Who do you love? What us, really? Aw, we don’t deserve that. Although, we did give you the chance to score a free haggis last month—and we are giving you the chance to win a pair of cinema tickets with VIP seats and snacks’n’drinks thrown in this month. But don’t be entering just because you think it’ll make for a cheap Valentine’s date! Obviously, we reject all that commercialised consumerist claptrap—and whether you’re in a romantic place or not, there’s plenty to be doing as usual this issue. So do. And enjoy. Yay.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Inside issue 186 – ART (P07) Last year saw the inaugural photographic festival, Flow, and it returns with a full programme of events through the year at Eden Court... | FILM (P10) What’s that coming over the hill? A clutch of Oscar contenders— including Phantom Thread, The Shape Of Water, Lady Bird and I, Tonya—but there’s heaps of other interesting releases too, such as Marvel’s much anticipated Black Panther… | KIDS (P15) Ooh, interesting— Wolves (5+/all ages) is ostensibly a dance production, exploring fairy tale dangers and morals, and there’s more of that theme for a slightly younger (4+) audience in Little Red Riding Hood. | MUSIC (P16) Is Inverness truly the home of the tribute show? Looking at this month’s lineup, you could make a strong case—we’re in double figures of major look/soundalikees, from Metallica and Coldplay to Andy Williams—tributed by the actual Jimmy Osmond (so who tributes Jimmy?)! Original acts on show include Caithness’ finest, Neon Waltz, also McGoldrick, McCusker & Doyle, the BBC SSO and SCO—and don’t miss Groove Cairngorm and Super Hans! | SPECIALS (P28) Talks aplenty, from Snow Leopards to Women Mountaineers or—if you’ve been inspired by The Last Jedi perhaps—Galactic Archaeology. | SPORT (P32) February hereabouts means a throaty growl in the city centre heralding the start of the Snowman Rally. Clarkson et al eat your hearts out. Footy-wise, look forward to visits from Celtic-topplers Hearts to, erm, Brechin City, and there are some runs to read about also... | THEATRE (P34) We previewed it last issue and now it’s here—Hairspray hits Eden Court—as do Strictly’s Brendan Cole, plus Circus of Horrors, Vampires Rock, Jimeoin and Rich Hall. | BACK END (P38) Who’s the Butch-er’s pal in Nairn?... ART Flow Fest. Again. Last year saw the very welcome opening of a permanent exhibition space for photography in the Highlands, with EDEN COURT’s One Touch Theatre corridor dedicated as the new FLOW Photofest Wall. As the heart of the inaugural Flow photography festival it proved to be popular with large numbers attending events across Inverness and the North. Eden Court hosted ten exhibitions during the festival with work from both established and new artists from Scotland, Norway, Finland and Iceland. And the Flow Photofest continues this month with FÒCAS INDIA: DOCUMENT [1], running from 04 FEB–04 MAR. Fòcas India was launched in 2017 to celebrate emerging photography from Scotland and India as part of the UK India Year of Culture 2017. Featured will be work across genres including documentary, portraiture and landscape. Document reveals the stories that define us as individuals and the ties that bind us as nations. Paul Campbell, one of the festival directors said, “It’s great to be working with Eden Court on an ongoing basis and to be able to curate ongoing photography exhibitions.” He added, “we hope to showcase both local talent and work from photographers living and working in Scotland. We already have twelve artists lined up with a variety of subject matters”.

CASTLE GALLERY ART

JONATHAN SHEARER, 02-24 Mar, Jonathan Shearer graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 1993 and followed this with post graduate study at Cyprus College of Art. He now lives in the Highlands of Scotland where he is inspired by the rivers, mountains and coastal scenery in all weathers. Jonathan is an exceptional artist. He seeks to convey his physical engagement with the landscape; preferring to work en plein air, painting swiftly with thick oil paint using trowels and brushes to capture the fleeting moment and rapidly changing light conditions. castlegallery.co.uk

Films To Date To… Okay, so what we have here is yer film round-up—there’s A —major new releases expected to be big box office and perhaps awards-inducing; then there’s B —other recent big releases making their way to Eden Court; C is other films slated for national release that aren’t currently scheduled to come to Inverness (but that may change) ; and there’s D —a great film season at Eden Court.

