ART New Spaces. There’s a long and illustrious history to the ART SOCIETY OF INVERNESS who are holding their Annual Exhibition [1] at INVERNESS TOWN HOUSE from 02–13 DEC. It was founded over 70 years ago and continues to provide all kinds of opportunities to artists, aspiring artists and those just interested in the visual arts. The membership is around 250, making the ASI one of the largest groups of its kind in the country. Members come from all over the Highlands and beyond, and include a wide spectrum of artists, from experienced professionals to leisure painters and beginners, so the exhibition should be well worth seeing. There’s another very good reason for attending and that’s the location. Finally, after years of work and some inventive use of cladding, the Town House has finally been unveiled in its fully restored glory and there’s no debating they’ve done a wonderful job. It’s a breathtaking transformation, the only downside of which is that it emphasises just how awful most of the buildings surrounding the architectural jewel in Inverness’ crown now look. Who remembers IG:LU? That top floor gallery in Church Street occupying a building that’s currently being repurposed as a Revolution bar, was one of the few spaces where young and up and coming artists could display their work, showcasing some great local talent. Apart from the occasional pop-up in the Victorian Market, nothing’s ever really come along to1offer the same opportunities, so it’s good to hear about the UPSTAIRS gallery, which seems to share a similar ethos. Based above HRI Munro architects in Academy Street, it offers Inverness City Centre exposure to new and established artists and welcomes applications to exhibit. Currently on show until 05 JAN is work by KATRIN MÄURICH, the exhibition entitled VOM AUFATMEN & VOM MUND DER SICH SELBER TRINKT [3] (or “Of sighed relief & the mouth that drinks itself”). Having spent year after year coming up to Scotland for long walking tours, Katrin finally did the right thing this summer and after 13 years in London moved to the Highlands. She says this move feels much more like a homecoming than resettlement. Katrin’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad but this will be her first show in Scotland. Gallery is open from 2pm - 4pm Mon to Fri. Find out more at upstairs.scot Also note Eden Court’s Winter Show, this year entitled REFLECTIONS [2].

