SUMMER OF LOVE

It’s wedding season and we’re feeling amorous

Cover image: Jenny Packham AW18, jennypackham.com

When Harry met Meghan. It's the unlikely, modern-day fairy tale come true with a kick-ass leading lady at the helm, and while the world watches the beautiful actress/ humanitarian marry Britain's most eligible bachelor on 19 May, there's no better reason to bring you a weddings issue of our own. Whether the traditional day just doesn’t do it for you or unexpected events mean a change of plans, wedding nowadays have no set rules as our real life weddings feature shows on page 32. We talk to five couples - including Yours Truly - whose nuptials were big days with a difference. We also help the bride and groom to look the best versions of themselves for the Big Day with our recommended list of beauty enhancers/ fixers (p64) and we even make sure wedding guests arrive stylishly with some expert advice on what to wear on page 46. And while we doubt the Ibiza Body Bootcamp is the ideal honeymoon hangout (but you never know), it's a great place for a body overhaul - wedding or not - as i-on regular Emily Murray finds out (p58). Congratulations to last month's competition winner, Molly Gordon, who won an overnight stay at the Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Hotel. This month we’re offering another chance to be a tourist in the capital

WE CAN’T WAIT TO… The i-on team shares their must-dos this month

1

…take in a few good movies “It’s almost my favourite time of the year: the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Running since 1947, the festival is renowned around the world for discovering and promoting the very best in international cinema, and is an absolute must for movie-buffs like me. The opening night will premier the highly-regarded drama Puzzle starring Kelly McDonald, and I’ve got my ticket.” 20 June – 01 July, edfilmfest.org.uk Holly Tracey, Content Coordinator

EIFF Closing Gala 2017

2 …have a Wicked time “Regular readers will know how much I love a musical, so I’m a little bit beside myself about the imminent arrival in Edinburgh of the West End classic Wicked. I saw the production on the London stage and it blew me away, so I can’t wait to see it again at The Playhouse.” 08 May – 09 June, atgtickets.com Amanda Southey, Business Development Manager

08

…take my daughter to her first festival “Glastonbury it ain’t, but Wildhood Festival is a pretty great place to start your kids on the circuit. Billed as a curated weekend of excitement and adventure for children aged 12 and under, the magical festival will include folklore and storytelling, arts and crafts, yoga, pony riding and more. All activities are included in the ticket price and, located at Tullibole Castle near Kinross, it’s less than an hour’s drive from Edinburgh.” 09 and 10 June, wildhoodfestival.com Carine Seitz, Contributing Editor

NEWS

4 …see out being single in style “I’m getting married in July and I want to see my single years out with a bang, so I gave my maid of honour strict instructions to plan my hen night well in advance of the big day. I was delighted then, when she got us tickets for The Carnival of Light at the Usher Hall on 02 June. A club concept like no other, the event will merge a spectrum of lights, giant illuminated lanterns, lasers and live performance to a soundtrack of house, garage and techno.” eventbrite.com Lucy Cruickshank, Digital Content Executive

5 …have curry with the stars “A Michelin star in a five luxury star hotel, to be more precise. Michelin-stared Indian chef Alfred Prasad is returning to Gleneagles for one night with his unique take on classic Indian favourites. Ticket price includes a welcome drink, live music and buffet-style dinner, plus more live music afterwards in the Auchterarder 70 bar. Now that’s my idea of a night in with a curry.” 12 May, The Dormy, Gleneagles, Tel: 01764 694 270. Laura Cully, Director

Going Up THE ROYAL FAMILY The Windsors are enjoying a surge in popularity. From Her Majesty on the front row at LFW; to a new baby; and a certain impending wedding, it seems the common people are enjoying seeing how the other half live. HOLIDAYS The start of summer means the start of holiday season. Even if you're not getting away, there are bank holidays to look forward to. And we definitely do look forward to them – a recent survey showed that Brits reckon we deserve an extra eight days off a year. Hear, hear. GIN Edinburgh Gin has launched an aromatic gin made with native and rare foliage picked from Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden. Edinburgh 1670 is a unique gin recipe that includes exotic plants Piper Leaf and Tasmanian Mountain Pepper. edinburghgin.com

Barometer Going Down ANY ALCOHOL THAT ISN’T… GIN In more gin news, Lidl are launching an in-store Scottish Craft Gin Festival in all Scottish stores. The new collection, available from 03 May while stocks last, features eight gins from six artisan Scottish producers across Shetland, Orkney, Perthshire, Edinburgh and Glasgow. lidl.co.uk BOOZING And just to be completely contradictory, the number of people choosing to cut alcohol out altogether is increasing – there’s been a 40 per cent rise in millennials choosing kombucha over cocktails. Search #sober on Insta if you don’t believe us. THOUGHTLESS POSTING When a lifestyle-website-that-shall-remainunnamed posted on Instagram about ‘mixed weight relationships’, the backlash was quick and mighty. THERE’S SOMETHING GOING DOWN

Leila Williams taps into her love of the sea at Port Edgar Marina

I

love the sea, always have, always will. My biggest wish though about living so close to it is to make more use of it, just like the people do at Port Edgar Marina. Did you even know we have the largest watersports and activity centre in Scotland practically on our doorstep? Me neither, so I’ll be rounding up the troops and heading to the marina in South Queensferry for the open weekend on 12 and 13 May. I can’t wait. On land the team behind Canteen Street Food Festival is making sure there’s a party atmosphere with lots of food offerings, activities for the kids (face painting, slime making and kid cave all included) and music from Four Corners DJs. And the marina’s on-site shop Bosuns Locker is offering 20% off selected lines from brands including Joules, Schoffel and Fairfax&Favor. I’ve clocked a pair of loafers – fingers crossed. Off land things crank up a gear if you’re 8 years old or over, with 100s of 60 minute on-the-water taster sessions, from paddleboarding to kayaking. A personal highlight is

"DID YOU EVEN KNOW WE HAVE THE LARGEST WATERSPORTS AND ACTIVITY CENTRE IN SCOTLAND PRACTICALLY ON OUR DOORSTEP?" the wet, fast and exciting 30-minute Rib ride under the three bridges (Forth Road, Rail and the new Queensfeery Crossing) – safety gear provided. If only every weekend could be like this… See you there?

