. . .in anyway whatsoever - by the Queen’s Jubilee? By the Olympic Torch visit? We can buy that some people really like the Queen and that rather more really like the Olympics - but to be honest, we do not buy that the Jubilee or Torch warrant any excitement at all. Which is why the powers that be chuck a bit of fluff on top - like face painting or Emili Sandé - to see if that will bring us out to join in. But really, if you think about it, that makes the celebration about as genuine as those rent-a-crowds we saw jumping up and down in ‘support’ of Mr Putin in Russia. Don’t give us fluff. Don’t ask us to jump up and down with sponsored ‘joy’. More Pussy Riot, less subjugation. Sorry about that - but really, just because there’s going to be SO MUCH guff in column inches and broadcast hours devoted to all that hoopla and we want to draw your attention to some events that are REALLY interesting, for instance: 1. A multi-award-winning music festival with a great line up - albeit that isn’t in much evidence locally. But it is coming to Dores and you know it... 2. One of Scotland’s genuinely world-renowned achievers, Michael Clark, brings his truly awesome take on contemporary dance to Eden Court. 3. The visit to the beautiful heritage site of Cawdor Castle by the BBC’s own vintage collector’s item, Fiona Bruce The Antiques Roadshow. 4. The Highlands’ Celtic Connections, Bruce MagGregor’s Northern Roots Festival is primed and ready to go. 5. The Return to Inverness city centre of the music industry showcase event, GoNorth. Two days of intensely MUSICY activity. Of course it’s a word... 6. Various excellent art events - including work from Michael Forbes, Rosie Newman and... Ricky Gervais. 7. Your last chance to land that elusive 360o inward heelflip at the Bught skate park before it is redeveloped - Inverness Ramp Jam. 8. Doh, all that ranting and we’ve run out of space... just go read the mag! > CONTENTS ROAD .......................................................... BELLE URUS... Lamborghini for everyday family use? Really?! Well, come 2015, apparently so. This is the new Urus SUV concept - which comes with a bold but highly attractive promise: to be the most powerful production SUV on the market - and yet the least polluting. Admirable. How powerful? Over six hundred horses powerful. How so little emissions? Lightweight design and technology. Using innovative materials - such as their patented carbon fibre ‘Forged Composite’ - not only for the exterior but throughout the interior as well. The style is unmistakably Lamborghini, yet this is highly practical with generous room for 4 passengers - even though it comes in at just 1.66m high - and plenty of luggage to boot (arf). As yet the powertrain is not revealed, but whispers abound of possible hybrid drives or V8 forced air. Start saving... Would you drive one? ROSIE NEWMAN, one of our most inventive local artists, brings her latest exhibition, SOMETIMES I FEEL MORE AWAKE WHEN I’M ASLEEP [1], to IG:LU [at 19 Church Street] from FRI 01–15 JUN. So, what can you expect? Well, “each room uses different objects to comment on our drive to find a time and a space of our own”, says Rosie - and “the use of an eclectic mix of materials, such as TVs, moss, prison beds and sheep and the actual use of the space inside and out, invites the viewer to discover and engage with his own space”. IG:LU continues to provide a space for groundbreaking art in its many forms and this looks like one of the most fascinating shows yet. Newman’s work can also be seen at THE BIG SEE (cancer show) [2], a charity exhibition at INCHMORE GALLERY from 16 JUN–07 JUL. The original idea came from Simon Berry whose wife Colleen Godley sadly died from thymic cancer last summer, leaving around 25 untitled paintings which she had never shown. “I know Colleen would have been overwhelmed to have her first exhibition in the company of these artists, many of whom she admired very much,” he says. New gallery owner Jane Owen Inglis has agreed to make a donation for every piece of artwork sold to allow everyone to share the benefits of the show. This means that each of the 15 artists will be showing two works, one a straight donation and one on a ‘Business As Usual’ basis which means a smaller but still significant donation goes to the charity. In addition there will be prints available, produced and mounted/framed at a discount by local business Alder Arts. All profits will go to Maggie’s. As well as Newman, there’ll be top art from CLARE BLOIS, KIRSTIE COHEN, ALEX DUNN, EVA FABER, MICHAEL FORBES, COLLEEN GODLEY, JAMES HAWKINS, JENNIFER HOULISTON, GERALD LAING, ALLAN MACDONALD, INGEBORG SMITH, ERLEND TAIT, PAMELA TAIT, EUGENIE VRONSKAYA - and (as if all that talent wasn’t enough), by special invitation, first time exhibitor RICKY GERVAIS !! Finally, you should head along to EDEN COURT for MOVING STORIES [3], which runs from 08 JUN–24 JUL - an interactive exhibition highlighting how people can get involved with their parliament. It tells of ten Scots who through campaigning and engaging with the political process have made a real difference to Scotland. The subjects include GEMMA MACKINTOSH, who campaigned on behalf of young people with visual impairments, and WALTER BAXTER, who campaigned to stop the closure of specialist units for people with brain injuries.

