Why go on holiday when there’s so much on? The Scottish Open put the Highlands on a global stage (albeit one drenched by apocalyptic weather conditions) so now those of us who live here can get justifiably smug at just how much is going on and this month is no exception. There’s plenty to pack in over the weeks ahead from THE SPEYSIDE STAGES RALLY, MORAY CARNIVAL, LOGAN’S FUN DAY, plus many musical adventures - from this year’s MUSIC MANIA in Elgin City Centre, to the BAND OF HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL MARINES, BLAZIN’ FIDDLES, SPOOKYMEN, PHILOMENA BEGLEY and the DA VINCI TRIO all playing in area - whilst over Inverness way there are performances from the likes of BOYZONE, PHIL’N’ALY and at Belladrum TEXAS, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN and ANNA CALVI, plus the BLAS FESTIVAL gets underway too. There’s also the prospect of INVERNESS BOOK FESTIVAL, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, INVERNESS TATTOO, MONSTER SWIM across Loch Ness, a new MONSTER FM broadcast month, INTERESTING ART all over the place and much, much more.

GROW TOGETHER: CONCRETE POETRY IN BRAZIL & SCOTLAND, to 7 Aug Includes work by some of the foremost concrete poets. Concrete poetry developed through the 50s & 60s - conventional poetic structures are discarded in favour of exploring graphic properties of words and their arrangements. Setting aside literal meanings concrete poetry finds common-ground between all languages. In this it is inherently international in outlook. CONCRETELY IMMATERIAL, 14 Aug to 11 Sep, Joint exhibition with ‘gray) (area’ gallery in Croatia. The exhibition explores the possible physical nature of thought and the ‘virtual’. Virtual states and processes are variously employed in the artworks, especially through computer technology. In line with the title, the exhibition proposes these processes, the works’ effects in the spaces and the experience of the viewers as being substantial and real. h-i-c-a.org

FILM KIDS

The combination of Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams is an alluring one with the latter responsible for the likes of Mission Impossible, Cloverfield and the never-ending Lost , while Spielberg pretty much made the blueprint for sci-fi kids adventure. Reviews of this have been mixed though, with some claiming a glorious return to heartwarming storytelling and others saying it s like ET without the charm . There s no doubting the authenticity of the 70s retro feel in the story of a strange presence in a small town following a train derailment or the strong acting from a young cast that includes Joel Courtney and Dakota Fanning s sister Elle, so it s got more going for it than most.

Directed by John Michael McDonagh, brother of Martin, the man who made the wonderful In Bruges, this is set to be just as much of a word-of-mouth success and wowed critics and fans alike at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Brendon Gleason plays an unorthodox cop in small town Ireland who teams up with twitchy FBI agent Don Cheadle (an inspired piece of casting) to bust a drug-smuggling ring. As with any film, things are made even better by Mark Strong being in it and the whole is a witty, beautifully written piece of cinema. Some talented family those McDonaghs.

THEATRE

Charlotte Gainsbourg has always been considered acting royalty in France, but with each film her international reputation grows stronger, even if along the way she feels the need to dispense with anything approaching boundaries of taste/sense. The great thing with her is you never know what to expect, from tortured soul caught up in self abuse to elegantly disconcerting films like this where a family decides whether to fell a tree that the daughter believes to be inhabited by the spirit of her dead father. It s based, wonderfully, on a novel called Our Father Who Art In The Tree .

Set in Finisterre, the yarns involve ferocious seas, dancing dogs and drums, surely the only ingredients ever needed. Could be something of a children s classic in the making so this is a great opportunity to hear all about it from the man himself. He ll be in conversation with Bryan Beattie, writer and columnist who has just launched Big Sky Press.

MUSIC MANIA Sat 13 July Elgin Plainstones & City Centre

Saturday 13th August sees the 2nd live music day – Music Mania – in the City Centre organised by Elgin BID . Following on from the success of the last year’s event this one is bigger and brighter (!) with more acts and entertainment. This makes it a special family fun day while also promoting the wealth of special musical talent we have in Moray. There will be a range of live bands performing outside the St Giles Church, acoustic sets at the East End opposite the Muckle Cross and Elgin High School buskers will be performing at Batchen Lane and in the St Giles Centre. In addition music and a face painter will entertain in the shopping centre and Bubbles the Clown will be with us from 11.30am throughout the centre area.

