Iola students meet reading goals
Obituary Dede McDown
Mrs. McDown passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Wichita, at St. Francis Medical Center. She was born Sept. 10, 1955, in Greeley, Colo., to George and Ethel Hagan. Dede moved to LaHarpe in 1977 where she married Dale McDown on May 3, 1977. She had been employed at WalMart in Chanute and was on medical leave at the time of her death. Dede was preceded in death by her Dede McDown grandparents, parents George and Ethel Hagan and one sister Sharon Tarpley. She is survived by her husband Dale; two-step children Stacey Benedict and Jerry McDown, Chanute; and three sons and their families, Michael and wife Tracy, Deatsville, Ala., Brian and wife Ellen, Independence, and Robert and his mate Stephanie Purdy, LaHarpe; 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three sisters Wanda, South Coffeyville, Okla., Jackie, LaHarpe, Esther, Chanute; and one brother Ross, Lansing. A family memorial was March 8 at the Mission Baptist Church in LaHarpe followed by a life celebration at the City Hall Gym in LaHarpe. We would like to thank all who attended. All of us will miss Dede’s kind heart and loving smile.

winners as they could. Students who read 20 or more earned an invitation to the Caldecott Challenge party and a free book. Seventy-five students from Lincoln and 39 students from McKinley met the challenge. Any student who read all the Caldecott medal winners received a trophy at the party; five students from Lincoln earned trophies.

Area news Two injured
Two Rossville residents, William Harris, 75, and Patricia Harris, 72, suffered apparently minor injuries Saturday night when their vehicle struck a deer on U.S. 54 four miles east of Moran.
Scholarship awarded Hanna Hoffman, Moran, has received the Pittsburg State University Alumni legacy license plate scholarship. Hoffman is a senior at
