Guiding attendees through the evening will be local radio personality Paul Castronovo of the Paul and Young Ron Show on BIG 105.9 FM. T

he internationally acclaimed University of Miami Health System, better known as UHealth—which features a Plantation office—has added a well-known and widely respected doctor to its already stellar staff. Jeffrey J. Goldberger, M.D., M.B.A., has been named Chief of the Cardiovascular Division at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He will also oversee all cardiac clinical care at UHealth. Goldberger, who has published nearly 200 studies and receives ongoing research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), joined Miller School in early November after serving as a professor of medicine and director of the cardiac arrhythmias program in the Center for Cardiovascular Innovation at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He will expand UHealth’s multidisciplinary team approach to detecting, diagnosing and successfully treating atrial fibrillation and focus on developing novel ablation procedures to destroy the tissue that is responsible for the irregular heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation is the most common form of arrhythmia in the U.S., with 5-8 million cases being treated per year. “Right now, our ablation approaches give us a success rate of only about 50 percent or so for one of the most common forms of atrial fibrillation, which is called persistent atrial fibrillation,” Goldberger says, adding that he is determined to improve that success rate. UHealth’s Plantation office offers Weston-area residents convenient access to world-class health care. Its highly qualified staff includes cardiologists and electrophysiologists, who specialize in heart rhythm disorders. “We also offer a full range of medical therapies and services, including advanced imaging,” Goldberger says. Patients at the Plantation facility will also have access to clinical trials and innovative new treatments. Goldberger will also focus on stroke prevention. Fifteen percent of all strokes are related to atrial fibrillation, he says. “And often, the first time we know they have it is when they have a stroke. So there is a tremendous opportunity there to do a better job of identifying candidates for a stroke and finding better ways to prevent strokes.” For now, however, Goldberger is concentrating on settling comfortably into his prestigious and important new position. “The University of Miami is a great institution,” he says. “There is a lot of breadth and depth in both its clinical and research realms. So I was honored that they chose me to help further development of their cardiovascular enterprise.”

Certain people will naturally gravitate toward Bob and others will gravitate toward me. And that gives us an advantage, because based on that we can decide who takes the lead with a particular client. There are also certain skills that Bob has and other skills that I have that are very complementary and important to our success. And we both come from executive backgrounds in retail. If you’re working your abs with the goal of a 6-pack, you might be forgetting all about the oblique muscles that run up and down your sides. Here are 5 exercises to show attention to those neglected muffin tops and love handles.

• RUSSIAN TWIST: Sit with your

knees bent in front of you. Lean back slightly making sure to keep your back straight. Twist from side to side while keeping your core tight. For a more advanced version, lift your feet off the floor and or hold a medicine ball or dumbbell in your hands while repeating the exercise. 15-20 reps.

• SIDE PLANK HIP RAISE: Begin in a side plank position with your core engaged and your elbow underneath your shoulder. Then raise and lower your hip. Repeat 15-20 reps on each side.

• WOOD CHOP: Stand with your feet

shoulder width apart and core tight. Hold medicine ball in both hands. Lift the ball over your head toward the right. Twist your body, bringing your arms down to your left side, as if chopping and repeat. Allow your knees to bend slightly in order to increase the crunch in your abs and oblique muscles. Repeat 15-20 reps on each side.

• STANDING SIDE CRUNCH:

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and hands behind your head. Start with opening up your hips and raising and lowering your right knee to your right elbow feeling that side crunch. Repeat 15-20 reps on each side.

• SCISSORS: Lie on your back with

your legs straight and arms to your side. Bring both your legs straight up toward the ceiling. Keeping legs straight, lower your left leg until it’s about six inches off the floor. Lift your head and shoulders off the floor and grasp the back of your right leg, gently pulling it toward you. Switch legs and repeat on the other side without pausing. Do 15-20 reps.

