ART P08

We’re having a moan at UnCreative Scotland’s p*ss-poor decision to cut funding to Eden Court by 28%. This even after the Scottish Government stepped in to provide an extra ~£7m of funding. Makes it difficult to achieve their stated aim of everyone accessing and enjoying artistic and creative experiences. Maybe they don’t mean the Highlands? Are we just too far away to count? So much of the arts world exists because people give their time and effort for nothing—yet as soon as the public purse is involved, we need loads of administrators sucking up high salaries and expensive properties to operate out of. In the words of Ben Folds Five, Give me my money back, you bitch.

ART Look Around You… There’s invariably something interesting to see at the CASTLE GALLERY and this month is no exception, with a show by JONATHAN SHEARER running from 02–24 MAR. Shearer graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 1993 and followed this with postgraduate study at Cyprus College of Art. He now lives in the Highlands where he is inspired by the rivers, mountains and coastal scenery in all weathers. Never more so than in this exhibition entitled A BOTHY TOO FAR (see preparatory sketch for show [1]), portraying remote bothies in the North West Highlands. He works en plein air, painting swiftly with thick oil paint using trowels and brushes to capture the fleeting moment and rapidly changing light conditions, giving his pictures not only a sense of artistic integrity, but also capturing something of the spirit of the Highlands in a way that photos rarely can. LESLEY BANKS documents exploration of a rather less wild kind in GONGOOZLER at EDEN COURT, showing throughout March. A visual journey along Scotland’s canals from the perspective of the pedestrian on the towpath, the paintings provide an interesting look at the way we’ve altered the landscape over the years. Another interaction with the locality comes in MYND at EDEN COURT from 04 MAR–01 APR. Using toy and vintage cameras, expired and rare films, and alternative processes, Black Isle filmmaker, TRISTAN AITCHISON reinterprets the Highland landscape, presenting a personal and introspective photographic series about his relationship with his Highland home.

JONATHAN SHEARER, 02-24 Mar, Jonathan Shearer graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 1993 and followed this with post graduate study at Cyprus College of Art. He now lives in the Highlands of Scotland where he is inspired by the rivers, mountains and coastal scenery in all weathers. Jonathan is an exceptional artist. He seeks to convey his physical engagement with the landscape; preferring to work en plein air, painting swiftly with thick oil paint using trowels and brushes to capture the fleeting moment and rapidly changing light conditions. castlegallery.co.uk

EDEN COURT GALLERY UNSPOKEN TRUTHS BY JANE MCDONOUGH, Feb

WEATHERED BY LIZ GREEN, Feb FÒCAS INDIA: DOCUMENT to 4 Mar, Fòcas India launched in 2017 to celebrate emerging photography from Scotland and India as part of the UK India Year of Culture 2017. Featured will be work across genres including documentary, portraiture and landscape. Document reveals the stories that define us as individuals and the ties that bind us as nations.

TRISTAN AITCHISON: MYND, 4 Mar - 1 Apr, Using toy and vintage cameras, expired and rare films, and alternative processes, Black Isle filmmaker, Tristan Aitchison reinterprets the Highland landscape and presents ‘Mynd’. It is a personal and introspective photographic series about his relationship with his Highland home.

BLAZEJ MARCZAK’S: THE GREY CITY, 1 Apr - 29 May, A personal and subjective

impression of Aberdeen. Often described as the Granite City, though others say it is silver. Blazej feels a most accurate label is the ‘Grey City’. A ubiquitous landscape has been created by the silver granite and a matching sky: this evokes an atmosphere of gloom. Blazej fails to see the glamour as described by others; he is instead attracted to the things that are seemingly commonplace, things which many may see as unimportant and mundane. The silver remains but is becoming stained, a patina encroaching.

GONGOOZLER, Mar, by Lesley Banks. A visual journey along Scotland’s canals from the perspective of the pedestrian on the towpath.