The Port Edgar Marina Open Weekend, 12 and 13 May 2018, 10am-6pm. Parking £2 on entry. For further information, visit portedgarmarina.co.uk. To pre-book a taster session, £5 per child age 8-16 and £10 per adult, contact Port Edgar Watersports on 0131 319 1820 or email bookings@portedgarwatersports.com. portedgar.co.uk, portedgarwatersports.com

SUNSHINE IN A TABLET

It’s May. It’s sunny. But we live in Scotland. Even when it’s summer we don’t always get enough sun. Sad, but true. Lack of sunshine and blue skies makes us a bit glum and can affect our physical health, so short of moving to the south of Spain (there’s a plan) Vitamin D is your answer, in supplement form. They make sure you’re up on your daily dosage with easy-to-take capsules, tablets or liquids, and will keep your immune system, muscles and mood in tip top shape. To find out more, visit sunvitd3.co.uk and enter SUNVIT20ION for 20 per cent off

Could the Radisson be about to set a new trend? We think maybe so with the introduction of its new Morning Tea. Just like its better-known sibling, Morning Tea is a great chance for grownups to get together over tea, savouries and pastries, only the ritual begins in the morning instead of the afternoon. Morning Tea for two at Radisson Blu is served from 10am to noon, Monday to Friday. For just £40 per couple you’ll get all your morning favourites to choose from including freshly made bacon rolls, Danish pastries, yoghurt and granola pots with a side of freshly squeezed orange juice, and tea or coffee, of course.

I-ON LOVES… Practical, compact, and fuss-free, IOLLA will see you well this summer with their all new sunglasses clip-on range. Not got a frame to clip-on to? All single vision eyewear is £65, regardless of your prescription. Find out more at the Glasgow or Edinburgh showrooms. iolla.com

ON THE FOOD RADAR

It's been a bumper year for new openings in Edinburgh and it’s showing no sign of letting up soon. Legendary chefs Alain Roux and Michel Roux O.B.E. open Prince Brasserie by Alain Roux at The Balmoral on 01 June. Rumour has it the food and interiors are so stunning they might break Instagram. You could be one of the first to see it for yourself as we have 25 spaces at the launch party exclusively for i-on readers. (See page 12 for more details). Down on the waterfront Newhaven was once a bustling port for fishermen selling at the fishmarket. While we’re not proclaiming a new restaurant opening will bring the harbour back to its glory days, The Fishmarket, a collaboration between Gary Welch of Welch Fishmongers and Roy Brett, chef patron of Ondine, and their shared passion for all things seafood, is definitely a great starting point. Newhaven Harbour, 24-25 Pier Place.

At, i-on we love to keep things local and independent too, and were delighted to spot the newest deli in Stockbridge on a recent ramble along the high street, at 74 Raeburn Place. Inspired by an appreciation for great food and a passion for good old-fashioned hospitality, the salads at Good & Proper are so good they should be sinful. Try the Puy lentils with lemon, aubergine, tomatoes and pickled cucumber if you can, a great takeaway option for sunny days in the Botanics. We’re also excited to hear that former Castle Terrace couple, Roberta Hall and Shaun McCarron, are opening their first restaurant mid-June, on Albert Place at the top of Leith Walk. The Little Chartroom will be a neighbourhood bistro serving French British style cuisine. thelittlechartroom.com

A dinner date that’s different

We’ve been fans of Buck and Birch for some time now and we’ve a feeling that 2018 is going to be a good year for the foraging duo behind the brand. Rupert Waites and Tom Chisholm are sharing their love for Scotland’s natural larder with a series of pop up dinners at Dalriada on Portobello prom. Called Nurture, Nature, Eat, the communal dining events offer a unique six-course taster menu of the best seasonal Scottish ingredients. Truly great food and hospitality, and a chance to learn about what you eat. Don’t want to miss out? Get your tickets for the next date, 18 May, at eventbrite.co.uk.

ALL SORTED?

A guide to how your home can become a Festival holiday let

I

n August, Edinburgh becomes home to over 400,000 visitors when they arrive in the city to experience first-hand the revelry and culture of the iconic Fringe festival. And, as tempting the thought of letting out your home to tourists during the festival is, the administrative difficulties often associated with such a plan may far outweigh the potential financial reward. That’s when Airsorted offers the ideal solution and can help make your plan a reality. Fiona, an Airsorted client, confirms: “We don’t have the time or the resources to manage the flat ourselves so Airsorted is ideal; we have total confidence that they will deal with all guest communication and ensure that the flat is ready for the next visitor.” Airsorted has been helping hosts in Edinburgh make short and long term letting easier since 2016 and manage around 400 homes in the capital. In that time Airsorted hosts have earned £4.4 million in revenue

This property, managed by Airsorted, is a delightful newly renovated apartment - a historic gem within Riddle's Court, a 16th century merchant's house on the Royal Mile. The bedroom, with its painted beams, was once the location of a banquet hosted by King James VI of Scotland. It is now a bright, warm and comfortable flat with a tasteful mix of traditional and modern furnishings. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/19897807

from home sharing on platforms including Airbnb, HomeAway, Bookings.com and Expedia. A successful listing in home sharing is the culmination of many interlinking processes and Airsorted, a company rooted in technology, offers an end to end service including listing creation, guest vetting, price optimisation, 24/7 guest communications and hotel quality cleaning and linen, taking all of the practical headaches out of hosting.

If you are an Edinburgh-based host already, or are new to home sharing and interested in hosting in Edinburgh, Airsorted would love to hear from you so give them a call on 0131 322 1009 or visit the website at https://airsorted.uk/edinburgh/

Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Close to home I’d always head to Portobello beach; wander along the prom and enjoy a glass of white at Miro’s. Further afield I’d head out along the East Coast and chill on the white sand dunes at Gullane beach. I like being near water, there’s something perpetually calming and comforting about it.

Edinburgh The owner of production company Greenroom Films on Portobello, creative collaborations and The Devil’s Advocate

Where do you call home? I’ve lived all over Edinburgh but five years ago decided to move back to the place I grew up, Portobello. For me it feels like home, and I love the fusion of old school Porty mixed with the independent bars, restaurants, coffee shops and galleries.

The city’s best kept secret? The Devil’s Advocate; you’d only really find it if you were looking for it. The terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon with good company and perfectly made cocktails.

Edinburgh’s best bits

The city’s most vibrant area? It’s a close call between Portobello and Leith. Both still possess the character they’re renowned for but with a contemporary twist as new crowds set up home. Leith is probably a little more hipster, Portobello family hipster.

What does a typical day involve? Heading along to my office at The Shore, grabbing a coffee from Custom Lane and if the day’s not too busy, enjoying lunch at Chop House – a rare but cherished occasion as of late. Any new projects in the pipeline? I only very recently became the very proud owner of Greenroom Films so that’s my absolute focus right now. I’m working on evolving and diversifying the company; finding new ways of doing things, pushing creative collaborations and producing beautiful films. Best thing about the city? The diverse and stunning landscape - from the historic buildings and cobbled streets of the Old Town to the white sands of Portobello beach and the quirky mixed architecture of Leith.

from copy to coffee

Glasgow lifestyle bloggers are setting up shop #IRL, making the move from Instagramming carefully-curated pictures of their morning coffee to serving them up in their newly-opened cafes MARKET COFFEE With its pastel tones and rose gold embellishments, the interiors style of Glasgow blogger Kate Spiers (AKA Kate La Vie, pictured above left) is unmistakable. She and husband, Jordan, opened Southside coffee shop Market late last year, and since then have managed to amass 11k followers on Instagram. I guess that’s why they call them influencers. 1071 Cathcart Rd, G42 9AF, @marketgla.

