Back when we had the last Tory London administration, JULIAN CLARY was outlawed by the media for making people laugh by including Norman Lamont and the word ‘fisting’ in the same sentence. Has anything changed? Anyway, he’s still going strong - see him at IRONWORKS this month. The former chancellor currently earns his brass as a stand up doing fiscal jokes about Julian Clary. Allegedly.

We don’t go back just cos the clocks do... u Wasn t there supposed to be something in the rule book about the nights drawing in slowly round this time of year? Not just blinding low winter sun in the morning and the big light switch in the sky turned off to plunge us into darkness just past lunchtime. So we re going to have to get that summer will be on the way soon mantra out of our heads and realise that it s winter. Which is just as well, since the WINTER FESTIVAL bounds into action with the boundto-be gobsmacking BONFIRE AND FIREWORKS in Bught Park and the XMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON, both of which you can read about inside along with all the other Winter Fest events for the months ahead. That s not the only festival in town though and the 8TH INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL has so many great movies, you ll be well and truly boggle-eyed by the time you ve seen them all. Our front cover features IAIN MCLAUGHLIN and JAMES MACKENZIE, two local musicians who we re tipping for very big things in 2011, spearheading a burgeoning local scene that this month sees acts like THE SIGNAL, TEENAGE LOBOTOMIES and (ex-pats) CAPITALS all ready to raise the rafters. 6 DAY RIOT, PULLED APART BY HORSES and the marvellously named GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP will also be contributing to an ace music month. On top of all that there are wild world sounds in the LOVE MUSIC FESTIVAL, great comedy from RHOD GILBERT, JULIAN CLARY, ISSY SUTIE and more, sublime opera in MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, fascinating art from THE BOYLE FAMILY and ED RUSCHA (five star review in The Times; where we lead...), even a giant bear Abba singalong. Plenty of excuses to ward off those dark nights then. And there ll be even more next month as you ll discover from our bumper double issue. Until then, have fun. BOYLE FAMILY: LOCH RUTHVEN @ HICA, until 28 Nov HICA continues to promote some of the most engagingly unusual contemporary art, this time courtesy of the Boyle Family, one of the most original creative forces of the past four decades. They are probably best known for their earth

studies:

three

dimensional casts of the surface of the earth which record and document random sites with great accuracy. Series

Their

project

World began

in 1968 and took their concept of contemporary archaeology onto a global scale, with 1,000 randomly selected sites around the world. This project is ongoing, its overwhelmingly grand scale progressing through sites and museum exhibitions in Europe, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. For this exhibition the artists will undertake a contemporary archaeological study of the area surrounding the gallery. HICA, occupying a relatively remote site and something of a random location, provides an especially apt venue for an exhibition which references their Institute of Contemporary Archaeology, founded by Boyle and Hills in 1966, when they carried out their important event Dig . KILMORACK GALLERY

13th Christmas Exhibition 27 Nov - 23 Dec Kilmorack Gallery brings warmth to the winter again with its 13th Christmas exhibition. Highlights include the welcome return of Helen Denerley’s sculpture to the gallery. It’s been a busy year of English shows for this successful scrap-metal sculptor so it is good to see her latest creations in the north again. Further highlights include a series of new horse paintings by Kirstie Cohen who is more often associated with her richly worked landscape paintings. James Adams’ paintings are a welcome addition to Kilmorack too; with their naïve, almost dreamlike evocation of the highlands. There will also be fresh work by Allan MacDonald after his sell-out exhibition in the summer. For info 01463 783 230 or kilmorackgallery.co.uk

ED RUSHCA to 20 November Works by one of the most influential pop artists of the past fifty years, Ed Ruscha. Well worth seeing. EDGE HEBRIDES: PATRICIA MACDONALD to 20 November An aerial view of a cultural landscape. Dramatic aerial photographs by Patricia MacDonald with Angus MacDonald. The Edge is intense, creative, demanding, dangerous: a liminal zone. The archipelago of the Herbrides is such a place. It combines Boreal (northern) and Atlantic (western) qualities of climate and ecology. PLANT MEMORY 27 Nov - 8 Jan Victoria Crowe’s long term interest in the study and drawing of flowers and plants naturally lead to an exchange between the artist and the scientist David Ingram, Master of St Catherine’s College in Cambridge and formerly Regius Keeper at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh on the wider aspects of knowledge of plants and nature. The exhibition is based on the artist’s study of the wonderful old archives, herbals and historic collections of plants in Cambridge and Venice. The delicate beauty and detailed analysis of the plant forms illustrate the natural link between science and art. inverness.highland.museum

CINEMA > Inverness Film Festival INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL @ Eden Court, 03-07 Nov

You can keep your Venice and Cannes, the only film festival that counts is the Inverness one, now in its eighth year. It may not have the razzle dazzle of more famous fests, but each year you know you re going to get a rake of movies that people will be raving about in six months time. Last year gave us The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Valhalla Rising, 44 Inch Chest, The Informant and loads more, making for the best part of four days spent just watching films. Which was fine by us frankly. This year the focus is on debut works from young and up and coming directors across the world, along with a few famous names and eagerly awaited films. There are fifteen Scottish and three UK premieres and again you get to vote for your favourites in the 2nd Inverness Film Festival Audience Award. On top of all that there s a film quiz and loads of retrospectives, workshops and special events, our favourite being Unravel on Thu 04 in the Jim Love Studio, a project aiming to create a hand-painted film 874 miles long, correlating with the distance between Lands End and John O Groats. For more details of the whole festival see the Eden Court cinema guide starting on p69 and check out their website at www.invernessfilmfestival. com

In the meantime here are ten films in the festival that we re particularly looking forward to. NEVER LET ME GO, Wed 03, 7.30pm - The opening night gala sees Kazuo Ishiguro s Booker prize winning novel brought to the big screen starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightly and Charlotte Rampling in a classic coming of age drama. ANOTHER YEAR, Thu 04, 6pm - Mike Leigh s long awaited new film, just his fourth in the last decade. It explores four seasons in the life of a couple in their early sixties and the friends and family who cross their paths. Long time Leigh collaborators Jim Broadbent and Imelda Staunton are among the stars. THE TROTSKY, Thu 04, 9pm - The UK premiere so you can be the first in the country to see this comedy from writer/director Jacob Tierney about a group of disenchanted youths trying to take down the high school principal. A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP, Fri 05, 5pm - One of the many excellent Asian films at this year s festival, this is a Chinese Wushu style remake of the Coen Brothers mighty Blood Simple. MONSTERS, Fri 05, 7pm - When a probe was launched to collect samples from space it ended up crashing in Central America leaving Northern Mexico a no-go zone where the military struggles to contain the creatures . The spectacular debut from visual effects artist Gareth Edwards. THE DEBT, Fri 05 Nov, 8.30pm - Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington star in this powerful story of Rachel Singer; a former Mossad agent who tried to capture and bring to trial a notorious Nazi war criminal, the Surgeon of Birkenau, in a secret Israeli mission that ended with his death on the streets of East Berlin. THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET S NEST, Fri 05, 9pm - The third instalment of Steig Larsson s Millennium trilogy picks up immediately after The Girl Who Played With Fire. Lisbeth Salander is in hospital and under arrest for a triple murder, while in the outside world Mikael Blomkvist must fight both corruption and the secret police. THE AMERICAN, Sat 06 Nov, 8.30pm - George Clooney is an assassin retreating to the Italian countryside. This is rock-photographer Anton Corbijn s follow up to the wonderful Joy Division biopic Control . OF GODS AND MEN, Sat 06 Nov, 6pm - Winner of the Grand Prix at this year s Cannes festival, this is a moving story of Christian monks trying to live with their Muslim brothers after an Islamic attack. Loosely based on a true story. ANIMAL KINGDOM, Sun 07, 7.30pm - The closing night gala features David Michod s first feature, which won the Grand Jury prize at this year s Sundance Festival. It s a potent insight into Australian criminal life featuring some of that country s finest acting talent. Underbelly it ain t.

