Celtic Knotwork & Teenage Kicks

NICK TWEDDLE @ Eden Court, Tue 01-Mon 28 Feb Nick Tweddle was a local man, raised up north near Ullapool, and had his ďŹ rst exhibition in nearly 30 years in the planning when he suddenly died a few months ago. His daughter Kate has organised an exhibition in memory of him showcasing a rare talent that draws expressly on Highland culture and ancient Celtic knotwork. With an incredible attention to detail he deftly applies oils and graphite to create intriguing organic scenes. They re marvellous paintings and the exhibition is well worth seeing. eden-court.co.uk

DUFI: TEENAGE KICKS @ Timespan, Helmsdale, until 27 Feb The modern cultural landscape of Inverness has been spiritually, and physically marked by DUFI, the collaborative brainchild of Highland based artists Al MacInnes and Fin Macrae. You can see many of their works around town (including on the back of the old Woolworths), but there s far more to what they do than just spray-painting walls. Teenage Kicks is an interactive exhibition exploring the relationship between street art, music and childhood. Growing up in locations as geographically diverse as Canada and the Highlands there was nevertheless a common bond in the importance of music to their upbringing, be it Run DMC or Runrig. There s always something engagingly bold in DUFI s work so this should be well worth heading to Helmsdale for. timespan.org.uk duďŹ -art.blogspot.com

Another likely big winner at the Oscars, with Natalie Portman already having picked up A Best Leading Actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of a troubled ballerina taking on the role of the duplicitous Swan Queen in Swan Lake, a role which parallels her real life rivalry with new dancer Lily, played by Mila Kunis. It s certainly a powerful portrayal, complete with the requisite self-harm that seems to be as necessary to modern film making as car chases were a generation earlier. Critics are divided about the authenticity of Portman s dancing and some have insisted that the movie exaggerates the rigours of a dancer s life, but it s generally agreed that Portman fully deserves the awards she s going to collect for her bravura performance in a visually sumptuous work. Director Darren Aronofsky has described it as a psychological horror movie and a trippy, sexy journey into a girl s melting mind . How can you resist?

TRUE GRIT @ Vue Cinema From 11 Feb / @ Eden Court From 25 Feb

As we go to press it s been nominated for heaps of BAFTAs and you can expect it to be in the running for a fair few Oscars come the awards ceremony on 27 Feb. Unsurprising, since it s made by Hollywood darlings the Coen brothers, whose track record, from Fargo, through The Big Lebowski to No Country for Old Men and Burn After Reading is virtually unmatched in modern American filmmaking. And, secondly, it s a remake of the classic John Wayne western, with Jeff Bridges taking on the role of Rooster Cogburn. For some bizarre reason, this entails wearing his patch on the other eye to the one preferred by Wayne. Every decade someone comes along and says that westerns aren t dead, they just smell a bit funny, trying to save the genre with a host of reinterpretations. This might succeed best of all by simply being a straight ahead homage to good old-fashioned movie making, with Bridges ably assisted by Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld.

NEDS @ Vue Cinema From 25 Feb / @ Eden Court From 01 Feb

Peter Mullan s third feature as a writer and director, after Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters, returns him to the 1970s Glasgow of his youth for a look at Non Educated Delinquents (if indeed that s where the acronym comes from. And if you think binge drinkers on top of the car park with a bottle of Buckfast and access to a Facebook account is as Neddy as behaviour gets, this is a real eyeopener. One critic described it as a bit like a reverse Fresh Prince if Carlton was high on adhesives , but it s far weightier than that and could well be the greatest portrayal yet of 1970s Scottish youth culture. A dynamic young cast and a great script too.

THE EDGE OF HEAVEN @ Eden Court, Tue 08 Feb, 7.30pm

Ali Aksu (Tuncel Kurtiz) is an elderly Turkish widower living in Germany. He takes in Yeter (Nursel Köse), a prostitute who also happens to be from his home country. Although Ali s son, Nejal (Baki Davrak), disapproves, he develops a rapport with the strong-willed Yeter. But when Ali inadvertently kills the woman in a drunken rage, Nejal travels to Istanbul in search of Yeter s estranged 27 year-old daughter, Ayten, who s part of a radical activist group and has her own problems. Seemingly unconnected lives intersect in Istanbul in this remarkable film which won Best Screenplay at Cannes in 2007. Shown as part of IFF s season dedicated to director Fatih Akin.

The Kids Are Alright...

Just when you thought that Pixar and Disney had a stranglehold on animation, here’s a chance to see it done by another giant of the industry, special effects company Industrial Light & Magic, making their first full length animated feature in 35 years. And it looks like a bit of a corker. JOHNNY DEPP voices the title character, a pet chameleon living in a terrarium and finding himself removed to an Old West town called Dirt, which is populated by various desert critters garbed like characters out of a spaghetti western. As he’s always thought himself a hero, Rango establishes himself as the lawman, strolling the streets as a sheriff-like character. Unknown to him, the “good guy” role doesn’t do very well in Dirt -- with a whole cemetery filled with good guy tombstones. But that doesn’t stop Rango from trying, constantly seeking to fit in with his surroundings, no matter how challenging. Fitting in with surroundings...chameleon...see what they’re doing there. There’s a top line-up voicing the other characters including RAY WINSTONE, BILL NIGHY, ISLA FISHER and, best of all, HARRY DEAN STANTON, plus of course, Depp himself, who managed to fit in his part in a 20 day window he had in his busy schedule. All the more remarkable since, unlike the usual way of going about these things, most of the actors’ voices were recorded simultaneously rather than being added to scenes in dribs and drabs. They even dressed up in Wild West gear to get in character. It’s directed by Gore Verbinski, better known for making the first three Pirates Of The Caribbean films and obviously a good buddy of Depp. Perhaps the Toy Story franchise has got real competition at last. RUSCHA’S ROOM @ Small Gallery, Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, until 12 Feb; and @ IG:LU, 14–19 Feb; and @ Foyer, Highland Council HQ, 21 Feb–25Mar What do you get if you mix five schools worth of creative kids with an exhibition of a pop artist who’s work spans 5 decades? Insiration, that’s what. Through a series of talks and workshops, a large number of Highland schoolgo-ers have immersed themselves in the work of American ED RUSCHA, who’s show at iMAG you will have read about in these pages. The kids have produced a prolific body of work that in turn has inspired the exhibitions unit to put together a show - but, in keeping with the whole creative process at work here, they decided to sidestep the usual format of putting the pupils actual pieces on the walls, in favour of a mixture of representing the art and its processes on t shirts and in film. Sound interesting? Well, yeah! You can find out more - and get a flavour of the art at hand - in our CENTRE PAGE PULL-OUT, which details which schools are involved, and features the results of a series of questions put to Ed Ruscha himself by the kids. Cool. The show begins its life at the Museum & Art Gallery, before making a flash appearance at the city’s newest creative space, the intimate IG:LU at 19 Church St, from whence it moves to the council’s headquarters at Glenurquhart Road...