16

The day starts off with the special Market at 10am which will include a number of City Centre business and other services including Elgin Youth Café and McDonalds (butcher), Lossie Wynd. The music kicks off at 11am with local band Fortunate Sun. This band got a great reception at last year’s event and also at the 2010 Winter Festival. The band have a strong local following and they will be playing a range of well - known songs. Also performing will be local bands Foxtone, Third Connection, Fat King George and Bittersuite who will play an acoustic set. In addition we will also be welcoming the 1004’s from Edinburgh and Davy Munro who will be playing an unplugged set. There will also be a ‘name the band’ treasure hunt where you will have to test your music knowledge by solving a number of clues, which will be in the windows of various city centre retailers for the chance to win £50, £30 and £25 (to be spent with a city centre retailer). For on-going developments and added attractions go to www.elgin.co.uk/events and find us on Facebook.

BLAS FESTIVAL: various venues, 09–17 Sep As the summer ends it’s time for BLAS FESTIVAL, now in its seventh year, an event embedded spiritually and culturally in the Highlands and Islands. Celebrating Gaelic cultural identity through music, performances take place right across the Highlands, from village halls to major venues and from a ceilidh on Eigg to a gig in a restaurant on Cairngorm Mountain. There’s always been an initiative for putting something back into the community meaning that there’s a lasting legacy to Blas and it gets bigger by the year with many fans coming from right across the world to experience the range of performances and events. And music is just the starting point for a nine day celebration that also includes a schools and community programme, a travelling art gallery, Rangers Events and the final of shinty’s most prestigious competition, The Camanachd Cup. For details of everything that’s going on, see this month’s and next month’s ICA and visit

FOLK

www.blas-festival.com THE OUTSIDE TRACK @ Inverness Airport Restaurant, Mon 12 Sep Band-in-residence for the whole Blas Festival, THE OUTSIDE TRACK include members from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton and Vancouver, their combination of Canadian, Scottish and Irish music and song communicated with fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar, flute, stepdance and vocals. It makes for a suitably ebullient sound as you’ll see as they tour the whole of the Highlands from Ullapool MacPhail Centre on Fri 09 to Poolewe Village Hall on Sat 17, taking in Inverness Airport on Mon 12, an unlikely location, but one which has proved something of a hit with festival goers. THE HIGHLAND VOYAGE @ Jacobite Queen, Loch Ness, Fri 09 Sep An always-popular annual start to proceedings, this time with a Para Handy theme to proceedings devised and performed by ALLAN MACDONALD of the famous Glenuig piping brothers. Cruise down Loch Ness with food and wine from The Red Poppy. Always sells out fast so snap up a ticket now. CELEBRATING THE REGAL PIPE @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 10 Sep A veritable extravaganza of piping with the aforementioned MACDONALD BROTHERS OF GLENUIG, MAIREAREAD GREEN, SEUDAN, ANGUS MACCOLL and 2010’s World Junior Champions, OBAN HIGH SCHOOL PIPE BAND. You want to hear how the instrument should be played? Make this your first stop. Blas 2011 Commission: HEISGEIR BY JULIE FOWLIS @ Phipps Hall, Beauly, Fri 09 Sep Heisgeir is another name for the Monach isles and it’s there that one of our very favourite Gaelic musicians, JULIE FOWLIS has family connections with. Mixing traditional material with newly composed music, she draws on the geography, history and legend of these now uninhabited isles for a newly commissioned work that incorporates lyrical, filmic and varied narrative and musical devices. She’ll be touring it throughout the festival, featuring as well as her own exquisite voice, acclaimed musicians EAMON DOORLEY, ROSS MARTIN and DUNCAN CHISHOLM. MUSIC ON THE MOUNTAIN @ Ptarmigan Restaurant, Cairngorm, Fri 09 Sep FEIS SPE is 21 years old and to mark the occasion they and their friends are putting on the highest gig of the festival and perhaps of the whole year. Enjoy a scenic train ride up cairngorm to the Ptarmigan Restaurant for an evening of entertainment from Feis Spe participants past and present. FEIS ROIS: ROOTS & SHOOTS @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Sun 11 Sep Celebrating a quarter century of FEIS ROIS and the influence it’s had on nurturing generations of young musicians in the Highlands. There’ll be 25 performers on stage including CORRINA HEWAT, LAUREN MACCOLL and EILIDH MACKENZIE, all showcasing the future of traditional music and demonstrating that its legacy is in safe hands. BLAS FESTIVAL CLUB @ Bogbain Farm, Sat 10 & Sat 17 Sep A guaranteed good time is in order with some of the best acts from the festival popping and performing, plus food, drink, late night opening and, best of all, it’s free to get in.