ROMANCE

Promethian Visions. In a commercial break during the magnificent Homeland, Channel 4 billed something of a show-within-a-show, screening an extended trailer for PROMETHEUS [1] and encouraging viewers to tweet their responses to what they’d seen. It was an unprecedented tactic for the channel, but just one of the ways that the movie has looked to capitalise on all sorts of marketing techniques. Look online and you’ll find not only news about the film and a variety of trailers, but also a host of associated information taking in fake lectures, fictitious business websites and more. Check out http://tinyurl.com/d3f3g62 and for just two of the best examples. Why the fuss? Well, directed by RIDLEY SCOTT, it’s unofficially the prequel to his groundbreaking Alien, or at least, according to the director, sharing its DNA and occupying the same universe. Set in the late 21st century, the crew of the spaceship Prometheus follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth civilizations. Led to a distant world and an advanced culture, the crew seeks the origins of humanity, but instead discovers a threat that could lead to the extinction of the human race. And it looks spectacular. Will it live up to the hype? You’ll have to go and see when it opens on 01 JUN. One of the stars of Alien (though not in Prometheus) was SIGOURNEY WEAVER and she co stars with ROBERT DE NIRO in the forthcoming RED LIGHTS [2] which opens on 22 JUN (tbc). Written and directed by RODRIGO CORTES, it finds Weaver playing a psychologist studying paranormal activity who ends up investigating a supposed psychic. De Niro takes on what’s known in Hollywood circles as “the Derek Acorah” role which, one imagines will involve much scenery-chewing and be all the more enjoyable for that. Spirituality of a rather more measured sort and essential viewing for anyone intending going to see the Dalai Lama’s visit comes in the shape of DALAI LAMA RENAISSANCE [3] at EDEN COURT on MON 11 JUN at 8.15pm, a documentary narrated by HARRISON FORD that provides an excellent introduction to the life and thoughts of the man himself. The DL, not Ford. Elsewhere in this issue you can read about the musical treats in store when GONORTH comes to town on 06 & 07 JUN. There’s also a load of FILM SCREENINGS [4] taking place during the event and though final details have yet to be announced, we’re promised some particularly innovative shorts and a wealth of new talent. Wild Wild Life People are talking of the star of AN AUDIENCE WITH STEVE BACKSHALL [1] (EDEN COURT, SAT 30 JUN) as “the next David Attenborough”. Although it’s unlikely anyone in the future will come even close to equalling the achievements of such a legend of broadcasting and the popularisation of natural history, Backshall is making significant inroads into the consciousness, particularly of youngsters, with his CBBC outings as well as more “grown up” accounts of forays into the wild. He’ll be talking about his many expeditions, including clips of the animals that have inspired him. And no doubt plugging his foray into fiction in the form of the novel “Tiger Wars”. See below for details of how you can win a copy. There are two shows, one at 2.30pm, the other at 7pm, with opportunities for Q&As at each. www.eden-court.co.uk 01463 234234 Wildlife from rather more fanciful realms in the form of TREEBADOUR PUPPET THEATRE at JAMES MILNE INSTITUTE in FINDHORN on SAT 09 JUN, when “Kasper and Crocodile visit Nessie”, something Backshall would no doubt love to capture on film. The Treebadour posse are at the Institute every Saturday in Jun, with a whole range of puppet shows for those aged three and upwards. Ring 01309 691225 or visit www.treebadour.co.uk for details. The Imaginate Festival is a touring enterprise, bringing theatre to kids and youngsters across Scotland – and the Inverness stop consists of MIKEY AND ADDIE (EDEN COURT ONETOUCH, MON 25 JUN, 1.30PM). Presented by Andy Manley, Rob Evans and ‘macrobert’, it’s a fast paced, funny, emotional tale about the problems of growing up, specifically those of the kids of the title, living in a world wrapped up in secrets and lies. Sounds intriguing.

Kate Coyne, photo: Jake Walters

KATE COYNE: dancer with Michael Clark Co.

