THEATRE

There’s a bit of celebrity interest to this year’s Edinburgh International Festival programme, with Sir Ian McKellen (Assembly Hall, 22-25 August) bringing his 80-date tour of the UK in celebration of his 80th birthday to Edinburgh, featuring excerpts of his classic stage and screen roles in Shakespeare, Lord of the Rings and more. Elsewhere, Stephen Fry’s Mythos (Festival Theatre, 19-25 August) is a live performance of his book on Ancient Greece in three installments – Gods, Heroes and Men. It’s seven and a half hours in total but you don’t have to see all three shows in one day. Elsewhere, in collaboration with the National Theatre of Scotland, Edinburgh International Festival present the stage adaptation of Scottish Makar Jackie Kay’s memoir of an adopted, mixed-race girl growing up in 1970s Glasgow and searching for her heritage, Red Dust Road (Royal Lyceum, 14-18 August). On the Fringe itself, a couple of the many hundreds of theatre stand-outs include Fags, Bags and Mags (Underbelly George Square, 01-26 August), the stage debut of Sanjeev Kohli’s award-winning Radio 4 sitcom about a Pakistani corner shop in Glasgow, and Square Go (Summerhall, until 25 August), the hit comedy about two Scottish schoolboys preparing for a fight after school. This year’s cast includes Daniel Portman, aka Game of Thrones’ Podrick.

7

COMEDY

Eddie Izzard

Although it’s listed under the theatre section of the guide, no comedy fan is going to pass by Eddie Izzard’s Expectations of Great Expectations (Assembly George Square Studios, 07-25 August), a work in progress show in which Izzard introduces audiences to his own take on Charles Dickens’ classic. Another comedian making a less long-awaited return to the Fringe – she only missed out on appearing last year – is Desiree Burch (Heroes @ the Hive, until 25 August), whose show Desiree’s Coming Early! arrives off the back of a year where she’s been an ever-more-ubiquitous presence on television. It’s hard to turn down any chance to recommend the excellent Kieran Hodgson (Pleasance Courtyard, 14-25 August), who is reviving all four of his previous storytelling stand-up shows – ’75, French Exchange, Lance and Maestro – from limited three-performance runs of each. See them all if you can. Fringe mainstay Josie Long (The Stand, 01-25 August) is also back with her new show Tender.

BOOKS

Arundhati Roy © Mayk Austen Soofi

The highlight of a typically overflowing programme at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Charlotte Square is bound to be the special appearance of the author of The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy (19 August), who will be discussing her new book of essays on Indian life My Seditious Heart with the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Other stand-outs include Everything but the Girl singer Tracey Thorn (19 August) discussing her homage to suburbia Another Planet; Fresh Meat actor Zawe Ashton (24 August) discussing her autobiography Character Breakdown; the poet Lemn Sissay (24 August) presenting his memoir My Name is Why; and Edinburgh poet Jenny Lindsay (20 August) talking about her new collection of feminist work This Script.

8

MUSIC

CABARET

A hit at last year’s festival, there are few shows closer to the spirit of cabaret than Little Death Club (Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows, 03-24 August), whose host Bernie Dieter – also known for his work with La Clique – brings a debauched, Weimar Berlin-style show to the capital. Or if you want to take in some magic, try the ‘magical prank show’ Troublemaker by James Phelan (Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 26 August); we’re recommending him purely on the basis he’s Paul Daniels’ nephew. For a bit of closer-to-home fun, meanwhile, try Colonel Mustard and Friends (Gilded Balloon at the Museum, 06 to 25 August [not all dates]), with comedy, music and spoken word guests hosted by John McMustard of much-loved Scottish band Colonel Mustard & the Dijon 5.

Jarvis Cocker © Bradley Wood

Neneh Cherry © Clare Shilland

EIF continues its programme of first rate contemporary music, including Neneh Cherry, Teenage Fanclub, Sharon Van Etten and Jarvis Cocker (all Leith Theatre, 10, 16, 21 and 22 August). As well as being one of the festival’s finest theatre venues, Summerhall’s Nothing Ever Happens Here strand also presents some outstanding local, national and international artists, including Siobhan Wilson (07 August), Kathryn Joseph’s stunning From When I Wake show (13-15 August) and art-rock tribute act Start to End’s performance of Taylor Swift’s 1989 (16 August).

FEATURES

What excites you about the role of Peter Gynt? I always wanted to play Peer Gynt, in this case Peter Gynt. It’s just one of the great big parts to play, and I think it’s just completely transfixing to watch – especially as we see one man’s entire life play out on stage, and I think, in turn see our own lives in his story. And I also think this play’s a contemporary epic, and we don’t see a lot of those on our stages anymore. Peter is on stage for nearly all three hours of the production. How do you prepare for such a demanding role? Well I drink a lot of water! Also, luckily, because of the performances that I’ve done, things like The James Plays with the National Theatre of Scotland, the Young Chekhov series at Chichester Festival Theatre, and then the National Theatre’s revival of Angels in America – I’m used to doing these sorts of novel, epic pieces – but none of them quite compare to this.

