The Fly Nip Visit Inverness Airport’s whisky shop within the departure lounge. ‘The Fly Nip’ stocks a wide range of Malt Whiskies from Speyside to the Islands as well as a unique range of Scottish Vodkas and Gins. Daska Matheson has recently joined the Fly Nip team to advise customers on the different whiskies available. Daska says ‘the reaction of customers has been very supportive. We have a range of whiskies to suit every pocket whether it be around £11.95 or from our connoisseurs collection with prices up to £410 a bottle.’ Plan to spend a bit more time in the departure lounge to buy your fly nip.

Jail at the Airport Jail at the Airport has been operating since March 2010. The airport shop is a micro version of the shops in Dornoch and sells a selection of our best-selling quality items such as Harris Tweed, Johnston’s of Elgin accessories, Ness, Harley of Scotland, Olney Hats, House of Cheviot and their own label of “Highland Estate Tweeds”. You will also find a range of jewellery including a range in silver and gold from Sheila Fleet. Last but not least, soft toys, a range of highland ceramics, accessories, handbags and toiletries completes the current lineup. It’s worth a trip to the airport, even if you’re not flying.

Ten years, eh? Well, kind of ‘so what?’ - Strathpeffer Pavilion has been going 130 years this year - now that’s staying power! But thanks for staying with us, people you make it all worthwhile. It’s nice to know we’ve put a few bums on seats here & there along the way. My favourite cover to date was a few years back now, when Daniel O’Donnell was playing pre-surgery Eden Court. Our headline of ‘O’D on Craic’ came in my sleep and seemed pretty darned clever unusually for me, it still does... We won’t make a big old hoo-haa out of the thing, but just thought we should make mention. If you want to wish us Happy Birthday, why not toot your horn if you’re passing the top end of Church St... Neil MacPherson is a wonderfully inventive painter with a superb eye for colour. His paintings involve a beautiful narrative that draws in the viewer, curious to discover more about this surreal, poetic world he creates, a world no doubt inspired by his own geographical location. In the early eighties he settled in Caithness, drawn by the remote wilderness, the history and the light - and he admits that living and working there has had a fundamentally positive effect on his work, both in providing a rich source of inspiration and the space free of distraction to find his own voice. This major one-man show gives you a chance to see why he’s considered by many to be one of the most important painters working in Scotland today.

NICHOLA MARTIN, October Nichola is a talented young award-winning Scottish artist, based in Fife. She was the winner of the John Kinross Scholarship and the Scottish Further Education Unit Prize in 2007. Nichola produces beautifully detailed graphite and charcoal drawings. Hugely evocative, she portrays emotive subject matter - a pile of open, half read books; simple yet complex figurative works; a pair of dice being thrown waiting to reveal their numbers - which adds to the tremendous sense of drama about her work. Successfully graduating in 2007 from Duncan of Jordanstone College in Dundee with an Honours Degree in Fine Art (as well as a clutch of glowing press articles), Nichola has been producing her drawings ever since, and has exhibited widely throughout the UK and with well-received solo shows.

Presumably not billed as the plucky adventures of a racist Indiana Jones for kids , though such criticisms can certainly be aimed at the original Hergé cartoons for all their success in establishing the lead as one of the world s few famous Belgians. In fact with a plot all about sunken ships and hunting for treasure, this probably nods most obviously to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise (now past its sell-by date), though a script originally drafted by Doctor Who saviour Steven Moffat (and completed by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish)guarantees surprises and originality by the bucketload. Most importantly of all it s a collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, using stop-motion animation. It s Spielberg s first foray into animation and he apparently enjoyed the virtual camera so much that he even overcame some of his technophobia. Daniel Craig, Toby Jones and Jamie Bell are among a star-studded cast. Expect the first how to get the Tintin look feature to crop up in a magazine in about ten minutes time.

Is there anything more anthropomorphically cute than a sweet little koala bear? Probably not, even if the reality involves sharp claws and being blissed out on eucalyptus. So there should be lots of “aahs” in this People’s Theatre presentation written especially for parents to enjoy with their children, billed as “a charming, tale about the magic of family and, of course, the importance of a nice warm hug!” Wild characters, stories aplenty, singalong songs, games and, of course, hugging.

