From the Editors... It seems incomprehensible that 2019 is drawing to a close and we will soon be entering a new decade. Twenty-Twenty is a phrase often used to describe perfect vision and so seemed the ideal topic for our final issue of 2019 and the first issue of the new decade – Looking forward to 2020. What’s in store for 2020? In the next ten years, the Hunter’s population is predicted to grow significantly as increasing numbers of people relocate to the home of Australia’s largest regional economy, which is valued at more than $40 billion annually. This surge in population will ultimately drive our infrastructure and cultural development, so this month Michelle Meehan speaks to our local Lord Mayors to find out what’s on the drawing board for each local council and ultimately for our community. From festivals to smart beaches, koala sanctuaries to athletics centres and airports, it looks like our region is set to enjoy the full gamut of facilities of the coming years. Read more about what's in store on page 12. Unsurprisingly, organising an event like the annual Christmas Lights Spectacular isn’t just an end-of-year endeavour – it’s a year-round job – but all of us can enjoy all the hard work behind the scenes throughout December and January (switching off on Australia Day). If you’ve never been to this unique and spectacular event, or even if you’re a regular, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this year. Go behind the scenes and find out how Hunter Valley Gardens pulls off this magnificent feat on page 26. The Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery has been a cultural fixture in the Lake Mac community since its establishment in 1980. Located right on the shores of the lake, it’s long been renowned for its high-quality programming, showcasing contemporary visual arts, craft and design. But as its fortieth anniversary nears, the venue is moving into its next phase with a new look, new exhibitions and a new name – MAC: Museum of Art and Culture yapang. Find out more in this month’s issue. The team at intouch are also looking forward to 2020 and another year of getting to know some of our favourite people, places and events. As the only locally owned and produced magazine in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, it's our pleasure to share all the great things about living in the Hunter to our community and we look forward to doing so for many more decades! From our family to yours, we wish you a fabulous 2020.

19-Twenty

Up!

Friday, 14 February 2020

Australian Guitar group 19-Twenty have been whipping up a frenzy on the festival scene. They are electric. An infectious riff and groove-based blue-billy-grass-rockin'-roots band. Imagine walking into a bar a little bit cut and a little bent sideways. You look to the stage; lights are turned down, amps cranked up. You hear one-part Gary Clark Jnr, onepart Black Keys, and a whole lot of drunken sailor. This is what the latest single ‘Sailor Jerry’ conjures. The 19-Twenty lads have been performing their high-energy sonic-party nationally, headlining sell-out shows and festivals in all states and territories. Always on the road or in the sky, they have toured seven times around Oz and performed gigs throughout Europe. Performing anywhere and everywhere, this straight-up 100% independent act have been blazing throughout Europe and Australia and gaining new music fans from their live shows. "Ask for forgiveness, not for permission. No rules, no limits. The closest to punk the Blues will ever get. Raucous and manic." "One of the most exciting riff and groove-based blues and roots acts emerging from the east coast of OZ!" – Tone Deaf; "These guys are sick!" – Ash Grunwald; "Who the hell is this guy? He definitely has the talent!" – Ian Moss.

into the workforce. Meanwhile, the festive season couldn’t be a better time to disconnect the autopilot and feel the thrill of free-fall. Taurus 21 April – 20 May Endless problems have chipped away at many Taurean spirits. Not so now. Despite feeling tired, you should find this a triumphant month. No longer the victim, you’ll be mounting sharper defences. Professionally, you’re better able to make the right choices. Should love or unexpected romance mount a sneak attack, relax - it’s all friendly fire. Travel, too, will bring surprises. Looks like a fabulous festive season ahead.

Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars in December. For your January Horoscopes, visit www.intouchmagazine.com.au

STAR OF THE MONTH Sagittarius 22 November – December 21 As one year spins into another, the planets encourage a review. Clearing the bills is an obvious move, but one that should start in the new year. It’d be daft not to enjoy the Christmas fun! After February, you should grab some quiet moments for that personal recap. There’s no hurry - all should be done at a gradual, graceful pace. Soon enough, the only surviving situations will be those of your choosing. In the meantime, December brings a time for raiding the sales. Don’t be shy about spending a few dollars - you deserve it, guilt-free. For now, you need only exert yourself in the pursuit of pleasure. Clear head and heart in preparation for a better, bolder 2020.

Capricorn December 22 – January 19 Tidy your affairs early in the month, and you can look forward to a stress-free Christmas. It’s been a tough year, so allow more than a few days for rest. Life feels happier after the 24th, with your social life and sexuality soaring. And don’t worry too much about money. The planets stop siphoning Capricorn wallets and do their pilfering elsewhere. The new year celebrations bring extra festivities, and perhaps some new romance. Aquarius 20 January – 18 February With another year coming to an end, Aquarians are granted the right to reflect. Rather than move forward, you’re likely to pore over past mistakes. Don’t be so hard on yourself. With hindsight, these “mistakes” were probably blessings in disguise. If you see this as a chance to lay old demons to rest, you can resolve grievances rather than let them fester. Then allow yourself a few weeks to just relax and have fun. Enjoy the festivities ahead. Pisces 19 February – 20 March Confusing emotions plague early December, as do erratic desires. It’s not until the festivities start that a hint of confidence enables you to regain control. Ask for what you want; it’s counterproductive to feign satisfaction. Early in 2020, look forward to substantial changes at work and at home. Meanwhile, you may as well surrender what’s left of your finances to the silly season. Aries 21 March – 20 April The pursuit of happiness can be difficult. Still, it shouldn’t stop you from having fun. Whether you’re exploring romance or being flirtatious, this month Ariens are ready to take wilder risks. Unfortunately, it’s not all play. By the new year, you’re jostled back 10 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Gemini 21 May – 21 June Saturn might try to send your financial confidence into a spin, but Jupiter helps lift your spirits. If you’re wondering what could make life happier, think love and friendship - just the thing for the festive season. Be aware, though, that others may not be honest with financial facts and it’s up to you to prise the truth out of them. This could call for a degree of cunning and patience. It may take until the new year to see the real figures. Cancer 22 June – 22 July With most enjoying the silly season, there could be a noticeable lack of Cancerians in the conga line. Instead, you’re determined to claim a triumphant year’s end - but there’s a danger of overload. Finish your tasks, but still give festivities a look-in. Your reward? Sentimental ties may be renewed. Singles are happily surprised, while couples opt for a change in scenery — a fabulous end to a busy year. Leo 23 July – 22 August Slow down, Leo. December asks that you let some of that stress fall away. You should rediscover the art of play, and just before all the Christmas madness starts, you can expect finances to improve. If so, don’t deny yourself a few luxuries. The same applies to love. You may find a karmically linked soul but watch your expectations. The higher you place a friend or lover on a pedestal, the further they have to fall. Virgo 23 August – 22 September Chances are you have a host of unfinished projects that are ready to be trashed. Great timing, as the cosmos offers exciting new starts for the new year. You become more ambitious, with a growing awareness of your talents. In doing so, unacceptable conditions are no longer tolerated. Just don’t assume authority on every topic. It’s a sure bet someone with more knowledge will call your bluff. Meanwhile, holiday travel looks likely. Libra 23 September – 22 October Librans still cling to the work ethic while others are setting the scene for fun. After the 17th, allow yourself the same seasonal liberties. Even though you’re coming to the party later than most, you gain in the attraction stakes as Venus puts together a killer new image and attitude. You’re less discriminating than usual. Fewer inhibitions can only mean a lot more fun. Celebrate year’s end as you never have before! Scorpio 23 October – 21 November Everything needs a great finale, including a year like 2019. It’s been a troubling time, but you’re now resolved to grab a better future. Your determination sets off a chain reaction that can’t help but lead to success. There’s every chance that you’ll secure a long-lasting alliance - whether it’s romantic or platonic is up to you. Meanwhile, celebrate the season. This is your reward time, so enjoy a little financial flamboyance or travel.