At that time, I was working at the fine dining French restaurant L’Escalier. The chef, Matthew Soban, was also a natural at matchmaking. I was joking around one day and asked him when he was going to hire my future wife. A couple of weeks later he said, ‘I’ve hired your future wife.’ When I asked him how he knew she was for me, he replied, ‘She has a tattoo of a skull and a spine going down her back, blue hair, dressed in black…totally your style; she is the one for you.’ After one year, we were engaged and one year after that we got married.” Why it works: Dustin: “My wife and I share not only our love, but also a passion for food. When you have a great day because you came up with a new dish or found a really cool ingredient, she gets excited hearing about it and wants to see pictures. It also helps that she understands the long hours I put in, and if the restaurant needs me I will be there no matter what. If she was not in the industry I don’t think it would have worked due to the demand of the kitchen life and the toll it takes on your personal life.” Andrea: “It helps so much that my husband is also a chef. No one understands better what my life is like. Besides being my friend and husband, he’s also someone I can talk to about work and he knows exactly what I’m talking about. Divorce is difficult, regardless of the month we are in. However, some months will tear at our heartstrings a bit more than others. February, you are one of them. But do not fret, I am here to help guide and glide you through it. First things first: You are not alone. I know you may feel that all your friends have a significant other and are planning some outrageous Valentine’s celebration, but that is simply not true (OK, maybe one or two might be planning something fabulous. But who cares? It’s time to stop focusing on others and begin focusing on you). Take this opportunity to find comfort in your own solitude as well as begin exploring your passions. Learn to love a quiet night in with a good book and a calming cup of tea, or watch that old classic you’ve been putting off while sipping a bold cabernet. Also try venturing out of your comfort zone by trying something new. Take a salsa/ballroom dancing class, a golf lesson, register for a gourmet cooking class, attend a local wine tasting, bring out the Picasso in you by signing up for a painting session, or join


your local Chamber of Commerce and start networking. Once you begin refocusing your thoughts and energy on yourself, your options are endless. When you begin to love yourself from within, external love becomes effortless. For the single parents out there, this Valentine’s Day can be a great opportunity to help with your child’s healing process of divorce by establishing new traditions and creating new memories for their mental scrapbooks. Many times divorce can be just as overwhelming and confusing for your children as it is for you, so take this holiday to remind them just how much they are loved and appreciated. Valentine’s Day can be overwhelming and sad for the recently divorced, but it’s likely that your children are sharing in these feelings. Celebrating the holiday with them will remind you how much you are loved and needed while also providing your kids with special attention during a hard time. Try making a kid-friendly meal together and enjoying it in a new place. Or maybe enjoy a camping trip in your own backyard, complete with s’mores. If you’d prefer a day out of the house, plan a fun movie marathon at the local movie theater, or maybe explore your nearest state park and go on a nature hike. Going to a sporting event or a local play can provide your kids with a fun new memory, or, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can plan a quick weekend getaway to a new place. It’s not so much the activity you choose that’s important, but the feeling of belonging your children will have while spending quality time with you that is important. Children feed off your energy, and if they see that you are relaxed and happy those feelings will transfer to them. It can be easy during this difficult holiday to forget how much love surrounds you on a daily basis, so take this time to remind yourself that your children’s love is unconditional and the bond you share with them is the thing that matters most. It was through the love of my children and the commitment I had to giving a voice to the voiceless victims of divorce that the book How to Love Your Kids More Than You Hate Your Ex came to light. It offers caring support, helpful advice and the occasional bit of tough love you may need to keep your mind off your divorce and onto what’s important: your love for your child. I am aware that for many, keeping your mind off your divorce can be quite difficult, not because you do not love your child, but because you are experiencing feelings and emotions that are so raw and new. This February, make time to love, listen and learn.

eeping up with the ever-changing currents in the educational landscape is a Herculean task for students and parents. This school year, major changes are in effect for the SAT, which is required for college admission, as well as for standardized testing at the elementary, middle- and high-school levels. Positive changes in education include an emphasis on individualized instruction through assistive technology. Schools such as the Sagemont School in Weston offer programs in high-stakes testing preparation and infuse technology throughout the curriculum. Students’ varying needs regarding second-language acquisition are being addressed through cutting-edge methodology at Lingua Language Center, which recently relocated to Weston. InWeston has sought insight from educational leaders in MiamiDade and Broward counties to spotlight some of the current trends in education.

