The End is an intervention into HICA’s picture window, where the words ‘The End’ are fixed onto the inside of the glass in a style and scale one would associate with the end credits of a movie. “By the simplest means possible, the artists gently fictionalise the surrounding landscape by suggesting a sense of cinematic time overlaying the real-time view out of the window”. It’s a thrillingly simple idea, but something we most definitely want to see. We might even be recreating it in our own houses before too long. www.h-i-c-a.org

Short Break Carers Needed for Children and Families affected by Disability Short break care is family based and takes place in the carer’s own home. Bringing up a child with a disability can put extra demands on any family. Though friends and the wider family can help, many parents find that regular short planned breaks with trusted

and trained carers can make a huge difference to them, to the child with disability and other children in the family. In Highland many children and their families are linked with a carer family, and have been for many years...

...Here is what a few of them have to say: “Having short breaks for John means uninterrupted family time and undisturbed sleep. It means for our son a chance to meet other people, get out and about and have a life outside his home. Secrets & The City The final slabs

are in place; part of the culmination of 3 years work on the Inverness Streetscaping project by Inverness Old Town Art (IOTA). The project began in 2007 with Highland duo DUFI (Fin Macrae & Al MacInnnes) invited to creatively transform the floorscape of the Old Town. Stories, quotes and newly commissioned writing were interwoven with the running theme of water – something that’s fundamental to the city. Etched Caithness paving stones were laid throughout the city centre designed to intrigue the passer-by… but what you might not know is that underneath each stone is a specially placed “hidden” work. To celebrate all the contributions (by musicians, writers and members of the public) IOTA, DUFI and the writers got together at Rendezvous Café for an evening of music and film on 29th April, bringing together many of the people involved in the project for the first time.

A taster of things to come can be seen on the new doors on Union Street. These fascinating images were the product of the creative mind of Inverness-based artist, Gordon Robin Brown, with a wee bit of additional design magic provided by MOOSE77. Delicate and lace-like designs provide a flavour of what’s coming… Look out for unusual details in the designs – a butterfly, pennyfarthing, penguins and microsope! Other dynamic public arts projects are underway for high-vis spots in the city… More will be revealed next issue… IOTA is looking to broaden its scope to embrace the whole of the city. We would be delighted to hear from any groups, businesses or members of the public who have an idea for a project or would be interested in working with us. Please contact Susan Christie on 01463-724383 or via the website www.invernessoldtownart.co.uk

Work has been simmering away behind the scenes of the Victorian Market to develop three new entrances. IOTA worked with artists B&W Cart who came up with a Lace Portal theme and the final phase is coming to an end. Detailed designs have been given the go-ahead by the engineers and manufacture is underway with installation scheduled to take place very soon! Photos by Ewen Weatherspoon

EDEN COURT

From 4th June - She’s out of my League (15) An average Joe meets the perfect woman, but his lack of confidence and the influence of his friends and family begin to pick away at the relationship. Starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve.

Bill Hicks was one of the funniest comedians ever to tread the stand up boards. His social conscience comedy baited everyone right wing – religion and politics being his main topics (I wonder what he would have thought of a certain dull power hungry Etonian) – which meant that he is beloved by half the population and ignored by the rest. Two young British directors have made a loving and visionary portrait of Hicks with American: The Bill Hicks Story (18th-24th), turning the usual talking heads documentary on its head with a mix of animation and archive footage. Not just for fans of Hicks but a great introduction for anyone yet to hear his acerbic wit.

Death at a funeral (15) - Chris Rock stars in this 2007 comedy remake. Following the death of his father, Aaron must sort out the funeral arrangements. Things go well, until mistakes form the reverend, and a mysterious dwarf, turn the day into chaos. Also starring Danny Glover and Keith David From 11th June - Greenberg (15) - A New Yorker moves to Los Angeles in order to figure out his life while he house sits for his brother, and he soon sparks with his brother’s assistant. Starring Ben Stiller. From 18th June - Killers (TBC) - A vacationing woman meets her ideal man, leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple. From 25th June - Get Him to the Greek (15) - A record company intern (Jonah Hill) is hired to accompany outof-control British rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) to a concert at L.A.’s Greek Theater. However, Aldous’ rock star life leads the comedy duo from the frying pan in to the fire, in an ambitious attempt to make it half way round the world in time. When in Rome (PG) - Beth is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love. However, on a whirlwind trip to Rome, she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love, and is then aggressively pursued by a band of suitors. Next thing she knows, Nick (Josh Duhamel) shows up in her life, but Beth is unsure weather he is actually falling for her, or if he is in fact under the spell also.

Woody Allen has long been punching way below his belt; his 70’s comedies were inspired introspective gold, his more serious 80’s dramas held him up as the heir to Ingmar Bergman that he so idolised, but the last 20 years have thrown up a mix bag of decent (Bullets Over Broadway) and terrible (Anything Else, anyone?). His new film Whatever Works (from 25th) is his funniest film since Sleeper in 1973 and his best film since Crimes and Misdemeanor in 1989, it shows us what he could have been making over the past 30 years. Larry David (‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’) is perfectly cast as an old curmudgeon just trying to make his life work, trying to grab hold of any kind of love and happiness that he can find; as he says ‘whatever works’. Even if you don’t like Woody Allen this could be the film to change your mind. Revanche (25th-1st July) was nominated for last year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar, losing out to Departures (which also won Inverness Film Festival’s best film). It is a slow burning thriller about a robbery gone wrong with the perpetrator looking to get his revenge against the man he feels is responsible. This is one of the best films that I have seen in the past 15 years, it’s perfectly paced, superbly directed and full of terrific performances. Not just for fans of world cinema but for film fans of all types. [PAUL TAYLOR]

BABY GROOVE @ Eden Court Jim Love Studio, Sun 20 Jun, 11am

D

isco on down with your under 5s for a jam packed hour of funky beats and groovy moves for under 5s and their families. Mini movers and tiny Travoltas can bliss out to the aptly named DJ Rusk on the wheels of steel with guidance from Eden Court’s drama and dance

team, with the alarming possibility that grown-ups might even do a bit of dad dancing of their own. Add some creative play with scarves and hoops, rhythm sticks and shakers and, with a bit of luck the little ‘uns will not only have a great time, but also be tired out by bedtime. What more could you ask for on a Sunday afternoon? The session is for all under 5’s. No experience necessary!

CAN’T SEE THE WOODS FOR THE TREES @ Eden Court, Thu 10 Jun If you were a bird, in which tree would you make your nest? If you could plant a tree, who would it be in memory of and why? Collections of stories, movements and memories around trees form the basis of an exciting and innovative performance by Eden Court Theatre Young Company. This is your opportunity to join young theatre-makers from across the Highlands as they present a brand new piece of contemporary theatre, which is Eden Court’s entry into this year’s National Theatre of Scotland Exchange programme. Exchange is the NTS’ nationwide youth theatre, which unites young theatre-makers from across Scotland and beyond. Youth theatres create a new piece of quality contemporary theatre that is devised and performed entirely by the groups themselves. Each piece of theatre is then performed as part of the Exchange festival week, which will take place at the Byre Theatre in July.

SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF TRUMPETS @ Elgin, Fri 18-Sun 20 Jun

Y

ou can’t beat a bit of trumpeting as will be conclusively proved at this inaugural event bringing musicians and music lovers from across the world to the North East of Scotland. Some of the biggest names connected with the instrument will be in attendance, luminaries like Derek Watkins, Chuck Findley and Andrea Tofanelli. A key event at the Festival will be the first ever Scottish International Trumpet Competition, which will be open to all players, to be held on 20 Jun. There will be two categories, classical and jazz, with prizes totalling £5000. The preliminary rounds will be held on the Thursday before the festival weekend and players who are unsuccessful in the preliminary rounds will be invited to participate in a large trumpet ensemble that will perform in the final Gala Concert on the Sunday night. The last three rounds will be held during the weekend, with the Final being held on the Sunday afternoon. The top three in each category will be awarded their prizes during the Sunday night Gala Concert, with overall winners performing in the concert. Events will be held at four sites around town- Elgin Town Hall, St Giles Church, Holy Trinity Church and Elgin Library Gallery. For ticket details and a full programme go to www.sift-uk.com

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Sat 12 Jun

The foundation of SE’s work is the rich repertoire of music for strings of the three centuries since the age of Bach and Vivaldi, but they’ve also collaborated with folk musicians such as Aly Bain and Dougie Maclean. Concerts and recordings may be the most visible aspect of the Scottish Ensemble’s work, but its commitment to education, outreach and community work in Scotland is equally important. Well deserving of your support then and this should be a fine night. www.strathpefferpavilion.org

SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Fri 18 Jun

The SCO and Principal Conductor Robin Ticciati return to Universal Hall, a place where they always get a great reception for what promises to be a marvellous programme of Brahms and Mozart. Brahms’ Serenade contains some of the composer’s most appealing music – melodious and big-hearted with more than a hint of folk influence. Brahms was much influenced by Mozart while writing the piece, whose ‘Turkish’ Violin Concerto is performed here by the sensational young German soloist, Veronika Eberle.

SONG STUDIO FROM THE RSAMD @ Nairn Community Centre, Sun 13 Jun

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama has for many years held an international reputation for producing exciting young singers, many of whom are currently performing around the world. Song Studio is a new initiative aiming to enhance the profile of song within the Academy and to extend its accessibility to a wide range of audiences in Scotland and beyond. A pool of advanced singers and pianists will present a series of creativelythemed concerts where presentation will be both informal and informative, with a view to breaking down some of the barriers which songs in a foreign language may present to some people.

KISSY SELL OUT @ Ironworks, Wed 02 Jun

W

hen you bring East London together with MySpace you’re bound to end up with some kind of scene stealer and such is the case with Kissy Sell Out who’s become one of the most in-demand producers, remixers and DJs around. His name may suggest some kind

of Nathan Barley frippery, but he’s actually rather tremendous.

HEADROOM @ The Phoenix, Academy Street, Sat 05 Jun Always good to see someone trying a bit of a different template for the clubbing scene in Inverness and this one looks to be a bit of a corker. Psychedelic and Goa Trance no less with the exotically/ bafflingly named DJs Aurora, Whirling Dervish and Pedro_GMB. Plus a live set from Poland’s very own Janko, psychedelic UV decor and VDJ Pluto. Now that’s got to be a bit different from what you’d normally expect on a Saturday night. Entrance is a mere £3 and it runs from 9pm-1am.

LES PETITS PILOUS @ Ironworks, Sat 26 Jun Hard though it might be to believe, it’s actually summer and the season gets celebrated at Ironworks’ Summer Party with an appearance from one of the hottest new acts around. Les Petits Pilous aka Anthony Ferrando & Jean-Patrick Simonetti from Nice are best known for their hits “Wake Up” and “Jolie Fille”, but have also done remixes for Justice and Goose and garnered fans like Moby, Errol Alkan and Felix Da Housecat along the way. Their forthcoming “Bielle” looks like soundtracking the months ahead, so it’s a great time to catch them. Joining them will be Ross Lyall from local favourites FILTH certain to play the best in dirty beats and filthy electro, a live set from We See Aliens aka Joystick Discoteque & Robbie Dunsmore who have played with the likes of Cagedbaby, Justin Robertson and Funk D’Void. The line up is completed by former Blue/Motion man Mike Macdonald.

ABAGAIL GREY @ Eden Court One Touch, Fri 04 Jun Good to see the sextet of Claire Campbell, Stephen Obern, Gillian Fleetwood, Fraya Thomsen, Ali Brown and Derek Urquhart playing at Eden Court and perhaps attracting an audience who wouldn’t necessarily have gone to check them out at Hoots or Ironworks, venues where they are more likely to be found. The line up of vocals, piano, two harps, trumpet, violin, acoustic guitar, bass guitar and drums is unusual in itself, but used nicely to communicate their soaring folk, as the Long Case Clock Suspension album released earlier this year demonstrated. Well worth investigating. www.eden-court.co.uk

KAREN MATHESON @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Fri 04 Jun

S

ean Connery described Karen Matheson as having “a throat surely touched by the hand of God”, a vaguely unsettling way of trying to put into words a beautifully celestial voice. Best known as the frontwoman of Capercaillie, as a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various projects of collaboration including the award winning BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, where she recorded tracks with Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith, Rufus Wainright and a host of respected musicians. She also recorded and toured as lead vocalist on Heritage de Celts, a supergroup project in France that sold half a million albums and more recently she has been collaborating with James Grant in special concerts and TV appearances and recorded songs for Norway’s multi-platinum artists Secret Garden. At Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Karen has performed sell-out solo shows in the reverential ambience of Glasgow Cathedral , so her Findhorn show will undoubtedly attract a heap of acolytes. And when you’ve heard her extraordinary voice, you’ll be one of them too.

NORTHERN ROOTS @ Bogbain Farm, Fri 04- Sun 06 Jun The return of the popular Northern Roots festival sees an intriguingly varied line up guaranteeing a weekend packed with talents old and new. Friday’s opening concert finds The Bevvy Sisters, Dean Owens, Mairearad Green and Anna Massie in The Byre followed by the Festival Club in the Bistro from 10.30pm featuring excellent local act the Galipaygos and Neonach. There’ll be sore heads the next day, but an elixir for the soul comes in the form of an afternoon in the Bistro on Saturday subtitled “Are You Sure Hank Did It This Way?” paying tribute to the mighty Mr Williams. And we don’t mean Robbie. In the evening it’s the turn of the finest klezmer band around, Moishe’s Bagel, to raise the roof, ably assisted by Blue Flint and Vaguely Rajun. And it’s the turn of the wonderful Chihuahuas to host the Festival club. Sunday afternoon sees another themed affair in the forms of Songs Of Protest hosted by Iain MacGillivray, with the closing concert in the evening featuring Andy M. Stewart & Gerry O’Beirne, The Tim Eady Collective and Alan & Mary Anne Frew. You can buy tickets for individual shows, but why not get a weekend ticket (including festival club and afternoon concerts) for £45? More details at http://northernrootsfestival.wordpress.com

THE 7TH MIDSUMMER GIG @ The Beaufort Hotel, Inverness , Sat 19 Jun, 8pm Ranald Smith and Iain MacGillivray are calling this one “The Back Catalogue” and with 35 years worth of stuff they’ll have plenty to choose from. “It seems like yesterday we were zipping up and down the road to Ullapool after playing a night at the Market Bar,” they say, “or heading off to one of our residencies in Aviemore, Nairn or the Haugh Bar”. And along the way, they’ve picked up plenty of fans who’ll all be calling for their favourites, requests that should bear fruit. The duo will be joined by Ranald’s playing partner of old, Marie Saunders, who proved to have lost none of her vibrancy at last year’s concert. Should be a good night of nostalgia. Tickets will be on sale at the Beaufort reception desk from Fri 04 Jun.

THE PROCLAIMERS @ Ironworks, Sat 05 Jun

C

raig and Charlie Reid’s distinctive sound and facility for writing deceptively barbed pop has made for a career lasting over twenty years and, courtesy of the Sunshine On Leith musical (which returns to Eden Court later in 2010) continues to attract new fans. It’s a heck of a way from when they played The Market Bar back in the mists of time, so there’s something fittingly triumphant about them appearing on a proper big stage (Highland Games excepted) in the Ness at last. Rather like madness, they actually have far more hits than you might at first imagine and there’s also bound to be plenty of stuff from the critically well-received Notes And Rhymes album of last year. A rather joyous shindig we’ll warrant.

