On Valentine’s Day, a hugely significant step in the development of a prosperous future for Inverness and the Highlands took place in the ‘breaking of ground’ on the new Inverness Campus site at Beechwood. Perhaps the idea leaves you cold – but take a look at our pull-out report and you’ll see some images of what the finished buildings will look like. And consider that these excellent facilities will benefit the whole community – not only to use, but in attracting our ‘missing demographic’, Higher education students, who will provide much commercial and cultural opportunity for all of us. Plus the option of a doorstep uni for our kids. [ SEE CENTRE PAGES ]

We’re mad as March hares that there’s just TOO MUCH going on this month for us to be able to devote that free time we promised ourselves to set aside for putting up shelves, fixing the garden for spring and breaking the back of that 1,000 piece jigsaw. Guess it’ll have to wait a while ‘cos nothing’s going to stop us taking in such delights as: cover stars SPAGHETTI WESTERN ORCHESTRA and their unique take on the works of Leone’n’Morricone; top music from acts as diverse as IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS, GALLAGHER & LYLE, FATHERSON, RICHARD DURRANT, THRASHIST REGIME and even ALVIN STARDUST; arms in the air club sounds from DAVE CLARKE and SASH!; enlightening and entertaining evenings with SHIRLEY WILLIAMS and HENRY BLOFELD; cooking with CLAIRE MACDONALD; burlesque from a host of wondrous artists including AMBER TOPAZ (interviewed P15); magnificent comedy from RICH HALL and DOUG STANHOPE among others; MARATHONS and SKI FESTS in the great outdoors; the first buzz film of the year in BOOKED OUT and much, much more.

HYBRID TO HELL. Looking like the Batmobile’s topless younger sibling, the Chevrolet concept hybrid Miray valiantly marries zero-emissions electric driving (two 15kW motors) with the practical “actually, I have somewhere to be - let’s burn fuel” turbo-charged engine (1.5 litre, 4 cylinder) or even the combination of both. Whilst hereabouts we may get wet, we won’t get cold courtesy of ‘air scarves’ feeding warm air around the head and neck! The best features may be the scissor-doors (BIFF!), ambient lights under the carbon-fibre bodywork (BLAM!), the back-projected instruments with touchscreen (POW!), or the rear and front cameras - the latter with GPS nav info overlaying the real-time picture. What is art? It’s the question we ask each other every single day. Sort of. And there are plenty of opportunities this month to experience all sorts of artistic expression, from giving toys medical scans [2] (see Kids and Families page) to exploring aspects of suicide (see below). There’ll be some who don’t consider what MATISSE did as “art” after seeing DRAWING WITH SCISSORS at THE IONA GALLERY, KINGUSSIE (24 MAR–22 APR). And it’s true that there’s a childlike simplicity to cut-outs like The Snail [1] and Blue Nudes, but perhaps that’s the whole point. Whatever, the energy and luminosity of the colours still resonate half a century later and make them by far the most impressive pieces on display in the Highlands this month.

There’s contemporary stuff too though and we like the look of the exhibition by DAVID COOK AND HENRY FRASER at KILMORACK GALLERY (16 MAR–28 APR). Painters worth watching, there’s a liberating dynamism to what they do, with Cook’s exuberant landscapes particularly impressive.

RESEARCH & IMAGES resulting from a collaboration with Dr Grays Hospital, Elgin 19–24 Mar, What exactly is a toy? Whatever it is,that word ‘toy’, seems not to capture the full significance of the thing. GILL NEISH’s powerful new works, produced in collaboration with radiographer JOHN ADDISON, consider the image and idea of the toy in a serious and playful way. To arrive at these pictures, Neish has filled what she describes as a family of toys with various small objects and has then passed the family through the Computerised Tomography (CT) scanner. The images reveal the body contours of the toys and something of their mysterious innards. The haunting, floating shapes which result seem to gather then issue some stimulating thoughts on birth, infancy, motherhood, technology and contemporary medicality in highly concentrated form. ‘OUR WORLD OF MADNESS’ @ IG:LU Fri 16–Fri 30 March