LOOKING FORWARD

to2020 IN THE HUNTER

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

The end of the year is traditionally a time for reflection on the 12 months that have just passed and the milestones that were notched up along the way. But when the clocks tick over at midnight on January 1, 2020, it won’t just signify the start of a new year, but the dawn of a whole new decade. In the next ten years, the Hunter’s population is predicted to grow significantly as increasing numbers of people relocate to the home of Australia’s largest regional economy, which is valued at more than $40 billion annually. So it seems only fitting that this month, instead of looking back on what has been, we’re looking forward with excitement to what the next 12 months and beyond will bring for the Hunter Region. As the custodians of much of the growth and change that our region will experience, we asked the Mayors of five local councils to nominate some of the projects or initiatives they are most looking forward to in 2020.

Newcastle With an area as diverse as Newcastle to represent, it’s no surprise that Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes’ list of top projects is equally wide-ranging, from pushing the city’s cultural and tourism credentials with a new festival to projects that solve community issues and champion sustainability. 12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Lake Macquarie lifeguards will soon be armed with real-time information

Flagship New Festival Newcastle is renowned as a destination that knows how to put on one heck of a show, with a track record for successfully hosting major events and festivals. Now the city has set its sights on establishing a new flagship cultural event, which is expected to be launched in late 2020. The make-up of the event will be shaped by engagement with residents across the local government area, with visual artists, musicians and performers also being consulted. Cr Nelmes said the festival would mark another milestone in Newcastle’s transformation and demonstrate the City’s commitments to the arts. “Through culture and the creative arts, we tell our city’s story, share our histories and understand our identity,” she said. “A key part of the process is listening to our community to ensure Novocastrians shape how this event looks and feels. “We want a festival that will foster and support our existing grassroots arts and cultural scene while having broad appeal and the ability to attract new audiences.” The festival will cater to all ages and have a mix of events that will be both free of charge and ticketed. Anyone keen to have their say on how the new event will look can take part in an online survey on art and culture, with

Tyrrell St Bridge in Wallsend is about to be replaced

the consultation process closing on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. For more information visit www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/ Have-Your-Say/Projects/Cultural-project-conversation

Replacement of the Tyrrell Street Bridge Wallsend has been one of the hardest-hit areas in Newcastle when it comes to flooding following major rain events. As part of a wider strategy to combat the issue, City of Newcastle will replace the Tyrrell Street Bridge with a higher, longer span that will allow more floodwater to pass through the Hunter Water-owned channel during rain events. ►

Organics Recycling Facility Sustainability is the movement of the moment, and there’s no doubt the City of Newcastle is on a roll in this space, with a raft of environmentally-friendly projects and initiatives. This includes the planned $12.35 million organics recycling facility, which will divert thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill when it is built at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre.

The existing Tyrrell Street road pavements adjacent to the bridge will also be raised to match the higher bridge level as part of the $3.3 million project, which is currently under construction. “I’m particularly looking forward to when we complete the rebuild of Wallsend’s Tyrrell Street Bridge in 2020 because the local community has been one of the hardest hit when it comes to flooding during major storms,” Cr Nelmes said. “Council has committed $3.3 million to make the bridge higher and longer to allow huge volumes of water to flow better through Hunter Water’s Ironbark Creek stormwater channel.

“The opening of an organics recycling facility will be a great milestone for Newcastle as it will close the loop on our city’s organic waste cycle. It will take organic waste and convert it into soil conditioner, compost and mulch to be reused by the local community,” Cr Nelmes said.

“This is a win for the environment and contributes significantly towards our sustainable development goals. “The facility is expected to recycle about 19,000 tonnes of

green-bin waste into 11,000 tonnes of organic product in its first year of operation. "When running at full capacity, the plant will process about 50,000 tonnes of food and garden organics every year. "That will result in 28,000 tonnes annually of soil conditioner, compost and mulch, which we will use across our operations and sell back to the community."

Lake Macquarie Lake Macquarie is well on its way to becoming one of Australia’s most vibrant destinations for business and lifestyle. The city is enjoying a period of record transition, growth and prosperity, with $1.24 billion worth of development approved in the past financial year. There are many exciting projects and developments on the horizon for Lake Macquarie in 2020, with Mayor Kay Fraser’s top picks focussing on the areas of technology, infrastructure and culture.

Smart Beaches Project In 2019, Lake Macquarie City Council joined a world-first beach safety initiative, Smart Beaches, which will introduce sensor arrays and a mix of other smart infrastructure to provide earlier detection of dangerous conditions. The project is being run in partnership with Northern Beaches Council and University of Technology Sydney and will be trialled at two of the LGA’s beaches this summer. “Throughout summer 2020, we will be trialling a range of technology at Redhead and Blacksmiths Beach to provide (Continued next page) ►

Multi-Arts Place (MAP) at Speers Point Park

“Construction works are now well underway and include a new grandstand, amenities, road access, car parking, drainage, a playground and the crown jewel, an IAAF certified Class 2 synthetic athletics track. “The new facility, which is being funded by two State Government grants and council, will enable Maitland to attract regional and state-level athletics meets and has the potential to boost the local economy significantly. “I’m really looking forward to the completion of the facility, which will be yet another regional venue that our community can be immensely proud of.” The $10.5 million Maitland Regional Athletics Centre is Stage Two of the development of the Maitland Regional Sportsground Precinct, which encompasses both the athletics facility and the nearby No. 1 Sportsground. The third stage of the precinct (currently in the design phase) will include more parking, an outdoor fitness station and exercise path, and other upgrades to No. 1 Sportsground including new fencing, lighting, amenities, amphitheatre seating and a new LED scoreboard.

(Continued) real-time and forecasted insights into beach visitation and conditions,” Cr Fraser said. “This project will arm our professional beach lifeguards with real-time information about beach conditions, beach attendance and weather conditions, allowing them to make informed decisions about beach management, patrol hours and staffing. “I’m excited to see this technology in action and look forward to learning how smart technology can enhance the service our professional beach lifeguards provide.”

Munibung Road Extension Next year will also see the completion of roadworks to extend Munibung Road, linking Glendale with Cardiff’s industrial estate. Cr Fraser said the extension of this road is a catalyst for the development of more than 800 new homes and 20 additional hectares of employment-generating land. “The project is located within the North West Catalyst Area, which has been recognised as a significant growth opportunity for Lake Macquarie and the wider Hunter Region,” she said. “Long-term strategic growth cannot be delivered in isolation. Instead, it takes collaboration with all levels of government, the private sector and of course, an agreed community vision to make the potential opportunities for the North-Western part of our city a reality. “All in all, it is very exciting for our city and wonderful to see that we are taking huge steps in delivering on our opportunities for growth. I look forward to watching this project unfold in 2020.”

Multi-Arts Place Late in 2020, construction of a $2 million architect-designed multi-arts space will add further excitement to Speers Point Park, providing the essential infrastructure for various events, from edgy art shows to festivals and family-friendly concerts. 14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent, meanwhile, is looking to the skies for the city’s economic development opportunities.

Known as MAP - Multi-Arts Place Lake Macquarie – Cr Fraser said the new and exciting facility “will become a focal point for arts and culture in the Hunter Region”. Pending approval, construction is expected to be completed in late 2020. “Designed as a platform for creatives, this impressive structure will become a regional destination for outdoor performances such as theatre productions, concerts and opera,” Cr Fraser said. “This venue will assist in driving cultural tourism and the creative economy in the region, attracting thousands of additional visitors to our City.”

Maitland While Lake Macquarie may be banking on the arts to drive new visitors to their city, one of Maitland City Council’s major projects set to be completed in 2020 will look to the sporting sector for its next economic boost.

Maitland Regional Athletics Centre “One of our major projects which will come to fruition in 2020 is the Maitland Regional Athletics Centre,” Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker said.

“Our vision for Cessnock Airport 2020 is for it to be a well-planned and serviced facility that attracts economic development opportunities for the region,” he said. “To unlock business investment growth, significant upgrades to the infrastructure at the airport are required. This would include widening and resealing of taxiways; provision of aprons and aircraft parking areas; improved fuel area access; runway extension and resealing; connection of water and sewerage to the western side of the site; fencing; future hangarage and construction of aircraft storage facilities. “Securing this type of upgrade will position the Cessnock Airport as a significant contributor to the local economy’s sustainability post-mining, in particular as a major tourist and business gateway to the Hunter Valley.” Cessnock City Council currently has a grant application being considered for the NSW Government’s Growing Local Economies fund to assist with the total project, which is estimated to cost more than $7.5 million.

