Now firmly established as one of Scotland’s favourite family Halloween events; another bumper crowd is expected to dress up and head to the banks of the River Ness to discover what’s lurking in the darkness as the 2017 Inverness Winter Festival makes a welcome return. This official theme is “Underworld” and spectators brave enough to step on to Ness Islands can expect to be taken on a magical journey created by of Eden Court Creative and Arts in Motion down into the very heart and soul of everything they have ever been afraid of… This collaborative community event couldn’t take place without the support and expertise of all those involved—including the Inverness Common Good Fund and Limelights Event Services. And, of course, you—young and old alike, dressed up, dressed down, families & friends. We looking forward to seeing you all there again this year!

Halloween Show, Ness Islands Sat 28 Oct 6.30-8.30pm | Sun 29 Oct Sun 5.30–7.30pm One of the most spook-tacular shows you will find in Scotland with thousands of locals dressing up to discover what is lying in wait on Ness Islands. Admission is free (if you dare).

ORLD Awaits... !!

e year!! Halloween Show, Ne ss Islands, 28 /29 Octob er.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: Island 1: JOURNEY TO THE UNDERWORLD Cross the bridge from the Bught Park side to Island 1 and begin your journey towards the Underworld: Step through the graveyard gates guarded by Hades Oracles, who will whisper warnings in your ears should you pause long enough to hear or heed them. Make haste to the Celtic Samhain Festival, where ancient pagans honour the end of the harvest and hark winters approach. Tread carefully and try not to disturb the Plague Doctors as they prepare the dead for their final descent into darkness. Let’s hope they don’t mistake you for one of their cadavers… Over the bridge to Island 2: ENTERING THE UNDERWORLD NB: Passing through the trees and into the main amphitheatre will be scary. If you want to avoid this section you can go round the amphitheatre. Island 2 marks your entry into the Underworld. Pass through the Harpies Wood unscathed to reach the main amphitheatre... True terror awaits as you are invited to witness The Mexican Day of the Dead in the centre of our Netherworld, with its haunted lands of the remembered, and the living. Keep your wits about you journey past the Japanese Goddess of the Underworld, Yomi as her demons lurk close by. Are you brave enough to make it through the Otherworld and survive?... Will you make your escape to the land of the living?... We dare you to try!

Imagine the scene: Ronson is slumped back in his controlroom chair, feet up on the mixer, fag hanging off his bottom lip. Pharrell glides in, hi-fives his engineer and dumps his man-purse on the desk. In the studio, Sheeran plinks perkily away on the Steinway, Bieber is throwing shapes trying to impress Swift, draped languidly across the piano. And then, to top it all, in bustles Beyoncé, all sass and perfume and bluster. Before too long, they’re riffing and jamming away, knocking out renditions of pop classics and each other’s songs. Ronson suddenly realises he should record all this for posterity… Well, on Tuesday 4th of December 1956, this pretty much happened—only with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash perfoming together, engineer was Jack Clement, producer was Sun Records founder, Sam Phillips. That Million-DollarQuartet recording became part of rock’n’roll folklore and is celebrated in a musical theatre show of the same name— with Martin Kemp playing Phillips. Just so’s you know...