SEAN SHRIBE @ Inverness Town House, Fri 12 Nov, 1.10pm A chance to hear Sean Shribe, an outstanding young Scottish musician who s causing a stir in the guitar world. Despite only being eighteen this young man has already picked up a wheelbarrow full of acclaim and prestigious classical awards and has performed in front of, among others, the Dalai Lama at a full Usher Hall. Big guitar fan, yer Lama. Shribe is currently studying at the RSAMD in Glasgow and looks like going on to even greater things. Definitely worth extending your lunch hour for and sure to appeal to a wider audience than the hardcore classical fan.

QUINTET ZAMBRA @ Invergordon Academy, Wed 17 Nov, 7.30pm A group of dynamic young graduates from Britain s Music Academies play Debussy, Taffanel, Poulenc and Dvorak. Quintet Zambra aim to spice up the familiar wind quintet repertoire with some more unusual pieces. They were recently awarded the prestigious Mary D. Adams prize for Chamber Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and have since performed for the Duke of Edinburgh and made an exciting appearance in the Gherkin in London .

RED PRIEST @ St Christopher’s Chapel, Gordonstoun School, Thu 25 Nov, 7.30pm Billed as The only early music group in the world to have been compared in the press to the Rolling Stones , Red Priest are a classical music quartet disguised as a heavy metal band. Since their formation in 1997 they have performed to sell out crowds across the globe. Their repertoire ranges from obscure 17th century sonatas to the most famous works of Bach and Vivaldi, all presented in imaginative programmes with filmic titles: Priest on the Run , Nightmare in Venice , Pirates of the Baroque , Johann, I m Only Dancing! There s a strong visual element to their performances, with a swashbuckling, emotional all action approach. Whilst the purists will be outraged the rest of us are free to admit we quite like this sort of thing, if you re not sure what side of the fence you re on you can watch them online here: piersadams.com/RedPriest/

LEE NELSON’S WELL GOOD SHOW @ Ironworks, Sat 12 Oct You might be familiar with Nelson from his BBC3 show and presumably will have already made up your mind about whether his Ali G-meets-kids-TV-presenter character is tickling your funny bone. Live, the show is apparently rather edgier and more satisfying than the TV version suggests with a welter of good reviews picked up already, so he might be worth checking out.

AUDIOLIFE/GRAEME PARK @ Cake, Sat 13 Nov There have been quite a few DJ legends coming to town recently and this month is no exception, but this is one of the greatest of them all, one-time Hacienda resident jock (for eight years!) Graeme Park. Anyone lucky enough to have been at one of those extraordinary nights (like this writer) will still treasure it a quarter of a century on and it seems that park himself cherishes the memories as he s celebrating the 25th anniversary with a series of special nights all over the UK and overseas playing a selection of classic house tunes as well as new and current tunes too. It looks like being quite a performance as he ll be delving into the thousands upon thousands of tunes he has collected on vinyl over the years: House music has made people channel their tastes, he says, so I went back to my roots and pulled out some forgotten classics. Support for this night comes from Audiolife s Alan MacPherson + Brian Mackenzie thisisgraemepark.com

DIMENSION/LISA LASHES @ Ironworks, Sat 13 Nov Unfortunately scheduled for the same night as Graeme Park s appearance at Cake, so it s a night that s going to necessitate plenty of running back and forth, especially since the bill is topped by the self-proclaimed World s Number One Hard Dance Female DJ . She actually lives up to the billing, wowing crowds wherever she goes so it s bound to be a great night. Particularly since the bill also includes Mallorca Lee, Cally & Juice, Force 9 and many more. Check out the new decor and get yourself into the drinks promotions, glowstick and CD giveaways, announcement of the winner of the DJ competition and all the rest. Only little over a year old, the Polymath project has gone from strength to strength, with young Highlands producer Martin Gowans picking up the pace and gaining momentum. DREVER, MCCUSKER & WOOMBLE (pic) @ Ironworks, Thu 04 Nov A veritable superstar combo as singer KRIS DREVER (part of the wonderful LAU) is joined by fiddle player and multi-instrumentalist JOHN MCCUSKER, who regularly tours with Mark Knopfler and Eddie Reader, and Idlewild frontman RODDY WOOMBLE, who himself had a stunning solo debut with “My Secret Is My

Silence”. An array of stellar guests from both the folk and rock spheres contributed to the trio’s debut album, including Radiohead drummer Philip Selway, Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake (vocals) and Francis MacDonald (drums), Capercaillie bandmates Donald Shaw (keyboards), Mike McGoldrick (flute/whistles) and Ewen Vernal (bass), plus Irish singer Heidi Talbot, the result being a fine blueprint for how to bring traditional music into the 21st century without losing any of its grace or feeling. Get along and see just how it should be done.

KAREN MATHESON @ Eden Court, Fri 12 Nov Best known as frontwoman of Capercaillie, Karen Matheson has one of the most beautifully pure voices around and her solo albums, starting with Downriver back in 2005, have shown that voice off to arguably even better effect, gliding over simple acoustic accompaniment. She’s joined here by regular collaborators JAMES GRANT on guitars, EWEN VERNAL on double bass and DONALD SHAW on piano, along with special guests and if you’ve never heard her voice before, prepare to be breathtaken.

Duo from Shetland’s acclaimed Fiddlers Bid, their self-penned new album White Nights has been picking up rave reviews all over the place. Somehow the combination of harp and fiddle seems perfectly suited to their windswept origins, old Scottish airs tinged with the spirit of Scandinavia and wide

open skies. Well worth checking out.

MUSIC > ACOUSTIC-ROCK > ... 6 DAY RIOT @ Hootananny, Fri 05 Nov Though they’ve been together for four years, it’s only now that London band 6 Day Riot are finally achieving the greatness some of us have long thought them capable of. Fronted by the sometime ukulele playing TAMARA SCHLESINGER, the band bring on board all manner of instruments to make their irresistible folk-pop, as demonstrated on their ace new album “On This Island” and the accompanying “Take Me” single. We asked Tamara what records are currently floating her boat.

Box 014

“>> GRIZZLY BEAR – Veckatimest. I love the mood and feel of this whole album, I have it on my MP3 player in the car and constantly put it on. It takes me to another place. >> THE XX – XX. I had this album before the band won the Mercury, but I have revisited it recently. I love the sound of the guitar and the interplay between the male and female vocals. It is how duets should be done. >> ARCADE FIRE - The Suburbs. I am probably one of the few people that is not a raving Arcade Fire fan, however this album has somehow got under my skin, every time I listen to it it seems to reveal another layer to me, and the band have a way of making every record they make sound like “them”, and that is quite a hard thing to do. >> TUNNG - And Then We Saw Land. I think Tunng are such an under rated band, this album has moments of brilliance and somehow it has been over shadowed by other “Nu-Folk” artists, personally I think they are one of the best Folktronica bands in the UK. >> WAVE MACHINES - Wave If You’re Really There. We played just before this band at Green Man Festival last year and loved their set so much we bought the album and listened to it all the way home. I am still listening to it. They are a bit like Friendly Fires, but perhaps more acoustic and pop in parts. Punk Spirit is one of my favourite tracks from the album.”

