ART Scottish Greats The acclaimed Scottish painter JOHN BELLANY [1] who died in 2013 is garnering lots of attention right now with rave reviews for a newly released book. “The Restless Wave” by his wife Helen about their life together here and in London and Italy, so the timing is perfect for the BECOMING BELLANY event taking place in the INVERNESS VICTORIAN MARKET from MAY 27–JUN 30. A celebration of the artist on the 30th anniversary of his Bonjour Professor Calne [2] paintings, the public are invited to “encounter Bellany” by participating in the repainting of one Bonjour Professor Calne work and engage in a range of social and creative opportunities inspired by themes in his oeuvre. It’s educational outreach with an emphasis on fun and an innovative use of the Victorian Market. There is always new work in KILMORACK GALLERY on the first Saturday of the month and in May it includes fresh paintings by KIRSTIE COHEN [3], ALAN MCGOWAN [5] and ANN ORAM [4]. Kirstie Cohen is well-known to visitors of Kilmorack Gallery. This is her twenty-first year showing there and her latest paintings further explore the sublime, powerful and psychological elements of landscape. Edinburgh-based Alan McGowan is in a league of his own when it comes to painting the human figure. Over the last few years he has experimented with bronze sculpture, bringing his knowledge of the anatomy and economy to work in three dimensions. In May Kilmorack is showing new bronzes as well as drawings. Ann Oram is one of the UK’s leading exponents of a very Scottish way of using colourful and expressive paint. New work in Kilmorack over May includes still lives as well as winter landscapes.

WAYMARKERS, 30 Apr - 25 May, by Artist – Ian Barr is the third in a series of exhibitions at UPSTAIRS by New Art Group Black Isle Abstract. Ian presents art-works which all relate to simple objects found in the landscape. “Each work is derived from items that somehow connote the idea of moving from one place to another,” says Ian. “These might be well-recognised routes marked by signposts or mile-stones. They might be more metaphorical journeys such as those conveyed by grave-stones, standing stones or shrines. Equally, they may originate from natural features such as stones, boulders or rock outcrops that provide reference points for travelers. Whatever the context, the objects have conjured visual possibilities and

VICTORIAN MARKET

BECOMING BELLANY, 27 May - 30 June, A public repainting of Bellany’s “Bonjour Professor Calne “ to mark the 30th anniversary of Bellany’s original. The work is significant as it documents Bellany’s recovery from a life saving liver transplant operation that heralds a lazaruslike personal renaissance and is an early example of his astonishing artistic rejuvenation until his death in 2013. The 35 day project is the brainchild of Beauly artist Adrian Eaton who states; “The event is the culmination of my B.A.(hons) Painting course with the Open College of the Arts. Instead of a traditional degree exhibition, I felt that sharing the work that had been so influential in shaping the artist I’ve become would be a more satisfying and appropriate conclusion to both my studies and my engagement with Bellany.” The event aims to encourage a range of creative and social engagement opportunities through public participation along with educational outreach inspired by the big themes in Bellany’s painting. The event is free to the public between 12-4 pm daily. To book a visit call 07709 285 266.

Yolo Solo. MAJOR NEW RELEASES The most in-your-face release this month will be the return of RYAN REYNOLDS’ deliciously naughty antisuperhero in DEADPOOL 2 [1] (Vue 16 May). Yes, he’ll swear, yes he’ll aim to offend and yes, he’ll break the fourth wall repeatedly—but that’s why we love him. His nemesis in this is time-travelling cybermutant Cable, confusingly (for some of us) played by JOSH BROLIN, who already exists in the Marvel universe as Thanos. But hey. Hopefully the screenwriters have sharpened their pencils and will be giving us an entertaining plot without flipping vehicles and protracted repeated climaxes—but we won’t be holding our breath... Bigger still will be the expectation surrounding SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY [2] (Vue 25 May)—a bold move for the SW canon, a Han Solo prequel! Thankfully, they haven’t made a CGI 20yr old Harrison Ford for us to lament, they’ve handed the reins to the likeable ALDEN EHRENREICH, with an equally appealing supporting cast—inc DONALD ‘Childish Gambino’ GLOVER, WOODY HARRELSON and EMILIA CLARKE. Less obvious to us are the potential pleasures of SHERLOCK GNOMES (Vue 11 May). Whether it’s the bad name, the current toxicity of Johnny Depp, or the bad taste left by the awful last series of Sherlock (!)—we just keep asking “Why!?”. But maybe you will love it. But you won’t.