THEATRE

Visible Fictions productions are always worth checking out and for sixteen years they’ve been pretty much setting the benchmark for theatre that can appeal to adults and young people alike, managing to be both intelligent and accessible. The Hunted is a piece for those aged eleven and upwards, inspired by Little Red Riding Hood. “A lone girl dares to be something nobody has been — in a place nobody dares to go. The path is long, there will be trouble ahead and there are things out to get her... Take a deep breath, step into the unknown, and be prepared for your world to turn upside down.”

To be honest we’re just beginning to get an intsy-tinsy bit tired of all this obsession with being an American High School student and all that is perceived to entail. Singing and dancing mainly. After all, who needs to do any learning when there are feet to be stomped, choirs to be joined and all life’s travails just gagging to be communicated in song? So, we’re done with all that. Or will be after we’ve paid it one last visit in the form of a veritable smorgasbord of hits from High School Musical 1, 2, & 3, Hannah Montana, Camp Rock and Glee. “The Ultimate Party” and an “interactive adventure” apparently, and one that’s wowing crowds all over the place, so we’ll give it one last whoop.

THE CHINA PROJECT Emma Smith & The Silk String Quartet: Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 03 Nov KIDS

The music of the East has surged in popularity recently with a host of well regarded Oriental shows at this year’s Edinburgh festival and the likes of DAMON ALBARN incorporating the unique tonal qualities and unusual instruments, both with Gorillaz and the ambitious Monkey: Journey To The West operatic drama. THE SILK STRING QUARTET have actually collaborated with Albarn as well as with Chinese pianist LANG LANG, performing at venues as diverse as WOMAD and The Royal Opera House and establishing themselves as the go-to Chinese music ensemble for both classical and contemporary works. For the China Project they’re joined by double bassist EMMA SMITH who’s a regular member of Eliza Carty’s band and, bringing things full circle, has also worked with Albarn in Gorillaz. Bringing together traditional music from both China and Scotland the project features a new commission by Scots composer JIM SUTHERLAND and it’ll be interesting to see how the cultures combine. We might even get to see and hear traditional Chinese instruments like the pipa, erhu, yangqin and guzheng which, until now have remained just marvellous reasons for running round pumping your fist during a game of Scrabble. Intriguing.

Highland Junglists present - TURBULENCE: Cake, Inverness, Fri 14 Oct

SKERRYVORE: Ironworks, Sat 15 Oct

FILM

The hard working Highland Junglists kick off the autumn with the first in a series of nights planned for the months ahead. And they’re launching with special guest DJ RENEGADE whose “heavyweight jump up D’n’B” has attracted much attention, not least from Radio 1 and 1Extra. 10pm-3am, £5

FOLK

KIDS

Skerryvore formed in 2005 on the Isle of Tiree and fuse traditional music and songs with the urban sounds of rock and funk. They’ve played Chicago, Beijing, Shanghai, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan, Prague, Dubai, as well as performances at premier festivals such as T in the Park and Celtic Connections. And the singer’s called Dalglish, which is always a good thing.

After their successful collaboration at SXSW in Texas, Edinburgh’s delightful indiepopsters KID CANAVERAL (last seen round these parts wowing the Belladrum Seedlings stage) are touring with Fence Collective founder and 2011 Mercury Nominee, KING CREOSOTE, to promote their joint single, “Homerun and A Vow.” United by more than just the same set of initials, this should be a night of quality pop that they promise you’ll be able to “move around and flail your arms to,” and should go at least some way towards making up for the fact that Creosote (aka Kenny Anderson) didn’t win the Mercury Music prize for his Diamond Mine collaboration with Jon Hopkins. Anderson is obviously a man who thrives creatively on getting together with other people as he’ll be demonstrating here. The King will play first before joining the Kids “for a romp through KC classics”. But which KC? You’ll have to head along to find out...

