Reasons for Giving Thanks

“I know that my education was made possible because of others that had made gifts to the university before me. I wanted to be part of that and carry on the tradition. I began giving annually to Iowa Wesleyan the first year after I graduated. I later joined the Legacy Society by naming Iowa Wesleyan University in my estate plan so that I could play a role in helping with the sustainability of the institution and assist with the education of future generations.” - Tony Burton ‘88

A Message from the President It has been such an honor to serve this remarkable university and to have an opportunity to engage with important stakeholders, like you, as Iowa Wesleyan University enters a new era – an era of planning and prosperity. A number of initiatives have been imagined and implemented and the results have been remarkable. The fall of 2015 first-year enrollment increased 62 percent from the year prior making this one of the largest incoming classes in over two decades. Additionally, in 2016 we nearly doubled that number again, making our fall 2016 incoming class the largest in four decades. Iowa Wesleyan continues to earn top-tier rankings as a Best Regional University in the Midwest in U.S. News and World Report, as well as a top 100 Best Baccalaureate College by Washington Monthly, ranking Iowa Wesleyan as 5th in the nation in service and 2nd in the nation for its Community Service Ranking. We continue to share this great news with you, our greatest supporters, because you make a significant difference in the success of this excellent institution. Your confidence in the institution speaks volumes, and I want to thank you wholeheartedly for your investment in Iowa Wesleyan’s future. Last year we launched the strategic plan, Wesleyan 2020 | Igniting Our Passions. This plan includes 4 strategic themes, 13 goals and 37 initiatives, I am pleased to report that we successfully achieved 14 initiatives in the first year and we are on track to accomplish an additional 15 initiatives in the current year. Consequently, we are ahead of schedule and expect to successfully execute the five year plan earlier than expected. As you can sense the momentum for the university is strong and we have you to thank, our alumni, friends and donors, for your continued support. In addition, this year we celebrate the university’s 175th anniversary. We will be celebrating this extraordinary milestone on April 22, 2017 with the Purple & White Ball. Please join us for an unforgettable evening in honor of this extraordinary university. We could not have achieved these benchmarks without your support. You are investing in our students’ future and your gifts provide the inspiration and empowerment they need to build on their futures. Your investment is a powerful way to show that you believe in the mission and future of Iowa Wesleyan University. Your support is vital and appreciated, and it will have an immediate and lasting impact. May you be blessed beyond measure in the year to come. Peace,

Steven E. Titus, President

A Message from the Board Chair As chairman of the Iowa Wesleyan University Board of Trustees, I have the distinct pleasure once again this year of acknowledging the support of Iowa Wesleyan donors. On behalf of the board, let me extend my sincere appreciation for your investment in this fine institution. The Philanthropy Report is a public way to say thank you to the many friends, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and others who have made a commitment to the future of Iowa Wesleyan University. Since transforming into a university, our brand continues to be stronger in the region. Our strategic plan is moving swiftly through the transformation of a University with a strong future as we navigate the years ahead. It is vitally important for you, our loyal donors, to know how important you are to this process. We see the road ahead quite clearly, and with your investment, we have the resources to continue our journey. Your gifts to this university serve as a vote of confidence in our mission and vision. I have the distinct honor of frequent interaction with our university community, and most importantly our students and I can share with you that this campus is full of aliveness, excitement and energy. The passion that our faculty and staff have for the work they do for and with our students is unparalleled. However, we couldn’t do the work we do without your support and I sincerely hope that we can continue to count on your generosity for years to come. Thank you so much. Sincerely,