MOIRA HARRIS & STEVE JONES @ Inverness Town House, Mon 14 Feb Want to celebrate 14 Feb in a special way? Keeping up the Inverness Lunchtime Concert Series tradition of presenting a celebration of St Valentine s Day, this year s selection of love songs will be performed by Highland based soprano Moira Harris and her partner, Inverness Opera Music Director Steve Jones. Cost: £4 / £3 / £1 children

EMMA JOHNSON & JOHN LENEHAN @ Nairn Community Centre, Thu 24 Feb In l984 Emma (pictured) won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, since when she has become one of the few clarinettists to have established an international career as a soloist. She has appeared with many leading orchestras, is in constant demand as a recitalist and chamber musician and has achieved great success on record with over twenty releases to her name. For this concert Emma will be accompanied by international pianist, John Lenehan, a prolific recording artist in his own right, both as a soloist and an accompanist. In a wide-ranging programme, she will play works by Dvorak, Rachmaninov, Copland, Bernstein, Reich and Dankworth, an enticingly broad choice of material which should showcase her versatility. 01667 453476 musicnairn.org.uk

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 09 Feb Celebrating British composers, incorporating work from the Ensemble s existing repertoire and moving forward with the world première of Joe Cutler s New Work for solo violin, ensemble and electronics. Cutler s work is the latest in a series of projects which have evolved from the Ensemble s initial exploration of the electronic sound world during the IRCAM residency in Glasgow.

KUNGSBACKA PIANO TRIO @ Inverness Town House, Wed 16 Feb Once again Inverness Chamber Music is delighted to present this popular Anglo-Swedish trio playing works by Faure and Schumann as well as the magnificent Archduke Trio by Beethoven.

CLUBBING

The late, great John Peel called Dave Clarke The Baron Of Techno, recognising just what a towering figure in the genre he is. Back in 2000 he was the first techno artist to release an internet-only single and he was an early adopter of all sorts of digital wizardry. Clarke was born and raised in Brighton and often expelled from school, he has admitted to being a disruptive boy with a short attention span caused by an insecure home life. What started him on the road to being a DJ was combining his father’s love of technology with his mother’s disco-soul records, tunes by the likes of Roy Ayers and The Crusaders. “My dad had disco lights in the front room,” Clarke has said. “Record decks, reel-to-reels, reverb units, he even did a thing on BBC Radio about quadrophonics. It’s pretty obvious where I get it all from really.” Retreating to his attic room he made tapes for friends, dismantled electronic equipment, and subsisted on a musical diet of Visage, early hip hop, Pigbag and punk. When his parents split, he ran away from home, sleeping rough in car-parks before a friend offered him floor-space. The only thing that kept him going was music. From soul to the Psychedelic Furs, from Devo to the nascent Chicago house sound, Clarke devoured it all voraciously and blagged himself a DJ slot, followed by the groundbreaking “Red” EPs which brought him to public attention. Briefly signed to Skint (as is pretty much obligatory for anyone living in the Brighton area), he’s more recently cemented his far-sighted reputation with his own White Noise radio show in Amsterdam, (where he lives) and his record label of the same name which has released stuff not only by Clarke himself, but also the likes of Frank Kusserov, Noirdegout, Woody McBride, Marco Bernadi, Terence Fixmer and The Hacker. To see him DJ is to witness an enthusiasm and energy that few other can match, making this Robotone show unmissable. ironworksvenue.com

NOISEBOX presents MARK EG @ The Vault, Aviemore, Fri 25 Feb Another fine techno DJ, widely acclaimed for his intense stage presence, as well as his outrageous antics behind the decks, spanning several different musical scenes and movements. His most notable achievements have included his massive popularity in the Serbian/Bosnian and Croatian techno scene, the near sonic domination of the Canadian rave scene and his almost cult-like status within the UK hard trance and hardstyle movements where he has been a well respected part of the scene for the last fifteen years - playing regularly at events such as Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Hardcore Heaven and Slammin Vinyl. facebook.com/vault.vaultaviemore

NEW SOUL CITY @ Maple Court Hotel, Inverness, Sat 12 Feb NSC has returned to its spiritual home at Maple Court with its always excellent selection of funky tunes and great atmosphere. And some of the finest posters you’re ever likely to see. Keep the fire burning and get along.

LATE NEWS: 2 MANY DJS @ Ironworks, Sat 19 Feb Everybody’s favourite Belgians (barring Jens Bogaerts, our favourite 22 yr old photographer on Instagram) hailing from the picturesque city of Ghent, RockNess perennials, and with their 2002 album As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt2, pretty much inventors of the mash-up. They are extraordinarily talented and loved and this will sell out if it hasn’t already. ironworksvenue.com

MUSIC

22

You’d be forgiven for not having heard of Emily Smith, such is the plethora these days of folk singers, but to aficionados of the genre (who don’t think the world begins and ends with Mumford and Sons), she’s one of the very best. She’s most often compared with Joni Mitchell, but other people like Richard Thompson, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Eddi Reader often get cited with some justification. Hopefully though, with the release of her fourth album, the curiously spelt Traiveller’s Joy, she’ll finally have the Johnny-and-Jenny-come-lately compared to her rather than the other way round. At seven she started on piano, moved onto snare drum in the local pipe band and subsequently found a passion for piano accordion, where at the age of eighteen she was National Mod champion. But it wasn’t until a solo with the school choir in her late teens that she discovered her singing voice. After winning BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Music of the Year Award in 2002 she met New Zealand born multi-instrumentalist Jamie McClennan who has been an integral part of her sound ever since. Combining traditional Scottish songs with her own creations proved a success, demonstrated when her song ‘Edward of Morton’ won the Folk Category of the USA Songwriting Competition in 2005. In 2009 Emily and Jamie released a duo album titled ‘Adoon Winding Nith’ to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Rabbie Burns, who at one time lived only a few miles from where Emily grew up. And now comes “Traiveller’s Joy” incorporating traditional material sourced from the travelling people of Scotland. She’s good. www.eden-court.co.uk

FOLLIES @ Bogbain, Sun 13 Feb

AMERICANA/COUNTRY/FOLK

In the past twelve months, Bogbain has hosted some very fine gigs indeed, the most recent being Phantom Band, where even Tilda Swinton was spotted. Perhaps Rod Stewart might drop in to this one, since he’s described Follies as “sensational”. The trio boast the vocals of Amy Belle, Raymond Hackland and Alan Frew, who came together from varied backgrounds. Raymond is an ex-pat Scot who moved to Amsterdam and ended up with a Dutch No.1, Amy Belle went from busking on the streets of Glasgow to the dizzy heights of performing with the aforementioned Rod and being covered by none other than Miley Cyrus., while the master musicianship of Ayrshire’s Alan Frew completes the trio. They’re soon off on a mammoth European tour, so here’s your chance to see them before they fly away. www.bogbainfarm.com

EDWINA HAYES @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 19 Feb Singer songwriter who seems to spend most of her life on the road, supporting the likes of Van Morrison and Nanci Griffith and building up her own increasingly dedicated fanbase. She was last at Eden Court a couple of years back and those who saw her were blown away. We’re expecting more of the same.

