HONORS AND DISTINCTION DESIGNATIONS

College of Science and Engineering degree candidates may graduate with either Latin Honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) or with distinction (distinction or high distinction) or both. Honors citations are provisional and do not become official until all requirements for the award indicated are fulfilled.

Latin Honors Awards: Cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude graduates complete honors requirements, including research leading to an honors thesis project in their major. Students graduating cum laude have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 for the

last 60 graded credits at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities (UMTC). Magna cum laude awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.66 and summa cum laude awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 on the final 60 graded credits at UMTC.

Degrees with Distinction: Students earn graduation “with distinction” or “with high distinction” based on cumulative grade point average at UMTC with at least 60 graded credits completed at UMTC. Students graduating “with distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation; students graduating “with high distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation. Gold honor cords are worn by students who are graduating with distinction, and maroon and gold honor cords are for those students graduating with high distinction.

CEREMONIAL MACE

The University of Minnesota’s ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal carried by a respected faculty member or high-ranking university administrator to lead the official procession. Processions often feature a ceremonial mace at formal academic occasions. The history of the civic mace (carried by the sergeants-at-arms) begins around the middle of the 13th century. It has been a commencement tradition at the University of Minnesota since 1961.

DECORATIVE STOLES

Decorative stoles worn around the neck represent a variety of affiliations with the University, fraternities, ethnic clubs, or professional organizations.

HISTORY OF TASSEL COLOR

In the late 19th century the Intercollegiate Commission adopted a code of academic dress. Tassel colors chosen had traditional meanings. Science and engineering were given golden yellow and orange to signify the wealth of knowledge produced by research.

Note: Great care is taken to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in this commencement program; however, there may be unintended errors or changes without notice. This is not an official University of Minnesota graduation list.

About the Student Speaker

JOSHUA ICHEN

Bachelor of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Joshua Ichen is graduating with a Bachelor of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISyE). Despite being from a small town in southern Wisconsin, he has always had big dreams. After watching his dad’s uncle fly into outer space aboard the Soyuz 13 in 2020, Joshua knew he would do his best to follow in his footsteps.

Newly transferred into ISyE his sophomore year, Joshua utilized a shortest path algorithm on Minneapolis crime data overlaid on the campus region for an open-ended class project. Because of his concern for personal safety, this application would allow users to determine the theoretical safest route between any two points on the University campus. This would later become the foundation of a working product created in an Entrepreneurship course, with plans to continue after graduating. Gaining some experience in on-campus safety, Joshua then took a seat on the Student Senate with the Campus Safety Committee for the last two years of his degree.

Throughout his time at the University of Minnesota, Joshua continued to challenge himself in the classroom. After scoring the highest grade on a final exam for a graduate level class, he was invited to do research on allocation mechanisms with that professor the following semester. Additionally, Joshua used his technicaldriven and communication skills to compete and place at the MinneMUDAC Data Competition for forecasting Twins season ticket sales. Joshua was recognized for his hard work during his academic career by receiving the Dr. Alan L. Eliason Undergraduate Achievement in ISyE Award.

In his free time, Joshua busied himself by staying active and making new friends. He was an active member in Greek Life and Club Tennis throughout his four years at the University of Minnesota and was blessed with traveling to events and tournaments with incredible people. When Joshua wasn’t busy with those commitments, chances are high he was playing some kind of intramural sport. His well-rounded undergraduate experience was praised when he was selected to represent the University on the Homecoming Royalty Court.

During the summers, Joshua worked in several unique settings for engineering internships. Employed at both big and small companies, he gained valuable experience in the manufacturing setting of both. It was during an internship after his sophomore year that Joshua found a love for medical device manufacturing, and the difference it could make in the world. After graduation, Joshua will begin working full-time at Boston Scientific in Maple Grove as an Industrial Engineer. Joshua would first like to express a huge thank you to his loving family - Jason, Karen, and Jordan - who have provided him with unwavering support through every stage of his life. He would also like to praise all of the diverse communities he has been a part of on campus that have pushed him to be the person he is today. Finally, he is full of gratitude towards the beautiful University he is proud to call home. Although it is often extremely cold, he feels that his heart has never felt so warm throughout these past four years.
