So, erm, yeah. Hundredth issue. Is that a deal? Just a number really.... Anyway, rather than get all schleppy and back-slappingly self-congratulatory on your asses, we’ll just say a big THANKYOU to you, our readers. And we’ll say a big thankyou from all of YOU to our advertisers - without whom we wouldn’t be able to afford to give you this for free every month. So that’s nice. A funny thing though - months before we even printed an issue, we knocked up a demo front page - to show people what it would look like - and who did we use as our ‘pretend’ cover star? One Father-Ted-fame-fuelled ARDAL O’HANLON (see below). So quite fitting really that for our 100th issue that said comedian should be visiting Inverness - one of a major invasion of heavyweight comedic talent this month! Still didn’t put him on the front, but we did keep the design the same for our actual first cover. So anyone remember who was our first cover star? send your answer to the txt/email/post details at foot of page* – and we’ll find something really splendid for you to win... So, it has become customary for us to give you a list of teasers and tasters of highlights available to you in the month ahead. But seems we haven’t left much space this time! So let us point out some shows around [ARMSTRONG&MILLER, RAY MEARS, ANDY IRVINE, CARMEN, ED BYRNE, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, LOCH NESS MARATHON, SCOTTISH BALLET, ED RUSHCA and, erm, DARIUS...] and let you reflect on how the area has changed entertainment-wise in the 9–plus years we’ve been going... Still haven’t topped the unlikely visit to Eden Court of The Smiths tho’ - 25 years ago on 1st October!... More inside as usual - and at:

DAVID HOCKNEY: GRIMM’S FAIRY TALES @The Lime Tree An Ealdhain Gallery, Fort William, until Sun 10 Oct

A

n interesting exhibition of etchings by David Hockney illustrating six fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. Hockney has given each fairy tale his own interpretation. Rather than illustrating the stories literally, he has chosen vivid images to encapsulate a mood or detail. Some of the tales are familiar, like Rapunzel and Rumpelstilzchen; others, such as Old Rinkrank, Fundevogel and the Little Sea Hare are little known. The tales are drawn from centuries of folklore. As Hockney points out: “The stories weren’t written by the Brothers Grimm…they came across this woman called Catherina Dorothea Viehmann, who told 20 stories to them in this simple language, and they were so moved by them that they wrote them down word for word as she spoke.” His contemporary and often humorous approach to the tales is reflected in the quirky nature of the images. Of Rapunzel he says “...the stories really are quite mad, when you think of it, and quite strange. In modern times, it’s like the story of a couple moving into a house, and in the next door’s garden they see this lettuce growing: and the wife develops this craving for the lettuce that she just must have and climbs over to pinch it, and the old woman who lives in the house next door says well, you can have the lettuce if you give me your child, and they agree to it. And if you put it into terms like this and imagine them in their semi detached house agreeing to it all, it seems incredible.” http://www.limetreefortwilliam.co.uk

UNLOCKING DOORS: A PORTRAIT OF PRISON LIFE @ Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, throughout October An exhibition of recent art and written work produced by offenders who attend the Education Department in Inverness Prison. The opportunity to work towards a public exhibition is a boost to the artists’ self-esteem and motivation and improves their connection to home and community. These factors all help in their rehabilitation, and reduce reoffending.

EDGE: HEBRIDES PATRICIA MACDONALD @ Inverness Museum and Art Gallery until 20 Nov An aerial view of a cultural landscape. Dramatic aerial photographs by Patricia MacDonald with Angus MacDonald. “The Edge is intense, creative, demanding and dangerous: a liminal zone. The archipelago of the Hebrides is such a place. It combines Boreal (northern) and Atlantic (western) qualities of climate and ecology”. Exhibition toured by Highland Council Exhibitions Unit in association with the National Galleries of Scotland.

MAPPING OUR LAND @ Eden Court, throughout October Highland Print Studio, supported by Highland Council has been working with pupils from six secondary schools to create artworks inspired by mapping imagery from the past and present. The artworks were created using a combination of traditional screen-printing and digital imaging techniques and you can see the results at Eden Court throughout October.

ART > IOTA Sat 11 Sep: One of those Highland nights…

A

s the audience quickly filled the upper room of 19 Church St on Sat 11 Sep it became very clear that this was going to be another of those special Highland nights where chance, quality, hospitality and place come together to weave a magic. In the audience was the wide extended family of ‘art in public’ in Inverness and the Highlands who had come to hear talks by Sans façon and Walker and Bromwich – two of the hottest pairs of contemporary British artists working in public space. This was the kind of line-up that one could easily pay big money to see in a conference venue down south and here we were enjoying the hospitality arranged by Lindsay Dunbar [IOTA] in the attic room above ICA magazine in Inverness. After two inspiring and entertaining talks we all emerged onto the street to encounter San façon’s project, ‘Limelight’ (Inverness is one of only 10 cities the project is visiting as part of a world tour financed by Arlington, Virginia). The project inspires a strange desire for your city to demonstrate that it had madder inhabitants than anywhere else and Sans façon were interested to record that Inverness was the only place so far where people were inspired to do PRESS-UPS in the spotlight?! >>>

FILM

MADE IN DAGENHAM @ Eden Court, Fri 15 Oct - Thu 28 Oct Unusual subject matter for a film- the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination- but one that excellently conveys an important time in modern British history, when unions still had power and there were principles to be fought for. A star-studded cast includes Miranda Richardson (as the remarkable MP Barbara Castle), Rosamund Pike, Bob Hoskins and Richard “West Wing” Schiff and it’s already being lauded as one of the best British films in years. Don’t miss it.

SOUL BOY @ Eden Court, Fri 15 Oct - Thu 21 Oct The second film this month to look back to what life was like for some in the Britain of decades gone by, this one finding a working class lad, Joe, growing up and falling in love against the backdrop of the legendary Wigan Casino, Mecca of Northern Soul. Fine young actor Martin Compston plays Joe and there’s also a role for Lily Allen’s brother Alfie, but best of all there’s a wonderful recreation of life in the Seventies and, of course, that magnificent musical sub culture.

Takers (12A) @ Vue Inverness, From Fri 01 Oct Matt Dillon’s been off the radar for a while and there’s a new generation who’ll actually know his brother better for “Entourage”. Hopefully sanity will be restored as Matt stars in this story of a group of bank robbers finding their 20 million dollar plans interrupted by a reckless police officer.

Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (12A) @ Vue Inverness, From Fri 08 Oct The follow up to the film that defined the horrible Greed Is Good eighties. Michael Douglas plays Gordon Gecko, fresh out of jail and making money telling people why greed is, er, bad.

Despicable Me 3D (PG) @ Vue Inverness, From Fri 15 Oct Evil Genius Gru, (Steve Carell) along with his army of minions, is planning the biggest evil act ever: to steal... THE MOON. But being evil takes a soft turn when he has to look after three little girls. “Gru must substitute being Bad for being dad”. Oh, for goodness sake. It’s inexplicably in 3D.

TUES 26 OCT

BLUE VELVET @ EDEN COURT CINEMA, 7.30PM This is the most complete of David Lynch’s films, made before his disturbing black vision of small-town American life veered into self-parody. The dark tone is set from the opening sequence, which starts with white picket fences and cheery firemen but ends with a man suffering a stroke in his garden while insect life seethes beneath the lawn. Kyle MacLachlan (who made his acting debut for Lynch in Dune in 1984) plays the young innocent who gets sucked into the bizarre sadomasochistic relationship between nightclub singer Isabella Rossellini and monstrous local crime boss Dennis Hopper. The latter resurrected his career with a crazed portrait of evil — legend has it that Hopper said “I’ve got to play Frank. Because I am Frank”. Once experienced here, listening to Roy Orbison’s ‘In Dreams’ will never be the same again.

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL @ Eden Court, Tue 05 Oct Contrary to what some might have you believe, appreciation of Shakespeare isn’t falling away, rather it’s actually strengthening as reworkings of the plays can be found in almost every form of media. This festival, the largest youth drama event in the UK and now in its tenth year, will find four local schools showcasing four different half-hour plays. The same thing will be happening in 80 other cities giving 14,000 young people a chance to witness the genius of old Will. www.ssf.uk.com

THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Wed 13 Oct @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 15 & Sat 16 Oct Something of a regular production up here, which perhaps demonstrates just how popular it is. This beautifully told tale of a French farmer’s obsession with planting trees uses miniature puppetry, birds on fishing rods and even the scent of lavender and forest glades to create a witty, exuberant hour of children’s theatre that plays with all your senses. Jean Giono’s piece is something of an environmental cult classic, but even more than that, it’s just a sheer delight, as the Puppet State Theatre Company demonstrates with some panache. And it’s just as likely to appeal to grown-ups as kids. www.eden-court.co.uk www.strathpefferpavilion.org

HIGHLAND BABY SHOW @ Eden Court Bishop’s Palace, Sat 09 & Sun 10 Oct The first baby show to be staged in the North promises to be a must-visit for all the family, with attractions for “yummy mummies, new dads and their tiny tots”. A one-stop shop for all your maternity and baby needs with a wide array of exhibitors including online booksellers Ablekids, Wonder Years Portrait Photographers and the Highland Real Nappy Project. Plus, if you head along on the Sunday between 11 and 12, the chance to pop into Eden Court Baby Groove in the Jim Love Studio for a bit of dancing. Eden Court Arts Education will also be running a stall and creative play area. It’s £2.50 and children go free.