LMRTM^ The biggest releases of last month pitch up at Eden Court this month for a chance for those that missed them or want to see them again, again. So re-acquaint yourselves with the slightly strange beast that is Spielberg’s READY PLAYER ONE [3] (18–22 May) and with the groaning-under-the-weight-of-its-own-stars Marvel über-climax, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR [4] (11– 17 May)—as we print, untested on a global audience, but likely to be quite popular, regardless. And MARTIN FREEMAN fans will love GHOST STORIES (11–15 May) from the popular stage-show. EC FILMS But as you know, Eden Court’s film programming is not all about bumchasing populist titles, it is about reflecting the best of global cinema providing muchneeded art nourishment to an audience far-flung from the kind of major city that more commonly provides for more artistic, more open minds. This month’s cornucopia of goodies includes titles new and old and home-grown and from distant climes—as usual. HELEN MIRREN and DONALD SUTHERLAND. Watchability itself as separates, but as a double, playing a couple throwing caution (and medical appointments) to the wind and setting out across the states in their campervan of the title, THE LEISURE SEEKER [5] (04–10 May), they’re surely unmissable. By comparison, what it might lack in star quality (with no offence meant to LILY JAMES, JESSICA BROWN FINLAY and MATTHEW GOODE), is compensated for in its title in THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY [6] (18–24 May), a true-ish story set in post-WWII occupation Guernsey. Another contrasting old v young pair of films are EDIE [7] and ON CHESIL BEACH [8] (both 25 May–02 Jun), the former starring SHEILA HANCOCK as the 83yr-old recent widow of the title heading to the Highlands to escape being placed in a home, the latter being the story of a young in-love couple in 1962 struggling with intimacy—with SAOIRSE RONAN, BILLY HOWLE, EMILY WATSON and ANNE-MARIE DUFF. She also appears in National Theatre’s NT LIVE: MACBETH [9], with RORY KINNEAR on 10 & 12 May). Talking of women taking control (and we were), a real highlight this month is FUNNY COW [10] (04–10 May), starring MAXINE PEAKE fighting to the top as a comedienne in the male-centric world of 1970s and 80s stand up. Marti Caine anyone? That is one of 3 Indie Pics—”the most exciting new and old films coming to Eden Court this month”—the others being LEAN ON PETE (18–24 May) about a 15yr old boy befriending an ageing and soon-to-be-slaughtered

13

^Last Month’s Releases This Month

and soon-to-be-slaughtered horse, and the 2001 classic GHOST WORLD (27 May) with THORA BIRCH and a breaking-out SCARLETT JOHANSSON on top form. That film in turn is part of this year’s EC 3 screenings for the 11th Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF), the others being THE FISHER KING (13 May) and GOOD WILL HUNTING (20 May). Finally, YOU, ME AND HIM (11–17 May) stars LUCY PUNCH, FAYE MARSAY and DAVID TENNANT as an unlikely trio of convenience...

VUE POSSIBLE RELEASES As Meryl Streep once said, “there’s always Doubt...”—and so it is predicting cinema chain film scheduling. These are all released nationally this month and so may appear at Vue: I FEEL PRETTY [11] (04 May) is AMY SCHUMER self-hating her way to showing us liberation lies within, (whoddathunkit?); LIFE OF THE PARTY [12] (11 May) in which MELISSA MCCARTHY music-montages her marriage up in smoke and goes back to college—and it’s funny when the large lady falls over; THE CURED (11 May) is David Freyne’s post-zombie, erm, zombie-horror with ELLEN PAGE; Wim Wenders’ SUBMERGENCE [13] (18 May) stars Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy in a tense, emotive thought-provoking romance; SHOW DOGS (25 May) is a mixed gift—imagine all your least fave cop stereotypes, only they’re dogs voiced by actors, and add in Vegas and WILL ARNETT, LUDACRIS, SHAQ, ALAN CUMMING and STANLEY TUCCI. Maybe we’ll laugh.

