ART P07

Another year rolls around—wonder what Ol’ Mr Eighteen has in store for us all? Surprises aplenty we’d guess. However, entertainment-wise, you can rely on Mrs January to provide some predictable, reliable fayre. The Panto continues, Scottish Ballet bring a new-old Nutcracker, Sled Dogs will Rally, some Oscar hopefuls are released at the cinema, the Banff Mountain Film Fest pops up, and Burns Night beckons. There’s also a belated Highland album launch from Julie Fowlis, a clutch of football fixtures, and over in the wings of Feb, energetic musical smash Hairspray warms up...

ART The Old & The New. You can pretty much guarantee that any exhibition at KILMORACK GALLERY will be worth checking out and their Winter Show running all the way to 10 MAR is no exception. Many of the gallery’s favourite artists are featured including JOYCE W CAIRNS [2], ILLONA MORRICE [3], HELEN DENERLEY, KIRSTIE COHEN, JOHN JOHNSTONE [1], CARINA PRIGMORE and ALAN MCGOWAN. Works on show range from abstract to representational via some delightful sculptures, all linked by a certain emotive power. And the gallery itself is always most welcoming at this time of year, the red walls and wood-burning stove providing a fine space in which to peruse the art. Talking of interesting spaces, the UPSTAIRS gallery above HRI Munro architects in Academy Street continues to provide an interesting outlet for new artists. Their latest show, LAND SHAPES [4] (running until 02 FEB) features Tain based photographer MICHAEL GALLACHER, who describes the exhibition thus:

“In my landscape photography I capture the shape and scale of the land looking at both natural and manmade structures and how they interact. In contrast my more abstract iPhone work is composed of numerous shots taken across locations, using found patterns, repetition and colour. This exhibition takes the viewer from near my home in Easter Ross all the way up to the far North coast.”

Ebbing and Flow… From the much anticipated ‘Three Billboards…’ to ‘Human Flow’, there’s a brilliantly diverse array of films available to view on the big screen this month. Some of those films are going to feature in the major AWARDS events—but which ones? Titles you’re quite likely to hear read out plenty of times will certainly include Martin McDonagh’s aforementioned apparently-awesome, snappily scripted THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE OF EBBING, MISSOURI [1] (12 JAN VUE, FRI 26 JAN–THU 01 FEB EC) with already nomination-gaining performances from FRANCES MCDORMAND, WOODY HARRELSON and SAM ROCKWELL; Spielberg’s timely historical political drama, THE POST [2] (19 JAN VUE) with TOM HANKS, MERYL STREEP, SARAH PAULSON and BOB ODENKIRK, James Franco’s hilarious THE DISASTER ARTIST [3] (FRI 05–THU 11 JAN EC), and award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, MOLLY’S GAME [4] (01 JAN VUE, FRI 26 JAN–THU 01 FEB EC) with a forceful JESSICA CHASTAIN, plus IDRIS ELBA, KEVIN COSTNER and MICHAEL CERA. Gong-tastic! Also aimed up there—but we’re not so confident about—are GARY OLDMAN adopting Churchill make-up in DARKEST HOUR [5] (12 JAN VUE, FRI 12–THU 25 JAN EC), and Ridley Scott’s look at the J. Paul Getty refuses to pay ransom episode in ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD (05 JAN VUE) in which CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER replaces all of Kevin Spacey’s scenes. COMEDY-wise, too weird perhaps for mainstream laughs is BRIGSBY BEAR [6] (FRI 12–TUE 16 JAN EC) with KYLE MOONEY, MARK HAMILL and GREG KINNEAR in a quirky and touching tale; Ben Stiller reprises his role as middle aged under achiever in BRAD’S STATUS [7] (05 JAN VUE), and THE ROCK looks for easy laughs alongside Inverness’ KAREN GILLAN with KEVIN HART and JACK BLACK in JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE (FRI 19–WED 24 JAN EC). What about the KIDS? There’s some long holidays to fill, eh—well, you get to choose between Pixar’s newie—the Mexican Day Of The Dead-inspired COCO [8] (19 JAN VUE), or the mega-franchise that is MY LITTLE PONY [9] (SAT 06 & SUN 07 JAN EC). Good luck with that, parents! Outside of the big studio releases, the most compelling DRAMA would seem to be MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND [10] (FRI 05–MON 08 JAN EC), winner of a SXSW grand jury best film prize, a tense, stylish and disturbing immigrant survival story and impressive directorial debut from Spanish actress ANA ASENSIO. Well worth investing your time in. Also of interest, BEACH RATS [11] (05 & 06 JAN EC), about a Brooklyn teen struggling with competing sexualities, MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART [12] (SAT 20 & SUN 21 JAN EC) Jia Zhangke’s decades-spanning epic (1999–2025) exploring the Chinese economic boom and the effects on families to moving effect, and HOSTILES [13] (05 JAN VUE; FRI 19–THU 25 JAN EC) in tensely familiar Nu-Western territory with a classy cast including CHRISTIAN BALE, ROSAMUND PIKE and BEN FOSTER. Cinema is a great artform in itself obviously, but note two ART FILMS this month— exiled Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s HUMAN FLOW (WED 10 & THU 11 JAN EC), compellingly laying bare the scale of mass migration of refugees across Europe and the often shamefully hostile reaction to their arrival, and also Exhibition On Screen: CÉZANNE PORTRAITS OF LIFE (23 JAN EC). There are 3 FILM SEASONS at Eden Court this month, they being: Inverness Film Fans’ Future From the Past (FFTP) series, comprising NETWORK (23 JAN EC), BEING THERE (06 FEB EC), V FOR VENDETTA [14] (20 FEB EC)— all excellent and with great pertinence to the present reality; Fokus is a season of German films, including THE

