‘‘Magnifico, the green project’’, Restaurant

This project constitutes my dissertation as part of my bachelor studies. It was an individual work and it was completed in December 2016.

AREA OF THE RESTAURANT

8

THE LOCATION This project is related to the design of the restaurant ‘’ MAGNIFICO, the green project ‘’ and the integration of nature to the sites and the general operation, based on the specifications of green restaurants. This idea came from the fact that the area, where the restaurant was designed, contains tall trees and whether these trees should be cut or not. This is an area of one thousand nine hundred and thirty square meters, which includes three small buildings of three hundred square meters in total, about in the middle of the site and twelve tall trees, about twelve meters height. This area is suitable for the creation of a green restaurant as it is located in a clean environment, close to the town but not in the centre of it. In addition, it is not only large enough to include a special place to produce vegetables, but also sunny and very windy, which helps to provide solar and wind energy to meet the energy needs of the business.

PLAN PLAN

ΤΗΕ MAIN IDEA The main idea is to mix all the imaginary zones that present in the restaurant. The natural environment penetrates into the artificial and in this way a building, which is in contact with nature, is created.

This diagram illustrates the imaginary zones that exist in the restaurant and reflect the sea, the beach, the plants, the buildings, the crops, the wind and solar energy. These zones are presented in this specific arrangement and are parallel to each other.

This diagram depicts the main idea of the design, where with parallel and oblique lines, each zone penetrates into the other. In this way, all the imaginary zones communicate with each other and create a connection between the natural elements and the artificial environment.

The plan was designed in an amphitheatric way in order to provide a view of the sea, from as many areas of the restaurant, as possible.

People with special abilities have easy access to all areas of the restaurant, with the help of ramps with suitable inclination. Moreover there are special designated toilet areas and parking spaces.

15

16

The restaurant '' MAGNIFICO, the green project '' is designed in a minimal way with simple lines and is characterized by clean surfaces.

Key elements that make up the restaurant's canvas are the wood, the white surfaces of cement, the water flow and the plants.

17

18

The water element exists in all areas, through a water-flow covered by glass- which penetrates the whole restaurant and creates the main corridors and the main entrances.

20

The restaurant, both indoors and outdoors, includes several natural elements. It brings the visitors in contact with the sky and the natural light of the sun, even indoors through the glass surfaces that exist on the roof and the walls.

21

The kitchen is placed on an open space to allow visitors to have eye- contact with the preparation of their meals. Many of the vegetables and fruits that are used in the kitchen are grown in a specially designed area at the back of the restaurant, which everyone can visit.

22

23

The garden with crops which is located at the back of the restaurant is open to public. It has its own storage space and it communicates directly with the kitchen, so it is easy to transport products.

In order to cover its energy needs, the restaurant uses wind and solar energy with appropriate facilities. Moreover, the restaurant provides large parking spaces for both cars and bicycles.

25

26

There are three toilets for women, three for men and a toilet for people with special abilities. In the waiting room there is a vertical garden and a wall made from glass brick that allows the entrance of the sunlight.

27

Plants and nature in general have a very ‘gentle’ way to influence human action, touching all areas wisely and positively to become a healer not only for the body but also for the soul, emotion, mind and spirit. Human beings cannot be seen separated from nature. All these reasons have led modern designers, trying to integrate the natural environment in their design and when it already exists, to protect and highlight it. More specifically, what regards to the restaurants, architectural design which incorporates the environment, using natural materials and plants, both indoors and outdoors, make the room more cozy, warmer and creates a more pleasant atmosphere for their visitors, who have only positive effects by their contact with nature. The design of the restaurant ‘’ MAGNIFICO, the green project ‘’, was based on all the positive effects that nature can have on human beings, trying to get the visitor in contact with natural environment. In addition, all the imaginary zones of the store, both the natural and the artificial, communicate and are connected in a harmonious way, not only indoors but also outdoors. Finally, the operation of the restaurant has been created in a way, so as not to affect the natural environment

‘‘Ioanna Kourbela’’, Clothes Store

This teamwork project was designed for the course of ‘‘Interior Architecture, Lighting/ Workplaces’’ in January 2014

THE MAIN IDEA This project is about a retail store for clothes of the Greek fashion designer Ioanna Kourbela and there is no better inspiration than her work. Her collections reveal the different aspects of a minimalist aesthetic embracing the simplicity and charm of classical harmony. This drove us to design a minimal, timeless, strict and elegant store. The main idea results from the folds of Ioanna Kourbela clothes, which indicate flow, movement and direction. The style of the store was designed in order to be characterized by timelessness, minimalism and strictness and the selection of this configuration arising from the fact that in a simple, more orthogonal and black and white environment, the clothes of Ioanna Kourbela would be highlighted in a better way, because the complexity of the weaving, the freedom of the form and the colors would be in an harmonious contrast with the store room.