Don C. Wiley, Chairman

Hills’ Secret to Staying Young The Hills family has a long legacy of involvement in education and community support. Helen Milligan Hills taught for several years at the secondary level, was instrumental in the Head Start Program and organized the first preschool play group in the Mount Pleasant Area. She also volunteered as a United Methodist Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Cub Scout Den Mother, Red Cross First Aid and Nutrition instructor and English as a Second Language instructor. Howard H. Hills worked as an insurance adjuster, agent and underwriter for Central States Insurance Company in Mount Pleasant. He served his community through First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, Boy Scouts and Mount Pleasant City Council. He was honored by Iowa Wesleyan by receiving the Alumni Service Award in 1977. Now, Jared and Carol Hills continue the family’s philanthropic efforts, and Iowa Wesleyan is a grateful beneficiary of their generosity. Jared’s connection to Iowa Wesleyan starts with his parents, both of whom are IW alumni. Jared’s mother, Helen earned her BA in 1929, graduating with majors in Home Economics and Education. His father, Howard received a BS from Iowa Wesleyan in 1930, with a major in Chemistry, and completed his graduate work in chemistry at Western Reserve University in Cleveland. But Jared has a more personal bond to Iowa Wesleyan, one formed by growing up at 704 N. Main and enjoying the IW campus as the neighborhood park. In a recent conversation between Hills and Iowa Wesleyan’s Director for Corporate and Foundation Relations, Jim Pedrick, Jared fondly recalled, “Nothing was locked, and we were in every nook and cranny, including the museum on the third floor of Old Main.” A favorite prank among the students was the requisition of the museum’s buffalo mount which, according to Jared, “frequently appeared on the District Superintendent’s front porch.” A place better known to us as Carl Moehlman’s house. In pursuit of an engineering degree, Jared sought higher education in Iowa City. After graduating from the University of Iowa along with the love of his life on August 13, 1959, he and Carol married just 10 days later. Upon returning from a 6

Jared and Carol Hills

short trip to the Black Hills, the newlyweds settled in Cedar Rapids to begin their life and careers together—Carol worked as a school nurse, and Jared accepted a job from Howard Divine, becoming Divine Engineering’s first full-time engineer. It wasn’t long before Jared and Carol’s family became the family that Howard Divine never had, and today Divine Engineering has become a family business for the Hills. Two of their three children, a son-in- law and even a grandson are currently employed by the company, with another grandson planning to join upon earning his degree next year. “We’ve been fortunate” Jared shared, explaining that Mr. Divine was good to him and made provisions so they could buy the business from his estate. “That’s been a blessing.”

IN RECOGNITION OF THE LIFE WORK AND SERVICE OF HOWARD H. AND HELEN MILLIGAN HILLS, JARED AND CAROL HILLS HAVE ESTABLISHED A FUND THAT WILL GENERATE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR IOWA WESLEYAN STUDENTS MAJORING IN ELEMENTARY OR EARLY-CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION OR THE SCIENCES. When asked what his parents would think about the scholarship in their names Jared replies, “Oh, they’d be pleased, especially Mother.” As Jim Pedrick finished his conversation with Jared, who is still engaged in the work he loves, Jared said “I have to drive to Decatur tonight, it’s choir practice night.” When Jim observed that he wouldn’t get home until midnight he replied “that’s my usual bedtime” as he started up his Lincoln Town Car with 150,000 miles on the odometer. Perhaps being a philanthropist is the true secret to youth. It certainly works well for Jared Hills. Visit www.iw.edu/giving. IOWA W E SLE YA N UNI V ERSIT Y PHIL A NTHROPY REPORT  | 2015-2016

“Giving is simple because the highest calling in life is helping those you don’t know so why not the students of IW? There are IW Alumni & Friends of the university who supported us through their gifts so we could earn our degrees and it’s now our turn to return the favor. Wesleyan cared about us as students and we care about Wesleyan as alumni thus a commitment to keep the tradition going is a simple choice.” - Warren ’74 and Jill Dolby ’74 Ludvigsen

A Gift for the Ages As Iowa Wesleyan University’s J. Raymond Chadwick Library surpasses 50 years of successfully serving our community, a generous bequest from dedicated IW benefactor, local historian, and steadfast supporter of Mount Pleasant enables us to continue pursuing our goals. The $385,617 gift entrusted to Chadwick Library by Donald E. Young ’50, has been carefully invested in improvements that support the Library’s mission and the strategic plan of the University, all the while commemorating the altruistic man who made it possible. Iowa Wesleyan’s Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, Paula Kinney explains, “This bequest has really allowed us to preserve the legacy of who Don Young is, and the essence of him as a person—what he believed in and his philosophy on life and education. So while he spent quite a bit of his life work educating students and preserving the history of the town, we are now able to take his legacy and pay it forward to continually offer those opportunities to another generation of students.”

Donald Young held a lifelong passion for history and education. He spent his entire career as an educator, and devoted his retirement years to preserving the history of Henry County, Iowa. He had a deep love of libraries, and early on made it his mission to make certain each of Mount Pleasant’s elementary schools had one of its own. Don also served for 24 years, on the Mount Pleasant Public Library Board. Young’s generosity and community devotion continues to make an impact, years after his unexpected passing on March 15, 2014. He left his property to the Henry County Health Center; bequeathed his private library, an extensive collection of books, papers, manuscripts, maps and documented slides of Iowa history, to the Henry County

8

Heritage Trust located in the former Saunders school building where he served as principal.