11

CULPABLE DIE VERFEHLUNG (04 JAN EC), MARIJA (08 JAN EC), HOUSE WITHOUT ROOF HAUS OHNE DACH (17 JAN EC), and STEFAN ZWEIG: FAREWELL TO EUROPE VOR DER MORGENRÖTE (29 JAN EC); and BFI’s Thriller On Tour (BFI/ToT) collection involves THE HITCH-HIKER (07 JAN@ EC), THE VANISHING (WED 10 & THU 11 JAN EC), IN THE CUT (14 JAN EC), THE CONVERSATION (19 JAN EC), and THE WAGES OF FEAR (22 JAN EC). TURKEYS AFTER CHRISTMAS?: Well, evidently we don’t hold a great deal of faith in the following flicks being worth shelling out for—we wonder why some even got past the pitch... in 12 STRONG (26 JAN VUE) the US won the war on terror, on horseback, right after 911—erm... CHRIS HEMSWORTH and MICHAEL SHANNON are among those who should know better. VERA FARMIGA turns up for the bucks in another stupid Taken-style jaunt for LIAM NEESON in THE COMMUTER (19 JAN VUE), MATT DAMON, CHRISTOPH WALTZ AND KRISTEN WIIG fell for a story where we get more sustainable by DOWNSIZING (19 JAN VUE), blah, while Aardman studios might have struck gold—but look like they’ve lost the plot—in EARLY MAN (26 JAN VUE), and LAST FLAG FLYING (26 JAN VUE) shows the ‘macho-US-rules’ side of Richard Linklater with STEVE CARELL, BRYAN CRANSTON and LAURENCE FISHBURNE sticking tightly to ex army-buddy formula, and you’ll either love or hate INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY (12 JAN VUE). Happy viewing all!

Highland Traditions… Is it just us, or has BURNS NIGHT been celebrated with rather more gusto in recent years after several decades of being something of an afterthought? Perhaps it’s something to do with a contemporary focus on Scottish identity, or maybe just relief at having an event to build a good night around in the gloomy post Xmas/Hogmanay hiatus of Austerity Britain. Whatever the case, we’ll be tucking into the haggis and raising a glass to Rabbie this month. Perhaps at the TORRIDON [2] Burns Night Special at IRONWORKS on 27 JAN. Firm favourites up here, particularly at Belladrum, the folk rockers should provide their own rumbustious take on a tribute to the poet while ensuring much love from locals with songs like their barnstorming ‘Highland Girl’. Over at EDEN COURT there’s another celebration of the great man with the BIG BURNS STRAMASH on 27 JAN with the MONSTER CEILIDH BAND [3], an event that’s itself becoming something of a local tradition. Read more about it on p29. Rabbie Burns may be an age-old national treasure, but a rather more modern one is JULIE FOWLIS [1] who, though an established force among aficionados of Gaelic music has more recently been unveiled to a wider audience thanks to soundtracking the film Brave and appearing on the likes of the Transatlantic Sessions. Her latest album, ‘alterum’, released in October, shot to the top of the singer/songwriter charts and at the time of writing is still sitting at No.1 for the Amazon Folk bestsellers. In addition, the sleeve features an outfit from local designer Heidi Soos and words from Invernessian best-selling author Ali Smith, while plenty of Highland musicians play on the album, which contains her most captivating songs to date. Her show at EDEN COURT on 28 JAN should emphasise how lucky we are to have her as a flagbearer for Highland and Gaelic culture. More traditional folk excellence at EDEN COURT on 03 FEB in the form of leading Uilleann piper CALUM STEWART [4], showcasing his new album ‘Tales From The North’ Calum’s lyrical playing style is rooted in the traditional music of the North of Scotland, his distinct musical voice developed through collaborations within the Scottish, Irish and Breton traditions. If you prefer something classical there are a couple of treats in store, namely the gloriously waltztastic RSNO VIENNESE GALA [5] at EDEN COURT on 10 JAN and the PAVRI CLARINET TRIO at NAIRN COMMUNITY AND ART CENTRE on 15 JAN, the Pavri’s being FALI (piano) and NAOMI (cello) accompanying the clarinet of JEAN JOHNSON [6].

