n INVERNESS

Dimàirt (Tuesday) 13 BALACH NA BONAID @ TAIGH-CLUICHE NA H-ÌOMPAIREACHD, EDEN COURT, INBHIR NIS

‘S e tachartas caran coltach ri ‘Peter and the Wolf’ a tha anns The Boy and The Bunnet ach le dreach a’ chiùil thraidiseanta a bhios tarraingeach do dhiofar aoisean. Seo a’ chiad uair a bhios an obair ùr thaitneach seo ri faicinn agus ri cluinntinn le ceòl bhon neach-ciùil ainmeil, Seumas Ros, agus sgeulachd ùr bhon sgrìobhadair iomraiteach Seumas MacDhonnchaidh. Bidh an tionndadh seo ann an Gàidhlig le briathran Aonghais MhicNeacail.

Novelist James Robertson

THE BOY AND THE BUNNET @ EDEN COURT EMPIRE THEATRE, INVERNESS

The Boy and The Bunnet is traditional music’s answer to ‘Peter and the Wolf’ – a delight for all ages. World Premiere performance of an exciting work by composer, James Ross, to a new story for children by award-winning novelist, James Robertson. This version is adapted into Gaelic by Aonghas MacNeacail. The ‘Boy and the Bunnet’ follows a young boy, Neil, who lives in rural Scotland with his Granny, and the adventures he has over the course of one day with a stag, a selkie, a craw and a cat. Neil follows the stag into a wood but becomes lost and is injured. The animals collaborate to alert Granny to the danger by sending Neil’s distinctive toorie bunnet on an elaborate journey home. The personality of each character and drama of the story are illustrated through the music and interspersed with live narration.

Moladh ceòlmhor na bàrdachd aig Somhairle MacGill-Eain fo stiùir Choinnich MhicThòmais, le ceòl ùr bho Stiùbhart MacRath, Màiri Anna NicUalraig, Eilidh NicChoinnich, Màiri-Louise Napier, Ailean Dòmhnallach, Blàr Dùghlas, Dòmhnall Seadhach, Ailean MacEanraig agus Coinneach MacThòmais. Chaidh dàn drùidhteach, lèirsinneach, Hallaig, a sgrìobhadh mu dheidhinn fear de na bailtean a chaidh fhuadach ann an Ratharsair. Chaidh a sgrìobhadh le Somhairle MacGill-Eain an 1952, agus chaidh fhoillseachadh an toiseach ann an Gairm an 1954. Seo an dàn is dòcha as eòlaiche air a bheil daoine a-mach às a’ bhàrdachd aig Somhairle MacGill-Eain air fad. An 2002 dh’fhoillsich Urras Shomhairle eadar-theangachadh de ‘Hallaig’ leis a’ bhàrd Èireannach a choisinn Duais Nobel, Seamus Heaney. A musical celebration of the poetry of Sorley MacLean with musical director Kenneth Thomson featuring compositions by Stuart MacRae, Mary Ann Kennedy, Eilidh Mackenzie, MarieLouise Napier, Allan Macdonald, Blair Douglas, Donald Shaw, Allan Henderson and Kenneth Thomson. The music is inspired by an intense and visionary poem about Hallaig, one of the cleared townships on Raasay. It was composed by Sorley MacLean in 1952, and was first published in Gairm in 1954. The poem is perhaps the best known of Sorley MacLean’s work, and a translation of ‘Hallaig’ by Irish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, was published by Urras Shomhairle in 2002.

A rare opportunity this year to hear The Campbells of Greepe - one of the singing dynasties of Gaelic music. Kenna and Seumas Campbell, Kenna’s daughters Mary Ann and Wilma Kennedy and niece Maggie Macdonald represent two generations of a family of pipers and singers from the tiny township of Greepe near Dunvegan, in a community where song was the constant to the way of life. Tonight they will be joined by singer Darren MacLean, dancer Frank McConnell and Fèis an Earraich.

JONATHAN OWEN and CHARLIE HAMMOND

This exhibition will consist of new and existing sculptures, paintings and drawings including a collaborative new work. There are formal contrasts between the artists’ work but they also have a shared tendency to transmogrify. They also seem to share a belief in dark humour and absurdity as vital parts of the working process. Because of this balance of contrasts and shared concerns, this will be a fascinating and playful exhibition for all ages. Jonathan Owen: Recent sculptural work by Jonathan Owen has seen his carving skills completely transform domestic objects - coat stands and coat hooks from Habitat, starburst clocks and touristic ornaments have been delicately carved into whilst retaining the original structure. Jonathan installation will also include site specific sculptural works inspired by the architecture of the space and, as a development of earlier work, use the window/roof light areas. Jonathan Owen has exhibited widely within the UK and also recently in Melbourne and Warsaw. His work is included in collections of the Henry Moore Foundation, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Paisley Art Gallery. He is represented by doggerfisher gallery, and lives and works in Edinburgh. Charlie Hammond: Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 2002 Charlie Hammond has exhibited his paintings and sculptures in many significant galleries worldwide. This recently included a collaboration with German artist Michael Bauer as well as one-person shows in Miami Beach, Los Angeles and New York. He is represented by Sorcha Dallas Gallery and lives and works in Glasgow.