KIDS Bubbles, Beasts & Beats… We told you last month about the INVERNESS SCIENCE FESTIVAL [1] which runs from 27 APR–13 MAY, but here’s a reminder that it’s well worth checking out with all kinds of events, lectures and activities taking place around town. Highlight is the FAMILY FUN DAY at INVERNESS LEISURE on SAT 05 MAY from 12–4pm where you can delve into the magical world of all things scientific! Meet experts from the local area and take part in numerous activities involving sea, sky, dinosaurs, dolphins, bubbles, balloon racing cars and much more. Visit the community stands which show the science behind many different areas of our lives. With over 30 activity tables there is fun to be had 1 for all the family. Full programme at uhi.ac.uk/isf From science to nature and ANIMALS [2] at EDEN COURT on WED 09 MAY. As the title suggests, this show, created by GREG SINCLAIR, is all about our four legged friends, but also about our emotional response to them. Whether it’s the joy of delivering a new lamb with your own hands, the pain of losing your pet dog or the confusion of discovering your favourite cow is in love with a tractor (yes, really!), the production explores how animals help us figure stuff out. Using real and imagined stories collected from 6 year-olds, it interweaves live music, dance and film into a celebration of our unique relationship with our furry friends. The first Inverness edition of the kid-friendly rave, BIG FISH LITTLE FISH was a massive success, so no surprise that it’s back at IRONWORKS on SUN 20 MAY. The grown ups might actually be more excited than the kids as it’s headlined by the mighty ALEX PATERSON from The Orb who’ll no doubt be creating the perfect Ambient House atmosphere as the young uns explore play areas, facepainting, bubble machines, glowsticks and more. There’s also an optional, but fully encouraged, fancy dress theme – come as your favourite superhero, rockstar or movie bad guy. There’ll be plenty of local family interest with a trio of events at EDEN COURT on Fri 01 & Sat 02 Jun, in the annual PERFORMERS UK SHOWCASES [3]. First up on the Friday evening is the 2018 SENIOR SHOWCASE, for kids aged 9 right up to 18. Performers include Saturday School members and senior Tricks & Tumble classes as well as performances from the Junior and Senior Dance Crew and Choir. Saturday morning sees the MINIS SHOWCASE where the ‘Mini Musical Adventure’ is performed by 3 & 4 yr olds! Finally, that evening it is the turn of the JUNIOR SHOWCASE—featuring Saturday school members as well as the Junior Tricks & Tumble groups and RAD Ballet members—promising a great night of entertainment for all—with musical numbers that will get you singing in your seats and dancing in the aisles. Highland Talent On Show This is a slightly odd time of the year for music, with many of the really big names having finished their winter tours and retired to their mansions ahead of moneyspinning summer festival appearances—but that doesn’t mean we’re entirely deprived of good things to go out and see, with several dates well worth noting down in your diary, particularly by Highland musicians. Perhaps the most essential of all is 12 MAY when NEON WALTZ [1] play IRONWORKS. Their burgeoning popularity meant a smaller gig up here earlier in the year was postponed until now, with Ironworks a suitably large space to experience the Caithness lads at their most irresistibly expansive. While their elaborately cascading sound works perfectly well on record, they’re even better live and you get the feeling they’ll be going on to far bigger things in the year ahead. Catch them while you can. Prior to Neon Waltz IAIN MCLAUGHLIN was one of the Highlanders most likely to break big—and his songs certainly deserve a wider audience, but for now they’ll have to be experienced in a more intimate setting, as he and THE OUTSIDERS play gritty with THE FILTHY TONGUES at TOOTH & CLAW on 26 MAY. Meanwhile, new local talent is on show at IRONWORKS on 18 MAY when swaggery indie rockers PARK CIRCUS [2] play their first headline show at the venue with support from THE HUNT GARRISON COURT and THE CHOSEN LONELY HUNT, LONELY. Proving that creativity up here cuts right across genres, you’d also be well advised to check out HIGHLAND BATTLE LEAGUE [3] at MAD HATTERS on 18 MAY, the second instalment of a rap battle night that was a roaring success last time round, while if traditional sounds are more your bag, you can’t go wrong with the wonderful KRIS DREVER [4] playing EDEN COURT on 06 MAY. And EDEN COURT has plenty more to offer this month including: two of Europe’s leading acoustic guitarists, GIORGIO SERCI & JONNY PHILLIPS [5] (08 MAY); folk legends THE FUREYS celebrating their 40th anniversary on 26 MAY, a return visit to the Highlands by the extraordinary Mongolian collective ANDA UNION [6] (27 MAY), the enduringly brilliant UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN [7] (22 MAY) and a bona fide legend, singer TONY CHRISTIE [8] on 31 MAY. Finally some approving nods towards classical temptations in the form of MAXIMILANO MARTIN & FRIENDS at NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE (12 MAY), HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 27 MAY and, back at EDEN COURT on 29 MAY, SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE with a programme entitled Mozart By Numbers.

