ong ago, the mechanical preparation of surfaces was called simply “sandblasting”. The abrasive material used and projected was metal powder coming from foundry waste material. This term included all those machines, automatic or manual, used for the removal of casting burrs, calamine, oxide layers and so on in order to create a surface structure enabling a specific surface effect or, simply, the correct adhesion of the coating to the metal substrate. Nowadays, the term “sandblaster” is still used – primarily by the long-established players in the industry – but it refers to completely different systems and products. Rotary table, wire mesh belt, overhead rail, roller conveyor and rubber band shot peening and shotblasting machines are the new terms that refer to these modern systems, used with media of different materials: metal (from stainless steel to cast iron or aluminium), glass, ceramic, plastics up to the ones made in natural materials, such as corn cobs or walnut kernels. In the automotive sector, shotblasting is an essential treatment for several components: engine blocks, cylinder heads, transmission gears, axles and crankshafts, brake pads, springs, blades and turbines, and so on.

a preparazione meccanica delle superfici tempo fa era chiamata semplicemente “sabbiatura”. In effetti, il materiale abrasivo utilizzato e proiettato sulle superfici da pulire era sabbia metallica derivata da scarti di fonderia. Questo termine comprendeva tutte quelle macchine, automatiche o manuali, utilizzate per l’asportazione dei bave di fusione, delle calamine, degli strati di ossido e così via per creare una struttura superficiale del manufatto in grado di permettere un effetto specifico della superficie o, semplicemente, la corretta adesione della vernice sul substrato metallico. Oggi il termine “sabbiatrice” è ancora utilizzato soprattutto dai player storici del settore ma si riferisce a macchine e prodotti completamente diversi. Pallinatrici (Shot Peening) e granigliatrici a tavola rotante, a tappeto, a carico sospeso, con trasportatore a rulli o a nastro sono i nuovi termini che si riferiscono alle moderne macchine e che proiettano graniglie realizzate in diversi materiali: metallici, (dall’acciaio inossidabile alla ghisa all’alluminio), vetro, ceramica, materiale plastico fino alle graniglie realizzate con prodotti vegetali come ad esempio, il mais o i noccioli di noce.
