Iolan Rhonda Jackson, one of five murder suspects charged in the killing of Iolan Shawn Cook, will have a preliminary hearing Dec. 2. On Wednesday, Magistrate Judge Tod Davis set the preliminary hearing date, the first among the five defendants accused of Cook’s murder.
At a preliminary hearing prosecutors will present evidence to Judge Davis, who will determine whether it is sufficient to require a trial. Also accused are Amber Boeken, Joshua Knapp, James Myers and Jessica Epting. Like Jackson, Boeken, Knapp
and Myers are in custody on $1 million bonds. Epting remains at large. The five are accused of murdering Cook March 13. His disappearance sparked a 16-day manhunt, which ended when Cook’s body was found in early April along the Neosho River between Neosho Falls
and Le Roy in southern Coffey County. Evidence indicated Cook had been stabbed. Prior to the preliminary hearing, Davis scheduled a status hearing for Jackson on Nov. 8. The next status hearings for Knapp and Myers are on Sept. 21. Boeken’s next hearing is Sept. 28.

CHANUTE — The Kansas Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s help in identifying a vehicle which left the scene of a fatal wreck Thursday near Chanute. The crash occurred about two miles north of Chanute on U.S. 169. Troopers said the unknown motorist — presumably a semitractor-trailer rig — crossed the center line and struck the trailer to another semitractor driven by Bryan W. Brodie, 56, Neosho, Mo. The impact caused Brodie’s truck to leave
the roadway to the right, enter the ditch and overturn. Brodie, who was not wearing a seat belt, was declared dead the scene. Troopers suspect the other vehicle is a red Freightliner. The rig almost certainly will have extensive damage to the driver’s side. Steps below the mystery truck’s door were a part of the wreckage. The trailer also may have damage, KHP officials said. Those with information can call KHP at (620) 431-2100.