Redesigned SAT For most students, the globally recognized SAT is the most important test they will take in their lifetimes. Their score will undoubtedly determine their future educational and career paths. Knowing how to take the test is as critical to achieving a high score as possessing the required academic knowledge. For this reason, SAT prep is a big business. One of the leading test-prep programs is Pembroke Pines-based, College Direct, K-12 Tutoring and Test Preparation Center, founded and operated by Lourdes Nodarse, a 30-year veteran of the Miami-Dade County Public School System. Nodarse outlined several of the major changes to the SAT, which will become operational nationwide in March, 2016. The test will return to its original 1600-point scoring scale. The reading and writing portions will combine for one score (up to 800 possible points) and the math section will yield the remaining score (up to 800 possible points). The math portion will have a narrower focus, delving deeper into Algebra; getting to the “heart of

Individualized Education through Assistive Technology In an attempt to provide instruction at the varying levels of millions of students in the public school system, students’ academic needs are being met through differentiated instruction. Assistive technology is useful, since most programs are adaptive to meet the learner’s needs beyond traditional classroom instruction. Programs such as iReady, Apex Learning, Edgenuity, Read 180, Gizmo, Achieve 3000 and Reflex Math provide individualization in the areas of reading, math, and science through the use of computers. Students can log on before and after school, from home, to take advantage of these supplemental programs. Many schools schedule

Big changes to state-wide standardized testing are also in effect at the elementary, middle- and high-school levels. The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) has been replaced by The Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) and End of Course Exams (EOC). The FSA is administered to students in grades 3-10 in English Language Arts (ELA). The math test is also administered to students in grades 3-10; however, students who are taking Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra II are administered an End-of-Course Exam (EOC). Students must also take EOCs in Civics, United States History, and Biology. As with the FCAT, third-graders are required to pass the Grade 3 ELA with a Level 3 or higher in order to be promoted to 4th grade although there are four other opportunities for promotion. Only the 10th-grade ELA FSA and the Algebra 1 EOC are requirements for high-school graduation. Students who do not achieve passing scores have multiple opportunities to retake these examinations and other

options such as achieving concordant scores on the PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test), ACT, or SAT prior to graduation. The Florida Board of Education met on January 6 to decide final cut scores for the FSA that was administered in the spring of 2015. It decided on a more lenient passing rate based on the FCAT’s five-point scale. These scores will be released in June 2016. “Since the State of Florida adopted the Florida Standards, we’ve seen an increase in younger students attending College Direct, which services students in grades K-12,” Nodarse reports. “These students do not lack intelligence, but are falling behind by the artificially imposed constraints of a curriculum that is not developmentally appropriate for many students, goes at a breakneck speed and waits for no one. Parents are having to supplement instruction beyond the classroom by bringing their children to centers like ours, where students work with certified teachers, one-on-one, and are able to catch up. Sadly, students in the public school are measured by the outcome of single tests and the academic, emotional, and physical strain is too much for the family to bear.”

Algebra.” Students will not be allowed to use a calculator for the first math section. The essay requirement has been eliminated. Vocabulary will still be tested but in the context of the passages in the reading section. There will be no penalties for guessing. The redesigned SAT looks more like the ACT minus the science section. This is a result of the growing number of students who are opting to take the ACT in lieu of the SAT. “For the first time in history, in September of 2012, more students took the ACT than the SAT, a trend that has continued to grow,” Nodarse says. “The College Board is betting on attracting more students to the new SAT test. This redesigned SAT is also aligned to the Common Core Standards since David Coleman, the president of College Board, is one of the architects of Common Core.”