SPECIALS Books & Cars… We’ve been particularly well served for book festivals here in recent years, with Cromarty, Nairn and the fledgling Ness Book Fest all doing a tremendous job. This month sees a rather fine one in the form of the ULLAPOOL BOOK FESTIVAL taking place from 11–13 MAY and there are some interesting authors appearing. There’s an astute contemporary relevance to proceedings opened by a discussion with ANGUS ROXBURGH [1], the Sunday Times/BBC Russian Correspondent who wrote a book on Putin and should be able to offer some fascinating insights. Other authors at the fest include DENISE MINA [2], JANE HARRIS and ANNEMARIE MACDONALD, while you can also see actor/director DAVID HAYMAN [3] and catch musician SCOTT HUTCHISON from Frightened Rabbit, appearing with the awesome Scot poet, MICHAEL PEDERSEN [4] (who’s recent book Oyster, is illustrated by Hutchison), plus the live announcement of the winner of the Highland Book Prize. It’s a great festival in wonderful surroundings. Full details at ullapoolbookfestival.co.uk When it first started, the INVERNESS CLASSIC VEHICLE SHOW consisted of merely a few old jalopies parked outside Wetherspoons, but it’s grown to take over much of the city centre and should be bigger than ever when it returns on 12 MAY. You can expect to see everything from beautiful old 1930s cars to luxury modern vehicles displayed on Church St and the High St, plus even more in Falcon Square. A delight for petrolheads and nostalgic lovers of motoring’s Golden Age. Rather bigger vehicles on show at TRUCKNESS on 02 JUN at BOGBAIN FARM. There’s a certain brutal beauty to massive trucks and when they’re all lined up like they are here, they rarely fail to induce the desire to clamber inside and make for the wide open highways. Though just looking and gasping is probably a more sensible option.

Run For Good. The recent Inverness Half Marathon was a huge success, with a record number of entries and the fastest ever winning time, so expect an equally fine turnout for the INVERNESS RACE FOR LIFE at BUGHT PARK on 27 MAY, albeit with everyone dressed in pink to signify that it’s all in aid of beating cancer. It’s part of a nationwide enterprise bringing millions of women together to raise money and there are several options to take part in on the day. A 5k is great for all ages and you can run, jog or walk; the only thing that matters is that you’re part of it. Want to push yourself further? Join a 10k. Or take on Pretty Muddy, an obstacle course that sees women of all abilities crawl through tunnels, bounce on space hoppers and slip down mudslides. More details at raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org There are plenty of events with a more competitive edge this month and 12 MAY sees two of the most notable. The GLEN AFFRIC DUATHLON [1] is staged within the Glen Affric Nature Reserve - often described as Scotland’s most beautiful glen and as always follows the format of a run/bike/run event that is suitable for everyone. Not only will the experienced, even elite athletes find it challenging, but the environment also makes it a very rewarding experience for novices. The same day sees the AVIEMORE 100, a multi-discipline cycling challenge over 100km involving a road cycle section and followed by an off-road mountain bike stage. The route can be completed as a solo rider or you can easily team up with a pal with one rider taking on the road route followed by your teammate on the mountain bike route. See You In (Eden) Court It barely needs saying each month, but we’re going to anyway. EDEN COURT really is at the top of its game these days when it comes to providing entertainment for the people of the Highlands. Once again it comes up trumps in May with a fine array of shows that pretty much defines the notion of “something for everyone”. Biggest of the lot is LEGALLY BLONDE [1] running from 07–12 MAY. The original movie was a delight and the stage musical version promises to be just as enjoyable. Already a smash hit on Broadway and in the West End, this retelling of the pampered sorority sister who gets into Harvard Law School and outwits her detractors stars RITA SIMONS (Roxy in Eastenders), LUCIE JONES (who represented the UK at Eurovision as well as being a highly regarded musical actress) and BILL WARD (Corrie/Emmerdale). Should be a lot of fun. As should the trio of comedians coming to Eden Court. First up is PATRICK MONAHAN [2] on 11 MAY. A fine fellow, at the Happyness elegant footballer and regular turn Comedy Festival that used to brighten our summers, his new show REWIND SELECTOR 90S explores what life was like for teenagers in the 90s growing up with their basic technology and compares the current problems teenagers face, such as faulty phone charger leads, dabbing and whether they should Instagram their dinner or just eat it! That’s the second half of the show, the first half promising a club set and audience participation. Comedy of a rather stranger stripe comes from LIMMY’S VINES [3] on 20 MAY. in 2013 Limmy joined the short-video platform, Vine, recording hundreds of 6 second videos. And now he’s going to share them with you. Plus let you ask him questions about them. Expect to be both entertained and bracingly bewildered… FRED MACAULEY [4],, who plays Eden Court on 03 JUN is the most conventional of the three stand-ups coming our way, but there’s no denying his ability to spin a good yarn and, as a regular performer here, it’s always nice

to see him back.