HIGHLANDER MUS’

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXHIBITION: SUMMER HAS BEEN TURNED TO WINTER BY THE GUNS, to 18 Mar, Artist in Residence Robyn Woolston worked with the museum’s First World War archive to bring to life some of the interesting stories and characters which exist in the original letters, diaries and photographs kept by Highland soldiers during the conflict.

and things, culminating in an architectural proposal. The film takes Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) as a starting point. It is a substance that makes up chalk, used as a bone supplement and in its crystalline form doubly refracts images seen through it. Calcium Storeys will also feature IMAG’s Bernera Goddess – a whale bone with crudely carved eyes and mouth which was reputedly found in a burial mound on the Outer Hebrides.

THE LAUNDRY GALLERY

TINA MACLEOD, Mar & Apr, Scottish designer/maker Tina MacLeod creates tactile pieces of jewellery that evoke a sense of place. The concept of the island and the unique atmosphere of the Hebridean coastal woodland are central to her work, capturing an essence of that sensed but unexplained aura often experienced within the forest. By using precious metal techniques that produce delicate but deliberate layers of surface texture, she is able to convey a sense of the ephemeral nature of the living landscape.

IMAG

A FINE LINE, 03 Mar - 12 May, This exhibition features work by four contemporary artists based in Scotland – Lizzie Farey, Angie Lewin, Frances Priest and Bronwen Sleigh. The exhibition explores the fine line between art and craft in two and three dimensions, bringing together a diverse range of disciplines including printmaking, drawing, collage, sculpture and ceramics. Working with different media but united by detailed observation and strong draughtsmanship, these artists experiment with linear mark-making and drawing in its widest sense.

BITS, PIECES AND FISH-SLICES, 05 - 30 Mar, The March 2018 Exhibition at UPSTAIRS welcomes the first, in a series of three exhibitions, by New Art Group Black Isle Abstract. ‘Bits, Pieces and Fish-slices’ the first exhibition will feature work by Highlands based Artist Alex Dunn. Originally from Glasgow, and a graduate of Aberdeen University, Alex has been painting since University days. “‘In the 70’s and 80’s my work was conflicted as I battled with the two alternatives of abstraction and figuration,” says Alex. “It was not until the turn of the century that I finally moved away completely from relying on figures and realism and embraced an approach without any reference to the objective world. I have a fascination with repetition and with the characteristics of graphite as a medium, particularly the way in which large areas can appear quite different depending on the light source and the angle of viewing. My intention is to produce pictures that are contemplative and timeless, that transcend any reference to the physical world and ‘every-day’ experience.” Open: 2pm-4pm weekdays. upstairs.scot

It’s A Shook Up World… We live in unsettlingly weird times—the best of it is that some dubious received wisdoms are being overturned (including the notions of what makes a good / box-office / awardsfriendly film—see this year’s awards noms); the worst is established facts being spuriously challenged—flat earthers, religious whackjobs and racists given airtime.