A First up, those major titles. Moms, Nuns and Teenagers loom large in LADY BIRD [1] (16 FEB Vue, 23 FEB EC), which has already won awards and is likely to pick up more at either this month’s Bafta’s and next month’s Oscars, or both. Penned and directed by GRETA GERWIG (perhaps not ALL the Oscar Best Director noms will be male), its leads SAOIRSE RONAN and the excellent LAURIE METCALF are both receiving plaudits—and it also features TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET, who’s to date already picked up over 20 awards for his turn in Call Me By Your Name this year. So, recommended highly. Monster-loving director GUILLERMO DEL TORO has made a monster love story, THE SHAPE OF WATER [3] (14 FEB Vue), featuring a terrific cast including SALLY HAWKINS, MICHAEL SHANNON, RICHARD JENKINS, OCTAVIA SPENCER and ‘isn’t he in everything?!’ MICHAEL STUHLBARG. Also recommended. DANIEL DAY LEWIS makes his (allegedly) final film appearance re-teaming with There Will Be Blood director PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON in PHANTOM THREAD [2] (02 FEB EC), as a renowned 50s dressmaker who works with his sister (LESLEY MANVILLE) and finally finds a muse (VICKY KRIEPS) who has particular methods of commanding his attention. With music from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. Also also recommended. Marvel’s Afrofuturist incarnation of BLACK PANTHER [5] arrives (13 FEB Vue) with something of an all-star cast—MICHAEL B. JORDAN, LUPITA NYONG’O, Get Out’s DANIEL KALUUYA, ANGELA BASSETT and FOREST WHITAKER all supporting Mr Panther himself, CHADWICK BOSEMAN. Looks visually stunning. Also aiming for stunning visuals is sci-fi/action/ fantasy/horror, ANNIHILATION [4] (23 FEB Vue)—from Ex Machina director, ALEX GARLAND, starring NATALIE PORTMAN, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH and OSCAR ISAAC. Some of you may find horror just in the mere prospect as the third of the pseudo-s&m flicks, FIFTY SHADES FREED [12] (09 FEB Vue), erm, comes again. B Eden Court as usual, catches up with some of last month’s newies. THE POST [6] (09–15 FEB) arrives (see what I did there), so you can witness the rarified Oscar-y pairing of heavyweights TOM HANKS and MERYL STREEP in this highly resonant true tale of political pressuring of the press in 1970s USA. Equally awardsaimed (in their own eyes at least), HUGH JACKMAN stars as PT Barnum in rose-tinted circus biopic THE GREATEST SHOWMAN [13] (02–08 FEB), whilst if you missed WONDER (02–05 & 08 FEB) back in December, JULIA ROBERTS, JACOB TREMBLAY and OWEN WILSON will see you now. More saccharin fun can be found in the well-regarded PADDINGTON 2 (17–21 FEB) with HUGH GRANT adding to the fun of the original, PADDINGTON—which you can also catch on 17 & 19 FEB. More real history can also be seen—in the settings at least—of WWI stageplay come to screen, JOURNEY’S END [7] (16–22 FEB) with ace ASA BUTTERFIELD alongside SAM CLAFLIN and PAUL BETTANY; and from 2015, CAREY MULLIGAN, HELENA BONHAM-CARTER and STREEP again, star in the classy SUFFRAGETTE [8] (06 FEB). C In this world of maybes and maybe nots, there are also some notable titles that will be released this month—but might not surface round these parts for a while. So in the interests of forewarning you in case they do (but not over-exciting you to the

11

prospect in case they don’t) you could keep ‘em peeled for: I, TONYA (20 FEB) in which MARGOT ROBBIE stars in the amazing (and rather sad) true-life tale of ice-dancer Tonya Harding; ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ (02 FEB) played by the always-watchable DENZEL WASHINGTON who’s already picked up some notable award noms for this; HELEN MIRREN gets all spooky on JASON CLARKE’s ass in WINCHESTER [10] (02 FEB); and CLINT EASTWOOD brings real life to, erm, life in THE 15:17 TO PARIS (09 FEB). THE MERCY (09 FEB) has more real-life action—yachtsmen COLIN FIRTH makes a disastrous round-the-world attempt despite having Rachel Weisz at home! Comedy dependables, JK SIMMONS, ED HELMS and OWEN WILSON star in FATHER FIGURES [9] (16 FEB), and Bruce Lee’s creation is examined in BIRTH OF THE DRAGON [11] (23 FEB).

D PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON SEASON: To celebrate the release of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, Eden Court have a season of his films—all truly excellent, especially the underrated Punch Drunk Love: BOOGIE NIGHTS (04 FEB), MAGNOLIA (08 FEB), PUNCH DRUNK LOVE (15 FEB), INHERENT VICE (18 FEB) THERE WILL BE BLOOD (21 FEB), and THE MASTER (24 FEB) are all on show and recommended. And we’re just gonna say that a ticket to all would make a top Valentine’s present... Seven movies, seven dates, seven greats.