DAVID FERRARD, KIM EDGAR & YVONNE LYON @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 27 Feb

LEDDRA CHAPMAN & BEN MONTAGUE @ Ironworks Room 2, Tue 01 Mar A chance for those who haven’t yet experienced it, to check out the upstairs room at Ironworks, a great little room that provides a more intimate atmosphere than the main hall. There’s even more potential in the space for it to be shaped into just the kind of up-close, relaxed room that Inverness needs and some innovative bookings are beginning to take it there. Like these two young songwriters who you’ll be hearing lots more about in the months ahead. www.ironworksvenue.com

MUSIC

Three of Scotland’s most engaging young songwriters who fuse memorable melodies, compelling storytelling and strong harmonies. Should be good.

JAMES GRANT @ Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 03 Mar Ex Love and Money frontman who’s got plenty of critical acclaim for ensuing solo albums and heartrending acoustic material. He might even treat you to some of the old stuff too.

RICHARD WOOD @ Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 10 Feb

One of the most accomplished and entertaining fiddlers around, Wood is back after a break of a mere ten years and apparently just as impressive as ever. Accompanied by fellow Canadian Gordon Belsher, he’ll be delivering top notch jigs, reels and Strathspeys along with his own compositions. www.edencourt.co.uk

THE DANGLEBERRIES @ Ironworks, Sat 19 Feb

Disillusioned with the old style pipe band network, The Dangleberries decided to incorporate rock guitars and unashamed boisterousness to create a blueprint that’s spawned a whole load of guitar’n’bagpipe combos. To many, these are still the best and it should be quite a night. www.ironworksvenue.com

BOTHY BALLADS- CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS @ Elgin Town Hall, Sat 05 Feb

Bothy ballads are unique to the North East of Scotland, traditionally sung by farm labourers entertaining each other while sleeping in outbuildings. They’re passed down from generation to generation and stretch back hundreds of years, important enough to the development of folk music in its purest sense that noted archivist Alan Lomax even got a man called Davie Stewart to sing one of them “The Laird o Dainty Doonby” when undertaking his priceless field recordings in 1951. Songs range from the tender to politically stirring, often incorporating not just romantic longing, but also frankly eyebrow-raising boasts about the virility of ploughmen. A rich tradition indeed then and the new champ will have quite a history to live up to. Tickets are available from Elgin Library, Cooper Park.

COCA TENORIO @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 03 Mar @ Eden Court, Sat 05 Mar Ecuadorean singer/songwriter Coca Tenorio, currently living in Inverness is touring her debut album “Todo Transito” (reviewed very favourably here a couple of months back), a lovely record combining the sounds of her Afro-Latin heritage with soulful Andean influences. Live, she’s accompanied by a fantastic line-up of highly respected musicians from South America, the Caribbean, and Scotland: Javier Fioramonti [Argentina] Camilo Menjura [Colombia], Jesus Cutino [Cuba], Ricardo Pompa [Cuba], Simon Gall [Scotland] and Wilmer Sifontes [Venezuela]. They’re an exceptional bunch in their own right having worked and toured with likes of Henry Fiol, Omar Puente and groups such as Salsa Celtica, Ska Cubano and Voices of Nature. Coca and her band will also be performing a collection of Latin American standards and there will be plenty of opportunity for dance lovers to take to floor. www.myspace.com/cocatenorio

SAMBA SENE @ Cromarty Old Brewery, Sat 05 Feb The Old Brewery regularly puts on shows that you’re not likely to see anywhere else, it’s far-sightedness invariably rewarding. And this looks like being no exception. Samba Sene was born in Senegal but moved to Scotland ten years ago and sings in French, English and Wolof. Influenced by everything from, jazz and Latino rhythms to the music of his native Senegal, he follows in a rich tradition of artists like Baaba Maal (with whom he studied), Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita and more, but is equally open to the influences of people as diverse as Paul Simon, Van Morrison and Aswad. He is a charismatic singer, with a broad appeal, from serious world music fans to audiences who just want to dance to the beats. Recent guest performances include singing with Baaba Maal’s band at Celtic Connections, with American Hammond organ ace Tony Monaco, and sessions on MaryAnn Kennedy’s Global Gathering, so this is a great opportunity to catch someone who’s very much in demand. SCOOTY & THE SKYHOOKS @ Ironworks, Sat 12 Feb There’s hope for wedding party bands everywhere. Instant partying guaranteed. www.ironworksvenue.com

The musical cruise of a life time, with the ultimate dream team ship’s band. Featuring Hot, Hot Horns from Orkestra Del Sol and voluptuous vocals from the Bevvy Sisters. This 12-piece spectacular presents a connoisseur’s choice of classic swing and vintage rarities for your dance floor delectation, having honed their skills for over a decade having been born out of Edinburgh’s Bongo Club. We’re promised “an unforgettable night of first-class glamour and sophistication matched with steerage-style relish for a party.” Sounds good.

SOLID SILVER 60S SHOW @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 24 Feb, 5.15/8.30pm Eden Court regularly brings bands from the sixties to town and it’s easy to see the shows as mere exercises in nostalgia, but at the heart they’re the last link we have with a golden age of British (and visiting American) pop, when bands would cram into charabancs and drive the length and breadth of the country to play shows every night and sometimes, like here, two in one day. The Beatles did it, The Stones did it, Motown and Stax did it and, indeed, these very performers did too, perhaps playing at the iconic Northern Meeting Rooms. The Solid Silver 60s Show is now in its 26th year, proving to the young whippersnappers that you can’t rely on the odd NME cover and Brits hype for an enduring career. This one features Chris Farlowe (pic: top right), Dave Berry (pic: bottom right), Wayne Fontana (pic: middle right), Terry Sylvester from The Hollies and special guests The Merseybeats. The music they made fifty-odd years ago is still the bedrock of everything you listen to now. And respect is very much due. www.eden-court.co.uk

REEL BIG FISH @ Ironworks, Mon 21 Feb (Above) MUSIC

Excellent Californian ska-punk combo who should appeal to fans of Mighty Mighty Bosstones and their ilk. We’re particularly taken by the fact that they once released a record called “Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album”, covered A-Ha’s “Take On Me” and orchestrated a campaign to stop fans buying their own Greatest Hits album. Crazy name, crazy guys.