ART Stag Do. If you watched BBC’s recent Fake Or Fortune? series, an apparent excuse for Fiona Bruce to travel to exotic locations around the world under the guise of investigating the authenticity of viewers’ paintings, you might have caught an episode that mentioned the vast art collection accrued by a Victorian whisky baron, the most notable piece in which was THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN, Landseer’s iconic depiction of a stag that has become something of a ubiquitous representation of Scotland in general. The painting was acquired for the nation earlier this year and it’s now going on tour around the country and at IMAG until 18 NOV. It’s a rare opportunity to see a piece of art that’s defined notions of the Highlands around the world since Victorian times. And, perhaps more importantly, one heck of a beautiful picture. For the Inverness presentation, High Life Highland’s Exhibition Unit have commissioned a new work, AFTER THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN, REAL LIFE IS DEAD [1], from contemporary artist ROSS SINCLAIR in response to Landseer’s original painting. Sinclair is particularly interested in the nature of identity—what is it and how is it formed. His own body became a tool in his art 1994 when he had the words ‘REAL LIFE’ tattooed across his shoulders (no doubt enraging the “that’s not art” brigade everywhere). Since then, his ‘Real Life’ projects have taken many forms. Several have featured Sinclair himself, photographed or filmed with his back to the camera. He has made works using a multitude of materials and methods including posters, billboards, slogan t-shirts, neon signs, videos, performances and paintings. More unfettered representations of these parts come at EDEN COURT and their ROOM WITH A VIEW [2] exhibition running throughout October wherein local artists Fiona Matheson, Katherine Sutherland and Clare Blois present paintings on a large scale to celebrate the Highlands in all its grandeur. All three take a bold approach to oil painting and are inspired by the scale and raw beauty of the northern landscape.

VERNON JONES & MARGARET GARDINER, to 30 Sep AN UNEXPECTED TWIST, Contemporary Stone Sculpture From Zimbabwe & Paintings By John Wilson, 6-28 Oct. For artist, JOHN WILSON, 1979 was a momentous year. He suffered a catastrophic stroke which paralysed his right arm. With extensive physiotherapy and sheer determination he fought back to re-establish himself as a professional artist based in Nairn, working mainly in gouache on paper. The integrity of the initial ZIMBABWE SCULPTURE movement (dating from the 1950’s) has been greatly compromised by mass produced ‘airport art’, formed from less durable stone such as soapstone, which has served to mask the works of the truly individual and creative sculptors. However, discerning collectors of Zimbabwean sculpture and promoters of genuine sculptors have been working tirelessly to bring quality works to international attention. castlegallery.co.uk

RICHARD WAITT, to 31 Oct, An exciting and groundbreaking exhibition on the 18th century artist, Richard Waitt. This special exhibition explores the turbulent and intriguing world of a Highland clan at the time of the Jacobites. Waitt’s portraits of the people of Castle Grant hang in Scotland’s most prestigious national galleries and properties. Museum Manager Daniel Cottam said: “Needless to say we are pretty excited here at the Museum to be able to show you what will be the first ever public exhibition solely dedicated to Richard Waitt”. Waitt was employed in 1713 by the Chief of Clan Grant to paint his family and retinue, what is now recognised as the biggest ever single commission of family portraits in 18th century Europe. THE MONARCH OF THE GLEN, 06 Oct to 18 Nov, The Monarch of the Glen is one of the most famous British pictures of the nineteenth century; for many people it encapsulates the grandeur and majesty of Scotland’s highlands and wildlife. Painted by Edwin Landseer, it depicts a monumental and precisely defined ‘royal’ or twelve point stag, it became widely admired in nineteenth century, when it was reproduced in prints, and achieved even greater renown in the twentieth century when it was employed as a marketing image for various products, so endowing it with global recognition. The iconic painting was acquired for the nation in March 2017 after a high-profile fundraising campaign. Between October 2017 and May 2018 it will go on show in Inverness, Perth, Paisley and Kirkcudbright. Tour organised by the National Galleries of Scotland, with support from Scottish Government, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Art Fund.