Scrooges & Star Wars… SEASONAL FILMS: First things first, let’s get the seasonal stuff sorted for you. For those who debate annually which is the best of Alistair Sim’s 1951 Scrooge, Albert Finney’s 1970 take or Patrick Stewart’s 1999 A Christmas Carol, a new twist for you—THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS [3] (Vue 01 DEC), with CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER providing his own take on a ‘virtual’ Scrooge as we see Charles Dickens’ (DAN STEVENS) struggles to bring his classic tale to life—which he eventually does with the help of his own characters! Could be a new Christmas classic? However, if it’s established classics you want, look no further than Eden Court’s screenings of MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (17 DEC) and IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE [4] (EC 22–27 DEC). Wouldn’t be Christmas without ‘em... BOX-OFFICE GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE...: But what of the uber-big box office films? As is becoming the new tradition, it’s all about STAR WARS—this time Episode VIII, THE LAST JEDI [1] (Vue & EC 14 DEC)—you can insert your own couple of paragraphs about it here, but we’re pretty sure the rock-solid chemistry of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac with legend Mark Hamill and a final bow for Carrie Fisher make this a safe, safe bet. Fans note: catch Ep.7 the previous day at EC and Vue Ep.8 screenings start from 1 min past midnight! Two big, big super-hero movies come to Eden Court—the not-released-at-time-of-print DC behemoth, JUSTICE LEAGUE [2] (EC 29 DEC), and the can’t-recommend-it-highly-enough easy fun of THOR: RAGNAROK [5] (EC 01–07 DEC). We all know about bad sequels of good films— could JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE [6] (Vue 20 DEC) play the opposite way? Some knowing humour and solid comedic chops says maybe... Those who like to know exactly what they’re gonna get before they turn up will be on solid ground with kid-friendlies PADDINGTON 2 (EC 01–14 DEC) and generic animal animation FERDINAND (Vue 16 DEC), whilst slightly older fun will be found in PITCH PERFECT 3 [7] (Vue 20 DEC)—the usual suspects appear but the real star of the franchise is Elizabeth Banks… ICA TIPS (Five eclectically different films to see this month): So far, so safe—Christmas movies, blockbusters, family animated characters. But what if you’re adventurous? What if you like to be challenged? Well, under our film tree, there’s something for everyone, even you—so we’d like to suggest FIVE eclectically-different movies for you to get along to this month: First up, discomforting Norwegian supernatural horror/thriller, THELMA [8] (EC 01–07 DEC), which slowly reveals itself to have many layers—as much a coming of age LBGTQ fable as anything. How about some live theatre in the cinema? If you haven’t tried it yet, this may be the perfect opportunity for you. The very likeable Rory Kinnear stars in NT LIVE: YOUNG MARX [9] (EC 07 DEC), broadcast LIVE from The Bridge Theatre in London—it’s a smart comedy in which Kinnear stars as the eponymous genius Karl. His intellectual brilliance is not perhaps delivering him the lifestyle it might—but it is said that “there is still no-one in the capital who can show you a better night on the p*ss”. We rest our case. Next we push your limits again with BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 [10] (EC 09 DEC), from S. Craig Zahler—whose visceral debut was the exhilaratingly brilliant Bone Tomahawk. Vince Vaughn leads in a career-best turn in this 70s-grindhouse-cum-40s-noir wincingly violent prison film. We’ll go a bit easier on you after that one, with two films that premiered in this year’s Inverness Film Festival. Firstly, HAPPY END [11] (EC 15–21 DEC), a film with Happy in the title, a hugely likeable cast (Isabelle Huppert, Mathieu Kassovitz, Fantine Harduin and Toby Jones...), beautifully shot—but with a dark, dark underbelly to be revealed. And finally, after years as one of the world’s best screenwriters (West Wing, Social Network, Moneyball, Steve Jobs, etc) AARON SORKIN steps up to the director’s chair for MOLLY’S GAME [12] (Vue 26 DEC). This star-soaked crime drama tells the true tale of Molly Bloom’s underground poker empire for tycoons, celebs and the mob arousing the interest of the FBI. Jessica Chastain leads, with Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera and Chris O’Dowd among many others in support. Classily compelling...

13

AWARDS-SHAPED FILMS: Amongst the gong-fodder on offer this month are two more films that featured premieres at the Inverness Film Festival—BATTLE OF THE SEXES [13] (EC 08–14 DEC) with Emma Stone and Steve Carell, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boston amputee film STRONGER (Vue 08 DEC). And there’s more aiming-high ‘overcoming adversity’ true life films on offer—Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay deal with facial deformity in WONDER [14] (Vue 01 DEC), Andrew Garfield battles paralysis in BREATHE (EC 01–07 DEC) and in MARSHALL (EC 01–03 DEC & WED 06 DEC), Chadwick Boseman plays the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. Tense ensemble piece THE DINNER (Vue 08 DEC) meanwhile, stars Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall in a story of politics family and, erm, political. OTHER EC HIGHS: Two seasons to note—I ♥ JOHN HUGHES includes three classics whilst STATES OF DANGER & DECEIT (SoDaD in listings) features various European political thrillers of the 70s. M.E. AND ME (11 DEC) tells of Alan Goodwin’s battle with the condition, whilst BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL (08–14 DEC) and FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL (29 DEC) return after IFF debuts. POSSIBLES AT VUE: Recommended if they come are James Franco’s IFF2017 audience award winner, THE DISASTER ARTIST (01), SNL-created BRIGSBY BEAR (08), SHOT CALLER (15) featuring Nicolaj ‘Jaime Lannister’ Coster-Waldau; and a great line-up of Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster and Jesse Plemons in western HOSTILES (29) from Out Of The Furnace director, Scott Cooper. Keep ‘em peeled...