BROKEN RECORDS @ Bogbain Farm, Sat 13 Nov Regular readers will know that here at ICA, Broken Records are held in the highest esteem and remain pretty much a benchmark for how instantly we can fall in love with a band’s music. Last year’s debut album was every bit as good as the live shows that preceded it suggested it would be and the follow up, Let Me Come Home looks like being just as essential if the first single from it, “A Darkness Rises Up” is anything to go by. Just like 6 Day Riot, they’re unafraid of introducing a whole host of instruments to a richly textured sound that resonates not only with the echoes of traditional Scottish tunes, but also an ambitious modernity. It’s a gorgeous, layered sound and even a (relatively) stripped down line-up from seven to six (thanks to a line up change that has seen the departure of Arne and Gill and introduction of new member Craig Ross) should show just how hypnotically well it works live. There have been some corking gigs at Bogbain recently and this could be one of the very best. 0871 230 2360 seetickets.com

NEWTON FAULKNER @ Ironworks, Tue 09 Nov We have to admit that there are an awful lot of you out there who are hailing the dreadlocked singer songwriter as some sort of sonic messiah. Brit-nominated, the follow up to his debut album, Hand Built By Robots is called Rebuilt By Humans, showing that there’s a smart imagination behind the scruffy exterior. Those of you who love his plaintive warblings and occasionally inventive covers of songs like Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” will be there in numbers. www.ironworksvenue.com

JONI MITCHELL PROJECT @ Resolis Memorial Hall, Fri 12 Nov SALLY BARKER presents a captivating evening of JONI MITCHELL’s poignant early songs in a show dedicated to one of the truly great singer/songwriters. No mean songwriter herself, Sally - best known perhaps for being in THE POOZIES - cherished a yearning to present an evening of Joni’s songs since she was asked to perform ‘Coyote’ in a tribute version of Martin Scorsese’s film ‘The Last Waltz’. The timbre and phrasing of Barker’s voice bear an uncanny resemblance to that of the cool Canadian so we’re in for a treat as she’s joined by GLENN HUGHES on piano and dulcimer and DEBBIE CASSELL on banjo and backing vocals for a trip from the Satie-esque setting of ‘Blue’ to the boisterous ‘Raised on 21 Robbery’. joni-mitchell-project.co.uk

MUSIC > WORLD & ROOTS > ... LOVE MUSIC FESTIVAL @ Eden Court, Sat 13 Nov Though not perhaps on the scale of the meltdown Festival at London’s Royal Festival Hall, this is a

Box Office: 01463 234234

similarly ambitious and open-minded affair, transforming Eden Court into a magical new world for the day and lining up an array of bands all making the sort of music that you’ll probably never have encountered before. The day starts as it means to go on at 11am (yes, in the morning) with the very, very awesome HUUN HUUR TU (pictured, right>>>), Mongolian throat singers from Tuva. Much admired by the late John Peel, the sounds their voices make are similarly disorientating and hypnotic. Not to be missed. They’re followed by PETEBOX, Radio 1 Beatbox Champion and Channel 4 Talent Award Winner who is one of world’s finest proponents of the art. His breathtaking abilities to create and re-create many styles of music such as Hip-Hop, Drum’n’Bass, Jazz, House, Garage and Rock have to be seen (and heard) to be believed. The morning gig concludes with OREN MARSHALL AND THE CHARMING TRANSPORT BAND. Led by a pioneering player of acoustic tuba and electric tuba, The Charming Transport Band play an irresistibly captivating music that is almost impossible to categorise. A mix of Jazz, Afro-Beat, traditional Ghanaian, Jewish and European free-improvised music, performed by an octet of African percussionists and London based improvisers. The afternoon goes under the banner of Balkan Mash, with KOLEKTIF ISTANBUL from Turkey, JONNY AXELSSON (below, pic 2) from Sweden and CREAKING TREE STRING QUARTET from Canada bringing a whole bunch of diverse sounds from Balkan grooves and percussion on scrap metal to improvised Bluegrass. Elsewhere at Eden Court during the day you’ll also be able to catch more world music in the form of the Sonic Harmonic artists roster. The EVA QUARTET bring Bulgarian folk, MAMADOU DIABATE West African harp and SVÄNG (picture 4) from Finland grooves influenced by everything from tango to Japanese Manga all played by the quartet on harmonicas. Obviously. As you can see then, a bit of a musical melting pot and one well worth diving into for the day. MUSIC > ROCK > MEGA-MONTH, MEGA-NIGHT! Punk4Life: THE SIGNAL @ The Phoenix, Sat 20 Nov Good to see punk rock enjoying something of a musical resurgence and, judging by the Bandmates Wanted ads in the local guitar shops inspiring a whole swathe of groups yet to come. If you want to see just how it should be done, you should check out our favourite rabble-rousers The Signal, whose anthemic Tesco Town is just one of the highlights of a very strong setlist. Their gigs are always a visceral thrill and this should be no exception, made all the better by the fact that you get to see not only them but also the mighty TEENAGE LOBOTOMIES, BIN LADEN’S DAUGHTER, GENETIC MUTATION and ANT-UABHAS (whose name we think might be something Gaelic about fear). It goes under the banner Punk 4 Life, a slogan that’s always worth bearing in mind, costs just £4 and is in aid of HIGHLAND HOSPICE. Don’t miss it.

PULLED APART BY HORSES plus GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP, and YOUNG LEGIONNAIRE @ Ironworks, Sat 20 Nov

24hr Box Office: 0871 789 7143

Another strong line-up and a shame that it takes place on the same night as The Signal gig. If only we could all be in two places at once. Perhaps they’ll stagger the stage times so folk can nip back and forth the twenty yards between the venues. PULLED APART BY HORSES are a Leeds quartet with a fine line in riffedup guitars and catchy flourishes as well as quite magnificent titles such as “Meat Balloon”, “I Punched A

lion In The Throat” and “Back To The F*** Yeah”. Their latest, “High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive” is every bit as good as it sounds and ought to send the evening stratospheric. Great though PABH’s name is, it’s not the best on the bill, that being the support GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP. The New York hardcore quartet have members with monikers like Sid Jagger and Nico Pesticide, make fast, dumb music generally concerned with the homoerotic urges from which they take their name and are, all in all, pretty bleeding splendid. The bill is completed by YOUNG LEGIONNAIRE who have something of a star-studded line-up including PAUL MULLEN (guitarist and singer for The Automatic and formerly the awesome yourcodenameis:milo) and GORDON MOAKES (bassist for Bloc Party). The music is post hardcore. A very fine night would appear to be in store.

GOGOBOTS / CAPITALS / THE FIRE & I @ Mad Hatters, Sat 20 Nov Headliners are Glasgow’s Gogobots, a fine Talking Headsy pop trio, but it’s the next name down the bill that’s got us most excited. CAPITALS are the duo of Angus Carbarns and Keir MacCulloch, both names

Box 014

that’ll be familiar to long-time aficionados of the Inverness/Dingwall scenes. Angus did his bit with Theatre Fall and early Cinematics while Keir has been a veritable dervish in the studio producing rakes of electronic music, usually under the name Araya. Combining rock and electronica with real vim, they’re surely destined for very great things. Taking place on a night that (if you see elsewhere on this page) finds a host of other great bands playing around town, Sat 20 Nov could well go down as the single greatest musical night in Inverness’ history. And Capitals are up there with the best of the best.

LOST IN AUDIO / NOEXITWOUND @ Mad Hatters, Thu 04 Nov Big hits at Rockness, Glasgow combo Lost In Audio are well known for energetic live shows, so anticipate much bouncing around. Noexitwound are a trio from Thurso who make one heck of a fine racket. Expect to hear much more of them in the months ahead.