Black Hill Industrial Precinct The establishment of the Black Hill Industrial Precinct is also on the horizon, with the Cessnock Development Control Plan updated to include the Black Hill Employment Area. Cr Pynsent believes the site has huge potential to be transformed into a Hunter freight hub and an industrial precinct, which could be home to up to 1000 jobs. “It is recognised in the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan as a key catalyst area due to the jobs it could create. It will assist in connecting Greater Newcastle and the Hunter region to global markets, providing a significant advantage in attracting large scale industry to the region,” he said. “The Cessnock LGA is open for business, and 2020 will be no exception!” ►

Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary

delivered without increasing rates. The consultation process was overwhelmingly positive, with hundreds of people having their say on the projects they would like to see prioritised. “As a result, our Port Stephens 2020 projects represent an extra $15.9 million of community priority projects to be carried out over the next year in addition to our regular program of works. “This includes $5 million for footpaths and cycleways, $2.4 million for town centre revitalisation and $2 million for roads — works that will have a positive impact on the lives of our community for many years to come.” Cr Palmer said the projects would be funded by optimising investment returns, securing low-interest loans and matching local projects with a broader range of state and federal government grants. Port Stephens

Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary

Fast-tracked community priority projects and a haven for some of the LGA’s most famous “residents” are among the most exciting projects on Mayor Ryan Palmer’s list for next year.

Nestled among eight hectares of stunning bushland and located on the edge of the magnificent One Mile Beach, the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary will provide a unique opportunity to see the beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is a partnership with Port Stephens Koalas and will feature a state-of-the-art Koala Clinic with Intensive Care Unit treatment rooms and holding pens. Visitors will be able to take part in a tailored educational tour, learning about koala care, rehabilitation and the animal’s eventual return back to the wild. An elevated boardwalk will allow visitors to view the resident koalas in their natural habitat, while on the ground,

Port Stephens 2020 projects “There are many great things happening in Port Stephens that our community can look forward to next year, but I’m most excited about our Port Stephens 2020 projects — $15.9 million of community priority projects, which have been fasttracked for next year,” he said. “We asked our community to look forward to 2020 and come up with a shortlist of projects they would like to see

overnight accommodation in the form of ‘glamping tents’ will offer a unique experience for guests. The sanctuary will also include an interpretive walk with art installations and educational activities, providing funbased learning for all ages.

“In early 2020, I’m looking forward to opening Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary — a worldclass facility that will care for sick, injured or orphaned koalas while allowing visitors and locals to get up close and learn more about our unique koala population,” Cr Palmer said.

“We’re fortunate to share our place with one of the few remaining koala populations on Australia’s east coast. Now more than ever, we need to ensure the preservation of koalas for future generations, and this is one important way we can help to achieve that. “Australia boasts a $1 billion koala tourism industry and this facility also poses an exciting and profitable tourist opportunity for council. “Koala Sanctuary is a destination in itself — one that will support Port Stephens’ reputation as one of Australia’s most desirable places to visit. More visitors means more jobs for locals and more money being spent in our region. “Koala Sanctuary is the culmination of many years planning and raising the necessary funds. The sanctuary has been made possible through a partnership with the NSW Government and volunteer group Port Stephens Koalas.” ■

ORICA KOORAGANG ISLAND COMMUNITY UPDATE FERN BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL UNVEILS NEW LEARNING SPACE

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM UPDATE

Fern Bay Public School recently revealed its new learning space designed to integrate STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) into the curriculum. Principal Drew Janetzki said: “We want to provide our students with the skills they need to embrace the jobs of the future. Our school community recognises the need to make STEM fun, interesting, hands on and engaging from an early age. Our new ‘makerspace’ will help foster collaboration, discovery, creativity and innovation.”

Royal Life Saving NSW: The organisation recently delivered first aid training to young mums in the Newcastle region, thanks to a $4,800 grant.

The school used a grant from the Orica Kooragang Island Community Invest Program to help fund the project.

REMEDIATION PROJECT COMPLETE A project to remediate arsenic-contaminated soil and groundwater near the site’s north western boundary has been completed, on time and on budget. The works involved the construction of a 12-metre deep, lowpermeability, below-ground wall to enclose the arsenic contamination. A cap was then constructed above ground to minimise rainwater entering the contained area. Ongoing groundwater monitoring will be utilised to ensure the system is operating effectively. The contamination is the result of an historical manufacturing process in which an arsenic-containing solution was used in the ammonia plant. The practice was ceased in 1994, before Orica took over ownership of the site in 2003.

Stockton Tennis Club: The club used a $6,500 grant to help fund the replacement of an old fence that divides the upper and lower courts.

FRIDAY CHILL Orica is proud to announce that it will continue sponsorship of Soul Café’s Friday Chill in 2020. The weekly events are set to be held in Pacific Park between 6.30pm and 8.30pm from 10 January to 27 March. Soul Café provides hundreds of free meals per week to highly disadvantaged members of our community many of whom are homeless, have a mental illness, substance abuse issue or live in poverty. Friday Chill is the café’s way of thanking the community for its support, activating a public space and raising awareness of the café’s work. The events will feature two hours of music performed by a variety of local artists. BYO blanket, nibbles and drinks.

Returns in 2020

One of the Hunter Valley’s most cherished cultural escapes, The Gum Ball, returns in 2020 for three days of discovery over the school holidays, 24–26th April, in its 15th year of operation. Held at Dashville, an idyllic bushland property at Lower Belford, Hunter Valley, the family-friendly jamboree brings some of the best musical acts from around the globe and showcases them in an intimate setting, alongside stand-up comedy, proskateboarding, markets, workshops, camping and much more. The show is called Harts Plays Hendrix and is performed as a scorching three-piece, giving you the full “Jimi Hendrix Experience”. You’ll believe you’ve been transported to 1969. The Gum Ball 2020 also sees the return of a powerful female trio in Dyson Stringer Cloher, the supergroup consisting of Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher. those songs that have been performed to death and look for those quirky forgotten gems and B-sides to keep you dancing. Fave covers? The After Party Trio – 24 JAN 2020 Kick-off your Australia Day weekend with three guys, great music and good fun! In a nutshell, that is The After Party. These men have one goal, and that is to entertain. The trio bring a list of songs representing everything from Pop, Rock, RnB and even Rap, from the 60’s right through to today. Adamstown

PUDDING! WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

There is no better example of the saying ’many hands make light work’ than the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen, where each year the not-for-profit organisation, located just behind the Adamstown Uniting Church cooks, wraps and sells more than 10,000 Christmas puddings to help a variety of worthy causes. It’s an impressive feat, fueled by lashings of brandy, quality ingredients and a community spirit that has resulted in more than $1 million being donated to worthy projects since its establishment. Apart from a closely guarded recipe, the secret to their success is the host of passionate volunteers who give up their time to help out with everything from cooking and wrapping the puddings to working the shopfront and various stalls where the delicious treats are sold. “We’re making more than 10,000 puddings a year, and they’re all handmade – hand-mixed, boiled in cloth and wrapped up in gift boxes or calico,” Adamstown Pudding Kitchen Sales and Marketing Manager Penny Price said. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation, and we have just three paid staff, including our kitchen supervisor, but there are also approximately 40 passionate volunteers who we just could not manage without”. The tradition was established in 1971 when a church member, grateful for her younger brother’s safe return from the Vietnam war, turned to her grandmother’s family recipe to make puddings for a church fundraiser. Almost 50 years later, charity and community spirit are still the vital ingredients in the operation of the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen, with profits going towards a range of worthy charitable causes within the Hunter and further afield. Of course, its charitable efforts wouldn’t be as successful if it wasn’t for the high quality of its culinary offerings – and these are undoubtedly second to none. Thrilling the taste buds of satisfied customers across the Hunter and throughout