ICM CONCERT SERIES: BADKE STRING QUARTET @ Inverness Town House, Tue 12 Oct, 8pm

T

he Badke String Quartet will be performing music by Haydn, Ravel and Grieg at the Inverness Town House. This quartet of graduates from London’s Royal Academy of Music has received 1st

Prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition as well as many positive reviews. With their interesting selection of music, this concert will be a highlight for all fans of string music.

CHOPIN RECITAL @ Eden Court One Touch, Wed 06 Oct, 7.30pm The piano music of Frederick Chopin has been amongst the most unusual and influential in the world. The melancholy beauty of his work embodies some of the spirit of Autumn, and indeed it is the 200th anniversary of his birth on the 6th of October when young musicians from Krakow will perform a selection of his work at the One Touch Theatre.

MILLENNIUM STRING QUARTET @ Inverness Town House, Fri 08 Oct, 1.10pm THE MILLENIUM QUARTET @ Invergordon Academy, Fri 08 Oct, 7.30pm The Millenium String quartet come to the Highlands from Venezuala. This orchestra is composed of graduates from the El Sistema programme, which aims to bring the achievements of classical culture to children from impoverished backgrounds and has been an overwhelming success. Given the precarious position of classical culture in our own country, this should be an essential concert.

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE WITH PIETER WISPELWEY, CELLO @ Eden Court One Touch, Sun 10 Oct, 3pm, 5.15pm The world renowned cellist Peter Wispelway comes to Eden Court’s one touch theatre to play a selection of pieces. Firstly, there is Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in G-minor. This is one of the most accomplished pieces by the master of the baroque. He will also be playing an original composition by the acclaimed Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen.

RSNO @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 21 Oct, 7.15pm, 8pm

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will perform Edward Elgar’s First Symphony at Eden Court Empire Theatre. A great hit at its first performance, this work will be sure to continue to inspire the rapturous applause it received when it debuted. Similarly, the RSNO has its roots in the Scottish Orchestra of the 1890s, and has continued to produce top quality music. ALSO ON: Other notable music events will include the Vogler String quartet, which performs classical masterpieces at Nairn Community Centre on Saturday 16 October, 8pm and the versatile pianist Harry the Piano @ Ogstoun Theatre, Gordonstoun School, Nr Elgin, 7.30pm, Tuesday 19 October.

ANDY IRVINE @ Glen Urquhart Public Hall, Fri 08 Oct @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sat 09 Oct

T

he “living legend” tag gets bandied about with some abandon these days, but here’s someone who most definitely deserves the accolade. In a career spanning 45 years he’s established himself as an iconic figure with his combination of Irish traditional songs, Balkan dances and

his own self-penned numbers played on the bouzouki. As a street performer back in the sixties he travelled to Bulgaria, Romania and Yugoslavia, first encountering the Balkan sounds that he fell in love with. From there he worked with Christy Moore in the seminal Planxty and with Paul Brady and Dick Gaughan, making for quite a CV. His live shows are stunning and he’s even been called “Ireland’s Woody Guthrie”, meaning these dates are nigh on unmissable. If you want to know what to expect, you can download some of his songs for free at www.andyirvine.com

BLAZIN’ IN BEAULY @ Beauly, 11-15 Oct A unique opportunity for fans and students of traditional music in the area as BIB celebrates its tenth year. Started, as the name suggests, by the band Blazin’ Fiddles, it’s ostensibly a fiddle school, but in reality far more than that, giving people the chance to immerse themselves in the music of the Highlands and Islands. If you play the fiddle, cello, keyboard or guitar, get along and have the chance to work with world class performers. But the instruction is only a part of the week - the sessions, the talks, the concerts and the craic all add up to make it a much loved and thriving event. And you’ll definitely get the chance to work with some great musicians. Tutors for this year are: The Blazin Fiddles - Allan Henderson, Bruce MacGregor, Catriona Macdonald, Iain MacFarlane (all fiddle) with Andy Thorburn on Keyboard and Anna Massie (fiddle/guitar). Guest Tutors are: Duncan Chisholm (fiddle), Ivan Drever & Brian Cromarty (guitar and mandolin), Christine Hanson (cello), James Macintosh (percussion), Kaela Rowan (Gaelic singing), Greg Lawson (violin), David Anderson (amplification techniques), Rick Taylor (groupwork) and special guests to be announced. The week concludes on Fri 15 Oct with a Grand Finale at Phipps Hall featuring the original Blazin’ Fiddles lineup back together. For all the details go to www.blazininbeauly.com

MICHAEL MCGOLDRICK & FRIENDS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 23 Oct

A

cclaimed folk flautist McGoldrick was founder member of influential Manchester Celtic band Toss The Feathers and has also been

part of Capercaillie. Always open to a bit of boundary-busting, he’s fused folk with jazz and trance and worked with people as diverse as Youssou N’Dour, John Cale and Kate Rusby. His last appearance at Eden Court was triumphant and this should be just as celebratory.

BRENDAN SHINE @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 21 Oct

There’s a wide variety of folk on offer this month and here’s something from the more traditional Irish end of the spectrum. Ex publican Shine has released more than forty albums and made a name for himself by singing about everyday Irish life with songs like “Spuds” and the magnificently titled “Do You Want Your Old Lobby Washed Down”. One of his songs even stayed in the Irish charts for five months, showing his popularity back home and there’ll be plenty here to join in the applause.

THE BEVVY SISTERS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 20 Oct @ Warehouse Theatre, Thu 21 Oct The Bevvy Sisters unite the richly seasoned voices of Heather Macleod, Kaela Rowan and Lindsey Black (see pic: left to right), in a headily harmonised cocktail of jazz, Americana, folk and newlywritten material. Sometimes sighted fronting Edinburgh’s semimythical Love Boat Big Band, they’re generally accompanied David Donnelly (guitar, mandolin), and James Mackintosh (percussion) and, on really special occasions, by Emma Smith (double bass). An invitation to play The Big Tent Festival (2008) saw the first solo appearance of The Bevvy Sisters and they also featured on Eliza Carthy’s acclaimed, ‘Dreams of Breathing Underwater’ album. Their debut album, ‘The Bevvy Sisters - St James Sessions’, was released at Celtic Connections in January 2010, suggesting they’re a combo very much on the rise. Well worth checking out.

NUALA KENNEDY & BAND @ Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 28 Oct

Elsewhere on this page you can read about flautist Michael McGoldrick and here’s another fine exponent of the instrument. Kennedy performs traditional Irish and Scottish music with grace and is always captivating live.

RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS @ Ironworks, Fri 29 Oct

Regulars in these parts, to the extent that they’re probably more popular than the American rock band from which they took their name, RHCP’s sound is a fusion of traditional pipe tunes and contemporary anthems. Their self-styled ‘Bagrock’ includes the likes of ‘Clocks’ by Coldplay, Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ and a rock medley of Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke On The Water’ and AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’. ‘Flower of Scotland’ and ‘The Hills of Argyll’ get a look in too, in their own inimitable style.

ULLAPOOL GUITAR FEST @ Ullapool, Fri 08-Sun 10 Oct A three day festival, embracing all things guitar-related, with evening concerts, late night performances and workshops to improve playing skills. The list of participants is longer than several people’s arms, but includes Gordon Giltrap, John Etheridge, Jennifer Batten, Ian Walsh and Sasha Savaloni. All set in a town that positively thrums with a celebration of musical creativity. For the full line up and programme of events go to www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com

MUSIC > Jazz & World MUGENKYO TAIKO DRUMMERS @ Eden Court Empire, Sun 31 Oct

T

his looks terrific and certainly unlike anything else you’ll see this year. Vibrant spectacle as well as impressive sonic experience, it finds Europe’s leading taiko drum group bringing their passionately contemporary take on a traditional art form to the stage. We’re promised “layers of percussive soundscapes and delicate bamboo flute in a spellbinding display of precise choreography and sheer athleticism”. And there aren’t many nights out that come with a promise like that.

TIM KLIPHUIS TRIO @ Glen Urquhart Public Hall, Sun 24 Oct Jazz? Classical? Folk? Well actually, a bit of all three. Dutch violinist Kliphuis has performed his blend of gypsy jazz, classical and folk music on stages all around the world, breaking down boundaries and building up a dedicated following. Hugely influenced by the likes of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli he’s joined by Roy Percy and Nigel Clark for a trio that combines effortless virtuosity with melodic lyricism and adding musical flavours and influences from around the globe to create an inspired and daring acoustic fusion. In their short, four-year collaboration they have recorded two critically acclaimed CDs and racked up successful appearances at, amongst others, Baltimore Fiddle Fair, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Richard Strauss Festival and Fiddles On Fire, dazzling audiences and fellow musicians alike with “their precision, their exhilarating energy and their almost telepathic interplay”.