SKINNY MACHINES / THE BALL DEEP / WE ARE MARS @ Mad Hatters, Fri 19 Nov London quartet Skinny Machines are joined by a couple of local acts both well worth checking out, in the form of The Ball Deep and We Are Mars. We’re getting the feeling that the Inverness/Highland scene is beginning to flourish like never before. 2011 could well be a game-changing year.

MUSIC > ROCK > FAULTLINE EP RELEASE... JAMES MACKENZIE & THE AQUASCENE + IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS + guests @ Ironworks, Fri 26 Nov

24hr Box Office: 0871 789 7143

This could well be the most exciting time in Inverness musical history. Hyperbole? Not if, like us you can sense a real shift in the ambition and creative dynamism taking place among young local acts. With Ironworks having bedded in as an integral part of the cultural landscape and a long overdue sense that different venues are all working together for the common good rather than trying to scupper each others plans. Then there s the newly opened Cake and a musical environment where barriers between genres like rock and dance have been well and truly consigned to the shed at the bottom of the garden. It certainly seems to be paying off with a host of new bands forming, inspirational performances taking place (like the array of acts on stages round town on Sat 20 Nov which pretty much constitute a top festival line up) and a genuine sense that anything is possible. The last band to break out of the local scene to a wider audience were Jyrojets (although things rather fell apart thanks to an almost heroically misguided record company) and surely it is only a matter of time before another Inverness band takes their vision and verve to those lands past the central belt. For quite some time now, we ve been convinced that Iain McLaughlin & The Outsiders are the band that are going to make that step and our confidence is strengthened by the imminent release of a splitEP with another of the area s bright hopes, James MacKenzie & The Aquascene. More of Mackenzie later, but first to McLaughlin. Having been involved in local bands he relocated To Edinburgh for a while before returning here to get the Outsiders together. And the combination of Iain, Paul Elliott on lead guitar, Andy Davidson on drums and Andy D on bass has proved a fruitful one. There s something very special in the combination of glacial guitars, strong songs and real charisma, making for something that will appeal to fans of the likes of The Verve and Kings Of Leon, as well as more elegiac outfits like House Of Love and Spiritualised.

26

Most importantly, what shines through is the confidence that this isn t just some local dilettantism, but music made to be heard by a lot more people than just those in the Highlands. The band s two tracks on the EP, Remedy and Don t Look Back look certain to reach afar. Big music, big ambitions, big future. James MacKenzie s music is perhaps not as instantly commercial, but could well find itself just as successful. Acoustic led arrangements influenced by everyone from Crosby, Stills & Nash to Damien Rice are given a unique twist by the interplay between cello and violin that overlays proceedings and the harmonies between James and Erin Hall-Gardiner. Thankfully it also retains an integrity and rather than overpolishing the sound, the whole is imbued with a natural, almost live feel. It s all rather beautiful as the two tracks on the EP, Thoughts and The Journey of The Dileas demonstrate rather well. Two different musical styles then, but a unity of confidence, the result being the split-EP The Faultline . The name will bring back memories of the old night at The Railway Club many years ago, the only outlet in town back then for any new bands. Apt then that it should lend its name to a very modern, very different state of affairs and the first step towards an even brighter future for Inverness young musicians. To celebrate the launch of the EP the two bands are both appearing at Ironworks on Fri 26 Nov, also featuring appearances from two more of the city s most enjoyable bands in the form of Leonard Jones Potential and Ketimine Deco. If 2010 is ending like this, just imagine how exciting 2011 is going to be. Good times indeed.

In fact it might have been interesting to see them incorporated into that event, especially since one of the performers on show is Roya Maclean from Muir of Ord, one of the finest young box players around and someone who we’ve always thought deserves appreciation from a whole new audience. Maclean’s Trio are just one of the attractions as the Highland Accordion and Fiddle Club celebrates both its 37th year and recent Club Of The Year award. Also on the bill you’ll find Northern Constabulary Community Pipe Band led by Pipe Major Kenny Watson, the ever popular Elizabeth Fraser Dancers and Colin Donaldson and his Scottish Dance Band. The concert is compered by Moray Firth Radio’s John “The Prof” Mathieson. www.hafc-inverness.com/ BROKEN RECORDS @ Bogbain Farm, 8pm The truly wonderful Broken Records come to Bogbain. 01463772800

INVERNESS WINTER FESTIVAL

The Winter Festival kicks off with the Malice In Wonderland Halloween high jinks on Ness Islands, but that s just the start of a couple of months of fun. It begins, of course, with the always wonderful Bonfire and Fireworks in Bught Park on Fri 05 Nov. This year we re told that they ll be even bigger and better than ever, which should be quite something. Later in the month, on 21 Nov, the Xmas season really gets underway with the Christmas Lights Switch On including Santa and special guests, followed by carols at St Stephen s Old Church. See the following pages for full details of all the treats the Winter Festival has in store for you and your family. 33

INVERNESS WINTER FESTIVAL

Do you remember that scene in the film National Lampoon’s Animal House when everybody was so depressed that they decided to have a Toga Party? Or that scene in the film Titanic when the band decided to play ‘Johnny B Goode’ as the ship started to sink after hitting an iceberg created by some bank north of Newfoundland and Marti tried to stop his mother from marrying Biff? Well forget about sitting in front of the TV worrying watching films that start to blur into each other and join us as we head out to discover what the Inverness Winter Festival team have got in store for us this year. From HALLOWEEN to HOGMANAY there is always something going on in the Highland Capital – unless of course somebody decides to dump the contents of the Artic on our streets overnight – in which case it makes perfect sense to postpone the Red Hot Highland Fling Hogmanay Concert for 12 months and start planning for next year...

Fri 29 & Sat 30 Oct 6.30pm: HALLOWEEN @ Ness Islands Fri 05 Nov 7.30pm: INVERNESS GRAND BONFIRE & FIREWORKS @ Bught Park Sun 21 Nov 5.30pm: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON @ Town House Sat 11 & Sun 12 Dec 4pm–7pm: RUDOLPH’S WINTER WONDERLAND @ Whin Park Hogmanay, time tbc - see next month: RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING @ Northern Meeting Park Arena

HALLOWEEN

“Wonderfully insane and utterly spectacular – and that was just the crowd” is perhaps the best description that we have heard to describe last year’s Halloween Show featuring Blackbeard which attracted 10,000 of us down to Ness Islands. Which gives you some idea why we cannot wait for “Malice in Wonderland” which will open this year’s Winter Festival to start on Friday 29th October and Saturday 30th October. The creative geniuses from Eden Court Theatre’s Education Team, Arts in Motion and the Highland Council’s Lighting Department have this year taken one of the weirdest fairy stories ever written down a 1300 metre journey into the Twilight Zone and packed it full of surprises and experiences that are going to delight children of all ages. The team have also recognised the fantastic contribution made to the success of the show by the public by running a competition to have two folk create their own characters “The King and Queen of Tarts” and get involved as VIPs. Goodness knows what kind of creatures are going to head for the Islands but if you can imagine a FROCKY HORROR SHOW that is going to bring a huge smile to your face then you will not be far wrong. The Gates at Ness Islands open at 6.30pm and the show ends at 8.30pm. ...At least the official part of the show ends at 8.30pm. If last year is anything to go by the pubs and clubs of Inverness are going to be filled with more than the usual quota of extremely interesting characters until the early hours. Wouldn’t it be great if Halloween was used as an excuse for every Hen Party the Highlands has ever seen to have a reunion in Inverness every year? Just a suggestion...