JAMES MCARDLE

THE GLASGOW-BORN ACTOR ON TAKING ON THE EPIC ROLE OF PETER GYNT IN DAVID HARE’S SCOTTISH VERSION OF AN ICONIC IBSEN PLAY

This is your second time performing at the Edinburgh International Festival, following The James Plays which were a big hit in 2014. How do you feel about coming back? I’ve been dying to get back. I loved performing at the International Festival. It feels like one of the last great places where you can see genuine artistic endeavours, and I think it’s so amazing for Scotland to have the whole world come to us to see culture from all over the place. That’s what I love about it. Peter Gynt relocates Ibsen’s hero from Norway to Scotland. How does it feel to bring this Scottish version of the story to your home country? That was always really important to me. I was then very keen to have an authentically Scottish cast in our production like the great Ann Louise Ross, the Dame of Dundee Rep. It’s a great European classic play, performed by Scottish people, and I’m so looking forward to bringing it back home for Scottish audiences to see.

I-ON READER OFFER

Peter Gynt is playing at the Festival Theatre from 01-10 August. i-on readers can get 50% off tickets using promo code ION50 when booking online at eif.co.uk (max four tickets per performance).

e can’t vouch for the weather but the line-up for this year’s Summer Sessions is sizzling. Taking place across a string of August dates in Edinburgh and Glasgow, the gigs feature some huge names and incredible local talent. Kicking off the action in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens, Florence+The Machine play consecutive nights on 07 and 08 August, undoubtedly both filled with the frontwoman’s infectious energy and epic voice. Next up is arguably Scotland’s greatest musical export Primal Scream featuring Johnny Marr on 10 August followed by Glasgow synth pop trio Chvrches on 11 August. Bringing his irresistible ballads and banter with him, local lad Lewis Capaldi will wow the crowds on 13 and 14 August, then 15 August sees ’90s indie icons James take to the stage. Come Friday, you’ll have a dilemma – catch The Courteneers in Edinburgh or head across to Bellahouston Park where post-punk legends The Cure will open Glasgow’s Summer Sessions, fresh from their career-defining performance at Glastonbury. Support comes from Scottish postrock aficionados Mogwai and Glasgow favourites The Twilight Sad in their biggest ever hometown show. Staying in Glasgow, Saturday 17 August sees rock gods Foo Fighters tearing up the stage on a bill that also features Slaves and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, while back in Edinburgh on 18 August, ’80s legends Madness bring their skatinged pop to the crowds. And finally, closing night on 25 August is headlined by band-of-the-moment The 1975, alongside local heroes Twin Atlantic in what promises to be an incredible homecoming show. Sadly Saturday’s session is already sold out so grab tickets while you can for the other dates at smmrsessions.com.

FASHION

WE MIGHT NOT BE KNOWN FOR BEING AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF FASHION BUT LOOK AT A LITTLE CLOSER AT SCOTLAND’S SARTORIAL CREDENTIALS AND YOU’LL FIND SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS HERITAGE BRANDS AS WELL AS A WHOLE CROP OF HOT DESIGNERS AND MAKERS. HERE’S THE BRANDS WORTH BRAGGING ABOUT…

JOHNSTONS OF ELGIN It may have been going for two centuries but this luxury wool and cashmere brand has its finger firmly on the pulse. Originally founded in 1797 by Alexander Johnston, the family-run business pioneered the Scottish wool industry and was the first to introduce the weaving of vicuna and cashmere to the country. The brand still operates from family-owned mills in Elgin and Hawick where skilled craftsmen and women take time and care painstakingly dyeing, spinning, weaving and finishing each garment on site. Under the direction of forward-thinking creative director Alan Scott, the company made its debut at London Fashion Week in 2018 marking a new beginning for the brand as a serious contender in the luxury fashion market. The AW19 collection for men and women features versatile and stylish knitwear, jackets, coats, stoles and scarves inspired by modern architectural forms with flashes of bold colour and vivid patterns. Earlier this year, the brand opened its flagship store on Edinburgh’s Multrees Walk where you can browse the collections in style. johnstonsofelgin.com