THE DYKEENIES @ Ironworks, Fri 18 Feb For five years now, The Dykeenies have been one of those Scottish bands who seem constantly on the verge of breaking through to bigger things, their spiky pop delivered with far more verve than many of their peers who have since hit commercial paydirt. Still, it’s not too late for the Cumbernauld four piece and new tracks posted on their myspace site (www.myspace.com/gofindthedykeenies) suggest they’ve got plenty of treats ready to unveil. It’s good to have them back.

JAPANESE VOYEURS @ Mad Hatters, Mon 07 Feb Is it time for a grunge revival? Japanese Voyeurs certainly seem to think so and make some very good arguments for relocating the genre in the 21st century. Should be a pretty marvellous show. In the meantime, we asked the band to tell us what they’ve been listening to. Searching With My Good Eye Closed - Soundgarden “It’s got this awesome scream at the beginning and Kim Thayil writes the best riffs.”

Deliverance - Opeth “Best outro we’ve heard for ages.”

ROCK

A mini Scottish tour from the Biffyesque Glaswegians means that Dingwall gets to experience its most notable gig in years. Fresh from supporting My Chemical Romance and leading up to the release of their forthcoming album “Free” (that’s the title, not the payment arrangement), they’ll be looking to consolidate an enormously successful past twelve months. And if things go according to plan you can be sure you won’t get a chance to see them in a place this size for a long time to come.

MUSIC

TWIN ATLANTIC @ Oscars, Dingwall, Thu 17 Feb

STANLEY ODD @ Hootananny, Fri 18 Feb If their press release is to be believed, Stanley Odd are writing about the sort of things that Chaucer would were he alive today. That’s perhaps rather overegging the situation, but we may yet be proved wrong. What is clear is that this Edinburgh five piece’s take on that hippety-hoppety lark is rather more original than most, investing proceedings with a bit of rifftastic business. Their new EP Pure Antihero Material has been well received and we expect them to be doing the business on the festival circuit come summer, so this is a good time to catch ‘em.

FEDERATION OF THE DISCO PIMP @ Mad Hatters, Sat 19 Feb Radio soulster Craig Charles reckons this lot make the most aggressive jazz/funk he’s heard in years, which is actually a compliment. The seven piece from Glasgow have been together for five years and regularly kick up a storm on the soul scene with appearances at the likes of the legendary Soul Train night.

PENGUINS KILL POLAR BEARS @ Mad Hatters, Thu 24 Feb Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut EP Dawn in June 2010, the band have been busy building their profile supporting the likes of The Twilight Sad, Errors, The Xcerts and Nine Black Alps. And there’s a growing fanbase for their music which draws on influences like Biffy and Smashing Pumpkins.

ALABAMA 3 ACOUSTIC AND UNPLUGGED @ Ironworks, Fri 04 Mar Always popular when they play up here and usually at the heart of some kind of hedonistic behaviour, which has to be applauded. Bringing the frontier spirit of South London to the Highlands, they’re guaranteed to give you a good time, proving that there’s far more to them than just “that Sopranos song”. It’ll be interesting to see how they work in this acoustic and unplugged format and we’re expecting something pretty fine indeed.

Stephen Venables, mountaineer, writer, broadcaster and public speaker, was the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen. a thrilling highlight in a career which has taken Stephen right through the Himalaya, from Afghanistan to Tibet, making first ascents of many previously unknown mountains. His adventures have also taken him to the Rockies, the Andes, the Antarctic island South Georgia, East Africa, South Africa and of course the European Alps, where he has climbed and skied for over forty years. In the last ten years he has twice repeated Sir Ernest Shackleton s famous crossing of South Georgia. One of the great epics of exploration, Shackleton s treacherous expedition to cross Antarctica via the South Pole is a tale of escape and survival more miraculous than any fiction.

ALASTAIR HUMPHREYS: ROUND THE WORLD BY BIKE @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 19 Feb

Aged 24, Alastair Humphreys left England to cycle round the world. His journey along the length of the Earth s three great landmasses (Africa, the Americas, Eurasia) took more than four years to complete and was called the first great adventure of the 21st century by none other than Sir Ralph Fiennes. He has written three books about the adventure and made a name for himself as a motivational speaker, with an irresistible enthusiasm for new experiences. A case in point is his undertaking of Credit Crunch expeditions , microadventures like walking the M25, Sea kayaking in Pembrokeshire and even going for an Afghan meal in West London all of which are documented in his excellent blog at www.alastairhumphreys.com You do not need to fly to the other side of the planet to do an expedition, he says. You do not need to be an elite athlete, expertly trained, or rich to have an adventure. Adventure is only a state of mind. That said, he still has some bigger ambitions, including crossing the Arctic Ocean, via the North Pole by dog sled, paddling the length of the Congo River, walking to the four corners of the USA, but with enough money to eat in restaurants a lot and even being the first man on mars. You wouldn t put any of it past him.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

FOOD ON FILM @ Hall Of The Roses, Kingussie Tue 03- Sat 06 Feb

SPECIALS

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 Mar and this year marks its hundredth anniversary, thousands of events being held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women’s craft markets, theatre performances, fashion parades and more. Events up here, not just on the day itself, but in the weeks leading up to it are being coordinated in partnership with several other organisations by the Women@Work Project (W@W), organised by the Workers’ Educational Association in Inverness. It’s a network providing information and training for women in nine local areas of northern Scotland, encouraging them to learn together, to develop skills and to speak out about what matters to them at home, at work and in communities. They will be fundraising for the Linda Norgrove Foundation at the events, to honour the life of the young woman Aid Worker from the Isle of Lewis who tragically lost her life in Afghanistan whilst supporting impoverished women and communities in that war-torn country. Highlights include film screenings at Eden Court, an exhibition of banners at the museum and much more. More info at www.weawomenatwork.org.uk

Now in its fourth year this is an innovative community festival aiming to celebrate and explore the world of food, gathering people of all ages in the community to enjoy food and films together in the winter, and providing opportunities for young people to develop new skills. Highlights of this year’s festival include a “Food Art Exhibition” with a free screening of The End of the Line (a documentary about the fishing industry), Oscar Night with a Youth Award when students from High Schools across the Highlands will show their short food films to a panel of film industry judges who will comment and award prizes - followed by a screening of Food Inc and premieres of two short locally made food films Butterfingers and Fishy Business. They’ll also be unveiling “the world’s smallest cinema, in a chair cupboard, with 6 seats and a wide screen TV - and a few hours of indie documentaries for film buffs”. The festival’s biggest coup is a charity preview a still to be released great new British feature film “No Ordinary Trifle” - starring Dougray Scott and Claire Forlani - plus Gordon Ramsay! And to end the weekend, a cosy screening of “Babette’s Feast” with cheese and wine, sofas and a roaring fire. For a full programme go to www. kingussiefoodonfilm.co.uk