Australia, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen’s core product – the traditional Christmas pudding, is still cooked using the same family recipe for which the exact measurements and method of combining them is a carefully guarded secret. The Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has branched out over the years to create low-fat and gluten-free versions, as well as a new range of gourmet puddings with flavours that include apricot and ginger, date, and double choc cherry – superb when accompanied by the white chocolate and fresh cardamom sauce. “We continue to have our core range of decadent dessert sauces that can be mixed and matched with the puddings as well as a range of gourmet jams, pickles and chutneys that are designed to be seasonal, with ingredients chosen at the markets for whatever is available at the time” said Penny “This year the gourmet range will continue to include the chocolate covered Pudding Bites which are very popular and have also extended the range to include the all-new Pudding Bark which is ruby chocolate mixed with pudding.” “There are three different types of Pudding Bites to choose from – the Traditional Pudding covered in Barry Callebaut ruby chocolate, an Apricot Pudding covered in white chocolate and the Sticky Date Cups consisting of a dark chocolate cup filled with date pudding and butterscotch sauce – all of which are unbelievably delicious.” “Of course, there is no better way to say thank you or wish someone a Merry Christmas than with a delicious selection of Adamstown Pudding Kitchen gourmet products. Choose from ready-made hampers or customise your own from our range of puddings, and gourmet jams, pickles and sauces – the perfect corporate gift or Christmas present.” The Pudding Kitchen is open from July to December, and all puddings are available for purchase at the shopfront located behind the Adamstown Uniting Church. Puddings can also be ordered online at www.adamstownpuddingkitchen.org.au or purchased at select Lifeline stores leading up to Christmas.

joining the line-up, there’s something on offer for all music lovers. If you prefer your events a little more hands-on, the 5K Foam Fest is heading to Hope Estate on Saturday 1st February. This one-of-a-kind fun run includes over 20 obstacles, from mud pits to hurdles to huge inflatable waterslides – and, of course, the foam: 2.5 million cubic feet of it, to be precise. Participants can also contribute to a good cause by creating a fundraising page for their run, with all donations going to Make-A-Wish. Be sure to register online if you’re keen to join in with the foam-filled fun. For those more into food than foam, some of Hope’s most popular lifestyle festivals will be making their return in 2020. The Cheese & Chocolate Festival will be back on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July, delighting cheese fiends and chocolate fanatics alike. With local produce, live entertainment and demonstrations, markets and more, it’s set to be a fun family weekend. The Beer & BBQ Festival also returns a few weeks later on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August. Celebrating the classic pairing of beer and finger-licking BBQ food, this event will feature plenty of food vendors and over 40 craft beers and ciders available for tasting. There’ll also be BBQ competitions and cookoffs, beer masterclasses, market stalls and plenty more. A number of further events appealing to a broad range of tastes are rumoured to be in talks at Hope Estate in 2020, so keep an eye out for announcements in the new year. But in the meantime, you can always turn a visit to Hope’s cellar door and picturesque grounds into an event in itself! You’ll find award-winning craft beer and estate-grown wine ready for tasting seven days a week, plus pizzas, burgers and share plates if you’re feeling peckish. Winery tours, brewery experiences and even grape-stomping activities are also available. Between all that and the line-up of events in store for 2020, it’s set to be another fun-filled year at Hope.

See You Sunday!

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE At Hope Estate 2020 WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

There’s plenty to get excited about as 2019 draws to a close and 2020 quickly approaches – especially when it comes to events at Hope Estate. 2020 is shaping up to be another big year of concerts, festivals and fun times at Hope, with several exciting events already announced and rumours of more in the planning stages. The new year is set to kick off with a bang as the iconic Elton John makes two stops at Hope on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th January, Captain Fantastic is bringing his biggest and brightest show yet to Hunter audiences as he caps off an incredible 50-year career with one final tour. If you haven’t secured your tickets yet, don’t worry: there are some packages still available! But we’d recommend hopping to it – this will be Elton’s last ever stop in the Hunter Valley, so you don’t want to miss out. The following weekend will also be a big one at Hope, with pub-rock legends Cold Chisel taking the stage on Saturday 18th January. The Blood Moon Tour is the band’s first-ever outdoor summer tour, made up of just over a dozen special dates throughout Australia and New Zealand in 2020. Barnesy and co. have only toured four times since the early 80s, so Hunter audiences have a rare and special show in store. And, with support acts Birds of Tokyo and Busby Marou

Rain, hail or shine, there’s one Sunday activity that’s always there for us in Newcastle – Newcastle City Farmers Markets! Admittedly more comfortable on a sunny Sunday, a trip to Newcastle Showgrounds on any given Sunday is still a great way to while away a couple of hours strolling through stalls filled with fresh, seasonal produce for you to nibble on while you wander around or throw together at your next dinner party. Not only will you find the best local produce all in one place at Newcastle City Farmers Markets, but it’s the most sustainable way to support your local producers and get straight to the source with a unique opportunity to interact directly with farmers, producers and artisans. Where else but at ‘The Farmers’ can you buy groceries direct from the farmer – from the person who grew, nurtured and made the product. At the weekly farmers market, you not only get to meet the maker and the farmer, but you can also ask about how and where it’s grown or made, how best to store or use it. In season throughout the summer month’s, you’ll find apples, avocado, blackberries, oranges (Valencia), passion fruit, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries and strawberries to tempt your tastebuds with markets on 1, 8, 15 and 22 December and 12, 19, and 26 January 2020 (22 Dec is the last market for 2019; markets recommence 12 Jan 2020). But it's not just fresh fruit and veggies on offer. Not only can you stock up the pantry with locally sourced fresh produce, but you can also indulge in a delicious market lunch from one of the many food trucks. Taste wines from boutique wineries, gourmet sauces, jams and chutneys, freshly baked organic bread, handmade pasta, organic eggs and beef and of course fresh seafood (an essential ingredient for summer!) For more information about the markets, visit www.newcastlecityfarmersmarket.com.au. See you on Sunday!

Local SCENE

Newcastle Turns Up the Music Over Summer WORDS MELINDA MURRAY The sun is shining and we are all heading out more during the summer months, and Newcastle always has the perfect excuse to do just that. There is a little something for everyone, and these are some of my top picks for the summer. I’ll be home for Christmas at Civic Theatre Newcastle, Dec 21 and 22 – Bringing you a musical with a difference.

24 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Picture it, the year is 1967, it’s the Summer of Love, and the world is changing. Prime Minister Harold Holt’s popularity is dwindling, and he needs to win the nation back! As the annual Prime Minister’s end of year address is approaching, Holt must answer a crucial question, what does Christmas mean to Australia? Through this life-or-death quest for love, the PM must contend with hippies, spies and Jesus People in a festive musical-mystery full of bodacious dancing, hilarious characters and some of the greatest songs of the 1960's! The ultimate Australian Christmas event perfect for the whole family! Elton John at Hope Estate, Jan 12 – More than a concert; an unforgettable memory! Elton John’s three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road global tour has already been hailed as one of his most “energetic, dazzlingly-original and joyful celebrations”. Elton’s legendary catalogue, including beloved songs Bennie and the Jets, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, Crocodile Rock, Philadelphia Freedom and more, are showcased in a musical masterpiece, celebrating his 50-plus year collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin – one of the most enduring songwriting partnerships of all time. “I’m ecstatic and humbled to continue to play for audiences across the globe. I plan to bring to my final tour the passion and creativity that has entertained my fans for decades. It’s the most produced and fantastic show I’ve ever done. I want to go out with a bang…” – Elton John. The Rubens at Shoal Bay Country Club, Jan 24 – The Rubens are back in a big way with the release of their new single and infectious summer jam, Live In Life. To celebrate the release, the band will headline a string of regional summer shows as part of their 'Chucka Buckas' initiative – a brand that The Rubens have established to support new and emerging bands. Stay tuned for announcements on emerging support bands!