BARB JUNGR @ Eden Court, Wed 30 Jun Rochdale born Jungr is the toast of New York these days for her clever interpretations of songs from right across the musical spectrum. Last time she was up here it was to showcase her unique take on Bob Dylan, while this time the show is going under the banner of The Men I Love, meaning songs by such diverse figures as Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Brian Eno and Iggy Pop. Now in her mid-fifties, she cut her teeth on London’s alternative cabaret circuit in the 1970s and went on to form a long- running musical partnership with the blues guitarist and singer Michael Parker, releasing a number of albums of original material, and collaborating with comedians Julian Clary and Arnold Brown (with whom she actually won the Perrier Award in 1987). “We were just at the end of the time when the Perrier was given to acts that did music and comedy,” she says. “I was lucky because I came up through that circuit and the people who were on it were Paul Merton, Julian Clary, Arnold, Steve Brown – the comedy was different. People had to do everything – it’s called entertainment.” And refreshingly open to all influences it is too. If this show’s anything like her last we’re in for a real treat.

JOAN ARMATRADING @ Ironworks, Thu 17 Jun With nineteen albums to her credit and another on the way, Joan Armatrading has had what you might call an enduring career. Having persuaded her mum to barter two prams for her first guitar, she started songwriting at the age of 14 and the ensuing years have seen her turn out a host of hits like “Love and Affection”, “Down To Zero”, “Drop the Pilot”, “Me Myself I” and many more. The consummate singer songwriter, there’ll be plenty of fans taking advantage of the opportunity to actually see her play live. If there are any tickets left by the time you read this, get ‘em now.

THE FOXES @ Hootananny, Sun 06 Jun You’ve got to love a band who call one of their singles, “Bill Hicks”. Such is the case with The Foxes who are coming to town to promote their new “Depression, Joy & A Moment Of Fame” EP. Having just recorded a debut album with producer John Cornfield (Oasis, Muse, Supergrass, Razorlight) it’s pretty certain you’ll be hearing more of their warm, harmonic pop’n’roll in the months ahead and they’re already getting a favourable critical response to match their unabashed self-belief.

MUSIC > JAZZ > Django & Kidd SPIRIT OF DJANGO @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Wed 23 Jun, 8pm And what a spirit it is. Jazz guitarist Martin Taylor (below) marshals the spirit of the mighty Django Reinhardt to celebrate the centenary of the great man’s birth. Award winning guitarist Taylor has established a unique musical career as an internationally acclaimed musician, and his inimitable style has seen him recognised as the world’s foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar playing. As well as being a true guitar innovator, he is also a master concert performer, dazzling audiences with his solo shows, which combine virtuosity, emotion, humour, with a strong stage presence. As well as his solo concerts and recordings, he has also collaborated with musicians from many different musical genre including, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Atkins, Bill Wyman, George Harrison, Dionne Warwick, Sacha Distel, Bryn Terfel and Jamie Cullum. And just to fill those half seconds in his life when he’s not whizzing around the world, he even has an online guitar academy at martintaylor.com. This show takes its name from the title of his new album, wherein he does justice to Reinhardt’s work and indeed something very close to his own heart. Having played with Grappelli, that means Taylor can trace his own musical lineage back to the original Hot Club Of France and it’s that panache that shines through in what he does. Recommended. www.strathpefferpavilion.org

CAROL KIDD @ Eden Court, Sat 12 Jun Kidd’s impeccable phrasing and distinctive delivery have seen her highly acclaimed for interpretations of jazz standards and here she’s joined by long-time guitarist Nigel Clark, for popular tunes from The Great American Songbook and more. www.eden-court.co.uk

MUSIC > CD REVIEWS > The Fall, Oasis, Lady Antebellum... THE FALL-Your Future Our Clutter (Domino) Mark E Smith makes his debut for a new label, though something like his 400th release to date. And this is the best thing he’s done in a while, combining his usual oblique lyrical savagery with a noise that rocks in all the most unexpected directions. Even finding time to criticise his new patrons, he delivers a heap of new classics in the likes of “Cowboy George” and Mexico Wax Solvent”. There ought to be statues. SAINT ETIENNE- Tiger Bay/Finisterre (Heavenly) Unexpected, but very welcome rerelease of two gently classic pop albums that actually sound more modern today than when they first came out over a decade ago. Mixing folk vibes with electronic technique they found the perfect outlet for musings on people, politics and, most of all, a fractured, vaguely nostalgic vision of a London rarely explored. And great pop songs too, supplemented here with a load of unreleased tracks and outtakes. OASIS-Time Flies 1994-2009 (Big Brother) The definitive singles collection, with videos and a DVD of their final concert. Oddly the order has been changed so it’s not all chronological, but perhaps the fact that it’s not immediately sonically obvious adds fuel to the argument that they ought to have either progressed more or split earlier. Their Masterplan compilation album remains more rewarding, but a final hurrah sales wise is assured for this one. THE BLUETONES- A New Athens (CIA) Fellow Britpop refugees who actually prove themselves capable of brave new impulses. Mark Morriss still has a fine knack for inventively original pop shapes, but this is an altogether darker proposition and none the worse for that. If you had ‘em down as mere perky funksters, this might prove you wrong. TEENAGE FANCLUB- Shadows (PeMa) Ah, Norman, good to have you back. Mr Blake returns to the fray with TFC’s first album in five years and, while the Big Star influences are still apparently a prime motivation there’s much more to this than just the sound of tilting at past glories. Lead single Baby Lee is a perfect introduction to a summery, elegant piece of work where tracks like “Sometimes I Don’t Need To Believe In Anything” and “Sweet Days Waiting” slip easily into the Fanclub canon. APPLICANTS- Escape From Kraken Castle (Tigertrap) What a glorious din. Led by ex Digital Hardcore act Fidel Villeneuve, this recalls the spirit of Atari Teenage Riot for a punked up generation as loud guitars collide with sneaky samples. Even the titles rule- “Evelyn Waugh”, “Obey eBay”, “Since Porn Took Over The World”, “Treble 20”- and they’ve got the noise to back them up. HARPER SIMON-Harper Simon (PIAS) Paul Simon’s son no less, though he’s spent much of his life playing down the association. Based in London for several years as part of the band Menlo Park he now has the confidence to unveil his own solo creations and they’re not half bad in an Elliot Smith/Ryan Adams vein. THE MAGIC NUMBERS-The Runaway (Heavenly) More retro-influenced pop as magic Numbers return after a lengthy hiatus with, well, pretty much a retread of the things they did before. It’s all very pleasant in a harmonically celebratory way, but not about to change even the tiniest part of your world. Nice, but nothing more. THOMAS TRUAX-Sonic Dreamer (SL) Mad as a box of frogs, Truax uses home-built instruments and rhythm machines to craft the most curious of sounds, unsurprisingly finding a kindred spirit in David Lynch with whom he previously collaborated. Back on his own surrounded by steampunk oddities he comes up with all manner of unhinged tunes, the highlight being the fabulously titled “The Cannibals Have Captured Our Nicole Kidman” when he’s joined by Curtis Eller, the man who calls himself “New York’s Angriest banjo Player.” Brilliant. LADY ANTEBELLUM-Need You Now (Capitol) Best selling act in America by a (literally) country mile. Actually closer to soft rock than any real C&W roots, but by the end of the summer they’ll be everywhere, mark our words. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