BOYZONE: Northern Meeting Park, Sat 27 Aug Despite the torrential rain (which made the opening rendition of “Waterfront” all the more apposite), the Simple Minds gig at Northern Meeting Park last month succeeded in proving just how good city centre gigs can be. So let’s hope the sun comes out for BOYZONE, still doing their thing (alas without the much-missed Steven Gateley) after almost twenty years together. They’re promising all the hits, plus tracks from their new album and screams of delight will no doubt fill the air for the duration. Boyzone are destined to remain forever as legend in the music world for the simple brilliance of their appearance on Ireland’s Late Late Show - host Gay Byrne was more or less speechless - not an affliction he’s familiar with. It was excrutiating - yet - stars were born. Can’t say they weren’t giving their all. Every bit as committed as Richey Manic’s razor stunt... Obviously, if you don’t know it, YouTube it!

2011 INVERNESS BOOK FESTIVAL: Eden Court, Wed 10–Sat 13 Aug One of the strengths of the Inverness Book Festival, now in its 8th year, is the way that it provides both disparate and consistently entertaining opportunities for book fans to see events that take the written word as starting points. So, in recent years we’ve been able to see, for example, popscientist Adam Hart Davis theorising on Nessie, Edwyn Collins singing songs to supplement a memoir by his missus Grace, novelist A.L.Kennedy switching from humorous raconteurship to an exclusive reading of a moving extract from her forthcoming novel and the owner of a restaurant on Skye revealing all about emergency drives to Inverness when supplies in the kitchen run out. Something for everyone then and proof that the world of books is a gateway to all sorts of diverse inspiration. This year’s event, running alas for just four days, is a classily confident affair (right from the beautifully designed brochure paying homage to Penguin) with a load of events worth taking in. Here are some of our highlights and you can find more on the Kids and Film pages. For full details of the festival go to

www.invernessbookfestival.co.uk

SIMON VARNELL @ OneTouch, Wed 10 5pm Local author who, for some reason took it upon himself to visit every place in the world called “Mullet”. An admirable mission that took in everywhere from Australia to Albania and one that resulted in a hugely entertaining book, “Up The Creek Without A Mullet”. He’ll be in conversation with KIT FRASER of Hootananny and, more recently, Joy Of Taste. FAMILY LEGENDS @ The Maclean Room, Sat 13, 6.30pm Scottish Book Trust ran a national story project entitled Family Legends, designed to get people writing and sharing family stories. More than 700 people took part, and a selection were published and broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. As part of the project, authors Mae Stewart and WILLIE ROBERTSON led free public writing workshops for people who wanted to write about their life experiences. Robertson and some of the contributors discuss the experience. LOUISE WELSH @ OneTouch, Wed 10, 8.15pm Louise Welsh’s 2002 novel The Cutting Room saw her chosen as one of Britain’s Best First Novelists by the Guardian, as well as winning the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Dagger. Her latest novel Naming The Bones sees English lecturer Murray Watson journey from the calm of the National Library of Scotland to the mud of an ancient burial ground. She’ll talk about her writing and other projects – from musicals to arts collaborationswith MFR’s NICKY MARR. ANDY WIGHTMAN @ OneTouch, Thu 11, 5pm Andy Wightman’s first book,” Who Owns Scotland?”, revolutionised the debate about land and ownership in this country and is seen as the definitive work explaining how land has conferred economic and political power from Robert The Bruce to Willie Ross and James V to Donald Dewar. Fifteen years on “The Poor Had No Lawyers” takes the reader on a voyage of discovery into Scotland’s history to find out how and why landowners got their hands on the millions of acres of land that were once held in common, telling the untold story of how Scotland’s legal establishment and politicians managed to appropriate it through legal fixes.