BONFIRE

The Council’s Civic Bonfire and Fireworks Display is one of the biggest shows of its kind staged in the United Kingdom – and judging by the bundles of ICA Awards votes that arrived last year, it is probably the most loved. Before the spectacular display by the award winning Fireworx Scotland Display Team, it is traditional for spectators to gather to watch Provost JIMMY GRAY light the Giant Bonfire that makes our Inverness celebration so special. Our November 5th event is unusual in that it is one the few displays being organised in Scotland which has a huge bonfire for spectators to enjoy and here in Inverness we are very lucky to have a team of specialists from the Highland Council’s Technical Services available to create a 40 to 50 foot beauty for us to enjoy. Now we know that Bonfire Building is not something that you would find in your average job specification, we checked at the Job Centre, so we wondered where the Council would experts from within their ranks to undertake such work. So step forward the Council Workers who look after the trees around our city and take a well deserved bow. We love our bonfire and thanks for putting on your safety harnesses, strapping yourself in and climbing up there to build it for us.

The Inverness Grand Bonfire and Fireworks Display will take place in Bught Park on Friday 5 November commencing at 7.30pm. There is disabled parking on site but once again other drivers are asked to allow themselves plenty of time to park away from the site and walk to the show.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON

This year’s Christmas Lights Switch On Ceremony will take place on Sunday 21 November and once again will feature a spectacular projection show created by Arts in Motion on the front of Inverness Town House. If you have not been before the show is highly recommended as each of the windows in the Town House is magically brought to life and dozens of wonderful characters can be seen peeping out at you. The Winter Festival Team are planning a number of surprises for us this year once Santa and his reindeer land on the secret Reindeer Parking space which is located just out of sight on the Town House Roof including a visit by characters from the Eden Court Pantomime Beauty and the Beast. The Switch On entertainment starts at 5.30pm and the Christmas Lights will be switched on at 6pm. Once the lights are on, everybody is invited to join Santa at St Stephen’s, the Old High Church in Church Street for the wonderful free Christmas Carol Concert “Ding Dong Merrily Old High” which will be attended by Santa. And if you were wondering where last year’s Chinese Lantern Launch has gone, Santa reported that the Reindeer were very upset that they could only see them in the distance as they flew in over Kessock Bridge. Which is why this year, the Chinese Lanterns will be launched at the Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland in Whin Park on December 11th and 12th. After all, who is going to risk getting no presents on Christmas morning by upsetting Rudolph and the gang?

RUDOLPH’S WINTER WONDERLAND

Following the success of last year’s visit by Rudolph and his reindeer pals to Whin Park which delighted so many of the smaller members of our community, the Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland event promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s Festival. Taking advantage of the shorter days to introduce some magical illuminated features am surprises into Whin Park to keep the reindeers company, the Winter Wonderland Show will be open from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday 11th December and Sunday 12th December. Don’t forget to bring your cameras and as usual don’t forget to dress up warmly!

HOGMANAY

The news that the Inverness Winter Festival team had to cancel last year’s Hogmanay party in Northern Meeting Park Arena was greeted with a huge collective sigh of disappointment across Inverness. There is no mystery as to why the chance to stay indoors and keep warm was not greeted with cheers - the line up for The Red Hot Highland Fling had been identified by those who know a good party when they see one as bursting with all the ingredients necessary for a good time. Well 12 months later, the dream is still alive and Inverness is still on course to have one of the best Hogmanay celebrations ever as Blazin Fiddles, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and the Peatbog Fairies are returning to unleash a ton of craic that is going to take us through to 2011 and beyond. We think that everybody involved with staging the show deserves your support because they have done a grand job in picking themselves up and having another go.

We will preview the show next month but for now, make sure that you make a date in your diary to be part of something really special.

FESTIVAL WHAT’S ON GUIDE

If you want to find out what is happening in Inverness during the Winter Festival don’t forget to visit the events listing at www.invernessfestivals.com. Powered by our very own ICA Listings– the Inverness Winter Festival Events Database is your essential guide to discovering all the things that you and the family can enjoy between Halloween and Hogmanay. Inverness is bursting with things for the whole family to enjoy if you spend a little bit of time finding out what is happening. With the Winter Festival Team, Eden Court Theatre, Inverness Business Improvement District, Eastgate Shopping Centre, The Ironworks, Cake, Hootananny, Ceol Mor, Market Bar, IGLU, The Phoenix, and more – all working hard to make Inverness – The Festive-Full City in the Highlands – we guarantee that you will always find something to warm your hearts on even the coldest winter day...

FESTIVAL MEMORIES

One of the great things about the advances that have been made in communications technology in the 21st Century is that it has never been easier to show your support for the Inverness Winter Festival programme than by sharing your festival memories. Posting your images and videos on the official Winter Festival website, YouTube, Facebook, Bebo and Flickr, to name but a few, is a great way to help the Festival Team spread the word about what is happening here in the Highlands.

TALK > EXTREME TALKING!

ANDY KIRKPATRICK @ Eden Court, Mon 15 Nov Last time he came to Eden Court, Kirkpatrick certainly lived up to his tag as the UK s only stand-up mountaineer , so even if you re not particularly interested in clambering up rocks, you ll still leave entertained. Mountaineering is, however, finding a whole new audience to the extent that the BBC s recent all day live coverage of a climb proved surprisingly gripping and its participants dynamic and engaging young chaps. Such was their enthusiasm and skill that you began to see the point of it all. And enthusiasm is certainly something that positively surges through Kirkpatrick, both for climbing itself and for spreading the word about why he does what he does. In the past that s included conquering the mighty El Capitan in Yosemite, a dramatic rescue from the north face of the Eiger and a near drowning at Cape Wrath, all of which you ll be able to hear about, along with a host of new tales and stunning footage of his adventures. All delivered in his own inimitable style. Should be most entertaining.

DOUG SCOTT @ Warehouse Theatre, Lossiemouth, Tue 09 Nov Andy Kirkpatrick might be a bit of an adventurer, but in climbing circles, Doug Scott is a living legend. Having made 45 expeditions to the high mountains of Asia, he has reached the summit of 40 peaks, of which half were climbed by new routes or for the first time in Alpine Style. Apart from his climb up the South West Face of Everest with Dougal Haston during Chris Bonington s Expedition of 1975, he has made all his climbs in lightweight or Alpine Style, without the use of artificial oxygen. And he s one of the few who has reached the highest peaks on all seven continents - the seven summits. A rare chance to see one of the true greats and hear all about his extraordinary life. thewarehousetheatre.co.uk

THEATRE > COMEDY > COMEDY NOVEMBER

THEATRE

For the second month running, there are enough comedy shows coming to town to suggest that, yeah, it really is the new rock n roll. And just like rock n roll it s easy for it to be dominated by the corporate juggernaut, with every tour filmed for an accompanying DVD. This month the roster of visiting comics spans generations and degrees of fame so you ll be able to see how they balance telling jokes with counting money. Economic concerns aside, there ll certainly be laughs aplenty.

JULIAN CLARY @ Ironworks, Wed 10 Nov Over a decade ago, Julian Clary made a terrifically off-colour impromptu gag about then chancellor Norman Lamont, which caused as much of a furore as Russell Brand s more recent Sachsgate scandal. At that point Clary was still something of a loose cannon, parlaying his incessant desire for double entendres into some sort of comedic genius. Since then he s been absorbed into the mainstream and, post Celebrity Come Dancing (fittingly a career move rather than another double entendre) finds himself something of a national treasure. He s 50 now and looking back on 25 years in the camp spotlight with a show entitled Lord of The Mince. It s been a smash not only all over the UK, but also in Australia and New Zealand, so ought to be honed within an inch of its life. That said, he still possesses a savage wit and you d be well advised not to try any heckles without being prepared to be destroyed. Warm hands on his entrance remarks are, though, virtually obligatory.