Artist LUCY BARRIE explores troubling themes of SUICIDE and DEPRESSION in this mixed media exhibition. The exhibition includes a film which features clips of a lobotomy and various articles and items that relate to emotive aspects of the themes. Not therefore suitable for young children. A neutral ‘breathing space’ will be provided within IG:LU for those that might want to take a minute after or during viewing. Lucy’s interests began in the world of fantasy, which she used as an ‘escape’ from her perceived bleakness of real life. Having started an introduction to art course in 2008 she found herself pushed away from the world of fantasy which she found unsettling, even considering giving up. Eventually she found a way to work on more personal, real, issues - focusing on depression (that she had herself suffered from) and finding different ways to approach it: “I began exploring it and even to flaunt and play with it in ways I had thought about only in my most private thoughts and darkest times.” Having family working in mental health care brought Lucy into contact with many eye-opening experiences that have resulted in her resolve to try to make a difference to the way people with mental health difficulties are treated - both in care and by the general public. She has been vigorously researching the treatment of mental health and also suicide through history and this has informed much of her exhibition in Inverness this month. “ I myself am shocked two or three times during just one section of research. I hope to bring out that shock in my work for others to see and feel for themselves. I hope also to make a difference in the way the mentally ill are treated in today’s timeline because I know that there are many who can’t speak and are suffering at the hands of cruel treatment with no way out.” Show is open Mon–Fri 11–4 and Sats from 12–4

PLEASE NOTE: Whilst the show is not gratuitous and does not set out to be shocking, some people may find some aspects of the exhibition difficult or upsetting - please think before you visit.

ROMANCE

The new Gregory’s Girl? BRYAN O’NEIL holds a degree in Mathematics and has represented Great Britain at ice hockey. Not the usual credentials for a filmmaker, but as writer/director of BOOKED OUT [1], he’s proving that cinematic skill can suck people in from all sorts of unusual directions. It’s Glaswegian O’Neil’s debut and seems to confirm that British indie moviemaking doesn’t have to pander to the glib Hollywood clichés that David Cameron was demanding of the genre if it wants to touch the viewer’s heart. There’s something of a Gregory’s Girl for the 21st century in the warm humour of the storyline. Ailidh (MIRREN BURKE) has two loves in this world: spying on her neighbours and writing graphic novels. The arrival of Jacob (ROLLO WEEKS), inspires Ailidh and she soon begins conjuring up increasingly elaborate plans to bump into him. Upstairs, Mrs Nicholls (SYLVIA SYMS) provides Ailidh with a perfect opportunity and she soon has Jacob teaching Mrs Nicholls’ dead husband French. Unfortunately, Ailidh’s romantic endeavours are disrupted when she realises she isn’t the only girl in Jacob’s life, all this played out quite delightfully. While Sylvia Syms is an acting legend (with roles ranging from Fifties British comedy and drama to a more recent part as the Queen Mother in The Queen, it’s the young stars Rollo Weeks (The Little Vampire, Girl with a Pearl Earring) and newcomer Mirren Burke that are attracting the plaudits, particularly the latter’s portrayal of the ball of energy that is Ailidh. O’Neil is taking part in a Q&A tour for the film and comes to EDEN COURT on TUE 13 MAR. He’ll be joined by as yet unspecified cast members (although we’re sneakily hoping for the mighty Ms Syms) and after the screening you’ll be able to ask him exactly how he’s brought his skills with sums and facility with a puck to the world of filmmaking. eden-court.co.uk With Harry Potter having epically concluded last year and Twilight putting away the sparkle body paint in November, the world needs another massive young adult franchise. Thank goodness, then, for THE HUNGER GAMES [2]. Available, unusually, at EDEN COURT FROM RELEASE* (yay!) - this is the hotly (and I mean hotly - ask your local tweenager) anticipated adaptation of the first of the popular book trilogy. *Available at VUE also - but it’s nice to see both cinemas offering this from day one. Taking cues from Orwell and real-world reality TV addiction, THG takes place in a world where adolescents are forced to battle to the death on live television, for the entertainment of the wealthy. If The Hunger Games achieves the success it deserves, then we should be due another two installments. With the stellar cast including Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright, Bridge To Terebithia), Elizabeth Banks (Man On A Ledge, Role Model), DONALD SUTHERLAND and many others, this appears a slightly more cerebral adolescent work.