MARTIN TAYLOR’S SPIRIT OF DJANGO @ Eden Court Empire, Wed 27 Oct It’s quite a month for fans of Hot Club De Paris and gypsy jazz as not only can you catch Tim Kliphuis (see elsewhere on this page), but there’s also the welcome return of Martin Taylor, a man whose very being seems to be infused with the eponymous Spirit of Django. Reforming the group of that name after a 15 year hiatus, he’s marking the hundredth anniversary of Reinhardt’s birth with an album, Last Train To Hauteville and playing Inverness as part of what seems a perpetual worldwide tour. Having collaborated with such luminaries as Stephane Grappelli, Chet Atkins, George Harrison and Dionne Warwick, he’s obviously held in high esteem by fellow musicians as much as delighted

audiences. Here’s your chance to find out why.

THE HISTORY OF THE BIG BANDS @ Eden Court Empire, Wed 20 Oct

R

emember Darius from Pop Idol? Seemed to come back time and time again despite everything and even popped up recently on another reality show trying to turn mere mortals into opera stars. Now he’s turning his attention to swing and the Big Bands,

presenting an evening of all the great songs from the likes of Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. You get the feeling it’s going to be rather more enjoyable than the surface sheen adopted by Westlife and Robbie Williams’ attempts to “do” the Rat Pack and maybe Darius has found his spiritual home at last.

MAGGIE BELL & DAVE KELLY @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 02 Nov Two stalwarts of the British blues scene, Bell and Kelly are always popular when they visit these parts. Maggie, founder member of Stone The Crows, is often acclaimed as Scotland’s Queen of Soul, while Kelly is the king of slide guitar having learnt his trade in the backing bands of such greats as Howlin’ Wolf, John lee Hooker and Buddy Guy. Should be quite a show. www.eden-court.co.uk

MUSIC > Rock SPARROW AND THE WORKSHOP @ Mad Hatters, Sat 02 Oct

T

hey call the music they make “dark folk”, but at their best the Glasgow-based trio defy categorisation. Their debut album

“Crystal Falls” is a thing of some beauty, showing a rare talent for atmospheric songwriting and the potential for big things ahead. Now’s your chance to check em out before they’re too big for the likes of us. And it’s free! Don’t miss it. Meanwhile we caught up with the band to ask them what they’ve been listening to recently. 1. Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love “Makes us feel good when we’ve been looking at the M5 for too long”. 2. The Besnard Lakes – Albatross “This song has a loud and raw sound and is awesome performed live”. 3. The Breeders - German Studies “It’s in German, which is funny, and it’s also got great hooks and chunky guitar riffs”. 4. Tegan and Sara - Walking With a Ghost “Infectious melody and nice, sparkly strumming”. 5. Scout Niblett – Kiss “It features a duet with Will Oldham and builds up really well into a loud and yearning thing”.

ABERFELDY @ Ironworks, Sat 16 Oct A welcome return for Aberfeldy and their lush pop shapes. With something of the spirit of Guillemots about them, it seemed for a while as if the world was theirs for the taking and when they last played here (at Hoots), they were mighty impressive. Since then they’ve had to deal with being dropped by their label and the departure of a couple of band members, but now they’re back with an album Somewhere To Jump From that suggests they’re still well worth investing your faith in. Songwriter Riley Briggs is just as open to influences like Stock, Aitken and Waterman and AOR as he is to Neil Young, making for a refreshingly unpredictable sound. And they’ve even got Stuart Adamson’s daughter Kirsten in the band. Let’s hope they get the acclaim they deserve this time round.

MY PASSION @ Ironworks, Fri 22 Oct Fans of emotronica will be out in force for a band who, despite appearances, aren’t from America, but leafy Hertfordshire. With their own Style Suicide label and club night, they’re keen to shape their career on their own terms and have consequently built a global fanbase of like minded souls. The music’s a bit metally, a bit punk-dance and pretty promising. A strong bill includes support from tattoed Swedes Dead By April who’ve been described as “the Linkin Park it’s OK to like” and punky popsters Summerlin.

26

ATTACK! ATTACK! @ Ironworks, Tue 19 Oct Welsh quartet who’ve toured with Lostprophets, Funeral For A Friend and Cancer Bats. They’re picking up support from daytime radio and even got their songs on the opening credits of Beverley Hills 90210 and Guitar Hero 5, so we expect you’ll be hearing a lot more from them. Support comes from Yashin, Straight Lines & Make Sparks.

WOODENBOX WITH A FISTFUL OF FIVERS @ Hootananny, Thu 14 Oct We bow to no one in our admiration for Woodenbox and their delightfully ramshackle vigour. If there’s any other band round right now that can get a party started quite so adeptly we’ve yet to encounter them. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing and we can’t help feeling it might be a good idea for the band to perhaps scale down the amount of times they play Inverness just a smidge. Not that we’ll be missing out on what’s guaranteed to be a great night, we’re just wondering whether they haven’t got homes to go to? We’ll be awaiting the second album eagerly, just as soon as they can drag themselves away from the Highlands to get on with making it.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS @ Ironworks, Thu 14 Oct

For some of us at ICA, SLF are second only to The Clash in the list of bands that changed our lives. And judging by the dedication of their followers we’re not alone. Jake, Ali and the boys are always splendid when they play up here and the old classics retain their spiky energy. Better still, there’s a whole new generation realising that, just like they say in Hi Fidelity, Green Day owe everything to the sound of SLF.

THE FRENCH WIVES @ Mad Hatters, Fri 15 Oct

Lovely pop in a Belle and Sebastian vein from a Glasgow combo who not only make great records, but also have the best designed sleeves around. Check out the beautiful cover for their latest single, Me vs. Me/ Hyndland Weather Bear if you don’t believe us. And hear some of their music at www.myspace.com/thefrenchwives It should be quite a night as TFW are followed by a set from the mighty Highland Junglists. Recommended.

SKALLOWEEN @ Hootananny, Sat 30 Oct

The whole building is taken over to mark Halloween with a set downstairs from Big Hand and Esperanza Ska in Mad Hatters. The former, an Edinburgh quartet, dub their sound “Zorbic ska” and have been described as the perfect backdrop to a Tarantino soundtrack” while the latter are a superskanking nine piece from Glasgow who’ve played with Toots and The Maytals, Neville Staple, the beat and many more. Will there be room on the stage? Whatever the case, it should be a lot of fun.

HOPELESS HEROIC @ Mad Hatters, Wed 13 Oct

You may recall a couple of Scots blokes pretending to be Americans and, under the name Silibil’n’Brains, attracting accolades Stateside for their hip hop. Look em up on YouTube for the whole story of their hoax and how it fell apart. Now one of the duo Gavin Bain is back with a band that combine hip hop with punk, metal and even classical violin. And very big things are predicted for them. So we can presume the American accents will be gone for good.

MUSIC > ROCK > RETRO (and cd’s)… THE RING OF FIRE @ Eden Court Empire, Mon 04 Oct THE TENNESSEE THREE @ Ironworks, Sun 17 Oct Quite a month for fans of Johnny Cash, but it’s a shame the two events couldn’t have been scheduled on successive nights. Maybe there would have been potential for some sort of ghostly Man In Black tribute out on Ness Islands. Instead we’re left with just (“just”?) a couple of reminders why anyone who says they don’t like country music is always wrong. Cash took the roots of Americana, the darkness of Hank Williams and the showmanship of a burgeoning commercial genre, fusing it with the emergence of rock’n’roll, added his own rebel twist and made a heap of glorious records that will outlive any one of us. Ring Of Fire finds a tribute band capturing the spirit and the story of the man, while The Tennessee Three conjure up his soul, having been his backing band. And hung around (and played) with Elvis at Sun Studios. They trump just about anyone you’ll ever meet in the what-must-it-be-like to-be-them? stakes and it ought to be compulsory to go along and see them.

THE ANIMALS @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 14 Oct

Seminal British rhythm & blues act who are still playing regularly forty years after first shaping the sound of pop. Even better, special guest is Spencer Davis, another iconic figure who any passing mod would sell their scooter for. The perfect opportunity, should you need one, to check out a great line up in one of the area’s finest venues.

G L A M R E LICKÁ !

T

he winter of ‘70–’71 I was living in Greenwich Village, NYC with Kenny Cooper (manager-record producer). East 13th St to be precise, close to the café’s and venues and studios (Electric Ladyland, Nobody’s and Bottom Line). The guys in my band CODY had gone home I remained and developed a close friendship with drummer–hairstylist, JERRY NOLAN and GREGOR LAROCQUE, a Haitian bass player. The band was called SHAKER!. We loved Rhythm & Blues and did a big Glam take on “I Can Tell” by Bo Diddley, some Motown and a wee bitti Glam Punk. We played Ski–Bee weekends for NY coach ski trips. We’d glam boots (one platform) – women loved us (!) and back-combed hair. I then had to return to London to see my then wife Irene (now deceased) as my visa had run out. Later I formed a quartet with JIMMY BAIN, SMIGGY (Bob) SMITH, KORKY WEIR and myself, called CHOKER. As most folks know, I’ve sensationally produced loads of music (be it at the sticky end of the sellotape market) however, Spector, the Shangri-La’s and, in my defence, Bo, are all in there. Jerry went on with DAVID JOHANSEN, ARTHUR KANE and SYLVAIN SYLVAIN to form NEW YORK DOLLS (the Phenomenon), with Ronnie Wood clone JOHNNY THUNDERS. Around 37 years on, Glam Relics THE NEW YORK DOLLS walked onstage at Ironworks, Inverness, Saturday 28th August. They were far too loud, but were balls-out, funkier and had more raw energy than any other band I’ve seen for the past 30 years, which was pre-empted by the glorious doll-leggy MARA and some beautiful opera (it was a wonderful show!). It was then assault and battery from FRANKIE INFANTE (guitar, ex-Blondie), movie star, vocals & harmonica, DAVE JOHANSEN & SYLVAIN ‘Duane Eddy’ SYLVAIN and a fabulous rhythm section of BRIAN DELANEY (drums) and bass player SAMI JAFFA – anyone who orders a fish supper after a gig with his bass still slung over his shoulder is a friend of mine!