SPECIALS / TALK > Monster Science Festival aims to tame the monster of science

SPECIALS

A celebration of the big and the scary, the Inverness Monster Science Festival gets underway in June, with a host of free events and activities for schools and the general public. The Festival launches with world-famous scientist and author Professor Richard Dawkins, who will be talking about The Wonder of Science, and why a little scientific understanding can add so much to our enjoyment and appreciation of the world around us. (Although free, you will need to book to attend: see www.monsterfest. co.uk, or call 01463 700391.) Among the monsters being tamed during the Festival are the Big Scary 3: diabetes, heart disease and cancer informal evening sessions will give you access to friendly advisers, supporters and experts, who can guide you on their prevention and management. We shall also be travelling to the stars, pondering the secrets of the universe, exploring the astonishing biodiversity of our planet, thinking about climate change, and having a LOT of fun at our Monster Science Open Day, where you can grapple with ‘Blood, Bile & Body Bits’, take part in the mind-bending K’nex Challenge, make friends with Dr Mhairi’s Micro Monsters, have fun at our science-in-comics drawing masterclass, and more. A separate schools programme will offer a fantastic array of activities to spark an abiding interest in science – including 2 shows by TV’s amazing Dr Bunhead! (Dr Bunhead is doing a public show, too – see website for details and booking.) The Monster Science Festival also incorporates a Monster Film Festival at Eden Court and a creative approach to exploring science through art, which will be on display throughout the month (see website for venues). Liz Barron, manager of the Festival for Inverness College, explained, ‘Monsters represent what we don’t understand. There are aspects of science that can feel scary, but we’re hoping that the Festival will help people to see that science is also beautiful, important, exciting and fun! It is by understanding the science that we can tame the monsters!’

Get along and contribute your thoughts and ideas on climate change on the “Scribe Wall”. TIM QUINN @Eden Court, Sun 27 Jun

Subtitled “Arrgh-The Ups and Downs of a Comic Book Creator”, this promises to be a marvellous opportunity for comic fans to get the inside track on what it’s really like to make the things. Tim Quinn has worked on a wide range of strips throughout a 30 year career, ranging from Beryl The Peril and Bunty to Spiderman and The Incredible Hulk. And he’s got a heap of great tales to tell including how the naughtiest comic strip ever seen was produced in the Marvel Comics basement and what the banned Spiderman cover looked like. You can also participate in Tom’s cartoon workshop which will share some of the tricks of the trade and help you improve your own drawing skills. Come wearing capes and masks.

NEIL GUNN TRUST LECTURE @ Eden Court, Tue 01 Jun

Entitled “The Power Of Friendship Across The Israeli-Palestinian Divide”, features two women Daniela Norris and Shireen Anabtawi, each from either side of said divide talking about their different cultures and upbringing and how they’ve come to appreciate each other’s point of view. Last year Daniela was awarded one of the top prizes in the Neil Gunn Writing Competition and encouraged by this, compiled a book with Shireen called “Crossing Qalandiya” which examines many of the things they’ll be talking about at the event. There’ll be a Q&A session afterwards, followed by the launch of the 2011 Neil Gunn Writing Competition.

SPECIALS / TALK > NBAF, SUNFLOWERS & MORE NAIRN BOOK AND ARTS FESTIVAL @ Nairn, 05-13 Jun

Britain’s first female poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy has been one of the most interesting holders of the title, most recently penning a rather splendid poem about David Beckham’s troubled Achilles tendon. She’s the star attraction at Nairn’s Book and Arts festival this month, but there are plenty of other big names appearing including Christopher Brookmyre, John Burnside, Andrew O’Hagan, A L Kennedy, Sir John Lister-Kaye, Denise Mina and Allan Guthrie. Another highlight will see one of the event’s most successful past speakers, winner of the United Nations Prize for journalism, Ishbel Matheson, who now works for the charity Save the Children, talking about her recent return visit to Darfur. Gaelic language events include writers Angus Peter Campbell and Meg Bateman; top musicians Iain and Charlie MacFarlane, Ingrid Henderson and Ewan Robertson; and an introductory “fun session” for people who would like to know more about the Gaelic language. With subjects covered ranging from history and the archaeology of battlefields to gardening, travel and fiction, there’s obviously pretty much something for everyone, including, for the first time, a film programme. For full details go to http://www.nairnfestival.co.uk

At Highland Hospice and throughout the Highlands, June 2010 is Sunflower Month We would like everyone to get involved in our Sunflower Appeal by ‘doing something sunny for money.’ Our aim is to have a month of fun and involvement throughout the Highlands raising valuable funds for, and awareness of Highland Hospice. The fundraising team at Highland Hospice faces the challenge of raising over £6000 a day to ensure that patients continue to receive the unique services that we provide. As the only hospice serving the Highlands we rely on the generosity of the Highland community to enable us to deliver the exceptional level of quality care and support that we provide to patients, their families and their close friends, free of charge, at a difficult and traumatic time when they are faced with so many fears and uncertainties. So why not make 2010 your year to make a difference to someone’s life and get involved in Sunflower Month. Sunflower badges, the Hospice emblem, not to be confused with the Marie Curie daffodil, are widely available throughout June so why not buy one and wear it with pride to show your support. Could you get together with some friends or colleagues and organise your own Sunflower Event. June 4 is Hospice Day and we are encouraging as many businesses as possible to show their support on this day by organising a fundraising event. Alternatively you could organise an event at home, at your local church, club or organisation such as T @ 3 or Wine at 9. Whatever you decide to do you can be sure that you would be supporting a good cause and that your donation will be received with huge gratitude and will make a direct contribution to our work with patients and their families. Our Fundraising Team are on hand to point you in the right direction with tips and encouragement. You can get in touch by calling our Events Hotline on 01463 227906 or emailing us at events@highlandhospice.org.uk

CHEER FESTIVAL @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 19 Jun

SPORT

Funny to think that only a decade ago, cheerleading was seen as a faintly exotic activity confined to American Football games and Stateside ticker tape parades. Now of course, it’s everywhere, from Heroes to, it seems, the humblest village fete and recognised as a sport in itself. The best of the best will be in attendance at the biggest cheerleading and open dance event in the country with 800 competitors from as far afield as Stornoway, Wick, Brora and the Isle of Skye vying to be crowned North Of Scotland Champion 2010. While the movies might suggest cheerleading is a hotbed of backbiting and treachery, the reality is rather nobler as the organisers are keen to emphasise. “The Cheer Festival strives to build a fun and family atmosphere for all participants, coaches and spectators,” they say. “We value healthy rivalry and promote team spirit! We encourage participants, coaches and spectators to represent themselves and their teams with pride at all times and show respect to their competitors on and off the performance floor.”

Monster Rampjam @ BMX Ramps, Bught Park, Inverness, Sun 20 Jun Last year with only a little notice a few hundred people turned up for what became one of the highlights of the summer. Organised by the teenagers and adults that use the ramps, they’re trying to help raise funds for repairs and new equipment. If you like extreme sports or just looking for a great day out, you really should take a gander past. With skateboard, BMX and inline jams galore they’re aiming to make it even bigger and better. Live DJs promise to provide the soundtrack and they’ve even asked the local butchers to come down and cook some proper grub! Tickets are £1.50 and can be bought on the day.

PETROFAC ATHLETICS LEAGUE @ Inverness Golf Clubs, Fri 28-Sun 30 May The Petrofac Athletics League is flying the flag for the North and East of Scotland while, locally, Inverness Harriers Amateur Athletics Club (IHACC) caters for all abilities and aspects of the sport. This ranges from track and field to cross country, road running and hill running and they also have a thriving joggers group. Club training nights are at Queens Park Stadium, Inverness on Tuesday and Thursday nights and move indoors on a Thursday night to Millburn Academy in the winter. There are plenty of events coming up in the months ahead, with the Secondary Track and Field Championships in Grangemouth on 11 Jun and a Petrofac Athletics League North meet on 27 Jun in Inverness. THEATRE > COMEDY JIMMY CARR-RAPIER WIT @ Eden Court Empire, Sun 13 & Mon 14 Jun

THEATRE

An inevitably popular return for the man who, we’ve recently noticed, has a laugh like a sea-lion being disembowelled. Perhaps that’s why he’s honed his persona as the undisputed master of the deadpan, vicious one-liner. Whether he’s actually that funny anymore, or just impeccable at what he does, is a matter for some debate, but there’s no doubt that he can work an audience better than anyone else.