GOOD TIMES ROLL Sheri Scott, pictured left, PR and blogger behind Forever Yours Betty, has opened Good Times Roll in Ibrox along with boyfriend, Steven Eddie. Serving up Mortons rolls with fillings including square sausage (and a vegan version), eggs, hash brown and tattie scones, as well as coffee from Dear Green, she describes the new enterprise as “the most extra roll and coffee shop you’ve ever seen.” 208-210 Copland Rd, Ibrox, G51 2L, @g00dtimesroll.

Champagne Central has stepped things up a notch with a swanky refurb and the introduction of the Taittinger Trio Tasting Flight; giving the opportunity to sample three Champagnes from the iconic Taittinger label matched to delicious canapés designed by executive chef James Murphy. We enjoyed it so much that we went on to order a bottle of Taittinger Brut Reserve, £65, along with a selection of snacks including a seafood grazing plate, £15; olives, £4.50; mozzarella bites, £4.50, and chunky fries, £4.50. Book beforehand to avoid disappointment – it was busy and buzzy on our visit. 99 Gordon St, G1 3SF, Tel: 0141 240 3700. champagnecentral.co.uk

Where do you go for a quick escape? Loch Lomond. There’s magic in the serenity of the loch and the awe-inspiring landscapes.

Glasgow’s best bits

What does a typical day involve? The only constant is my morning routine walks with my wee dog Haggis, a meditation to kick-start the day, emails and social media. After I could be attending or planning events, blogging and brainstorming new features for Glasglow Girls Club. Tell us about Glasglow Girls Club. It’s a platform for members and businesses in Glasgow to promote what they do to a captive audience and help as many people in Glasgow as possible. My life mantra is ‘you grow by helping others’ and it’s on this basis that the group was created, and is run. Best thing about the city? The people, followed closely by the shopping, music and restaurant scenes.

Why Glasgow? I am a weegie born and bred and, although I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating places, Glasgow will always have my heart.

What’s the city’s best kept secret? Our amazing markets. The iconic Arches has reopened as a food market on Fridays and Saturdays, and BAAD in the Barras is an amazing space. Is there anywhere in the city that you think deserves a shout out? The super stylish Hutchesons in the Merchant City; the 158 Club Lounge (on the ground floor) is a true nod to old-school Glasgow glamour.

What would you change about the city? I’d love Glasgow to follow Melbourne’s lead and bring the laneways to life with graffiti art and cool pop ups. The city has an edgy enough personality to pull it off. Sum up Glasgow in three words: Edgy. Creative. Gallus.

The Diy Wedding MAIRI & RHYS

M

ake-up artist Mairi Gordon and electrician Rhys Mclellan were married in the Thomas Morton Hall at Leith Theatre last year. Homemade and DIY touches made their day more personal. “We chose Leith Theatre because we loved its history (it was the first and only place we looked at), and decorated it with the help of a prop designer friend. We decided to do everything ourselves for a couple of reasons; first off, I had a firm idea about how I wanted the food to be. I also wanted it to be very personal, and by getting friends and family involved the results were so much more satisfying. Plus, we saved a lot of money! It was a lot of work, but it was just how we wanted it. Our flowers, decorations and invites were all handmade by friends and family. We borrowed and made lots; a colonial vintage bar, life sized pink flamingos, a vintage cake trolley, a wooden cake stand, vintage cutlery and wine crates – all these quirky touches made it special. We made the

Dress - I wore a Jenny Packham ‘Beatrice’ dress. Jewellery - My moonstone headband was bespoke from The Coral Grove in Cornwall. My birth mother Lesley lent me an opal antique ring and earrings to match. Flowers - I arranged for snowdrops to be brought from Cambo Estate; they were my late mums favourite and we scattered her ashes at the Estate so it felt like she was part of the day. Groom’s outfit - Rhys wore his Dads kilt, and had a plaid made by Stewart Christie & Co. It was a very rare tartan so they did a brilliant job matching them.

ceremony our own with poems and songs, and wrote our own vows, and at the reception we named each table after one of our favourite albums and used the original record sleeves to signpost them. “A good pal of mine, an amazing chef named Allana Harrower, made the food. Between us we came up with a menu for a buffet, with a selection of shellfish, cheeses, cured meats and salads to start, and main courses included individual fish pies and venison casserole. There were fish ‘n’ chips canapés beforehand, served in paper cones made from old issues of The Broons. “We went to Japan for our honeymoon, I’d always wanted to see the cherry blossom trees and follow the trail. We got rail passes, and for two weeks we travelled around and stayed in the most beautiful places.”

The Elopment HOLLY & RICHARD

H

olly Mitchell owns Scottish fashion label Totty Rocks and her husband, Richard McLelland, is involved in the craft beer business, with Williams Bros and Drygate breweries. They got married in the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. “We never wanted a traditional wedding, but committing to spending the rest of our lives together was still very important. We decided on Las Vegas to run away from outside influence. We wanted a cinematic, surreal experience, rather than one regulated by religion or tradition, and for the wedding to be a statement of intent on how we wanted our marriage to be. “Richard took care of all the arrangements in advance. We arrived in Vegas two days before getting hitched, and with none of the usual pre-wedding pressures we were already in full-on holiday mode. Everything ran like clockwork, except for one of us (to this

34

day we can't admit who) losing our marriage license in the Paris Casino the night before the wedding – we had to dash to The Clark County Clerks Office in the morning for a replacement. “At the chapel, ‘Elvis’ eased us into proceedings with a few bars of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), and before we knew it we were saying ‘I do’ and walking down the aisle to Viva Las Vegas. We managed to sneak a few (strictly forbidden) wedding photos at the Neon Graveyard, before heading back to The Strip for a serenaded Gondola ride around the canals of The Venetian and dinner at Bouchon. “In the morning we were picked up by limo for a chopper ride over Vegas and into the Grand Canyon for lunch. Then we collected our convertible Camaro and set off on a road trip: first staying in a beach house in LA, then a Hunting Lodge in Yosemite, and finishing up at a small love nest apartment in San Francisco. It was a blast.”

Dress Inspired by a Balenciaga style from the 1950s, I made my dress in olive green taffeta tipped with dusky pink satin. Hair and makeup I did my own, with strict guidelines from Victoria Watson of Toto Make-up. Rings I had a vintage band to get married with then, on our road trip, we found the perfect ring in a cluttered antique shop in San Francisco. Groom’s outfit Richard wore Jeffrey West boots with Cuban heels and engraved soles. His tuxedo suit was dark aubergine with a matte satin collar, and I made his shirt, which he wore with a black skinny tie.

