Why, Jesus”

Dear IPC Friends,

If we were given the opportunity to ask any question we could and have it answered, I suspect that most of us would ask a “Why?” question. There are just so many things that we don’t understand, and we want to know the reason for them. History has demonstrated that human beings can endure just about anything if they can maintain a sense of purpose in the midst of it, if they can find some reason for continuing on. Conversely, one of our greatest frustrations in life is when we cannot find a reason why, especially when we experience something painful like an injustice, a disease, a job loss, or the death of a loved one. And much of the time, we ask this question of God, wishing like Job that God would give us an answer explaining the mystery of God’s activity in our lives.

Of course, this is nothing new. If you read through the Old Testament, the Israelites often asked why God was doing or not doing something. And when God showed up in the flesh in the person of Jesus, the religious leaders had all kinds of questions about why Jesus was doing what he was doing. In the second chapter of Mark, we find four vignettes where people wondered why Jesus and his disciples were saying or doing certain things. After Jesus told a lame man that his sins were forgiven, the scribes asked, “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy!” When Jesus ate dinner with socially unacceptable people, they asked, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus’ disciples were not following the fasting rules, people asked, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And when the disciples plucked the heads of grain to eat as they walked through a field, the Pharisees asked, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” People were always asking Jesus “Why?” I suspect that many of us are as well.

Beginning on Sunday, August 13, our Back to School Kick-Off, I am going to preach through the second chapter of Mark and take a look at each of these four stories as we all wonder together, “Why, Jesus?” After that, we will spend a few weeks looking at the exciting days of the early church in the opening chapters of the book of Acts. I hope you will join us in worship as we explore these fascinating passages of scripture together this fall.

The Children’s Fresh Air Farm Centennial

Our year-long celebration of the Children’s Fresh Air Farm Centennial will culminate with a weekend of events at the Farm October 28 and 29.

On Saturday, October 28, former staff and campers are invited back to the Farm from 11 am -2 pm to visit with one another, reminisce about camp, and enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds. Please help us spread the word about this reunion who do you know that needs to be there?

On Sunday afternoon, October 29, starting at 3 pm, we will have a church-wide celebration that will also serve as this year’s Fall Festival! There will be fun and games for the whole family, live music from the Table worship band, and a special dedication in thanksgiving for 100 consecutive years of IPC’s mission in Bluff Park! Dinner will be served at 5 pm. Come out for a fun afternoon of fellowship and to see the newly renovated garden space and our wonderful Clinton Taylor Aquatic Center.

On behalf of the Children’s Fresh Air Farm Subcommittee, I want to thank our church for your incredible financial support to bring the dream of building a new poolhouse to reality.

Please bring your whole family to celebrate the Farm’s 100th Year; it’s going to be super fun!

DISCERNING OUR WAY FORWARD

Thanks to the generosity of IPC members in 2020 and 2021, there were budget surpluses, and Session directed the use of $527,000 of the funds to support Community Ministries’ priorities and special needs. Session established the Community Ministries Discernment Committee, which met most of 2022 to determine the focus (children in need in greater Birmingham) and specific use of the funds.

The following update highlights the progress of the four projects.

SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM SERVICES--OUR FIRST YEAR WITH YOUTH INTERNS

Each summer, just over 100 students in rising second to eighth grade enjoy IPC’s Summer Learning Program (SLP) full of academics, fun, enrichment opportunities, and field trips. This summer, six alumni were hired as our first-ever SLP Youth Interns. Their internship is funded through a Discernment Committee Grant to the Children’s Fresh Air Farm (CFAF) and the SLP.

This class of rising sophomores has known each other for many years and was thrilled to return to the SLP in a new role. Before this year’s program began, Evonte made it a goal to become a certified lifeguard and has proven himself to be an excellent one.

What’s interesting to know is that the intern class is responsible for the addition of grades to SLP due to their love for and investment in the CFAF. Their persistent request to return paid off, and they have shown maturity, dependability, and eagerness to help and learn. They serve as exemplary role models in the classroom, gym, and pool, and the younger campers admire them. This year's eighth graders aspire to follow in their footsteps as soon as possible.