Weird ‹(°≠°)› Science They’re calling it the Brian Cox Effect. The pop-star-turned-physicist isn’t just ridiculously telegenic, but also manages to communicate big scientific ideas in a straightforward, albeit fleetingly understandable, manner. As indeed does James May, the two of them recalling golden days of TV science from the mighty James Burke. And the result is an upsurge of interest in the subject with a far from coincidental rise in the number of people studying the sciences at school and college. It’s fitting then that MORAY COLLEGE UHI, ELGIN is hosting a FAMILY SCIENCE DAY on SAT 24 MAR, 10am-5pm, the culmination of a week-long school Science Festival. The theme of the family day is, topically, the Science Of The Olympics, exploring subjects as diverse as how bones work, judo expertise and boat design. You’ll also have the chance to design a crash helmet, try to run faster than Usain Bolt, measure your lung capacity and, rather disturbingly, “see the Screaming Jelly Baby”, though what that has to do with science is a mystery. More details: 01343 576319 or samantha.bright@moray.uhi.ac.uk To coincide with the festival there’s also an interesting sounding exhibition of images from GILLIAN NEISH. Produced in collaboration with radiographer John Addison, Neish has filled what she describes as “a family of toys” with various small objects and has then passed the family through the Computerised Tomography (CT) scanners at Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin. The images reveal the body contours of the toys and something of their mysterious innards. The haunting, floating shapes which result are well worth seeing. who’s it gonna be? So, as predicted last time out, ROCKNESS announced on 26 Jan. We were on the money about BIFFY CLYRO, JUSTICE and NOAH & THE WHALE, sadly no Daft Punk or Vaccines (yet?), etc. Hidden gems in their include AZEALIA BANKS and METRONOMY - who we took a trip to the NME Awards show at Glasgow O2 Academy to check out. Both will tear up Rockness - the former with sheer attitude and 100pmh spitting - hope for a repeat of the ‘turning 212 into Firestarter’ trick; - the latter will just kill you with their absolute awesome! MUMFORD & SONS will headline (if they can leave the farm long enough) alongside DEADMAU5 and the aforementioned BIFFY. ED SHEERAN occupies one sub-headline slot - billed alongside the mighty JUSTICE that looks a tad strange leaving one sub-headliner free... SO... WHO’S IT GONNA BE?... WHO ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ROCK THE NESS THIS YEAR OR NXT YEAR? Lets have a bit of fun - you let us know, and we’ll compile the results and send them to the organisers. Here’s how to do it...

FEEDER >>> What’s GRANT NICHOLAS Been Listening To?: 1. The Police - Message in a Bottle I have been a fan of The Police for many years now and they were a big influence on Feeder. This song is a classic and has a great guitar riff . 2. Grandaddy - Under the Western Freeway I really like this band and it’s a shame that they have now split up. They have a great way with quirky melodies. 3. Everclear - Heroin Girl We spend a lot of time touring with this band and I always liked listening to this song live. It’s taken from their album Sparkle and Fade. 4.The Eels - Novocaine for the Soul I discovered this band when we were finishing our first album Polythene and have bought every album since. This is one of their more commercial moments. 5. Tom Petty - Last Dance with Mary Jane I am a massive Tom Petty fan and have been listening to Full Moon Fever a lot recently. I also love this classic by him. I am really looking forward to playing with him this year at the Isle of Wight Festival. 6. PJ Harvey - This is Love I have always wanted to cover this song and may get around to it someday. She is an amazing artist and great live. This was taken from her album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.

Spaghetti Whoops We’ve no particular yearning to be caught up in a gun battle, but if we were, our shootout of choice wouldn’t be the kind of wham-bam/kerpow stuff that’s the fodder of video games and the all-pervasive gangsta culture. No siree, we’d go for the languorously melancholy gunfights to be found in westerns, specifically that glorious “spaghetti” subgenre (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, For A Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in The West, etc) made by Sergio Leone and soundtracked distinctively by Ennio Morricone. No grubby death in an alley in the hood for us, but a quiet splutter and fade to black, prostrate under the baking sun as vultures circle overhead and panpipes play an elegiac refrain. And that’s the atmosphere set to be created in magnificent fashion when this month’s ICA cover stars the SPAGHETTI WESTERN ORCHESTRA [1] come to EDEN COURT on SAT 17 MAR. The Australian quintet, who started life as The Ennio Morricone Experience, use the films as starting points for a new narrative that draws on stock characters (namely The Bankteller, The Storyteller, The Gold Schmeller, The Lieteller and The Youngfeller) who usually get killed off in the first ten minutes being brought back to life to wreak revenge. All this acted out as they play a dizzying array of instruments ranging from the conventional to outlandishly utilised household items like rubber gloves, coat hangers, cornflake boxes and more. Not quite what we recall from listening to the original movie soundtracks, but the SWO somehow manage to integrate such noises into a beautifully constructed joy of a... well a what? Is it a concert? A play? A comedy show? Or even a tribute to the days of the old Wild West? A bit of all that and something entirely original too. Perhaps most importantly, they’re not afraid to play with perceptions of what they’re doing, gleefully intoning “jaaazzz!” in a Fast Show style when things teeter towards the indulgently improvisational. Founder member Graeme Leak’s earlier projects have included a piece for 500 bellringers and an intriguingly named “music wall” in the Australian Outback, but this seems to be the most successful yet, already having wowed audiences across the country. Maybe there’s a little bit of Clint in all of us.