BOBBY WELLINS’ Culloden Moor Suite is a sleeping giant of jazz and chamber music. An eloquent lament for the fallen in battle and a beautiful, soulful celebration of one of Scotland’s most haunting historical locations, it is a rarely visited masterpiece long deserving of a wider audience. His other piece is about Burns – a musical celebration of early family life through his inspirational writing to his fall from grace. With Wellins’ tenor saxophone – an entirely individual sound that is indelibly associated with Stan Tracey’s 1960s classic Under Milk Wood recording – as the leading voice at the head of Europe’s finest large scale jazz ensemble, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, this much-anticipated performance promises atmosphere, drama, spontaneous creativity and spiritually uplifting music. www.eden-court.co.uk

Alas a debut album Nothing Means Everything was followed by brothers falling out (where ve we heard that before?) and their record label pulling funding, meaning their new album, Canyons Of Echoes has been three years in the making. Well worth the wait though as they sound to us every bit as impressive as they were before. Perhaps the best bits are just about to begin. 23

ANNUAL HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA Alien Invasion - Close Encounters Of The UFO Kind: Ness Islands, Inverness, Fri & Sat 28-29 Oct, 6.30–8.30pm

FILM

The winter portion of this year’s Inverness Festivals programme starts with one of the most popular events staged in our city - the annual Halloween extravaganza on Ness Islands. This year’s show, which will be held on Friday and Saturday 28th and 29th October from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, promises to boldly go where no council event has gone before.

KIDS

“Alien Invasion - Close Encounters of the UFO Kind” featuring the creative talent of Eden Court Theatre’s Outreach team, Arts in Motion and the Highland Council’s Lighting Department, promises to be fun for the whole family, as the children of Inverness are asked to dress up as scarily as possible to save our city. Most Captains logs inform us that Aliens are terrified of little people that look like Zombies and Vampires, although they have been known to try to eat the odd one - purely in the interests of scientific curiosity - so it is hoped that enough children will turn up dressed as monsters to scare them away.

MUSIC

As nobody is sure if these particular Alien spaceships have visited Inverness before and they may already have spies living in disguise amongst us gathering information in preparation for a full sale invasion - so all spectators for the 2011 show will have to go through screening upon arrival at Ness Islands. Those spectators who fail the Festival team’s “Human-NESS test” may be placed in special quarantine camps while a panel of Human and Alien Assessors decide who gets to keep them. A fun show for children and aliens of all ages. Admission is free and so is the laughter! Don’t miss it.

This film will be of interest to anyone with experiences of dementia, or for people who want to know more about ways of connecting with people who are isolated by illness or disability. Editor’s note: Now, I was always taught at sports to keep my eye on the ball. Seems to me that the guy in the green here has his thoughts on other targets. I’m pretty sure aiming a blow at your opponent’s head is not in the rules, so if that’s what our boys are going to have to put up with, may I suggest that a whole big gang of us go down there and shout “he’s behind you!!!”, panto-style to stop these bog-dwellers in their dastardly tracks... ‘Mon the Shinty!

Scotland’s National Shinty Squads welcome their Irish Hurling & Camogie counterparts to Bught Park in a composite rules match, a form of the game(s) that remains one of the few team sports in the world without any dedicated clubs or leagues. Now that’s what we want from our sport. Combining shinty and hurling might seem odd (though the two sports are far more closely related than, say, chess and boxing, both of which have been combined with some success), but in fact the composite game was first played way back in 1896, though there was something of a hiatus until the 1920s followed by controversy as the British Government put pressure upon the Camanachd Association to cease from cooperating with the Gaelic Athletic Association, disapproving of their perceived anti-British viewpoint. However, universities in both countries kept the link going after the war and this led to a resumption of international fixtures between the two codes in the 1970s. After a long run of Irish successes, Scotland won four fixtures in a row from 2005 until Ireland reclaimed the title in 2009. There’s pride at stake then and, once you get your head around the way that an apparently lunatic concept actually makes for an entertaining game, getting along to give your support will be well rewarded. www.shinty.com

COMEDY: Various venues, thru Oct You’d think that most of the comedians in the country would have taken to their beds for a few months after the rigours of Edinburgh, but in fact autumn sees many of the big names cranking into gear for major (money spinning) tours - while lesser names keep the momentum going with plenty of gigging. And so this month finds us visited by more stand-ups than ever – I wonder which would win Celebrity Comedian Big Brother voted purely by Inverness?...

SPECIALS THEATRE

The enterprising Mull Theatre come to town with a production that recalls the proud tradition in Scottish theatre for being politically engaging as well as telling a good yarn. This drama finds a seaman (and naval boxing champion) coming home on leave to find his native Glasgow in the grip of industrial strife, with protests on the streets and the army sent in to maintain order. It’s the starting point for a story that widens its gaze to take in asylum and gulags, Glasgow, Invergordon and the Stalin-era Soviet bloc as well as contemporary Scotland, examining what can happen when authority is challenged.

