July: Why not, eh? Golf is a fore letter word...:

Maybe we should be calling this the Fore! Word, as the area’s going to be the golfing focus of Europe when the SCOTTISH OPEN comes to its new home at Castle Stuart by Nairn (7-10th). It’s looking unlikely that Rory McIlroy will be taking part, but there’ll be plenty of the world’s best - and more visitors around than ever before - but that’s just the start of a month that positively bursting at the seams with things to see and do. Aside from such treats as the FORRES HIGHLAND GAMES, the CONTINENTAL MARKET in Elgin and the frankly painful Wildhearts WOLFTREK, there’s big music events - like cover stars SIMPLE MINDS playing in Inverness, nu-folk queen LAURA MARLING up for a Highland tour and, of course, the family-friendly fest that is BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART. Elsewhere you’ll find Big Fat Electric going PLASTIC FANTASTIC, a SEASIDE SAFARI at Spey Bay, a talk on SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES and yet more music from DOUGIE MACLEAN, PHILOMENA BEGLEY, OI POLLOI!, MICHAEL HAMPTON plus the LOSSIEMOUTH FOLK FEST, ABBA tribute and more. We’ve a feeling it’s going to be rather a busy summer. Hold... and... GO!!!!...

SPEYFEST: Fochabers, Tue 26 - Sun 31 Jul At the end of July the Playing Fields on East Street in the Moray town of Fochabers will be home to the 16th annual Speyfest weekend, 4 days and nights of the best in traditional and contemporary celtic music. Once again this FOLK/TRAD:

year’s festival is a mix of seated concerts and standing gigs, five hours of music at the Festival Night on Sat 30 Jul, the music marathon that is the Survivors Ceilidh, a Craft Fair and the Festival Club. The line-up features the biggest names from the world of Scottish music alongside international acts from the USA and Finland. All the events are “undercover” and the festival site is fully licensed offering a wide range of refreshments in the Beer Tent as well as hot food from a number of on-site concessions. Building on the success of the more intimate concerts at previous Speyfests, the festival begins with “In Session” Nights at The Fochabers Institute. Tuesday sees BRIAN MCNEILL with his audio/visual presentation, Back O’ The North Wind. Using five instruments and hundreds of pictures projected onto a screen, Brian brings together music, story and visual image to tell the tale of six Scots who emigrated, over the last two hundred and fifty years, to North America. Wednesday features two hugely talented multi-instrumentalists, MAIREARAD GREEN (accordion/pipes) and ANNA MASSIE (guitar/fiddle/banjo) while CACHD-ACH-CRUAIDH will be performing at Thursday’s session night with their mix of rock and roll classics and Celtic Rock anthems. Throughout the festival there will be an opportunity for people to get together and join in with the music sessions in the Speyfest Pub and exchange or learn a new tune or two or even sing a song. Tickets for this year’s festival are now on sale through www.thebooth.co.uk. The ticket caravan will be open in the evenings from Monday 4th July at the Fochabers Public Institute. Concession tickets are available for many of the events at this year’s festival. The reduced prices are available to the over 60’s and the under 18’s. In addition, entry to Thursday’s opening concert, the Friday concert and the survivors ceilidh on Sunday is free to children aged 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. 2011 Line up includes: EDDI READER, DUNCAN CHISHOLM and friends, The Chair, Skerryvore, Shona Donaldson, Anna Massie and Mairearad Green, Tsuumi Sound System, Babelfish, Tyde, Breabach, Brian McNeill, Saltfishforty, Dr Mango and The Chickpeas, RURA, Ceòlan, The Hot Seats, The Fochabers Fiddlers, Cachd-ach-Cruaidh and Tour Bus Fortune. Wolves WICKED WOLF TRIATHLON: Carrbridge, Sat 23 Jul

No real wolves back in the Highlands just yet, but a couple of different events with that name and a clue as to where the moniker comes from. Testing your limits in the loveliest of locations. It begins with a 5km kayak (2km longer than last year) from the beach at Lochindorb, around the 13th century ruined castle – lair of the notorious Wolf of Badenoch. From there it’s a spectacularly scenic 30km mountain bike ride over the Lochindorb moor towards Carr-bridge – taking in amazing views of the Cairngorms – then a 10km run around the pretty woodlands of Carr-Bridge with a finale finish in the heart of the village. People can enter either as a team of three – doing one section each – or they can sign up as a solo entry. Places are limited to 55 entries so anyone who fancies taking part had better sign up sharpish. www.wickedwolftriathlon.co.uk

WILDHEARTS WOLFTREK:

Forres to Cairngorm Mountain, Sat 06 & Sun 07 Aug More lupine character building with one of our favourite events, now in its fourth year. Participants will have just 24 hours to complete a stunning 45 mile route from Forres to Cairngorm Mountain, with the added thrill of crossing the remote Dava Moor, another legendary home of the aforementioned Wolf of Badenoch, this time doing so under cover of darkness. Created by Forres based charity WildHearts, the WolfTrek route has been designed to take participants through a microcosm of Highland wilderness, packed with diverse terrain, landscapes and wildlife. Whilst the most adventurous will have the opportunity to tackle the whole 45 mile trek, the challenge has also been broken down into three, 15 mile stages, which can be tackled as a team relay effort. There is also an option to sample a “bite-sized” 17 mile version of the trek by completing the Midnight March, from Forres to the shores of ghostly Lochindorb. WildHearts provide micro-loans and business training to people living in poverty in the developing world, enabling them to work their own way out of poverty. Once one WildHearts micro-client repays their loan, that money is then lent out to another member of their community. 01309 678115 www.wildheartsinaction.org

Making The Most Of You: <<< Comfortable In Your Own (slightly darker) Skin... There’s nothing quite like a glowing, natural-looking tan to make you look and feel great. If you aren’t lucky enough to be heading somewhere sunny this summer then treat yourself to a professional fake tan for a flawless finish. There are lots of options available now - but the quickest is a spray tan which is applied in less than 15 minutes in a special booth that means your tan is dry instantly and develops in less than 8 hours. For summer 2011 the trend is about a “Hyper-Real” spray tan. This can be achieved by starting with a very natural base tan that develops with your own skin tone such as St Tropez or Sienna. Products such as a matching tan intensifier can then be layered onto the skin to provide an airbrushed look. If you fancy DIY tanning at home here are my top 10 tips to ensure your tan is perfectly gorgeous for as long as possible: 1. If you’re a fake tan addict, you need to tan detox to remove the build-up that can produce an uneven result. 2. If you’re waxing or shaving before tanning, you need to do it more than 24hrs beforehand. 3. The night before tanning use a good non oily body scrub to remove dead skin. 4. The most common cause of a patchy tan is dry skin, so it’s very important to moisturise any dry areas immediately prior to tanning. 5. Wear latex gloves or use a tan applicator mitt when applying your tan to avoid orange palms. Once you have finished mix a little self-tan with moisturiser to tan the back of your hands. 6. Make sure you don’t rub in your tanning lotion or gradual tanner. Just smooth over all areas ensuring you are well covered. 7. While your tan is developing, wear loose, dark clothes and avoid tight fitting underwear to prevent rubbing the tan off 8. Try to avoid washing your hands for at least 2 hours after you had finished. 9. After your development time has passed, rinse in the shower without using shower gel till the water runs clear and pat dry. 10. Maintain your tan by using the matching range of products for best results. The hands and face will fade quicker than the rest of the body so reapply to these areas after a few days to keep your tan looking flawless or use a gradual tan to top-up. Moisture is key to ensure your tan fades evenly so use an un-perfumed body lotion every day.

“The Imaginarium of Cookery” I MET A SAD LOBSTER A FEW YEARS AGO... I asked him whats wrong. He said “There’s no purpose in my life... I think I’ll start worshipping God as I want to be a born again crustacean”!

Lobster with Green Beans and Citrus Dressing Lobster is a valued food product; well-known recipes include Lobster Newberg and Lobster Thermidor. Lobster is best eaten fresh, and they are normally purchased live. Lobsters are usually shipped and sold with their claws banded to prevent them from injuring each other or the purchaser. Lobsters cannot open and close the claws when they are banded, which causes the claws to begin to atrophy inside the shell. Recently banded lobsters will not show this, and the claws will be full. Many restaurants that serve lobster keep a tank of the live creatures, often allowing patrons to pick their own. Lobsters are generally prepared and cooked while they are still alive, even though both claws may have been removed. Most cooks place the live lobster into a pot of boiling water or steam which kills it. Lobsters are also served fried, grilled, or baked The majority of the meat is in the tail and the two front claws, but smaller quantities can be found in the legs and torso. Lobster can be boiled or steamed, or used in a wide array of dishes and salads. It can be served as soup or bisque or mixed with mayonnaise or salad dressing for lobster rolls. Lobster meat is often dipped in clarified butter, resulting in a sweetened flavor.