EDEN COURT, Fri 08 Jun

Fans of modern dance will be excited at the prospect of its finest exponents, MICHAEL CLARK COMPANY coming to EDEN COURT. As a dancer, he pushed the boundaries with some panache and his company continues to attract critical acclaim, their Inverness show, “come, been and gone” being perhaps their most celebrated. Made primarily to the music of David Bowie and The Velvet Underground, it’s packed with show-stopping moments, many of which feature dancer KATE COYNE. WE asked her to tell us more: What’s your earliest memory of wanting to dance? I have known that I wanted to dance for as long as I can remember. I was putting improvisational dance shows on for my family by the time I was four. What was it about the art form that inspired you to make a career of it? I never questioned that I would take dance as far as I could, and even having achieved professional status, there is always room for improvement! Was it important to get a classical training? Where did you

do that? It was important to me to have a classical training- as a child and into my teens I wanted to be a ballet dancer. Besides, a classical training in anything is never wasted. I made a deal with my parents that if I passed 10 O levels I would be allowed to go and train as a dancer at 16. I passed them and then went to the Royal Ballet School. How did you make the leap, both metaphorical and literal into Michael Clark’s company? Was it a tough transition or liberating? I had wanted to work for Michael for years. The opportunity to meet him as a potential dancer arose and I got a job. Since then I have leaped when asked to. Tough transition? No, it was a choice. When Michael’s coming up with a piece, what kind of input is there from the dancers? The input from the dancers when we are working on a piece is like that of any medium in an art form- we are there to show the ideas to the best of our ability. We try to produce the choreography as clearly as we can. You’ve been doing “come, been and gone” for several years now. How does it change as the years go by? The piece changes subtly over time. Theatres are different so adaptations are made, dancers change within the company and Michael likes to improve on work rather than let a piece stagnate. Your most notorious solo involves performing while embellished with oversized syringes to the song “Heroin”. How do you ensure that you communicate more than just shock value? I simply try to dance the steps as physically well as I can. I don’t think about the shock value- surely the lyrics to the song are more shocking than the costume? How would you convince sceptical classical ballet fans that modern dance isn’t just a load of old hokum? I wouldn’t even contemplate persuading a sceptic- ballet fan or otherwise that modern dance isn’t a load of hokum. Curious people will go and see what they find potentially interesting. I would have more interest in what they might think. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from Michael? Good things come to those who wait.... What’s been your most thrilling moment as a dancer? The day I got my first job. What does the future hold for you? If you woke up tomorrow and couldn’t dance, what would you do? I guess that’s when the O levels will finally come in handy!

come, been and gone is at EDEN COURT on FRI 08 JUN

After a few years rotating between various Scottish cities, it’s now based each year in Inverness, bringing industry folk from across Britain and indeed the world, to a series of gigs, seminars, panel discussions and more. This year sharpened to a two-day format on WED 06 & THU 07 JUN, the industry-targeted discussions take place in the MERCURE HOTEL (still better known to many as the Caley Hotel), taking in all sorts of chinwags about the state of the music industry, how to take advantage of new technology, tips for bringing your band to wider attention and the like. For the general public, perhaps what’s of most interest is the absolute cavalcade of gigs taking place simultaneously in venues across town - all invariably free to enter. The best way to experience it tends to be by going from bar to bar, venue to venue and just taking in what’s going on. You’ll be guaranteed to stumble across someone you’ve never heard of before, but who you’ll be able to boast about loving first to all your mates. Always a great atmosphere about town on these nights. There’s an online programme at www.gonorth.biz, but names to look out for include Edinburgh’s DEAD BOY ROBOTICS, PLUM and CANCEL THE ASTRONAUTS, Glaswegian combos FRENCH WIVES, CAMPFIRE IN WINTER and VIGO THIEVES, plus local acts like HE SLEPT ON 57, IAN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS, CLEAVERS and TEAM KAPOWSKI. Sometimes it’s almost better that you don’t know what a band is going to sound like beforehand, just being drawn to the names. For that reason alone, Dundee’s FAT GOTH are high up our must-see list. The other reason hordes will be flocking here this month is, of course, ROCKNESS. Strange to think that there was a time just a few short years ago when it wasn’t a fixture on the international festival scene, but now, with the best setting in the land, it’s become the go-to weekend for those who want something a little less post-apocalyptically intense than T In The Park. The biggest disappointment this year is the cancellation of a longawaited appearance by the magnificent AZEALIA BANKS [2], but METRONOMY, BIFFY and JUSTICE should make it fun. There’s even a headline slot from the MUMFORDS for posh boys who want to pretend to own farms. Wellie-tastic. After the post GoNorth & RockNess dustclouds have settled, why not use your new found sense of musical adventure to see if you can get into the TWO WINGS [3] gig at the intimate IG:LU on SAT 16 JUN. The Glasgow combo ably assisted by the curious tenderness of ERIC CHENAUX and a unique ‘unplugged’ type set from tremendous local supergroup LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS. Read more about it on P26 >>>

