lobal coatings company Hempel announced that it is investing in a new research and development centre focused solely on passive fire protection coatings. Located just outside Barcelona in Spain, the centre is due to open towards the end of 2018 (Fig. 1). The investment demonstrates Hempel’s commitment to further developing its range of life-saving fire protection coatings as well as expanding its unique global R&D network. Passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are increasingly important in the construction and oil and gas industries. Applied to structural steel in large buildings and industrial oil and gas installations, the coatings expand to form an insulating layer of carbon char when exposed to high temperatures. This enables the steel to maintain its load-bearing capacity for up to four hours longer during a fire, giving people valuable time to escape the building and for fire fighters to put the fire out. Hempel is a leading manufacturer of PFP products. Its existing range of PFP coatings for cellulosic fires, Hempacore, includes both 12

Situato appena fuori Barcellona, in Spagna, il centro aprirà verso la fine del 2018 (fig. 1). L’investimento dimostra l’impegno di Hempel sia a sviluppare ulteriormente la propria gamma di rivestimenti per la protezione dal fuoco sia a espandere la propria rete globale di R&S. I rivestimenti di protezione passiva dal fuoco (PFP, Passive Fire Protection) sono sempre più importanti nel settore delle costruzioni e nell’industria Oil&Gas. Applicati all’acciaio strutturale in grandi edifici e impianti industriali Oil&Gas, i rivestimenti si espandono per formare uno strato isolante di carbonio quando sono esposti a temperature elevate. Ciò consente all’acciaio di mantenere la capacità portante fino a quattro ore in più durante un incendio, dando tempo prezioso alle persone per fuggire dall’edificio e ai vigili del fuoco per spegnere l’incendio. Hempel è un produttore leader di rivestimenti PFP. La sua gamma di prodotti PFP esistenti per gli incendi cellulosici, Hempacore, comprende sia versioni a rapida essiccazione che a base acqua, ed è stata utilizzata su