KIDS What Big Eyes You Have... A couple of attractions of the lupine variety this month, kicking off with the aptly named WOLVES [1] at EDEN COURT on 19 FEB. Presented by the internationally-acclaimed Glasgow dance theatre company Barrowland Ballet, this production explores life in a nurturing wolf pack community set against the dangers of the big bad wolf. In a world of fairytale imagery and played out by intergenerational actors, it examines stories passed on from grandparents to children and finds out how dangerous it is to stray from the path—and who is it most dangerous for? Looks interesting and there’s the added attraction of live music by Mairi Campbell set to an evocative score by Luke Sutherland. A more familiar wolf story is enacted in LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD [2] at EDEN COURT on 21 FEB, albeit not quite as fearsome as some incarnations of the yarn. From the creative team behind the hugely popular Hairy Maclary Show, this version is a fun, original musical for children, with live music and loveable characters. Join Scarlet and her sidekick Stanley the Squirrel as they try to outwit Walter the Wolf and discover that it’s not just the enchanted forest that has magical powers. A forest full of family fun, this show is a joyous new version of the classic fairytale, with none of the attendant savagery that might have startled the little ones.

Get Into The Groove. Born out of the ashes of Rock Ness and focussing on the clubbing element of that enterprise, the Groove concept has proved remarkably successful, now split over both summer and winter iterations. This year’s edition of the latter, GROOVE CAIRNGORM on 23 & 24 FEB, sees a strong line-up for the country’s only music and snowsports festival. EXAMPLE [2], DJ WIRE, 2MANYDJS, NORMAN JAY [1] and the coolest dude around, HUEY MORGAN are the highlights, but there’s plenty more on show including buzz new Scottish band (with a nod back to the 80’s) AVA LOVE, Glasgow based DJ Martyn Henderson aka MASH (mixmag), the Highlands’ own DJ duo LET US PLAY, COLONEL MUSTARD & THE DIJON FIVE, and SHAKA LOVES YOU. If you’re after something more guitar-based, you won’t want to miss NEON WALTZ [5] at BOGBAIN on 17 FEB. The Caithness combo are one of the best young bands in the land, investing their elegant creativity with echoes of post-punk and winning new fans wherever they go. This looks like being the year they turn critical approval into commercial success, so you might never get to see them in such intimate surroundings again. Gig Of The Month. Rathermore seasoned excellence comes from the well-regarded trio of MICHAEL MCGOLDRICK, JOHN MCCUSKER & JOHN DOYLE [4] at EDEN COURT on 20 FEB. Masters of flute, fiddle, song and guitar they have worked with everyone from Bob Dylan to Mark Knopfler to Paul Weller, Joan Baez and Linda Thompson, as well as being an essential part of the Transatlantic Sessions. Should be a good night. What else? How about an anything-might-happen appearance from Peep Show’s SUPER HANS [3] (aka Matt King) at IRONWORKS on 09 FEB? A word too for REG MEUROSS at ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL on 17 FEB and one of the hardest working local musicians ANDY GUNN [5] playing EDEN COURT on 23 FEB as part of a short tour that also takes in Wick, Tain and Ullapool. Classical fans are also well catered for with a trio of performances; BBC SSO (EC 16 FEB), pianist FINGHIN COLLINS (NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE 23 FEB) and SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (EC 03 MAR).