“The Dolls played BIBA roof garden at Derry & Toms on Kensington High Street in 1973”, SYLVIAN “Caledonia” SYLVAIN tells me... I remember it well – me and Pirelli calendar girl/actress, Victoria Burgoyne, were top of Jerry’s guest list! It was a bit more hairdresser’s assistant than real hairdresser’s, however... We lost JOHNNY THUNDERS, JERRY NOLAN and GREGOR LAROCHE to heroin a long time ago, then ARTHUR KANE to leukemia. Fan club member, Morrissey, claims they’re the world’s greatest live act and I tend to agree (but remember he hasn’t heard some of my new songs yet!). The ‘Dolls are a relic of when backcombed hair, Bo Diddley, Pills, lots of sex and GLAMOUR ruled the world and you would have to play pretty good too, to get a gig. “Pills”, and “Bo Diddley” stood out as numbers, and the catchy hooks of “Dance Like A Monkey” and “Babylon” hauntingly embraced me. Their “Ooh-ooh”’s were good too! Dolls keep Living Like A Girl That Keeps On Giving.

In this foggy, Primark-laden over-populated world of media manipulation and Full Spectrum Domination, The ‘Dolls breathe life for myself and and substantial bunch of 50/60-something Glam Relicks still Living The Dream on this planet today. Personally I’ll try and make sure they return soon, coz the kids need to know too. We were and ARE GLAM RELICS and our output and experience vital, never going unnoticed never outta style as Jerry & Gregor would say “Its all about the PROFILE Noddy!!” PS: After the gig, Sylvain “Caledonia” Sylvain, David J and I got sharing and emotional about our long-lost buddies, Jerry and Gregor, discussed influences - Bo, Love Is Strange, Spector, etc. Then they told me Bo Diddley and The Dolls had cut a track (which never made it onto the record ) for their last album before he passed on to the great gretsch mannish boy in the sky. It was hard not to cry, so I did anyway, later! Is this the dawning of the Age of GLAM RELICKA? Let’s hope so. And to Mara, David, Sylvain Sylvain and everyone - thanks for showing up!

“Nothing ever changes on the highway to the WESTERN SUN!” In other words, without Bo Diddley - no Stones,no Pretty Things, no Dolls, no Morrissey...no me! Yours faithfully ROOTS DRUID, FORMERLY JEEP SOLID, DIDDLEY KATASTROVA!

Fantastikush! Come to my gig Sat 9th Oct - see above.

TALK > Survival & Storytelling RAY MEARS: FIELDCRAFT SURVIVAL @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 29 Oct

W

e expect that Ray Mears won’t be needing a hotel room after this event, perhaps preferring to head for the hills to fashion shelter out of twigs and moss before chowing down some sort of freshly trapped woodland creature. You certainly get the impression

that this is a man not just comfortable in the Great Outdoors, but one who treats four walls and a roof as namby symptoms of a society that’s lost touch with nature. What makes him so appealing is that while evangelical about

techniques he’s learnt over the last thirty years, he manages to communicate what he’s picked up with real enthusiasm, meaning that he’s never been short of TV work. Anyone who can come up with a series called The Essential Guide To Rocks and make it interesting has to be celebrated. At the heart of it all is his bushcraft, survival techniques for those times when you find yourself abandoned in the wilderness without so much as the latest iPhone, a four poster bed and a well-stocked mini-bar. You can be pretty sure this will involve conjuring fire from nowhere, noshing on leaves and whittling. Lots and lots of whittling. He’ll be sharing anecdotes about his own experiences as well as revealing tips everyone should know if we’re in for another winter up here like the last one. Recommended. www.eden-court.co.uk

AINU STORYTELLING EVENING @ Bogbain Farm, Thu 28 Oct @ Universal Hall, Fri 29 Oct This is a curious one alright, but drawing on one of Scotland’s least known anthropological links to an enigmatic culture. An indigenous people from Hokkaido, the Northern Island of Japan, for five hundred years they endured persecution and by the 1900s there was every likelihood that they would die out. Surprisingly the benevolent intervention of a Scottish doctor influenced that outcome. Neil Gordon Munro lived with the Ainu, administered medicine and treated their illnesses virtually free, encouraging them to have pride in their language. Now you’ll get a couple of opportunities to experience Ainu storytelling and its traditional rhythmic accompaniment (with translation), and learn about the Ainu’s historical and cultural connections with Scotland. With Tomatsu Nabesawa, the world’s foremost Ainu storyteller, Shiro Kayano, head of the Ainu of Hokkaido, and Highland tradition bearer George MacPherson. www.bogbainfarm.com

INVERNESS WINTER FESTIVAL Starts @ Ness Islands, Halloween

T

he 2010 INVERNESS WINTER FESTIVAL bursts into life this month with a Halloween show that is guaranteed to fill the streets of Inverness with characters from a Rocky Horror Show – actually make that a Frocky Horror Show!

MALICE IN WONDERLAND, the biggest Halloween Party ever staged in the Highlands, will take place on Friday 29 & Saturday 30 October and will see thousands of spectators heading down to the riverside to enjoy a 1300 metre wander around Ness Islands. Presented by the creative geniuses of Eden Court’s Education team, Arts in Motion and the Highland Council’s Lighting Department; the Malice in Wonderland Show is suitable for children of all ages and will feature a host of crazy characters who will do their very best to help Alice discover what happened to the White Rabbit. (We checked the Restaurant Review and thankfully he was not there – Ed) With over 100 costumed performers led by the Mad Hatter’s Mother and the King and Queen of Tarts, this show is determined to be the biggest outdoor theatrical event staged in the Highlands this year; but what makes this event really special, is only really revealed when the bridges on to Ness Islands are opened at 6.30pm…

36

Last year hundreds of spectators of all ages, and we do mean hundreds of spectators, decided to show their support for the show by dressing up.

& Saturday 30th October @ Ness Islands bridges open 6.30pm )

inter Festival event - suitable for children of all ages. tumed characters, including the Mad Hatter’s Mother nd the King and Queen of Tarts.

ss Glamorous or Jamorous!

With orders from the King and Queen of Tarts for the folk of Inverness to pay them a visit dressed “utterly glamorously or at least in jam related outfits”; hopes are high that this year will see new heights of creativity being reached. Remember - it’s “Glamorous or Jamorous”! As the younger vampires, zombies, monsters, creatures and “things” head home to bed; the chances are that Inverness City Centre will be invaded by folk dressed in costumes that are worth travelling some distance to see. Imagine a Hogmanay Hen Night in New Orleans during the filming of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and you might get just some idea of why we love Halloween in Inverness these days! Full details of the 2010 Inverness Winter Festival programme can be found at:

www.invernessfestivals.com The Inverness Festival Runs from Halloween to Hogmanay & is sponsored by the Inverness Common Good Fund.

There’ll be plenty more on the other events in the Winter Festival next month, what with it being winter and everything, but here are just some of the things you can look forward to:

05 Nov BONFIRE & FIREWORKS At Bught Park - bigger and better than ever. 21 Nov CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON. With Santa and special guests. Followed by carols at St Stephen’s Old High Church. 11 & 12 Dec RUDOLPH’S WINTER WONDERLAND. Rudolph and his reindeer friends fly into Whin Park. 31 Dec RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING. Hopefully not as snowy as last year so you can bring in the New Year with The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Peatbog Fairies and Blazin Fiddles. 37

SPECIALS > ARCHAEOLOGY FORTNIGHT & GOLDEN SPURTLE > PORRIDGE MAKING CHAMPIONSHIPS @ Carrbridge, Sun 10 Oct For one day, the little village of Carrbridge becomes the venue for the porridge-making Olympics as the 17th Annual Golden Spurtle takes place. While the core of the event remains the search for the best porridge made from just oats, salt and water (with people even bringing their own special water), there’s also some wild invention in the form of all manner of fancy variations. Competitors travel from all over the world and it can surely only be a matter of time before the whole event is televised live. Check out a video of last year’s event at http://tinyurl.com/32wuyoz www.goldenspurtle.com

HIGHLAND ARCHEOLOGY FESTIVAL 2-17 Oct The Highland Archaeology Festival provides an excellent opportunity to present the results of recent field projects and research, raise awareness of local archaeology, history and heritage and encourage people to discover the historic environment of the Scottish Highlands, an area perhaps more rewarding for such things than anywhere else in the country. There will be events and seminars throughout the region, plus walks, historical enactments and more. Of local interest, the events taking place at Culloden battlefield and guided tours of ancient stones and prehistoric sites are perhaps most relevant, but there are plenty of fascinating opportunities to learn more about the past. You can download a full brochure at www.highland.gov.uk/archaeology

Ever thought about Fostering?