Wheat and Chaff… This is the start of the period when the movie industry makes its earliest moves for Oscar glory—whilst there may in fact have been many superior films released from earlier in the year, if something breaks big from now to the year’s end, it might just stick in the minds of the academy voters and will always encourage press-chat of awards. And you can see them coming a mile off; here’s a film about a disadvantaged person (usually played by a particularly undisadvantaged person) overcoming adversity; there’s a true-life drama about a regular joe hero (usually played by a particularly non-regular joe); here’s a rose-tinted-or-gritty study of a moment or person from history; there’s a ground-breaking animation; and here’s a well-meaning facing-up-to-our-inglorious-past study. And whilst we can’t condemn them all out of hand, the seeming lack of originality—and the apparently cynical choosing—of the premises, raises a hackle of suspicion of many a film fan. So, whilst THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US [6] (06 Oct Vue, 20 Oct EC), 6 BELOW [7] (13 Oct Vue), JUNGLE [8] (19 Oct Vue), GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN [9] (20 Oct EC), BREATHE [10] (27 Oct Vue), BORG VS MCENROE [11] (27 Oct EC), THE GLASS CASTLE [12] (06 Oct Vue), and LOVING VINCENT [13] (09 Oct EC) might actually be excellent, their mere appearance at this time smells of oscar bait. Varying degrees of struggling against the harsh perils of nature define the first three, starring KATE WINSLET with IDRIS ELBA, JOSH HARTNETT, and DANIEL RADCLIFFE respectively. DOMNHALL GLEESON plays Pooh creator A.A. Milne, ANDREW GARFIELD plays real-life polio-paralysed Robin Cavendish, SHIA LEBEOUF and SVERRIR GUDNASON bring the famed 1980 tennis rivals to life and BRIE LARSON is the conflicted daughter of parents WOODY HARRELSON and NAOMI WATTS in an adaptation of Jeanette Walls’ memoir, in the following trio. Loving Vincent is the ‘world’s first fully painted’ animation—all 65,000 frames being an oil painting in the ‘style’ of Van Gogh—a clever innovation perhaps, but leaving much to be desired, the trailer suggests. But here are FIVE rock-solid viewing recommendations for you to consider this month. Regardless of awards-worthiness or age, we think you will find much to enjoy and admire about all these. And, rather neatly, they all but one fall a week apart, starting with the patience-rewarding sequel, BLADE RUNNER 2049 [1] (06 Oct EC & Vue). Retaining the grizzled charm of HARRISON FORD’s Deckard from the original, with the new era attraction of RYAN GOSLING plus DAVE BAUTISTA, ROBIN WRIGHT and JARED LETO. The following week (13 Oct) sees THE VILLAINESS (Ak-Nyeo) [2] come to Eden Court. This is likely to be THE action movie of the year—redolent in differing degree of classics Old Boy, Nikita, John Wick, Kill Bill and of Hardcore Henry (!)—if you like action and adrenaline, do yourself a serious favour and see it. By Oct 20 we’ll assume you’ll just about have your breath back—and you’re going to need it, especially if you’re brave enough to expose yourself to Darren Aronofsky’s extraordinary MOTHER! [3] (EC)—a psychologically exhausting horror/drama with the awesome JENNIFER LAWRENCE and JAVIER BARDEM and their unexpected house guests including ED HARRIS and MICHELLE PFEIFFER. Everyone’s talking about it—no-one knows how to describe it! If you’ve managed all three so far, we think you deserve a bit of easy entertainment for the final week—you can choose between the surprisingly comedic Marvel Thor franchise with THOR: RAGNAROK [4] (27 Oct Vue)—helmed this time with the supreme delicate touch of Taika Waititi, whose What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople were instant comedy classics—or a re-issued new-noir classic, the supreme Coen Brothers’ 1984 debut, BLOOD SIMPLE: DIRECTOR’S CUT [5] (27/28 Oct EC), which set the darkly funny tone for all that was to come. So if you go to see any other movie than these five this month and don’t like it, just don’t blame us. In fact, let us know if you loved anything else. What else is there? Well, reflecting the times—both Halloween and recent hurricane and earthquake tragedies—are four films to enjoy/endure. MICHAEL FASSBENDER tops a great