SPORT

Elsewhere the laughs just keep on coming with Ironworks bringing CLIVE CARROLL on Thu 06 Oct, STEVE HALL on Tue 11 Oct, PHIL COOL on Thu 27 Oct and CRAIG CAMPBELL on Thu 03 Nov. Eden Court also has the always excellent GUILDED BALLOON bill on Sun 16 Oct and DANIEL SLOSS on Sun 23 Oct. Last but not least, the excellent JUST LAUGH monthly comedy nights at Hush are on Thu 06 Oct & Thu 03 Nov. For details of all the above, see listings pages P40-41...

Biggest names in town this month are, remarkably crammed into four days, with JIMMY CARR at Eden Court on Wed 12 & Thu 13 Oct and JASON MANFORD in the very same venue on Fri 14 & Sat 15 Oct. Carr is a regular visitor here (and ICA award-winner to boot) so with much of the audience bound to consist of people who’ve seen him before, it’ll be interesting to see how he keeps things fresh. This may well be time for him to think about sacking the TV overexposure and rote misanthropy since we suspect there are far more interesting facets to him than he might have been prepared to reveal so far. He’s a keen student of the workings of “the joke” so must be aware of the point at which it isn’t funny anymore. It’ll be interesting to see where he takes things from here. Manford was once on his way to potential national treasure status when helming The One Show, until an unfortunate collision between hubris, desire and social networking. Actually he never really seemed entirely comfortable as the anodyne presenter, proving far more suited to recent TV outings like empathetically hosting the surprisingly good Show Me The Funny, stand-up talent show. On that we got glimpses of the magnificent comedy skills that made him so popular in the first place and here’s an opportunity to see just how impressive he can be in full flow.

UNDER MILK WOOD @ Eden Court One Touch, 8pm. For many of us, Dylan Thomas’ finest moment will always be associated with Richard Burton’s magnificent recorded reading of it in 1954, his rich, resonant Welsh tones caressing the cracks between the meaning, understanding and communicating the thrilling energy of the language itself. Burton, alas, is no longer with us, but his nephew Guy Masterson first brought it to the stage eighteen years ago and has been touring it all over the world, enchanting audiences everywhere with a one-man show that does full justice to Thomas’ original tale of a day in the life of the 69 inhabitants of the fictitious town of Llareggub. With original music and “soundscape” by Matt Clifford, the work, originally conceived as a response to the bombing of Hiroshima is as affecting now as it was half a century ago, mixing the bawdy with the beautiful, the hilarious with the hauntingly melancholy. Only the Crumbliest... I’ve been making some repairs to my living room window and it’s got me thinking. Every day for a lot more than a year now I’ve passed my living room window on the way to my car and thought “I’ll need to fix that beading soon, before the rain gets to the wood underneath and it starts to crumble like a Cadbury Flake”. Then my thinking would usually go along the lines of “mmm flake, better Stop off at Tesco on my way to work”, the window forgotten I’d get in the car and drive off. Next day as I left for work I’d casually glance at my living room window and think “I’ll need to fix that beading...” You probably get the picture. Like I say, this has gone on for well over a year and if I’m honest probably more like three - I seem to have an amazing capacity to put up with things. You know how it is; Christmas comes and goes and suddenly it’s August and you’re so used to the tree in the living room that you feel it’d be weird without it and anyway the shops have this year’s Christmas stuff in so it’s not so out of place .. and then suddenly it’s next August. ken kelman suddenly it’s next August. I’m not saying this is a virtue merely stating it as a facT... though putting up with things is a skill that comes in handy in long checkout queues. One day for some reason I decided to have a proper look at the window, before the frame really did crumble like a flake... (“mmm flake...”) ...No! Focus! This really has to be done. I’ll buy a bit of beading, I reckon, on the way to town, fit it tomorrow and everything will be all right for another few years. Tentatively I touch the wood under the beading with my trusty chisel - almost immediately it crumbles, rather like a Cadbury Flake I remember thinking, and I’m left with a huge gouge out of my window frame. Ever the optimist I think “I can fix this ... It’s just a few inches of a gap, not that deep, half an inch maybe, three-quarters tops... I’ll get some of that ready mixed wood-filler stuff... that’s what it’s for after all - the window will be good as new in no time”. At the supermarket DIY section I opt for the cheapest ready mixed filler, surmising that it’s probably all the same anyway - how many different factories can there be that make such stuff. On the way to the checkout I slip a Flake in my basket and prepare to wait in