a collaboration between two Indian and two Scottish musicians who combine Indian classical and Scottish traditional backgrounds to create a unique sound. Since their debut album Reels and Ragas, they have developed their music to reflect the broad common ground between their traditions. Many raga gats (themes), particularly those from the borders of the Himalayas, have close relatives in the melodies of the Scottish highlands and islands, and for both of them the drone sounds of the bagpipes or the tampura play an important part in the music. Recent performances have included the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, and the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. Featuring Ross Ainslie on pipes, whistles and cittern. indiaalba.com. Much-blooged Glasgow band, TWO WINGS, are one of the most extraordinary combos we’ve heard in ages, but trying to describe what they sound like is quite a different matter. With musical styles picked from all over the place, the only constant is an alluring unpredictability, filtered through Finnish-blooded frontwoman HANNA TUULIKKI and guitarist BEN REYNOLDS, ex of the highly-regarded Trembling Bells. With a debut album out this month, they conclude a nationwide tour with a performance at IG:LU. We asked Ben to tell us more: RED HOOK RAPIDS @ Market Bar Highland acoustic duo.

The music you make has been described as everything from Americana and free-folk to “nu wyrd dad rock” and often each song sounds like it’s been made by a completely different band. THE BLACKOUT & ATTACK! ATTACK! (ACOUSTIC) @ Ironworks Here’s an odd thing and no mistake - front men from alt rockers The Blackout and Attack! Attack! are setting aside their customary musical ferocity and are going all Peters & Lee on our metal asses... Well, perhaps not fully, but close enough to pique our interest. How did the band get together? “Hanna Tuulikki and I were occasional collaborators and touring partners for a few years until we finally decided to write some songs together. We performed together as a duo for a short while, but we always had all these ideas in our head of how the songs might be taken further with a band. So, we asked some friends to jam with us (Initially Kenny Wilson and David Hayward and later Lucy Duncombe and Owen Curtis Williams) and ended up with a band called Two Wings.”

Dear Old Thing You want heritage? You got it. Starting with the visit of perhaps the country’s greatest institution, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW [1] to CAWDOR CASTLE on THU 21 JUN. A fine opportunity to bring out all those keepsakes that have been in the family for generations and, who knows, there might even be a hidden gem. Expect enough locks of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s hair to fill a mattress. The event is bound to be popular so get there early. It runs from 9.30am-4.30pm. More info at www.cawdorcastle.com The Roadshow’s Fiona Bruce will always be our Queen of TV, but apparently there’s a bit of a fuss going on about another royal. While perhaps not as large scale as the pageantry down in London, there are still a number of special events taking place in and around Inverness to mark the QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE [2]. On MON 04 JUN commencing at 7.30pm there will be a special Service of Thanksgiving in St Stephens Church in Church Street, followed by the Inverness Beacon being lit at 10pm above Inverness Castle and a short fireworks display. There are plenty more events happening to celebrate the event, running right through to 16 JUN. See listings for more and also whatsoninverness.com, invernessfestivals.com. The Queen might be celebrating sixty years, but the original Olympics took place for over 1200 without break (the modern version has already cancelled three tournaments because of war). Imagine, if the “new” version had begun in 1066 – it’d still have 40 years to go before matching the longevity of its predecessor. On 10 May, the torch was lit by the Greek sun (a different sun to the Scottish version which emits no heat) and is now touring the UK before moseying down to London. Its journey through the Highlands on SAT 09 JUN is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime moment - a whole day of events surrounding the torch’s journey conclude with a concert at NORTHERN MEETING PARK starting at 4pm, headlined by EMELI SANDÉ. The OLYMPIC TORCH [3] arrives at the CALEDONIAN CANAL BRIDGE around 6pm carried along GLENURQUHART ROAD, KENNETH STREET, CHAPEL STREET, FRIARS LANE, BANK STREET, YOUNG STREET and NESS WALK before entering Northern Meeting Park. See www.invernessfestivals.com for more details. There are more related events taking place around the area which you can read about in our listings. >>>>

Parklife. Good times to be a skater in Inverness, with news that, under the auspices of Highland Skate Parks Association (HSPA), a registered charity both encouraging participation and improving facilities at sites in Inverness [2] and Muir Of Ord, plans are in place for a brand new £300,000 state-of-the-art park. Planning permission has been granted and fundraising is underway – your own chance to help out comes with the last INVERNESS RAMP JAM [1] at the BUGHT PARK site on SAT 16 JUN. On the day you’ll be able to hear all about the plans for the new park as well as several other projects that are - perhaps literally - in the pipeline, as well as, of course, taking in the best of the competition on offer. Open to skateboarders, BMX and inline skates, entry fee for all competitors will be £3. All spectators admitted free. There will be a 16 and under category and 17+ in all three sports, with a big prize fund as always and even the chance for the crowd to take home some swag, as prizes are thrown to the gathered multitudes. While HSPA are approaching as many funders as they can, every penny helps so you can make a difference as all the entry fees for the events will go towards the £300K budget. Sponsors this year are Creative Skate Store and Monster Bike. DJ’s Highland Junglists and Boomshank Redemption will be playing all day. And there are burgers and great grub from Wee Highland Catering. The whole shebang runs from 11am–6pm. Should be good. SPORT