13

cast including REBECCA FERGUSON, CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG, VAL KILMER and J.K. SIMMONS in a chillying Scandi-noir kind of Zodiac-type serial killer flick, THE SNOWMAN [14] (13 Oct Vue, 27 Oct EC), whilst Saw fans will already be drooling at the prospect of a post-death JIGSAW (19 Oct Vue). HAPPY DEATH DAY [15] (19 Oct Vue) is a watch-at-halloween-only ‘livedie-repeat’ thriller with Jessica Rothe and Ruby Modine (Matthew’s daughter, fact fans) and, perhaps the greatest horror of all of these, GERARD BUTLER in eco-weather-disaster movie, GEOSTORM [16] (19 Oct Vue)—which might well get put back due to recent events (might depend how Irma pans out from time of writing), but from the trailer looks so dumb it might be fun. Weather warning: it might not ! Halloween was originally for the kids—and they’re not forgotten with at least one spooky-themed animation, THE LITTLE VAMPIRE [17] (13 Oct Vue), and two big franchise efforts, MY LITTLE PONY, THE MOVIE (19 Oct Vue) and, perhaps more keenly anticipated, THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE (07 Oct EC previews & 13 Oct Vue). Also some film seasons at Eden Court to highlight—India On Film (IOF), celebrating the 70th anniversary of India’s independence with six films from 04 Oct–08 Nov, the tenth Scottish Mental Health Film & Arts Festival (SHMAFF) with five screenings between 12–29 Oct; and InFiFa’s SIDNEY LUMET trio of films (03, 17, 31 Oct).

KIDS Stories, Slapstick & Snails Highlight of the month is the HALLOWEEN SHOW at NESS ISLANDS on 28 & 29 OCT which you can read more about in our Specials section, but before that EDEN COURT once again comes up trumps with a plethora of shows for kids and family. First up, on 10 & 11 OCT it’s HAIRY MACLARY [1] based on the book “Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy” by Lynley Dodd. Featuring many of the characters from the books like Hercules Morse (“as big as a Horse”), Bottomley Potts (“covered in spots”), Schnitzel von Krumm, (“with the very low tum”) and Scarface Claw, whose name doesn’t rhyme with his defining quality, but is most certainly the toughest tomcat in town. With music, singing and several favourite Hairy Maclary stories, it should be rather good. Another much loved adventure is that of THE THREE MUSKETEERS [2] and Dumas’ yarn is a very loose starting point for CBeebies comedy trio Three Half Pints’ show which involves much slapstick and enjoyable daftness. It’s at EC on 16 OCT. THE STORY OF THE LITTLE GENTLEMAN is firmly aimed at the very young being a simple tale about the little gentleman of the title looking for a pal. An energetic twohander with an original score by Danny Krass and design by Karen Tennent, this is a playful celebration of friendship and acceptance. All the above take place in the One Touch theatre, but never ones to resist making use of the whole venue, the Eden Court folk are hosting ADVENTURES OF SNIGEL [3] on 13 OCT which takes the audience on a journey all around the place as a curious snail called Snigel goes in search of the source of some mysterious bubbles. It’s a new collaboration between performance artist and choreographer CAROLINE BOWDITCH (former Dance Agent for Change, Scottish Dance Theatre and creator of Falling in Love with Frida), designer and technician LAURA HOOK (Birmingham Royal Ballet, Birmingham Hippodrome Sadler’s Wells, Wayne Sables Project), and musician and sound designer ZAC SCOTT (Behind Closed Doors, Paragon Music).