BIG NEW RELEASES And so it is that perhaps the unobvious will topple the boxoffice-obvious this month: When Mr Spielberg releases a film, it’s usually an event and READY PLAYER ONE [1] (30 Mar Vue) probably is too. Just not quite sure what sort of an event it will be—strong on (80s nostalgia) style, tbc on substance. Old traditions have it that people like a spy-thriller, so put a star in one and they’ll love it. In RED SPARROW [2] (01 Mar Vue, 30 Mar EC), Jennifer Lawrence will put that to the test. Much less-trodden ground is on offer from (the wonderful) Steven Sodeberg’s psych-horriller UNSANE [3] (23 Mar Vue), filmed on an iPhone in 4K with CLARE ‘The Crown’ FOY and Blair Witch’s JOSHUA LEONARD, and a different take on the damaged fighter in JOURNEYMAN [4] (30 Mar Vue), starring, written and directed by the talented PADDY CONSIDINE, with Dr Who herself, JODIE WHITTAKER. His debut Tyrannasour is a classic, so hopes are high here… EDEN COURT ‘LMRTM’ That’s ‘Last Months Releases This Month’, fyi. If you didn’t catch the ace LADY BIRD yet, it continues until 09 Mar. BLACK PANTHER (from 30 Mar) is refreshingly ripping up ticket sales and rave reviews as we write, THE SHAPE OF WATER (09–15 Mar) has entranced smaller but devoted numbers whilst I, TONYA [5] (16–22 Mar) has yet to hit screens but has garnered multiple award noms for both MARGOT ROBBIE and ALLISON JANNEY. The normally dependable COLIN FIRTH and RACHEL WEISZ star in self-inflicted adversity tale, THE MERCY (02–08 Mar) and the kids might appreciate the strongly-styled, ‘okay’ but surprisingly-lacklustre-for-Pixar, COCO (03–11 Mar). OTHER NEW RELEASES Tired ideas, tired animation (non)style, tired director, tired ideology, tired interpretation and tired, outdated franchise are all accusations that can be variously levelled at these ‘big’ releases that come from those previously received wisdoms: Horrible/y animated characters in MONSTER FAMILY [6] (02 Mar Vue); the now-toxic brand, Woody Allen’s WONDER WHEEL (09 Mar Vue), “The Story Will Be Told”/“what, why?!”– religious flick MARY MAGDALENE (16 Mar Vue) with ROONEY MARA, JOAQUIN PHOENIX and CHIWETEL EJIOFOR, JAMES CORDEN as the ‘animated’ PETER RABBIT [7] (16 Mar Vue), Alicia Vikanda in TOMB RAIDER [8] (16 Mar Vue), Freederm ad gone wild, DUCK DUCK GOOSE (30 Mar Vue), and, you know, FIFTY SHADES FREED (30 Mar EC). Now with guns. FILMS OUT, BUT MAYBE NOT HERE YET... If our contention about changing times is correct, then as above, hopefully our hot picks will out-perform the cold ones, whilst the warm will entertain, not break ground: HOT: ISLE OF DOGS [9] (30 Mar Vue) is a new stop-animation from the always-magical film-maker, WES ANDERSON; whilst WALK LIKE A PANTHER [10] (09 Mar Vue) has real Full Monty potential, only about 80s UK wrestling. Spot the unlikely stars. WARM: GRINGO (09 Mar Vue) is a slick action comedy, starring David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Sharlto Copley and Joel Edgerton, whose brother, Nash, directs; MOM AND DAD (02 Mar Vue) features NICOLAS CAGE and SELMA BLAIR in a black, black horrorcom; Ever think you’d see OPRAH WINFREY in a sci-fi? You will in A WRINKLE IN TIME (23 Mar Vue). ERM, PRETTY COLD: GAME NIGHT (02 Mar), SAMSON (same), PROUD MARY (23 Mar), BLOCKERS and MIDNIGHT SUN (both 30 Mar), are unimaginative efforts covering ‘illness-for-emotion’ teen romdram, murder-mystery-com, biblical drama, killer-turns-soft-drama and, um, cock-blocking. Yup... OTHER EC HIGHLIGHTS

Take your pick from timely humane Chilean drama A

FANTASTIC WOMAN [11] UNA MUJER FANTÁSTICA (16 Mar EC) about a trans woman’s fight for acceptance, classy third-age-romcom with IMELDA STAUNTON, TIMOTHY SPALL, CELIA IMRIE and JOANNA LUMLEY, FINDING YOUR FEET (23 Mar EC), new thriller from brilliant Scottish writer-director, Lynne Ramsey (Morvern Callar, We Need To Talk About Kevin), YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE 12] (23 Mar EC), with JOAQUIN PHOENIX (not to be missed) or three varied docs worth a look: MY GENERATION (14 Mar EC) is MICHAEL CAINE-narrated and is about the ‘Swinging Sixties’ (plus live post-screen Q&A from the BFI Caine and director, David Batty); MOUNTAIN (16 Mar EC) is a dazzling project, voiced by WILLEM DEFOE and scored by Australian Chamber Orchestra; and WALK WITH ME (25/26 Mar EC)—voiced by BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH—follows a 91-year-old Vietnamese zen Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. And why not?