The Secret JENNY & STUART

n imminent move across the globe and lack of funds meant that digital sales manager Jenny, and DJ and editor Stuart Todd, had to make a difficult decision about their wedding day. “Stuart proposed to me out of the blue not long after having lost his father, saying that life is too short. We were neither of us really ‘wedding’ people, agreeing that spending crazy money on one day is a waste. That, and the fact that

we were due to move to Dubai in six weeks (meaning we’d have issues living together without being married), meant that we needed to act fast. The costs of moving coupled with getting married were spiralling out of control – when we looked at our guest list we realised we just couldn’t afford to have everyone present, and something had to give. “So we decided to have a secret wedding, getting married at The City Chambers with only immediate family present. As we were moving to Dubai two days later, we told all our friends we were having a leaving party that night and invited them to meet us at 99 Hanover Street. We rocked up in our wedding outfits and everyone was pretty shocked (especially the staff who weren’t quite prepared for the party that ensued), but so happy for us. Some of our friends were disappointed though, and we understand why. I do hate that my best girlfriends and Stuart's best friends weren’t part of the wedding day.”

wouldn’t be able to wear certain styles. I was drawn to dresses that just weren’t suitable for a bump and there were tears in many a dress shop. Then, my sister booked me an appointment at Rachel Scott Couture on Dundas Street. Rachel was amazing, showing me lots of different styles, but it was a Grecian silk dress from Amanda Wakeley that felt instantly right. I bought it that day. “I was about 30 weeks pregnant when we got married. I was still working, iron deficient, and after planning a wedding and moving house I couldn’t face a flight somewhere, so we had a mini-moon. We went to Isle of Eriska and then onto Gleneagles which was utterly sublime.”

Behind the Scenes

I wanted to make the morning as stress free as possible so I had Leanne of Babu Hair & Beauty come to do our hair at the venue. Her wedding work is incredible so I knew I would be in safe hands. My friend Dawn did my make-up and Lorraine Wood flowers did our beautiful bouquets and dressed the tables with Ivy. Our wedding cake was from Liggy's Cake Company and Ben pre-made the cocktails/mocktails we used as favours.

When we heard that the historic Borthwick Castle had recently been refurbished we immediately booked an appointment – as soon as we stepped through the door we knew instantly it was The One. “About two months into planning, I discovered I was pregnant. I was extremely emotional and felt like I’d ruined our big day. My perfect white dress wouldn’t be as perfect as I imagined; I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the Champagne and fine wines we’d selected; I would be boring and dance awkwardly. We talked about postponing but in the end we brought the date forward by nearly two months as the original was so close to my due date. Fortunately Borthwick Castle could accommodate us. I was just so surprised, emotional and unnerved about what the future held but it was short lived and looking back, it was the best thing we’ve ever done. I walked down the aisle carrying my daughter – it’s pretty special. “I hadn’t bought the dress yet and wasn’t set on one in particular but it was difficult knowing I now simply

ayley Daines is the model and beauty writer behind amodelmoment.com. After getting engaged, we were on holiday in Portugal having dinner at Pezinhos N'areia, when we realised it would be the perfect venue. I wanted a beach wedding, so that’s where we returned to get married and it truly was the best weekend of our lives. “Zachary’s mum is from Singapore, and there were a lot of family there who couldn't be with us in Portugal, so we had a second wedding to celebrate with them. Stand Out Moments

the first for the marriage contract, second for the bride’s side of the family and third for the groom’s side. We had a miniature version of this at The Landmark Singapore, where everyone could celebrate together. “We wore traditional outfits from Fatimah Mohsin. I had so much fun trying on all the different colours, I love how vibrant the weddings are there. It was hard to choose a final outfit, but I knew I wanted strong jewel colours of emerald green or ruby red and settled on the former. “The food was incredible. There was a selection of traditional Singapore food; curries, rice and noodle dishes, with lots of fresh fruit and desserts. Our wedding cake was a traditional savoury pulut kuning cake, made with glutinous rice and meat. At a Singapore wedding there’s no formal sit down meal; guests come and go and help themselves to food as they please. “We honeymooned in Bali which was amazing. After our Portugal wedding we had a mini-moon to Lisbon, which we absolutely loved and definitely want to go back.”

The ‘un-wedding’ wedding London wedding planning duo Union & Co have just launched their services north of the border, bringing their cool contemporary style to Scottish couples looking to do things a bit differently. Co-founder Carrie Mitchell says modern nuptials are all about breaking the rules. Here she shares a few renegade ideas they’re loving at Union & Co HQ…

Forget about a vintage Rolls – the most stylish wedding parties are being driven in vintage hackney cabs. Enter Walter and Cilla, the spruced-up vintage Fairway taxi duo available to hire for your special day from One Fare Day. Owner Gill can add extra touches to make the journey more special (who doesn’t want a glass of Champagne on the drive to the service?), and is happy to discuss your ideas. vintagetaxiedinburgh.com

1. GLITTERBOMB GLAMOUR

Sure there’s a place for subtlety but if you’re more fun and fabulous than flawless and fashionable, don’t let anyone tell you to rein it in on your wedding day. Our clients Hollie and Luke certainly didn’t. From sequinned table runners and dinosaurs dipped in glitter to confetti canons and metallic lace, theirs was a sparkling discoball of a do their guests will never forget.

2. ROUGH LUXE LOCATIONS

The gift of giving

With more than three quarters of couples living together before marriage, gift lists are no longer filled with requests for things like ironing boards and kettles. Founded in 1990, The Wedding Shop has showrooms in Chelsea and Selfridges in London, as well as in Dublin and Edinburgh, and offers a huge range of gift options including experiences and charitable donations. 25a Dundas St, EH3 6QQ, Tel: 0131 558 7755. weddingshop.com

From chapel ruins and rundown warehouses to derelict barns and muddy fields, positively scruffy venues can make for the most stunning wedding locations. It’s all about getting the right styling and the right atmosphere… which is where we come in.

3. PICNIC TABLES

Silver service is all well and good at a formal affair but for a more relaxed, laid back dining situation, pile the table high with fresh, flavourful dishes guests can help themselves to. Our friends who tied the knot at Edinburgh's Secret Herb Garden last summer had caterers Kitchen East create a sharing menu which was a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. Careful confetti With many venues banning the use of traditional paper confetti, we’ve found some eco-friendly alternatives to see the happy couple on after saying their vows • Lavender Biodegradable and smells lovely too • Bubbles Who doesn’t love bubbles? It’s easy to find multiple packs in party shops • Dried flower petals These look lovely and come in various colours if you’re trying to stick with a theme • Paper planes A cute alternative that can look great in photos – guests can write messages before folding and they’re easy to clear up afterwards too • Birdseed Best used in areas with no lurking pigeons…

• Do be creative. Create something daring with unusual ingredients; or make it personal with mini versions of your favourite dishes. • Don’t select canapés that make a mess; make sure they can be eaten with one hand and won’t go everywhere when bitten into! • Do embrace seasonality and make use of locally sourced ingredients. • Don’t assume everyone eats meat. Make sure there’s something for all your guests. • Do ensure there’s somewhere to deposit used cocktails sticks and napkins – its annoying being stuck with these. • Don’t scrimp. Guests are hungry after the ceremony and canapés help line empty tummies.