New Events now at:

a long queue. I see from the blurb on the packet (the filler not the Flake) that it’s not recommended for deep holes, holes over a quarter of an inch. Hmmm... Choosing to think that that’s just there to put off the wary amateur, in the hope they’ll call out an expensive joiner and thus keep the economy moving - I decide to ignore it. It is after all only a recommendation. Here are the words you’ve been waiting for: BIG MISTAKE! If you exceed the “recommendation” and fill a hole more than a quarter of an inch deep in our cold, wet climate - it never ever dries out! And when you once more tentatively touch it with your trusty chisel it once more crumbles like a Cadbury Flake, or perhaps more like a Galaxy Ripple because to be fair it had sort of hardened on the surface. Here’s what it got me thinking, why hasn’t anyone invented a decent wood filler that actually needs cold wet conditions to harden? Living in Britain as we do this is our climate’s default state. It’s pointless to make wood filling material that needs several days of warm sunshine in order to cure properly because we almost never get that. Imagine a filler that once applied you only had to wait for a quick shower of rain before it was completely fixed and stronger than the wood it replaced - ‘tis a DIY enthusiasts dream and just one of the things I think about in long checkout queues. Don’t take recycling lying down... FRANK WILLEMS is a young Dutch designer on a mission. In common with many new designers he has one eye on saving the planet and one eye on style.

“Why create new products when there’s so much available already?” After a visit to a waste processing facility, Frank realised that all the products he saw had a destination, all except the poor old mattress. No one knew what to do with mattresses as they kept getting stuck in the shredding machinery, so Frank decided to give the lowly mattress a new purpose in life and the Madam Rubens stool was born. Frank bends and folds the mattress, then lashes it to the legs of antique chairs finally spraying the whole piece with a water resistant foam coating and a pliable soft paint. It forms a comfortable, voluminous seat with a quirky and eye-catching appeal. The Madam Rubens series includes the a stool, a chair and a pouf. www.frankwillems.net

Highland Property Market in August The average house price in the Highlands increased by almost 4% in the three months to the end of August, compared to figures for the previous quarter, according to the latest statistics released by HSPC. However the average price for the three months to August is down 1% on the same period in 2010. The Highland figures look stronger than recent average prices released for Scotland as a whole. The Lloyds TSB Scotland Scottish house price monitor focussed on the three months to July, but reported that house prices across the country had fallen by 3.7%. At £169,485 the average Highland house price in August also remains well ahead of the £152,820 Scottish

average in the recent Register for Scotland figures for the second quarter of 2011. While noting the figures as encouraging, HSPC point out that the underlying picture is of a property market showing no sustained trends. Small price fluctuations that have affected the market locally and nationally in recent months, look set to continue. While some buyers – particularly first-time buyers – are still finding it difficult, or impossible, to obtain a mortgage, others who can afford to purchase are holding back because of concerns about their economic prospects. What is needed to stimulate the housing market, HSPC believe, is the return of financial confidence and an easing in the availability

of mortgages. It is hoped that the proposed Homes for Scotland mortgage indemnity scheme may help by supporting those who can afford a mortgage, but are currently excluded because of the high level of deposit required. With the number of properties coming on the market continuing to exceed the number of buyers, the choice of houses remains at record levels. Active properties on the HSPC property register during August were up 2% on the previous month and 21% up on August 2010. For those prepared to make the commitment to buy, this means that property in the Highlands is a buyer’s market, with a record number of properties to choose from at prices that remain keen. A clear indication of the continuing

strong interest in Highland properties comes in the number of enquiries HSPC are receiving on their website at www.hspc.co.uk. With enquiries up 10% in August, compared with the same month last year, it is clear that pent-up demand is growing. HSPC are investing in new technology to help buyers find their ideal home New easy to use computers will replace the wall cards in the Highland Solicitors Property Centre in Queensgate, Inverness. These will allow buyers, whilst comfortably seated, to quickly and easily target their new home. They can then print the brochures of all the properties they like to take away. For those who are a little bit shy of new technology there will still be folders with all the properties

in them to flick through and of course the friendly staff at the Centre will be on hand to assist. We are confident though that buyers will love the new technology. Sellers will also quickly see the benefits of this investment. It will be much easier to match buyers to their property and they will also be saving money. Currently the Centre needs a substantial stock of pre-printed brochures for each property from the seller’s solicitor but with these changes this will no longer be necessary. There will be no charge for the brochures printed by enquirers at the Centre. Print on demand brochures are also excellent news for the environment as it means no brochure wastage and helps the Centre in its ongoing drive to reduce its carbon footprint.