EDEN COURT SEASONS & SPECIALS Indie Pics is new monthly strand, 3 films aiming to increase awareness of great independent cinema. This month, BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY [13] (08 Mar EC) a documentary on the unbelieveable life of an actress who inspired the looks of Snow White and Cat Woman and invented Wi-Fi (sort of); and Swedish pair, THE SQUARE (23 Mar EC) a Palme d’Or-winning satire on modern culture, and THE NILE HILTON INCIDENT (30 Mar EC), a thiller set in the 2011 Egyptian uprising. There’s also three intruiging collections: a Japanese Season, an Iranian Season and the Right Now Film Fest—see centre pages for details…

KIDS Eh, Oh! Plenty of entertainment for the kids this month, climaxing not just with Easter Sunday falling on April Fools Day (offering plenty of opportunities for wrapping stones in foil and passing them off as chocolate eggs), but also with the eagerly awaited visit of TELETUBBIES LIVE [1] at EDEN COURT on 30 & 31 MAR. Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po are appearing in their first ever live show, with Tubby Phone, Noo-noo and Sun Baby all bound to put in an appearance as the world of the TV show is recreated on stage… On 18 MAR, A TIGER’S TALE [2] brings an astonishing mix of circus, puppetry, live music and songs as award-winning playwright Mike Kenny’s production tells the gobsmacking true tale of Fenella, “the Holmfirth Tiger”. A ramshackle travelling troupe really did adopt a tiger cub and bring her from South Africa to West Yorkshire—and this show celebrates their riotous adventures along the way. More puppetry and music combined, along with dance, in LITTLE LIGHT [3], performed in EC’s Jim Love Studio on 31 MAR at 1.30pm. A collaboration with Jordan’s Haya Cultural Centre, a historic community space in that country, this magical show set in a Bedouin tent, tells the tale of a star that falls from the sky and begins to explore the world, encountering a lonely boy and his dog… Slightly more fearsome encounters in SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT DINOSAURS [4] at EC on 31 MAR. This matinee show is presented by evolutionary biologist DR BEN GARROD, using film footage from BBC’s Planet Dinosaur to tell you all about the deadliest predators that ever roamed the planet. Yes, even more deadly than humans. Should be pretty thrilling. Finally, a welcome return to the Highlands for everyone’s favourite kids entertainers, FUNBOX, who are doing their thing at DINGWALL TOWN HALL on 25 MAR.