CRACKING THE

CODE

Seven experts share their top tips on how to arrive stylishly (and appropriately) dressed for a wedding

Master feminine style “This strapless Roland Mouret dress is a great option for a smart day wedding or black tie event as the length in the skirt balances out the bareness of the shoulders,” says Sarah Murray, owner of Jane Davidson. “Pretty, feminine styles, lace and pastel shades are also great but beware of flashing too much flesh. If girly isn't your thing don't be afraid to try a colourful trouser suit. Shorts are a definite no, as is anything that looks remotely bridal - ivory and floaty is for the bride only. Cream, however, can be acceptable when accessorised with another colour. Similarly, a black dress can work with accessories in this season’s colour pops.” Clockwise from top: Strapless Roland Mouret dress (main image), £1,650, janedavidson.co.uk: Margo earrings, £38, oliverbonas.com: Watch, £19.99, bonprix.co.uk; Ming Ray python box bag, £2,610, harveynichols.com; Christian Louboutin Pigalle Follies, £495, pamjenkins. co.uk; Marianna dress, £245, reiss.com; Anni Lu necklace, Biscuit.clothing; Zoe sunglasses, £65, hobbs.co.uk; Autograph wool blend coat, £149, marksandspencers.com.

Get the suit right Simon Kirby at Chester Barrie suggests choosing something different from your everyday office wear and avoiding dark colours for a formal wedding do. “A suit is always a good idea but a jacket and trouser ensemble can be just as sophisticated. A white shirt is a classic choice but pale blue, pink or cream also work well. A wedding is also a time to throw a dash of colour or a bolder patterned tie into the mix. Accessories, cufflinks, tie pin and watch should be subtle, understated and complement one another. Finally, decide if you want a pocket square – but be sure not to choose one in the same fabric and pattern as your tie. Colour is always great for a summer wedding abroad and the Chester Barrie light teal linen jacket worn with stone twill trousers is a great outfit to look effortlessly stylish.“

Make a style statement

Stand out from the crowd and follow the advice of Tamara Turnbull, stylist for Style Concierge Harvey Nichols, Edinburgh. “Mix and match spots, stripes, florals and everything in between and don’t be afraid to rock your juxtaposed look, even at a cocktail party wedding. From the patchworked ‘70s wallpaper prints from Tory Burch to the mixed florals at Diane Von Furstenberg, this is a trend to have fun with. If you’re feeling completely overwhelmed, pick one piece with multiple prints and let it do the hard work for you.” The team at Whistles agrees – it’s the season to be bold. “For a cocktail wedding a chic polka dot maxi dress accessorised with a statement earring or an outfit full of colour pops like electric blues and emerald greens is perfect.” Clockwise from top: emerald green dress, whistles.com; Amanda Wakeley FW18 maxi dress, (main image) harveynichols.com and amandawakeley.com; Lottie earrings, £22.95, biscuit.clothing; Coach Dinky with tea rose bag, £650, uk.coach.com; Gianvito Rossi leopard print pump, £700, pamjenkins.co.uk; silver and gold ring with freshwater pearl, £415 at shjgallery.com; Rixo Fedora dress, £315, janedavidson.co.uk.

EDIBLE DELIGHTS

It’s a common misconception that you need acres of land to grow your own food. Portable containers, crates or pots are a great way to grow lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, beans and Asian greens like Pak Choi. Connecting two beds with a decorative arbor also helps create a showpiece and gives vines, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, or squash, a place to climb. A lean-to greenhouse is also a great space-saving option to extend the growing season.

AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR THE URBAN GARDENER Spring marks the start of the growing season so it’s time to up your gardening game and maximise your outdoor space. Here the experts at Greenhouse People reveal how

THE ILLUSIONIST

Forming different zones with things like a small growing patch, sitting area or pebbled miniature zen garden will help create the illusion of space. Keep seating low for a cocooning effect and anchor corners with larger plants. Matching your outdoor furniture with the same décor theme in your kitchen or living room will help to blur the distinction between indoors and out. Weather-resistant mirrors can also accentuate a sense of space and reflect sunlight into shadier areas.

FEATURES

INDOOR GARDENING

An urban garden doesn’t have to be outside. Besides purifying the air in our homes, they also have great aesthetic value and retailers are now stocking a wide variety of both plants and display products such as terrariums, hanging baskets and terraces. Succulents are a great option for beginners because they require little TLC – try Echeveria with its rainbow-coloured leaves, Dudleya with its chalky powder colouring and Crassula with its braid-like geometric patterns. If you fancy a challenge, Calatheas also known as the Zebra plant for its beautiful stripped leaves, needs regular watering, misting and feeding during the growing season

HANDY HIDEAWAYS

Storing your gardening tools can be complicated in a small space. To keep your urban garden tidy, try installing a wood-cladded or rattan storage box which can be used as a bench in the summer months with the addition of a few throw pillows. A lick of pastel paint will instantly make this a statement feature.

ATTRACT WILDLIFE

Create a micro nature reserve to let your mind escape to the country. Simple additions such as bird baths, brightly-coloured flowers, log piles and bee bricks will encourage flying friends to visit you. The presence of birds, butterflies and bees will also support your ecosystem, keeping plants healthy and encourage pollination.

THE GARDENING TREND YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY IS… … creating your own ‘living wall’. Tipped as the biggest trend of 2018, it’s is an easy way to add a stylish new plant feature to your home or garden setting however big or small.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES Emily Murray reveals how Bodycamp Ibiza changed her life (in just one week)

58

TRAVEL

I

decided to spend the week before my 40th birthday at Bodycamp Ibiza for two reasons: 1) because I thought the fitness retreat’s grueling regime (plus a healthy scoop of Spanish sunshine) would help me look hotter in my House of Hackney party frock, and 2) because a load of celebrities had visited (Caroline Flack, Mel C, Lisa Snowdon, Henry Holland, etc) and made it look glamorous on Instagram. I was right on both the get-fit and the Insta-fabulous counts. Last week I came home from Bodycamp three pounds lighter, with an inch off my waist and bust, a bit of a tan and more defined arms, legs, butt and abs. Plus I’d spent my stay in a rock star villa hanging out with a Dolce & Gabbana model, a man whose job it is to fly around the world interviewing Hollywood stars, and an agent who looks after stars of stage and screen. And I’d taken lots of pretty pictures for the ‘Gram. But when I say this week changed my life, I really mean it. Here are six reasons why…

1

I LEARNED TO COOK Bodycamp super chef Ben Whale not only whipped up delicious, 80 per cent plant-based, gluten and refined-sugar-free food, he demonstrated how we could cook some of his simple dishes ourselves, and explained the science and nutritional benefit behind this way of eating. Since leaving Bodycamp I have created Thai green curry, chocolate and banana protein pancakes, coconut mango chia seed pudding, and pea and courgette fritters.