SATURDAY 31ST MARCH Thurso Legion and Mackays Hotel, Wick SUNDAY 1ST APRIL The Ironworks Venue, Inverness

We caught up with singer-songwriter JULIE FOWLIS ahead of the Highland launch of her new album ‘alterum’ at EDEN COURT on Sun 28 Jan… ■ Tell us about the new album. Why “alterum”? It comes from “alterum orbem terrarum eam appellant” (‘they call it the other world’) by Gaius Plinius Secundus (known as Pliny the Elder AD 23–AD 79) and it reminded me of a quote from Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio 2/6 Music) who once described my songs ‘like beautiful messages from another world’. I was struck at how these traditional Gaelic songs could seem so exotic and otherworldly, in a landscape where they have existed for hundreds of years. The album started life as a project exploring the songs of the Gaelic ‘otherworld’ and developed into an exploration of ‘other worlds’. ■ Mary Chapin Carpenter guests on it. How did you meet? On the Transatlantic Sessions TV series. We struck up a friendship immediately and have had the opportunity to sing together since then. She was so enthusiastic to sing in Gaelic, and so I invited her not only to sing in English with me, but in Gaelic too, which she did with expert precision! ■ We’re pleased to see words on the sleeve from Invernessian author Ali Smith. Were you mutual fans? How did she get involved? I was so thrilled that Ali agreed to write the foreword. I am such a fan. We actually first met when she was the guest curator for the Brighton Arts Festival. She invited myself and the band to come and perform. We kept in touch since that time. I’m so delighted she agreed to be a part of it. ■ It’s a striking sleeve. Tell us more about it. I commissioned Highland photographer and artist Craig Mackay (Pictii) to shoot and design the imagery for the album. He listened to some of the music beforehand and we talked at length about the content and narrative of the record. The result is his visual interpretation of the music.

JULIE FOWLIS: ‘alterum’ Album Launch Eden Court, Sun 28 Jan 2018

■ How has your life changed since “Brave”? What did you think of the finished film when you saw it? It hasn’t really changed my life - although the average age of our audiences in the US has definitely lowered as a result! I enjoyed working with the Disney Pixar team immensely. They were dedicated, creative and enthusiastic. The remain great friends of ours.

Interesting question. I consider many, but when I focus on a song, it almost always gets finished off. I’d say over 80% of material I work on ends up somewhere.

■ Do you dream in Gaelic? Ha! Yes I do sometimes.

■ What are your plans for 2018? Lots! Celtic Connections, Transatlantic Sessions UK tour, new music, touring, new recordings and collaborations. But first - we launch our new album ‘alterum’ in Eden Court on 28 Jan.

■ How good a language is Gaelic for songwriting/ singing in terms of the actual sound of the words? It matters greatly in Gaelic traditional singing, yes. You perhaps notice it most in the mouth music!

■ What song are you proudest of? Learning Moladh Uibhist, ‘In Praise of Uist’ which was the first big song that I ever learned and performed, and the one song I ever sang at a competition.

■ What’s your creative routine? How many songs turn out to be false starts or never get finished?