Spoilt For Choice. No excuse for not liking the cut of someone’s jib this month as a wide array of musical talent comes to town with, for once, some no nonsense pop well represented. And country too, particularly ASHTON LANE [1] playing EDEN COURT on 22 MAR. The husband and wife duo of Esther & Tim O’Connor are showing just how strong the genre is on these shores and picking up awards all over the place while their Nashville Heart album already has a ten gallon hat full of five star reviews. MICHAEL ENGLISH [2], despite his surname, is the pride of Irish country music and he’s been winning countless awards too. His last visit to Eden Court was a roaring success, so his return on 10 MAR should be just as good. And get you in the mood for the PRIDE OF IRELAND ST PATRICK’S NIGHT [3] show at EC on 15 MAR with a stunning bill including DOMINIC KIRWAN, PHILOMENA BEGLEY and BRENDAN SHINE. We’ve often mused about when a band shed enough members to simply become a tribute to themselves and that’s almost the case with THE SOUTH [4] who play IRONWORKS on 31 MAR. This incarnation of what used to be The Beautiful South features former members Alison Wheeler and sax player Gaz Birtles, but they still have enough great songs in their locker to make for an enjoyable night out. There’s a fair few gigs at IRONWORKS this month with veteran combos like SMOKIE (16 MAR) and SKID ROW [5] (06 MAR) vying for your attention, while proof that some old punks can still deliver far more impressive live shows than many young whippersnappers comes from THE STRANGLERS [6] (09 MAR) and the never less than magnificent STIFF LITTLE FINGERS (18 MAR). If you’re already excited about Little Mix coming to town at the beginning of July you can fuel your excitement by taking in tribute act LITTLE MIX MAGIC [7] at IRONWORKS on 01 APR, joined under the banner Princesses Of Pop by SIMPLY ARIANA paying homage to the sainted Ms Grande. Some good clubbing attractions include DJ RANKIN (IW, 03 MAR), MARCO BAILEY (IW, 10 MAR) and HIGHLAND JUNGLISTS/MRS MAGOO (TOOTH & CLAW, 03 MAR), while folk fans will be checking out the NORDIC FIDDLERS BLOC [8] at EDEN COURT on 04 MAR and BRANDON MCPHEE at the same venue on 17 MAR. Finally, for something classical you can’t go wrong with the SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA at EDEN COURT on 03 MAR or SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE there on 13 MAR, while ST JOHN’S CHURCH INVERNESS should be the ideal venue for RACHMANINOV VESPERS BY CANDLELIGHT on 17 MAR.

SPECIALS Look Who’s Back… 2

A notable visitor to EDEN COURT on SAT 03 MAR as ALEX SALMOND [1] brings his UNLEASHED! show to town. The evening will feature Alex’s thoughts and stories, conversations with some especially chosen friends, music and comedy as well as your own chance to question him on just about anything you like. It’s also likely that Mr Salmond’s version of the much loved Rikki Fulton character, the Rev. Jolly will put in an appearance. ANDY KIRKPATRICK [2] is perhaps an even more accomplished raconteur than Alex Salmond, as well as a heck of a mountaineer, having soloed the most difficult routes in the world. In his brand new show, PSYCHOVERTICAL: A HIGHER EDUCATION, which will coincide with the release of the film Psychovertical by award-winning director Jen Randall, Kirkpatrick looks back at forty years of climbing and adventures, from the Alps to Patagonia, Yosemite to Greenland. For something a little more sedate, check out the DORNOCH GRAND FIBRE FEST from 09–11 MAR which is, as the name suggests, a festival of fibre and woollen crafts, with masterclasses in weaving and botanical printing. In a similar vein, there’s a BEGINNERS SEWING WEEKEND at CROMARTY OLD BREWERY on 03 & 04 MAR, designed to give you the confidence to start your own sewing projects at home. You will learn the basic of sewing including how to operate and navigate your way around a sewing machine, read and understand a basic sewing pattern, pinning and cutting out of fabric, using basic sewing tools and construction of projects. The Old Brewery has plenty of lessons and workshops worth checking out, with a UKULELE WEEKEND on 17 & 18 MAR looking particularly appealing. Hosted by FINLAY ALLISON, presenter of the Ukulele School at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, you’ll learn everything from fingerpicking to song arranging with plenty of opportunities to participate in performances. More details at cromartyartstrust.org.uk A word too for the BRAMBLES FASHION SHOW & FOOD TASTING at NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE on FRI 09 MAR. Tickets are £10 each including a glass of Prosecco.