Make A Song & Dance About It The world of modern dance, much like that of modern art, is as divisive as it is enthralling, too often alienating potential fans with all kinds of explicatory guff and forgetting that the power lies in the form itself. If you’re looking for the best way in though, then you can do no better than this month’s cover stars the MICHAEL CLARK COMPANY [1], whose COME, BEEN AND GONE graces EDEN COURT on FRI 08 JUN. Clark, who created the piece several years ago and has been developing it ever since, is, along with Matthew Bourne, one of the most innovative dancers and choreographers of his generation, set apart from his peers by his enduring incorporation of rock music into his oeuvre. In the past he’s collaborated with such left-field sonic visionaries as The Fall and for come, been and gone he’s utilising the sounds of David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Wire and more. You can read an interview with one of the company’s dancers KATE COYNE on P17, and to get you in the mood, there’s a playlist of the show’s soundtrack at http://tinyurl.com/6t76ary. Get along and it might just change your life. More boundary-breaking dance in TIME GENTLEMEN PLEASE [2] at EDEN COURT on SUN 03 JUN. Combining the music of English folksters the Demon Barber Roadshow with street dance and more, it promises to be pretty spectacular and, just like Michael Clark, suggests that the future looks all the brighter when you take the blinkers off. In the slightly more conventional world of musical theatre, I DREAMED A DREAM [3] (EDEN COURT, 11–16 JUN) tells the remarkable story of SUSAN BOYLE’s rise to fame, with the prospect of a possible appearance (though not guaranteed) from Subo herself. ELAINE C SMITH has been picking up rave reviews for her portrayal of Boyle and the whole piece looks like being far more engaging than many might have imagined. And for musical fans, that’s just one of the many treats on offer, with Opera Della Luna’s comic operetta (about the staging of The Pirates Of Penzance) THE PARSON’S PIRATES [4] (EDEN COURT, SUN 17 JUN), a musical about Henry VIII, HENRY-THE MUSICAL [5] (EDEN COURT FRI 22 & SAT 23 JUN) and SING-A-LONG-A-GREASE [6] (EDEN COURT, SUN 24 JUN), providing entertainment across the spectrum.

THEATRE PICK: Comedy

THE BOY WITH TAPE ON HIS FACE @ Eden Court One Touch, Mon 04 Jun, 8pm Sam Wills is a New Zealand comedian who, much like Flight Of The Conchords, has brought a vigorous new twist to the world of comedy. Whether as one half of the unfortunately named “Spitroast” or performing solo under his TBWTOHF moniker, he’s been attracting rave reviews, winning Best Breakthrough Act at the 2011 Chortle Awards. As the name suggests, his act is entirely mute thanks to said gaffer tape, but in a world where The Artist can wow the crowds, it’s clear that a rediscovery of the art of clowning is very fine indeed. This should convince you.

Chill Out... THE BREW CAVE by U.S. COOLER Eversince 1963, when Reggie Maudlin, Chancellor of the Exchequer back in the day, lifted the restrictions on home brewing, meaning you no longer needed a licence, man (and woman) has taken to the garden shed to try and perfect the art of the homemade beer. Whether to try and save money or to suit the beer to your own taste, ‘craft brewing’ has become big business these days. Forget the garden shed or a meagre corner of the garage for cool storage though - the perfect solution to all your home brew chilling needs has arrived. THE BREW CAVE is designed for beer enthusiasts, homebrewers, bars, clubs, craft breweries or anyone who is looking for a way to store a lot of beer cases and kegs - and we mean a lot ! The Brew Cave ‘walk-in kegerator’ can store 6+ kegs and over 30 cases of beer, all while keeping them in icy cold heaven. No more fighting for space in the fridge as the Brew Cave is the perfect place to keep all your precious home bottled brew* in optimum conditions. (*Or you could just get a huge Tesco home delivery order in. Just sayin’!...) Of course all this luxury comes at a hefty price - £5500 to be approximate - but just think how many friends you would gain! Who wouldn’t want to come to a party at your place? Now, we all know you can’t put a price on friendship... oh wait, maybe you can... 51/2 big ones sounds about right... (At time of going to press, not available to ship to outside the U.S. - but it’s only a matter of time; and we just couldn’t resist sharing...)