Rus cha’ Roo s m Seòmraichean Luchd-ealain Inverness Museum & Art Gallery 15th January – 12th February 2011 ‘Ruscha’s Room’ is a collection of innovative artworks produced by creative young minds in the Highlands in response to an exhibition of the work of one of America’s greatest living artists which was on show at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery in autumn 2010. The exhibition was ‘ED RUSCHA – Major Works from 4 Decades’* and is one of the ARTIST ROOMS jointly owned and managed by National Galleries of Scotland and Tate on behalf of the nation. In response to the exhibition pupils from FORTROSE, KILCHUIMEN, MILLBURN, ALNESS & INVERGORDON Academies attended a series of talks and workshops with BRIAN MACBEATH, GRAEME ROGER and DUNCAN MARSHALL, exploring Ruscha’s unconventional methods - which combine typography with commonplace objects - creating text-based art in the form of collages and animated films, many of which appear in this publication. As part of the project the pupils emailed questions to Ed Ruscha in L.A. and his intriguing responses are included here. The young people are now having an unmissable exhibition of their work entitled ‘RUSCHA’S ROOM’ at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery until 12th February. (*ED RUSCHA – Major Works from Four Decades is currently showing at the Swanson Gallery, Thurso until 26th February)

Ed Ruscha: Born in 1937 in America’s Midwest, Ed Ruscha grew up in Oklahoma City. In 1956, aged 18, he set out for California, driving 1,500 miles west on the legendary Route 66. Arriving in Los Angeles, he enrolled at the Chouinard Art Institute, a Disney-sponsored art school where he studied fine art alongside typesetting and graphic design. From works that feature single onomatopoeic words and declamatory phrases, to signature images such as the gas station, Ruscha began to make paintings that were premeditated and planned, in which text and imagery from everyday life converged. By the early 1960s he was perceived to have created a new form of visual landscape.

Over the past half-century, Ruscha’s art has evolved in unpredictable ways but the things that first fired his imagination – cinema and film; driving; roadside signs; the flat, featureless landscapes of the American West; the city, filled with constant visual noise; the phenomenon of human communication and the pleasures of typography – remain the basis for his art.

(‘ED RUSCHA – Major Works from Four Decades’ is currently showing at the Swanson Gallery, Thurso until 26th February and Timespan, Helmsdale 5th March – 16th April) For further information about the exhibition please contact Cathy Shankland, Exhibitions Officer, Cathy.Shankland@highland.gov.uk Tel. 01463 710978 For further information about Education programme please contact Lynn Johnson, Arts Links Officer, Lynn.Johnson@highland.gov.uk Tel. 01463 239841 ED RUSCHA images from top, L–R: ‘Standard Study #3’ ‘SMELLS LIKE BACK OF OLD HOT RADIO’

GLEN AFFRIC WINTER WALKING FESTIVAL @ Glen Affric Fri 18 > Mon 21 Feb

While soft Southerners might be complaining about all those mysterious white flakes falling from the sky, the return of properly snowy winters in the last couple of years has only served to emphasise the magnificence of the Highland landscape. And it s not just the skiing attracting visitors in record breaking numbers, there s also plenty of good walking to be had as this festival celebrates. WinterFest 2011 is all about just getting out there and giving it a go. Not only will you be able to join guided high and medium level walks, whilst brushing up on those essential winter skills, but you ll also be able to try a snow-hole experience or to strap on webbed feet and have a blast snow-shoeing. There are also sessions on kit advice and plenty of après-walk activities, with quizzes, food and drink. Find out more and register at www.winter-fest.co.uk

ORIENTEERING @ Darnaway, Sun 13 Feb

There s a concerted attempt to bring the World Orienteering Championship to the Highlands in the next few years so it s a sport that s bound to get even more popular. The local Moravian Orienteering Club are already spreading the word about how much fun it can be and organise regular events, the next being in Darnaway on 13 Feb. It s a full scale national ranking colour coded event apparently. There ll be compasses and boots involved, that s for sure. More info at www.moravianorienteering.org The tragic death of Jimmy Girvan last September during one of the stages of the Scottish Rally Championship shows just how dangerous the sport can be, but it s also one of the most thrilling around both for participants and spectators. The first round of the 2011 Championship is the ever popular Snowman rally with well over 100 cars taking part on a five stage course stretching over 40 miles. Living up to its name there was plenty of snow on the course last year making for particularly spectacular action through the scenic forest roads. This year is expected to be just as impressive, kicking off the season in style. More details at www.highlandcarclub.co.uk

SCOTTISH RUGBY @ Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Fri 25 Feb

Following the highly successful hosting by ICT of last year s Scotland under-20 fixture against France, Scottish Rugby are bringing the team back to Inverness for another 6 Nations clash. The under-20s second home game of the championship, against Ireland, will be played at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, giving supporters from across the north the opportunity to watch a host of rising stars in the flesh. Best of all, in common with all other home Scotland A, under-20, club international, under-18, under-17 and Scotland Women games this season, admission to the match will be free. Peter Wright, the Scotland under-20 head coach, says, The under-20s is a great vehicle for exposing guys to quality rugby and helping them develop good habits. I was forwards coach with the team when we went to Inverness last season and it was a really positive occasion. The fans turned out in force, gave us great backing, and showed the passion that exists for the game in the north. I d encourage as many people as possible to come along for the Ireland match next month. It will be another top night of rugby and a chance for people to see some of our best young talent in action. www.scottishrugby.org

COMEDY PHIL COOL: A COMEDY LEGEND @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 06 Feb Back in the eighties Phil Cool had the kind of omnipresent TV profile currently held by the likes of Jon Culshaw, with his weekly impression show pulling in record numbers. All this due not particularly to the quality of the material, but his extraordinarily flexible face which does indeed appear to be made of rubber. With a capacity to be instantly believable as both George Bush and Bugs Bunny, often within the blink of an eye, his live shows were some of the first to sell in truckloads on DVD (or to be more precise, the then dominant format of VHS-ask your parents). Coming onto the scene at the same time as the first boom of alternative comedy, he managed to straddle both the energy of that culture and more traditional comedy mores, guaranteeing a cross-generational appeal. The self-proclaimed comedy legend status isn t without foundation then and, after a decade out of the spotlight it ll be interesting to see what fans old and new make of that amazing face. eden-court.co.uk

