PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS Using

CAESAR II® July 23- 27 2012 Petaling Jaya Course Synopsis Pipe Stress Analysis is an important requirement for the safe design & operation of a process plant. Adherence to international codes (ASME, DIN etc) is necessary for safety compliance. To better understand pipe stress conditions due to fluid pressure surges arising from transient operating scenarios, especially normal & emergency shutdowns and start up, a fluid network analysis is necessary. In Pipe Stress analysis, the course will cover piping system modelling techniques, static (3days) and dynamic (2days) analysis, evaluation of piping designs and approaches to re-design. This is followed by coverage of modelling and simulation of fluid networks using Flowmaster (1day).

How will you benefit from the course?

You’ll learn to how analyse your company’s pipe stress problems that may have been sent to “specialists” You'll learn the underlying engineering principles used in analysing types of loads affecting piping systems. You'll learn the theory behind the problems to help you gain more confidence in your modeling and build better models faster. You'll work through examples to gain insight to the subjects. Comprehensive course notes are provided which will serve as a useful reference document for your future work. You'll be exposed to recent techniques in dynamic transient analysis.

Why should your company sponsor you? ® You will be able to accurately and speedily solve and understand the impact of surges and pipe stress problems ® You will become the in-house specialist thus eliminating the need for high cost consultants. ® All future re-design and improvements will be speedily implemented in a cost effective manner. In short, your company will gain a competitive edge and at the same time you progress your career.

Who Should Attend? Anyone involved with piping in the petroleum, chemical, power, gas transmission, water and related industries can benefit from this up-to-date, information-packed short course, whether they use CAESAR II, other pipe stress programs - or don't use any!

PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS COURSE 2011

Pipe Stress Training Schedule Statics Day 1 AM

Piping Code Basics Lecture introduces CAESAR II and our approach to piping flexibility and stress analysis – calculating stress, failure criteria for different load types, stress limitations, and Code stress equations.

Day 1 PM

Simple Modeling Workshop A group exercise develops a piping model and reviews most of the program’s piping input features. The session includes minor output review and system redesign.

Day 2 AM

Design for Piping Loads Lecture centers on layout and support for piping systems by addressing their, at times conflicting, requirements – adding stiffness to reduce stress caused by force-based loads and adding flexibility to reduce stress range due to strain-based loads.

Day 2 PM

Assorted modeling, analysis, and compliance topics A group exercise models, analyzes and redesigns a problem piping system. Students utilize most of the capabilities of CAESAR II (piping, structural, equipment, nozzles, hangers, and expansion joints) in working with this model.

Day 3 AM

Assorted topics, continued

Day 3 PM

Analysis documentation and static analysis workshop The majority of this session is a workshop where attendees work independently to model, analyze and modify a problem using their learned skills in input generation, results evaluation and system redesign.

PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS COURSE 2011

Dynamics Day 4 AM

Theory of Dynamic Analysis of Systems Develops the concepts used in dynamic analysis of systems – types of dynamic loads in piping systems, natural frequencies and modes of vibration, equations of motion, modeling and solution techniques, etc.

Day 4 PM

Harmonic Load Analysis – Forced Vibration Creates program input to evaluate response to mechanical vibration and reinforces basic concepts of amplified system response to a harmonic load. The system is then modified to alter its natural frequencies. This correction illustrates a method of system redesign to reduce dynamic response in general.

Day 5 AM

Response Spectrum Analysis – Seismic Load Modal analysis is employed to evaluate seismic response for both a single shock and multiple shocks entering a piping system. System response is reduced by addressing the largest modal component of that total response.

Day 5 PM

Time History Analysis – Hammer Loads The third type of dynamic analysis found in CAESAR II is developed here to evaluate a fluid hammer passing through a piping system. The proper settings of parameters for time history analysis are reviewed.