The new single blends their signature hooky choruses with a shadowy undertone, Live In Life was co-produced by the band and Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, Mallrat) and recorded in the same WW2 bunker that birthed their third and most recent album, 2018’s LO LA RU. Premiered on triple j Breakfast, the world of ‘Live In Life’ follows a guy over the course of one night as he comes to terms with the gravity of a relationship breakdown. As the sun sets, he’s feeling positive about the next chapter – a feeling that’s quickly trumped by the weight of regret as night falls, by which point the damage is done, and he realises it’s time to move on. A-ha and Rick Astley at Bimbadgen Estate, Feb 29 – The ’80's will be alive and well in the Hunter Valley in February, giving you the chance to make the most of the very last day of summer. Pop icons, A-ha, arrive for their first Australian tour in 34 years and will hit the stage at Bimbadgen on February 29. The Norwegian trio, who dominated pop charts worldwide during the ’80's, are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their hugely influential debut album Hunting High And Low and its timeless classic hit, Take On Me. Joining A-ha to make this one poptastic event not to be missed is another superstar who dominated the ’80's, Rick Astley. With a treasure trove laden with shimmering pop hits, A-ha and Rick Astley are set to thrill fans. The Hunter Valley show will also feature synth-pop stars Pseudo Echo and I Know Leopard.

An Event for

Everyone!

At Hunter Valley Gardens WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Twelve months of planning and preparation. Over 20 carefully designed displays. Three million (yes, million) lights. Those are the kinds of numbers that go into the largest Christmas lights display in the Southern Hemisphere: the annual Christmas Lights Spectacular at Pokolbin’s Hunter Valley Gardens. The Hunter’s favourite celebration of Christmas magic is back this year, bigger, bolder and brighter than ever. Unsurprisingly, organising an event like the Christmas Lights Spectacular isn’t just an end-of-year endeavour – it’s a yearround job. The HVG team is constantly thinking ahead, aiming to refine, improve and expand the experience with each year’s event. “Twelve months out, we look at what we want to do, what we want to change, how we want to evolve it into the following year,” explains Charise Foulstone, Event Manager at Hunter Valley Gardens. “We have a plan, we do a drawing, we send our team out to research options and then come up with the right concept for our event. Generally, by the middle of the year, we have 26 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

a plan in place, and all the ordering will be done, and then October is usually the final time when [the lights] arrive.” Of course, once the lights arrive, there’s the business of actually setting them up – which is no mean feat. (Did we mention this year’s lights tally comes to over three million?) The team begins the lengthy process around three months before the Spectacular opens in November each year. “It’s quite detailed, and there are lots of little components to it,” Charise says. “So the team generally start in August, and then we are still literally putting up lights right till the very end, right up until the moment we open.” While some displays and the general area traversed by visitors remain the same year to year, the event is always evolving. Layouts are changed, and new displays created, so the experience feels fresh for every guest, even those who make a point of return attendance. “Every year we change it so that when you come the next year, you’re not looking at exactly the same setup and exactly the same area where the lights have been,” Charise explains. “Quite a good amount of our time goes into looking at the layout, thinking about how we want to change it for next year, what new and interesting things we think people would like to see.” Several brand-new displays have been created for this year’s Spectacular. For those who fancy a taste of Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere, there’s a new White Christmas scene complete with snow-topped trees, arctic animals and

a snow cave worthy of the North Pole. And couples looking to add a little romance to their evening won’t want to miss the new Lover's Corner experience. Take a starry-eyed stroll through a heart-shaped light tunnel, snap a picture with your significant other, and of course, share a kiss under the mistletoe. Overall, the big focus for this year’s new set-up and displays has been interactivity. The HVG team has designed a more immersive experience than in previous years, pairing the usual sparkling visuals with an even greater sense of all-surrounding magic and wonder. “We’ve got a giant walkthrough snowman, we’ve got a big walk-through Magic Castle, lots of brand-new arches… We’ve really tried to make it a lot more interactive this year,” Charise says. But those who are regular visitors hoping to revisit previous displays shouldn’t worry – all your old favourites will be there, including Candyland, Fairyland, the Princess Castle, Santa’s Workshop and the Twelve Days of Christmas. The lights and displays are the main attraction, of course, but there’s plenty of additional entertainment to enjoy. Classic rides like the ferris wheel and traditional Venetian carousel will delight visitors young and old, while more adventurous thrill-seekers can tackle the swing chair ride or 12-metre-high, 35-metre-long super slide (keep in mind that all rides are user-pay). There are food and beverage stalls galore to sustain you throughout the evening, and carollers, magicians and entertainers are always roaming throughout the Gardens. It’s not hard to see why the Christmas Lights Spectacular is an ideal family event. But it’s not just for parents and kids. Couples can enjoy a date night in the festive spirit, made even more romantic with the addition of Lover's Corner this year. And it’s a great option for groups of friends or colleagues looking to get into the Christmas spirit out in Wine Country. (Be sure to enquire about the discounted group rates available to groups of 10 or more adults.) “Christmas Lights really is the event that’s for everyone,” Charise says. “You’ll get the older people who just love the feel of it, right to the very young who are just wowed by it. We get a lot of inbound visitors over the three months that it’s running, and we also do a lot of group things, like group dinners. There’s a little bit of something for everyone.” The Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular is currently open and runs through to Sunday 26th January 2020. Gates open each day at 5:30pm and close at 10pm. Individual, family and group tickets are available for night entry; combined day + night passes are also available, with accommodation packages on offer for overnight stays.

HIT A

HOME RUN Or Just Have Fun in 2020! WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Did you know that Newcastle has a thriving baseball community? A lot of people might not – it’s quite the hidden gem on the local sporting scene. But across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens, over 65 senior and junior teams are regularly hitting the field in competitions run by the Newcastle Baseball Association. Established way back in 1932, the Association ‘thrives on family and community values’, providing a positive environment for kids and adults alike to learn and enjoy the sport of baseball. From the Mayfield Boomerangs to the Maitland Mavericks, the Belmont Seagulls to the Nelson Bay Strikers, teams are located far and wide, coming together between April and September each year for graded competitions. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays on a home and away basis. Adults can compete in Major League, Double-A, Minor League and Senior Women’s League categories, so there are opportunities for everyone – from professional players with their sights set high, through to those merely seeking a fun way to keep fit in a team environment. The premier senior competition is Major League, played each Sunday and incorporating first and second-grade games. Currently, teams from Belmont, Mayfield, Charlestown, Toronto and Wallsend compete in Major League. With these teams including players from the Australian National team and the Australian Baseball League, as well as former professional and college baseballers, it’s no surprise that a high level of play is sustained in this competition. The Association’s other senior competitions are just as popular, with a grade to suit all skill levels. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth-grade categories

present development opportunities for both male and female emerging players, as well as playing opportunities for those who are just interested in a social team sport. For younger players, the Association offers one of the best junior entry sporting programs in Newcastle. There’s T-Ball for the under8's – an introductory form of baseball, where each batter hits the ball off a ‘tee’ adjusted to their height instead of it being pitched by a player. For kids under ten, there’s a game called Zooka, where the ball is ‘pitched’ from a special pitching machine. These junior entry options are ideal for introducing kids to the sport of baseball, giving them the chance to learn in a non-competitive atmosphere and setting them on a pathway of development towards Little League and beyond. For kids who show a particular interest or talent, parents might consider enrolment in the Association’s Junior Development Program. Open to children aged eight to twelve, the program involves ten weeks of special development for aspiring baseballers, teaching younger athletes how to train effectively and develop their skills. The program has been running for over five years, with many players going on to represent Newcastle and New South Wales in baseball or join the Hunter Academy of Sport. The Association also offers a representative program, providing talented junior athletes with the opportunity to play at a higher level, while continuing to develop their skills with a fully accredited coaching team. Junior representative players have the chance to play at state, national and even world series levels. With so many options available for both junior and senior players, baseball is becoming an increasingly popular choice for families around the region. This is something the Association takes seriously – as their website pledges: ‘All support will be given to ensure a positive experience for the entire family’. Taking a scroll through the team shots on the website and Facebook page, you’ll see some very happy campers – kids and adults alike! The Newcastle Baseball Association’s 2020 competitions commence late March. LIVE YOUR LIST

Being More Human WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON - Live Your Bucket List

Words spoken and written are significant to this Hamilton resident – so, it is no surprise she has published a book. But how the book came about is both intriguing and ironic. Michelle Crawford is a chief conversationalist at her business, Being More Human. She chose these names because she wanted to represent how people change, and conversations are available to everyone. Michelle believes genuine transformation happens through conversation. About ten years ago, she was running a women’s retreat when she woke from a dream, sat bolt upright in bed with the knowledge she would write a book. “Last year in December, I received the published copies of my book. It was amazing, a major milestone in my life and a big relief. It was a similar feeling to having a baby.” Her book, Being More Human: Reaching your human potential through mindset mastery, was born from a conversation. From her business, Michelle had all these ideas, topics and content, so to help her put them in order, she engaged a book coach.

