Iowa PGA Executive Director Iowa PGA Golf Magazine – Winter Review of 2022

What another great year of golf in 2022. There was some great play by our PGA Professionals, our Junior Tour/Pee Wee Tour players and many more highlights in 2022 that are captured in this digital magazine. Please also click on the Iowa Golf Association Yearbook for 2022 that they produce for the many amateurs that play their events. Both Associations love to see great golf and always wish to highlight it when we can.

Little old Iowa will be at the forefront of golf in 2023 after the two major international golf competitions announced their respective Captains for the Walker Cup and the Ryder Cup in early 2022. I guess in many ways we do some great things in golf and now the world will know even more about what we all enjoy in our state.

On March 9th, Iowa Golf Hall of Famer Mike McCoy was named as the 2023 Walker Cup Captain to be held on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. Mike has had an impressive record in Iowa events but also on the national and international scene. McCoy is the 2015 USGA Mid-Amateur Champion and competed on the 2015 Walker Cup as a player. McCoy added to this wonderful record in 2022 by winning the R & A’s Senior Amateur Championship at Royal Dornoch. He followed his good friend and Iowa Golf Hall of Famer Gene Elliott as Gene won this same championship in 2021. It is nice to see that trophy remain in Iowa for one more year.

On February 28th, PGA of America President Jim Richerson named Iowa Golf Hall of Famer and twotime Major Champion Zach Johnson as the 30th US Ryder Cup Captain. The 2023 Ryder Cup will be held on foreign soil at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy. Along with Zach’s 2007 Master’s and 2015 British Open wins, he has played in five Ryder Cups as a player (2006, ’10, ’12, ’14 and ’16). He has also served as a Vice Captain in the last two Ryder Cups. Can you believe that Iowa has the captains at both Major International Golf Competitions? I am sure that Mike and Zach only dreamed as youngsters that they could ever play in the Walker and Ryder Cups let alone serve as a Captain of their respective teams. AND they get to do it together in 2023! As the movie said, “Is this heaven?” My guess is maybe Iowa really is HEAVEN! Good luck to both as they lead their teams to victory.

It was great to see another of our PGA Members get into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame. The 2022 Class included Mark Egly from the Des Moines Driving Range as one of the three inductees and highlighted on page ??? in this magazine. Congratulations to Mark as he joins this prestigious Hall of Fame in Iowa.

I was privileged to held introduce a long-time mentor and friend, along with Jeff Wendel and Iowa Golf Hall of Famer Doug Snook at the Hall of Fame Ceremony. The late Charlie “Pribbs” Pribble was one of the more deserving inductees into the Hall. I got lucky and hired Pribbs in 1993 to assist me in building Airport National in Cedar Rapids along with my business partner at the time, the late Mark Lemon. As described by his colleagues, he was ahead of his time. I got to see that on a daily basis as we built and grew-in Airport National. I have been lucky to have worked alongside three Iowa Golf Hall of Fame Golf Course Superintendents – Snook (2011), Steve Tyler (2010) and now Pribbs. Next time you see the Golf Course Superintendent at your course, please pull them aside and say, “Thank You for all the tireless work you do on our behalf at our facility”. I know that they would appreciate that very much. Pull me aside sometime and will tell you about Pribbs, Snook and Ty and all they did for a young PGA Professional. Plus, I have a few fun stories about them.

We had some of our PGA Professionals compete at the highest level of golf again in 2022. Sean McCarty of Brown Deer Golf played in the 2022 PGA Championship held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma in May. See his results on Page 60.