2

I FELL BACK IN LOVE WITH EXERCISE At Bodycamp getting fit is properly fun. Ex-British Military Fitness trainer Rick is a proud mullet-owner who loves firing up the bad jokes, ‘80s tunes and Arnold Schwarzenegger motivational workouts, meaning you’re too busy laughing to notice you’ve just done your 138th press-up of the day. Then there are the Baywatch beach circuits (complete with Rick’s red lifeguard jacket and his super-friendly Chihuahua), glorious hilltop hikes and hilarious air guitar sessions. Because, as Rick constantly reminded us, exercise truly is a treat.

3

I BECAME 33 YEARS YOUNGER Forget knocking off five years – in one week I rolled back more than three whole decades. How? By getting in touch with my inner child. It wasn’t just the preponderance of ‘80s classics that made me feel seven years old again, but the fact I was encouraged to let loose and do more of the stuff that made me feel joyous. And so, I swam in icy seas and swimming pools (while the weather was gorgeously sunny in April, the Ibizan water hadn’t yet got the summertime memo); told terrible

pun-based jokes and generally made a bit of a tit of myself, without worrying anyone would take the piss – they were all at it too.

4

I MADE FRIENDS FOR LIFE A Bodycamp Ibiza rule is that being judgmental of others is not allowed (neither is sneaking out to go boozing/ clubbing at Pacha FYI). Turns out that the less you judge, the easier it becomes not to judge, and the less you feel judged by others. So even though I’d never met any of my fellow Bodycampers before, by the end of the week it felt like we’d all been mates for years. The environment is so emotionally safe and supportive, you feel free to be your true self. And what better foundation for a lasting, meaningful friendship?

5

I PLANNED MY FUTURE While Bodycamp is a brilliant overhaul for the body (both inside and out), it doesn’t stop there: an important part of the schedule is taking time to evaluate your life and your relationship with yourself. I realized I was guilty of being unnecessarily harsh on myself, and learned techniques for silencing my inner critic.

TURNS OUT THAT THE LESS YOU JUDGE, THE EASIER IT BECOMES NOT TO JUDGE, AND THE LESS YOU FEEL JUDGED BY OTHERS”

6

I REDISCOVERED THE PRE-KIDS ME Perhaps the best thing about Bodycamp was spending seven whole days focusing on myself and the grown-ups around me. I’ve been a mum for more than eight years, and while it’s been incredibly rewarding, I’ve been through a number of identity crises as I’ve tried to assimilate the pre-kids me with the person whose job it is to keep two small people alive. Having this time to reestablish who I am and what matters to me was the best birthday present I could possibly have asked for. And I’ll be asking for it all over again when I’m 41… Prices start from £1500 for a week at the Body Camp with 2018 programmes running until November. For more information visit thebodycamp.com

Three skin hydrators

BEAUTY EXPERT Featuring Dominic Skinner, M·A·C Senior Artist

My top beauty tip is… Try samples of different foundation shades at home. Lighting in beauty halls isn’t great so this gives you a chance to see it in different lights.

Biggest bridal make-up trend? Glass Skin - smooth light reflecting skin that looks fresh and luminescent. Use a cream highlighter to brighter the cheek like M·A·C Cream Colour Base in Pearl and then tap a little M·A·C Mixing Medium in Shine on top with a fingertip to add that glass like finish. My beauty icon is… Olivia Wild. She’s forever changing her make-up style but it’s always her and it’s always flawless. My favourite pampering treat is… Face masks and sheet masks. I use a face mask at least three times a week and sometimes three times a day. My beauty essential is... M·A·C Prep & Prime Essential Oil. I use it daily to hydrate my skin and even add a drop into my night cream to make it richer.

HOW TO LOOK YOUR BEST FOR

THE BIG DAY

It’s the day all eyes are on the bride and groom, so it stands to reason they’d want to look their best – and possibly indulge in a little help in the run up. We’ve rounded up prettifying options worth considering to help you on your way to your most beautiful self. Don’t worry: our (subtly enhanced) lips are sealed.

6 MONTHS PRIOR

Bingo wings and muffin top? CoolSculpting is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. It’s not a weight-loss treatment but rather a sculpting procedure for those stubborn pockets of fat that no amount of diet and exercise will shift. Each procedure takes an hour and the chosen area (flanks, man boobs, tummies etc) is sucked up into the head of the machine and frozen so that the fat cells die off, resulting in permanent fat loss on that area. You’ll start to see results between the first and third month with full results showing after four months. CoolSculpting costs from £700 at the awardwinning Face & Body Clinic, 32 Alva St, EH2 4PY, Tel: 0131 226 9610, faceandbody.co.uk. If a killer pout is something you’ve always craved, fillers to enhance your natural shape might be the answer. The famed Dr Rita Rakus London cosmetic clinic now runs an exclusive monthly slot at Zen Lifestyle on Bruntsfield Place, and focuses on a less-is-more approach but book a consultation to talk things through before you take the plunge. Clinic manager and aesthetic treatment advisor Barbara Deakin advises patients “to have their initial lip enhancement at least six months in advance of the big day, and a top-up four weeks before the event.” To book a consultation, Tel: 0131 477 3535 or visit zen-lifestyle.com.

64

TRIED AND TESTED Good for... no wrinkles Wrinkles – specifically the reduction of them – are big business, so if you’re considering pre-wedding Botox make sure you do your homework to find the best practitioner in a well-respected clinic. It is, after all, a medical procedure. “Whether it’s for the bride, motherof-the-bride or bridesmaid, I’d always recommend a trial six months before the wedding,” explains Dr Nestor, one of Scotland’s most experienced Aesthetic Doctors. “This timeline gives us a chance to dial things up or down. Then, about a month before the wedding you come back for a top up.” The verdict: On first impressions alone, Dr Nestor's Medical Cosmetic Centre on Dundas Street is one of the slickest clinics in town. Private, serene and professional, you feel instantly at ease and safe in the knowledge that the team know exactly what they’re doing. Dr Nestor comes with a wealth of experience and accolades and whatever area you want treated (crows feet, forehead or frown lines), he’s quick to tell you the end goal isn’t about being motionless, it’s about keeping lines at bay. It takes about 10 painless minutes to complete the treatment on my forehead and this comes after an indepth and informative consultation. Prices start at £180 for Botox with Dr Nestor. For more information Tel: 0131 467 1450, visit drnestor.co.uk.

3-4 MONTHS PRIOR TRIED AND TESTED Good for... youthful skin What if we told you a peach flavoured drink could hold the answer to younger, plumper looking skin? Yes, really. Put your coffee aside and meet the multi award-winning daily skincare drink called Skinade. Packed with skin loving ingredients - the main one being collagen - it works to boost your own in-house collagen factory and with continued use can result in firm, radiant and youthful looking skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. The verdict: I’ve always had issues with my skin, from bad sunburn as a child; to severe and confidence-crushing acne in my teenage years; to acne-scarred, blotchy and dry skin as an adult. So given the chance to try a product claiming to help relieve some of, if not all, my skin woes, I sign straight up. The best results are said to show after 90 days but at 30 days in I see a real difference already. The main thing I notice is the hydration, my incredibly dry skin is less so and I don’t have sore hands after I wash them – a big one for me. My skin is less blotchy; my arms are usually redder that the rest of me and that’s gone; my nails feel stronger and my hair seems to have grown more than usual. It’s rather remarkable. Skinade is available from skincare professionals including The Spa at Gleneagles and Zen lifestyle. For other stockists visit skinade.com.