MEET THIS SUMMER’S INTERNS

Evonte, who served as a Lifeguard

“I went here when I was younger, and they helped me succeed so I’m glad I get to give back this summer as a Youth Intern!”

Michael, who assisted teachers in the fourth-grade classroom with tasks, small groups math games, and reading “You can be yourself, have fun, and don’t have to worry about violence or any harm towards you.”

Marcus, who assisted Coach T during gym class, kept coolers filled, cleaned up gym, and helped get snacks to every classroom while going to his football practice before starting the day at SLP and taking an Algebra class at the end of the day “I was here from second grade to eighth grade, so I’ve been on both sides now. I like working with Coach T.”

Xavion, who helped Marcus assist Coach T during gym class, keep coolers filled, clean up gym, and serve snacks

“I like helping kids out and I try to be a good role model and leader. And I have fun working with them, too.”

Treasure, who assisted the teachers in the second-grade classrooms with tasks, small group math games, and reading “I have been at the camp since my fifth-grade year. My years at camp have been amazing! I love the program it has for the students. This camp is honestly an amazing place, and I love it.”

Ariyana, who assisted the teachers in the third-grade classrooms with tasks, small group math games, and reading “I really enjoy the whole thing/ bus rides to working with children in classrooms, seeing how they grow academically. I enjoy working with my former classmates too. They make the job better too. And just watching the children become great human beings too.”

MOBILITY MENTORING AT I3 ACADEMY

Melissa Self Patrick, Evelyn Puckett and I recently visited i3 Academy for an update on Mobility Mentoring. We met with Dr. Tommy Bice and the new coordinator, Ebone Kimber. Ebone brings to this position a social work background, as well as many community connections.

They recently traveled to Boston for training with EMPath (Economic Mobility Pathways), a nonprofit that improves the lives of people living in poverty.

Ebone has identified 12 families that began the coaching program on the first day of school on July 27, with the intention of adding 12 additional families per year. The families will partner with volunteers to develop a plan and connect them to various resources in the community.

The goal is to support these families as they build skills and get them to a place where they are no longer struggling.

FAMILY WRAPAROUND SUPPORT SERVICES

For many years the Community Ministries Department has supported the families of STAIR, Lift Off, and Summer Learning Program students, especially with financial assistance to those who are in crisis situations.

Now, thanks to funding from the Discernment Committee, five families are participating in Family Wraparound Support Services, receiving assistance in support of their goals of self-sufficiency. Four of the participants are parents of current students in the Summer Learning Program; the fifth is a former neighbor and visitor to The Table.

Three of the participants are in medical-related programs at local colleges. Another participant graduated from Hope Inspired Ministries, and the fifth trained in HVAC at the Construction Education Foundation of Alabama. Of the two who have graduated, both quickly found full-time employment. Two of the students are preparing for certification exams, while the remaining student continues classes and clinicals.

Along the path to self-sufficiency, the participants were in school and studying. The single mothers and single man were able to work only a few hours each week, and in one case, not able to work at all. By assisting with rent, utility bills, and transportation issues, IPC is providing a bridge to a more successful future. We look forward to providing more happy updates.

COMMUNITY CONNECTOR AT HAYES K-8 SCHOOL

Daphne Huff began her work as the Community Connector at Hayes K-8 School in early April.

Discernment Committee members were part of the interview process and were impressed with her decades of teaching experience and her enthusiasm to connect Hayes parents and children with various resources and strengthen community partners' support to benefit

families. She is employed by Birmingham Education Foundation to be on-site at Hayes as part of their Education Innovation Initiative.

To date, Ms. Huff has successfully established a PTA at Hayes K-8 and also spent time assisting at our Summer Learning Program.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF LOCAL CHILDREN

MINISTRY AT IPC: CALLED TO CONNECT

As summer transitions into fall, what a season we are enjoying here at IPC—filled with ministry happening in many places throughout our wonderful congregation.

We hope you will find an opportunity to connect with us in the coming months. Read along for updates from our church leaders in ministry.