The Centre will also be refurbished to compliment the new technology and create a bright and welcoming environment to browse the largest selection of properties in the Highlands. These changes are due to occur at the end of 2011 when the Centre will be closed to the public for up to two weeks. This will not affect the registration of new properties nor the publication of the Review. The website www.hspc.co.uk and its newly launched mobile smart phone service will also continue to be available 24/7 . Whether you are a seller or buyer the staff at the Centre forward to welcoming you for a look round the new look Centre and a demonstration of the new technology at the end of this year.

EATING OUT Pattaya Thai Restaurant 54 High St, Elgin 01343 551577 A thoroughly wet day in Elgin had me diving for the most convenient place I could find for lunch. A slightly inauspicious entrance to Pattaya Thai Restaurant did not fill me with a huge amount of expectation but once I had ascended the stairs, I was transported away from the dreary wet streets outside to a whole new, exotic, world. I loved everything about the interior, from the purple, firecracker shaped napkins to the pink flourescent fish tank. It combines a fresh modern feel with bags of character and quirks. The menu is extensive and covers everything from seafood, vegetarian, duck, beef, chicken and beyond. They offer a special lunchtime deal of 2 courses for £7.95 and there is plenty of choice and variety on that menu too. We ordered fairly regular fare for starters of Vegetable Tempura and Spring Rolls and they were presented elegantly and originally and both were served with a delightfully zingy sweet chilli dip. The vegetables used in the tempura were super fresh and the batter crisp and light - a real winner. Main meals were Red Vegetable Curry which was chocka block full of fresh tasty ingredients in a lemongrass and coconut sauce. I chose an egg fried rice to accompany my curry and it really was excellent, plenty of egg and the rice had a bit of bite to it, just the way I like it. Our other

main course was Hed Rabert stir fried mixed mushrooms with vegetables, cashew nuts, chilli and garlic in a spicy sauce. The mushrooms were coated in an amazing sauce and tasted unlike any mushrooms I’ve had before. It really was an exceptional dish made all the more appealing by the accompanying Pad Thai, stir-fried rice noodles with bean sprouts, egg and green beans, a pleasingly interesting alternative to rice. The service was quick and friendly - we were able to be in and out well within the hour, which makes it a great place to lunch - especially at that price too!! Pattaya may not look it from the outside, (though I must say they have tried hard to make their little entrance appealing ) but it is a superior Thai restaurant and one that I would certainly travel from Inverness to eat in again. Elgin, you’ve got yourselves a good one there - use it wisely. Come and Enjoy The Party Atmosphere Head chef John McCruden and staff of Chapter One in Forres have cooked up a recipe for everyone to “Party Hard” this festive season. The stylish restaurant has a preChristmas lunch and dinner menu guaranteed to bring a sparkle to everyone’s eye. And not only that, the staff will have you rocking around the Christmas tree to the sounds of nineties heavy metal classic Party Hard by Andrew WK. Calling themselves The Urban Kitchen Utensil Band, the staff have recorded a cover version of the song to raise money for charity. Costing just £1 for a CD, the cash will go towards projects by pupils at Forres Academy to help children in Malawi. The band will perform the track live at the Tollbooth in Forres High Street at 10am on December 10

and the CD can be purchased in the restaurant. “Party Hard” will be the theme at the restaurant throughout the festive season, starting when the Christmas menu is launched on November 26. The three-course Christmas Lunch features tantalising traditional offerings with a modern take. Options for starters include Trio of Melon with Raspberry Sorbet and Fruit of Forest, or Roasted Parsnip Soup with Red Pepper and Gruyere Cheese Soufflé. The main course has choices such as Butter Roast Turkey Breast with Italian Herb Stuffing, Roasted Vegetables and Potato Tartlet, or Pan Fried Fillet of Salmon with Prawn and Spring Onion Risotto and Courgette Bhajia.