SPECIALS Bard, Birds & Banff... We hope you’ll all be celebrating BURNS NIGHT this month, either at home or at one of the public events, most notable of which is the BIG BURNS STRAMASH at EDEN COURT, a week of events celebrating the Bard, climaxing in the RAVIN’ CEILIDH on SAT 27 JAN, wherein the MONSTER CEILIDH BAND will fuse traditional tunes with drum’n’bass beats, something Rabbie would no doubt approve of. There’ll be lots of other elements to the Stramash, details of which are yet to be finalised, so check out the whatsonhighlands website for all the latest news. This is the time of year when people often decide to take up new interests and if you’ve ever been tempted by the idea of birdwatching there are plenty of talks and events to grab your attention, starting with a flurry of activity at the turn of the year. ON MON 01 JAN at the GRANT ARMS HOTEL in GRANTOWN ON SPEY, Ashley Grove is giving a talk on WONDERFUL WINTER WILDLIFE, focussing on the numerous breeds that flock here at this time of year, while at the same venue the next night, TUE 02 JAN, Nigel Redman looks further afield at the HORN OF AFRICA, dubbed “Africa’s endemic hotspot”, an extraordinarily rich area for birds with more than 1000 species recorded. On WED 03, it’s the annual RSPB bird count so you can add your own data by making a note of what’s in your garden. On THU 18 JAN, Grant Arms Hotel is again the place to be for a talk by West Wales Warden Ed Stubbings about SKOMER ISLAND off the Pembrokeshire coast, home to the largest colony of Manx Shearwaters on earth as well as vast numbers of other seabirds including Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Storm Petrels. He’s speaking there again on SAT 20 JAN, concentrating on SHEARWATERS. FRI 26 JAN sees Saranne Bish give a Nairn Literary Institute talk at NAIRN FREE CHURCH on LIFE AS A COUNTRYSIDE RANGER IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS, then on SAT 27 JAN at GREYFRIARS FREE CHURCH in Inverness, there’s an illustrated RSPB Group talk by Isobel Morgan from the Central Highland Reserve, while earlier in the day you’ll actually be able to see birds for yourself on the RSPB group’s JANUARY FIELD TRIP. For more details e-mail doreen.a.manson@gmail.com If you’d like to follow the expeditions of some of today’s most incredible adventurers and see amazing footage of adrenaline packed action sports and be inspired by thought-provoking pieces shot from the far flung corners of the globe, then EDEN COURT is the place to be on 31 JAN & 01 FEB for the BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL [1]—when all the glories of people hanging from rocks by their little finger and scaling cliff faces like mountain goats will be on show. There are two extraordinary collections of short films on offer—their ‘RED’ series of films show on Wed 31 Jan, whilst on Thu 01 Feb you can see the ‘BLUE’ series. Truly stunning films to take your breath away. Recommended. More SPECIALS features and events at: whatsonhighlands.com

Soccer’n’Sleds… One of the few sensible initiatives in the largely loopy world of Scottish football has been the introduction of a winter break. Whether it’s out of concern for the welfare of players or a pragmatic response to the fact that inclement weather would have caused mass abandonments is still open to debate, but it does mean that two significant matches for ROSS COUNTY don’t come until the end of the month. While those games—against RANGERS (27 JAN) & ABERDEEN (31 JAN)—look tough on paper, County are always capable of going toe to toe with the big boys, so there might be points to be had. ICT don’t get a winter break in their league, so they’ll be sweeping away the snow and pressing on with matches against LIVINGSTON (02 JAN), QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (13 JAN) and DUNDEE UTD (03 FEB) when, it goes without saying, a run of victories would be good. While their defence is as mean as they come, they ought to be making some New Year resolutions about remembering how to score. Starting… now! We always look forward to the AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY [1] (27 JAN), mainly because the dogs are among the most beautiful creatures on earth, with eyes bluer than oceans and an insatiable desire to bound through the snow. The spectacle is always good too, with thousands of devotees gathering to race along forest tracks, If you’ve never witnessed it before, head along and prepare to feel your jaw drop. Similarly tough constitutions are at the core of every shinty player, as you’ll see if you mosey along to BALGATE PARK, KILTARLITY on 02 JAN at 1pm for a fierce local derby as LOVAT and BEAULY contest the LOVAT CUP.

Every year since 1984, mushers from across the UK have gathered in the forests around Aviemore for the biggest event in the British sled dog racing calendar, The Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled Dog Rally. Organised by the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain, conjunction with Forestry Commission Scotland, the race is run on forest trails around the beautiful Loch Morlich, in the shadow of the Cairngorm mountains. From an original of only 12 teams, the race is now the largest event of its kind in the UK, with over 1,000 sled dogs and 250 mushers. The race features teams of between two and eight dogs pulling their musher on a sled around a four to seven mile trail. If there’s no snow at ground level for the event, the races still go on with mushers using a three-wheeled rig that looks like a tricycle without a seat.