EATING OUT

Sam’s Indian Cuisine 77–79 Church Street, Inverness When Indian restaurants first populated Britain’s high streets in the sixties and seventies, they seemed almost impossibly exotic, a welcome addition of spice and colour to a country as grey as its cuisine. While establishments serving curries had been around in places like London since the turn of the twentieth century, they were born out of the days of the Raj, offering an Anglicised cuisine that was little more than ex-pat nursery food with the spice levels turned up a notch. The boom came from the fifties onwards with establishments initially set up to feed Asian immigrants, 90% of them manned by Bangladeshis cooking that region’s food. And half a century later it’s still that part of the sub continent that dominates the menus. It’s like going to a “European” restaurant and only being able to get Dutch food. A friend recalls first visiting an Indian

01463 713111

restaurant 25 years ago and being gobsmacked at the taste sensations on offer, a world away from supermarket Vesta Curry and his joy was shared by the majority of the British population, making the likes of the (entirely without heritage) Tikka Masala virtually the country’s national dish. Times change though and these days your average street has cuisines from all over the world competing for the customers’ money. Admittedly Inverness’ best dining experiences tend to be British, French or Italian, but palates are sophisticated enough to make the tried and trusted varieties of curries offered in every place seem somewhat tired. Credit then to SAM’S for at least making some attempt to offer something a bit different with a range of dishes that you might not have tried before. The menu’s still built around the usual suspects, but

at least there are a few opportunities to genuinely experience something you might not have had before. The eponymous Sam has thankfully fitted it out with a modern, beautifully understated interior, complete with comfy banquettes and niftily stylish cutlery on every table. A bunch of us visited at Christmas, when Hurricane Bawbag was doing its worst outside and we had what was generally acknowledged to be the finest Indian meal we’d had in town. This time, on a lunchtime visit, the food didn’t have quite the same pizzazz - not bad by any means (and indeed a lot better than almost any other place in town), just not reaching the same heights as previously. My starter of Tandoori Lamb Tikka Kebab was tasty but a little tough,

though the accompanying chilli and yoghurt sauces gave things a nice zing. More successful was

49

my companion’s Chicken Chat, which came inside a Puri type bread. “It was a change from the onion baji / pakora combination,” he said, “with all the nice base ingredients for a very tasty curry.” There’s also a veggie version available, showing that the more unusual dishes are often the most enjoyable. Mains came out with all the spectacle that still set Indian food apart from the rest - the thoughtfully large tables ensuring that even with myriad plates, dishes, heating tray et al, there was still plenty of space to dig in. A small detail, but one missed by far too many restaurateurs, and one which considerably enhances the eating experience. I’d chosen the Green Herb Sizzler and it certainly lived up to the allure of its name, delivered to the table in a cast iron dish, billowing smoke and sizzling away like nobody’s business. Pieces of chicken had been cooked with spices, ginger, peppers, coriander, chillis and mint, making for a pretty sensational combination. And as with most of the curries you get at Sam’s there’s a welcome restraint with the ghee ensuring a clean, fresh base rather than a quagmire of grease. My companion had originally decided on Lamb Patia, something he’d enjoyed previously, but changed his mind at the last minute and went for Chicken Rogan Josh. While tasty enough, it wasn’t anything too special, with any chicken flavour drowned by the necessarily spicy tomato sauce. Accompaniments shared between us of perfectly cooked rice, an unusual Kulcha Nan (with coriander and chilli) and a thick, creamy yoghurt were perfectly pleasant.

50

When we suggested that we might like to try puddings, the waiter seemed a little put out, intimating that the place closed at 2pm (a mere 17 minutes

earlier) and that they were waiting for us to leave. Not the finest example of customer service though to his credit he did apologise later. In the event we probablyshouldn’thavebotheredwith desserts anyway. The only options on offer come pre-prepared straight from the fridge, my Mango Kulfi (a kind of ice cream, moulded in this instance into something approximating a Dalek) and my companion’s Honey Pot (an unidentifiable cryogenic creation topped with almonds) being exactly what you’ll get in Indian restaurants from here to Penzance. Functional only. And that’s symptomatic of just what an opportunity Sam’s is missing. Not just on the dessert list, but throughout the menu, how about introducing even more dishes that you can’t get in your average Indian restaurant? There are places in London and Birmingham and, closer to home, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, that have seen the advantages, both monetarily and in terms of reputation, of introducing customers to the wonders of Indian regional cuisine and if anyone is capable of doing the same here, it’s Sam’s. It’d be a bold move, but one that might bring back a little of that exotic, irresistible magic that Indian restaurants first had all those years ago. Making The Most Of You:

SEEING IS BELIEVING When shopping for eyeglass frames, it’s tempting to get caught up in trends - rather than designs that complement your face shape. But you should understand that eyeglass styles come and go, as any other fashion trend, and it can be a mistake to choose a frame just because it is currently in style. The general rule with eyeglasses is to select a frame shape that flatters the shape of your face. For example, when it comes to size, be careful to choose small delicate frames if you have a small, delicate face, and the dramatic larger frames if your face has bold features or is larger. There are, of course, exceptions to this - so the only way to see what frames really suit your face is to get along to an opticians and try some on. You can narrow down your choices in advance by determining a few simple things, such as your face shape and skin colouring. Shape: While most faces are a combination of shapes and angles, there are seven basic face shapes: round, oval, oblong, base-down triangle, base-up triangle, diamond and square. Colour: Frames come in all manner of colours these days and it is important to think about your skin, eye and hair colours when choosing your frames. Eyewear should complement your own personal colouring. So before you go to the Optician have a good long look in the mirror and see if you can determine these 3 things : your face shape, whether you have a dominant feature that you would like to either emphasize or detract from, and lastly what colour palette your skin tone falls into - either a cool (blues, pinks and olive tones) or a warm ( peaches and cream or yellow tones). Good frame colours for “cool” complexions are black, silver, rose-brown, blue-gray, plum, magenta, pink, jade, blue and tortoise. “Warm” complexions will work well with camel, khaki, gold, copper, peach, orange, coral, off-white, fire-engine red, warm blue and blond tortoise. Choosing your glasses is a tricky business so don’t rush yourself – be prepared to spend some time on it, this is not a bottle of shampoo you’re buying. Don’t be overly swayed by the styles and colours of the season - remember you will be wearing them for many seasons to come. And if you want to really stand out from the crowd there are some truly funky designs out there, such as the award winning Kirk Originals (pic), whose glasses can be seen on celebrities such as Heston Blumenthal and Nicky Hambelton.

TATTOO YOU. From the sailors’ anchor to punk DIY tats to the 90’s explosion of celtic patterns, then tribal patterns and ethnic script, tattooing is always evolving. From the preserve of the tough working man on to the arms & backs of alternative types - hippies, punks, metal-heads and crusties - such was the undeniable beauty of what was being created that the tattoo eventually lost its taboo and finally Mr & Mrs John Everybody were getting tats all over - starting with discrete bland butterflies and the like on shoulders and ankles - and now we live in a world where 27 Beckham children all have 12 inch Sanskrit forms tattooed on their backs. Probably. Tattoo art has really always been ‘alternative’ and no matter how ‘acceptable’ tattoos may become, the real tattoo innovators and enthusiasts will always seek to push boundaries - both artistically and in the level of committment of body to ink - that are comfortably beyond the mainstream. Photo-realism - a growing trend among the best of the world’s tattoo artists - has been taken to absolutely stunning levels. And there is a move towards much more radicalised content too. Exponents such as NIKKO HURTADO, KAT VON D and DEN YAKOVLEV are true artists whose art is world renowned. Their work on coloured portraiture tattoos is nothing short of astounding - see examples below. Not only has what you have tattooed changed – but where on your body you have it done has also changed. Really these days when it come to where it goes, then anything goes, with one of the fastest growing trends being the skull tattoo - that’s a tat ON a head by the way, not of a head! NB: If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, think carefully about whether it’s right for you - you will live with it for a long time - do your homework and definitely stick to the professionals because no matter what that video on YouTube says it’s definitely not something to try at home.

WHAT MAY MIGHT MEAN... What does ‘may’ mean to you? Not the month or the flower or, if someone is reading this to you, the castle in Caithness... but the verb ‘may’. Does it mean ‘might’ or ‘will’? There’s an advert for a company who buy cars, can’t think what they’re called, which at the end of it says “transaction fee of £49.99 may apply”. Does that mean it will or it won’t? My confusion over the meaning of the word, and maybe it is only me who’s confused, arises from a time back in the mid-eighties when I decided to take some friends and family to the musical theatre - but crucially not all at the same time... I was living in Cambridge and during the summer of ‘85, or maybe it was ‘86, a friend from college and his girlfriend were coming to visit and I thought it’d be nice to go to see a west-end musical, so on a day trip to London I bought some tickets to “Chess”. When I got back to Cambridge my mum rang to say she and dad were coming down the week after my friends left, and they’d like to go see a west-end show. This was before the days of the internet, Switch cards and me having

ken kelman a credit card - buying a theatre ticket without actually going to the theatre in question was not as easy as it sounds - it was a potentially long drawn-out process involving phone calls, letters back-and-forth and things we had back then called cheques; sort of IOUs issued by a bank on the customer’s behalf. My parents were coming in less than a month there was no way that that ticket buying process could be completed in time. However, long-story-short, as luck would have it a friend from work was going in to London the next weekend and she offered to get me tickets to “Time” - Cliff Richard was in it so that’d be perfect. Even longer-story-short one of us got confused and tickets to “Time” were bought for the wrong, well, time... and date. I was feeling a bit despondent at having spent all that money and facing the prospect of spending even more on the right date when I noticed in the terms and conditions on the back that “tickets may not be exchanged or refunded”. Excellent, I thought, if they may not be exchanged then simple common sense says they may be exchanged. Feeling more