Lingua Language Center Lingua Language Center offers an array of language courses of varying intensities to meet the diverse needs of its students. Recently relocating to Weston, the center has successfully partnered with Broward College under the leadership of its founder and president, Andreina Ojeda, a Weston resident. At Lingua, students may attend on a short-term schedule or for a whole year; combine intensive English with business or test preparation; or work on conversation and accent reduction, depending on their individual learning needs. When asked how Lingua meets students’ individual needs, Ojeda explains, “Whether your needs are focused on language training for a corporate group or business unit, or you need to learn a language in a customized one-to-one setting, we serve the unique needs of bilingual professionals in the corporate world. Our corporate language programs are offered, both in English and foreign languages, in each of the different learning levels. The programs are tailored to your corporate group or individual executive’s specific needs, learning style, schedule and location, as requested. They can be industry-specialized, for a number of industries.” Lingua employs an array of supplemental materials and technology to support its proven Enter-Training (entertainment and training) Methodology. Through the use of technology, students are able to learn anywhere, anytime. Currently, the Lingua Center is piloting a project to offer its language programs on a fast-track basis to students worldwide who are participating in a degree program in Broward College’s International Centers.

The Sagemont School in Weston has been ahead of the curve in meeting students’ educational needs for nearly two decades. The school is committed to delivering a college-preparatory Preschool through 12th grade education in a technologically-rich, supportive, and culturally-diverse learning community. Sagemont students enjoy a well-rounded, private school education on two state-of-the-art campuses. According to Brent Goldman Ed. D., Head of School, “Sagemont prepares students for college entrance exams by offering 3-4 practice SAT and ACT tests throughout the school year. These tests are proctored and scored by our staff.” When asked about assistive technology and individualized learning, Goldman shared, “We have a tablet program (Microsoft Surface Tablets) for all students in grades 5-12. All of our middle school and high school textbooks are e-texts.

Online classes are offered to high school students to provide them with flexibility. Sagemont is proud to be entering into its 20th year of education this fall.” It comes as no surprise that Sagemont students have been recognized for their achievements at the local, regional and state level and are consistently sought after by toptier colleges and universities.

Broward County residents may have watched Miami’s restaurant scene take center stage both in and out of SOBEWFF, this year’s firstever Taste of Fort Lauderdale Series will put some of their own local restaurants and chefs on the festival map. The result? A new level of South Beach Wine & Food Festival success that even the organizers couldn’t have predicted—and well-deserved global recognition for Fort Lauderdale’s burgeoning food scene. “We’re so excited to expand the physical footprint of the festival north this year,” says Schrager. “Broward’s dining scene has been growing steadily over the past few years. We’re always looking for new talent to feature during the South Beach Wine & Food Festival weekend, and this is a great way to do it. Plus, it will draw awareness to the area as a culinary destination.” And why shouldn’t it, when the organizers are sparing no expense to get Broward County the attention it deserves? Kicking-off the festivities on Wednesday, February 24th, a day earlier than normal this year, the Taste of Fort Lauderdale Series will get the party started with “Seaside Eats,” a tasting event hosted by Food Network star Robert Irvine. Taking place at the historic Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, this addition to the schedule will feature some of South

Florida’s top eateries and chefs, like S3 Restaurant’s Peter Boulukos and Steak 954’s Nicolay Adinaguev, as well as pours from Chȃteau D’Esclans. From then through Sunday, the party won’t stop as the Taste of Fort Lauderdale Series highlights its best restaurants with a series of soirées designed to meet the diverse tastes of its patrons, including five unique dinner experiences, a late-night party at Kuro, and the first-ever “Bloody Mary Brunch.” All these events and more will be hosted by some of the top names in the culinary world—like Todd English, Debi Mazar, Gabriele Corcos, Marc Vetri, Auberge Resorts’ Robert Curry and Paul Lemieux, and even the entire cast of Chopped, which will be the focus of Sunday’s brunch. And with such a mix, Fort Lauderdale’s chefs have plenty of platforms to show what they can do. Gavin Pera, chef de cuisine of Burlock Coast at The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale, for example, will host the Chopped “Bloody Mary Brunch” at his restaurant, and will also participate in Wine Spectator’s “Best of the Best” at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. I love that a lot of the proceeds are going to FIU’s The Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management—I think it’s very cool that, throughout all this, we also get a chance to give back.” Chef Giovanni Rocchio, who will host a dinner at his restaurant alongside James Beard Award-winning chef Marc Vetri, is also looking forward to seeing what the Fort Lauderdale neighborhood will bring to the table. “Miami does take over the limelight, but we want to show what we can do, too,” says Chef Giovanni, who helms the fine-dining establishment Valentino Cucina Italiana, which first opened in 2005. “I’ve been down here for 30 years, and in Fort Lauderdale, we’re not as ‘gimmicky’ as Miami. We have a clientele that is well traveled and has an appreciation for good food. And thanks to Sardinian sisters Sheila David and Debbie Bautista, and their restaurateur uncle, Giulio Ledda, we now have a taste of its magic right here in Weston: Zona Blu. The brainchild of Executive Chef Andrea Fadda, this new addition to the Weston restaurant scene first opened its doors in September 2015—and to the delight of anyone who’s been there, it’s been packed ever since. A lifelong dream of the Sardinian sisters, owning and opening a spot like Zona Blu didn’t become a reality until Fadda—who has opened countless highend restaurant and hotel dining concepts all over the world, including Pappa & Ciccia, which still stands in Miami’s South of Fifth neighborhood—came to them with an idea.