Last of the Holiday Magic The festivities may be over, but there’s still a chance to hang on to the last of the holiday spirit by heading along to the Eden Court panto, SNOW WHITE, which runs until 07 JAN. All the usual fun and some extra characters introduced to the original yarn, with the distinct possibility that the words “he’s behind you!” will be uttered at some point.

More memories of Xmas are rekindled by THE NUTCRACKER [1] at EDEN COURT from 24–27 JAN, SCOTTISH BALLET’s latest production, originally devised in 1973 by the founding Artistic Director, PETER DARRELL and revived to widespread acclaim in 2014. Experience a fantastical adventure with a little girl called Clara, as she drifts off to sleep on Christmas Eve. She meets her Prince, confronted by battle of larger-than-life mice and rats, and is whisked into the luscious land of sweets. It even snows on stage! Tchaikovsky’s fabulous score is performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, which should make for a sumptuous experience.

Equally charming and just as successful, if a little more edgily camp, is HAIRSPRAY, which returns to EDEN COURT (05–10 FEB) after a successful run up here last spring. Inspired by John Waters’ semi-autobiographical movie, we’re whisked to 1962 Baltimore where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her newfound fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way! Starring BRENDA EDWARDS (X Factor, Chicago), MATT RIXON (The Ladykillers), NORMAN PACE (Hale & Pace) & LAYTON WILLIAMS* (Rent, Bad Education), Hairspray features a heap of great songs and was arguably responsible for the commercial revival of the crowd-pleasing musical in recent years. Don’t miss your chance to WIN a pair of tickets via our promo on page 9. *See our interview with Layton Williams, p37 >>>

Another interesting looking musical is THE BRODIE BURNS EXPERIENCE at BRODIE CASTLE from 24–26 JAN, well-timed for Burns Night celebrations. Bizarrely, it’s billed as being “based on an idea by David Gest”, the late exhusband of Liza Minelli and curious confidant of Michael Jackson, though written by Tish Tindall. Turning the life and works of our national poet into a musical seems an excellent idea, so we’re hoping this production does him justice. On Wed 24 there are schools workshops at 11am and 1pm, then on Thu 25 itself there is the Burns Night Gala Performance from 7.30pm—with pre-show drinks and canapes, a dram and shortbread during the interval and a meet and greet with the cast after the show—and then a final performance on the Fri 26 at 7.30pm. HAIRSPRAY @ Eden Court, 7.30pm. The smash hit musical comedy Hairspray is back! After a sell-out run last year the all-singing, alldancing production returns to Inverness in February 2018! It’s Baltimore, 1962 where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way!

HAIRSPRAY: Layton Williams Eden Court, Mon 05–Sat 10 Feb 2018

We caught up with actor LAYTON WILLIAMS (who plays Tracy Turnblad’s pal, Seaweed) as the smash musical ‘Hairspray’ returns to EDEN COURT from Mon 05 Feb…

a relevant time whether that is today, 10 or 30 years ago. We have always been going through struggles, there is always some sort of craziness going on in the world so we need that release. People need that 2-3 hours of being able to laugh and cry and be entertained and I think Hairspray is the perfect show for that.

■ For those who don’t know, what’s the story of Hairspray? Hairspray is a show for everyone! It is loosely based on a true story. Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray is about a girl called Tracy Turnblad who dreams of being on this dance show, The Corny Collins Show. But, Tracy is not allowed on the show because they say she is too big and she doesn’t look like the people that are already on the show. Tracy meets my character, Seaweed, in detention and through dancing and having fun, he gives Tracy the confidence and belief in herself that you can do what you want no matter who you are, where you are from, what you look like. Eventually she gets on The Corny Collins Show and she realises that it’s not just her that has been denied approval. She begins to fight for Seaweed and his friends to be able to dance with her on The Corny Collins Show. We all riot together for equality and to make The Corny Collins Show integrated. It’s an incredibly fun show but also spreading a really important message at the same time. It’s a really fabulous show for everybody!

■ Have you seen the original John Waters film? If so, what did you think of it? Yes – I loved it! The one released 10 years with Zac Efron etc, was the one I would normally recall in my head when I think of Hairspray because that was the one I grew up on and we were all obsessed with it! Weirdly enough when we were performing in Cardiff, we were doing a Sunday matinee show and the original producer of the film was in the audience of the show. So, we met her after, it was crazy! She was talking to us about all the memories watching our performance had bought back to her and how lovely it was to see the show. It was so cool!