MORECAMBE @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 17 Jun Last month Eden Court reminded us of the genius of Stan Laurel and now it’s the turn of arguably the finest post-war comedian, Eric Morecambe to get justified praise. In what’s been critically lauded as ‘the performance of a lifetime’, actor Bob Golding hurtles through the triumphs and tribulations in the life of 1971’s Pipe Smoker Of The Year - from his humble beginnings as a lad from Lancashire singing for pies and peas, through the giddy heyday of variety and summer season to his rightful status as a national treasure in the hearts of almost thirty million TV viewers. The play also examines Eric’s relationship with his ambitious mother, his struggles with ill-health and how his partnership with Ernie survived a long, arduous road to fame and fortune. This exciting and original work, written by Tim Whitnall and directed by solo-maestro Guy Masterson, had its debut at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe enjoying full houses, standing ovations and dazzling reviews, culminating in a prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award for ‘innovation and outstanding new writing’. It also picked up glowing tributes from many celebrities - several of whom had known or formerly worked with Eric himself. In an ironic twist, one of the few towns in Britain that turned down the chance to show this fine work, was Morecambe. Doh!

REGINALD D. HUNTER @ Ironworks, Thu 03 Jun A regular fixture on TV panel shows, Hunter’s live shows are far more incisive than most of his onscreen ruminations, sticking by and large to a tried and trusted routine, but always prepared to lob in a few incendiary diversions just to see where it takes him. The result can often be stunning, as you’ll find out.

ROCKNESS S

: a 4 page guide

trange to think that there was a time when RockNess didn’t exist. Now it’s an established part of the festival circuit, shaping its own identity with each passing year and challenging T In The Park for status as Scotland’s premier bash. Quite why TV stations haven’t cottoned

on to the aesthetic possibilities of covering a festival set against a backdrop of jaw-dropping beauty remains a mystery, but perhaps the more the bands who play put the word around, the closer the possibility of full telly coverage. NME certainly seems to agree having ranked the festival in its Top Five and this could be the year that gets it atop the podium. On the following pages we highlight some of the acts worth parking yourself in front of the stage for, but of course, the real joy comes from stumbling across the unexpected. Have fun.

RockNess Day 1 Friday 11 June 2010 Fatboy Slim A welcome return for the man we like to think of as Mr Rock Ness. A prime impetus behind the whole festival his appearances are guaranteed to inspire mass celebration and should kick of the weekend in style. Expect to hear the anthems spliced with stuff from his new concept album (recorded with David Byrne) about Imelda Marcos. DOWNLOAD Weapon Of Choice

Pendulum Australian drum’n’bass rockers who don’t know the meaning of slowing down. Stroboscopic frenzy is usually the order of proceedings and if you’re lucky you might even get treated to their cover of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”.

DOWNLOAD Salt In The Wounds

Friendly Fires St Albans dance punksters whose music, oddly enough, is regularly used to soundtrack then football - Final Score on the BBC and the upcoming fixtures on Soccer AM. A sign perhaps of their dazzling way with hook-filled pop. DOWNLOAD Jump In The Pool

Enter Shikari Perfectly encapsulating the contradiction that is the UK in 2010. A Dance band. A Rock band. A blindly hedonistic band. A bitingly political band. Trance, dubstep, screamo, metalcore. In one place. There is no precedent, only obscenely uplifting life-affirming flames-of-discontent-fanning oblivion. Sure, there are going to be iconic moments aplenty at this year’s RockNess. But if you really want to know where it’s at, do not miss Enter Shikari. Can you write this bit Graham? Yes, I can. I did.

DOWNLOAD Juggernauts, Zzzonked, Tribalism, The Jester, Sorry You’re Not A Winner, No Sleep Tonight, Mothership, Return To Energiser, Wall, Thumper, Kickin Back On The Surface Of Your Cheek. And wonder why you didn’t before...

Crystal Castles Canadian experimental electronica duo of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass. Their music has been described as “ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped one-dimensional Mario Paint loops and bruising drum bombast that beats into the heart with sheer shrill force, and burrowing deeply into the mind of free thought like a fever”. We’re not about to disagree. DOWNLOAD Celestica

RockNess Day 2 Saturday 12 June 2010 Leftfield Perhaps the highlight of the whole festival as Paul Daley and Neil Barnes reform and play for the first time in a decade. As the first act to truly combine house with dub and bring on board vocalists from other genres, their music sounds as fresh and thrilling today as when first released and their influence continues to seep through to all who followed. We’re expecting something triumphant.

DOWNLOAD Not Forgotten

Ian Brown Brown may have peaked long ago at the helm of the mighty Stone Roses, but his solo stuff can still engage, particularly live. Of course, right from the off the calls will be for some of the old classics and with luck he’ll oblige. DOWNLOAD I Am The Resurrection.

Aphex Twin The Marmite of electronica, but there’s no denying the imprint he’s made on modern music and the scope of his imagination. Let’s hope the live set gets across the twisted visions that inhabit his head.

DOWNLOAD Windowlicker

Soulwax Always welcome duo of David and Stephen Dewaele from Belgium, who’ll also be playing on Sunday under their 2ManyDJs moniker. Kings of the mash-up, it would be churlish not to tip our hats again to the fact that they had an album majestically titled “Most of the remixes we’ve made for other people over the years except for the one for Einstürzende Neubauten because we lost it and a few we didn’t think sounded good enough or just didn’t fit in length-wise, but including some that are hard to find because either people forgot about them or simply because they haven’t been released yet, a few we really love, one we think is just ok, some we did for free, some we did for money, some for ourselves without permission and some for friends as swaps but never on time and always at our studio in Ghent”. Excellent!

DOWNLOAD E Talking

Plan B Or Benjamin Paul Ballance Drew to give him his full name. Having been dismissed by many, the rapper from Forest Gate has brought some soul on board for his “Defamation of Strickland Banks” album and shot straight to the top of the charts. It’s the title of a film he’s directed too so expect something of a concept show.

DOWNLOAD Mama (Loves A Crackhead)

RockNess Day 3 Sunday 13 June 2010. The Strokes The men who made skinny jeans fashionable again and, for a while at least, restored New York’s status as the epicentre of louche, spiky rock and roll. They’ve never quite matched the vigour of their original assault on the senses, but perhaps self-imposed exile will have restored their mojo. Here’s the first chance to find out. DOWNLOAD Last Night

Vampire Weekend Way back when Orange Juice were experimenting with their own combination of Afrobeat and indie pop, little did they know that two decades later it would be refined and delivered with panache by an American act who give the impression they’ve just popped out of an Ivy League lacrosse match or stepped off a yacht at Martha’s Vineyard. Whatever the preconceptions, VW make a magnificent sound and the sun should come out during their set if it knows what’s good for it. DOWNLOAD Oxford Comma

Doves Doves’ original dance incarnation as Sub Sub actually influenced many of the acts playing this weekend, but having moved away from the whole Hacienda vibe that first spawned them, they’ve moved on to explore the kind of lyrical, Northern pop that will appeal to fans of Elbow and the like. A perfect soundtrack for the big landscapes of their surroundings.

DOWNLOAD Sky Starts Falling

Blondie The best pop group of all time. End of. While they might not have the pristine Lower East Side elegance of days gone by, the songs themselves are timeless and whatever your age, it’s impossible to deny the thrill that comes from realising, “That’s Debbie Harry.

There. Really.” DOWNLOAD Atomic

Dananananaykroyd Six-piece from Glasgow delivering what they call “Fight Pop” that’s spiritually closest to the irresistible clatter of The Fall and sonically unafraid to go up against Pavement, Fugazi and a host of other “post hardcore” combos. Spectacularly abandoned on stage, to the extent that physical injury is an ever present hazard, they should wake up even the weariest of Sunday revellers.