Great Oaks. Inverness plays host to a true club legend this month when PAUL OAKENFOLD [1] comes to IRONWORKS on 06 OCT. Not only was he one of the small gang of pals responsible for bringing modern notions of clubbing to the UK after a lads’ holiday in Ibiza back in the day, but he’s been a producer, record maker, label boss and, of course, enduringly top-notch DJ. Make sure to bow down in between waving your arms in the air. And bookend the month with another clubbing icon as Lars Sandberg aka FUNK D’VOID [2] bring his party vibes to the intimate surroundings of TOOTH & CLAW on 28 OCT. Expect sweat. A host of big names at EDEN COURT in October are headlined by ELAINE PAIGE [3] on 23 OCT. Pretty much the queen of musical theatre, she’s still often underappreciated as an interpreter of song, so this should give her a chance to demonstrate just how engaging she can be. What Paige does with words, YOLANDA BROWN [4] does with music. As the one of the UK’s premier saxophonists, she mixes jazz, soul and reggae with some aplomb, which is why she’s worked with many of the greats across a spectrum of genres. She’s at EC on 13 OCT. MALCOLM BRUCE [5] has not only worked with greats, but is also the son of one of them. His dad was Jack Bruce from Cream and the musical talent seems to have been passed down in the DNA if Bruce Jnr’s success is anything to go by. He brings his band to EDEN COURT on 09 OCT There’s always a big audience for country music up here, particularly that from Ireland that invariably brings on board pop and that land’s traditional influences, so no surprise that NATHAN CARTER [6] is booked in for five nights at EDEN COURT from 25–29 OCT. If that’s your bag you’ll undoubtedly be well rewarded. Singer songwriters dominate the musical landscape these days and several regular visitors to the Highlands are back this month purveying their twists on the style. LUCY SPRAGGAN [7] (EC, 19 OCT) found fame on the X Factor, but has managed to transcend any notions of manufactured pop with her smart creations, while FINDLAY NAPIER [8] demonstrated at the EC Between The Lines event a couple of years back that he’s a master of the songwriting craft. Catch him at ABRIACHAN HALL on 04 OCT (with BELLA HARDY) and Aviemore’s OLD BRIDGE INN on 19 OCT. If you still need a man-with-guitar fix after all that, head to BOGBAIN FARM on 25 OCT for NEWTON FAULKNER [9]. Blas may have finished, but there’s still lots more traditional music on offer, the centrepiece being BLAZIN’ IN BEAULY [10] from 09–13 OCT. Run by the band Blazin Fiddles, this is a music school with classes, masterclasses, talks, ceilidhs and sessions. Principal classes are in Highlands & Islands fiddle music with additional classes in guitar, piano, singing, percussion and group work. And if that tickles your fancy, you’ll no doubt be excited about seeing SESSION A9 [11] at EDEN COURT on 25 OCT, the traditional supergroup featuring not only MARC CLEMENT from the aforementioned Blazin’ Fiddles, but also a host of others including CHARLIE MCKERRON (Capercaillie), GORDON GUNN, ADAM SUTHERLAND (Treacherous Orchestra) and KEVIN HENDERSON (Fiddlers’ Bid, Boys of the Lough). Finally, a word for BBC SSO at EC on 13 OCT, Edinburgh band VISTAS at TOOTH & CLAW on 06 OCT and the return to these parts of SCOUTING FOR GIRLS at IRONWORKS on 31 OCT.

SPECIALS Underworld Adventures. The annual HALLOWEEN SHOW at Ness Islands is not only a landmark event in the calendar, marking the beginning of the Inverness Winter Festival, but also one of the most popular participatory events in the city, having become in the space of just a few years an essential date in most families’ diaries. This year’s event on 28 & 29 OCT looks like being even better than ever thanks to the sterling work of Eden Court Creative and Arts In Motion, who’ll be taking the theme of Underworld and producing a spookily irresistible experience. Dress up and head along to see what’s hiding in the darkness, and for more detail, see pages 3 & 4… One person who’d be able to survive a night on Ness Islands no matter what jumped out of the bushes is RAY MEARS. He’s making a welcome return visit to EDEN COURT on 10 OCT. his latest talk is called Born To Be Wild and he promises to explain why his life has been shaped by environments that haven’t been changed by human activity. DOUG SCOTT is equally attracted to uninhabited places, specifically whopping great mountains, the most fearsome of which is The Ogre, the most difficult of the world’s high mountains to conquer—all approaches to the summit involving highly technical rock climbing at high altitude. In 1977 Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent, only for Scott to fall on the way down and break both legs, while Bonnington broke ribs and caught pneumonia during an ensuing five day storm. It took them over a week to get back to base camp with Doug crawling all of the way and Chris in excruciating pain. Forty years later, at EDEN COURT on 24 OCT Scott will be recounting an adventure that many of us would probably never want to talk about again. Rather less terrifying experiences will be shared by the culinary critic JAY RAYNER at EDEN COURT on 21 OCT, when he’ll be sharing his 10 FOOD COMMANDMENTS. Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, it should be entertainingly dogmatic. More foodie fun at TASTE NORTH taking place up at ACKERGILL TOWER in WICK on 01 OCT. Top Scottish chef NICK NAIRN will lead several masterclasses using locally sourced ingredients and there’ll be loads of food and drinks stands. A good chance to sample some ace food as well as doing some early Christmas shopping. The same goes for the DORNOCH WHISKY FESTIVAL on 27–30 OCT where there’ll be whisky & gin tastings, plus many more related activities. Rather more sedate, but attracting equally devoted aficionados,is the LOCH NESS KNIT FEST from 13–15 OCT wherein there’ll be plenty of “knit one, pearl one” action, clacking of needles and astonishingly impressive creations. Inspired by the hugely successful Danish Fano Strikkefestival, last year’s inaugural event attracted over 1200 visitors from over 20 countries and even more are expected this time round. Another event inspired by a successful continental equivalent is GLUREN BIJ DE BUREN on 29 OCT with the houses of Cromarty opening their doors for all sorts of performances. More about that one next month. More SPECIALS features and events at: whatsonhighlands.com

