It reflects his training as a plant physiological ecologist and a twenty-year association with the NSF Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program. Knapp is the coauthor of Long-Term Ecological Research in Tallgrass Prairie. He is a professor and senior ecologist in the Department of Biology at Colorado State University.