DOWNLOAD Totally Bone

THEATRE > PETIT MAL

PETIT MAL @ Eden Court, Tue 15 & Wed 16 Jun They’re calling this one a circus, but don’t expect any of that Charlie Cairoli/Billy Smart business. This production by the marvellous Race Horse Company posits itself far closer to the stuff you get from Pierrot Bidon’s Archaos or Cirque Du Soleil. Petit Mal is the first overseas work from RHC in collaboration with Circo Aereo and the show, they explain, is “a prime example of concrete circus: a combination of the tradition of village fools and performing art, where sweat and bruises embroider the skins of the performers. The show has no story or plot, and not much sense to speak of. It does not tell a story, but certainly has its fair share of action.” Formed by three Finnish acrobats: Petri Tuominen, Rauli Kosonen and Kalle Lehto, Race Horse Company proudly proclaim that they “intend to take the world by storm” and first set about doing so with a performance entitled Rusty Road Circus that has, in addition to Finland, toured in Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania. Now it’s time to spread their wings of “exceptional with break

and present us with a breathtaking mixture skill and faultless physicality combine dancing, martial arts and hip-hop movement, a Chinese pole,

wild

trampoline senseless and

solos, acrobatics disjointed

juggling.” Looks like being

something

very special indeed.

THEATRE > Peter Pan & Great Catle Raid

PETER PAN @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 01 Jun

D

on’t go expecting the panto now. This is an altogether more ambitious affair that finally does justice to Barrie’s original book, shearing it of sentimentality and making Wendy the protagonist. National Theatre of Scotland’s most expensive production to date, it utilises

a complex series of bungee harnesses to invest proceedings right from the opening scene (when Peter appears to walk straight down a wall) with a vigorous dynamism and genuine sense of wonder. The- largely unknown- actors have spent months practicing for the physical rigours and you can also expect some startling special effects, but there’s far more to it than just a lot of jumping about. John Tiffany, the director responsible for perhaps the greatest piece of theatre to have come out of Scotland in the past generation- Black Watch- has reunited three of the creative team from that show (sound designer Gareth Fry, musical director Davey Anderson and designer Laura Hopkins), so it’s clear right from the off that we’re in very good hands. And early reviews of the show are already suggesting it’s a landmark production, closer to the dark spirit of the original than has ever been seen before. We’re very, very excited about this one.

GREAT CATTLE RAID @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 15 Jun A bit of derring-do from days gone by as you get to see Eden Court’s Adult Drama Lab telling the epic tale of Cu Chulainn, the Irish mythological hero, who having killed the King of Ulster’s guardian hound, offers to take its place in defence of the realm until a replacement can be found. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of Queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge. A tale much darker than Macbeth it may be, but it’s apparently played “in a Carry On style” with ensemble physical-theatre acting. Interesting.

The Review: ASPENDOS 26 QUEENSGATE INVERNESS 01463 711950

M

id-May in Inverness and hailstones the size of boulders cascade off the pavement rattling out a welcome to another Invernessian summer. A day earlier, the city had actually submitted to sunshine and with tourists flocking to restaurants (as well as our own bona fide celebrity Karen Gillan dining in the Corner Grill) there was a vaguely utopian glimpse of how it’s supposed to be. Not, alas, today, with sogginess all around and plummeting temperatures making us wish simply for calorific fuel to ward off hypothermia. Not perhaps the best afternoon then to head for Aspendos, the newly opened Turkish restaurant on the site of the much-missed Jeera (and, before that, less thrilling Italian joint). You may have heard all the hoo-ha when Aspendos opened concerning their rather over-eager painting of the stonework outside, a genuine mistake now rectified. We were actually rather more concerned that, when the original hoardings went up, the word

“Mediterranean” was spelt wrong, which hardly inspired confidence in a place that used that region as its central culinary selling point. Despite such teething troubles, the enterprise appears to have hit the ground running and seems to have a healthy turnover of customers taking advantage of food that can’t be found elsewhere in town. Word has it that the couple who run it have come up from London, where there’s far more of an entrenched Mediterranean food culture and even the ropiest of kebab shops are miles better than those found up here. They must have been genuinely shocked at the kind of rubbish that gets crammed into pitas in the Highlands and hopefully by demonstrating how such things really should taste they’ll go at least some way towards forcing everywhere else to raise their game. The restaurant (even in previous incarnations) has always had one of the best spaces in town, with high ceilings, plenty of light and an open kitchen at the back. The new owners have kept the look simple, adding only some large photos of Mediterranean climes,

though the tables could do with being a little larger. Particularly with what’s on offer. The intended mood is, one presumes of some faraway place in the sun where hours can be whiled away over food and drink. And, at the heart of such a dining experience is the Mixed Mezze, something that requires a far larger space than our allocated table for two to be entirely comfortable. And so to said Mezze, the main attraction at £9.95 a head and seemingly the best introduction to the cuisine, offering a taster of a dozen different dishes. While we were waiting, the charming and friendly waitress (and co-owner?) brought bowls of humus, olives and warm bread, all of which were top notch, preparing us for what lay ahead. And, just moments later the full Monty is brought to the table immediately covering just about every space. As mentioned earlier, the pouring rain didn’t provide the most inspirational of backdrops to a Mediterranean spread, but there was certainly enough colourful and fresh-tasting fare to bring some Southern European spirit to proceedings.

So what do you get? Well, working across the table, here’s what was tickling our taste buds.

Humus - A slightly different colour to that offered earlier, and even tastier. Rich, pureed chickpeas with tahini, garlic, cumin, lemon juice and a little pool of olive oil. Delish. Borek - Resembling samosas in shape, these deep fried filo pastry concoctions contain spinach and feta cheese. Though supposedly freshly cooked they were only warm and lacked crispness. Tastewise they couldn’t be faulted, with spinach and feta cheese a tried-and-trusted combination made in heaven. Kisir - Crushed walnuts, hazelnuts, bulgur wheat, tomato juice, herbs, peppers and onions.

My companion, not subscribing like me to the theory that nuts might be the devil’s work, gave this unusual dish the thumbs up, suggesting that there might even be a welcome chilli presence. Looked nice, I’ll give it that.

Cacik - Yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and mint. No surprises here, but nice balance of ingredients and suitably zingy. Maydonoz Salatasi - Chopped parsley salad with tabuleh, bulgar, tomatoes, onions and olive oil. Terrifically healthy looking. And, indeed tasting. Nice to be able to appreciate the taste of parsley as an ingredient rather than just an afterthought. Lovely. Falafel - Chickpea fritters, but a world away from the cardboard pucks you get elsewhere. Packed

with flavour, but again, could have done with being a bit hotter. Had they perhaps been sitting around for a while?

Zeytinyagli Bakla- The greatest revelation of the whole meal. Broad beans, red and green peppers, garlic, coriander, dill and olive oil served with yoghurt. As someone who’d always assumed broad beans to be the very definition of “meh”, these were fantastic. Moist and tasty, matched perfectly by the creamy Greek yoghurt and herbs. I’m a broad bean convert and fully intend hoisting a placard outside the ICA offices to emphasise the fact. Midye Tava- From the sublime to the downright peculiar. There are many way to serve mussels and make them delicious. Threading

three on a skewer and deep frying them isn’t one of them. Especially since, once more, these were lukewarm at best. Perhaps you need a beach and blazing sunshine to bring out the taste.