Staggies Walk, Whisky Run

FILM

SPORT Much of the football attention this month will be focussed on the Scottish national team’s attempts to snatch that vital second place in their group that’ll give them a play-off spot for the World Cup, though seasoned viewers might be sticking to the ageold tenet that “it’s the hope that kills you”. Better perhaps to save the expectations for domestic proceedings and the slightly tentative start to the season made by ROSS COUNTY. An early exit from the League Cup means more time to concentrate on the league and the presumed aim of a top half finish, with home games against HEARTS (14 OCT) and HAMILTON ACCIES (21 OCT) providing opportunities to establish some winning momentum heading into the long, wild winter. Whatever County do on the pitch, their work off it deserves much applause. Not only have they introduced several fan initiatives making it affordable for young fans to attend matches, but they also do lots of good work for and with the community—a case in point being the STAGGIES WALK FOR MAGGIE’S [1] on 21 OCT. It’s a five mile sponsored walk around Dingwall, to raise much needed and essential funds for Maggie’s Highlands, whilst enjoying a great family day out. After the walk has taken place every participant is given a free match day ticket for the aforementioned Accies game. More details at maggiescentres.org Our other local team, ICT, are having a rather harder time of it than they might have expected in the second tier. Rather than vying for immediate promotion, they’re actually nearer the bottom than the top of the table, so will be hoping to get the season back on track with games against QoS on 30 SEP and DUNFERMLINE on 28 OCT. A few more recommended sporting events this month are the INVERNESS ABC BOXING TOURNAMENT [2] at IRONWORKS on 07 OCT, the AVIEMORE HALF MARATHON on 15 OCT and the ‘DRAMATHON’ on 21 OCT. We certainly like the sound of the latter—a marathon distance race along the Speyside Way from Glenfarclas distillery to Glenfiddich distillery. The route passes several distilleries along the route and by getting stamped at various points along the way participants can pick up the corresponding miniatures at the end of the race. There is a choice of a full marathon (Glenfarclas to Glenfiddich), a half-marathon (Tamdhu to Glenfiddich), a 10K (Aberlour to Glenfiddich) or a relay race (team of 4 divides up the marathon).