Enchanted Evenings Shirley Williams has been on Question Time more than any other guest, a testament not only to her enduring presence in the political arena, but also the fact that she tends to be far more articulate and eloquent than most of her peers. Literally peers in fact, since she was elevated to Baroness Williams of Crosby in 1993. Whether you agree or not with her politics, she remains one of the last of the old-school in a world where lazy soundbytes and pandering to an audience’s already-held prejudices tend to clog most editions of QT. It’ll be interesting then to see SHIRLEY WILLIAMS [1] at EDEN COURT on WED 04 APR, when she’ll be talking all about her life and career. And it’s quite a career, taking in early years as a journalist (and even sometime actress!), move to politics as a Labour MP, co-founding of the SDP and ensuing position as a leading light in the Liberal Democrats. Along the way she’s been responsible for some seismic shifts, both at home (abolishing the Grammar School system and introducing comprehensives) and abroad (helping draft constitutions for Ukraine, Russia and South Africa; serving as President of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, as Commissioner of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and as United Nations Special Representative to the Former Yugoslavia). While she may never have made PM (except in a comic book called “Invasion!” where she ended up getting killed by aliens), it’s been quite a contribution, perhaps matched only by Tony Benn. The Q&A session should be absorbing. Hers is just one of several “Evenings With...” taking place at Eden Court in forthcoming weeks, all of which look like being just as fascinating. AN EVENING OF GASTRONOMY WITH CLAIRE MACDONALD [2] on WED 28 MAR will see the celebrated cook demonstrate some of her favourite recipes as well as a raffle with some pretty impressive prizes, while on THU 29 MAR internationally acclaimed mountaineer, writer and broadcaster STEPHEN VENABLES [3] tells the story of legendary climber Eric Shipton who took part in five expeditions to Everest, famously missing out on Sir Edmund Hillary’s historical ascent of the mountain after being sacked from the expedition. And if it’s fine yarns you’re after you can’t go wrong with one of the greatest voices of cricket HENRY BLOFELD [4], who’ll be recounting events from his extraordinary life at EC on SUN 01 APR. We’re promised tales of everyone from Ian Fleming to Larry Olivier as well as stuff from the Test Match Special commentary box, great stories of John Arlott, Brian Johnston and the others including the great Jim Swanton who, tremendously, was such a snob he refused to travel in the same car as his chauffeur. The word “unmissable” was made for such a night.