LOFT PLAN

Regarding the design of the plan, the main element in the area is a black zigzag line that moves freely in space, lending dynamics and simplicity throughout. This line is a continuum that links the main areas of the exhibition of the retail. It starts from the entrance and creates paths, hangers, racks, the cashier and as it continues, it forms stairs and the store’s loft.

The coexistence of black and white in space is at such a level, where perfect balance is created. The white color itself is a perfect base to create decorations. Black is a dark color that gives tension in the area and makes it more interesting. It is the right combination for a minimalist and elegant result. In this way, the discreet luxury is achieved through the simplicity of the most timeless combination.

The shop windows are open type and the customer can come into direct contact with clothes, passing between them . In addition, there is a closed shop window at the back of the ground floor with a stunning scenery, made of pieces of paper and letters, that gushed from the first floor, which houses the studio of Ioanna Kourbela and continue on all shop windows, resulting in the creation of the outer sign.

The folds of the clothes of the Greek designer Ioanna Kourbela, the freedom on her lines, the movement, the complexity of the designs and fabrics, the innovative combinations and the free forms were the main inspiration for the design of this specific retail store. The starting goal of the design of the store was to attach simplicity, minimalism, strictness, elegance and to be absolutely timeless. This was achieved through the perfect combination of black and white, which is the epitome of all the elements we wanted to highlight, the simplicity of the lines and the strict structure with vertical and horizontal architectural engravings. The main feature of the shop is the black line that unfolds in all areas and creates a sense of continuity and unity. There is a sharp contrast to the retail’s interior, because of the choice of colors, and the selection of the design style, which is in visual contrast with the clothes’ design, highlighting them in the best way. The simplicity of the interior design and the complexity of the fashion design create a very interesting and creative connection between them.

‘‘XB’’, Hair & Nail Salon

PHOTOS OF THE STORE BEFORE THE RENOVATION

This project regards to the renovation of a nail and hair salon, in Patras. The construction company, which I worked for, instructed me the complete design of the renovation and in consultation with the owner we set the goal of a warm and welcoming space, which will make customers feel like home. The new plan was wanted to be modern and timeless. Due to the low budget, the spatial layout and a part of the furniture on the ground floor of the store could not be changed. Therefore, the design should have focused on the decoration and the careful selection of materials, colors and textures. The natural materials, with predominant wood, brick and texture of concrete, which always give a warm effect, was selected.

This is a real project, that I designed in my professional career in the company ‘‘Voulgaris Create & Construst’’, in January 2016 .

On the ground floor of the nail and hair salon, wooden rectangular structures were designed, enclosing both the mirrors, the accessory shelves in the area of the hair care, and the sofa at the customers’ waiting area. The impressive large mirrors give the impression of a larger store and they simultaneously serve the customers. The cashier and the back wall are lined with brick, which in combination with the concrete at the remaining walls and the wooden floors give a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. There are displays of wood and iron for advertising products. The individual decoration was made with the logo of the company, some small frames related to hairstyle, placed in a playful way and of course the presence of plants, that always make the store warmer and cozier.

62

The store’s lighting changes in specific areas and it is always appropriate for the functions of each spatial zone. In the front of the store, where the waiting room is, the lighting is general and more atmospheric, while in the morning, it is accompanied by the existence of natural sunlight. Impressive and distinctive lights are asymmetrically hanging from the ceiling, creating the feel of rain, while reducing the sense of the big height that exists in this part of the store. At the hair treatment areas, the lighting is more focused and strong, with the help of some spots that have been placed in wooden structures, while over the whirlpool, a structure of wood, iron and hanging lamps has been created, in order to add both style and light where it is needed. General lighting on the back of the ground floor is achieved with light stripes on the ceiling.

63

64

65

On the loft of the store a small hair care area has been placed, while the remaining area is covered with the nails care. The design logic on the loft follows the ground floor’s decorative style. The floor is wooden, the walls are made of concrete and the structures are wooden, too, except for the manicure furniture, which is made of concrete. General lighting is achieved with lighting stripes on the ceiling. The pedicure area is discreetly hidden and very warmly decorated, in a playful way.

66

LOFT 67

The decoration of a store for an interior designer is not just the composition of furniture and color, but also the creation of a space that gives the customer the feeling of a cozy atmosphere. The renovation of this specific Nail and Hair Salon aims at creating a warm and welcoming waiting area for the customers. All the specifics, based on aesthetic and the available budget, have been taken into account. The result is the creation of a modern and simultaneously timeless, warm and welcoming store with the help of natural materials and some special decorative elements that enhance the identity of the salon.