STRATHBERRY

HAMILTON & INCHES Known in Edinburgh as the place to go for fine jewellery or luxury watches, Hamilton & Inches is also Scotland’s leading silversmith with inhouse workshops where talented designers and master craftspeople meticulously create the most stylish silver jewellery using time-honoured tools and techniques. With a Royal Warrant and rich heritage, the brand dates back to 1866 but with a female CEO at the helm for the first time in the brand’s 150-year history, Hamilton & Inches is looking forward to an exciting future. Recently appointed CEO, Victoria Houghton, is setting her sights on doubling turnover within the next five years, leading a new era and fresh approach for the brand. Hamilton & Inches silver rings, earrings, necklaces and cuffs are priced from £80. hamiltonandinches.com

Launched in 2013 by Edinburgh couple Leeanne and Guy Hundleby who found inspiration while travelling the artisanal leather regions of Spain, this luxury leather brand blends an inherently Scottish spirit with an international outlook. Made in Spain but headquartered in an Edinburgh townhouse, Strathberry’s collection of leather goods are handmade using the highest quality materials to achieve the clean lines and geometric purity that is integral to the brand’s aesthetic, along with its signature metal bar closure. From £255 at strathberry.com.

STEWART CHRISTIE Thanks to that outdated shortbread tin imagery which tends to prevail, tweed and tartan can get a bad rep but step through the doors of the Stewart Christie showroom on Queen Street and you’ll quickly realise that this Scottish tailor offers something far more interesting than your typical formalwear. Creative director and co-owner Vixy Rae is a local lass with a background in streetwear who took the helm of the 300-year-old brand in 2015 and quickly set about bringing it into the 21st century. The result is a clever amalgamation of Scottish heritage with a thoroughly modern outlook – think supermodels rocking tartan trews, bright young things in bespoke tweed suits and country attire worn with seriously urban attitude. stewartchristie.com

BRAND OF THE MONTH Cecilie Copenhagen

WHAT IS IT? A Danish fashion brand known for their signature prints.

WHERE DO YOU GET IT? Jane Davidson, 52 Thistle Street, Edinburgh.

WHY WE RATE IT... Cecilie Copenhagen’s unique designs and casual cuts are perfect holiday wear. The signature prints are inspired by traditional Keffiyeh scarfs and are the backbone to the label’s cult status. When founder Cecilie Jorgensen launched her first collection, she was approached by 500 retailers worldwide but she has retained the exclusivity of the brand by handpicking just a few global stockists. We’re lucky to have one of them in Edinburgh.

LAURA BOND

FOUNDER OF A NEW JEWELLERY BRAND SPECIALISING IN THE ‘CURATED EAR’. What exactly is the curated ear? It’s a multiple earpiercing trend. Celebrities like Blake Lively and Zoe Kravitz rock the look. What was the inspiration behind your brand? I fell in love with the idea after getting my rook and daith (two areas of cartilage in the ear) pierced in New York. They had the most beautiful choice of earrings in solid gold and gemstones in the studio and when I got home to Edinburgh, I realised it was hard to find anything of the same quality here. What makes your jewellery unique? I specialise in delicate huggie hoops and tiny studs crafted in solid 14k gold and sterling silver. Instead of real gemstones, the earrings are adorned with the highest quality cubic zirconia crystals and Swarovski crystal to keep the pieces affordable, prices start from £8.

The wear-anywhere jumpsuit, £69.50, M&S Collection

How would you describe your signature style? I’d say Laura Bond is unique, stylish and a little bit bad ass. What’s your must-have piece from the collection? If pushed I’d have to say the halo crystal huggie in solid 14k gold. Its 10 bezel set crystals mean it catches the light and sparkles at any angle.

MYSTYLE

Andrew Brookes THE CREATIVE MENSWEAR DESIGNER AND TAILOR ON THREE PIECE SUITS, WHITE TRAINERS AND THE WARDROBE MUST-HAVE EVERY MAN NEEDS

JOINING THE FAMILY BUSINESS My father had a successful gentleman’s outfitter business in Falkirk so tailoring is in my blood. I literally grew up in the workshop, working with him after school and every Saturday. I left school at 17, when my father was 70, so it was a natural progression for me to take on the business and work with him until he retired. He taught me everything there is to know about old school classic tailoring. BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT Launching my own label a few years ago. I’d always wanted to create an eponymous line and now that we’ve created Andrew Brookes Tailoring in George Street, Edinburgh, there’s no looking back. MY INSPIRATION The Scottish countryside and different European landscapes inspire me. I also love watching old movies and seeing the classic styles from the halcyon eras of the ’50s and ’60s - we reimagine them for today with a more modern, contemporary feel to tailoring. SIGNATURE STYLE I like soft, deconstructed tailoring. I wear an unlined jacket with a full canvas chest piece to give it shape. I prefer shirts with big Italian collars paired with dark blue custom denim jeans and all white Common Projects trainers.