RACING

The sport formerly known as Snickers… If you’ve kept to your New Year health and fitness resolutions, but are wondering what to do with your newly honed constitution, there are plenty of opportunities this month to get the endorphins surging through your body with a bit of endurance running. Most notable is the GLOBAL ENERGY INVERNESS HALF MARATHON, 5K TEAM ATTACK & 5K FUN RUN [1], taking place on SUN 11 MAR. Starting right in the centre of town and taking advantage of a riverside route, it’s hardly surprising that it’s consistently praised by runners as one of the best events of its kind in Britain. Thanks to the new sponsor, it’s also one of the most lucrative (with £1000 each to the male and female winners) attracting competitors from all over the land. Scottish international Andrew Douglas (Inverclyde AC) has already confirmed he’ll be back to defend the men’s title while top UK masters runner Melissa Whyte (Inverness Harriers) says she’ll try to complete a hat-trick of wins in the women’s contest. Commonwealth Games marathon man Martin Williams (Tipton Harriers) hasn’t ruled out heading north to compete as part of his preparations for the London marathon and Olympic trial and a field of 1,800 runners is expected with a further 1,000 in the 5Km Fun Run* and Team Attack. The latter is a new event open to business teams, each made up of four people. The team with the lowest cumulative time will win. (*ltd Fun Run entries available on day) For more information see www.invernesshalfmarathon.co.uk There are other “traditional” running events this month (including the NEWTONMORE 10 MILE ROAD RACE AND 2 MILE FUN RUN/WALK on SAT 24 MAR and the ELGIN 10K [2] on SUN 25 MAR), but one event that’s particularly intrigued us is the SLOW MARATHON @ HUNTLY on SAT 17 MAR. Ethiopian artist MIHRET KEBEDE would like to have walked from Addis Ababa to Huntly to start her Deveron Arts residency, was stymied by not only the distance (5865 miles), but also border controls and visa restrictions. In order to symbolically make such a journey Deveron Arts wants to bring 225 people together to walk a marathon of 26 miles. A parallel event will take place in Addis Ababa on 18 Mar to bring Mihret back to her home. And in that one, there’ll be participation from multi-world-record winner HAILE GEBRSELASSIE [3], a hero and enduring inspiration to anyone with the slightest interest in athletics. GREAT GLEN PADDLE FEST 2012 @ Fort Augustus, Fri 23 Mar In some ways it’s surprising that it has taken so long for the creation of a watery equivalent of the Great Glen Way, after all the wet stuff has been there for hundreds and thousands of years. Better late than never though and Fri 23 Mar sees the official opening of the Great Glen Canoe Trail. To celebrate the opening and the fantastic paddling destination of the Great Glen and the Caledonian Canal, British Waterways Scotland have teamed up with the Scottish Canoe Association to bring us the first Great Glen Paddle Festival. Based in Fort Augustus, the heart of the Great Glen, this event will look to promote both canoe and sea kayak disciplines by offering an extensive range of skill workshops for all levels of ability/experience with guidance from some of the country’s top coaches. You can attend either half day, full day or even the full weekend of workshops. On top of this there will be an evening of paddling presentations given by a number of guest coaches on Friday, a paddling exhibition area throughout Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday with many exhibitor and trade stands to visit. Plus, of course, the inevitable Highland Ceilidh on the Saturday evening. Hire boats and kit can be available onsite for those who require them, however you’re urged to book this at the same time as purchasing your workshop and ceilidh tickets. greatglencanoetrail.info

This Is Your Lives These days we think of John Gielgud - if at all - as the very epitome of crusty old luvviedom, his later years spent recounting old anecdotes about Darling Larry while giving mere glimpses of forgotten talent when popping up in things like (the original) Arthur. That’s a shame, because not only was he the finest Shakespearean actor of his generation, providing a link between Victorian and “modern” ways to play the Bard’s characters, but also an invaluable mentor to many writers and performers. The recent one-man show at Eden Court by Mark Burgess, Two Halves of Guinness, found the character of Sir Alec relating how, when just starting out as an actor he’d gone to Gielgud for advice and ended up getting both financial help and the opening of all the right doors for embarking on the career that followed. Gielgud’s influence on twentieth century creative culture is examined again next month in THE MAN WHO LIVED TWICE at EDEN COURT on SUN 04 APR. And again it’s glimpsed through the prism of tiny moments. Garry Robson’s play, directed by Alison Peebles, relates the meeting in New York in 1936 between the then heartthrob Gielgud [1], at the peak of his acting powers, and the playwright Edward Sheldon [2]. Gielgud wrote of the meeting, “I had an extraordinary time this afternoon. Edward Sheldon who wrote ‘Romance’ and other successful plays has been stricken with some appalling petrifying paralysis for fourteen years and is blind too. All the well known stage people go to see him, talk to him and act scenes from their plays and ask his advice… he talks with consummate ease and charm, as if he had known you all his life… “ The Man Who Lived Twice is a dramatised account of what took place between these two men - the ‘crippled muse’ and the ‘fastidious actor’- being, according to its writer “a play about love, longing and the unreliability of macaws.” Sounds intriguing. From The man Who Lived Twice to a woman who does much more than that, courtesy of the bold-sounding ANA [3] at EDEN COURT on SUN 19 & MON 20 MAR. Directed by internationally renowned Serge Denoncourt, ANA is a spectacular co-production between the always excellent Scottish company Stellar Quines and Montreal based Imago Théâtre. This daring bilingual creation promises to take us on a journey of creativity and madness, mixing Scots-English with Canadian-French in a fabulous story of, from what we can gather, split personalities, self-invention and reclaiming countless existences. Bewildering of course, but in the best of ways.