KIDS Ready For Christmas? If only there was something for the kids to look forward to in December. The powers that be should really come up with a holiday of some sort, perhaps involving presents and a fat old bloke squeezing down the chimney. Rumour is that they actually have, which goes some way to explain WINTER WONDERLAND in WHIN PARK from 15–17 DEC. Santa will be arriving with his Mascot Friends for something that with some justification bills itself as “the Highland Capital’s favourite event of the year for Toddlers”. Admission is free. No tickets required. Over at EDEN COURT from 15–21 DEC, the CREATIVE team, having previously created the excellent No Post For Postie and When The Winter Wind Blows, now give us FROSTY’S ALLOTMENT, which should delight the little ‘uns as much as previous productions. It’s the week before Christmas and Frosty the gardener is lonely. There’s not much happening in the vegetable patch, or so Frosty thinks. It’s cold, it’s snowy and the only thing growing are the brussel sprouts. Above the soil he finds a brave young brussel called Russell, who takes him on a magical journey to unearth Frosty’s festive spirit and bring some happiness back to his allotment. An unusual festive yarn to be sure, but we bet it’ll be fun. Eden Court is, of course, going to be packed out for this year’s Panto, SNOW WHITE [1], running from 05 DEC–07 JAN. Read more about it on our Theatre page (p35)…

1 FRI 01 & SAT 02 DEC ELF ON THE SHELF @ Victorian Market, Inverness, 11am–5pm. Santa’s Elves are very busy checking up on boys & girls before Christmas & they find all sorts of unusual places to keep an eye on them so they can report back to Santa before Christmas Eve. Go along and have lots of fun finding them all!

SAT 02 & SUN 03 DEC

LITTLE ELVES’ CHRISTMAS PARTY! @ Eden Court, 11am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm Get your Under 5’s in the festive spirit with this jam-packed hour of singing, dancing, games and creative play. Festive Folk… December is always a popular month for folk music, particularly of the traditional stripe, and this year is no exception, with the week around Hogmanay offering several particularly enticing options. Most exciting of the lot is an appearance by ethno-funk pioneers CROFT NO. FIVE [1] who, after a twelve-year hiatus, are getting back together for a one-off series of special gigs, including PHIPPS HALL, BEAULY on 29 DEC, GLENELG VILLAGE HALL on 30 DEC and THE CEILIDH PLACE, ULLAPOOL on 01 JAN (all in advance of a Celtic Connections appearance 20 Jan). The band features Treacherous Orchestra members ADAM SUTHERLAND, BARRY REID, DUNCAN LYALL, JOHN SOMERVILLE and INNES WATSON alongside whistler MISHA SOMERVILLE, bassist SOMHAIRLE MACDONALD and drummer/ percussionist PAUL JENNINGS. And their inventive, exuberant sounds remain peerless. Don’t miss them.

1

More traditional folk with a twist comes from RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS [2] at IRONWORKS on 27 DEC, while the same venue hosts the ace RHYTHMNREEL [8] for their Hogmanay bash. Elsewhere in town on 31 DEC, soundtracks to your New Year celebration are provided by a trio of finest folk—HÒ-RÒ, SKIPINNISH and SKERRYVORE at the 2017 RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING in NORTHERN MEETING PARK (see Specials p28/29 for more) and by BLAZIN’ FIDDLES [5] at BOGBAIN’s Bogmanay shindig. A word too for the excellent TIDE LINES [7] at IRONWORKS on 01 DEC, the up and coming Highland combo who use traditional folk as the starting point for something excitingly contemporary. Away from the folk frenzy, there’ll be plenty of loopy fun when HAPPY MONDAYS [3] celebrate their 30th anniversary at IRONWORKS on 21 DEC with a roster of hits that still stand up surprisingly well. That’s the place to be too on 16 DEC for Glasgow’s techno don GARY BECK [6] and on 23 DEC when an IMOUT RECORDS SHOWCASE features LIONAL, IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS, THE LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS, DR. WOOK, THE STRIVES & ROBIN ABBOT. Ahead of all the festivities there are plenty of events to get you in the mood for Santa’s arrival, best of them being the now regular appearance of Buddy Holly tribute show HOLLY AT CHRISTMAS [4] at EDEN COURT from 14–16 DEC, CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT at INVERNESS CATHEDRAL on 08 DEC and a CAROLTHON in the EASTGATE CENTRE on 16 DEC.