ON CASUALWEAR I’m classically trained but I wanted to create more of a lifestyle menswear brand by introducing Scotland’s first collection of customisable denim, polo shirts, T-shirts and accessories. WARDROBE MUST-HAVES Every man needs a navy blue blazer-style jacket. If you only ever invest in one quality tailored item, this is it. You can wear it with a pair of well-fitted jeans or chinos in blue or cream. STYLE ICONS I love the way Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli puts things together effortlessly. I also love the style of actor Stanley Tucci. He has great fashion sense and sticks to a stylish template of classic shapes and layers, impeccably tailored three-piece suits and separates in black, light grey or navy blue. LOCAL PLACES TO SHOP Loake Shoemakers on Frederick Street do beautiful crafted leather shoes and brogues. ON THE FUTURE Our plan is to take the brand to Glasgow and Manchester. We’d also love to go international with a studio presence in New York and Tokyo. Ultimately, we’re striving to be the tailor of choice in custom and affordable tailored menswear. INTERIOR DESIGNER BEA CHRISTIE ON FINDING HER DREAM HOUSE IN THE MEADOWS AND LEARNING TO LOVE OPEN PLAN LIVING Photography Cat Thomson

38

INTERIORS

FROM AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE, WE ALL NEED TO LIVE IN LESS SPACE WITH LESS STUFF”

THE HUNT

Having recently moved from London and after trawling the internet, attending loads of viewings, and driving around aspirational areas, I was feeling a bit lost. Then I discovered one estate agent who didn’t advertise on the most popular property websites and after one search this property popped up. I remember seeing a picture of the front door and knowing straight away it was the one.

THE FIND

On our first visit to the house, I was jaw-tothe-floor in love. It might not have matched our requirements on paper but I could really imagine living in it and that felt amazing. All the things you think you need or want aren’t always really what

39

INTERIORS

you need or want. Sometimes if you open up to other possibilities, more than you could have ever hoped for turns up... buying this house really helped me understand that.

THE HISTORY

Originally, the house was an artist’s studio. We managed to find out lots about the history of the building, from friendly neighbours, books and we even have some photos of how it looked in 1880 when it was built. It feels important to maintain its character and heritage, and in some ways do as little as possible.

THE LIVING SPACE

Having one big open space rather than defined rooms can be quite challenging. I’ve created a kids’ area,

40

using shelving to mark out the space and I have used furniture to define the ‘sitting’ room and TV zone. Open plan living is a lifestyle, you all need to be able to use the space for your own needs while sharing it the whole time. It means you need to constantly consider other people and communicate - skills which are increasingly important in this day and age.

THE SNUG

The main change we have made is to add a room downstairs to create a spare room and home office. This has made the space work for our needs and created a gorgeous snug room that works in contrast to the wide, open main space. When we bought it, there was an existing shell, I added a wall, a door, electricity and lighting. Then we transformed the inside with storage, a desk and a sofa bed. I painted it bright pink which I love... I wonder if it’s me stamping my strong feminist mark on the space I share with so many boys. I live with my husband and our three young sons.

INTERIORS

THE KITCHEN

I love to cook and the people who lived here before us had put in a fantastic kitchen. All we had to do was reconfigure a few bits to make it an awesome place to entertain and create yummy food. The industrial feel suits the space and I love it. The big low hanging lights help create a sense of division. And the zinc worktops are really resilient and age well.

THE DECOR

My interior style is totally eclectic. I follow what I love; if something excites me I go with it. It can be easy to get too bogged down in rules and the fear of getting it wrong. We are all scared of that, even interior designers. We are all inherently creative, but many of us have been conditioned to think we’re not. I love strong colours, so in the main space, I have white walls and lots of furniture and accessories with bright colours. This is the same as the bathroom, which is white with a turquoise bath. Then the other small rooms are little bursts of bright or deep colour, this is to balance out the big bright main space. If a space is quite dark and there is no hope of any natural light, I am a big fan of embracing this and using darker tones can have a really cosy effect.

THE TAKEAWAY

My advice is to slow down, try to resist the pull to get it all done immediately and to worry about what anyone else thinks. Gather all your ideas in one place, and if it still feels good to you, then be brave and go for it. This often leads to great things. In my work, I love supporting people to creep out of their comfort zone, really tune into what they love, and work out the difference between what they think they want and need versus what they actually want and need. From an environmental perspective, we all need to live in less space with less stuff, and I think we should all be striving for this and supporting the next generations do this in a way that feels good. I constantly challenge myself and my family to do the same. To find out more about Bea Christie Interior Design, visit beachristie.co.uk.

GEBERIT TALKS TO… EMILY MURRAY FROM THE PINK HOUSE Emily Murray is the award-winning interiors expert, founder and editor of the iconic ‘Pink House’ and author of Pink House Living.