■ Why do you think it has been such a successful musical? I think no matter when the show has been out or when the movies have been aired, it has always been

■ Been to the Highlands before? Any plans while you’re up here? Yes, I have been to the highlands three or four times. I have been canoeing in Loch Ness, sadly didn’t see the monster though! I lived in a caravan there actually on my first ever tour. I love it! I am going there in December to teach my Dance workshop so I will be there for a little before I start performing with Hairspray so that should be fun!

EATING OUT

Culloden Moor Inn Culloden Moor, Inverness 01463 790 022 It’s likely that people in Hastings have something in common with the residents of Culloden in that visitors think of it as nothing more than a place where there was a battle, rather than a living, breathing community in its own right. In the case of Hastings it technically isn’t even a battle site. That’s in Battle. Or, if recent research is to be believed, it’s somewhere else entirely. At least there’s no argument about the veracity of Culloden’s claim to dust-up status, the last scrap on British soil having taken place on the bleak, expansive moor five miles from Inverness. And, over 270 years after the event, the site is not only preserved with dignity, but blessed with a fine Visitor Centre that’s been winning awards all over the place. There’s no avoiding the sombre atmosphere that cloaks the

landscape of Culloden Moor itself, nor any attempt to whitewash the carnage of the battle and its aftermath, but it’s actually a rather lovely suburb of the city. So much so that developers are already trying to encroach rather closer than some find comfortable to the site of the conflict, keen to bring even more residents to an area that’s already seen a population spike thanks to the student population at the new university campus a couple of miles away. For such a thriving area however, there are relatively few places to eat or drink. There is the nearby Culloden House Hotel, an immaculate spot for gracious hospitality and fine dining that we reviewed earlier in the year, but that’s a place for special occasions, not somewhere you regularly drop into for a bite to eat.

Thank goodness then for Culloden Moor Inn. Or, as it’s known to locals (and still billed on its frontage), The Keppoch. A squat, rather ugly building hunched by the side of the road, it’s obviously been here for years, though manages to radiate history without much in the way of enticing charm. Inside it’s quite a different story, the spacious bar and dining area allowing for comfy sofas and widely spaced tables, walls covered in all sorts of Battle Of Culloden related paintings. There’s definitely enough to attract tourists, but not so overwhelming as to come across like a theme pub. And it certainly seems to be popular with many of the tables full even on a Thursday lunchtime with the tourist season long over. Quite a few of them seem to be regulars too, tucking

into their meals with gusto and taking advantage of the generous portions for which the place seems to be widely lauded. The fare on offer is your usual pub grub, though with a few unusual twists, like my pal’s starter of Vegetable Tart. It’s a promising start to proceedings with beautifully light pastry and a nice mix of roasted vegetables topped with goats cheese and accompanied by a crisp salad that’s a cut above the usual soggy garnish. And very tasty it is too. As is my starter of Garlic Mushrooms. An indulgently rich affair, sautéed mushies are slathered in a creamy sauce on garlic bread and again accompanied by a nice fresh salad. There’s nothing groundbreaking about it, but there doesn’t need to be when it tastes as good as this.

curious red pepper marmalade is pronounced “a bit weird”, with the absence of usual Middle Eastern elements like hummus and tzatziki being wistfully noted. Perfectly adequate and an interesting vegetarian option, but definitely room for improvement with a few tweaks. Puddings are an all round success though. For my pal it’s an indulgently rich Chocolate Fudge Cake, served warm with excellent ice cream and, just to invest things with a bit more decadence, a gooey chocolate sauce. It’s polished off in a trice which is as good a seal of approval as you can get.

My dessert is Drambuie Crème Brûlée, a risky option since it’s a drink I haven’t revisited for many a year and recall being alarmingly sickly sweet. Here though it’s used subtly as a background taste rather than dominating and while My main is a dish that consistently the brûlée itself is just on the gets recommended by people verge of graininess, it’s a pretty who’ve eaten here, Steak and good effort, the crispy sugar top Ale Pie. If there’s quibble to having just the right thinness be had it’s that for some of us to crack under a whack from a a pie has to have pastry both spoon without being likely to injure top and bottom, whereas here passing diners. it’s just a meat filled dish with Prices are a little steeper than a pastry hat on. And that’s a other pubs in town, but service is shame because the wonderfully flaky chapeau is irresistable when friendly and it’s a lovely place to while away a few hours. Not quite soaked in gravy. Still, the meat inside the pie is beautifully tender Culloden’s biggest claim to fame, but a definite contender. and accompanying chips nicely cooked.