CHRISTOPHER BROOKMYRE & BILLY FRANKS @ OneTouch, Sat 13, 8.15pm Festival favourite Brookmyre is one of the country’s most popular writers and this summer sees the release of his fourteenth novel, “Where The Bodies Are Buried”. His work often features references to the lyrics of musician Billy Franks, ex of The Faith Brothers. Indeed their 1985 hit “Country Of The Blind” provided the title for Brookmyre’s second novel. As the closing event of the festival, the two of them will be talking about stories that inspired songs and performing songs that inspired stories.

LOCH NESS MARATHON:

South Side of Loch Ness, Sun 02 Oct [entries by 12 Sep] Yes, we know it’s not on until October, but that’s barely the blink of an eye in terms of planning, preparation and training. Plus, with this being the tenth anniversary of one of the most magnificent marathons around, places are going to go quick sharpish so you’d better get on the case if you want to take part. It’s the biggest marathon in Scotland which takes place in a rural setting, attracting people from all over the world and bringing lots of opportunities for all kinds of runners to take part – either in the marathon or one of the associated running events (Baxters River Ness 10K; 10K Corporate Challenge; 5K Fun Run; and even the Wee Nessie). To mark this special 10th anniversary year of the event, runners intending to participate in the 2011 marathon, and who have completed all previous nine Loch Ness Marathons, are invited to register for a unique memento to be awarded at the finish of the 2011 run. Please get in touch with them at info@lochnessmarathon.com if you’ll be taking part in your 10th Loch Ness Marathon this year. For full registration details, training tips and more, check out their extensive website at lochnessmarathon.com If you can’t wait that long for a bit of marathon action and, indeed, if 26 miles seems rather too much like a quick sprint down the shops, you might be interested in theSPEYSIDE WAY ULTRA MARATHON which takes place on Sat 27 Aug, starting at Ballindalloch Old Railway Station. It’s a 36.5 mile event which will start at 9am with a bus leaving Buckie at 7.30am. There will be a nine hour time limit for this race, so you have until 6pm to finish. And if you’re still able to stand there’s a ceilidh afterwards. For more see speysidewayrace.webnode.com

TANS: hold on to what you’ve got!

Making The Most Of You:

So you’ve done all the hard work - lounging by the pool, lazing on the beach or climbing to the top of the tallest hill on the hottest day (all done using a high factor sun cream of course because you’re not a fool!)... what ever way you managed it, you’ve got yourself a beautiful, natural TAN - and now you want to KEEP IT for as long as possible. The real key to making your tan last a long time is to have EXFOLIATED and MOISTURISED before you hit the beach - but it is also helpful to do this afterwards. After sun-tanning the skin is often rough and dry and that stops your tan being as visible as it should be. Skin will regain its colour if you remove dead skin cells. Doing a skin peel once a week will also give your skin a more golden look. It is also recommended that you use aftersun lotion instead of moisturiser after each shower and maybe top your tan up with the slightly tinted body moisturisers. Enjoy the rest of the summer and remember using sun cream is the best way to get a safe tan.

NB: Last month’s piece on tips for fake tans was supplied by Lilac Miller, who many of you will know from Sleeping Beauty Salons at Margaret Street and Eastgate Centre. sleepingbeautysalon.com