Edinburgh born and bred, Emily is renowned for her love of all things pink. Here Emily sits down with premium bathroom designer Geberit, to talk interior inspiration and her quest to break the loo taboo…

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR INTERIORS STYLE AND WHERE YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM… For me, interiors is all about creating an environment that reflects your personality and makes you smile when you walk into a room. Personally, I’m a huge fan of pink (you’d never have guessed!), so I like to incorporate pink into every room I design, whether sparingly or in spades. I think my style can be summed up with four Ps: Pretty, Punky, Personality and of course Pink! Nearly every room I renovate has to have these four elements or it doesn’t feel properly ‘me’. It’s the mixture of opposing styles, plenty of colour and a decent dollop of eclecticism that brings the rooms I design to life – because, like people, these are spaces full of contradictions, that work together to form a complete whole. Depending on the way I want to feel while I’m in a room, I’ll choose a particular shade of a certain colour –

usually green, blue or pink, and build up from there. I’ll often design a room around a wow-factor décor item – like a fabulous painting, gorgeous rug or some sensational tiles – and work outwards. I also like to add a bit of black to most rooms, to ground them, and a touch of bling (polished brass is my current favourite metal), to lift them up. When it comes to using pink, I tend to use paler pinks or hot neons, or best of all, a combination of them both! I get inspiration (pinkspiration?) from hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as travel and fashion. Obviously, this means I have to go on regular trips to fabulous locations, ideally ones that don’t allow children. At least that’s what I tell the Pink House Husband: “Sorry, but it’s for work, darling!”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH GEBERIT I agreed to work with Geberit because I know their beautifully designed products are of the highest quality, and they have a genuine commitment to sustainability. As part of my partnership I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of sensory design and the part Geberit plays to help us live happier, healthier, more mindful lives. It’s been fascinating to learn about the design process, and how every element of each product has been designed with at least one of our five senses in mind. And now, as one of their brand ambassadors, I’m helping to spread the word about why Geberit’s products can help make your bathroom experience smell, feel, sound and look better than ever before.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT GEBERIT? I’m obsessed by their AquaClean shower toilets – especially the Sela – which is designed by renowned London-based architect and product designer Christoph Behling. The way its WhirlSpray technology uses a unique oscillating spray to make you feel properly clean with the touch of a remote control button is nothing short of a game changer on so many levels. Plus, you can personally programme the toilet to adjust the temperature and pressure of the water to suit you exactly. This wonder loo even has a super-quiet flush and built-in low level orientation light that guides you to the toilet in the night without your having to turn on a brighter light thereby waking yourself up fully. It comes in seven colour options, including a neon pink! When it comes to bathrooms, everyone’s happy to chat about pretty taps, rolltop baths and lovely lighting, but no-one really talks about toilets, despite the fact that this is the main reason we use the littlest room. I’m all about breaking what I call the ‘loo taboo’ – the fact is that having a toilet that makes you feel good,

is easy to clean (thanks to its rimless ceramic pan), looks good (Behling has designed ranges for luxury watch manufacturer Tag Heuer – I love my Tag watch) and even helps you sleep is more important than anything else, so we SHOULD be talking toilets!

HOW HAVE YOU TAKEN INSPIRATION FROM GEBERIT’S SENSORY DESIGN APPROACH?

having a remote-controlled loo and ‘not having to use toilet paper’, and I’m loving the fact that we’ll have a toilet that will enhance the freshness of the room instead of detracting from it. I’m also giving extra consideration to the room’s overall design – I’m thinking smooth plaster walls, underfloor heating, tactile taps and lots of daylight – to ensure any visitor to the room is treated to a calming retreat from the craziness of modern life.

I’m guilty of being that person who thought more about the wallpaper than the practicalities when I designed my last bathroom. But this time, as I’ve devised the design for the shower room that’s being built in The Pink House over the next few months, thanks to Geberit I’ve realised the importance of planning the room with my family’s wellbeing in mind.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO INCORPORATE SENSORY DESIGN INTO YOUR BATHROOM? I’m installing an AquaClean Sela toilet! My kids are so excited at the idea of

TRAVEL

GOING WILD CARRIE MITCHELL GETS A TRUE TASTE OF THE WILDERNESS IN SCOTLAND’S COOLEST LITTLE CABIN Photography: Department Two and Heather Birnie