RAYMOND MEARNS @ Craigmonie Centre, Drumnadrochit, Fri 18 Feb Not to be confused with man o the wild Ray Mears, though this comedian isn t averse to a little savagery in his material. He s had plenty of opportunities to hone his talents as a regular performer and compere at shows across the country and you might even have caught him on TV in things like Legit, Rab C Nesbitt and the mighty Limmy s Show. Along the way he s even found time to appear in well regarded Ken Loach films like Ae Fond Kiss and It s A Free World. Grumpy, lugubrious and possessed of a fine capacity for swearing like billyo, he s well worth checking out. craigmoniecentre.co.uk booklochness.com

Strange how Canada has such a strong comedic tradition. Not only the hugely influential Montreal Comedy festival, but also the likes of Rich Little, Howie Mandell, Rick Miller, the Kids In The Hall crew and, more recently Craig Campbell and Tom Stade. Campbell s coming to Ironworks next month but, before that there s the chance to see Stade who, like Campbell has benefitted from a close connection with Frankie Boyle, a man who seems to be setting himself up as a patron for itinerant Canucks. As a co-writer on the hit-and-miss Tramadol Nights TV show, he s obviously unafraid of coming out with stuff that s close to the bone so don t go if you re easily offended. If however you want to witness a real talent at the top of his game, this one s unmissable. ironworksvenue.com

Brendan Cole won the first series when partnering newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky and has since teamed up with the likes of Kelly Brook, Lisa Snowden and Jo Wood, giving him a profile a world away from when he first took up dancing as a six year old in his native New Zealand. For this tour he’s joined by a fourteen piece band with two singers and will be accompanied by former Strictly professionals Nicole Cutler, Andrew Cuerden, Hanna Haarala, Izabela Hanna and Brendan’s brother Scott Cole. SPIRIT OF THE DANCE @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 08-Sat 12 Feb Rivalling Riverdance as the most popular show to come out of Ireland, “Spirit...” has been picking up awards all over the place and expanded to the extent that there are now ten separate troupes performing around the world with four permanently based in the States. More than 25 million people have seen the world champion dancers from the Irish International Dance Company combining traditional Irish dance with the Latino rhythms of flamenco and salsa, complete with dazzling costumes and extraordinary choreography. The Rambert Dance Company is arguably the most prestigious around, a dynamic force at the heart of British dance for many years now. And it can always be relied upon to stage innovative productions, Awakenings being no exception. A theatrical rollercoaster of emotions, Awakenings is based upon true life stories and inspired by Dr Oliver Sacks’ book of the same name, made famous by the 1990 Hollywood film. In 1918 a mysterious sleeping-sickness epidemic swept across the world leaving hundreds of survivors in an unexplained paralysis. This moving new work is inspired by the powerful true stories of a group of very individual patients, catapulted temporarily but dramatically from their long slumber into their own emotionally-charged awakenings. Featuring a specially-commissioned score, both passionate and lyrical, the Rambert dancers and orchestra draw you into this dramatic and spine tingling new work. Two further dance works, brand new to Inverness audiences, will also be performed, including Hush by renowned British choreographer Christopher Bruce, and Itzik Galili’s sensational samba-inspired A Linha Curva. www.eden-court.co.uk www.rambert.org.uk/awakenings

ica • www.whatsoninverness.com THE STRANGE UNDOING OF PRUDENCIA HART @ The Ceilidh Place, Ullapool, Fri 25 & Sat 26 Feb The National Theatre of Scotland continues its mission to not only present ground breaking work, but also take it to all corners of the country. The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs, howfs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. So now is the time to enjoy a long winter evening and share a lock in with the NTS’ company of actors and musicians and indulge in an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service. Director Wils Wilson says, “The Scottish Borders are the borders between the everyday world and other worlds – so that on occasions the supernatural creeps in. It is a place where cultures mix and collide, people fall in love across boundaries and new and interesting music, stories, culture are created. It is a dangerous place, but also a place of extraordinary potential, excitement and beauty.” David Greig’s story concerns 28-year-old Prudencia Hart, a collector of folk songs, an academic, who has devoted her life to the study of folk material. She comes to town to research her thesis and gets caught up in a lock in with a bunch of locals. That’s when she hears of the existence of a song beyond song… the original song… the uncollected song… the song of undoing, and sets out to find it. What Prudencia doesn’t know is that the song of undoing belongs to the devil. It’s based on a “110% true” story told by an auld fella to Greig and Wilson apparently. Yikes! And the spookiness factor is ramped up by the warning that “The National Theatre of Scotland cannot be held responsible in the event of any members of the audience losing their heart, their shoes, their head or their very self during the course of the performance.” Sounds intriguing. DRAMA

SINGIN’ I’M NO A BILLY HE’S A TIM @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 05 Feb Since sectarianism remains one of the few aspects of Scottish football performed with enough vigour to make us truly world leaders, Des Dillon’s play is more relevant than ever. Back at Eden Court for the third time and performed on the stage of the Empire, it’s a marvellous tale of two opposing Old Firm fans banged up in a cell together on the day of the match. It’s already picking up awards for NLP Theatre, the company behind it and looks set to become a fixture in the Scottish dramatic canon.

AGAINST THE ODDS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 18 Feb

THEATRE

There can’t be many plays inspired by a breakfast cereal, but such is the case with Jade Blue’s onewoman show. The idea of Weetabix’s choose-your-own-adventure story-books (together with a paragraph from The Brooklyn Follies by ace American novelist Paul Auster) set in motion this interactive piece where the narrative is decided by the audience randomly choosing cards. Flora introduces the four people who matter the most to her, and then deals out playing cards and asks an audience member to shout stop at a random point – whichever suit that card is corresponds to one of the four people, and means she will tell their story next. It’s a finely restrained story about a mentally disturbed young woman who’s also a mathematical genius; sectioned in a mental health unit, she tells us the stories of the various people in her life. There’s an extraordinary detachment by Flora from the tales she tells of suicides and other apparently equally bleak material, but those who’ve seen the show say it’s ultimately uplifting rather than depressing. Certainly a bold and unusual piece of theatre and well worth checking out. eden-court.co.uk

A NIGHT OF DIRTY DANCING @ Ironworks, Fri 04 Feb When it was first released back in 1987, surely no one could have thought that Dirty Dancing would still be so popular almost a quarter of a century later. CALL MR ROBESON: A LIFE WITH SONGS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 05 Feb Although possessed of a gloriously rich, deep voice, heard to best effect on the mighty Ol Man River, Paul Robeson was perhaps even more famous (or infamous) as a pioneering civil rights campaigner. A true American hero he was, not entirely unexpectedly, relentlessly persecuted by the US government and even disowned by some leaders of the civil rights movement itself, branded a traitor and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Thankfully, having been all but erased from US cultural history, he s being reintroduced to the public by the likes of Tayo Aluko, whose show (with piano accompaniment from Michael Conliffe) traces Robeson s story, featuring speeches and including a defiant testimony to the Senate House of Un-American Activities Committee, as well as those glorious songs. There ll also be a post-show Q&A with members of the company so you can find out more about the man himself. Don t miss it. eden-court.co.uk cmr.tayoalukoandfriends.com