ALUN COCHRANE @ Ironworks, Thu 11 Nov 24 hours after Clary, it s the turn of Alun Cochrane to raise the laughs, but make sure you don t miss out on him. In fact Cochrane should be marked as an essential date in your diary as he s one of the finest young comics around. You ll probably have seen him doing the usual TV circuit of 8 Out Of Ten Cats, Comedy Roadshow, Mock The Week et al, but it s live that he s at his best. Check out his website at: www.aluncochrane.co.uk for a taste of what to expect.

JENNY ECLAIR @ Ironworks, Wed 17 Nov Like Julian Clary, Jenny Eclair is also 50 and a veteran of the comedy circuit, though she s not done herself too many favours with her regular involvement in the deeply annoying Grumpy Old Women project. This show goes under the name Old Dog, New Tricks and hopefully it ll allow her to show the skills and imagination that won her the Perrier way back in the mists of time, rather than trotting out complaints about not being able to operate the DVD recorder and policemen getting younger.

THEATRE > COMEDY > RHOD GILBERT @ Eden Court, Wed 24 Nov Rhod Gilbert has a magnificent, booming Welsh accent, which you’ll undoubtedly have heard on voiceovers in recent years. You might even have caught his new quiz/comedy show on BBC, though it doesn’t really do justice to the elegant rage that appears to whirl around his noggin. His most highly acclaimed show saw him punching a shop assistant in an argument over the duvet tog rating and this tour, given the oblique title The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst sees him once again having a shufty at anger management issues while cloaking proceedings in a breathtakingly inventive comedic style. If you don’t laugh your socks off, you’re the one at fault.

THEATRE > DANCE > Ignite

IGNITE @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 03 Nov

Eden Court is building something of a reputation for consistently promoting dance of the very highest order and they’re excelling themselves this month with a Scottish Youth Dance double bill courtesy of two of the country’s leading companies, YDance and Smallpetitklein. Celebrating masculinity, the whole programme is created and performed by male artists, providing an interesting new perspective on the spectacle of dance. First up is Touch Paper choreographed by Andy Howitt. It’s a narrative about five lads, Moko, Heggie, Malky, Zinc and Davo whose power struggle builds to a combustive crescendo. The piece explores the complexities of human relationships in a high energy, explosive combination of dance motifs and gestures. The second work of the night is Trigger choreographed by Thomas Small. Again it’s about (and performed by five men) with this time a volatile ember triggering “a menacing explosion of raw athleticism and ferocious energy.” It’s dance at breakneck speed demonstrating extraordinary power. For more about the companies, check out their websites at: www.ydance.org and www.smallpetitklein.com

THEATRE > PANTO SEASON BEGINS >

SLEEPING BEAUTY @ The Little Theatre, Nairn, Wed 24 Nov-11Dec It isn’t the panto season already. Oh yes it is! The biggest show of the year is obviously the Eden Court Panto which doesn’t begin until 07 Dec, so more about that in next month’s bumper Xmas issue, but we can reveal that it’s going to be Beauty and The Beast, so get your thoughts in order about couples you know where one person is a looker and the other appears to have been biffed with the ugly stick. In the meantime, the first folk to be giving you your panto fix is Nairn Drama Club, who present the classic story of the princess who sleeps for a hundred years. It’s written by David Swan, directed by Lee Cruikshank and choreographed by Kayleigh MacRae. There are lots of special offers for pre-theatre meals and the like for those attending, so find out more at nairndrama.org.uk

A CHRISTMAS CAROL @ The Universal Hall, Findhorn, Fri 03 Dec Has anyone ever done a stage production of It’s A Wonderful Life? Maybe it would be sacrilege to try to approximate such a classic movie, but it’s certainly one of the best tales of how your life would pan out differently if you changed your behaviour, something that always seems to be particularly resonant as one year ends and another begins. Perhaps the best example of such a story is Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, something which has been remade by everyone from comedians to Muppets and still always delights. And this adaptation looks like being particularly splendid. Presented by Strangeface, who were a big hit at Universal Hall with The Last Resort in 2008 it has eccentric masks on human actors, wild puppets, a magical set and spooky soundscapes combining to create an entrancing brew that is both moving and comic. Suitable for all but the very young. findhorn.org/uhall

THEATRE > FIGARO, VAMPIRES & JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR>

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 04 & Sat 06 Nov

Following last month s gorgeous production of Carmen, Scottish Opera are back with another classic from the operatic canon in the form of Mozart s magnificent Marriage Of Figaro. Internationally renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen directs this masterpiece, packed with breathtaking arias, great characters and moments of real humour, with big names like Thomas Oliemans, Roderick Williams and Kate Valentine taking the major roles. There will be a pre-performance talk on Sat 06 at 6pm and, even better, on Wed 03 at 6pm, there s an unwrapped performance , an hour long taster giving you the chance to see why it s such a much-loved opera. You ll hear some highlights, be introduced to the major characters and guided through the plot, a great way to be introduced to the world of fat lady singing and stuff. A brilliant initiative and, best of all, it s free. Just get your ticket when you buy your brief for the main show. eden-court.co.uk

VAMPIRES ROCK @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 18 Nov

Rapidly becoming something of an institution at Eden Court, this rock n roll musical is always a hit when it comes to town with songs from the likes of Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf, Led Zeppelin and AC/ DC. Toyah Wilcox returns as the Devil Queen and Steve Steinman delivers his trademark powerful vocals amid the pyrotechnics and spectacular dance routines.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR AUDITIONS

Starlight Musical Theatre are offering the opportunity to participate in their exciting new production of Jesus Christ Superstar in August 2011 at Eden Court. They are a new amateur musical theatre group and we will soon be holding initial workshops in preparation for casting the production. 1EATING OUT:

The Review: NICO’S 8–15 NESS BANK INVERNESS 01463 234308 A long-established fixture on the Inverness dining scene, NICO’S is something of a destination restaurant, with plenty of visitors coming to town specifically to eat there. This represents our 2nd attempt to run our gastronomic rule over the place - last year we we turned up for review only to find Nico’s closed - although we did get to eat in the adjoining hotel, the Glen Mhor. Nico’s is - if you’ll pardon the pun - a different kettle of fish altogether, exclusively offering a high-end dining experience with something of a reputation for its seafood. Aside from oddly Americanised phrases and spellings (“Encouraging them [guests]be fully open to the fruits of our labor”), their website promises “fresh, locally sourced produce that underlines our commitment to quality Socttish

cuisine”. Well, that latter sentence is certainly to be applauded and we’re also rather taken by the claim that “our head chef, has a laboratory to try out ideas and new signature creations”. We’re picturing some sort of Heston Blumenthal affair, where Haggis Ice Cream and Neeps’n’Tatties lollipops are conjured up using test tubes and Bunsen burners. Thankfully the reality isn’t quite as crazyas that, and the place - billed as a Seafood And Grill House - has all the old-school atmosphere that such a label implies. Wood-panelling is the order of the day, both in the Bistro itself and the adjoining bar, only the colourful fish tank taking away from the cosy low-lit atmosphere. At lunchtime there are only a handful of other people dining, but it’s obvious from the number of tables that evenings must be busy. Thankfully the layout of the room means that there are plenty of nooks to lend it a sense of intimacy.