I

t all started with an old newspaper clipping stuffed in the wallet of the guy who would later become my husband. The crumpled picture of a man taking a bath outside a wooden cabin in a rusty old tub was (bizarrely) one of his most treasured possessions. Unfolding it gingerly the first time we met, he explained that he carried it around because he couldn’t think of a better place to be – he wanted to be that guy in that moment. Fast forward 15 years and there I am, googling Scottish cabins looking for the perfect rustic escape for us to spend a few nights after our wedding. The second I saw an image of the wood-fired hot tub at Glen Dye, I knew I’d found the place. Nestled in the forest just outside Banchory in Aberdeenshire (just two hours drive from Edinburgh), The Saw Mill offers the most authentic wilderness experience on the historic estate, which started welcoming guests earlier this year. Owners, Charlie and Caroline Gladstone, have lovingly and stylishly converted the estate’s original buildings into chic cabins and cottages, with woodburning stoves, colourful eclectic décor and every home comfort you could possibly imagine (seriously, there’s record players, velvet sofas, faux fur throws, piles of carefully chosen books and vinyl, custom-made toiletries and candles, a welcome hamper packed with local produce, marshmallows for toasting and a character-filled guidebook personally written by Charlie). But the point of this place isn’t just to lie back and relax, it’s to get stuck in chopping wood, building fires, exploring the hills and cooking outdoors over hot coals – and it is 100 per cent up our street.

46

Within minutes of our arrival, I’m making an Aperol spritz in a Glen Dye branded enamel mug while my new husband is filling that outdoor tub and lighting the fire. By the time we’ve listened to a couple of records (Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Pink Moon by Nick Drake, in case you’re interested - the Gladstones apparently have flawless taste in music as well as interiors), the water in the hot tub has reached the perfect temperature. Slipping in, we lay back and properly take in our surroundings for the first time – we’re in a bath, next to a roaring fire, in the middle of a forest, under a clear night sky, by a stream weaving its way through our very own little

EDINBURGH’S HIDDEN GEMS In search of sanctuary… by Louise Dickins

“E camp. It couldn’t be more perfect if I’d made it up. When we begin to turn prune-like, we finally concede we should get out and eat something so we throw a couple of steaks on the barbecue then eat by candlelight before all that fresh air gets too much and we head to bed. The remodelled 1950s Airstream which is our bedroom houses one of the biggest, comfiest beds I’ve ever slept in and again, the owners have thought of everything – there’s charging stations and lamps on each side of the bed, an electric blanket, and a torch for middle-of-the-night trips to the loo (more five-star bathroom than scout camp bog). Waking up the next morning, we already feel at home in the forest, even our dog Reuben is happier and more chilled out than he’s possibly ever been. The next few days are spent exploring the woods, climbing nearby Clachnaben, picnicking in the countryside, visiting the local farm shop, countless hot tubs and generally wishing this was our daily existence. Hopefully one day, it will be.

dinburgh’s Old Town in August can feel like one of the busiest places on earth. So, it may surprise you to know there are several sanctuaries just steps from the hubbub, where you can spend a very peaceful moment (and discover Edinburgh’s fascinating past.) “There are two special gardens off the Royal Mile. Dunbar’s Close, at 137 Canongate, is a very elegant 17th century garden and a joyful surprise. Explore Trunk’s Close at 55 High Street and you’ll find a hidden garden at the end with a wonderful memorial to Patrick Geddes, the father of town planning. “Anyone can visit Parliament Hall at 11 Parliament Square, across the car park behind St Giles. It’s an incredible space with so much history, like the trial of Deacon Brodie. Magdalen Chapel, at 41 Cowgate, is a little treasure, also with much history (some gruesome) and connections to the Covenanters, the Hammermen and John Knox.”

BEAUTY EXPERT FEATURING TASHA CALVEY (PICTURED RIGHT), HAIR EXTENSION SPECIALIST AND CO-OWNER OF THE PROJECTS SALON

The reason we set up shop… For most salons, extensions are an ‘added’ service but they are the core of our business. Combining extensions with a colour and styling business has been a winning formula for us. We’re more Alexa Chung and less Kate Middleton – think balayage and beach waves. The treatment people need but don’t get regularly enough is… a haircut! There is an expectation to have long, healthy hair but with that there must be a commitment from the client to look after their hair. There’s no point paying money for a great balayage if you’re not willing to take off the dead ends to complete the look. My must-have treatment is… a manicure. Victoria at the Beauty Boutique in Stockbridge takes care of my nails every four weeks and I’m always complemented on them.