ICA went to speak with Irene Broomfield at Highland Council Fostering and Adoption Service – where we found a truly committed team delivering an excellent service (despite growing financial pressures - a familiar part of public sector life nowadays). In addition to fostering and adoption, the service provides short term respite care (‘short break care’) for families or carers of children with disability. The greatest need the service has is simply for people to put themselves forward to get involved. You get money and professional support, peer support and training - but those aren’t reasons to get involved. These are our thoughts:

So, think about it...

There are over 300 children each year in our region who need a home. Their stories are many and varied, sure, but they are all children. In need of some very simple things. A welcome home, some security, safety and respect. Sometimes some understanding. They might need somewhere for three days, three months - even three years. They need help. They need people. What kind of people do they need? Ordinary people. Not a special breed, not superhumans, not people with loads of money or no other kids. Ordinary, everyday people... people like YOU. Many people think about fostering (you see the ads of kids in need and the natural instinct is to want to help, right?) - but then, real life kicks in - “We couldn’t have someone with us for that long”, “What about our own kids”, “They wouldn’t want us, we’re not qualified enough”. And so on. But. These objections aren’t necessarily valid. In simple terms, almost ANYONE has SOMETHING to offer the Fostering service. And the beauty is - YOU can decide how little or much you are prepared to offer. • Only able to take kids for short periods? – Yes, please! • Only available during weekends or holidays? – Yes, please! • Only interested in assisting certain age groups? – Yes, please! • Only got a small house? – Yes, please! • Got a house full of other kids? – Yes, please! So you see - you really probably can help. If it’s not for you, that’s fine – but if you’re one of the many many people who occasionally consider fostering, don’t be afraid, don’t assume it’s not people like you who are needed. There is a constant need for renewing and replenishing the pool of people able to offer support as people move away or make other life changes that mean fostering is no longer suitable to them. 60% of the current fostering pool have joined in the last 5 years, but there is still a growing need. The main message here is: DON’T RULE YOURSELF OUT. If you’ve toyed with the idea, or think it would be a good thing to do, pursue it - it really will make a real difference to some young lives.

So, think about it.

INVERNESS ABC BOXING TOURNAMENT @ Ironworks, Fri 01 Oct AMERICAN STYLE WRESTLING @ Ironworks, Fri 08 Oct

T

wo pugilistic nights of a very different stripe. The success of the previous ABC event, means Inverness’ amateur boxers are back again to take on teams from the rest of Scotland. Perhaps you’ll see a future star in the making. “American style” wrestling, on the other hand,

appears to be some sort of shorthand for glitzy showmanship, the mistaken belief that there isn’t enough natural drama in sport to start off with and therefore that it requires the crowbarring in of soap-style narratives just to jazz it up a bit. One’s a sport, one’s a game. But which is which? www.ironworksvenue.com

MATCHROOM PREMIER LEAGUE SNOOKER @ Inverness Leisure, Thu 14 Oct “And that’s a terrible miss,” as Mitchell and Webb would have it. In fact it’s rather a treat as big time snooker finally comes to Inverness. And what’s more, it’s televised on Sky as part of the channel’s coverage of Premier League Snooker, so expect Jim White and Georgie Thompson to be getting all previous about the prospect of the fixture coming to the Highlands. The night will see 2010 World Champion Neil Robertson joined by 2008 PLS semi-finalist Mark Selby. That match will be followed by two more fine players, Mark Williams and Marco Fu in battle over two evening sessions. A big turnout is expected and hopefully this can be the first step towards establishing the ‘Ness on the snooker circuit. www.invernessleisure.com

SPORT > Loch Ness Marathon & Blitz Awards

LOCH NESS MARATHON Sun 03 Oct We told you last month about how the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon, the fourth biggest in the country, is making a few changes for this year’s event, including incorprorating the Wee Nessie event for pre schoolers into a packed day that also includes 10K and 5K runs, with over 8,000 entries expected in total. It’s worth reminding you that the whole thing is much more spectator friendly this year with the finish line moved to the heart of the city down by the river. There’ll be live music, pipes and drums, Highland dancing and a Food and Drink Fayre (with cooking demonstrations) plus loads more activities for all the family, so even if you’re not participating, get along to offer your support and make a day of it. www.lochnessmarathon.com

BLITZ AWARDS 2010 @ Ironworks, Sun 24 Oct With the new NFL season underway and back on its “proper” home, Channel 4, there are some of us who’ll be hoping the 49ers can finally rediscover past glories. Whatever, you can be sure that there’ll be renewed widespread interest in Gridiron, but there’s actually a thriving culture up here with Inverness Blitz running American Football programmes, projects and leagues in the local area as well as supporting the Highland Wildcats squads. Their end of season celebrations, rewarding players and volunteers for their efforts throughout the past twelve months, get bigger and better each year so expectations for this one will be high. www.invernessblitz.co.uk

INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES ON TOUR - PAMPALONA OCTOBER 2010 Talking about the extremely strange costumes that will be created for this month’s Winter Festival’s Halloween Show on Ness Islands (see page 36 / 37) got us thinking about what was the weirdest costume that we had ever seen worn on the streets of Inverness. After a quick wander down a memory lane full of hen parties dressed in pink cowboy hats and a discussion about the visual treasures that can be found by exploring our city centre’s taxi ranks in the early hours of Sunday morning, a bell went off in our heads. Or rather lots of them. If ever a competition was held to decide who wore the weirdest outfits ever seen in Inverness, the Basque Region’s Joaldunak Marchers, those strange creatures that performed at last year’s Inverness Highland Games would be in a class of their own. Dressed in sheepskin jackets, with huge copper bells roped around their waists that they would rhythmically jangle in unison at the drop of one of their huge pointy colourful hats; these folks brought the streets of Inverness to a complete halt whenever they appeared. One of the great things about inviting folk to a city as friendly as Inverness is that you never know where it might lead and following the screening of a TV documentary about the Basques visit to our Games, the Basque Regional Government decided that they would like to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Inverness Highland Games for themselves. So the INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES are going on tour for the first time since it was founded in 1822 and over 100,000 spectators are expected to enjoy a taste of what we have to offer in Pamplona on October 17th. Our Games Committee is sending down HIGHLAND DANCERS, the HIGHLAND YOUTH PIPES AND DRUMS BAND, THE CALEDONIAN CANAL CEILIDH TRAIL BAND complete with traditional Gaelic singers and musicians, Kilted HEAVIES and one of our favourite emerging bands the GROUSEBEATER SOUND SYSTEM from the west coast. As if that wasn’t enough, meeting our team down there will be THE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS and the Heavies from the Belgian, German, Dutch, Japanese and Australian Highland Games Association. The Inverness contingent has been invited to be part of the NAFARROA OINEZ FESTIVAL which is held every year to raise funds for the Basque language schools as the guests of Nazioen Mundua, the multi-community organisation from across the Basque region who arrived in Inverness last year to raise awareness of Basque language and culture by performing a mix of rural sports, music and dance. The festival site stretches across seven kilometres of park and comprises five huge arenas, with the one staging the Pamplona Highland Games likely to be the centre of attraction. The only thing that we can imagine that is weirder than the Joaldunak Marchers walking through the streets of Inverness would be having them combining with the Highland Youth Pipes and Drums Band to play an up tempo version of Scotland the Brave through the streets of Pamplona. WHO SAID THERE WAS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN?

THEATRE > DRAMA

THEATRE

INTERIORS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 08 & Sat 09 Oct

C

o-presented by Vanishing Point and Napoli Teatro Festivals Italia this gives you the chance to experience the space of the OneTouch in an entirely original way. The front of the stage is a massive glass window, behind which the events of the play take place, but you don’t get

to hear what the characters are saying themselves, instead having to rely on the narrator. So, as you see a group of friends gathering for a meal in a cosy room, it’s the narrator who tells you about the stories and secrets being unfurled behind the glass. Inspired by Nobel prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck’s astonishing play, Interior, this is a bewitchingly intense affair and a welcome sign that Eden Court is prepared to put on theatre that steps outside traditional staging. This one could be very special indeed.

THE TOBACCO MERCHANT’S LAWYER @ Eden Court OneTouch, Mon 01 Nov After the recent examination of Scottish history in Caledonia, here’s another look back, this time to the late 18th century when the booming wealth of Glasgow’s trade was deeply linked to tobacco and, with an American war looming, suddenly found its economic security mad rather precarious. Against this backdrop this play focuses on one Glasgow resident, the splendidly monikered Enoch Dalmellington. His concerns aren’t with tobacco however, but with the marrying off of his dour daughter Ephemia, being able to afford his pew at church and Mistress Zapata’s scurrilous predictions about what Glasgow will be like in 2010.