Making The Most Of You: Turning FAT into FIT can also be FUN. u Each year brings a raft of new crazes to hit the fitness scene. Last year BOOT CAMPS and OUTDOOR GYMS were all the rage. I’m a huge fan of the new outdoor gym at BELLFIELD PARK myself - check it out if you haven’t already, you don’t even need to have the excuse of entertaining the kids. u This year the UK-wide focus has been on CHILDREN’S HEALTH, as improving the fitness of our children has never been more important with childhood obesity increasing at an alarming rate. Many health centres these days are offering classes designed specifically to get younger people fitter and educating their parents on healthy living. u DANCE of all types has also grown in popularity as a way of keeping fit with shows like Strictly Come Dancing and So You Think You Can Dance gripping the nation. ZUMBA came along and swept us all up in it’s magic mix of latin dance steps and fitness exercises - one the whole family can do together. u TRIATHLON is Britain’s fastest growing sport and there has also been a significant increase in people taking up the 3 individual sports of swimming, running and cycling in their own right. u So keeping fit does not need to be a joyless experience, you can get together with a group of friends to do a sport you all enjoy or you could join an exercise class - or why not even start your own fitness group if there isn’t one that suits you. You don’t have to be an expert for you and your friends to get together and keep each other motivated while you get fit - if I remember rightly I saw an advert in these very pages last month for Gym & Dance Studio space available to hire down at the Ice Centre building.

“The Imaginarium of Cookery” I INVITED BAMBI ROUND FOR DINNER TONIGHT I hope he turns up... I’m starving

Fillet of Venison with Chicken & Tarragon Mousse Venison is the term applied to deer meet. Once thought to be more of a food source for the poor, venison is now prized as a culinary delight. It is also much higher in nutritional value than bovine meat because it is lower in fat and contains far more protein. Today’s venison may be grown on a deer farm; these are mostly the source for restaurants and groceries where it is sold. Some deer farms are also hunting grounds, where hunters can shoot the deer and then get help preparing the meat to take home. The popularity of deer farms is rising along with the popularity of venison. This a great way to cook fillet of venison because we are surrounding the fillet with a mousse then wrapping in parmaham this stops the venison from overcooking and keeps it pink inside. You will need to preorder this from the butcher and they will remove the fine sinue they call silver hair from the fillet.

How Good Is Good Enough? How Bad Is Too Bad? Many people, while admitting they have sinned, think that they are still good enough to go to Heaven on their own merits. Others think they have sinned so much that they are too bad to go to Heaven.

How good is good enough? Just how good does a person have to be to earn eternal life? According to God’s standard (the only standard that really counts) a person would have to live an absolutely perfect life to earn eternal life. Not one lie; not one bad thought; not one disrespectful word to their parents, etc. Perfect. Do you think you have fulfilled and maintained this strict standard? Romans 3:19 says, “...what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” You see we have all broken God’s law and the whole world stands guilty before God! No one can argue that they have lived a perfect life. No one … not you, not me, no one. We don’t like to think about it, but it’s true …we all have sinned – broken God’s law (Romans 3:10, 23). We have ALL offended a holy God, who will by no means pass by sin.

How bad is too bad? Maybe you think you have sinned so much that there is no forgiveness for you. God is Holy, but He loves to forgive. God loves you and is not willing that any should perish. He showed his love toward us in that “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). To those who turn from their sin and receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord, He assures us, “I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). . We do not have to go to that place of torment which the Lord Jesus calls hell.

So, none are without sin, but none are without hope, either. The Lord wants “all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4). A sinner in Bible times asked the question “What do I have to do to be saved?” The answer was simple, yet profound, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31). On the cross of Calvary, Jesus Christ was satisfying the just demands of God’s law against sinners - He was made sin that we might, through him, be made righteous. In order for God to no longer see us as guilty hell-deserving sinners, and fit us for heaven, we each need by faith to personally accept that Christ died in our place. God’s redeeming love for sinners is found only in Christ, and the sinner is out of Christ. Put your trust in the finished work (death, burial, and resurrection) of the Lord Jesus Christ, and God will save you by faith in His Son and give you the gift of the Holy Spirit to enable you to live for Him and know Him as your Lord.“...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Be done with your pride and bow your knee to the Lord Jesus. Only when a sinner turns from his sin and bows to Jesus as Lord and Saviour, can he have eternal life. No matter how good you think you are or how bad you think you are, the Lord saves all those who come to Him in faith. The Lord Jesus says “ him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

Reject Him no longer. Eternity in Hell is a long time to remember that you rejected Christ.

NO ONE IS SO GOOD THAT THEY DON’T NEED TO BE SAVED. NO ONE IS SO BAD THAT THEY CAN’T BE SAVED.

“The Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.” Galatians 3:22
