n the life cycle of a coated object, there are many situations that could impair a perfect surface: Frequently, even before the object has been delivered or put to use (Fig. 1). Therefore, it is hardly surprising that coating companies and end customers desire increased surface safety and protection (Ref. opening photo). Scratches in the coating impair both appearance and function. A scratch on the surface is not only a cosmetic fault but often has profound consequences: A scratch that penetrates too far into the coating can lead, indeed, to a technical defect. The coating surface thereby loses its protective function and is subject to environmental influences.

ella vita utile di un manufatto verniciato, si possono verificare molte situazioni che ne compromettono la perfezione della superficie: spesso, persino prima che il prodotto sia stato consegnato e utilizzato (fig. 1). Per questo motivo non è una sorpresa se i verniciatori e i clienti finali desiderano una maggiore protezione e sicurezza superficiale (rif. foto d’apertura). I graffi sul rivestimento compromettono sia l’aspetto sia la funzionalità. Un graffio superficiale non rappresenta soltanto un danno cosmetico ma ha spesso conseguenze più profonde: un graffio che penetra troppo nel rivestimento può portare, infatti, a un difetto tecnico. La superficie verniciata perde quindi la sua funzione protettiva ed è soggetta alle influenze ambientali.