John McCruden, Chapter One, Forres

INGREDIENTS: 2 small live lobster about 500g each 20g sea salt 400g fine green beans 100g watercress 100ml citrus and red pepper vinaigrette 500g grated fresh parmesan cheese 200ml white wine sauce 1 red onion finely sliced 25ml olive oil

METHOD:

First put the lobster in the freezer for about 30 minutes to make them sleepy. When ready to cook, make sure you kill them quickly: The simplest way to do this is detach the head from the body as fast as possible. Pull the claws from the body and set aside. Discard the head. Clean the body by removing the swim bladder, which is attached to the middle tail section. Put on a large pan containing at least 3 liters of water on to boil and add salt. Drop in the lobster bodies and claws and boil allowing 3 ½ minutes for the tails and up to 5 minutes for the claws. Remove and cool a little. Pull the shells from the bodies, it is best to do this while they are still warm. Crack the claws with the back of a heavy cook’s knife. Then you should be able to pull off the shell in two parts and extract the meat in one piece. Set aside. Meanwhile take a large pan of boiling water add sea salt add green beans and cook for 1 minute, refresh in cold water. In a frying pan heat olive oil and fry sliced red onion, add green beans and toss. Add white wine sauce and freshly grated parmesan cheese. Arrange in centre of serving dish. Cut the lobster tail into medallions and place on top. Drizzle with citrus and red pepper vinaigrette. Top with watercress and drizzle over more dressing.

Italy/France I 2010 I 128mins (Italian with subtitles) This breathless biopic tells the true story of notorious Milanese gangster Renato Vallanzasca, who along with best friend Enzo and their gang, the feared Banda Della Comasina, became the scourge of Milan in the 70’s and 80s. Loosely based on Vallanzasca’s own books, the film tears through his career in a flurry of bank robberies, kidnappings and prison breaks and Kim Rossi Stuart, is hugely impressive in the central role as the charismatic Vallanzasca.

Winner: Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at Berlin Film Festival 2009. Returned from duty after suffering an injury, Sgt. Will Montgomery is paired up with by-the-book veteran Captain Tony Stone. The men are tasked with the unenviable job of notifying the families of soldiers who’ve died in service. This already difficult job becomes complicated when Montgomery breaks the rules and starts a relationship with a newly widowed wife of an officer. As Will’s emotional detachment dissolves, the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.

How Good Is Good Enough? How Bad Is Too Bad? Many people, while admitting they have sinned, think that they are still good enough to go to Heaven on their own merits. Others think they have sinned so much that they are too bad to go to Heaven.

How good is good enough? Just how good does a person have to be to earn eternal life? According to God’s standard (the only standard that really counts) a person would have to live an absolutely perfect life to earn eternal life. Not one lie; not one bad thought; not one disrespectful word to their parents, etc. Perfect. Do you think you have fulfilled and maintained this strict standard? Romans 3:19 says, “...what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” You see we have all broken God’s law and the whole world stands guilty before God! No one can argue that they have lived a perfect life. No one … not you, not me, no one. We don’t like to think about it, but it’s true …we all have sinned – broken God’s law (Romans 3:10, 23). We have ALL offended a holy God, who will by no means pass by sin.

How bad is too bad? Maybe you think you have sinned so much that there is no forgiveness for you. God is Holy, but He loves to forgive. God loves you and is not willing that any should perish. He showed his love toward us in that “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). To those who turn from their sin and receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord, He assures us, “I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). . We do not have to go to that place of torment which the Lord Jesus calls hell.

So, none are without sin, but none are without hope, either. The Lord wants “all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4). A sinner in Bible times asked the question “What do I have to do to be saved?” The answer was simple, yet profound, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31). On the cross of Calvary, Jesus Christ was satisfying the just demands of God’s law against sinners - He was made sin that we might, through him, be made righteous. In order for God to no longer see us as guilty hell-deserving sinners, and fit us for heaven, we each need by faith to personally accept that Christ died in our place. God’s redeeming love for sinners is found only in Christ, and the sinner is out of Christ. Put your trust in the finished work (death, burial, and resurrection) of the Lord Jesus Christ, and God will save you by faith in His Son and give you the gift of the Holy Spirit to enable you to live for Him and know Him as your Lord.“...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Be done with your pride and bow your knee to the Lord Jesus. Only when a sinner turns from his sin and bows to Jesus as Lord and Saviour, can he have eternal life. No matter how good you think you are or how bad you think you are, the Lord saves all those who come to Him in faith. The Lord Jesus says “ him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

Reject Him no longer. Eternity in Hell is a long time to remember that you rejected Christ.

NO ONE IS SO GOOD THAT THEY DON’T NEED TO BE SAVED. NO ONE IS SO BAD THAT THEY CAN’T BE SAVED.

“The Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.” Galatians 3:22