28 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

“I never set out to write about mindset. It was through conversations and interviews with my book coach, the mindset model emerged. It was with no intent; it felt like the book wrote itself.” While talking about her 25 years of running workshops and working with people around the globe, Michelle realised the five-stage mindset model – sufferer, survivor, passenger, driver, thriver. The model provides a pathway for people to understand that they are not alone and learn how to move from one mindset to the next to enhance their life in a range of ways. “I love writing and its cathartic effect to get ideas out of my head and onto paper. Though I found the process for publication challenging and demanding of time.” It took Michelle a year to write and another year to publish her book, which was launched in February. It was

written for women, 35 to 55 years, in the workplace or their own business. However, the reach has been wider appealing to men, school students, mums and CEOs. “The response has been super positive, much more than I ever imagined. I have received comments such as its ‘my new bible’.” From this success, Michelle had decided to write another book. She believes lots of people want to write a book. However, they have just as many excuses why not to. “My advice is to write, don’t get hung up on the content, create a habit of writing. Do a little bit every day, and in time a book will emerge if you let it.” Since 2000, Michelle has journaled daily about her goals, especially her bucket list. “I journal as though it was already happening. I believe in the power of writing, to actualise my goals then see them happen. It is so clear to me that what I write becomes my reality. It is like magic!” She has seen it again and again. In 2009, Michelle wrote a bucket list that included visiting 50 countries, running a half marathon, obtaining her Masters, owning a business and finding a new partner. They are all ticked off. Last month, she wrote her next bucket list that is bolder with no concern about the difficulty. It includes being interviewed by Oprah, speaking on all seven continents, bringing Richard Branson to Newcastle, helping to eradicate mental illness from the planet, and owning multiple businesses across different industries. “For the past three years, I have been working on the Branson visit. There is an upcoming conversation with Virgin United to see if he will be here next year – fingers crossed.” As for the other items on her list, Michelle believes it is only a matter of time before they happen.

These include a larger emerging exhibition space in the main foyer, enabling MAC to showcase local contemporary WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW artists, as well as the introduction of an annual acquisition award and Indigenous contemporary art awards. “We’ll have artists that will celebrate the lake and our environment and what’s unique about Lake Macquarie, and then in alternative years it will be Indigenous awards,” Jacqui says. “A really The gallery closed its doors in April this year to undergo a significant and important direction the gallery is committed seven-month-long, $2.3 million transformation. The Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery has been a cultural fixture in the Lake Mac community since its establishment in 1980. Located right on the shores of the lake, it’s long been renowned for its high-quality programming, showcasing contemporary visual arts, craft and design. For the first time, the venue has the space to present not one, not two, but three simultaneous exhibitions that contrast and complement one another, presenting a portrait of the Lake Macquarie and wider Australian cultural community. us. features contemporary works that examine, interpret and critique a range of social issues, from climate change to education, while we. reflects MAC’s philosophy of celebrating the area’s Indigenous artists and cultural heritage through a range of works by Aboriginal contemporary artists. Finally, be. celebrates MAC’s collection, and acknowledges the generosity of the individuals who have contributed to it through bequests and gifts. “People will be able to see Dobells; they’ll be able to see works that we have in the collection that perhaps we haven’t been able to showcase before in one space,” Jacqui explains. “These are some really significant national artists that have been curated very nicely to celebrate our collections, what makes us a community in Lake Macquarie, and the wider society.” So apart from this opening trio, what’s in store for MAC in future? The 2020 line-up will include more exciting exhibitions of contemporary Aboriginal art; a touring collection from South Australia’s JamFactory featuring artworks and sculptures made from the medium of concrete; works by contemporary Chinese artist Guan Wei; a dance installation; and a ‘real-scale, immersive, house-like environment’, to name just a few. Plus, word has it that it may once again be MAC’s turn to host the Archibald Prize in 2021 – stay tuned for details on that next year. The final word? MAC is more than just a gallery. It’s an important point of connection for the local creative community, and a real destination for both locals and visitors from outside the region. “If you’ve been to the gallery at Lake Mac, think about coming again. MAC really does offer a different experience, and it’s worth coming back,” Jacqui says. “It is your gallery – it’s a space that we really want to be engaged, and a place that you feel proud of, that interests and really excites you. It’s a space for Lake Mac.” Visit MAC yapang at its beautiful lakeside location on First Street, Booragul, and find more information at mac.lakemac. com.au or by calling Visitor Services on 02 4921 0382.

Have You Noticed Your Parents Ageing?

Want to li ve the good life?

WORDS ANGLICAN CARE

The concept ‘circle-of-life’ means that at some stage, many of us will need to assist our parents as they get older. The trouble is, how do you broach the topic without causing fear, offence, or inferring your beloved Mum or Dad are becoming less independent. Potential future health concerns, the challenges of ageing and the prospects of needing extra help are all subjects that nobody wants to face as they move into the twilight years. So, we tend to leave it for another day. The dilemma with holding off is that it is not just one conversation that you’ll need to have. We know from experience the reality is you will likely need to have a series of talks, potentially with various members of the family, before decisions come about. So how do you start the conversation with your Mum or Dad? Our advice is to do your homework before you begin. Start by thinking about what concerns you have and write them down. For example, does their home have many trip hazards? Are they taking their medication regularly? Are they able to get to appointments or pay their bills on time, or at all? Are shopping and cooking becoming more difficult – perhaps you’ve noticed them losing weight or skipping meals? And don’t forget their social needs. Are they involved in their community, do they see friends and family, or are they becoming more isolated as they age? Not forgetting, if they live alone, how would you know if something was wrong? It’s time to do your research, again, before you commence discussions. We recommend you educate yourself on the options available in their local area. When you do this, don’t just consider their health status now, think about what options they may need if their mobility diminishes, affecting their ability to cook, clean, shower even or if their medical needs increase and they need specialist nursing care to come to them. Or if they have been diagnosed with

Dementia or are showing symptoms, what dementia-specific care options are available now and in the future? Consider what role family and friends can have in providing support or if services such as government-funded or privately funded home care are applicable. You may want to visit the government website MyAgedCare.com.au and bring yourself up to speed on eligibility and how to apply for funding – remembering, there are sometimes long waiting periods. While it’s challenging to think about, families should also consider what options they have should a crisis such as a fall or chronic illness arise. Is moving into a nursing home close to family possible or is relocating out of their local area a concern? Once you know about the options available, begin the discussions with your Mum or Dad but don’t rush them. Although you might be ready to make a decision, they may not. Ask how you can help make planning for their future easier. Perhaps you can make phone calls on their behalf, be there if care providers come to the home to discuss options or make appointments and take them to visit potential retirement living villages, aged care providers or nursing homes. This is a process that everyone can get involved in. Wait, there’s more. Don’t forget about the benefits of estate planning, in particular having discussions regarding the appointment of an advocate/s. Your Mum or Dad may want to consider giving someone they trust an Enduring Power of Attorney to act on their behalf if they become unable to manage their property and financial decisions. Additionally, appointing someone they entrust with Enduring Guardianship who is able to make lifestyle, health and medical decisions for them when they are no longer able to do this for themselves due to illness or accident. These can be awkward discussions to have, but your help can make all the difference to your parent’s ongoing quality of life as they age.

Lyndel Henry

WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Lyndel Henry of Henry & Tunks creates special ceramic pieces designed to be used every day. Using high-quality Australian porcelain and experimenting with glazes, styles and colour combinations, Lyndel crafts products ranging from coffee cups and tableware to soap dishes and plant pots. How long have you been creating ceramic products? About 30 years. How did you come to start your business? After I completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design, I spent the next ten years working at UoN. I loved my job but really missed designing and making. After a few years of thinking and dreaming, I decided to revisit my love of ceramics and to start up my studio, and this was when Henry & Tunks was born (2017).