There’s no set lunch menu (though there is an early evening pre-theatre one and weekly Steak Nights), so in the absence of table d’hôte, we are talking à la carte today. Coupled with the fact that this place prides itself on the quality of its ingredients and dishes, you know we’re not looking at an express ‘lunch under a tenner’ here - with starters around the six quid mark and mains fifteen, we’re looking forward to some reassuringly top-notch cooking. That chef had better have been putting in the hard yards in the laboratory! To begin I have Moules Mariniere, a good opportunity to test Nico’s reputation for seafood and I’m not disappointed. Served in a frightfully modern stainless steel bowl, there’s certainly no skimping on portion size and, more importantly, it’s cooked to perfection. West Coast mussels are plump and moist, 53

their juices enhanced by the creamy garlic emulsion, the whole seasoned beautifully. A deceptively simple dish, it’s also one that is easy to get very, very wrong, usually resulting in rubbery bullets swathed in grit. No chance of that here, just a reminder that some flavours are timeless. The best mussels I’ve ever had? Pretty close. My companion kicks off with Smoked Duck Salad, an elaborate array of ingredients that includes not only pink slices of duck, but also - deep breath - Sesame Seeds, Radish, Beansprouts, Spring Onion & Watercress with Ginger & Soy Sauce Dressing. An ambitious combination but one which works well - aided by immaculate presentation - the light salads providing a lift, the soy & ginger adding some ‘zing’. It’s a confident start to proceedings and an immediate demonstration that the chef has real talent.

56

My main course of Surf ’n’Turf looks just

as enticing, but somehow the whole doesn’t match up to the sum of its parts. I’ll admit that this might be my fault, because the entire concept of combining steak and seafood could well be faintly ridiculous in the first place. You wouldn’t have a beefburger and fish finger sandwich, so why should the flavour combinations work, albeit at the other end of the culinary scale? A question of taste, then. The “surf ” element comes courtesy of a trio of crevettes - beautifully tasting but, very nearly literally - all mouth and no trousers, the morsels of sweet flesh hard to winkle from the eggs’n’endless legs that take up most of the carapace. And, really, the presence of the shellfish adds nothing to that of the fullflavoured piece of well-matured steak. Cooked precisely medium-rare just as requested, it’s again a show of how the kitchen does simple things well and an advertisement for the high quality of the main ingredient. Alas it’s

accompanied by a rather grainy and claggy creamed potato, again not really adding anything to the meat at the heart of the dish. Perhaps I’d have been better off with the turf and nothing else. My companion has Venison Loin, again embroiled in the nowadays customary elaborate description: “Stuffed* with Black Pudding, Wrapped in Serrano Ham, with Celeriac Puree, Black Pudding, Caramelized Apple and a natural Jus”. (*The loin is not actually stuffed - the black pudding sits aside on the plate). The venison itself gets the thumbs up, particularly for not being as robustly gamey as previous experiences he’s had with perhaps the most iconic meat the Highlands has to offer, but admits that the rest of the dish, though again gorgeously presented, offers a surfeit of richness. “Five forkfuls and I feel like my stomach is about to burst” he confesses. It’s a bold interpretation of a classic combination, if a little too bold for my colleague.

For pudding, I have Dark Chocolate Marbled Cheesecake, the superior baked variety rather than the lazy just-mix-it-all-with-a-bit-of-Philly-and-leaveit-in-the-fridge version that you might find at some other joints around town. Baked cheesecake has a much more satisfyingly airy texture and a lovely crust, although perhaps something so sweet and rich is not perfectly suited to the accompanying Chantilly Cream, itself an unashamedly sugary confection. Cranachan is something that certainly ought to appear on more menus and it’s surprising that something so simple and crowd pleasing seems to have become somewhat underappreciated. Not by my companion though, who’s delighted to see that the boffin in the lab has come up with a unique take on it in the form of Cranachan Parfait With Honey Syrup, Homemade Shortbread & Summer Berries. It’s an accomplished creation, the Cranachan flavours of whisky, cream and raspberries working well when incorporated into the frozen parfait and the homemade shortbread is a delight. Blueberries put in a welcome appearance and it ends the meal on a skilful high. So, nice food then, using top ingredients and exquisitely put together - with some real successes, particularly the sublime mussels and the Cranachan parfait. Not somewhere you’re going to get a 3 course meal for two for under a pony (oh, alright: less than £25! - Ed), but if not you’re too recession-hit (or are good at saving for a special occasion), then you will be rewarded with a memorable meal, as long time regulars will testify. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £56.25

Making the most of YOU. The Importance of Minerals (continued from last month’s ICA) from Julie Dow at Body & Face Place What is mineral make-up? Rather than being oil or petroleum-based, true mineral makeup is made of earthen minerals, milled to a very fine powder. Why is mineral makeup better than traditional makeup? Mineral cosmetics reflect light - like millions of tiny diamond mirrors - to hide fine lines and discolorations. Unlike traditional cosmetics, which coat the skin with a layer of film, mineral makeup allows your skin to breathe and function naturally. Some mineral make-up brands aren’t totally pure and are thus misleading. There are however companies that are 100% mineral based and therefore free from chemicals and synthetic ingredients such as alcohol, artificial fragrance, mineral oil, talc, or petroleum. Making the most of YOU. [ health • style • beauty • fitness ] The Importance of Minerals - Continued >>

High quality mineral makeup should not clog pores, and should feel like you have no makeup on at all. Why use a mineral make-up? Made of micronized, highly reflective crystals, mineral cosmetics reflect light to smooth fine lines and blemishes, since mineral cosmetics are made with pigments from the earth, they’re much healthier than cosmetics containing petroleum dyes.

Mineral cosmetics also have sun protective properties, so they keep your skin healthy and youthful. Minerals do not support the growth of bacteria or microbes, and pose a lower risk of allergic reaction. In fact, minerals are great for use on skin recovering from harsh medical procedures, and on problem skin conditions like rosacea, acne, and discolouration. Because of the many advantages of mineral cosmetics, it’s no wonder they’re the hottest makeup trend today. A selection of celebrities choose to use 100% mineral based make up, these celebrities include, Cheryl Cole, Denise Van Outen, Arlene Philips, Alexandra Burke, Speech Debelle, Pamela Anderson, if it’s good enough for them...

GERALD COOPER MEMORIAL CUP

We caught up with Hugh Campbell, winner of the Gerald Cooper Memorial Cup, awarded to the fastest Highlands based finisher in the Loch Ness Marathon. What was your time & were you happy with it? I had a good run and enjoyed taking part in one of the UKs most scenic marathons. My time was 2 hours 30 minutes and 12 seconds, 6th place overall and first highland finisher.

HOUSING MARKET: Property sales continue to turn over in the Highlands, with the HSPC s September sales figures showing a 7% increase on the number of houses sold same time last year. The rolling quarterly average house price comes in at 1% down compared to same time last year, this is likely the affects of the pressure from the high numbers of properties for sale on the market. HSPC s figures for numbers of properties for sale is currently sitting at over 1100, a record high, and an increase on September 2009 of 10%. So it s still a good time for buyers with plenty to choose from.