SPECIALS 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5… The youngsters among us might not realise that Christmas Day wasn’t actually a holiday hereabouts until 1958 and you had to wait until 1974 before you got Boxing Day off. Which goes a long way to explaining the importance in Scottish culture of Hogmanay. And, in one of the more recent traditions, the turn of the year has become synonymous with the RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING in NORTHERN MEETING PARK. This year’s edition features, as always, cheeky funnyman CRAIG HILL [4] as host, with music from three hugely popular traditional bands, HÒ-RÒ [1], SKIPINNISH [2] and SKERRYVORE [3]. The familyfriendly show features a splendid fireworks display over Inverness Cathedral at midnight ( which will no doubt be captured on many an Instagram feed) and the whole thing attracts visitors from far and wide. No tickets are required for this event and hot food and drink are on sale inside the park. Please note that you are not allowed to bring alcohol onto the site on the night. In the lead up to the festivities you might want some last minute present ideas and there are a fair few seasonal fairs and gallery sales, particular highlights being the EXCLUSIVELY HIGHLANDS show at EDEN COURT from 08–10 DEC and, because you can never go wrong with a bottle of whisky, the TOMATIN DISTILLERY XMAS FAIR on 02 DEC.

As a refuge from all the hectic shenanigans, you might want to take in some talks that will transport you to faraway places, the best of them being MARK EVANS: CROSSING THE EMPTY QUARTER OF ARABIA (HIGHLAND COUNCIL CHAMBER, 04 DEC), THIS AIN’T NO EVEREST, THIS IS K2 (BOAT OF GARTEN COMMUNITY HALL, 04 DEC) and THE NILE BY JOHN MILES (GRANT ARMS HOTEL, 09 DEC). SPORT FILM

The Season Starts Here. After the stupid stop-start to the campaign when international breaks stymied all attempts by teams to build up momentum, we’re now into that period that can make or break a season. For the first time in years there’s no El Kessocko derby (though kudos to Ross Co. for putting one on as a fundraiser for Maggie’s Highlands last month), which at least ensures that our local teams won’t take points off each other. ICT started the season in pretty much the same way they ended the last, spending most of Sep & Oct flirting with the prospect of a second successive relegation, but they finally seem to have got their act together, tightened up at the back and embarked on a tentative climb away from the danger zone. Home games this month against FALKIRK (09 DEC) and DUMBARTON (16 DEC) give them a good chance to consolidate their new-found form and while promotion still looks remote, they’ll be looking to get points in the bag before the New Year. In the top flight everyone is playing catch-up as Celtic break records and scoot over the horizon, but perhaps more teams than ever before beneath them are pretty evenly matched. ROSS COUNTY will be hopeful that their promising start under Owen Coyle (who certainly seems to “get” the club’s ethos) will give them a shot at a top six finish come May. Games this month against DUNDEE (02 DEC), KILMARNOCK (13 DEC) and particularly ST JOHNSTONE (27 DEC) may well prove decisive. Panto Time. Highlight of the month and indeed for many, the year, is the Christmas Panto at EDEN COURT. This time round, running from 08 DEC–07 JAN, it’s the classic, SNOW WHITE [1], your everyday story of jealousy, romance and the pros & cons of sharing a country cottage with seven height-challenged fellows. Actually, the panto doesn’t seem to be sticking to the traditional story with a whole load of new characters introduced. Taking on the dual roles of director and dame for the second-year running is STEVEN WREN, with ROSS ALLAN returning for more slapstick fun as Jingles the Jester. The role of the Prince will be taken on by DAVID RANKINE, who was last at Eden Court in the title role of Aladdin in 2014 and the iconic role of the Wicked Queen will be played by MARJ HOGARTH. Snow White will be played by LUCY HUTCHISON. Of course, there are pantos aplenty taking place throughout the area over the month, details of which are in our listings, though special mention should be made of two different takes on SLEEPING BEAUTY, at MACDONALD AVIEMORE RESORT [6] (02–30 DEC) and FLORIANS THEATRE (08–16 DEC). If you like your Christmas shows a little less traditional, you can’t go wrong with Anthony Neilson’s THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS [2], at EDEN COURT from 19–21 DEC, a hilarious anti-pantomime for adults, which invites you to join Gary, Simon, and Gary’s prostitute pal Cherry, as they decipher the true meaning of Christmas and whether or not the junkie Elf really is who he says he is. The above sounds positively Dickensian, but for an actual performance of the Victorian writer’s work, head along to A CHRISTMAS CAROL [5] at EC on 09 DEC wherein Guy Masterson, veteran of many smash hit solo works such as Under Milk Wood, Animal Farm and Shylock, now brings us his one-man version of the classic festive fable. Masterson’s shows are always gob-smackingly impressive and this should be no exception. Surprising as it may seem, not everything in December has to be Christmas related though, so don’t miss out on EDUCATING RITA from 19–21 DEC, with the EDEN COURT CREATIVE crew showcasing Highland talent in their adaptation of Willy Russell’s charming and funny Pygmalionesque story. For something a bit more physical, the always popular ROCK’N’WRESTLE returns bringing WINTERSLAM 2017 [3] to IRONWORKS on 09 DEC, with a kind of Snow White/Aladdin conflict as JACK JESTER takes on SABU—while if you want to partake in throwing people around with a little more elegance (and perhaps prepare yourself for Christmas parties), the NESS AROUND SWING DANCING FESTIVAL [4] from 01–03 DEC is the place to be. The most northerly swing dancing community in Britain will be combining classes, demonstrations and exuberantly snazzy moves over the weekend. Full details at highlandswingdancing.com

