2015 IFBF state scholarships announced Iowa students are preparing themselves to become the future leaders of agriculture and are interested in a variety of areas ranging from genetics to agriculture business and agriculture education. The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) has awarded $1,000 scholarships for tuition to 170 students who plan to study agriculture at their chosen colleges and universities. In addition, Micaela Bryant of Lee County was named the recipient of the Daniel Johnson Memorial Scholarship, a one-time $500 award for a student from one of eleven counties in southeast Iowa: Keokuk, Washington, Louisa, Muscatine, Wapello, Jefferson, Henry, Des Moines, Davis, Van Buren and Lee. The scholarship is awarded in honor of the late Daniel Johnson, a

former Iowa Farm Bureau director, farmer, volunteer firefighter and school board president. Nathan Yeager of Wapello County was named the recipient of the Edward W. and Isabelle M. Klodt Memorial Scholarship, a one-time $500 award for a Wapello County student pursuing a degree in agriculture. The Klodts were community leaders, progressive farmers, and conservationists focused on the future and improving their farm and community. The memorial scholarship embodies the values that Ed and Isabelle represented: leadership, hard work, dedication to others, and a belief in higher education. “These scholarships help students pursue their dreams and so many of those career aspirations include agriculture or support jobs in

Iowa Cattlemen’s Association to host June pasture walks SUBMITTED BY RINGGOLD, WAYNE The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is holding three pasture walks in mid-June, giving cowcalf producers in northeast, east and south central parts of the state an opportunity to hear from experts on brush management and maximizing feeder calf value. “The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association continually hears interest from its members wanting to learn about practices to enhance their operation through on-farm visits and industry experts. While Iowa’s cow-calf business is certainly profitable, the practices and topics discussed at the mid-June pasture walks will no doubt help Iowa’s cow-calf sector enhance pasture quality and add value to calves destined for the feedlot later this fall,” says ICA CEO Matt Deppe. The evening walks will run from 4:30-5:45 p.m. and will

be led by those cattle producers hosting the walk. The event will then transition to the meal venues where speakers will address issues. Scott Flynn, a field scientist at Dow AgroSciences, will speak about effectively managing

brush while Dr. Terry Engleken, DVM of Iowa State University, will speak on maximizing feeder calf value. ICA director of government relations and public policy, Justine Stevenson, will also give an ICA update.

Dates and locations are: *Tuesday, June 16 – Eric Smith farm, 2417 348th St., Decorah, with meal at the farm *Wednesday, June 17 – Marty Green farm, 2440 180th St., Delmar, with meal at Buzzy’s in Welton *Thursday, June 18 – Dan Hanrahan farm, near Prole (from Bevington 1.5 miles north on Warren Avenue, west 1 mile on 190th Avenue, and north 1.25 miles on Woodwind Trail; pasture is on the east side of the road). Meal will be at SP Genetics, 3331 Highway 92, Prole. There is no cost to attend, but producers are asked to RSVP to the ICA office by calling 515-296-2266 so meals can be planned for appropriately.

Iowa Cattlemen’s Association to host June pasture walks SUBMITTED BY HUMBOLDT, WRIGHT The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is holding three pasture walks in mid-June, giving cow-calf producers in northeast, east and south central parts of the state an opportunity to hear from experts on brush management and maximizing feeder calf value. “The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association continually hears interest from its members wanting to learn about practices to enhance their operation through on-farm visits and industry experts. While Iowa’s cow-calf business is certainly profitable, the practices and topics discussed at the mid-June pasture walks will no doubt help Iowa’s cow-calf sector

enhance pasture quality and add value to calves destined for the feedlot later this fall,” says ICA CEO Matt Deppe. The evening walks will run from 4:30-5:45 p.m. and will be led by those cattle producers hosting the walk. The event will then transition to the meal venues where speakers will address issues. Scott Flynn, a field scientist at Dow AgroSciences, will speak about effectively managing brush while Dr. Terry Engleken, DVM of Iowa State University, will speak on maximizing feeder calf value. ICA director of government relations and public policy, Justine Stevenson, will also give an ICA update. Dates and locations are:

Farmland rental rates down SUBMITTED BY CHICKASAW Rental rates for Iowa farmland decreased by 5 percent in 2015, according to results from the Cash Rental Rates for Iowa – 2015 Survey conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. This is the second consecutive year of declining rates after a 15-year streak of increasing rental rates, accumulating a 9 percent loss since 2013. Average rents were lower in all nine crop reporting districts, according to Alejandro Plastina, assistant professor and extension economist with Iowa State University. The average estimated cash rent for corn and soybean land in the state for 2015 was $246 per acre, a decrease of $14 per acre or nearly 5 percent from last year. Low crop prices for the 2014 crop and small- to negative-profit margin forecasts for this year’s crop put downward pressure on rental rates, he said. The largest decreases in land rental occurred in central and west central Iowa, at $24 and $23 per acre, respectively. Those districts had the highest rents among all crop reporting districts in 2014. Northeast Iowa reported the highest average in 2015 at $273,

and the lowest district value was $187 in south central Iowa. Grundy County had the highest average rent in the state, at $316 per acre. Crop Reporting District 3, representing northeast Iowa, reported an average crop ground rental rate of $273, a decrease from 2014. County average farmland cash rental rates in this district ranged from $311 (Dubuque County) to $223 (Allamakee County). Additional cash rental rate information for the overall average and high, medium, and low quality corn and soybean ground is available for each county in the full report. For this district, average rent for alfalfa hay ground is $290 per acre and $188 per acre for grass hay ground. Average rent for improved permanent pasture ground is $89 per acre while the unimproved permanent pasture ground average cash rent is $64 per acre. Plastina doesn’t think it is a trend yet, but it certainly is a reversal of the 15-year trend we’ve seen of land rental rate increases. Land rates and other input costs take time to adjust to lower levels of crop revenue; so if corn and soybean prices don’t improve soon, we can expect land rental

rates to continue to decline. Plastina indicated the typical rental rates per bushel of corn yield, soybean yield and the average Corn Suitability Rating 2 point were computed for each county. In addition, typical charges for land growing oats and hay, for grazing pasture and corn stalks and renting for hunting rights were reported. Rental values were estimated by asking people familiar with land rental markets what they thought were typical rates in their county. Of the 1,437 total responses received, 49 percent came from farmers, 27 percent from landowners, 12 percent from agricultural lenders, 10 percent from professional farm managers and 2 percent from other professionals. The Cash Rental Rates for Iowa – 2015 Survey is available online as a downloadable document from the ISU Extension and Outreach Store, https://store.extension.iastate.edu. Other resources available for estimating a fair cash rental rate are located on Ag Decision Maker, http://www.extension.iastate. edu/agdm. All documents include decision file electronic worksheets to help analyze leasing questions.