My top beauty essentials are… a tinted moisturiser (bareMinerals Complexion Rescue or NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser) and Weleda Skin Food. It’s great to prep skin before applying make-up and gives a good glow. Davines Dry Texturize Spray is my hero hair product. It’s a lightweight spray that adds instant body with medium hold. AMANDA SOUTHEY FINDS THE PERFECT FAMILY-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT AT THE RESTORATION YARD

orking at i-on, friends think I’m an oracle of Edinburgh. And one of the most asked questions is; ‘where is the best family-friendly restaurant?’ I’ve never really had an answer until now, after a recent Saturday afternoon visit to The Kitchen at the Restoration Yard. Things are taken to another level here offering a fullon family day out: retail therapy for mum, play time at Fort Douglas for the wee ones and some great food and drink thrown in too. The restaurant is a beautiful open space with a relaxed vibe, gorgeous views over the country park, and tables outside for sunnier weather. The menu is a mixture of modern cuisine using seasonal ingredients, offering light bites and more substantial dishes for bigger appetites. We started with a lovely selection of bread and oils, £4, and a grilled goat’s cheese salad, £9, followed by a rump steak beefburger, £15, and chargrilled chicken burger, £15, with all the trimmings, homemade slaw and hand-cut chips. The little one had chicken breast and fries with a side of garlic bread, £6. The portions are big so we planned on sharing an ice cream sundae to finish. My four-year-old had other ideas and went to a very happy place devouring the lot with little help needed. See you there next Saturday? Word of mouth

THE BALMORAL’S NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF TALKS GREAT RESTAURANTS, THE PERFECT DINING EXPERIENCE AND HIS LOVE OF SALT AND VINEGAR CRISPS

T

aking over the reins of a Michelin star restaurant at Edinburgh’s most iconic address would leave many quaking in their whites but it’s a natural step for Scottish-born Gary Robinson. The internationally-trained chef has been in the industry for 25 years including positions as head chef to HRH Princes of Wales, executive chef at the British Embassy in Washington D.C cooking for numerous presidents, and at the exclusive Aberdeen Marina Club in Hong Kong. Here he talks about his passion for Scottish ingredients and Edinburgh’s culinary scene. What’s the best bit about taking over such an important role at the Balmoral? The character, history and heritage of not only this fabulous hotel, but this incredible city. The hotel’s achievements over the years ensures that we cannot afford to rest on our laurels but continue working towards being better with every day that passes.

What can we expect to see on Number One’s menu? We’re working with one of the best natural larders in the world. Carefully sourced Scottish produce will always be front and centre of all menus. Look out for a peat smoked Highland Wagyu Lorne sausage Scotch egg coming your way very soon. In your opinion, what makes a perfect dining experience? Wellchosen company, the ones you want to spend any length of time with, and really tasty, honest food served without fuss. On a night off where would you go to eat in Edinburgh? If it’s a smarter night out, oysters and a bit of roast sole on the bone at Ondine. For something more casual and regular, Ting Thai Caravan. Any places you’d like to try but haven’t yet? That list is endless. Le Roi Fou, Aizle, The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage, Fhior, Edinburgh Food Studio, Timberyard… In your career to date, what’s the most stressful dinner you’ve had to prepare? My father-in-law is an exceptional cook and his curries are something special. Before marrying his daughter we had him over for dinner. I made a curry. What would your last supper be? Salt and vinegar crisps, steak tartare, roast chicken, blue cheese and oatcakes. And your ultimate comfort food? Crisps. I’m obsessed with the damn things. WHO Michael Kaplan of Wermod Great British Vermouth.

to winning gold at the World Vermouth Awards in 2018.

WHAT A fresh and harmonious vermouth made on the Dalmeny Estate near South Queensferry.

SIGNATURE DISH For me, it’s a risotto, because you can add whatever is growing best – wild garlic, nettle tops, sorrel – and it becomes an entirely new dish. You can also add all the herbs you like by tossing in a glass of vermouth.

WHY We started the business in 2017 as an experiment. Dalmeny means “fort of the monks” and there had been a monastic herb garden here a thousand years ago. We were sure that we could make something remarkable out of the plants that grow here – it was just a question of getting the recipe right. Fortunately for us, this required a lot of tasting! After cold-infusing 24 estate-grown herbs, roots and flowers in English wine and spirit, we created an aperitif that goes perfectly with seafood, shellfish, and charcuterie and makes a cracking summer spritzer with tonic water. HOW A new business is always complicated to set up, but the Scottish drinks industry is remarkably welcoming. We’ve met many very friendly people willing to answer ignorant questions and help set us on the right path. I think this basically convivial spirit is one of the reasons Scotland does so well in this business; it took us from start-up in 2017

FRIDGE FAVOURITES Homemade stock, dried porcini mushrooms, miso, Worcester sauce, crème fraîche, tomato paste, chilli cider vinegar, lemons. If you’re cooking ‘needs something,’ it’s usually one of these. FOODIE SHOPS I grow what I can, and Dalmeny produces its own Highland beef, Mangalitza pork, venison, pheasant and pigeon Craigie’s Farm Shop is also just five minutes away. For charcuterie, nothing beats East Coast Cured in Leith. EATING OUT I like taking visitors to The Kitchin or Café St Honoré to show off what Scottish chefs can do with local ingredients. For drinks, I’d recommend Nauticus in Leith – an amazing combination of friendly local pub and worldclass cocktail bar. great-british-vermouth.com

he latest venture from the team behind Kenji on nearby St Stephen Street and Bentoya on Bread Street, UMI is the capital’s newest Japanese eatery, located below Stockbridge’s oldest Chinese restaurant, Ping On. What the space lacks in natural light, it makes up for in authentic atmosphere with red paper lanterns, horigotatsu tables and shoji screens transporting diners to the back streets of Kyoto. Settling in, we start off with Salmon Tiradito, £8.90, and Hamachi Carpaccio, £9.90, from the Cold