COMEDY-DRAMA PICK: AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE WICKER MAN @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 06-Sat 10 Mar When Hollywood decided to remake the 1973 movie of “The Wicker Man”, the result was an anodyne mess far removed from the original version of Anthony Shaffer’s unsettling story about a London detective meeting his doom in a small Scottish village set against a backdrop of paganism and Britt Eckland’s saucy dancing. It’s a relief then to find that this isn’t another attempt to simply revisit the original, being instead, in the words of the producers “a love letter to a unique and timeless cult masterpiece, except that someone forgot to pay the postage”. Being the latest production from National Theatre of Scotland, the most consistently inventive company around and directed by the peerless VICKY FEATHERSTONE, you can guarantee this is going to be pretty good and it has a deliciously metatextual rewriting of the original. The set up sees a group of am-dram actors on a remote Scottish island putting on a performance of The Wicker Man until one of their number is killed and they call in the services of a TV cop from the mainland to investigate… Can you see where they’re going with this? It’s co-written and starring GREG HEMPHILL (Chewin’ The Fat / Still Game) so expect some assured comedy skills on the way to the incendiary finale. eden-court.co.uk

myPod ? NU-OVO by Tisettanta The Nu-ovo was designed by Italian architect PAUL MALDOTTI to be the first “storage unit for man. A space within a space which can provide you with a perfect haven away from the stresses of life. Originally designed for restaurants, to provide intimate dining pods and offices for private meetings it is now becoming popular with homeowners who want to create a special space for themselves. It is a mobile unit which can be used indoors or outdoors and can be equipped with furniture and fittings as desired - really the possibilities are endless for how you choose to kit one out. You can create your own private library / reading space by adding shelving and a cosy chair, or add a circular sofa with centre table for a peaceful work space, a double bed which could be a guest room or it could even be equipped as a kitchen or personal gym. The exterior shell is made from waxed marine plywood so it is light and it even comes on wheels so can easily be moved to suit your changing needs. What would you do with your own womb- like personal retreat?

Each SPC gives their properties unrivalled exposure through their own website while also marketing at a local level. Spcscotland.co.uk gives additional national presence. Spcscotland.co.uk provides a great starting point as it contains every home from all the participating SPCs. Sarah Woodcock Manager of HSPC, said: “The new website is a major development that will be enormously helpful to buyers and sellers alike. We know from

property property research that it’s important to maximise your property’s exposure at a local level and then across the rest of the country as the vast majority of buyers will come from either of these groups. By selling through a solicitor estate agent, your house will be featured not only through your local property centre, but now on the national website as well. House hunters will find the site very easy to use, giving them access to detailed information and photographs for over 14,000 properties for sale

across Scotland. During 2011, every working day 86 people sold their house with a solicitor estate agent, with a combined value across the year in excess of £4billion. Selling your home with a solicitor is the Scottish way and in these tough times, it is a way that continues to work for tens of thousands of homeowners.” For more information visit: www.spcscotland.co.uk

EATING OUT The Old Bridge Inn

Dalfaber Road, Aviemore 01479 811137 First off, the location of the Old Bridge Inn is pretty special anyway but on this bright frosty day it was absolutely beautiful, so we were off to a great start. The bar area has a log fire, blasting out much needed heat but all the locals know to get there early and nab these seats. However, the dining area is full of character and we had our choice of seats in there - even though it did steadily fill up as the lunchtime wore on. There is a great atmosphere about the place, the sort of thing that is hard to put your finger on and impossible to mimic, but it felt like a much loved, much used, old family favourite which has something about it that appeals to all the generations. But man can not live by ‘atmosphere’ alone, so let’s get to the food. My starter was Baked Goat’s Cheese & Caramelised Onion Tart with Pesto and

it was great. A layer of flaky pastry with a generous slice of creamy goats cheese on top. As a vegetarian you get given goats cheese everywhere you go and you pretty soon become a connoisseur, so it was great to taste this quality creamy version. The caramelised onions were delicious and the accompanying salad leaves were dressed in a chunky pesto sauce. I love a pesto with a bit of bite to it and this one had uncrushed pine nuts which also gave a fuller flavour. It would have been hard to improve this dish and I would happily have ordered it again for my main meal. My partner had the Roast Tomato & Fennel Soup served with chunky, fresh, brown bread. Full marks to them for an adventurous choice but I would say the flavouring was not quite right and it missed the mark a little.