Kalamar Tava- Another disappointment. I would have expected the kitchen to be able to deliver calamari with aplomb, but these were chewy and enclosed in sad, soggy batter. Dolma- Finally, and thankfully, another success. Vine leaves stuffed with rice, pine kernels, sultanas and herbs, another dish that’s often a travesty, but which here retained just the right level of sweetness and succulence. Just the tableful of dishes then and, as you can see, fairly wildly varying in quality. The stuff that was done well however suggested that the talent is most definitely there, so we’ll certainly give them the benefit of the doubt. It would have been nice if the mezze had included a few meat dishes (a couple of which are offered in the £6.95 set lunch deal), since that’s one of the finest aspects of Mediterranean cuisine. From the menu proper there are all sorts of tempting meat options from lamb shank and rich

chicken stew to moussaka and lamb kofte as well as an array of delicious sounding fish. With most coming in around the ten quid mark though, you get the feeling that, like us, most will make for the mezze option, missing out on a whole other world of possibilities. If they priced the mains at, say, £7, you get the feeling the queues would stretch halfway down the street. There’s a short, but suitably authentic dessert menu, from which we had Sutlac (rice pudding with rosewater, orange rind and cinnamon, served cold) and a rather splendid Chocolate Pudding (a close Turkish relative of the chocolate blancmange and just as delicious), rounding off an intriguing meal that always seemed half a heartbeat away from being very special. Hopefully the folk in the kitchen were merely thrown off their stride like the rest of us by the torrential, distinctly non-Mediterranean weather. And, when the sun deigns to shine once more, we’ll definitely be back for what, at its best, could be the closest Inverness has ever had to authentic Turkish cuisine. Total for 2 (exc. drinks £26.30)

[ health • style • beauty • fitness ] Why do we wear jewellery? from Hazel Passmore Because jewellery, like clothes is a means of expression – some of us are more flamboyant in our dress sense and we’re the same with jewellery. Status, sentiment and superstition are the principal reasons why we wear jewellery, for example - The Ring. Whether a plain circle or something more elaborate it has many associations and makes many powerful statements. To the wearer and observer alike, it can symbolise a variety of states and qualities: love and marriage, authority and station, accomplishment, familial bonds or even moods. It can evoke a memory, transmit a message, signal a rite of passage, symbolise social, political or religious affiliations, advertise status and express personal style. A ring can also be pure adornment, fun or vanity. We reveal and express ourselves through our jewellery, clothes, tattoos and piercings. We are the curators of our own personal exhibitions, for jewellery to tell its story it needs a wearer. Artefacts remaining from earliest history show that jewellery has been a potent and universal part of human experience. Shells, beads, stones and then metal have been fashioned to adorn the human body to create images of power and status, magic and desire. Such an indelible, human history offers a rich vein to be mined for the contemporary jeweller.

Don’t Bake It – Fake It! from Ellen at Charisma

It’s that time of year again when we ‘dare to bare’ a little flesh as the temperatures begin to rise and the sun starts to shine but which method is the best to give us that instant sun-kissed colour? Spray Tanning: This quick method uses a spray gun to apply the product and can be done manually or automatically. This can be applied in a salon or in the comfort of your own home. The effects can last 8-10 days. Sunbeds: With this procedure UV rays that affect the deep and top layers of the skin are omitted. In recent years the adverse effects of this procedure have been well publicised. Tanning Pills: These are taken orally and contain caretenoid pigments and tyrosine pigments which change the skin colour they saturate the fatty layers below the skin. Tanning Lotions: Some of the most popular products are St.Tropez, Fake Bake, Sienna and Xen Tan. They are comprised of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which interacts with dead skin cells causing the skin to change colour. The effect lasts 5-7 days. This method is completely safe however some precautions still have to be considered such as: Seek advice from your GP if you are taking any medication such as antihistamines or the birth control pill as they may interfere with the action of the products. Prior to application carry out a patch test. Don’t be tempted by the cheapest products, they can be harmful and can give the skin an orange tint. For an even lasting tan exfoliate the skin and dry thoroughly prior to application. After application wear loose clothing and stay free of make up, lotions, perfumes etc. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can go out into the sun unprotected because you have a tan, sunscreen still needs to be applied. Sunless tanning is cost effective, convenient, fast and above all else safe.

have been around for thousands of years in the form of primitive facial tattooing, but thankfully today, it is a very safe and painless procedure due to the high standards in the industry and the excellent topical anaesthetics used. Permanent Cosmetics, also known as Semi-permanent Makeup or Micropigmentation, is a form of cosmetic tattooing which places pharmaceutical grade pigment into the dermal layer of the skin, giving very natural looking results. The main procedures are natural hair stroke brows, eyeliner and lip contour

and colour blush. Many women (and men too) have lost their brow hair due to medical conditions. Eyebrows frame the face and many clients say it is very liberating not to have to draw them on every day. The technique can also be used for medical work such as replicating realistic areolas and nipples on reconstructed breasts following surgery, scar camouflage and cleft lip repair among other things. Janet Miller has been trained by Nouveau Contour’s elite trainers and has several years experience working in North London and Dublin. She is now

ICA PROPERTY:

Property Upturn Persists What a difference a year makes. In 2009, good news from the property market was thin on the ground with things marginally picking up towards the end of the year. Twelve months on and today’s property picture looks rosy by comparison. According to the Registers of Scotland (RoS), 14,662 properties were sold in Scotland from January to March this year, which translates into a hike of 25% on the same period 12 months ago. To give some perspective on

sponsored by HSPC.co.uk

these numbers, and to illustrate how dire 2009 was, the RoS quarterly figures from a year ago dropped to 11,799; the lowest results since 2003. The turnaround has certainly been welcomed, especially within residential sector where sales are up 30.9%. Flats, in particular, have seen a return to form recording the largest price increase of all; up 7% but the good news nationally has been echoed specifically by the fortunes of the Highland property market which is experiencing something of its own resurgence. The latest statistics from HSPC show the value of properties sold in the Highlands during April was up 40% compared to this time last year. Indeed, with £17 million of homes sold, the all-important monthly figures were up £4.85 million. And that’s not all. As well

hspc.co.uk | 01463 231173 | 30 queensgate inverness

as the value of properties sold showing signs of recovery, the number of properties exchanging hands was also up. For instance, the total number of houses sold in April reached 106 compared to 75 last year. That’s an increase of 41% and the highest tally in 2010 easily beating the year’s previous best of 91 set in March. Add to this a 3% jump in the rolling quarterly price average and a 5% increase in enquiries made to HSPC’s website during April and you could be forgiven for thinking these were the first signs of a more substantial upturn. Although this April’s figures have been encouraging, there is still a long way for the market to beat the results from 2007, when no less than 156 properties were sold for a combined value of £26.8 million.

A couple of the HSPC team are taking part in the Moonlight

Q) I am a first time buyer and do not have a large deposit, what options do I have. Firstly there are a number of competitively priced properties in the first time buyer range of 1 – 2 bedrooms. This will let you compare value for money and living space. Lenders are now in the position to increase their lending limits and lower deposits, some are offering products as high as 90% lending. The larger the deposit you have to put down the more competitive rate you can achieve. At HSPC Mortgage Services we are classed as Whole of Market advisers which means we can shop around the market place and also have access to

exclusive products that are only available through intermediaries. Another option to consider is purchasing through Albyn Housing under the LIFT Scheme. At HSPC Mortgage Services we work in close contact with Albyn when arranging finance for our clients. The LIFT scheme might only require a 5% deposit depending on your credit score. This option is classed as a Shared Equity scheme and not every lender will accept this type of scheme. As much as 40% of the property valuation/purchase price can be funded through Albyn under this type of scheme. This also has the effect of reducing your loan to value allowing access to more competitively priced interest rates. We at HSPC Mortgage Services help you through the whole process of application

to arranging the relevant information and documentation required. This type of application will require a number of quotes and an agreement in principle from a lender to provide you the finance after a credit search and assessment. There are a number of new build developments currently due for completion. This is an extremely popular scheme so we would suggest contacting us to discuss your next steps. Q) Do you charge fees for your service. No, we do not charge but be aware some Brokers do, so it is best to clarify this early in the process. There are possible booking fees