SUBSIST @ Bike Shed, Merkinch, Thu 21 Oct - Sun 24 Oct An interesting show at Merkinch’s excellent Bike Shed being performed over four nights. Suitably intense for the size of the space it explores the behaviour of the characters and their power struggle after an apocalyptic event (involving zombies!) with a different ending each night. Tickets are £5 and just £15 for anyone who wants to go and see all four performances.

THEATRE > COMEDY > Armstrong & Miller, Ardal O’Hanlon & more... COMEDY There were only three dozen people at Josie Long s Ironworks show last month, but in the (underused) room upstairs on a Sunday night it was a truly magnificent stand-up show, intimate enough to provide the real seat-of-the-pants thrill that great comedy is supposed to be about. Even when her routine began to fall apart towards the end, it only served to emphasise how deceptively well constructed everything that had gone before had been. Her shortlisting for the top prize at Edinburgh was obviously well deserved. That someone with such a buzz about them could only attract a relatively small audience though shows the extent to which the comedy circuit is suffering much of the same malaise as its musical equivalent, with the big blockbuster shows taking away from smaller (and invariably far more entertaining) performances. The upstairs space at Ironworks would make a perfect venue for a free weekly comedy night (especially if something could be done to keep drink prices down) and it would be interesting to see if there s enough of a regular audience to keep something like that going. The only problem might be comedy overload because, as this month s roster of visiting funny folk proves, even up here we re getting spoiled for choice. While it s unlikely that Ms Long s engaging performance will be bettered this year, here s who s lining up to make us chuckle.

LEE NELSON’S WELL GOOD SHOW @ Ironworks, Sat 12 Oct You might be familiar with Nelson from his BBC3 show and presumably will have already made up your mind about whether his Ali G-meets-kids-TV-presenter character is tickling your funny bone. Live, the show is apparently rather edgier and more satisfying than the TV version suggests with a welter of good reviews picked up already, so he might be worth checking out.

ARDAL O’HANLON @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 05 Oct Way back in Victorian times a hundred issues ago, Ardal O Hanlon was on the cover of the dummy version of the first ICA, his visit to town a rare chance for Invernesians to witness a proper comedy star off the telly up close and personal. As we ve said though, such opportunities aren t really as rare anymore, so to pull the crowds the comedians are going to have draw on good old fashioned talent. And it s something Ardal has by the bucketload. His stand-up shows are always excellent- as proved last time he visited Eden Court in 2007-with neat observations and refreshing self-effacement making for a fine night out.

GREG DAVIES: FIRING CHEESEBALLS AT A DOG @ Ironworks, Thu 07 Oct You ll have seen Greg on TV as the semi-psychopathic teacher in The Inbetweeners, although he s built his comedy reputation as part of We Are Klang. His latest show, again shortlisted for the top prize in Edinburgh came out of a period of ennui where he found himself launching said comestibles at a canine, developing into a thoroughly enjoyable discourse on life, relationships and all that malarkey. Very, very funny and often touching in the way that great comedy should be.

ROB DEERING @ Ironworks, Wed 20 Oct Back in the seventies there was something of a tradition of comedians with guitars, although you always hoped they d never get round to singing self-consciously wacky numbers. More recently Tim Minchin and Bill Bailey have used other instruments to suggest there might be some mileage in comic song and Deering s take on the whole thing has been just as acclaimed, even garnering the description a one man comedy Woodstock . What can we expect? The man himself says this is a brand new show, the first since feminist classic Boobs 2008 in 2008, and my first national tour since Charmageddon the year before that. It promises to be my most honest, revealing and showy-offy.

GILDED BALLOON COMEDY CIRCUIT @ Eden Court, Sun 24 Oct The one regular opportunity in town to catch up and coming comedians rather than those undertaking juggernaut national tours. This month s line up includes Elvis McGonnagal, Bruce Morton and the excellent Jo Jo Sutherland. 48

ARMSTRONG & MILLER @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 26 Oct This one s been advertised for about a year so some of the initial excitement about the duo bringing their TV show to the stage has begun to wear off. And characters like the street-talking airmen and fruity Flanders and Swan pastiche, Brabbins and Fyffe have maybe lost some of their water-cooler contemporary resonance, but the quality of their material and comic abilities should ensure that they can pull of the transition from small screen to stage with some aplomb.

ED BYRNE @ The Talla Nan Ross, Kingussie, Fri 29 Oct Good to see the laconically inventive Byrne taking his show to some of the lesser-visited places in the country, meaning if you want to witness his endlessly inventive musings, you ll have to make a trip to Kingussie. It ll be more than worth it. For details phone 01540 662061

JIM JEFFERIES-ALCOHOLOCAUST @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 30 Oct As the title of the show suggests, Jefferies is very much in the uncompromising tradition and you can guarantee that, like Jerry Sadowitz, there ll always be something there to offend every single person in the audience at one time or another during his show. There ll also be some spectacularly well-constructed routines, plenty of random bile and more reasons to see why he s been such a hit everywhere from Edinburgh to his native Australia. How much he s like his stage persona in real life remains open to debate, but under the spotlight he s certainly not afraid to offend. Which could quite possibly be a very good thing indeed.

JOHN HEGLEY: THE ADVENTURES OF MONSIEUR ROBINET @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 31 Oct Tucked away at the end of the month comes a real gem in the form of John Hegley, the only man who can give John Cooper Clarke a run for his money in the stand-up poetry stakes. Though he has a devoted following and respect from his peers, he s never been granted his own TV show though you can almost imagine it in your head. And probably all the more so after this show full of surreal stories about a mythical small-town Gallic hero with a dog called Chirac. It s suitable for anyone over seven and we re promised a poem about a nontalking parrot and animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief. That s entertainment.

THEATRE > DANCE CIRQUE DE GLACE: EVOLUTION @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 12- Sat 16 Oct

Y

ou can’t beat a bit of dancing on ice. And unlike the distinctly underwhelming affair that sometimes graces Falcon Square, when Eden Court ice over

the Empire stage it’s an impressive place to witness the swish of blade on frozen water. They last iced the stage a couple of years back and now they’re doing it again for a show that combines dazzling ice dance from the internationally renowned Russian Ice Stars with the sort of spectacle made famous by Cirque du Soleil. Creative director Julian Deplidge says the show, which brings to life the story of the creation of the Earth, man’s evolution and his journey to the limits of technology, features world class skaters. “These are some of the best ice skaters there are. Many are world class performers from the Olympics. As well as that our choreographer was responsible for the opening ceremony at the Winter Olympics and our lighting designing did the lighting for the closing ceremony at the Beijing Olympics. “We have a very, very talented and creative team.” And if you’re down the front you’ll get the chance to witness up close the remarkable talents of the company, perhaps inspiring you to try a triple salko of your own next time you hit the rink. Should be great.

KATHAKALI @ Eden Court OneTouch, Mon 04 Oct

T

he second time in a couple of months that people have had the chance to experience the wonders of the ancient Indian art of Kathakali, a stunning combination of dance, drumming, drama and gesture that combines to tell stories passed down through the generations. The

Kala Chethena Kathakali Company was founded back in 1987 and presented workshops, demonstrations and small scale performances in the UK to observe how Kathakali could be made accessible to as many people as possible whilst maintaining its ancient cultural heritage. Two decades later they’re firmly established as the finest company around, with an international touring base in, of all places, Southampton. For this tour they’re welcoming back the great Padmasree Kalamandalam Gopi and other top international artists from India, supported by an ancient dance ritual, accompanied by drummers, to perform amongst the audience and create the magical atmosphere of Kerala.

SCOTTISH BALLET: GEOMETRY AND GRACE @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 08 & Sat 09 Oct Dance fans are certainly well catered for this month and this production from Scottish ballet comes with a host of great reviews. 36 dancers, three groundbreaking choreographers and a trio of distinctive pieces make for what should be a thrilling programme. Kicking off with Scenes De Ballet from revered Royal Ballet choreographer Frederick Ashton, you’ll experience a sophisticated work with couture-inspired tutus, a Stravinsky score and hints of 1940’s Broadway glamour. Next is a piece by San Francisco Ballet choreographer Val Caniparoli set to chamber scores by Uzbekistani composer Elena Kats Chernin, the night concluding with Ashley Page’s award-winning Fearful Symmetries. The latter, with a score by John Adam, takes inspiration from the painters of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement, evoking images of both bustling American cities and wide open spaces. A perfect counterpoint perhaps to the art of Ed Ruscha at IMAG. Synchronicity we call it.

WATCH IT! @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 26 Oct A dynamic double bill from Room 2 Manoeuvre performed by acclaimed choreographer and break dancer Tony Mills. Fusing break dance, physical theatre, film and animation, it was a big hit at Edinburgh Fringe in 2009 and should bring dance to an audience that might not previously have thought about checking out such a show. Mills will also be leading a Hip Hop/Contemporary Dance workshop on Sun 24 Oct which will mix styles and moves to create a short piece which will be performed before the Tuesday show.

