Aside from the cave paintings, vitreous enamel can be considered the oldest technique used by mankind for decorating surfaces. The birthplace of this technique were Greece and the Mediterranean area, from Mycenae to Cyprus, between 1600 and 1300 b.C. [1]. Enamel knew a period of splendour and development up to the XIV century, then a decline until the Industrial Revolution, when this type of coating began to be used, not for aesthetic reasons but mainly for its excellent engineering properties, in the enamelling of containers and sheets of iron and steel (Fig. 1).
Escludendo i primi graffiti degli uomini delle caverne, lo smalto porcellanato può essere considerato la tecnica più antica utilizzata dall’uomo per decorare le superfici. Culla di questa tecnica fu la Grecia e il Mediterraneo, da Micene a Cipro, tra il 1600 e il 1300 a.C.[1] Lo smalto vide un periodo di sviluppo e di splendore fino al XIV secolo, per poi entrare in declino. Con la rivoluzione industriale si iniziò ad utilizzare questo tipo di rivestimento, non per motivi estetici ma prevalentemente per le sue ottime proprietà ingegneristiche, nella smaltatura di recipienti e lamiere di ferro e d’acciaio.