Stretch Your Legs. The first major running event of the year takes place this month in the form of the INVERNESS HALF MARATHON & 5K [1] on 11 MAR. The route starts alongside the banks of the Ness in Bught Park and takes in many of the city’s icons. A warm welcome awaits all runners as they approach the finish line on entering Queen’s Park Stadium—achieved by over 2600 runners in 2017. If you’re looking for a shorter distance or are new to running, the INVERNESS 5K could be the race for you. Whatever your running ability, fitness, age or experience, you should give it a go. Or, if you really have decided to wait another year to participate, head along to cheer along the competitors. Some of those competitors may well have tuned up for the Inverness Half Marathon by taking part in the NAIRN 10K a week earlier on 04 MAR. Another popular run in equally scenic surroundings, it heralds the unofficial start of the running season. If you’ve been inspired by the glorious snow-related activities on show at the Winter Olympics, you might want to investigate the SKI-AN-DURO event at NEVIS RANGE on 17 MAR. It’s a combination, mixing up snow and ski cross with mountain bike enduro, climaxing in a mass start race from as high on the mountain as conditions will allow. Participants will race to the designated transition area before changing to mountain bike and descending the mountain using parts of the world famous mountain bike downhill course and other classic enduro routes that the mountain has to offer. Football wise the season is hurtling to a climax. ICT are still chasing an outside chance of making the playoffs (and by the time you read this might be in the final of the Irn Bru Cup), with home games against BRECHIN (03 MAR), FALKIRK (24 MAR) and ST MIRREN (31 MAR) all requiring maximum points, while ROSS COUNTY will be hoping that the presence of ex-Liverpool player David N’Gog is helping them climb off the bottom of the table. They’re at home to HAMILTON on 17 MAR.

Laughter In The Dark. You need some laughs to get you through the seemingly endless winter and fortunately EDEN COURT is regularly there to provide them. Hot on the heels of last month’s appearances by Jimeoin and Rich Hall (and having unveiled bookings later in the year for Jason Manford, Joe Lycett, Fred Macaulay and more), March brings us a trio of accomplished stand-ups, beginning with LARRY DEAN [1] on 05 MAR. Dean was up here last year showing why he’s one of the brightest new comedy talents, mixing confessional routines about coming out to his dad with smart observations and an engaging persona. Now he’s back with a show called FANDAN, having sold out Edinburgh Fringe and chalked up that essential landmark on any comedic journey, an appearance on Live At The Apollo. This looks like being a massive year for him (as he tells us in our interview with him elsewhere in this issue and on our website), so it’s a great time to catch him. ED BYRNE [2], who’s coming to EDEN COURT on 12 MAR, is further down the comedy path with regular TV appearances on everything from panel shows to a travelogue with his pal Dara O’ Brien supplementing huge countrywide tours, the latest of which, SPOILER ALERT finds him complaining about his kids and how raising children wasn’t the same back in his day. Despite the mainstream subject matter he still manages to inject some welcome curmudgeonly elements, proving he’s still a master of storytelling. CRAIG HILL [3] is also something of a comedy veteran and comes up here so often he’s virtually got Highland citizenship. His army of adoring fans (he’s pretty much part of the family after his years of hosting the Inverness Hogmanay event) will no doubt be hanging out the bunting for his show at EDEN COURT on 30 MAR. It’s a busy month for the venue, another highlight being A SPOONFUL OF SHERMAN [4] on 08 & 09 MAR. It’s a musical stage show for all the family, celebrating the life and music of multi award-winning Disney songwriters The Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh), Tin Pan Alley songwriter Al Sherman (writer for artists including Frank Sinatra, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald), and present day composer, Robert J. Sherman. Created to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/5 British miners’ strike, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke brings a riveting dance theatre show, COAL [5] to EC on 09 & 10 MAR. While a nostalgic look at the hard-hitting realities of life at the coal face might not seem the most obvious subject matter for a dance piece, this one has been picking up rave reviews all over the place. Quite literally a diamond in the coal dust. Finally, THE DWELLING PLACE [6] on 28 & 29 MAR at EC transports the audience into an abandoned cottage on the Outer Hebrides, striking live visuals, electronic sound and the words of the great Highland poets featuring in an immersive, limited capacity performance installation. If you enjoyed Eden Court’s previous site-specific piece set in a caravan, this might be just the ticket.