If crooked teeth are your bugbear, there’s an easy and relatively quick fix to put a smile back on your face and get picture perfect. It’s called CFast and it’s available in Edinburgh thanks to Dr Biju, one of the UK’s most experienced cosmetic dentists and founder of the CFast technique (Cosmetically Focused Adult Straight Teeth). “I love helping bring out the best in someone’s smile,” he says. “It often changes their life. So many people don’t like their teeth but haven’t fixed them because the procedure is too expensive, takes too long or involves a lot of drilling. CFast uses revolutionary techniques to achieve straight, white teeth in as little as three months. I’m honoured to have dedicated my working life to creating beautiful smiles people can be proud of.” To find out if CFast is the way to a perfect smile for you, book a free consultation with Dr Biju at Dr Nestor Medical Centre, 53 Dundas St, EH3 6RS. For further information, Tel: 0131 322 1532, email biju@cfastresults. co.uk or visit drbijusmiles.com. This is a good time to think about hair too. Whether you’re fine tuning your colour or considering hair extensions for the Big Day make sure you give yourself enough time to see what you like and what you don’t. If thicker hair is something you’re after, we’d recommend Balmain Hair Extensions as a longer lasting alternative to clip-ins. Made of 100 per cent human hair they add colour, length and volume. Everyone wants a youthful glow and there’s a way of achieving one with Caci. With more than 20 years of medical research, Caci technology was developed in the USA and the facials use micro-current impulses to lift and tone face and neck muscles, improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines. It’s pretty much a workout for your face but, just like a fitness blitz, it takes dedication and commitment to make lasting changes. While you can see instant results after just one treatment, block bookings are recommended at least six weeks in advance of the big day. Caci non-surgical solutions are available at NOW by One Spa, Tel: 0131 221 7777, nowbyonespa.com Finally, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can book things like nail appointments, waxing, hair trims and fake tans last minute. This is the time to get out the diary and book ahead so you get the dates and times that you want on your final week. Good luck!

5 REASONS

YOU NEED TO GO TO...

HIDDEN DOOR Edinburgh’s Hidden Door festival packs 10 days of music, art, theatre, film and partying into the city’s disused buildings – and this year it’s taking on two Leith spaces across the road from one another. Here, David Pollock picks out some musical highlights.

1

GWENNO

A member of feminist vocal trio the Pipettes, Gwenno Saunders has gathered large amounts of acclaim for her two solo albums - 2015’s Y Dydd Olaf, which was sung entirely in her native Welsh and Cornish, and this year’s gorgeous, dream-like Le Kov (‘A Place of Memory’), an all-Cornish record. “Now I have a son and I speak Cornish with him,” Saunders told The Quietus. “It’s a tool, isn’t it? And if you’ve got a couple of tools you may as well use them all.” Friday 25 May.

NADINE SHAH

2 68

Raw and expressive, Nadine Shah is a singer and songwriter from the North of England whose affecting and tuneful indie-pop tracks belie the depth of personal engagement going on below the surface. Over her three albums – last year’s Holiday Destination was the most recent – she explores topics including mental health, suicide, feminism and the relationship of the West to more oppressive countries. Alongside Gwenno, Honeyblood and Dream Wife, she tops an all-female opening line-up curated by The List on Friday 25 May.

DISTANT VOICES: NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS A special recording project created by Vox Liminis, Distant Voices: Not Known at This Address is an album which pairs songwriters with people who have had experience of the Scottish criminal justice system, from prisoners to prison staff and researchers to social workers. This evening of music will feature solo sets from contributors Emma Pollock, C Duncan and Admiral Fallow (playing as a trio), before all come together to perform the album. Tuesday 29 May.

DANIEL AVERY Daniel Avery is one of the most exciting techno producers working in the world right now, not just because his DJ sets are essential, but because of his ability to craft a crunching and essential dancefloor track which is filled with melody and its own distinctive spirit. It’s why his artist albums Drone Logic and the recent Song for Alpha have been such successes, and his late night appearance on Saturday 26 May will create an intense party atmosphere to close the penultimate day.

4

YOUNG FATHERS

No party which aspires to be definitive of Leith could be complete without an appearance by Young Fathers, the group who recorded the work which made them famous a stone’s throw away. Winners of the 2014 Mercury Prize for their debut album Dead and the previous year’s Scottish Album of the Year award for the extended EP Tape Two, their current album Cocoa Sugar is their most exciting, confident and confrontational yet. “Hidden Door brings a large cross section of the creative scene together,” said Hidden Door’s creative director David Martin, “and it’s inspiring to see such a range of new talent in Scotland dedicated to creating a mesmerising and unforgettable experience for our audiences.”

Hidden Door Festival 2018 is at Leith Theatre and the Old State Cinema, Edinburgh, from 25 May to 03 June. hiddendoorblog.org

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK We check out three new arrivals on Edinburgh’s restaurant scene

YAMATO Jo Morris discovers the best fish in town

I

was a virgin until I was 38. A sushi virgin that is. Until that point, the mere suggestion of raw fish had me in paroxysms. RAW FISH? I finally saw the light when, on our second date, my partner took me to Sushiya (where I decided my usual RAW FISH? skit probably wouldn’t go down terribly well). Fast forward eight years and I am fully converted to sushi. I love it. Sushi takeaway is our big treat at home and Sushiya remains one of my favourite restaurants. The only down side is that it’s small. Kanpai, its sister restaurant, opened in 2011 solving the seating dilemma with a larger restaurant and the same impeccable sushi. Now Yamato has been added to the mix. It offers the same great combination of modern, relaxed dining with superb sushi, and I’m delighted to confirm that my old favourites, sashimi, nigiri and maki are just as good here

“POPULAR IN JAPAN, YELLOWTAIL IS THE BEST FISH I’VE EVER EATEN”

as the other two establishments. Far bigger news for me is the discovery of yellowtail; the best fish I’ve ever eaten. Found in the Pacific and popular in Japan, yellowtail is a meaty white fish that is new on the menu and served cooked. We usually stick to raw fish hark at me when we ‘do’ sushi but I’m so pleased we made an exception this time. One upon a long time ago, I travelled around Australia, a fresh-faced graduate with absolutely no clue about life. I had one giant experience after another, but one of my lasting memories is of seafood; eating freshly caught barbecued fish. We saw the fisherman land it, prep it and cook it, and we ate it watching the sunset. After a lifetime of overcooked tasteless cod, here was the realisation that not all fish is equal; it was truly delicious and it’s taken almost 30 years to find something to match it. And here it is, in a sushi restaurant. Daft as it may sound, I’ve never thought of sushi restaurants as fish restaurants although they obviously are. Yamato is a game changer for me. I would dine there every day if I could. Hold the sushi (RAW FISH?), I’m yellowtail all the way. 11 Lochrin Terr, EH3 9QJ, Tel: 0131 466 5964, yamatosushiedinburgh.co.uk