My Main Meal was Leek and Mull Cheddar Pancakes with Spinach and Root Vegetables. Again quite an unusual dish and very well executed. The 2 pancakes were stuffed with leek and spinach, then surrounded by a finely diced assortment of root vegetables. It was a very interesting dish and delicious. It actually benefitted from not being smothered in cheese, or a creamy sauce, which is how this sort of meal would often be served. The flavours of the vegetables really came through and the pancakes were a perfect blend of soft inside and crispy on the outside. As it was a Sunday lunchtime we thought it only polite to try out the Sunday Roast and the very helpful server offered to do a discounted veggie version i.e: everything but the meat. It was great - perfectly crisp roast potatoes with fluffy centres,

a creamy vegetable mash with pleasing chunks of carrot, the red cabbage was satisfyingly pitched between sweet and tart and the Yorkshire puddings were huge and, most essentially, not soggy. Maybe with a bit of notice they could replace the meat with something but really it made for a delicious and satisfying meal as it was. I wish more places would offer this option. So far, with the exception of the soup, everything had been splendid but the dessert menu just made things very difficult. Two standard choices, Sticky Toffee Pudding or Chocolate Fondant, yes we have had these hundreds of times before but with the standard of food being so excellent we thought we just had to see what they did with these two classics. However the other two desserts on offer were so unusual and certainly not choices I have come across anywhere else - Coconut Jelly with Mango Soup and Pineapple and secondly Crema Catalana with Poached Rhubarb. I couldn`t really let those go by either could I? So yes, dear reader, with slightly red faces we ordered four desserts. The two classics were indeed superb. The chocolate fondant oozed soft chocolate when you broke through the outer shell and the sticky toffee pudding was without doubt a superior version. Not overly sweet, which really worked and it was perfectly moist too. Both served with a quality vanilla ice cream. So far so very good. Onto the unusual choices. The Coconut jelly was quite subtly flavoured which worked well with the Mango Soup which had chunks of mango and pineapple which complimented the jelly perfectly.

A really light, healthy dessert, full of flavour. Last but not least was the Crema Catalana. This is basically the Spanish version of the French dessert Creme Brulee. There is some dispute about which came first and there is a little difference in the recipe - the Spanish version is lighter and can come flavoured with citrus peel or cinnamon, but really who cares? Well I guess the French and Spanish do. Anyway this Crema Catalana was delicately flavoured and beautifully creamy. The dish of poached rhubarb provided the zing this dish needed. Not overdoing the sugar was quite brave but when you combined the rhubarb with the sugar topped crema you had a match made in heaven. So glad I overcame my embarrassment and tried all of these. So I am going to heartily recommend The Old Bridge Inn to you. They have a great thing going here. The service was brilliant, really friendly and helpful, it is a lovely old building and the interior is old school with a hint of modern. The menu was interesting, which is a big deal when you eat out in as many places as I do. But top billing goes to the food which was damn fine. HEALTH & ‘APP’INESS...

There has been a trend towards Do It Yourself health care in the past 12 months, spurred on by the invention of apps and gadgets which increasingly allow consumers to discreetly track and manage their health at home. New apps and devices are actively targeting consumers keen on preventing, examining, improving, monitoring and managing their health. In fact, Apple’s App Store currently offers over 9,000 mobile health apps – and by mid-2012, this number is expected to exceed 13,000 ! Here are our 5 top DIY health apps/devices : Released in November 2011, Up by Jawbone, a wristband personal tracking device that tracks a user’s moving, eating and sleeping patterns. The device syncs with an iPhone app, and users can set the device to vibrate when they have been inactive for a period, compete against friends and even earn real life rewards for completing activity challenges. Pain Free Back, an interactive back pain relief product, lets users enter specific data as they’re taken on a guided discovery about their back pain. Exercise solutions are offered afterwards. iHealth’s Blood Pressure Dock plugs into an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and takes the user’s blood pressure. Data can be sent directly to a doctor or published (confidentially) on the Web. Skin Scan is an app which allows users to scan and monitor moles over time, with the aim of preventing malignant skin cancers. The app tells users if a visit to their doctor or dermatologist is advisable. There are also many apps designed to help you give up smoking. One of the most popular is Lungs Check which allows you to input all your own personal data - how many cigarettes you smoke, how long you have smoked for, age etc... and it will calculate the state of your lungs – even show you a picture – and if that doesn’t motivate you, nothing will !

