models on which they’re based though not as much as, say, the frisky Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan and coupe. Their sheer competence as sport sedans/sport coupes, from their propensity to gather momentum regardless of the weather—thank you, sport-tuned “Quattro” all-wheel drive—to their abilities to retain so much of that momentum in corners makes them innately more fun to hustle along a twisty road. The sharp exhaust note from the 354-hp turbocharged V-6 is a) audible, and b) enjoyable, also adding to the thrill factor when accelerating, though we would kind of like to hear even more of it. And the telepathic precision of the steering and pan-flat cornering attitude made possible by the lowered suspension with adjustable shocks beg you to take the next turn ever faster than the last. That said, all the while, both cars feel like they’re holding something back, like they want to show you their wilder side but for some reason don’t, seemingly content as the driver’s humble servant rather than a partner in crime. Maybe that’s what the RS models are for. Of course, there are a few differentiators between the S4 and S5 worth mentioning. As a four-door sedan, the S4 is easier to get in and out of (especially for rear-seaters), is more spacious inside, and at $51,875, is $2,175 cheaper. The slinkier S5 boasts a more curvaceous body and a more intimate interior, but its low-roof coupe body, two-

A five-door hatchback fashioned in the S5’s low-slung vein may address some of the S5 coupe’s practicality concerns, while the upcoming S5 convertible model will offer more infinite headroom for all aboard. At the end of the day, however, there’s more that unites the S4 and S5 than separates them—a good thing considering how much goodness there is overall.