RANSACKED BLACK OVEN Holly Tracey discovers Persian street food in Newington

FINN AND BEAR Lucy Cruickshank checks out The Pantry’s little sister bistro

iant waffles, crispy rashers and oozing egg benny… The Pantry has always been one of my favourite spots for brunch in Edinburgh, so I was delighted to hear they’d opened a third venue, Finn & Bear on The Shore. Already au fait with the group’s brunch board, we wanted to see what they had up their sleeves for dinner. If you’re a cheese-lover, you’ve come to the right place. We shared the ‘big baked cheese with big fat fruits and bread to scoop’ (market price) and it was utterly delicious - just make sure you order extra bread to soak up the never-ending pool of molten cheese. For mains we opted for two plates; sticky glazed pork cheek with roasted celeriac puree, £7, and pan fried gnudi (gnocchi-like dumplings made with ricotta cheese), confit cherry tomatoes, salsa verde oil and shaved parmesan, £9.50. Both dishes were beautifully simple, but packed a flavoursome punch. Let me be frank: the puddings here are downright gluttonous so in keeping with the theme we ordered the most indulgent puds we could find; the chocolate pot with amaretto cream and cashew brittle and peanut butter and orange cheesecake with homemade granola (both £7.50). They didn’t disappoint. I’ll be back soon. 58 The Shore, EH6 6RB, Tel: 0131 555 4636, finnandbear.co.uk

ansacked Black Oven is an exciting addition to the Newington neighbourhood offering Persian street food. You can order breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes all day long, with the option to take-out, ideal for those on the go, or sit-in at the communalstyle dining tables. The menu boasts warming, lightly spiced dishes with wood fired flat breads and spreads including a daily special hummus and pesto, and an impressive array of vegan and vegetarian dishes too. If you’re not sure where to begin then the sharing board, £12, which comes with a selection of breads, olives, spreads and falafel is a good place to start. We kick things off with a couple of mint lemonade botanical punches electing to add our choice of spirit (gin) for £5.50 and follow up with the baked sourdough nachos with baba ganoush and Persian cream cheese, £5.50. So much better than your standard fare, the ‘nachos’ are wood fired flat breads and, crucially, stand up to the test when you go in for a second scoop. Eager for more, we order a falafel kebab, £8.10, accompanied by a gram flour roti, choice of spread and salad (spinach, lentil and avocado). Across the table, it’s a sourdough flatbread wrap with salmon, labneh, dill and capers, £6. A word on the menu; with each culinary option, there are decisions to be made from the style of your roti, wrap filling, spread to accompany, and salad. Choice, of course, isn’t a bad predicament to find yourself in, especially with so many enticing options.

...OR DO SUNDAY LUNCH Laura Wood discovers that Sunday is the day of fine dining

I’ve never properly been inside the Caley,” proclaims my almost 70-year-old mother as we enter the revolving doors and into the foyer of the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh. She’s Edinburgh born and bred and as familiar with the landmark building as most locals, but she’s probably not alone in her statement. So, it’s a rare and special occasion that we find ourselves being shown to our table in the hotel’s first floor fine dining restaurant, The Pompadour by Galvin. If it weren’t for the view of the castle, we could have been transported back to a dining room in the Palace of Versailles. We’re here for Sunday lunch; no ordinary Sunday lunch either. At The Pompadour, opening for lunch on Sundays is a new thing. It’s also a fine dining affair and a brilliant opportunity for a taster of the great things that come out of this kitchen. Spearheaded by Michelin star chefs the Galvin brothers and created by head chef Dan Ashmore, lunch is a very reasonable fixed price of £29.50 for three courses from a select menu – with amuse bouche, canapes and a pre order Bloody Mary also included. And it’s good, in its entirety. The food is French-inspired and cooked with a confidence that lets the ingredients do the talking. A bright green plate of wild garlic risotto and Burford Brown egg tastes much better than it looks. North Berwick crab and squid linguine is enjoyed with a very lovely, sommelier recommended Treixadura from Ribeiro. For mains, a slow cooked Cumbrian pork belly is balanced with hispi cabbage and butterbeans, and the plentiful rump of Perthshire beef with fondant potato and

roast carrot (it is Sunday after all) is beef at its best. Lunch on this day successfully takes mum out of her comfort zone and into a culinary world of new flavours, ingredients and presentation; it takes me straight back to my happy place from first mouthful to the last spoonful of a sublime salted caramel souffle. The price point, along with the venue, service and food makes the Pompadour by Galvin a very fine option for Sunday lunch. It may not be my regular haunt but it’s one I’d happily return to with another special occasion in mind, or when I feel like Sunday should be a day for fine dining. Lunch served Sundays 1-3pm. and telling the life story of a family’s loved one in a dignified and authentic way is a privilege and responsibility.

HOW DOES YOUR DAY START? My alarm goes off at 7.30am and if I’m lucky, the boys come for a cuddle. I’m pretty slow in the mornings, unlike my husband who is full of beans. I have coffee, feed the cat and fish, and on weekdays make breakfast and lunches for the boys. After the school run I eat, check e-mails, then practice yoga for an hour before lunch. I then start writing wedding or funeral ceremonies, depending what I have on.

WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER WORK? I collect my kids from school and if it’s nice, we go to the park to play football. I’m extremely lucky that my husband Lloyd is a wonderful cook. He makes us lovely meals; fish with green vegetables, veggie chilli or a super salad. Photo by Edward Brooke

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I live in Granton with my husband Lloyd and our two boys Harris and Lachlan.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR ROLE... I work as a Celebrant with Humanist Society Scotland conducting weddings, naming ceremonies and funerals. I applied to train because I thought it would be a wonderful, diverse and rewarding role, which it is, and I haven’t looked back since. As a wedding celebrant, I provide couples with a personal wedding ceremony (we write it together) and officiate on the day. I build a relationship with my couples, it’s very important that they’re happy with their ceremony and it’s a true reflection of what they want. WHAT’S YOUR FIRST PRIORITY WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT A WEDDING? I arrive at least an hour early (I’m so grateful to Google maps) to check

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN 10 YEARS TIME? I hope I’ll still be conducting weddings, naming ceremonies and funerals with Humanist Society Scotland, as well as spending time with family and friends, travelling more and continuing to learn and grow.

in with the wedding co-ordinator. Then I talk with the bride, groom and wedding party before getting started. BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? It’s an honour to help couples create their wedding ceremony; witnessing everything as it unfolds on the day, while surrounded by love from their family and friends, is wonderful. Similarly, conducting a funeral