Sun & The Stars… As is so often the case, it’s EDEN COURT who’ll be supplying all your theatrical needs this month with a typically diverse selection of entertainment on offer, beginning with a familiar TV name coming to town—MARTIN KEMP—who’s starring as record producer Sam Phillips in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET [1] from 16–21 OCT, inspired by the night that rock ‘n’ roll icons ELVIS PRESLEY, JOHNNY CASH, JERRY LEE LEWIS and CARL PERKINS came together for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, the quartet gathered at Phillips’ Sun Studios in Memphis for a session that’s become the stuff of legend and this musical features many of those artists’ greatest moments including Blue Suede Shoes, Great Balls of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Hound Dog and many more. Read our interview with Martin Kemp on page 39 >>>. More TV names appear in a tried and trusted classic in the form of THE STEAMIE [2] (03–07 OCT). First performed in May 1987, this nostalgic yarn about a Glasgow wash house has delighted and entertained audiences all over the world and was acclaimed last time it came here. Writer Tony Roper directs this new 30th anniversary touring production has Mary McCusker and Fiona Wood reprising their roles from the 2012 production as Mrs Culfeathers and Doreen alongside Steven McNicoll, and Libby McArthur & Carmen Pieraccini from River City. Win a pair of tickets to see the show—see page 27 <<<. Frankly, we’d be a bit disappointed if there wasn’t a strong comedy line-up at Eden Court this month, such is the venue’s established reputation for booking sparkling stand-ups, and a couple of semi-established (and always entertaining) comics, ROB ROUSE [3] (26 OCT) and SHAPPI KHORSANDI [4] (30 OCT) are well worth seeing (with Khorsandi also playing Ullapool on 25 OCT and Elgin on 27 OCT) while down the road at MAD HATTERS on 21 OCT, Scottish stand-up SUSIE MCCABE lobs some gags at notions of health and fitness with her Let’s Get Physical show. Back at Eden Court, dance fans will be checking out WITHOUT A HITCH [5] on 17 OCT and LEARNING FROM THE FUTURE [6] on 18 OCT. The former, from Room 2 Manoeuvre, is a bravura mix of dark comedy and hip hop dance featuring an international cast from Finland, Sweden and the UK—while the latter, by Colette Sadler, describes itself as a “post-human dance fiction using movement to amplify the primitive power of the bodies against the background of the dematerialisation and disappearance”. Which is what we always look for in a show. A heads up too for SCOTTISH BALLET coming to the venue on 03 & 04 NOV, about which we’ll have more next month, but get your tickets now. A word too for AT A STRETCH [7] on 28 OCT, a sharp, comedic piece of physical theatre with an LGBT theme and HORIZONTAL COLLABORATION [8] on 31 OCT, a darkly fascinating courtroom drama from the excellent writer-director David Leddy.

Depending on your age, MARTIN KEMP will be most familiar to you as a musician with SPANDAU BALLET, a soap star on Eastenders, an actor in The Krays or a judge on BBC’s Let It Shine. Now he’s treading the boards in the musical MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET at EDEN COURT from 16–21 OCT, playing legendary producer Sam Phillips, overseeing a recording session featuring Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins! We asked him to tell us more… n How much did you know about Sam Phillips before you took the part? Did you do any research on him?

MARTIN KEMP: Million Dollar Quartet Eden Court, Mon 16–Sat 21 2017

I knew the whole story, Elvis Parker and Phillips is part of my pop culture heritage…. and this MDQ story was a moment in time I have drooled over since I was a kid. n Ever visit Sun Studios during the Spandau days?

No but it is on my bucket list!! n What’s it like doing theatre compared to TV or being in a band? All part of this thing called

entertainment, it’s like painting in oil instead of water colours, same thing but different, if you know what I mean. n Though the music’s obviously different from your influences, does the flamboyance of Elvis, Jerry Lee and the rest strike a chord? These are

my influences… Phillips created rock and roll and without that everything would be different.. n You were undeniably bold as a band. Why do you think that outsider spirit seems to have disappeared from 21st century pop? Pop culture

was supposed to let kids rebel a little - wear things and like certain music that their parents didn’t quite get… but today that’s lost in bedrooms with kids sitting on Facebook and social media n What advice would you give your 18 year old self? Advice I give most kids…Try to turn your

hobby into your job, THAT is real success. n Any more films in the pipeline? What did you think of Tom Hardy’s take on the Krays? Haven’t

seen it but look forward to it, Tom’s fab! n Which of the Million Dollar Quartet would you most like to have been? No Question ELVIS… I

loved his style, charisma and voice… he was the ultimate pop star!