MUSIC2 Copycat Killing? Once upon a time in the Highlands, the only way to hear the latest hits was via your friendly local covers band—US vinyl being hard to come by and radio not yet being with it. So perhaps this is what fuels the apparent Highland love of the Tribute band. We’re too far away and don’t offer a big enough payday for many popular acts to visit the area outside the odd offering from DF Concerts at Ironworks and the ‘on the way up or down’ acts playing Belladrum etc. And so it is—we just can’t get enough of the many copycats out there, and they seem to provide a safer bet for our hardy promoters out there, who all have to make a living, afterall, if not a killing! We look forward to the day that this area is producing enough of it’s own new, original music with a bustling scene with heaving small venues every week that might enable promoters to bring more acts north more regularly and not lose money on being adventurous—but for now, marvel at the range of imitation on offer: If you’re after something from across the pond, you can sample LEGENDS OF AMERICAN COUNTRY (EC, 02 FEB) involving tributes to the music of DOLLY PARTON, JOHNNY CASH, MERLE HAGGARD and KENNY ROGERS, plus new homages to icons GEORGE JONES, CHARLEY PRIDE, PATSY CLINE and DON WILLIAMS; then there’s THE JOHNNY CASH ROADSHOW (EC, 11 FEB); YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND–THE MUSIC OF JAMES TAYLOR & CAROLE KING (EC, 25 FEB); ONE NIGHT OF ELVIS (EC, 02 MAR) and even a bona fide star sort of paying tribute when JIMMY OSMOND appears in MOON RIVER & ME (EC, 14 FEB)— his own ANDY WILLIAMS show (!)—and finally, THE DREAMERS (who used to be ‘Freddie &…’) are at EC on 03 FEB, incorporating a tribute to the EVERLY BROTHERS in the first half of the show. Classic rock gets the tribute treatment with the GUITAR GREATS WORLD TOUR, again at EC, on 28 FEB, celebrating legendary performances by the likes of JIMI HENDRIX, JIMMY PAGE, MARK KNOPFLER, WALTER BECKER, ERIC CLAPTON, ANGUS YOUNG, BRIAN MAY, JOE WALSH, PAUL KOSSOFF, PETER GREEN, PETE TOWNSEND and many more, and on SAT 24 FEB at EC, VAMPIRES ROCK: THE GHOST TRAIN features a soundtrack laden with QUEEN, AC/ DC, MEAT LOAF, JOURNEY, BON JOVI, GUNS‘N’ROSES to name but a few. Elsewhere IRONWORKS give us a couple of Marmite experiences in the form of an homage to Bono et al, U2 2 on 17 FEB and (shudder) a Coldplay-worshipping combo, COLDPLACE on 03 MAR. Meanwhile, a Scottish take on the world’s most popular metal act comes from MACTALLICA at TOOTH & CLAW on 24 FEB.

18

And in the coming months you have DOLLY PARTON, MEATLOAF, FLEETWOOD MAC, GEORGE MICHAEL, AC/DC, LITTLE MIX, ARIANA GRANDE, ROY ORBISON, STATUS QUO, LINKIN PARK, IRON MAIDEN, PRINCE and erm, a metal version of THE BEE GEES to look forward to—there’s even a tribute festival of sorts on the way, in MOCKNESS at Ironworks in June!

Driven Snow. With the winter shaping up to be even more Arctic than ever, this year’s SNOWMAN RALLY [1] on 10 FEB might actually take place against a backdrop of the white stuff. The event is organised by the Highland Car Club and since its inception in 1955 it has been a stern test for everyone from local motoring club members to future World Rally Champions. It’s a true test of driving skill and the ability to handle the harshest of conditions, which makes for quite a spectacle. Worth heading along to witness, but after the death of a spectator at the Rally, a reminder to make sure to watch from a safe position. There’ll be plenty of folk who’ve emerged into the new year with resolutions to get fit and many of them will be doing so by running. Fortunately there are plenty of regular opportunities to test yourself with the KINLOSS TO LOSSIEMOUTH HALF MARATHON on 18 FEB and the NAIRN 10K & FUN RUN on 04 MAR being most notable. We’ve missed the regular local derbies between INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE and ROSS COUNTY, sincerely hoping that the fixtures might be resurrected sooner rather than later. Unfortunately though that prospect looks increasingly possible, it’s not quite in the way we’d hoped as County are starting the year in a perilous position propping up the Premiership. There were high hopes when Owen Coyle took over and he certainly seems to have bought into the spirit of the club, but some unlucky results and several lacklustre performances have made the unthinkable a definite prospect. Games this month against Celtic’s conquerors HEARTS on 17 FEB and PARTICK THISTLE on 28 FEB will hopefully see County show their true colours. ICT meanwhile, having previously seemingly given up hope of promotion, are now looking a little perkier, particularly on the back of a good cup run. There have been far too many draws recently though, so they’ll be looking for at least a couple of wins in games against DUNDEE UTD (03 FEB), GREENOCK MORTON (24 FEB) and BRECHIN (03 MAR).