“Sardinia is a really small island, and everybody knows everybody. We knew Andrea because of his restaurant there and we knew he was a phenomenal chef,” says Debbie. “Andrea owned a restaurant in Miami, but it’s more touristy there. He really wanted to open a family restaurant where he can feature more Sardinian cuisine, which is his passion. Being locals, he asked us if we would try and find a location in Weston. We were stay-at-home moms at the time, but we started helping him—eventually, we decided that we wanted to be a part of it.” Walk through its doors and into the bright, airy restaurant, all surrounded by floor-to-ceiling-glass windows, and you’ll start to get a sense of just why the partners love it as much as they do. Filled with light tables, relaxed vibes, a large traditional, Italian wood-fired pizza oven, barrels of Sardinian wine on tap, and blue accents everywhere you turn —including delicate blue orchids, which form every centerpiece— Zona Blu is as enchanting as it is delicious. And speaking of delicious, with Andrea at the helm, the menu proves there’s nothing he can’t do. Start with the Soufflé al Pecorino, a delicate mix of Pecorino cheese and roasted Portobello mushrooms in a black truffle sauce, and then move on to the Spaghetti al Cartoccio, spaghetti and fresh seafood doused in tomato sauce and surrounded by a perfectly thin pillow of pizza dough. Miele Sardo, Sardinian puff pastry stuffed with lightly fried sweet cheese, then drizzled with Sardinian honey. Pair it all with a glass of wine, and you’ll understand just why Andrea and Zona Blu are quickly becoming household names in the area. “There is a lot of good Italian cuisine here in Weston, but it’s different,” says David. “When you look at our menu, you’re going to see a lot of things you’re not familiar with. It’s not typical Italian food, but I think people here appreciate the fact that we’re unique, and when they taste our food, they realize how fresh it is. We’re also heavy on seafood, and there aren’t a lot of great seafood restaurants around here. So I think we’ve really tapped into a niche in Weston.”

But of course, at the core of all its success, Zona Blu is nothing more complicated than an authentic, passionate ode to the partners’ beloved island, paradisiacal Sardinia. “We love our island; we spent summers there growing up. It’s a gorgeous island, it has a very rich history, the food is amazing and the concept is beautiful,” says Bautista. “If you search for Sardinia, every picture you find will be of the most spectacular blue water you’ve ever seen in your life. The Anti-Utes: Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe

M

ercedes-Benz was one of the first luxury automobile brands to jump into the luxury SUV space back in 1998 with its M-Class mid-sizer, and during the last 18 years, the M-Class became one of the most versatile and capable luxury utes on the market. As nice as it has become today, especially after a recent mid-cycle styling refresh and a new “GLE-Class” name, its ubiquity has sent some in search of alternatives. Fortunately, they won’t have to go far, as Mercedes offers two such things that are decidedly less common, and in many ways, do SUV things just as well and just as luxuriously. 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate Base price range: $60,825-$105,225 The E-Class “estate” (Euro-speak for wagon) is a quick, elegant and surprisingly charismatic car, one that manages to please traditional Benz buyers and style-minded contrarians alike in the essential fact that

