Scholarship Bonds/Notes IWC Newsom Archives Raymond J. Chadwick Library Iowa Wesleyan College Mount Pleasant, Iowa

Facts  The scholarship bond idea was to gain funds for the college. It actually created

financial challenges for the University. When invested in the college and signed a contract, they then received free tuition.  “One Scholar at a time, male or female, may be kept forever, free from Tuition

Fees, in any of the Classes of the Academical[sic] or Literary Departments of the University, in such studies as are, or may be essential to graduation.”

 These notes/bonds could be passed down through the purchasers children.  “Should the purchaser die intestate, then the right of personal tuition shall

descend to any or all of his or her children, who may claim such tuition, one at a time in succession.”

Facts  The price of bonds was set at $100.

 A $100 bond purchased in 1855 would cost $2464.20 in 2013. Tuition would have been

approximately $35-40 per term for the preparatory or collegiate departments. Students enrolled in music or drawing classes would have extra fees. (Source: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/)

 A $100 bond purchased in 1860 would cost $2556.27 in 2013. Tuition would have been

approximately $26-43 per term for the preparatory or collegiate departments. Students enrolled in music or drawing classes would have extra fees. (Source: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/)

 A $100 bond purchased in 1865 would cost $1500.87 in 2013. Tuition would have been

approximately $45-73 per term for the preparatory or collegiate departments. Students enrolled in music, drawing, or language classes would have extra fees. (Source: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/)

Facts  Purchasers had to sign a contract and immediately respond my mail to let to

President of the University that they had received the bond.

 Contracts stated specific guidelines the purchaser had to follow.

 Our collection reflects scholarships from 1854 to 1866.

 In our collection we have five bonds from Henry Avery, a board of trustee

member, it is noted on one of the bonds that it was paid in apple trees.

 Located with some of the scholarship bonds, were land deeds.