What inspires your work? The concept of emotional durability and encouraging conscious consumption is something I strive for – for someone to still value my work 10, 20 or 30 years after they purchased it. What will people find at your Olive Tree stall? Lots of beautiful items, from the ever-popular ‘small one’, my teenytiny pot which is the perfect trinket holder, through to travel cups and a range of planters in plain glazes or spots. Lauren of Lauren Merrick Illustration will be attending the December 7th market as a special artist. A freelance illustrator from the Blue Mountains, Lauren works with watercolour, gouache, papercut, collage and ink to create art prints, greeting cards and custom illustrations. How long have you been creating art? I've been working as a freelance illustrator since 2012, so seven years! That's

when it became my job, but I have always drawn and painted since I was a kid. How did you come to start your business? I studied a Certificate IV of Design and then an Advanced Diploma of Design and Illustration at TAFE. After I graduated, I launched into my freelance work and started my online shop and selling at markets (The Olive Tree was my first market!). What inspires your work? Nature inspires me constantly, and as humans, our relationship to nature. What will people find at your Olive Tree stall? Art prints, cards and my new 2020 calendar! The final Olive Tree Markets for 2019 will be held at Newcastle’s Civic Park between 9am–3pm on Saturday 7th December and Saturday 21st December.

Giving Back and Living Local at PD Insurance

Pacific International Insurance Company is an Australianowned, Newcastle-based, company that was established over ten years ago to shake up the insurance industry (which it certainly has!). Employing over 100 locals, the company’s success is based on a belief that the best customer service approach is tailored to each individuals needs. It’s their rejection of the “one size fits all” approach that’s winning them plenty of fans both locally, nationally and internationally.

This month we spoke to CEO Roland Lange about Pacific’s national car insurance brand – PD Insurance, doing business locally, the importance of integrity and philanthropy. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. Can you tell us a little about PD Insurance? Progressive Direct, as it was originally known before the transformation to PD Insurance, was a US-owned company. We first got involved in 2017 when the US owners decided to exit Australia, and we ultimately acquired the portfolio in 2018. PD Insurance is a premium brand that caters to discerning, safe drivers. Many people around the country find excellent value in our lower premiums; in particular, motorists who are the exclusive driver of their car. Two mantras are the driving force behind the brand’s DNA: soft landings and simplicity! We strive to provide soft landings – smooth, seamless transitions – for all stakeholders, including our people, our clients, our regulators, our partners and our community. For example, an insurance claim is often preceded by a traumatic event. Our team understands this and aims to provide a “soft landing” for each client by taking great care in every interaction to ensure they feel comfortable and at ease. Our “simplicity” aspiration is reflected in our websites, products and contact centres where we provide clients with the option to communicate via several channels - online, telephone, email, live chat, etc. How clients interact with us is totally up to them, depending on their personal preference. The Soft Landings mantra has been a hallmark of PD’s philanthropic work too – can you tell us how? We have also created the Soft Landings Foundation, Pacific’s charitable foundation. Through this, we formally donate 2.5% of aftertax profit to various charitable causes. This is in addition to our staff involvement with Salvos, Samaritans and Ronald

McDonald House Northern NSW. It might be an obvious question – but why Newcastle? As Australia’s seventh-largest city and the second-largest in NSW, idyllic Newcastle is perfect! Our team benefits from a balanced personal and business lifestyle, with easy access to Sydney and other capital cities. A happy, productive workforce is key to delivering on our value proposition commitments. How is PD Insurance different? Car insurance is relatively homogenous, and there is a lot of choice. In other words, most car insurance policies provide the same basic cover at similar pricing. In addition to value-laden policy features and benefits, PD Insurance is different by being “simply better” at the aspects that really count, for example, service and claims. At the end of the day, what Australians really want is to connect with a company with integrity; that stands for something. Companies that do what they say they will do and support causes that make a difference. Our soft landings mantra and foundation keep us grounded and authentic. Would readers recognise any of your team? One recognisable face is Belinda Smith, our Soft Landings Champion. Belinda is also Chair of Got Your Back Sista and a UoN MBA Advisory Board Member, as well as CEO of another of Pacific’s brands – Rapid Solutions. Rapid provides general liability and professional indemnity insurance to property services professionals and has been a local business for more than 25 years. Tell us about your Newcastle? My wife, teenage daughter and I fell in love with Newcastle when we moved here in 2011. We love the beaches, running trails, bike tracks and wonderful restaurants. Newcastle is home for us!

Re-gift

or Refund? WORDS SALLY DAVIES - Senior Associate, Jenkins Legal Services

This Christmas you will undoubtedly be gifted something that you don’t want. So what can you do? Can you return to the shop at least one of the fourteen pairs of socks that you have received, or are the socks doomed to being re-gifted next year? If you simply change your mind about a purchase or have seen it cheaper elsewhere, a business is not compelled to provide you with a replacement or refund (including an instore credit). That said, many stores have their own returns policies that are more generous and allow for goods to be returned within a certain amount of time, provided that they haven’t been used and that you have proof of purchase. If you wish to return something, it is worthwhile contacting the

store to enquire as to its return policy. In short, if you have just changed your mind about the socks, you will not be automatically entitled to get a refund. If there is a problem with your Christmas socks, however, that is a different story, and the question then becomes: when can you compel a store to provide you with a refund, repair, or replacement? The answer is, it depends whether your problem falls within one of the consumer guarantees outlined in the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). The consumer guarantees in the ACL provide that a product must: • Be of merchantable quality (or in other words, the socks must meet the standard of quality that you would reasonably expect, taking into account their price and description); • Be fit for purpose (including any purpose specified by the shop or the customer); • Match the description made by the salesperson or in the advertising (this includes the description of the socks’ appearance as well as additional promises about performance and quality, including “lifetime guarantees”). If your socks do not meet one or more of the guarantees outlined above, you are protected and entitled to a refund, repair, or replacement (depending on whether the problem is major or minor). That said, the guarantees won’t apply in circumstances such as where you misused the product and caused the problem, or knew of the problem before you bought the product. City to Launch Flagship Cultural Event in 2020 The City of Newcastle has its sights on establishing a cultural festival with nation-wide appeal in 2020 and is looking to the community to help make it uniquely Novocastrian. The flagship event is planned to launch in late 2020 and will be shaped by engagement with residents across the local government area along with visual artists, musicians and performers. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the festival would mark another milestone in Newcastle’s transformation and demonstrate the City’s commitments to the arts. “Through culture and the creative arts, we tell our city’s story, share our histories and understand our identity. A key part of the process is listening to our community to ensure Novocastrians shape how this event looks and feels, ” the Lord Mayor said. “We want a festival that will foster and support our existing grassroots arts and cultural scene while having broad appeal and the ability to attract new audiences.” Early consultation with the arts sector has identified that access to free events hosted at independent spaces as well as our City’s cultural institutions are important elements to consider, as is the need for a diversity of options. People are invited to have their say now to help shape art and culture in our city by completing the survey or voting on the cultural experience wall. Consultation closes 5pm Wednesday 15 January 2020.  For more information, visit the Have Your Say page at www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/ Have-Your-Say/Projects/Cultural-project-conversation