it is not an SUV. Now more than ever, choosing an E-Class estate over one of the many dozens of SUVs on the market is a statement in itself, one that says, in essence, I don’t need to butch up my image with a tough-looking off-roader that I’ll never take off road. So there. From a styling standpoint, Mercedes-Benz has done much to sex up the hauler in recent years, starting with a mid-cycle update back in 2014 that gave it a snazzy front clip and a tidier rear end. Still, it’s an eminently honest automobile, an unashamed station wagon—the E350 even offers two rear-facing jump seats for the kiddies!—and yet offers all the luxury you’d expect to find in an E-Class sedan. And interestingly, the cargo floor in the wagon is surprisingly long and wide; from an actual square-footage standpoint, wagons are hard to beat. And the low lift-over is a back-saver. Built in Sindelfingen, Germany, the E-Class Estate comes in two forms, both with 4Matic all-wheel drive, and neither of which

The GLE-Class Coupe puts a sportiness into the SUV that’s anything but typical, with its sloping body and zippy twin-turbo V-6.

could be considered remotely underpowered. The base engine is a 302-hp V-6-powered E350 Estate that can hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds, according to Mercedes. And then there’s the absolutely steroidal E63 AMG S-Model, with its astonishing twin-turbocharged V-8 with 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This barrel-chested beast can out-accelerate all but the world’s fastest sports cars during stoplight wars — talk about the element of surprise! — with a naught-to-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. Given how few customers take Mercedes-Benz up on this car, the E63 AMG wagon is rarer than some Ferraris, and hence, to see one in the wild is pretty special. That said, driving any E-Class Estate endows the driver with a sense that they’re in something special because it’s so rare and so, well, normal. So yeah, a bit of snob appeal comes standard. And blowing the roof off a Porsche Carrera when merging onto the freeway in the AMG model, well, that never gets old.

The new GLE-Class “coupes” are as crass and vulgar as automobiles can be whilst still being allowed to wear the proud Three-Pointed Star. And for that reason alone, we dig them. Standard AMG sport seats also dial in some intensity to the driving experience yet are very comfortable for long stints. Those seats, combined with an AMG steering wheel and a fresher overall interior design, make the interior of the E350 wagon feel rather stodgy by comparison. As with the E-wagon, the GLE-Class coupe is also offered in full-tilt AMG trim. The GLE63 AMG S model is powered by a rip-snortin’ twin-turbo V-8, in this case producing 577 hp and 561 lb.-ft of torque. Heavier and taller than the E63 AMG wagon, it is not quite as quick and athletic (nor as deliciously ironic), but it’s still faster than anything so tall and heavy has any right to be. It has astonishing grip in

corners and even better steering feel than the GLE450 AMG, though the penance comes in the form of an occasionally brittle ride. Brandishing as each does a full suite of AMG styling tweaks, both the GLE450 AMG and GLE63 AMG coupes gaze down the road with a predatory stare and make a big style statement everywhere they go. Indeed, whereas the E-Class wagon is discreet, no one misses the big GLE-Class coupes. Vision challenges from the high waistline and sloping roof pillars force the driver to rely on the car’s mirrors and blind-spot warning system to keep from steamrolling that occasional Miata that may be hiding back there, but overall, driving the big thing is eminently enjoyable and, in the right conditions on the right road, thrilling. And “thrilling” is certainly not a word we can use often when describing the typical SUV.

Andrew Reid This month, Wendi Sugarman Bieber hung at the studio with the multitalented artist, who has his hand in a variety of media including paintings, murals—including A Living History at the Old Davie Historical Museum for the recent Broward 100 VisualEYES project —sculpture, furnishings and currently, a graphic novel. If you could be commissioned to create a piece or series of art by anyone either living or not, who would it be? I would want to create a series of big murals for Miami Beach titled “Serious Lust Abandon” that would be an homage to the spirit of reinvention and madness that is my home. From the time I checked out your website and entered your studio, it was undeniable that you have a vast array of artistic ability and artistic execution. What is it that inspires you to be able to switch between all the mediums and executions? Creative interests drive me. Each project is so challenging, draining me in a way so that I am always looking for something new or different to get excited again.