Making The Most Of You:

TOP TEN FASHION TIPS FOR SPRING 2012... 1: Coming back in a whole new way are ESPADRILLES but this time think PLAIDS, STRIPES, and NAUTICAL NAVY.

FILM

2: You will see all sorts of whimsical PATTERNS in the high street this spring/ summer. Fruits, birds, feathers, sweets - BOLD PRINTS on everything from blouses to dresses right through the summer. 3: The art of CROCHET is back with a bang ( albeit a very ladylike one). Crochet VESTS are big this spring.

KIDS

4: TINY WEENY BAGS. Belt bags have come on leaps and bounds - forget those awful ‘bum bags’ we all used to think were so handy. New small SQUARE BELT BAGS are the cutest new accessory. 5: If you want to make a colourful statement this spring then ORANGE is your colour, with many of the high street stores featuring in the boldest colour of them all. FELLAS can get in on the act with this one too.

MUSIC

6: Luckily for those of us who cannot master the art of the high heel, KITTEN HEELS are big news this spring. They are feminine, and classic, as well as comfortable. 7: Talking of comfort, flowing TUNICS and PYJAMA STYLE trousers in feminine CREAMY neutral colours are floating back into our lives.

SPECIALS SPORT THEATRE BACK

8: 70’s glam is back in the form of ONE PIECE JUMPSUITS. These did make a brief reappearance last year but they’re not done with us yet - think STUDIO 54 for Spring. 9: STRIPES, one could say stripes are never in or out of fashion so they are always a good buy. The NAUTICAL and GEEK CHIC looks both heavily feature stripes this season. 10: Last but not least the HIGH-WAISTED FLARE PANTS are back - not something I thought I’d say again in my lifetime. Team them with a HIGH HEEL to give you the glamorous Katharine Hepburn look and a SKINNY FLASHY BELT to bring the look bang up to date. 5

CHINA CHAGRIN

I broke a couple of cereal bowls at the weekend, not for enjoyment like at a Greek wedding or a county fair which I would have been OK with, it might even have won me a coconut. But no, these bowls I broke by accident which I was not OK with. It might not have affected me so bad if there had been one mass crockery related catastrophe resulting in both breakages happening at once, but there wasn’t the vessels were dropped and damaged beyond repair in two separate incidents several hours apart. Couple this with putting my pizza in the oven while still on it’s cardboard backing plate and there can only be one conclusion - Age Related Cognitive Decline. Sure I could probably explain these things away as bad luck with the china and the obvious distraction of having to remove potentially lethal slices of a particularly plasticy cheese from the pizza before it became superheated in the oven and stuck, scalding hot to the roof of my mouth - like last time, meaning I totally and reasonably forgot about the cardboard plate. But the insight afforded to me by my mild hypochondria means I

ken kelman awards was won by 42 year old Astrophysicist, Szabolcs Márka, an Associate Professor with the Department of Physics at Columbia University. Let me pause to allow the significance of that information to sink in... the salient points being 42 year old Szabolcs Márka, and, Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. Further examination of the criteria for these awards reveals: Candidates must be 42 years old or younger and have made significant contributions to blah de blah be blah. The reassurance gained for this knowledge is immeasurable, it means that in the world of the scientist I’m not old, not even middle aged, in fact I’m only just a shade over being young.

know better - all these things are happening because I’m getting old... in fact even if I did use my excuse about removing the cheese form the pizza topping, that action alone makes me sound more than a bit doddery. Then I remembered (which is in its self a good sign) an article I’d come across on the internet about the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists, a bit of an obscure reference I grant you but bear with me. Last year one of these

WIN WHISKY TICKETS (see P2 & 28)

There is of course the possibility of another, more disturbing, truth in all of this. If in the scientific community 42 is considered young, then allowing for middle-age, old-age and finally dotage, it suggests that the life-span of the average scientist must extend to around 120 years, perhaps even longer. This in turn means that they must have found the true secret to longer life... not for Mr and Mrs Professor smearing age-regenerative gunk all over themselves... no... they know something they’re not letting on about - I’ll bet there‘s probably some sort of pill, but they’ve slipped up in allowing 42 year olds to enter young scientist competitions, and soon the truth will out! Though it better come quick - I‘ve only two bowls left in the set. KEN