Not only did he contribute to the Chadwick Library, but he also awarded the Mount Pleasant Public Library a similar amount with a restriction for books. Additionally, Young left a donation for the Mount Pleasant Community School District, to be held in trust for purchasing books for the elementary school libraries. Young’s effect on the community can be witnessed nearly everywhere, as is aptly memorialized at the Mount Pleasant Public Library on a plaque that reads: Library Board Member, Educator, Historian, Community Pillar, Library Benefactor. Former IW Registrar (for nearly 35 years) and close, longtime friend of Donald Young, Edward Kropa said of him at the J.Raymond Chadwick Library dedication ceremony, “Throughout his life, Don was supportive of the communities he found himself a part of. Like a pillar, his support was essential and reliable. While my role as executor is over, I will observe with interest the results of Don’s thoughtful planning.” Iowa Wesleyan University celebrated Don Young’s tremendous contributions on September 30, 2016 with a ribbon cutting honoring him and the 50th Anniversary of the Chadwick Library.

New Trends in Giving For the past 175 years, Iowa Wesleyan has been able to achieve our mission, largely thanks to generous support provided by alumni, staff and friends of the University—all relationships we value deeply. As we enter A New Era at Iowa Wesleyan University, philanthropy, building and nurturing bonds take on greater importance. Competition among not-for-profits is getting incredibly fierce. In researching the latest trends in giving, there are a few key influencers to watch.

According to The Philanthropy Outlook 2016 & 2017, an in-depth study conducted by Marts & Lundy in collaboration with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the landscape of giving is experiencing a strong metamorphosis. However, the outlook is positive, as long as influencing factors continue as expected.

Technology is probably the most apparent catalyst for the transformation of philanthropy. The Internet has literally upended the ways people are choosing and supporting causes and opened fresh opportunities for nonprofits to reach a broader audience and nurture more relationships. Now, thanks to e-commerce capabilities and peer-to-peer fundraising platforms, individuals and organizations alike, can even set up online events to collect contributions. But this also means donors have many more options when it comes to making a difference, increasing demands for transparency and solid proof an organization is worthy of support.

As stories of controversy surrounding well-known charities and institutions of higher education continue to be a hot topic for discussion across news and social media venues, it is critical that we remain connected to our audience—perhaps the single largest influence on this new era of giving. Today, demography plays such a strong role for a number of reasons. An historic four generations are now part of our nation’s workforce. This requires more insightful development of messaging, as well as a complex strategy

IW.EDU

behind where and when to deliver it in order to resonate with such a diverse audience.

Add to this the fact that Millennials, our youngest generation now earning and donating, are passionate about backing organizations making a measurable social or environmental impact. They want to see it and experience it first-hand too, and this new expectation bodes well for Iowa Wesleyan and other higher learning institutions focused on changing lives for good.

Although there are many options when it comes to impact investing, there are few with which contributors are able to form such a deep connection as learning institutions; few that can influence a person’s ability to fully live up to his or her potential and simultaneously build lifelong friendships, and maybe even leave a legacy that affects future generations to come.

IOWA WESLEYAN REMAINS COMMITTED TO MAKING THE WORLD BETTER ONE LIFE AT A TIME, AND OUR LOYAL SUPPORTERS ARE CONFIRMATION THAT WE’RE DOING IT RIGHT. WE’VE KNOWN ALL ALONG THAT THE BEST GIFTS COME STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART, AND IT’S GRATIFYING THAT THIS IS THE LATEST TREND AMONG SO MANY PEOPLE. IT’S PRECISELY WHAT OUR WORLD NEEDS RIGHT NOW. Consider making an impact investment in Iowa Wesleyan, and join us in our endeavor to help future generations realize new possibilities.

A Spirit of Generosity The philanthropic passions of Iowa Wesleyan employees have been ignited through the annual Employee Giving Campaign. Since its inception in the spring of 2015, the Employee Giving Campaign, which is completely peer driven, has focused on inspiring support from within. As members of the Iowa Wesleyan community, employees know the impact that philanthropy has on the institution. They experience these impacts first hand as they educate, empower and inspire students to live meaningful lives and careers.

“You invest in something that is investing in you, whether it is educationally, professionally, or in other dimensions. You want to be able to contribute to its sustainability and growth and the kind of future it can really have,” shared Associate Professor of Nursing, Lisa Kongable ’86, a team leader for the Employee Giving Campaign.