ISLE OF LOVE [5],, at EDEN COURT on 18 & 19 MAY and ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL on 05 JUN is a bittersweet tale of love, loss, recovery and discovery, infused with the quirky lyrics and musical genius of ADAM ROSS from Randolph’s Leap. Written by Euan Martin and Dave Smith from award-winning theatre company Right Lines Productions it explores the beauty and restorative qualities of island life on the Hebrides and why people choose to visit, to stay, to leave and to return. A rather more sobering, though no less important show is A BRAVE FACE [6] at EC on 28 MAY. It explores Post Traumatic Stress, an unseen and often unrecognised injury of war, and the impact it can have on even the closest of families. With compassion and fearlessness, the acclaimed Vamos company brings its trademark, wordless, full mask style to a story that needs to be told. His observations have led him to success on television and radio, in such shows as QI, Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week To celebrate his 30 years of stand-up, Fred is back touring. His 2017 stand-up shows were legendary and in many reviews the shows were described simply as “A Masterclass”.

EATING OUT

The Fluke Culcabock Rd, Inverness 01463 220 957 Outside The Fluke there’s a sign saying “Tea & Coffee Available All Day. Or until such time it seems appropriate to have a beer”. It’s gently witty banter that give a clue to the vibe of one of the city’s most popular pubs, with those who’ve been there regularly singing its praises. That’s partly due to its location in Raigmore, a couple of miles from the centre of town, but close to the hospital, an industrial estate, army base and police station, ensuring a steady supply of customers. It’s also praised for its remarkably good value food, with the prospect of two meals for £8 just one of the attractions on offer. And it’s certainly bustling the day we visit, the clientele a mixture of obvious regulars and people who’ve just dropped in for lunch as well as one fellow, taking advantage of The Fluke’s dog-friendly policy, who’s brought along a beautiful Alaskan Malamute, one of those sled dogs the size of a small horse and which

is quietly enjoying being the centre It’s hard to go far wrong with this of attention. neo-classic of the pub menu, it seems a bit of a mistake to serve It’s a big place, converted from it in a narrow bowl rather than, an old fish market back in days of as illustrated in the photo on the yore (hence the name The Fluke) menu, on a wide plate. It makes with several connecting areas for all sorts of culinary engineering including a faux-library dining area issue, namely congealed cheese and screens to watch the footy, underneath a top-heavy affair. but despite its size there’s a nice Tastes nice enough though. homely atmosphere, making it one of the few pubs in town that Alas the same can’t be said for my genuinely feels like a “local”. starter of Garlic Prawns. As anyone who’s ever been to Spain will testify, And so to the food where some there’s nothing quite like your tough decisions are to be made, gambas a la plancha washed down mainly due to the sheer extent with a cold beer, the whole thing of the menu. There are plenty of heavy with garlic and elevating the your usual pub classics, plus an humble prawn to the food of kings. extensive range of burgers, steak Here however, they don’t even seem and sizzling platters as well as a to be seasoned, let alone introduced dozen other dishes just in case you to garlic, making for a taste-free still can’t make your mind up. pile of seemingly microwaved From the starters my pal has the crustaceans in a bland pool of House Fried Corn Nachos which melted butter. The accompanying come loaded with guacamole, slice of garlic bread is rather good, salsa, sour cream, jalapeños and but not enough to rescue a American cheese sauce. While rather disappointing dish.

For my main I’d been very keen on the delicious sounding Sizzling Lamb Kofte Kebab, but apparently it’s unavailable so in a moment of panic I plump for another of the sizzling skillet options, Mexican Messy Chicken. And messy certainly seems to be the operative word. Grilled chicken fillet is topped with chilli con carne, crushed tortilla, grated Cheddar cheese, guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños and fajita spiced corn with a bowl of chips on the side to ensure your stomach is completely filled.

elegance in my Mint Aero Sundae, one of four varieties of sundae on offer, including Black Forest and Honeycomb Explosion versions. It’s actually downright splendid, comprising of vanilla ice cream with Mint Aero bubbles, chocolate brownie pieces, fluffy cream, Belgian chocolate sauce and a wafer, all served in a proper old fashioned sundae glass. And so delicious that it’s polished off quick sharp. All in all a solid, if unspectacular meal, though the sundae was a standout. It could be that it’s stretching a little too far with some of the offerings, or that we made a mistake in not going for the more staple pub-grub dishes that probably make up the bulk of the orders, with the Mac and Cheese in particular rumoured to be top notch and plenty of praise for the steaks.

There’s no perceptible sizzle to the platter, but the chicken itself is perfectly moist and very tasty, even if the chilli con carne is slightly underwhelming. Everything being piled on top of each other doesn’t make for the most aesthetically pleasing of affairs and the taste of the whole thing does become rather homogenised, but the chips There’s certainly no arguing with are surprisingly good.