EATING OUT

Table Manors Achnagairn Estate, Kirkhill, Inverness 01463 830 970 Never liked puns. Chippies called The Codfather, Hairdressers called Curl Up & Dye, flower sellers billing themselves as Florist Gump. Always seems a bit desperate, a bit forced, particularly when adopted by restaurants whose initial point of enticement shouldn’t be a moniker that makes you groan.

to preparing fresh produce sourced locally (sometimes just 200yds away at Achnagairn Farm) and they quickly established a reputation for seriously good cooking. So, setting aside linguistic prejudice, we decide to investigate further… We take the wrong turning entering the estate and end up tootling along dirt tracks for some time, half expecting we’ll be set upon by crazed hillbillies, but eventually find our way to the restaurant, a handsome building set next to a cul-de-sac of lodges that looks curiously like one of those spotlessly clean suburban streets you see in American movies. The only sign of life is an adorable cat who makes its way past the odd statues of giraffe and birds (yes really) to check us out.

Which initially doesn’t bode well for Table Manors, the crowbarred “manor” of the pun referring to the fact that it’s situated in the grounds of Achnagairn Estate, near Beauly. The Big House at the heart of the estate is famous for its five star accommodation and hospitality, was recently voted by Harper’s Bazaar as the Top Wedding Venue in the UK but until fairly recently the one thing that was missing was somewhere to eat, particularly a restaurant that would match the high Inside, we’re warmly welcomed and standards of the rest of Achnagairn. taken to a large window table in a Table Manors aimed to set that right, room boldly decorated with white head chef Euan Walker and sous- walls, birch logs and giant images of chef David Macdonald, both multiple knife, fork and plates. It’s a bit odd award winners, were brought in, (with the theme even carried through applying their considerable talents to the toilets), but certainly unique.

There are two menus, a tasting one and a bistro one, and it’s the latter we go for. My regular companion and I are joined once again by the enigmatic Ms X—and over the next couple of hours we’re treated to perhaps the best food we’ve ever eaten up here. A hint of the high standards about to be unveiled comes with freshly baked rolls brought to our table, a couple of white ones and others that we’re told include black pudding. They’re both splendid and the blood sausage element in the latter is barely noticeable except to make for good eating. Our starters, from a confidently short menu (four options per course and daily special called Chef’s Whim) are sublime. Mine is Ham Hough Terrine, beautifully seasoned meat accompanied by croquettes of smoked cheese, apple and a kind of deconstructed piccalilli, the whole thing perfectly balanced in flavour. My regular companion, Mr Y, has Tomato Presse, which is an object lesson in elevating the simplest of ingredients to new

heights, a selection of tomatoes of varied hues in a salad with goat’s cheese and basil. As with everything else we eat, presentation is quite exquisite with, importantly, taste to match. For Ms X it’s yet another example of the chef’s creativity, a Sweet Corn Panna Cotta with White Crab, Avocado and Hazelnut. It’s a triumph of flavours and textures, an artful dusting of fennel powder providing a final flourish. There’s a wonderful lightness to the dish as well as a realisation that ingredients you think might not go together most definitely do when prepared so skilfully.

Mr Y has Lemon Tart and it’s all we can do to stop him running around the table punching the sky. As we’ve pointed out before, a talented pastry chef is a rarity in many kitchens, but there’s real skill here, the tart having just the right level of lemoniness and a flavour that you’ll have noticed crops up regularly throughout the meal, fennel, introduced via an inventive fennel and yoghurt sorbet. Ms X started her meal with a savoury panna cotta and book ends it with a more conventionally sweet version. But the simple description Vanilla Panna Cotta doesn’t do justice to all the work that goes into what’s presented. There’s an accompanying fresh mint ice cream and strawberries in various forms, most successfully a little disc of strawberry jelly packed with an entire punnet of intense flavour.

The mains are equally assured— my Loin Of Lamb, melt-in-the-mouth tender, comes with all manner of folderols including braised lamb shoulder, Little Gem lettuce and unidentifiable, but tasty, purees. Desserts are an elegantly presented conclusion to proceedings. I go for that scourge of Masterchef contestants throughout the ages, Chocolate Fondant, and this one shows exactly how it should be done, an indulgently chocolatey creation with a perfectly oozing centre, accompanied by Black Isle Beer Ice Cream, which thankfully doesn’t actually taste of beer, but provides an interesting hoppy undertone.