I read it s good to pick three targets before a race, a minimum goal, an expected goal and a breakthrough goal. My minimum goal was to break 2 hours and 40 minutes, a time I felt from my training I was more than capable of. My expected goal, a time I expected I would run was 2.32 and a breakthrough goal would be anything below 2 hours and 30 minutes. So to run only 12 seconds over my breakthrough goal I m more than happy, especially as this

was my debut marathon performance. This was your first marathon - was it a conversion from couch potato to marathon runner? My transition to running came through a background in football. After University I decided to start running to get fit enough to compete for a place in the local football team. I started running 2 miles, 5 times a week and eating a healthy diet. I became a starting player of the football team. We went on to do a clean sweep of the domestic honours of the local football league and cups in 2008. I ran my first ever competitive race this year - a 10k with a very steep mile long hill in the middle. I ended up winning in a respectable 37 minutes, a course record. It was then I realised I may have a talent for running and I started to focus on that more so than the football. I upped my training mileage, and won several other local 10ks. My first big race win was the Isle of Skye half

marathon. I won the race in 1 hour 12 minutes and 6 seconds, becoming the first ever local resident to win the race and setting a course record for a local competitor, beating the previous best by 8 minutes. After that I felt I wanted to really test myself and took on the huge challenge of Marathon. I felt that winning the prize of fastest Highland finisher in the Lochness Marathon would be a nice way to end my debut running season. So I entered, and on the day ran well and achieved my goals. Do you have plans for any other marathon runs elsewhere? My Lochness time qualifies me for a Championship entry at the London Marathon. I am keen to do this as I have heard the crowds at London are amazing. Also London is a very flat course so hopefully I could knock a few minutes of my time set at Lochness. In the future I hope to compete in a Marathon abroad.

sponsored by HSPC.co.uk

What s your favourite music to listen to when you re flagging on a run? I don t listen to music anymore, however when I did I used to like to listen to a good rock song such as Foo Fighters ‒ The Pretender to give me that mental boost to keep going. Did you struggle at any point during the marathon? Mile 25 I suppose was where I had to really dig deep. I felt I was running on empty, I couldn t really feel my legs and from here to the finish it was a case of keeping going with whatever mental and physical strength I could find. I could see the 5th place finisher 12 seconds ahead of me, however I couldn t get my legs to move any faster. What was the best bit of the course? Probably the middle section where it was relatively flat and you could take time to admire the view across the Loch. At this point the rain also stopped briefly and I was running with a runner who finished 7th and we were

able to have a quick chat! Was it worth all the effort? I feel it was. The marathon is all about setting your-self a big challenge and trying to achieve it. Whether you re a runner at the front or a walker at the back, the marathon is a larger than life challenge and completing it is a very respectable achievement. Not only the Marathon itself, but getting through the training to get to the race is often the hardest part. Finding the will power to drag yourself out early on a Saturday morning to complete a 20 mile run in the rain is the commitment it takes to finish a marathon. What made it all worth it was crossing the finishing line, crowd cheering having achieved a time I could only have dreamed of at the start of the year. Seeing months of training pay off is a great feeling. I d also like to thank my employers

The eminent veteran director Costa-Gavras, an emigrant to France from Greece, has called Eden Is West his “most personal film.” His lead character is kindly, smart and opportunistic, not perhaps unlike the director as a young man. Along a circuitous route that involves men and women who use, abuse or help our hero, the young man has a series of adventures that shake but don’t topple credibility, as he eats, sleeps, and learns – while always on the run.

Now that Joaquin Phoenix has finally admitted that this film is indeed a hoax, I’m not sure what category to put it in – Mockumentary? Nah, it’s quite simply a brilliant bit of entertainment. Following his Oscar nominated role in Walk The Line, Joaquin continues to shine but this time as a bearded, overweight hip hop wanabee. The buzz around this film all started when he appeared on the Letterman show earlier in the year incoherent and mumbling (it turns out now that he was actually in character and Letterman had absolutely no idea!) Everyone’s talking about it so come and see what the fuss is all about!

You come by one; perhaps it’s your birthday and you’ve been given it as a gift; maybe you did someone a favour, looked after a neighbour’s cat or watered their begonia whilst they were on holiday, and by way of a thank you they gave you a cake; or maybe, you’ve just gone ahead and bought yourself a cake because you feel you deserved it, or even if you don’t deserve it it’s your money and if you want a cake who’s going to stop you. Whichever of the above is true the key point is that you now have your cake. Obviously what you do next with the cake is eat it, it’s why the baker made the cake, it’s why you bought it, were given it as a gift or whatever. You have your cake and eat it. There’s nothing at all greedy about having a cake and eating it, as I said before it’s what cakes are for. What would be greedy would be if somehow after eating your cake you could make, and have it granted, a wish such as you still had the cake you’d just consumed. That would be a greedy wish to make. The moral of the story is of course, if you’re going to use worn-out clichés make sure you get them right, the correct insult is “you want to eat your cake and (still) have it”. Recently a lady stopped me in the street to ask if I had a light for her cigarette, I know what you’re thinking - “here goes a long tirade about smokers arrogantly assuming that everyone else is a smoker too and won’t mind being stopped in the rain whilst they make you search for your lighter and fumble in the wind to light their fag” - well no, this isn’t that story. Indeed I only mention the lady because she said “I don’t suppose you have a light do you?” in such a friendly manner that I felt a bit guilty at not being able to help her out. Also the incident reminded me of a time at college when I shared a sort of bed-sit with a couple of other people, one of whom was a smoker. The bed sit wasn’t terribly well equipped and had no oven or toaster

and certainly back then, no microwave. All that the area we laughably referred to as the kitchen had, was a sink, a small fridge and a Rowenta kettle. Not that the brand of kettle was important to its function, but back then, as a student, having a genuine Rowenta was something to brag about. Any road up, I came home one day to a distraught flatmate who was clean out of matches and had no gas for his lighter. “Have you got a light?” He asked me - “no, I don’t smoke”, I told him for like the millionth time, “maybe there’s something in the kitchen you could use”. He scurried off to the scullery. I had meant he might just be able to light his cigarette by holding it against the bare 100 Watt light bulb - and had expected to go through to find him perched on a stool with his hands in the air. Instead I found him fag in mouth anxiously pressing the tip of it against a frantically boiling kettle. Disturbing thing was, he was studying for a degree in engineering. Not sure what happened to him after college, but heard a rumour recently that he might be designing bridges for the commonwealth games in Delhi. KEN

JO TURNS CHILDHOOD HOBBY INTO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS Many people dream of turning their hobby into a business but one Auldearn woman has made it a reality. Jo Barr, 41, decided to start selling her own handmade jewellery after friends and family kept asking her to make them necklaces and bracelets. Now with the help of Business Gateway she has set up Acqua Jewellery (www.acquajewellery. co.uk) offering collections of unique items and a bespoke service. Ever since she was a little girl living in the south of France, Jo has been fascinated with beads and in making her own pieces of jewellery. She continued to make beaded items as a hobby but after her two children went to school, Jo found that she had time on her hands and decided to do something for herself. She said: “After growing up in the south of France and working in several multi cultural environments, I have, over the years, been admiring all the beautiful jewellery that people have been wearing and have used these influences in what I now make. I never thought that I would end up setting up my own business selling them. I would wear pieces of jewellery that I have made, and friends and family offered encouragement to make more. It is then that I started making jewellery for other people. “Once my two children were at school I wanted to do something for myself so I began making more and more to meet the demand and that’s when I decided to start up the Company. Everything we sell is handmade locally with the use of Silver Plate, Sterling Silver and Thai Silver made with semi-precious gemstones, freshwater pearls, Swarovski elements as well as beads, nuts and seeds from all over the world. So far I’ve been ecstatic about the response. I want to keep on making stunning pieces and develop the bespoke nature of the business.” Although Jo had previous business experience, she went along to her local Business Gateway office for support. She added: “They have been great and I have learned so much from their workshops. Even just going over the basics is worth it and it’s really reassuring to know they are always there.” Mark MacKintosh, Regional Development Officer, Business Gateway Inverness office said: “Jo took full advantage of our free services. She attended as many of our workshops that she could and through them gained invaluable advice that she uses in the day-to-day running of her business. Despite having business experience Jo attended these in order to refresh her knowledge and skills and is now reaping the rewards.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses.