ADULT MINISTRIES

Autumn is a time to open doors, reunite the family of faith, and nestle into our church home. Adult Ministries (which includes Adult Education, the Library, and many small groups) is tasked to oversee adult engagement opportunities—learning with a Sunday School class, experiencing God’s call in an interest group, quietly studying in the library, and venturing into large intergenerational gatherings.

We have a new Small Group Subcommittee to help us become more intentional and responsive to IPC adults where they gather, grow in faith, and

minister to one another and our neighbors. Please contact Adult Ministries to let us know what you need to experience warm and welcoming grace at IPC and beyond.

FAMILY MINISTRIES

Summer is always a special season for families at IPC, and over the dog days of summer, we hope you were able to relax, spend time with others, explore, and learn something new. Children in VBS learned how to be “Game Changers” while campers at Bibletimes Marketplace joined the biblical tribes of Israel to learn about Jacob’s story.

The Youth reflected on what it means to experience deep, authentic joy while in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. The IPC Day School welcomed over 120 children during their six weeks of themed APPLE camps like camping, island adventure, and busy builders.

In May, we welcomed Dr. Jonathan Davis and Dr. Dale Wisely to IPC as our guest speakers for our first-ever “Parentpalooza,” which shared tips and support

for the parents of the church. Families also joined us to celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Day with flowers and sweet treats.

Mark your calendars for a special “Summer Supper Soirée” for all IPC parents on August 23 at Clubhouse on Highland.

As we prepare to kick off the school year on Sunday, August 13, Family Ministry wants to express our excitement for the coming season. We really can’t wait to see what the Holy Spirit has in store this fall!

YOUTH MINISTRIES

Summer was filled with opportunities for our youth to grow and connect with each other, the community, and their faith.

This summer, youth served at BTMP and in Camden, spent time in fellowship during Tuesday night patio nights, and deepened our faith at the Montreat Youth and Middle School Conference. I spent time, as Youth Elder, working with our subcommittee to plan events, approve curriculums, and discuss changes that will better foster fellowship, service, and development of faith.

MEMBERS, FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS OF IPC ENJOYED TACOS, TRIVIA, AND FELLOWSHIP AT CARRIGAN’S BEER GARDEN DURING IPC CONNECT’S SUMMER EVENT. IPC YOUTH AT THIS SUMMER'S MONTREAT YOUTH CONFERENCE IN NORTH CAROLINA.

This fall, Youth group will continue to meet on Sunday nights and will focus on our call to care for Creation. We are excited to introduce “First Wednesday Fellowship,” which is a time once a month for our youth to deepen their relationships with one another through fun activities, games, and meals together.

All ninth and tenth graders are invited to participate in confirmation, a significant milestone in their faith. Select eleventh and twelfth graders will be chosen to participate on the Youth Grant Team, where they will learn about the IPC Foundation through reviewing grants, performing site visits, and conversing meaningfully to allocate funds.

We are looking forward to this fall and can’t wait to continue to grow, learn, and worship together.

CHILDREN MINISTRIES

Wow! It’s hard to believe we are getting into the Fall season and school getting back in session! We’ve had an amazing summer with our IPC Children’s Ministry programs.

Thanks to our incredible volunteers and committee members for making VBS and Bibletimes Marketplace a huge success with over 140 children participating. We have a fantastic line up this fall that your kids will not want to miss out on.

Personally, I’m excited about Kids Rock from 5:30–7:30 pm on Wednesday nights. It will give our children a chance to gain a deeper connection with their church family and intentional time experiencing God’s Word all while having fun!

M4 is another incredible way for our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to connect with each other through service every third Sunday of the month.

I am loving all of the opportunities to connect our children together in Christ and am looking forward to seeing all of your children this Fall.

IPC DAY SCHOOL

Greetings from the Day School Committee Chair! I’ve been involved with the Day School since 2013. I’ve witnessed the incredible impact the Day School has on the lives of children. Here are some exciting highlights for fall.

The Day School continues to connect students and their families to our church through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and weekly chapel services. We have seen families new to the Day School visiting the church on Sundays and several families have joined IPC in the last year. Home for Faith, a monthly Bible study for

moms, continues to grow each year.

