Get to Know UNL Students

Sioux City, Iowa - Bishop Heelan Catholic High School

I am 19 years old and have played the game of golf for as long as I can remember. In high school I also participated in volleyball and cross country. Golf has always been my number one though! I have one older brother who plays football at the University of Northern Iowa. A few of my other hobbies include baking, working out, and napping.

I decided to pick UNL PGM as my college major because of the endless opportunities it comes with. UNL is also one of the most welcoming communities I have ever been in. Everyone within the program is so helpful in all aspects of college, golf or not they are there for you. It just felt like a home away from home and that is why I am where I am.

in the golf world and beyond. I like to set the bar high for myself, I have many goals set for my future

My biggest goal is to open my own indoor/outdoor facility which will include all aspects of golf and fitness. I want to be able to coach others, helping them grow their strength to preform to their best abilities on the golf course.

As far as my summer internship plans go… I am still currently exploring all my options to see what best fits my interest. I am hoping to find a place that feels like home. I want to be able to explore new opportunities, expand my knowledge, and make lots of new connections!

PGA sanctioned golf course. In my past I have played baseball, basketball, and soccer. I was on my high school golf team all 4 years and played in many Iowa PGA tournaments. I live with my mom and dad and two cats. I love fishing and playing video games with new friends and buddies from back home.

I choose UNL cause the first visit was love at first sight. I felt I was going to be taken care of and that if I had questions I was able to go ask and get an answer right away the support was amazing. I can’t see myself at any other university.

My future goals are to become a head pro or a teaching instructor at a

I’m planning on doing a summer internship with the Iowa PGA section to further my tournament skills and gaining connections. Tabor, Iowa - Fremont-Mills

Played golf, football, basketball, and baseball. Have 2 brothers and a sister!

I chose UNL PGM because the moment I stepped into the building I knew this place was where I wanted to spend the next 4 years studying.

My future goals are to get a job in Colorado and run a course in the mountains!

For my summer internship I am hoping to work at Lost Rail golf course in Omaha, Nebraska.

Runnells, Iowa - Southeast Polk

I played golf and wrestled. I have two siblings, a brother and a sister. I enjoy being outside doing things like hunting and fishing.

I joined the UNL PGM Program because I can tell the people here care about my success and this program has given me an opportunity to follow my passions.

My future goals are to be a top instructor and someday open my own teaching facilities.

I don’t have any plans for my internship yet, but I would like to go somewhere on the east coast.

Jake Malcom

Hamburg, Iowa - Sidney Cowboys

I did cross country, basketball, track, golf, and baseball.

I chose the PGM major because I could not see myself doing anything other than golf because it is something that I love doing.

My dream job would be to work on the Titleist tour truck going around to all the tournaments.

I played golf and swam all 4 years of high school. My favorite golf memory was getting a hole-in-one on a par 4. It was the very first hole in a school dual meet. The hole was #1 at Grandview in Des Moines. I have one brother who is taking this school year to study abroad in Freiburg, Germany. I also like to spend my time at the gym and rock climbing.

I have loved the game of golf for as long as I can remember. When I found out that I had the opportunity to do something in college that heavily related to golf, I knew that is what I wanted to do. The reason I chose Nebraska specifically was because of how great the faculty were and how welcoming everything and everyone was.

I would like to gain as much experience within my internships in a big focus of golf and then after graduation work myself through the CMAA program towards the club manager side of things.

I have just secured my internship for the summer of 2023 at Des Moines Golf & Country Club. I plan on going to Bend, Oregon for my extended internship starting in the summer of 2024.

Tipton, Iowa – Tipton High School

I am the son of Tim and Katie Ryan. In high school I participated in basketball, cross country, and golf. I was a part of a state runner up cross-country team my junior year and a state championship team my senior year. In basketball I was Academic All-Conference all four years of high school and was chosen to be a part of the River Valley Conference All-South Team my senior year. I love to golf; in my junior year of high school, I placed third at the state meet, and my senior year set the ninehole record at my school of 31. I love to hang out with my family. They have been a major part of all my success in both high school and now college. In my free time I like to hang out with friends and watch sports.

I chose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's PGA Management program because I love golf and I want to help this game grow whether that be

Mason Garner

teaching people how to play or managing a country club.

My future goals in golf are to find a successful club and start there and move up into the higher ranks of the club in the future. Another golf goal I have it to play in some section events and in the future play in some Q-school events in hopes to eventually play on tour.

Although I am not entirely sure where I am going to do my internship this summer, I am looking forward to this opportunity brought about by the UNL PGA Management program.