Old Friends Return. While much of EDEN COURT’s appeal comes from pushing the boundaries with brave new productions, there’s no denying the popularity of return visits from old favourites and there are plenty of those this month. If you’re still just getting over the last series of Strictly…, you can get your dance fix from one of the series’ best-known professionals (and a regular performer at Eden Court) when BRENDAN COLE [5] comes to the venue on 22 & 23 FEB with his latest show, ALL NIGHT LONG. With guest dancers, a 14-piece band and singers, we’re promised selections of all manner of dance styles. Some of us are still hoping for a show just dedicated to the Charleston, but until that comes along, this’ll do nicely. More fine song and dance with another returning treat in the form of HAIRSPRAY [4] from 05–10 FEB. Highly lauded last time it was here, this production, inspired by the film musical that was in turn based on John Waters’ original movie starring Ricki Lake, is a joyous affair set in 1962 Baltimore where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. You can read our full interview with one of the stars of the show, LAYTON WILLIAMS, at whatsonhighlands.com CIRCUS OF HORRORS [2] have regularly impressed EC audiences with their mixture of songs and spectacle and their latest show, VOODOO, coming on 21 FEB is, from what we’ve heard, their best yet. Awoken by a ouija board, a voodoo curse causes devastation: while the city sleeps the night creatures rule the underworld with bizarre and amazing circus acts—some never before seen in the UK. All performed to devil-driven rock’n’roll and the darkest of magic. STEVE STEINMAN went from training as a chef to impersonating Meat Loaf on TV, a career move that resulted not only in the creation of his live Meat Loaf show, but also the highly successful VAMPIRE’S ROCK [3]. Consistently evolving for more than a decade now, and always popular when it comes to EC, the latest incarnation GHOST TRAIN zooms in on 24 FEB. A self-styled “rock’n’roll panto”, expect the vampires of the title along with fire, frenzy and classic rock tunes (see also P18). More spooky goings on in the VELVET EVENING SÉANCE [1] at EDEN COURT on 24 FEB. Set in Victorian times when communicating with the dead was that era’s equivalent of firing up Netflix, this yarn sees a well-known medium on trial for the murder of his brother, an even more acclaimed practitioner of the “art” in order to prove his innocence. Directed by multi-award-winning magician and theatre maker, Ross MacKay, expect some impressive visual trickery embellishing the question of whether the accused is a master manipulator or a man who has somehow found the truth. It’s a particularly strong month at EDEN COURT, with more essential dates for your diary being BALLET WEST’s production of GISELLE [6] on 15 FEB, a brace of excellent comedians in the form of JIMEOIN [7] (18 FEB) and the magnificent RICH HALL [6] (20 FEB), and a musical journey through the life of Rabbie Burns, AE FOND KISS on 21 FEB. Meanwhile, further afield, the SCOTTISH OPERA HIGHLIGHTS show is at the DUTHAC CENTRE in TAIN on 20 FEB. photo: Andy Ross

Celebrities and the well-heeled would regularly take the train up from London, to take in the fresh air, deserted beaches and wide Highland skies, while its most famous visitor, Charlie Chaplin, used to take regular holidays in the town during later life, staying at the Newton Hotel. More recently Tilda Swinton had a house in Nairn, demonstrating the continuing appeal of one of the loveliest towns in the country.

the rest of the meal the waiting staff couldn’t be more helpful. There’s an impressively imaginative set menu as well as a comprehensive à la carte, and we explore a combination of both. My starter, from the former is Chicken Liver & Brandy Pâté, an old-school creation, but one that’s very rarely done well. No such concerns here as it’s beautifully smooth and full of flavour, the brandy a backnote without being intrusive. It’s accompanied by and unusual spiced apple and quince jelly, homemade soda bread and top quality salad leaves and while, as is always the case there isn’t enough bread for the pâté, thankfully we still have some complementary freshly baked rolls with which we were presented on our arrival, served somewhat disconcertingly in what looks like a chef’s hat. My veggie pal has something that you very rarely see on a menu, Arancini, those delightful deep

HSPC 2017 Statistics... December was a very positive month for HSPC with the sales up a substantial 25% on the previous December and market share increasing for the second month running to 45%. The number of properties being inserted for sale with HSPC in December also increased on previous year by 40%; a positive way to end the year. 2017 was slow for properties being registered for sale, HSPC sustained the largest share of the Highlands property market by a long way, the downturn in volume is reflected across all estate agency in the area, and most of Scotland with a few exceptions. The reasons for the downturn in properties coming on to the market for sale, is most likely a mix of post-Brexit reservations amongst other economic & political factors. Although the numbers of properties sold is down on the previous year there was a continual steady demand, with high levels of interest reflected in online unique users numbers, which increased overall for the year by 3%.

Local knowledge. ica property is A world of difference. sponsored by 01463 231173 HSPC Sarah Woodcock, HSPC Manager comments:

“Last year the low volume of registrations meant it was hard to satisfy levels of interest, this in turn meant time to sell shortened as buyers had less choice. HSPC’s market share continued to be the highest in Highlands through 2017. The market remains a sellers market with buyers often taking longer to find their ideal property and acting quickly to offer when they do; due to decreased numbers selling. Whither this picture of low insertions and stable, relatively quick sales will continue is hard to say, hopefully confidence will start to return with more people wanting to sell, and meeting the demand of potential buyers. It’s very positive for HSPC that during a slower year we continue to lead the market and solicitor firms remain at the front of Highland Estate agency providing excellent, affordable expertise and care for their clients property sales”.