Day School families support Community Ministries as one of the largest donors of the Harvest for Hunger food drive. Students visit the Food Pantry to see where their donations go as we build the concepts of giving and sharing with others.

This year we will be adding a curriculum to build phonemic awareness for our 4- and 5-year-olds, thanks to funds we received from the William W. Featheringill Fund. We are also eagerly exploring options for the much-needed playground renovation. We’d love to have you come visit the Day School!

EXPERIENCE THE TABLE THIS FALL

“The Table Service is an inviting space to all. IPC members, neighbors, and visitors can worship with us regardless of where they are on their faith journey. The casual dress and music can be a great choice for those who enjoy a more relaxed style. It’s also a great opportunity for people who work or travel on the weekend to get to church.

With weekly Communion by Intinction and Prayers of the People, along with modern cool song arrangements, and thoughtful sermons, The Table has a very inclusive feel that has attracted a dedicated community of followers."

At IPC, The Table worship service offers a one-of-akind musical experience featuring talented musicians from different parts of Birmingham. Their individual styles are blended to create a unique sound that is a pleasure to listen to. Our music selection includes both hymns and modern contemporary pieces, resulting in an eclectic mix. Each week, we showcase a variety of instruments such as guitar, piano, pedal steel, violin, and trumpet.

The Table is a space where you can come as you are. We want participants to

feel comfortable worshiping with children around, and it’s common to hear a random “amen” from the crowd. The sermon carries over from the morning worship services, with music as the medium that brings all aspects of the Table service together. There is time for reflection and prayer, and we strive to provide a musical atmosphere that is able to help facilitate an experience that brings you closer to God and a connection with others.

WORSHIP WITH US ON SUNDAY EVENINGS

All are invited to the Table. We’ll be in Highland Hall each Sunday at 5 pm.

“The time and casual style (e.g., coffee, cookies, and children coloring at their parent’s feet) make for a wonderful atmosphere for all ages. It is especially nice for children, people who are just returning from active afternoons and/or neighborhood visitors who may be intimidated by the formality of the morning services.

With traditional liturgy so familiar to our members, the service incorporates music that is lively and spiritually energizing. The name, Table, exemplifies our core value of a welcoming community for any and all who will come and worship. Everyone is welcome!”

FALL 2023 Join a Grace Group

We hope to see you there! The 2023 Fall Grace Groups will explore the intriguing and sometimes perplexing Book of Revelation. Using Breaking the Code: Understanding the Book of Revelation by Bruce M. Metzger and revised by David A. DeSilva, each small group will delve into the rich symbolism of this important biblical text.

The John N. Lukens Library is located beside the elevator on the same level as the Great Hall. It is open and available for use whenever the church is open. The collection has books in a variety of subjects, including study of the Bible and Christianity, devotional literature, family life, music, the arts, biography, and fiction for all ages.

Just inside the entrance are display shelves containing books relating to current Church School classes, general Bible study, the history of IPC, seasonal books, and new books.

A few of the books now on display are The Bible Makes Sense by Walter Brueggeman; A Short World History of Christianity by Robert Bruce Mullin; Surprised by Scripture by N.T. Wright; Short Stories by Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine, and A Family Treasury of Bible Stories told by Roberto Brunelli.

The library uses a self-service check out system with step-by-step instructions on the bulletin board above the card catalog. Books may be kept for four weeks. If you have questions about the library, please contact the librarian at ginni.robertson@gmail.com.

Grace Groups offer an opportunity for spiritual growth and inner community connection, reminding us that you don’t have to go at it alone. Over the course of six weeks, members and friends of IPC will gather at various times and locations throughout the week, so there is a group for everyone. And if you can't find a suitable group, you even have the option to start your own.

Registration opens on Sunday, September 17

Groups will meet beginning the week of Sunday, October 8, through the week of Sunday, November 12. We encourage you to invite your friends in the community to connect with an IPC Grace Group as we explore the fascinating symbolism and deepen our understanding of God's message together.