WHAT’S ON @ IG:LU (see P07)

positive, I called the number on the ticket. The lady who answered the phone seemed perfectly polite as I explained the situation – ending with a request to swap my tickets for some for the week after. “Tickets may not be exchanged” she said cheerily. “Indeed” I replied... “but they may... so which is it to be?”. “Tickets may not be exchanged” she repeated. “I know, you said... but surely it’s you who decides that. Are you saying you’ve decided not to exchange my tickets? If so I’d like to know why” I responded. To which she replied “tickets may not be exchanged”. I tried to reason logically with her, explaining that ‘may’ means ‘might’ and if you say something ‘may not’ then equally it ‘may’, but she was having none of it and simply repeated “tickets may not be exchanged” until I grew tired and hung-up – which is why I ended up seeing three West End musicals during a two week period back in the eighties. The tremendous cost of this is the further reason why I couldn’t afford the deposit on a small bed-sit in Cambridge, the price of which was £28,000 at that time and the value of which was £56,000 when I returned to Scotland 2 years later. Not that I’m bitter, but it does explain why I get so het up about the definition of the word ‘may’. The third musical was “Starlight Express”. KEN

promote Love’s Spring and getting to work on the next record.

What’s the Glasgow scene like. Is everyone you meet in a band? It’s hard to describe the Glasgow music scene because there’s so much going on. Suffice to say, if you like live music, Glasgow is great.

Have you ever been in an igloo before? Nope!

Have you been to the Highlands before? Looking forward to it? Yes and yes. We like the Highlands, they’re beautiful!

60

What are your plans for the year ahead? We’ll be doing shows to

Teach us something we can say in English. Or Glaswegian. As an Englishman I better stick to English - a good bit of dialect where I’m from is the word ‘nesh’, which means overly sensitive to the cold. So, if someone says to you ‘brrr it’s so cold!’, you could say ‘don’t be so nesh!’ www.twowingsband.com

ERIC CHENAUX experiments with ballads, songs, tunes, improvisations, guitars, voices, very small speakers, distortion and more. He’s been described as “Amnesiac-era Radiohead transposed to a jazz bar. His voice is high, jazz-tinged and husky, like a latterday Arthur Russell, or indeed Thom Yorke.” And his guitar playing is a thing of wonder. As one acolyte noted, “Ornette Coleman might call it harmolodic. Chenaux might call it an amazing background. I adore the way he teases out a melody, never beginning a phrase so much as joining one already in progress. The sound quivers and multiples such that I picture his strings fraying and sprouting into more strings, weeds, nests, marshes, frogs’ tongues, cancelled coins, nickel pipes, drainage systems, catacombs, coral reefs…”. http://cstrecords.com/eric-chenaux/

mill of happiness LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS Completing the bill, Little Mill look likely to be the next Inverness band to break through to a wider audience, and it’s something they relish. “I can’t understand bands who don’t want to be heard by as many people as possible,” says vocalist STEVE OBERN. “We’d love to get the opportunity to be successful enough to devote ourselves to making music full time.” Formed outside the Market Bar, after sharing a mutual love of Pavement, Tom Waits, The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr, the band have worked hard behind closed doors to produce an extensive catalogue of material, with a debut album the next step, but not one they’re going to rush out without complete confidence in the strength of the material. They pride themselves on each song being different in style and having its own personality and while some have noted the dramatic eloquence to proceedings of someone like Nick Cave, Obern is admirably open to

influences from right across the board. “Leonard Cohen is the greatest, most elegant songwriter,” he says, “but then I’m just as influenced by Sonic Youth and Luke Kelly”. While Obern’s resonant vocals provide the rich focus to the band’s material, their unique sound comes from the “three guitar orchestra” of Matt Campbell, Pete MacDonald and Willie Macaskill – a trio equally capable of lushly drenched layers, grunge riffs and delicate melodies. The confident bass of Ali Brown and drummer Craig Aitkenhead, complete a line-up that’s proving increasingly assured. Recently confirmed for the always excellent Belladrum Festival (catch them on the Hothouse Stage on the Saturday), if you want a preview of their awesome ability and versatility, book yourself a place for what is a really great line up - and see why we’ve so much faith in their future. While you’re at it, why not buy their EP, Capsized Sailors from http:// thelittlemillofhappiness.bigcartel.com
