Humboldt man arrested OTTAWA — Matthew Allen, 26, Humboldt, faces charges after Ottawa police officers said he resisted arrest during a traffic stop Sunday. According to the Ottawa Herald, Allen was arrested Sunday afternoon in downtown Ottawa for allegedly possess-

ing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, driving while intoxicated, not having proper registration or liability insurance and not wearing a seat belt. An additional charge was pending after he allegedly resisted arrest during the stop.

Marine among victims CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) — Just four days before he was killed in a helicopter crash, Staff Sgt. Andrew Seif was awarded one of the military’s highest honors for heroism, a commendation he earned for his efforts to save a mortally wounded friend in heavy gunfire in Afghanistan. Seif, 26, was given the Silver Star in a room full of his fellow Marines, walking arm in arm with his wife after the ceremony. The boy who grew up playing soldier in his Michigan backyard was hailed by one of his superiors, Maj.

Gen. Joseph L. Osterman, as a selfless person who put himself in the line of fire so that Sgt. Justin Hansen wouldn’t be left behind. He and Hansen came under heavy fire as they closed in on a bomb expert in Afghanistan. His comrade was wounded; Seif moved him to safety, treated his wounds and fired back. The young Marine’s story emerged Friday when the Marines killed in the crash were publicly identified, some three days after the crash. The deceased had been students and husbands, officers and sons.

Rotary: Brocker Continued from A1

Tax increases for cigarette and alcohol sales, and perhaps fuel, are expected, Brocker said. He said changes in deductions for income taxpayers and possible elimination of the $20,000 residential exemption for the 20-mill statewide property tax to support state aid to public schools were other considerations. If the residential exemption were removed, it would cost home owners an additional $46.

With the upcoming year’s budget having to be in place by July 1, Brocker said he expected the sess i o n John Brocker “to be a long one,” likely extending well into May. A property tax increase for agricultural land has been mentioned, but Brocker doubts if it will materialize.
