Head of Sustainability in an Energy and Green Building firm. Professionally, he is a BEM-registered Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer (with ECUK), REEM (with Energy Commission of Malaysia) and GBI Facilitator (with GBI Sdn. Bhd.).

Kok Yen-Kwan served as a 5-term board member of the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) from 2012 – 2017 and has been on the panel of assessors of the Green Pages Malaysia (GPM) Directory for all four editions published thus far. Yen-Kwan also sits on the Panel of Judges for the Eco Product & Eco Booth Design Awards at the annual ARCHIDEX, jointly organised by Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) & C.I.S. Network Sdn. Bhd.; and whom currently chairs the Green Energy Technology (GET) Committee, as well as being a council member of TEEAM.

Adrian Wee has coached more than 3000 investors in less than two years all across Asia, in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, China and Indonesia. He lives and breathes building net worth for the masses and his investor’s communities. Adrian Wee is a serial property entrepreneur, international speaker, business mentor and author of the best-selling book “Die with Massive Debts”. Over the past 17 years, amassing a multi-million-dollar property portfolio and in owning a successful interior design business, he has ID Renovated more than 1,000 properties; specializing in high-end show houses and prominent developers’ sales galleries.

ADRIAN WEE Founder, ID King