Desserts include Chocolate Pyramid, or Christmas Pudding with Brandy Sauce. The evening menu has even more mouth-watering dishes to choose from, such as Pan Seared Scallops with Cauliflower and Spring Onion Risotto, or Duck with Christmas Spice and Orange Pate to start with. As well as turkey, mains include 8oz Sirloin Steak with Marinated Balsamic Tomatoes, glazed with Buffalo Mozzarella and Creamy Garlic Potato Tartlet, or Fillet of Sea Bass stuffed with Smoked Salmon Mousse, Prawn and Chive Butter Sauce, Roasted Vegetables and Creamy Garlic Potato Tartlet. Desserts include Lemon Tart and Baked Alaska with Raspberry Coulis.

Chapter One is renowned for its fine Scottish-Italian cuisine, contemporary décor and reasonable prices so it’s advisable to book over the Christmas period. The gastronomic delights will be complemented by a sense of fun as John and his team from the kitchen head into the dining room after the last meal of the night has been served. They will hand out word sheets, tambourines and maracas, inviting the diners to see who can sing the fastest verse of the Twelve Days of Christmas. “It’s all part of the fun and encourages diners to enjoy the party atmosphere,” says John. COATS FOR YOUR SHAPE... As the autumn chill hits our bones now is the time to dig out your winter coat – but have you got the right one to suit your shape and size? The right coat is very important, especially to us Highland folk as we are wearing them for so much of the year! So here’ a quick look at some basic body shapes and a guide to what coat to choose... u THE PEAR SHAPE. The classic “does my bum look big in is?” look. You want to show off your slender top half while drawing attention away from the more rounded hips and bum. Jackets that finish above the hip line tend to suit this shape most but if it’s a coat you really want then choose something that draws the eye to the centre of the body, such as frills. The classic cropped boucle jacket, originated by Chanel never really goes out of fashion and really flatters this shape. (pic: Top Shop Jersey Boucle Cropped Jacket)

u THE HOURGLASS SHAPE. The classic “36, 24, 36” hips and bust the same size with a nipped in waist. You want to show of your curves with a belted coat which draws the eye to your small waist. The classic trench coat is great for this shape and comes in many different shapes and colours.

u PETIT. The classic short-arse, well, 5ft 2”-and-under is the accepted wisdom - and with many high street stores offering a petit range there is no need to stick to the kids departments. Your best look is a 3/4 length coat as the smaller frame can be swamped by a full length coat. The 3/4 pea coat is perfect for your size and offers a fantastic array of colours and styles. (pic: Dorothy Perkins Camel Short Pea Coat)

u TALL. Over 5ft 10” is what is generally considered tall for a woman. Depending on how you feel about your height, whether you want to detract from it or show it off, you have the widest choice of styles that suit you. If you want to defuse your height then something like the oversized boyfriend-style jacket works well or you could create horizontal lines across the body, with layering or pattern. Great for you is the Asymmetrical zipped Parker by Superdry. (pic: Asymmetric Zip Wool Blouson by Alexander McQueen)

KINESIO TAPE: Until Genetic Engineering Becomes An Option Ever wondered what the brightly coloured tape is that you’ve seen on top athletes, pro tennis players or on professional footballers? This is KINESIO TAPE and it has taken the rehabilitation and sports medicine world by storm.

FILM

Kinesio tape has been developed over the past 25 years. It can be used to treat a wide range of sports injuries and orthopaedic conditions. Examples include, Achilles tendonitis, hamstring injures and low back pain. It is fundamentally different from traditional athletic taping, involving taping over and around muscles in order to assist and give support or to prevent over-contraction. This technique allows the practitioner to support muscles whilst maintaining full range of motion – a key factor for many sports and activities where the maintenance of full flexibility is important.

KIDS

Kinesio taping works with 4 main functions: 1 2 3 4

Pain – reduces pain by taking pressure off the pain receptors. Lymphatic – Facilitates lymphatic drainage to help decrease swelling and bruising Joint – adjusts mis-alignment to aid muscle function Muscle – reconditions abnormal tension and strengthens the muscle.

MUSIC

The tape itself has 140% elasticity, matching that of the skin. It can be worn for 4 – 5 days as is fully waterproof, so doesn’t require constant re-application, allowing improved carry over of treatment to target tissues. It is cotton and latex free so fully breathable and comes in a range of colours. Content provided by Fiona Hogg @ PHYSIO INVERNESS www.physioinverness.co.uk 07764 477204