EATING OUT

Kincraig Castle Hotel Tomich, nr Invergordon 01349 852 587 Seals. Loads of them, just lolling on the rocks, soaking up the bright autumn sun shining down on the Cromarty Firth. Another reminder that only a few minutes drive out of Inverness there’s a glorious Highland landscape that’s crying out for a David Attenborough voiceover, and a perfect backdrop for a Sunday lunchtime excursion to Kincraig Castle Hotel.

Ancestral base for the Clan MacKenzie, Kincraig can trace its history back to the 1600s with ensuing generations updating the building over the years, in once case using a fortune made in India which might explain some of the Asian-influenced design touches scattered throughout the elegant old-school Highland interior of what is now a 4-star country hotel.

A few months back we told you about the elegant surroundings of Table Manors out at Achnagairn and, if anything, Kincraig Castle is even more impressive. The aforementioned 25 minute drive takes you along the waterside and past rolling hills, the vivid autumnal foliage only adding to the appeal of one of the most popular sections of the increasingly high-profile North Coast 500. Finally, just off the main road, a curving path reveals Kincraig Castle itself, a fine white building set in sweeping grounds with a glorious view over Nigg.

And if you eat there, you have a choice of venues; a large baronial dining room complete with stag’s head on the wall and an air of enduring gentility, or a slightly more informal smaller bar. Similarly, you can opt for a casual dining experience or a more sophisticated (and expensive) taster menu of three or five courses. Best of all, you can have Sunday lunch, which at £15.95 for three courses proves to be remarkable value, especially since you get to

eat in the Alexander Restaurant, the aforementioned dining room watched over by one of the less fortunate members of the deer community. It’s already bustling when we arrive, a huge round table occupied by a dozen or so elderly folk who might be tourists or just locals who’ve sussed a superb location for a weekend gathering. Even though it’s busy, service remains calm and efficient, our waiter James being friendly rather than intrusive. He brings complementary bread with whipped butter, the first sign that the small details are well taken care of. I’m dining with Ms X, who you’ll be familiar with from past reviews, and she chooses as her starter Mushroom Veloute. You’d think it would be difficult to present mushroom soup (which no matter what you do is always