from certain lenders and more competitive products. This is an area we will go into in detail with you to calculate the size of loan in relation to the fee the lender is charging and term of the chosen product to determine value for money. As mentioned previously we are Whole of Market advisers so we do the work and source this for you as there is a massive choice returning to the Market place, ranging from what’s most important to you – i.e. competitive interest rate , maximum borrowing amount or any credit issues. Q) I am interested in Buy to Let, what is the maximum I can borrow. We have just had notification

from one of the specialist Buy to Let lenders that they are now lending up to 80% loan to value. I believe this shows that there is now a more competitive edge returning to the Mortgage Market. On a general overview as more competition is returning to the Mortgage Market this is having the effect of reducing rates and fees offered by lenders. You may do as you please with God now. It is permitted. God placed Himself in men’s hands when He sent Jesus Christ into the world as perfect God and perfect Man in one Being. He was then in man’s hands. They cursed Him. It was permitted. Men spit on Him. God allowed it. They called Him a devil. God withheld His wrath. Finally men arrested Him, gave Him a mock trial, flogged Him, nailed Him on a cross and hung Him between earth and heaven; and God allowed it. You can do likewise, though Christ is not bodily present. You can ignore Him.

You can ignore His Book, the Bible and His church. You can laugh at His bloodbought salvation, curse His followers, and laugh at hell. It is permitted. The eternal Christ may knock at your soul’s door, calling you to give up sin and prepare for heaven. You may refuse Him, spit on Him, call Him a devil, curse Him. It is permitted. You may take His Name upon your lips in oaths and curses if you so choose. He is in your hands - now. On the other hand, you may seek His favor, humble yourself before Him and beg His mercy, implore His forgiveness, forsake your sins, and abandon your whole life to Him. He has said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20

God has already set the day when you will be in His hands. What He does with you then depends on what you do with Him now. Then it will be a “fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” Hebrews 10:31, if you have abused Him in your hands. In that day God will have only two verdicts: “Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” Matthew 25:41, or “enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” Matthew 25:21. The verdict that will fall upon you depends on what you do with Christ now. The Lord Jesus Christ is the only shelter in the day of God’s wrath; He is the appointed expression of God’s love to us, demonstrated in His life, death, and resurrection. Through the touch of the Holy Spirit, He continues His love, moving upon our human spirit and prompting our human conscience. You have no connection with God or with heaven but through the Lord Jesus Christ. There is “one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…” I Timothy 2:5 You may choose to be neutral, but that is delusion. You may postpone decision, so to speak. But, to the ear of God, the postponement is a flat “no.” This is your day. He is in your hands. In God’s day, when you are in His hands, there will be no postponement of sentence, no neutral place between heaven and hell, no mediator between God and man. No mediator - for He who is now mediator has already been appointed to be Judge in that day.

Friend, listen! if you want mercy and pardon, you will have to get it now. God loves you, Christ died as a substitute for your sins on the cross. You have to receive Him for yourself; no-one can do it for you. But do it now.

But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, Romans 5:8 while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

BUSINESS GATEWAY HELPS 4X4 GET INTO GEAR. Adrenaline junkies looking for a special thrill are heading to Inverness to take advantage of the city’s latest exhilarating outdoor experience. Launched earlier this year, with help from Business Gateway, Inverness 4x4 Adventure Ltd (www.inverness4x4adventure.co.uk) offers visitors a breathtaking off road driving experience with the country’s highest ‘see saw’ providing the ultimate driving challenge.

“The business is doing well,” says Director, FIONA BERRY. “My fellow director, MALCOLM MACKINTOSH, and I started in February but things really began motoring in March. We have a range of courses and vehicles to suit every level of driver and as a result we have had everyone from kids to pensioners out in our Land Rover Discoverys and Suzuki Vitara.” When Fiona and Malcolm started out they knew that an effective marketing campaign would be critical to let people know they were open for business and that was when the pair turned to Business Gateway.

“Our adviser, Mark, has been great and has really helped us out with the marketing side of things and with networking,” says Fiona. “He helped us secure some much needed funding which has allowed us to get our signage and promotional literature sorted.” Despite the business being at an early stage, Business Gateway adviser, Mark Mackintosh believes the company has what it takes to succeed.

“Inverness 4x4 Adventure is a great business and Fiona and Malcolm have the drive and enthusiasm to make a real success of the venture,” says Mark. “It is important that the right support is available to them in the months ahead and as such we are continuing to support Fiona and Malcolm as they look to develop the business. “ A full programme of June events can be found at www.highland-opportunity.com or by calling 01463 713889, however highlights over the coming weeks include the following: 2 Day Business Start Up – Thursday, June 10th and Friday, June 11th Understanding Finance – Thursday, June 17th Going Into Business – Friday, June 25th All the above courses run from 9.30am-4pm and are held in Ness Horizon, Kintail House, Inverness. KEN KELMAN: Fashionista Extraordinaire...

I

expect by now you will have seen at least a few pictures from this year’s ICA awards so I’m guessing my humiliation will already be apparent to you. Not the fact that I didn’t win I’m not bitter about that; Billy Morrison’s far more deserving than I. No, I’m happy with my 17% of the popular vote - though I’d like to say I am willing to talking to Kit, Marion or Terry on the subject of finding some common ground and forming an alliance to maybe take the shiny disc off him. The humiliation I’m thinking of is you noticing that I’m wearing the same blazer as I did last year. The problem is I got it last year, all special like, for the awards and wore it as a bold fashion statement, then ‘Jedward’ came along with similar outfits and it’s been in the wardrobe ever since in case anyone thought I’d copied them when clearly the reverse is true. Anyway discussions with myself as to what I should wear to this year’s ceremony weren’t going too well, I had a nice dinner suit and natty yellow bow tie which due to the continued eruption of Eyjafjallajökull I hadn’t been able to wear earlier this year, but I feared this might be a bit too formal. At previous ICA awards I’ve noticed many others wear jeans and t-shirts, sometimes even with a good couple of inches of underwear visible at the waist – honestly! people really do go out looking like that. Then I had the idea that if I could get a nice pair of yellow shoes that, along with the yellow bow tie would temper the dinner jacket a bit and I’d not look so over-dressed. From the photos though you’ll realise that I had another crisis of fashion-conscious and long-story-short decided against that, settling on a new blue gingham shirt, four-quid yellow trainers, the bow tie and last year’s blazer worn ironically (and some trousers, obviously). The amusing part of this story involves the tying of the bow tie, which I thought I’d have a go at at 4 in the afternoon – a good four hours before it needed to be tied – plenty time to get it right. However the first attempt resulted in the best tied bow tie I’ve ever managed, there was no way I’d be able to better or even equal it, the problem was I wasn’t dressed yet (don’t tell me you’ve never tried a bow tie on in the nude before .. actually I was wearing a t-shirt – yes, and some trousers, what is it with you?). Carefully I removed my t-shirt over the top of the tie, then got washed and cleaned my teeth, being extra careful to avoid splashing – you don’t want to have to explain away white tooth-paste stains on your yellow bow tie, not at an awards ceremony. The difficult part was manoeuvring the collar of my gingham shirt up under the tie and making it look pretty with out the tie untying itself .. which I’m pleased to say I did manage, then I sat for three hours watching television wearing a yellow bow tie - a first for me. Finally .. I expect you might be wondering about the snappy logo adorning this page? .. glance down now then if you haven’t noticed it. Cool eh? Let’s just for the moment say it’s for a wee project I’m involved with. Let’s not say “what’s that coming over the hill?” - but maybe think it. If you’re confused, all will be revealed soon, just make sure you have fresh batteries in your radio, come September. That’s what’s known in the trade as a teaser, do you feel teased? .. do you?