FANDAN: Larry Dean FANDAN

Eden Court, Mon 05 March 2018 Ahead of comedian LARRY DEAN’s return to Eden Court on 05 March, we caught up with Scotland’s brightest new comedy star: ■ What made you first want to be a stand-up? I loved watching Billy Connolly as a kid but I think it may have actually been my Dad telling me I wasn’t funny. I think that was the beginning of my career. ■ What’s the best thing about being a comic? Getting to prove my Dad wrong every single night. Also the chance to meet new people and have a laugh with them. ■ And the worst? People not realising comedy is subjective and then telling you about all the comedians they don’t like, which a lot of the time are your friends. ■ You’re the least camp gay comedian in the world. Is there a grain of truth in your gag about being a homophobic homosexual in terms of not wanting to conform to stereotypes? Nah, I’m not bothered about stereotypes to be honest. I don’t, but that doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. I never really thought of talking about being gay on stage until another comic told me I should, and then when I did people seemed to find it interesting how un-stereotypical I am.

■ Which makes you happier, people you like doing well or people you hate failing? Haha! What a question. I love karma, so both are great. Usually when a comedian is doing badly on stage and the audience isn’t laughing, the only ones laughing are the other comedians. ■ If you weren’t a comedian, what job would you be good at? I used to want to be a carpenter when I was growing up. So I’d say... Son of god? ■ How has life changed for you career wise since your last show up here? I’ve been really, really busy. I started my new show ‘Fandan’ at the Edinburgh Fringe, last August, then I recorded Live At The Apollo and Comedy Central’s Roast Battle in September. So it’s been pretty hectic… ■ What did you make of the Highland audience? SO friendly! Really a great laugh. In fact I got an email a few days ago from some guy who was at my gig in Inverness last year, and the fact that I’ve done more than 200 gigs since then but still remember who they guy was shows how nice the audience were. I won’t repeat exactly what he said but I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I don’t send those kind of pictures online. ■ Now that you’re an established, rather than aspiring, stand-up, how does that affect your creativity? Do gags come easier? Ha! I don’t think I’ll ever let myself think I’m established. Low self-esteem and self doubt keep my pride and ego in check. My creativity hasn’t been affected I don’t think. I still frantically look through notes from months ago, before I go on, and scribble down anything that I think could be funny. Usually it’s my penis. I can’t really draw though so I have a lot of notebooks filled with the phrase ‘my penis’ over and over. ■ What are your plans for the rest of the year? Doing Edinburgh? After my UK and Ireland tour in March I go to Australia to do some festivals out there, then I’m back doing the last few dates of Fandan in the UK. Then it’s time to get my Edinburgh show sorted again. My notes usually have tear stains on them by the time August comes around. I’ve spent many hours crying over my penis. Usually because of jokes like that.

Revolution 11–19 Church Street, Inverness 01463 217 033 The mark of a skilful franchise is the ease with which it can insert itself swiftly and seamlessly into a new area. Which makes Revolution something of an object lesson for every aspiring chain. With 58 branches throughout the UK, this enterprise, which combines food, drink and a smart design ethos for its outlets, is obviously used to getting up and running without any fuss, but the speed and assurance with which it’s done so in Inverness is little short of breathtaking. The fourth Revolution bar in Scotland opened just before Xmas on the site of the McEwans of Perth building in Church Street, a grand old edifice that, full disclosure, also used to house ICA and IG:LU. The main problem with using an online agency is that once you have paid your upfront registration fee to be listed on their website there is no incentive at all for the online agency to actually sell your property. There is certainly no incentive for them to push for the best price (as they aren’t receiving a commission based on the sale price). And if your property has not sold within a set period (often 10 months) you are then faced with paying the registration fee again in order to continue being listed on their website. You will probably find that using an established estate agency ends up costing less and delivers a better, less stressful experience and results in a higher sale price.