DELHI DANCE WEEK @ Eden Court, Mon 11-Thu 14 Oct The Commonwealth Games are kicking off soon in Delhi and the screening of the Flag Handover provides the conclusion to a four day festival of dance at Eden Court. Participants will learn all kinds of dance moves and styles and will work on a finale showcase in the OneTouch which will be transformed into a “cool dance cafe with a jazz bar ambience.”Nice. The Delhi Dance Week is part of the Let’s Get Scotland Dancing initiative which aims to get people involved in the activity at local level. For more details of the week’s events, see www.eden-court.co.uk

THEATRE > MUSICALS > Hannah, Carmen & The Bookie... HIGH SCHOOL ROCKS! @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 19 Oct, 2pm & 6.30pm How long before Glee jumps the shark? Quite some time yet we’ll warrant and while its popularity remains ascendant there’s always going to be an audience eager to participate in the glassy-eyed abandon. Two shows in one day here suggests that they’re expecting plenty of folk who can think of nothing better than to bop along to the best bits from High School Musicals 1,2 and 3, Hannah Montana, Camp Rock, Jonas Brothers and the aforementioned Glee. Oh good. www.highschoolrocks.co.uk

CARMEN @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 01 & Sat 02 Oct There are more top tunes here than even High School Rocks could have come up with and a scorching storyline that would knock most current soaps into a cocked hat. For this production Scottish Opera, under the direction of Ashley Dean, have relocated the action to 1960s Spain under Franco, giving a whole new layer to proceedings, with oppressed women, ghettoised gypsies and black market smuggling providing the backdrop to a doomed love between the eponymous heroine and soldier Don Jose. This production will be sung in English which makes it the perfect opportunity for any newcomers to opera to experience its full, passionate glory.

<< THE BOOKIE! VEGAS COMES TO SCOTLAND @ Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 21 & Fri 22 Oct A quirky delight in the form of a new musical from Cumbernauld Theatre Company, written by Douglas “Decky Does A Bronco” Maxwell. Set in the small town of Quarry, it’s all about a smalltime bookie finding a self-made millionaire vowing to build a casino and turn the place into the Vegas of Scotland. Tears, tantrums and triumphs ensue, along with some sparkling songs. Should be a hoot. www.eden-court.co.uk

1EATING OUT:

The Review: NUMBER 27 27 CASTLE STREET INVERNESS 01463 241999 A funny few days for Inverness as the summer tourist season comes to a close. First we get our very own mini BP oil disaster in the river that stretches for, oh, at least a metre, necessitating a raggedy floating protective shield that may well still be there by the time you read this. Then the water level on the Ness suddenly goes so low that you could possibly skip across from one side to the other across the revealed rocks without even getting your ankles wet. Are the two events connected? Did someone pull the plug out a week too early? Is all the water used up for another year? Fairly soon we’re going to have to start demanding answers. Adding to the general sense of unease, the weather starts doing that random thing where it behaves like your TV just

after the digital signal’s gone all wonky. Sun, rain, rain, rain, sun, hail, rain, ye Gods it’s going to start pixellating in a minute. At times it feels like we’re living on the set of some sort of recreation of The Truman Show or Wizard Of Oz, our entire existence defined by “them” in the control gallery as chirpy Highlanders in a madefor-tourism reality show. Perhaps someone left off the “Wizard” bit on the schedule and has decided to recreate the gritty prison drama “Oz” by mistake. That would certainly explain the drug-sniffing dogs welcoming rail visitors to the city and the out-of-the-blue incidents of numpty violence that leave at least one local staggering around town in an England shirt with a bandage round his bleeding head, a victim of a biffing rather than any tribute to ICT gaffer Terry Butcher. Is it all the work of Rock Ness refugees who’ve been ensconced up here for the summer and are only now

coming out blinking into the light like Viet Cong who haven’t realised the war’s over? That violence is still in the air as we roll up outside NUMBER 27 in Castle Street for lunch. A coach pulls up in the street and off pour a couple of dozen tourists who, judging by their bravely predictable sartorial choices (Operation Free World sweatshirts, comfy expensive slacks, non-branded white trainers) hail from USA, USA, USA and have come over all excitable at the sight of the castle, presuming it to be a relic of ancient times. Later on of course, their enthusiasm for the structure will be casually obliterated when they learn it’s positively modern by Highland standards and realise we’re the only city on earth that sourly refuses to allow visitors inside such a place, but for now they’re giddy with joy, gathering in a mass on the pavement to snap such a proud skyline symbol. Alas, they’ve reckoned

57

without a bunch of wiry Neds in grubby Gio Goi hoodies who, Irn Bru in hand, are embarking on one of those walking-reallyfast-to-nowhere-in-particular missions that occupy so much of their time. And they’re having no truck with any standing about business. Oh no, not while there are streets to traverse. Their leader carves through the startled Americans, brooking no dissent. “Get out of the f***ing way, you f***ing barmpots!” And that job at the Inverness Tourist Board disappears over the horizon just that little bit faster than even he does. The tourists regroup, still grinning, but even staunch self-belief can’t hide the first shade of disappointment cast across their faces. Fortunately we’re perfectly placed to nip inside Number 27 before having to witness any kind of irrevocable breakdown in that Special Relationship, though we’ll warrant Hank and Betty won’t be numbering their first glimpse of Inverness among the highlights 60

of their trip to Yurp. The interior of Number 27 is a welcome haven from all the hoo-ha outside. Billing itself as a gastro pub, it’s fortunately not forgotten that the “pub” element of such a description is just as important as culinary aspirations. It’s still recognisably a local where you could pop in for a pint, smartened up with neat, understated furniture and a large front window that grants the space an airy, relaxing feel. At the back there’s more of a restaurant “proper” with a more intimate ambience. Even the welter of Vettriano prints on the wall are nicely chosen, only spoilt by the presence of incongruous adverts for B&Bs. Jack may be a populist, but his slinky ladies aren’t going to get involved in any fantasy scenarios that involve the prospect of a full Scottish breakfast included in the price at a gaff just round the corner. First off, big ups to both the chap who seats us and takes our order and the waitress who brings our food, both of whom have managed to get that balance between friendliness

and intrusiveness right, just as helpful in giving out directions to out-of-towners as they are doing the jobs they’re paid for. It might seem like a trivial observation, but it makes a difference and has to be applauded. Though obviously not out loud when you’re dining undercover. The lunchtime menu is a stripped down version of the evening one (although, curiously, Caesar Salad is spelt right at night but as “Ceaser” at lunchtime), but there are still plenty of appealing options, including that rarity, a veggie option that sounds as appealing as anything else on the menu, in the form of a Mushroom and Butternut Squash Pie. On a point of principle, I resist it, obviously, but it’s heartening to see it there. My starter is Salt and Chilli Calamari and right from the off it shows that the place is capable of turning out great grub. The squid rings are encased in a lovely crispy tempura batter, served with rocket salad and a sparky mayonnaise, the whole looking

as good as it tastes. My companion’s Chicken Strips in Sweet Chilli sauce are served with noodles and a minty yoghurt dip that works well. It’s a good start. For my main I’m tempted by the daily specials on the blackboard that include Venison Sausages and Mash and Chicken in a Mustard Cream Sauce, plumping instead for a Steak Burger with Bacon and Cheese. It’s a nice enough burger, crispy on the outside and still moist within, but far too dense to suggest that it involved anything like being made from scratch. It would be nice to know that there’s somewhere in town that will make a burger by hand (and perhaps there is- tell us if you do!), but this one certainly tastes nice enough. Serving it between two slices of ciabatta, however, is a pointless gesture towards sophistication that disregards exactly how great an invention the burger bun is in the first place. Accompanying hand-cut kettle chips (what exactly is a “kettle chip”?) are OK and the coleslaw fine for those who like that sort of thing. It’s not bad, but a bit of a letdown after the starter. My companion is rather more satisfied by his Fish and Chips. The same chips are served with a piece of fish the size of a whale that’s adjudged perfectly cooked, the batter retaining crispness all over and succulent inside. Whoever is in the kitchen is obviously a dab hand with takes on tempura and this is a simple dish done very well indeed. It’s accompanied by a well made tartare sauce with a fine gherkin and caper flavour. And costing under two quid more than a fish supper from a takeaway. A winner. As regular readers will know by now, we’ve spent rather too much time than is perhaps entirely healthy exploring the many and varied types of Sticky Toffee Pudding on offer at restaurants

around town, so it’s always pretty obvious that with that fare at the very top of the dessert menu it’s going to be requested almost as a knee jerk reaction. Sad to say, it’s not about to be vying for Champions League qualification in our unofficial table - we’ve got charts and everything - being rather too dry (to the extent that it would be more suitably billed as “cake”) and drenched in an oversweet sauce that has very little of the sticky or toffee elements that are pretty much entry-level requirements. Far better is my companion’s Baileys Cheesecake with Maltesers Ice Cream. The ice cream itself is unusual enough (and very nice too), but the cheesecake reinvents the dish entirely, served as almost a Swiss Roll/roulade. Is this some new EU directive that we haven’t been told about yet? Quite how you go about constructing such a thing without it falling apart is a mystery, but the chef pulls it off and the taste is tremendous. Swivel on that Mr Heston so-called Blumenthal. All in all, a good lunch that takes basic dishes and does them very well, presented with some style and served by friendly staff. And ultimately, that’s what it’s all supposed to be about. Outside, as we leave an American lady of a certain age is having her photo taken. Sporting a freshly bought Tam O’ Shanter which gives her the air of an elegant Krankie, she’s posing for a pic that the folk back home are going to adore. Perhaps later on she’ll pop into Number 27 for dinner, where she’ll get to eat some nice food in pleasant surroundings with welcoming staff. “Inverness is good,” she’ll say and the badmannered Neds will be forgotten. Who’s the barmpot now? Total for 2 (exc. drinks) 33.60

For many years, parabens have been considered safe, both in the UK and overseas, as they are virtually non-toxic. Studies have found that the biggest risk from parabens seems to be from the use of products that require a prolonged exposure to skin, such as skin creams and facial lotions. The longer that the parabens are on the skin, the more opportunity there is for parabens to be absorbed. When used in skin care products, parabens are absorbed directly into the blood stream. There are many concerns from different types of parabens, one has been linked to premature signs of ageing, ironically this compound is commonly found in products designed to fight signs of ageing. Some tests have indicated that parabens have caused an increase in oestrogen which can possibly affect the male and female reproductive organs.