1EATING OUT:

The Review: GATHERING PLACE 87 ACADEMY ST INVERNESS 01463 713244 The holiday season might seem a thing of the past, just a receding memory of festive excess, frazzled senses and the Doctor Who Xmas Special, but in fact for a sizable proportion of the world’s population the celebrations are only just about to begin. Because, on 03 Feb it’s Chinese New Year. The last one was the Year of The Tiger, whereas this time round it’s the Year of The Rabbit. That might sound like the subtitle for a new Wallace And Gromit adventure or even something a little saucy (we’re saying no more), but it’s actually the start of twelve months where you’ll be dispensing with any tigerish qualities and instead embracing the virtues of the bunny. Which are? Well, apparently, according to one source, “good taste and refinement will shine on everything and people will acknowledge that persuasion is

better than force. A congenial time in which diplomacy, international relations and politics will be given a front seat again. We will act with discretion and make reasonable concessions without too much difficulty.” All sounds tickety-boo, but the same source does add that “law and order will be lax; rules and regulations will not be rigidly enforced. No one seems very inclined to bother with these unpleasant realities. They are busy enjoying themselves, entertaining others or simply taking it easy. The scene is quiet and calm, even deteriorating to the point of somnolence. We will all have a tendency to put off disagreeable tasks as long as possible”. So diplomacy and laziness it is then. And we’ll put those shelves up another day. And just in case you aren’t convinced that the Chinese New Year is a whole lot better than “our” version, here’s a final Oriental observation on proceedings. “When a Westerner gazes at the Moon, he may joke

that it is a ball of cheese or tell a child the story of the Man in the Moon. When a Chinese looks at the Moon, he sees the Moon Hare standing near a rock under a Cassia tree and holding the Elixir of Immortality in his hands.” Throw back your curtains tonight and have a gander at the sky. Cassia tree right? Just there. Got it. So, filled with the spirit of forthcoming rabbit times and practising how to say “Gung Hay Fat Choy”( the traditional Happy New Year greeting), we headed down to Gathering Place on Academy Street, a Chinese & Vietnamese restaurant with a name that perfectly encapsulates the cultural importance of sitting down to eat together. Unfortunately, we chose to go at lunchtime midweek, shortly after the skies had unloaded several hundredweight of snow, so it wasn’t entirely surprising that we found ourselves the only diners. Or that the place was absolutely freezing. Nevertheless, we conjured up a gaggle of

55

imaginary friends in our heads (some of whom, we have to admit, were a bit odd) and sat down to try out what immediately looked like a rather nice menu. The place is under new management and with its swish, modern decor and extensive menu is obviously trying to attract a clientele who want something a little bit special when they go out for a Chinese. Places like Jimmy Chungs are all very well if your primary reason for going is food-as-fuel-and-lotsof-it, but no matter how good your intentions are when you go there it’s hard not to just pile your plate high and end up with a mish mash of flavours and textures. Which tends to negate all the hard work that’s gone into giving each dish individuality in the first place. It’s always a little dispiriting to see the “European Dishes” section of a menu. Surely

56

if you go out for a Chinese meal, you have to be some kind of numpty to think, even for a moment, “I really hope they’ve got Fried Sausages, Fried Beef Burger or a Ham Omelette”. If you are that idiot, you’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief that, yes, they will be able to provide you with such dishes. While, we hope, slapping their foreheads in the kitchen with disbelief. There’s also the offer of the ever-present Chicken Maryland, served here with tomato and a banana fritter. If you’re brave enough to tackle that combination on one plate, why not push the boat out and actually try Chinese food? Presumably in Maryland there’s a chicken shack where they offer something as a Nothing They’d Ever Eat In Europe alternative. Because we were not only dealing with telling our imaginary friends to quieten down, but

also wondering how to methodeat the journey between being Tigers and Rabbits, we decided to go for the Set Meal meal at £16.99 each. Sharp intakes of breath obviously from those of you who’ll gladly pay a third of that three times a week for a fast food meal or coffee and Danish, neither of which you’d remember thirty seconds after you’d pitched them down your gullet. Get some perspective, people. For starters we had the Mixed Platter, necessitating one of those dinky tabletop heaters. Presented beautifully, it wasn’t about to start championing quantity over quality thank goodness, meaning that every single element, while small, was cooked with real skill. Spare Ribs, always a benchmark of quality, are by far the best in town, succulent and tasty without having to depend on the sickly

sweet gunge that often attempts to cover up myriad deficiencies. These were very good indeed. Mighty fine too was the Chicken Satay. You see it on a menu and trawl through a lifetime of dry meat and sauce straight out of a jar, but this was a top notch example of just how to skewer chicken and make it taste nice. Relieved that my dining partner was a pescitarian, the two moist pieces were mine, all mine. And there could possibly have been fisticuffs had things been otherwise. But even for a non meat eater, the Mixed Platter still had some delights to offer. Reaching for the Spring Rolls and Samosas, my companion polished them off in double-quick time, pronouncing both to be “gorgeous”. Or, to be more specific “gmmfrrgmms.” Only the sweet chilli sauce as an accompaniment bore any trace of gloopiness, but since that’s it’s raison d’être, it ticked another box. Knowing that there was still more food to come it was with slight trepidation that I worked my way through the platter’s final element, Crispy Deep-Fried Chicken Strips With Chilli, but they proved subtly moreish. Some starter. Perhaps it was the cold or,

more likely, that it’s indeed God’s chosen condiment, but we both made for chilli-related dishes as our mains, from an extensive selection. The friendly waiter offered to freestyle a dish for my non meat eating companion, but he (my companion, not the waiter), decided to go for Kung Po King Prawn, a well-received version of the classic seafood/ cashew nut/chilli combo. Nuts being the Devil’s work I refuse to pass judgement, but apparently it tasted ace as the empty plate moments later testified. It was chillis for me too, this time with Char Shiu Pork and Black Bean providing layers of flavour to the zingy heat. The pork was, like the ribs in the starter, deliciously succulent, suggesting some sort of slow cooking and showing that whoever’s in the kitchen is admirably proud of communicating the elegant details of one of the world’s great cuisines. Puddings, alas, were something of an afterthought. For me it was a Banana Fritter that, though wonderfully crisp with its caramelly batter, couldn’t help but make us wonder again just what kind of mentalist would ever think it might sit snugly next to tomato and chicken in