Do you agree with the philosophy of the following quote: “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep”? I guess I agree. Mistakes or rather accidents are essential in the creative process, as in life. When we first met, I shared my love of Bryan Ferry and that I had seen some artwork of his album covers on your site. Your story of the history was an especially cool one. The studio I worked at in NYC heard Bryan Ferry was finishing up an album around the corner, so I raced over and showed some stuff to him. We ended up spending a couple of weeks mixing up words and images, resulting in a Grammy nomination for Bête Noire. I had just met Karen—my wife now—so off we went to LA; she thought I was pretty hot stuff back then.

You have yet another area of passion and execution working in magnificent species of woods where you are being commissioned to create tables and statement furniture. These have such an organic yet intricate beauty that I found so interesting considering your other artwork which is magnetic in a non-organic sense. How are you able to transition from one end of the spectrum to the other? I’m a modernist at heart, whether it’s a biomorphic form or a mural. Also, it’s great to switch from one medium to another, plus 2D and 3D present their own challenges. The parallels for me are in the bold forms. Your native land is New Zealand. Killer accent for us Americans! From there you were off to the Big City (NYC) and then down here to Miami Beach. Does geographic space influence the execution of your art? NZ is the most powerful geographical influence on me, I always miss it. I am a sailor too so horizons always beckon. I do use land and cityscapes all the time to set the scene. I saw a dichotomy of sorts between the guy I was speaking with—a real chill and fun conversational guy—and the work of an artist whose work has such a level of intricate detail and intensity. Would you agree with this observation? I can be a bit confusing, so it probably translates into the mix of my work. If you could obtain and be the beholder of any piece of artwork out there of the most famous of artists, whose would it be? Why and where would you put it?

Guernica would be nice to have on a wall; but no I don’t need originals, unless I could borrow the Pietá for a while. Tell me about your love, inspiration and passion for doing the public art installations you have done, in spite of the fact that the private sector is more lucrative financially. Public art breaks down the exclusivity of art. It doesn’t hang in a gallery or museum; it’s in the public’s face, where it breaks up boring daily routine. Street art kind of does that, but there’s nothing more rewarding than having your art embraced by the community it serves. Many people may not be aware of the Old Davie School & Museum. I was blown away by what you created and what is available for all of us to explore right here within Broward County. The ODS (Old Davie School) is a great example of true community spirit. Everyone in South Florida should check it out. A few people, some ancestors of the original Davie settlers work constantly to educate and engage us. The best way to see it is on the back of a school or group tour. Go online call them. The mural I made, A Living History, is a result of great community input, which is true public art. If you could spend some quality time with a past or present artist, who would it be and how do you picture spending that time with him? I think alcohol would have to be included. So probably sitting in the Cedar Tavern with the ‘50s abstract expressionists would be good. They could all draw really well, so we would just use napkins, with a pen borrowed from Joe the bartender, a Dewars and a beer chaser.

If your chosen artist were to be commissioned to go inside your head at this precise moment, what is the visual you would hope they would create and entitle? There’s a Henry Miller line that sums up the visual and title: “No miracle, no relief, only ideas fattened by destruction spew out like bile, guts of the carcass ripped open.” It’s gross, I know. You are currently in a process of a graphic novel. Please share the creative process and physical rigors of such a project. This is very challenging to me. Jeffrey Crespo, aka Jex, wrote the story—a punk apocalyptic tale where kids save the day. I grew up devouring the great French graphic novels, like Metal Hurlant, and masters like Moebius, Druillet and Wrightson. Also, I’ve drawn a million storyboards in my time. I’ve only illustrated the first seven pages; I will need a solid chunk of time to complete. It’s physically challenging. Sitting all day destroys your health. Jex is very patient. There is a phrase that stands out to me that I feel like I would use as your tagline—“Visualizing people’s thoughts.” What about visualizing your own thoughts? Visualizing people’s thoughts is what I’ve done for a living. Visualizing my own thoughts is very complicated; digging through my vast array of visuals and putting them together like word assemblages. It’s very challenging, but ultimately the most rewarding. I’m not there yet! If there is any area that you would want featured about yourself that I have not ventured into, please share.... I’m kind of a late bloomer.