Minerals – rather than being oil or petroleum based, true mineral cosmetics are made from earthen minerals, milled to a very fine powder. Unlike traditional cosmetics, which coat the skin with a fine layer of film, mineral make up allows your skin to breathe and function naturally. High quality mineral cosmetics should not clog pores, and should feel like you have no make up on. It should not contain any synthetic or irritating ingredients such as alcohol, artificial fragrance, mineral oil, talc or petroleum.

up strongly again in August. Sales for the month were up by a very healthy 28%, compared with August 2009. However, supply is still running ahead of demand, with a corresponding increase of 34% in the number of properties coming onto the market.

HOUSING MARKET: Locally and Nationally, it’s still more a buyers than sellers market

It remains more a buyer’s market at the moment with a wider choice of properties – around twice the number HSPC had at the start of this year, but demand is still limited by the difficulty some buyers are having in obtaining mortgages.

House sales in the Highlands and Islands returned to the growth they had demonstrated in the first half of this year, according to figures for HSPC. Sales growth in the first six months of the year faltered slightly in July, but have picked

In the circumstances, therefore, it

is perhaps not surprising that the average house prices continue to be squeezed. At £171,775 the average Highland home was down 3% on August 2009, with the rolling quarterly average down 5%. Although this follows a similar pattern to the UK situation, the local market does not appear to have been so badly hit. The latest RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) Housing Market Survey reports that prices across the UK have continued to fall this summer, due to the increase in properties coming on the market and a drop in the number of enquiries.

the average house price in July was the lowest since 2003, with sales down 27%. New home sales actually fell to the lowest figure since records began in 1963.

This confirms that there has been something of a north-south divide in the UK housing market during this recession, with houses in the north having suffered less than those in the south.

By comparison the UK and the North of the country, in particular, seems almost buoyant. There are also indictions of growing demand to help lift prices. One major UK lender has reported a 5% increase in mortgage lending during July.

This is reflected in the overall UK figures. Nationally, one of the major UK mortgage lender reports that the average UK house price this summer, at £167,425, is down 16% down on the peak in August 2007.

“In our area there are some really positive signs to suggest a growth in demand,” Sarah Woodcock says. “In August we have saw an 11% increase in enquiries through

Internationally many countries, notably the USA, Ireland and Spain, have been much more seriously affected. In the USA

our website. Hopefully this will be reflected in sales over the coming months.” HSPC’s findings tally with the UK Residential Market Forecast, whose analysts forecast that the UK property market should grow to become stable in 2011, before a solid recovery in demand, activity and prices during 2012. Given that the housing market is a strong indicator of overall health of the economy, that has to be encouraging news, both locally and nationally.

WAR is a fact.

You can doubt, disbelieve and deny

there were world wars but the thousands of crosses spotting the cemeteries of the world cry out these were wars. Facts are stubborn things.

Some people think because they do not believe in Hell that they shut the door and put out the fire, but the stubborn fact remains, there is a Hell. All reason and revelation says men like Hitler did not get their just punishment here. Surely these will not get the same fate after this life as the godly, holy people who accept the Saviour and live for Him. There must be a place for punishing sin after this life. Hell is that place says God. Facts are stubborn things. “In Hell he (the rich man) lift up his eyes, being in torments.” Luke 16:23. “This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire.” Revelation 20:14-15.

1KEN KELMAN: Tea leaves a stain...

I

t appears to be Autumn again in the Highland capital. You can always tell; leaves start to fall from the trees, shops get Christmas decorations in and the emollient dispensers in the Eastgate move back to the sunnier climes of their homeworld. Leaving us free to peruse the shops for tinsel and crackers without having to worry about someone grabbing our hands and thrusting them into a bowl of cold cream. I have to be brave here and admit that I’ve just looked up the plural of ‘leaf’. It was one of those situations when I wrote ‘leaves’ down and repeated it to myself a couple of times it suddenly didn’t make sense, it seemed that they’re ought to be at least a different spelling. But no, ‘leaves’ is the plural of ‘leaf’ and that’s the end of the matter, which makes the sentence “tea leaves a stain if you spill it” sound a bit odd. Or maybe it’s just me. I was in the Eastgate recently and had to walk past the ‘emollients’, one of them asked me if she could ‘ask me a question’… “No” I replied and carried on my way, then realised I’d granted her wish by answering and this upset me far more than it should have. There is no way of answering the question “can I ask you a question?!” in the negative without being rude and just ignoring the questioner. Though, of course, there is always the option of being smug and saying something like “you just have”. I was actually on my way to the bookshop as I’d just finished reading The Charming Quirks of Others - the latest Isabel Dalhousie mystery - and needed something else to occupy my brain lest it start thinking thoughts of its own. Problem was it was a Thursday which meant it could be four days before another Alexander McCall-Smith novel would be published. It’s not easy for me to pick reading material since I place so many restrictions on myself. In general I steer clear 74 of crime novels (except those in the

Aberystwyth series and any by Christopher Fowler), obviously the entire Richard and Judy book club top 100 is out… and likewise any book which proclaims to be “now a major motion picture”. Why ‘major’ ? Do you think we’ll ever see a book proudly stating “now a fairly minor third rate arts-house type film”? Actually that gives me an idea, if I ever write a book, before it gets published, I’m going to film a version of it on a twenty-five quid digital camera and post it on line. Then I can put stickers on the cover boasting “now a crappy out-of-focus, way too dark, and oddly shaky film, at least three people have viewed on You Tube.” I settled on ‘C’ in the end, a Booker Prize short-listed novel by Tom McCarthy. It’s only draw-back being it has little italicized extracts from poems interspersed through the prose, which for some reason I have never been able to read when I come across them in a novel. I’m hoping that this complete inability to understand even the simplest stanza of poetry when it appears amongst other text will one day be known as Kelman’s Syndrome. KEN

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (THE FIRST SEQUENCE) (18)

Director David Lynch

Truly one-of-a-kind, this twisted biological horror film confidently goes where few films have dared to go. This sick vision of a demented surgeon (Dieter Laser) obsessed with creating a ‘human centipede’ of his own is sure to join Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface in the horror pantheon.

A true classic of American cinema, Blue Velvet is quintessential David Lynch. As with his cult TV classic, Twin Peaks, Lynch exposes the dark underbelly of small town, cherry pie loving, America. Arguably the late Dennis Hopper’s best acting performance; he is unforgettably disturbing in his role as Frank Booth.

SHONA IS CUT ABOVE THE REST AS SHE OPENS BARBERSHOP A barber who worked in salons for 20 years has fulfilled her dream by opening her own barbershop.. Shona Stuart (standing) and Ewanna Ewart.

Shona Stuart, 36, first started training as a barber when she was sixteen. Earlier this year she decided the time was right to start her own business and sought help through the Business Gateway. Inverness Barbers based in Post Office Avenue has been open since July this year and with business already exceeding Shona’s early expectations, she is delighted with her move into entrepreneurship.

She said: “Over the last 20 years I have been both employed and self employed but never had my own shop or managed staff before. I love the variety in conversation from day to day and I enjoy a challenge. I’ve always known I was capable of being more than just an employee so decided to go for it early this year.

“I have lived and worked in Inverness for six years and have found the people here to be laid back and friendly. This is a great place to start a business. My standards are high so I only hire barbers with many years of experience. Our shop is spacious and welcoming with a music theme throughout. We also have a much needed kids corner. The response so far has been excellent with an extremely high percentage of customers returning. In the future I would like to see both staff and clientèle numbers grow.” Shona approached her local Business Gateway office and gained vital knowledge that helped her as she turned her dream into a reality. She added “Even with all my years experience as a barber I still needed advice from Business Gateway. The advice I received was excellent, your adviser is just a phone call or email away. I was also grateful to receive a start up grant which helps with costs such as marketing.” Mark MacKintosh, Regional Development Officer, Business Gateway Inverness office said: “Shona has received a variety of help that has helped her start up her own barbers shop and run it successfully. Not only did we help her to finalise her business plan but she also benefited from a Start-Up grant. Shona has already made her mark on the city centre and we hope she has continued success.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses.