Maryland’s most bewildering gift to the world? If only they’d listened to that voice at the back at the council meeting when it came to the “What Shall We Export?” vote on Chicken Served With Banana Fritters v A Land Full Of Girls Called Mary. Doh! My companion went for the only other option on the dessert menu. Ice Cream. A scoop of (ordinary) ice cream in a bowl. So we’re not exactly going to bleat about any trade description quibbles, but maybe, in this Year Of The Rabbit, it might be worth looking at the moon and seeing if there’s any kind of great Chinese puddings behind that bunny stuck up there with the Cassia tree. Go to any shop in the country’s Chinatowns and you’ll see some fine varieties of lotus cakes, unusual for Inverness maybe, but something that might be worth considering for a restaurant that’s obviously capable of being more than just your average high street Chinese. Gung Hay Fat Choy! As the rabbits are saying. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £33.98

BOOKS

Cattle on a Thousand Hills by Katharine Stewart

Katharine Stewart graces us once again with another of her historical looks at life in the Highlands. This time the theme is cattle, however you don’t need to have a particular interest in all things bovine to find interest in this book because as ever Katharine weaves the information around a series of entertaining anecdotes which give a fascinating insight into Highland life hundreds of years ago. We learn where the Highland cattle we know today derived from and how they became domesticated. Also the part

cattle have played in so many facets of Highland life, culture and history. Katharine Stewart always writes with such conviction and enthusiasm for her subject that you willingly go on the journey with her back to days gone by. She plays an important role in the recording the traditional crofting practices of the Highlands and she does it with a lovely light touch which makes it accessible to the average reader.

“Her favourite song was ‘Lily Marlene’. If I

sang anything different she would turn her head and give me a look from her big dark eys.”

New smartphone app for Inverness

It’s a new year, and now there is a new way for Inverness residents and visitors to save money whilst supporting local businesses. mi inverness have just launched a new smartphone app developed specifically for the Inverness area, which details special offers and promotions from local eating, leisure and entertainment businesses.

Having previously run a successful restaurant in Cromarty, mi inverness owner and local businessman COLIN MUNRO is aware of how difficult it is to tell people about the best deals, so he developed the idea of the app and website to help bring everything together into one place.

Colin said: “There’s no doubt that most of us are feeling the pinch at the moment and so now, more than ever, we’re looking for ways to cut down on our spending without sacrificing our standard of living. The ‘mi inverness’ app makes it easy to find out what’s on offer locally without having to trawl the internet.”

STEWART NICOL, Chief Executive of Inverness Chamber of Commerce said “The new mi inverness smartphone app and website are great new resources for both residents and visitors to the Inverness area. They also provide cost effective ways for local businesses to let people know about their latest offers and promotions”

The ‘mi inverness’ app is available for both iPhone and Android phones and allows people to search through all the latest local offers whilst on the move.

Not having a smartphone needn’t mean missing out, ‘mi inverness’ also has a handy website where signing-up for the free weekly email update couldn’t be easier.

Nationwide’s 2010 house price repor t is slightly more positive, showing UK prices vir tually static in 2010, with a small 0.4% increase for December. Where both mor tgage providers agree is that average house prices across the UK have fallen during 2010. Halifax puts the drop at £5,741, leaving the UK average house price at

During 2010 we saw a 19% increase in enquiries through the HSPC website. That demonstrates that there are potential buyers out there, keen to enter the market. What we need to do is overcome the mor tgage issues and boost financial confidence to conver t

During 2010 we saw a substantial growth in the number of proper ties on the market. “In the final quar ter of 2010 we had a record numbers of proper ties on the HSPC register. That means potential buyers have the widest range of proper ties to choose from, while prices remain keen.”

Martial Arts

From Master Dunbar at Dunbar Blackbelt Academy If there was one thing you would like to do for yourself in 2011what would it be? If the answer is get fit and feel good about yourself then make the move to Martial Arts. If your goal is simply to lose weight and improve your confidence, why not consider a sport that can help you achieve this and so much more. Of course, the most obvious benefit is the knowledge of self defence, which is one of the main reasons why ‘arts’ were developed in the first place, however expect to see a significant improvement in your flexibility, co-ordination and self confidence, martial arts will sharpen your body and your mind. What’s more the whole family can benefit, it’s great for kids too! Classes for kids usually start from around 4 years old and upwards with the focus being very much based on learning through fun. Sometimes it’s a real struggle for parents to find activities for children that build important values such as respect, discipline and confidence and these are just some of the benefits that are often lacking in other sports. These skills will help them become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. So if you want to kick start your New Year feeling refreshed and energised make a move to your nearest professional Martial Arts Centre.

The Riot Starter?

On my way home the other night there was a story on

the news about a disturbance at Littlehey Prison in Huntingdon. I always get a sense of dread when I hear of such things, oddly I worry that I might in someway be responsible. It know it doesn’t seem like a rational response to the situation seeing as Huntingdon’s near Cambridge and I’m four hundred miles away in Inverness, but that doesn’t stop it being a real, if slight, fear. I’m probably not responsible, it was over

SOCIAL MEDIA BECOMING BUSINESS FOCUS IN ROSS-SHIRE • Business Gateway running new courses in 2011. More and more businesses in Ross-shire are turning to social media and now with the help of Business Gateway they can learn exactly how to use the medium to increase sales. A recent course held in Gairloch for the Gairloch Tourism Association and attended by over 20 people, was a great success and has led Business Gateway to arrange more for the future. Many local companies believe social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, will be an essential tool in 2011 and want to learn more about how it can be beneficial to them. RENE LOOPER of 4TM, a social media marketing business that will run the events said: “The feedback we received from the recent workshop has been very positive and shows us that social media is an important issue in the area. The workshops are specifically designed to guide people through the different types of digital opportunities available and to advise them on which ones can benefit them the most. “We hope that the workshops we run in conjunction with Business Gateway will open up the possibilities of the advantages of social media to a wider audience. With millions of people on Twitter and Facebook, companies can’t afford not to have a social media presence.” Last year many businesses owners in the area have been asking their local Business Gateway Regional Development officers for advice on how they can use social media to engage with their target customers. Business Gateway offers entrepreneurs the chance to learn about social media, the pros and cons of using it and which type will be most suited to their particular business, either through their workshops or via one-to-one advice. DONALD MACKENZIE, Services Manager, Business Gateway said: “Social networking is becoming more and more important to the area’s business community. Facebook, Twitter and other sites such as Trip Adviser, now all play a huge role in developing a company’s reputation and profile. “We have been approached by many tourism businesses in Ross-shire, all keen to take advantage of the opportunities social networking sites offer. Our first course was aimed at those in the tourism industry but social media affects every kind of business, so we hope our future workshops will be a great addition to our event schedule for all local companies.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses. To find out more about how Business Gateway can help you set up and develop your own business as well as find out when and where workshops are taking place, visit www.bgateway.com or call 0845 609 6611. Alternatively call your local Business Gateway office directly on 01463 713889.