Peers at the university echo Kongable’s devotion. Through the campaign, employees have shown their commitment to Iowa Wesleyan by answering the call to participate. Since 2015, employee giving has reached an astounding 91 percent.

At the core of each faculty and staff, there is a passion and dedication to the institution and most importantly the students. It this passion and dedication that creates the spirit of generosity that defines the Employee Giving Campaign and supports a culture of philanthropy at Iowa Wesleyan.

“I give to support what I believe in and I believe in Iowa Wesleyan University and the educational opportunities it offers to students to realize their dreams. I give because a liberal arts education is still a great opportunity for students to begin to broaden their horizons, realize their potential in the world, and think critically about the world around them. I give because it creates opportunities for everyone which can impact others—even those that we don’t know, in ways that we can’t imagine.” - Paula Kinney, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs

A Special Recipe for Revitalization What’s the best recipe to revitalize some tired spaces for Iowa Wesleyan’s student athletes? Take a generous gift from Joan Gerling ’64, who has been dedicated to helping improve students’ lives for years, establishing the Joan M. Gerling Endowed Scholarship for education majors; making a $25K matching grant during the 2015 Spring Campaign; and renovating the Iowa Wesleyan Chapel and residence halls.

Add another generous contribution from the estate of Iowa Wesleyan University Football Hall of Famer and 2008 IW Service Award recipient, Dave Mineart ’60—who was also a member of the Iowa Wesleyan Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1982-1988, then served as vice president from 1989-

1994, and as president from 1995-1998.

Mix in a huge pinch of materials and equipment left over from previous projects, and a large dash of items from local donors and vendors.

Then blend well with a strong helping of creative ingenuity and hard work from Iowa Wesleyan’s Physical Plant team. Bake at constant temperature throughout the summer.

The end result is newly opened space in storage areas and a beautiful facelift for the lower level of Old Gym, taking form through: Construction of an updated women’s restroom, along with a small locker room; addition of a coat of paint to brighten up the main gym area;

conversion of a top floor classroom into a full swing golf studio and two-hole putting green, enabling members of the golf team to stay in good form during the winter months; and the equipping of locker room spaces with new projectors and flat screen televisions, offering more space to review game film and another good hangout place for students. If you haven’t yet had an opportunity to experience this fresh environment, we invite you to come and see how our benevolent friends are helping Iowa Wesleyan continue to ignite new passions.

Bringing New Wonders to Iowa Wesleyan When Dorothy R. Peterson ’65 and Dolores (D.P.) Poulter Wilson aspired to bring fresh perspectives to Iowa Wesleyan’s science department, who could have guessed how their movement would impact the entire University?

It began with Peterson’s passion for science, and the wonders brought to light by the digital microscope in her home lab. Knowing how much students would benefit from having the same technology, it was easy to get Wilson on board, and together, they started an evolution.

The two Iowa Wesleyan loyalists made generous donations that were used as a match on a proposal to the Alliant Energy Foundation for a partial microscope replacement project, receiving a grant of $2,400. This grant and the women’s match were then used in a proposal for a complete microscope replacement project, winning a $4,395 grant from the HCHC Foundation.

It was at this point that everything began to advance dramatically. With a small grant from Orscheln Industries Foundation and funds from the Donald Young Estate in addition to University budgeted salaries for OASIS, a $343,010 improvement project was proposed to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust—a venture which encompasses the original microscope replacement project, a campus-wide technology upgrade plan, OASIS, and new furnishings and technology for J. Raymond Chadwick Library. The successful outcome is that the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust will be awarding $119,731, resulting in 22 new microscopes for the lab, completion of the hardware and software needs of OASIS, and to cover year one costs for the technology upgrade plan.

If this amazing metamorphosis was sparked by the inspiration of just two motivated, selfless human beings, imagine what more of us can accomplish when we pursue our vision together. IW.EDU

“We joined the Legacy Society because both Pastor John D. Cornish ’66 and I received an excellent education at Iowa Wesleyan. In our careers as pastor and teacher, we were able to pass what we learned to others. When we went on to achieve advanced degrees, we knew how beneficial our undergraduate education was to us. We are thankful to be Iowa born and bred, and we appreciated all the small towns where John pastored, including the Mt. Pleasant Circuit. ” - Sandra J. Buckman Cornish, ‘64