Plates section and immediately get quite excited. The delicate slices of salmon with passionfruit and coriander, and yellow tail with ponzu sauce and grape puree are both beautifully presented with balanced flavours-a clear sign that the menu is raising the bar. Next, the Aubergine Goma, £4.50, is equal parts sweet, sticky and mushy, as it should be, and the Green Dragon rolls, £11.90, have a respectable filling to rice ratio. We finish off with Chashu fried rice, £8.50, which comes with pork belly, sticky rice, scallions, mixed vegetables and miso soup - heavier than the delicate dishes though no less pleasing. Offering an authentic experience with an impressive assortment of dishes, UMI is well worth checking out. 18-24 Deanhaugh St, EH4 1LY, 0131 343 6991, umiedinburgh.com

KUKINA

AMY FALCONER DISCOVERS MOREISH TURKISH STREET FOOD ON LEITH WALK

L

ocated in the former Polish mini market, new kid on the walk, Kukina, is a slick, modern and elegant restaurant serving fresh, organic Turkish street food. The menu centres around hero dish Gözleme, a crispy unleavened bread stuffed with all manner of tasty delights, but before we have our first taste, there’s a beautifully crisp Turkish rosé to sample and a flavour-filled sharing board of meze to get stuck into. Armed with flatbreads, we make short work of the roasted aubergine with onion, garlic and sweet peppers, traditional tzatziki, beetroot with yogurt, mayonnaise and garlic, and

red bean salad with dill, parsley and sweet peppers, all £3 each. And soon we’re presented with our main course - the Kukina Classic: a mammoth board full of glorious delights including two different kinds of Gözleme, Sucuk (Turkish sausage), feta börek, grilled halloumi, grilled tomatoes, kofte, falafel, stuffed vine leaves, olives and bread… for only £30 for two. Perfectly spiced and seasoned with heady smoked flavours from the chargrill, everything is delicious. Full to the brim, I think I’m defeated until we’re offered “the best baclava you’ll ever taste,” which, naturally, I couldn’t refuse. And I’m glad I didn’t. Laid back, affordable and downright delicious, Kukina is right up my street. 235-237 Leith Walk, EH6 8NY, 0131 241 1387, Instagram @kukina_leith

Cocktails: There’s a lot of really good cocktail places no one knows about and I’m going to keep it that way. Nothing ruins a good bar like casual drinkers. Amateurs. That being said Panda and Sons is great.

THEBESTOFEDINBURGH

Film: The Dominion in Morningside is excellent. Such a cool cinema. Staff are lovely, couches are great. I love it there.

Burger: McDonalds. Though during the festival there’s nothing better than a late-night burger from the Well, Hung & Tender van normally on George Square. Pizza: Deep fried. From your local fish and chip shop, literally anywhere in the city. It’s impossible to get wrong and it’s delicious. If you don’t

Daniel Sloss

THE COMEDIAN SHARES HIS FAVOURITE HAUNTS trust me on that then there’s a new Sicilian pizza place opened up on West Maitland Street called The Roman Pizza Project which is also superb. Escape the crowds: The Water of Leith is nice and calming and takes you far away from the noise of the city when you need peace and quiet. Pubs: You can never go

wrong with hitting Rose Street as there is always a pub for whatever mood you are in. If you want somewhere quiet, there’s always the Oxford Bar on Thistle Street. Fish & Chips: Go to Waverley train station and get a train to Anstruther in Fife. That’s where the best fish and chips actually are. If you’re sticking with

Edinburgh, go to Fishers. The seafood is incredible and fresh so I normally go for whatever the fish of the day is. Fine dining: Chaophraya. I have no idea if this is fine dining. I assume it is because it has nice cutlery and a decent wine menu. It’s a Thai place that’s on the top floor of a building. I think I associate that with class because you’re literally looking down on everyone else in Edinburgh. Walk: Arthur’s Seat is

amazing. It’s a tough walk if you’re a lazy sod like me but it’s always worth it. The view is stunning. Just make sure you take a mini whisky to have as a little reward at the top. It also makes the walk down much more interesting. Daniel Sloss: X is at the Edinburgh Playhouse from 15 - 17 August. For tickets, visit edfringe.com.