Connection at Christmas WORDS ANNE WARD – Mindinsight

Despite looking forward to the approaching holiday season the lead up to Christmas can be a stressful time of year. Expectations about Christmas can place pressure on individuals and families. It’s easy to make comparisons between our personal situation and the images portrayed on television and social media. So being mindful about this can help make this time more manageable, happy and peaceful. Behind the tradition of gift-giving is the story of a real man, who lived in modern-day Turkey. He became known for his kindness in helping the poor and giving gifts secretly to help people in need. He later became known as St. Nicholas. Even further back is the original Christmas, with the birth of a baby, Jesus, in a stable, in Bethlehem, Israel. In the first Christmas, there was no glitter, and the circumstances of his birth were humble, even by the standards of 2000 years ago. Yet he would have a profound impact on history. One of the messages in these stories is that the impact we have on others defines us far more than possessions or social approval. Social relationships provide a way to give and receive connection and support. Being able to share the reality of our lives helps us to find common ground and reduce stress. However, relationships take work to build and maintain. Dr John Gottman has devoted his career to helping people build healthy relationships. He places particular importance on the way that communication styles shape relationships. He pointed to four negative styles that he called The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, because of how they impact relationships. These are:

criticism, defensiveness, contempt and stonewalling. • Criticism involves raising an issue in a way that focuses on anothers character, inferring some kind of blame or defectiveness, rather than sharing how you feel, what you need, and what you would like to be different. • Defensiveness is a way of trying to avoid issues by trying to shift responsibility or blame onto the other person, rather than listening to them. • Contempt involves putting others down or implying that they are inferior. The antidote to contempt is to express appreciation for each other. This also reduces tension and stress. • Stonewalling involves ignoring or avoiding what the other person is saying. Stonewalling contributes to a sense of isolation and can be avoided by taking time to calm down and come back to the issue later. We all can say things we later regret, particularly when disagreements become heated. Being able to come back and talk calmly can help repair hurt or misunderstanding. Talking reflectively without getting defensive or upset helps to restore connection, respect and trust. Gottman refers to this as building a culture of appreciation. Adversity can place a strain on relationships. My thoughts go out to the communities, families and businesses struggling in the wake of drought and bushfires. Wishing you a safe, peaceful Christmas. What is TruSculpt iD? TruSculpt iD is the third generation in radio frequency (RF) body contouring device from Cutera. It is the first and only RF device with FDA and TGA approval for fat removal. How does TruSculpt iD work? TruSculpt iD works by destroying fat cells with heat. The heat only targets fat cells, thanks to the intelligent design. Using two Megahertz of monopolar radiofrequency, it works on even the most troublesome body fat. What is the secret? It all happens in a process called apoptosis, which means ‘permanently causing fat cells to die.’ Who is a good candidate for TruSculpt iD? Even the most dedicated people can hold onto a bit of excess fat in certain areas of their body – genetics, hormones, age – all factors that can influence where fat is accumulated. If you have been eating clean and exercising consistently but still have problem areas, you should consider TruSculpt iD. The treatment improves your body contours by removing unwanted pockets of fat. It is not, however, a weight loss solution. When do you start to see results? The Truth

About Crowns WORDS ALEX HUSZTI - BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on low-biologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

Many patients approach me for a second opinion regarding a recommendation for a crown. Back in 2006, I made a commitment to myself to endeavour to eliminate conventional crowns from my practice. Why would I do this? Prior to this, I was like most dentists today –

I would recommend conventional crowns regularly. Back in the 1990's, the composite resin restoratives and associated adhesives began to deliver excellent outcomes, and not all of my patients could afford a crown, so I offered, what at the time I thought was the next best thing… a composite resin restoration. Over the coming decades, many of these patients returned to me and I could review my resin restorations. What I found was enlightening. Most of the “next best thing” resin restorations were doing fine. Most of the crowns were also doing fine. However, out of all the failing restorations, both conventional crowns and composite resin restorations, the more conservative composite resin restorations generally had a better prognosis for ongoing restoration. It was this insight that drove my commitment to endeavour to eliminate crowns from my practice and help my patients keep their teeth for life. From this insight, I developed my treatment rationale around composite resin crowns (Belledental CRCs). As an aside, I have failed to completely eliminate conventional crowns from my practice probably because there is still a legitimate, relatively small place for conventional crowns in restorative dentistry. Since 2006, I have focused efforts on the refinement of my Belledental CRCs. You see, a crown is defined as any type of restoration that reconstructs the biting surface of a tooth – no matter what restorative material used. By focusing my efforts on the reconstruction of the biting surfaces of teeth with a wafer of composite resin, I’ve realised many advantages. Firstly, these restorations look like a tooth. Besides the obvious cosmetic benefit, if it looks like a tooth, it works like

a tooth. Form and function are always in close alignment, so if you’re getting the right dental care, it should both work AND look good. Because I restrict the tooth reduction to the biting areas of the tooth (with the exception of decay), all the sound tooth structure on the side of the tooth and around the neck of the tooth near gumline are salvaged. These are important parts of the tooth not to touch, unless you absolutely have to. It ensures that Belledental CRCs are much more conservative for your teeth, providing a stronger foundation for the composite resin wafer that reconstructs the biting surface. Belledental CRCs are repairable. In a world where throwaway has become the norm, the obvious transition from the failure of many conventional crowns is the transition to implants. This is expensive AND invasive. Instead of losing teeth and having to resort to implants, having a repair strategy around Belledental CRCs allows for repeated cycles of repair and remodelling, with only small losses of sound tooth structure associated with each cycle. Education around home care and diet can greatly slow the deterioration of restorations, increasing the duration between repair and remodelling cycles and further prolonging tooth life. In the past, some patients that suffered from erosion and wear on their teeth would wear away the composite resin. I’m pleased to find that there are several manufacturers that are developing composite resin with much better wear resistance while also improving the cosmetics of their products Best of all, Belledental CRCs are completed in one visit and don’t have a lab fee associated with them. They are much more cost-effective than conventional crowns and are often up to half the fee for conventional crowns.

Do You NEED a Crown? Conventional crowns require aggressive cutting away of sound tooth structure – yet their use in dentistry has become more and more common-place. Do you really need to have large amounts of sound tooth structure cut away to provide for a cosmetically pleasing and functional restoration? Have a look at the examples here – tooth conserving restorative dentistry offered by BelleDental. In the top example there has been minimal reduction of sound tooth, while in the bottom 2 examples there has been NO reduction of the tooth. Unlike conventional crowns which are made in a ceramic laboratory, we use composite resin filling materials for these types of restorations – which provide the following advantages: • Zero prep or minimal loss of sound tooth structure • Single appointment treatment • Ability to repair and renew over time with further minimal loss of tooth structure • Often a fraction of the cost of conventional crowns • Can custom match to your tooth colour (for front teeth)

a burden; a burden of past emotional baggage that you just can’t seem to shake.

And So,

Another Year Rolls On… WORDS BRETT CAMERON - Cameron Hypnotics

2019 is nearly gone and another decade awaits. This is the time of year when most of us take stock, reflect, rejuvenate, and in most cases collapse with exhaustion, knowing that somehow you have survived another year. For a lot of us, this is also a time to give thought to how the next year can be different. By different, I mean to make some life and work changes. “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that we used when we created them.” ~ Albert Einstein Are you exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally? Life can be stressful as we juggle family (both immediate and extended), work, school, social, work (yes more work), life, relationships, and for some people, weighed down with

• What have you achieved this year? • What was on your “to-do” list, and is still there? • Has your past year been in balance? Life, family, work, fun? • Knowing what you know now, take your mind back to January 2019 and give yourself some new advice. What would you say to you? So where to from here? Looking forward to 2020, what will be different for you? What goals do you have? Are you moving towards the new decade with a plan or running away from the last one, clinging onto nothing but hope? A goal without a plan is just a wish! At the start of every year, I give my clients a simple onepage planning sheet (The Key Areas of Life). It allows us to break life into six different areas and asks you to set an individual goal for each of those areas. The areas of focus are: • Finance and Money • Health • Education • Career • Personal Development • Family and Relationships Your task is to create a goal based on the SMART principle for each of those areas, and then give yourself a percentage chance of achieving that goal. For example, if your goal is to “save $10,000 by December 2020” and that goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. However, if you believe there is only a 90 per cent chance of being ticked off, then I have to help you to find the missing 10 per cent. The missing component could be self-doubt, a limiting belief or maybe the goal is unrealistic. In any field of endeavour, those who succeed are usually those who are goal-oriented. They have a vision, a purpose, a goal and a plan. Go to the Cameron Hypnotics weblink below, click on the Life Coaching page and then the Key Areas of Life link, you can download your own copy to start the 2020 planning process. Making a Year-Long Plan

FOR SKIN HEALTH WORDS DR KATHRYN HOLMES - The Mayah Clinic

We are really entering the silly season now, with so many parties and events from November into the new year. For some people, it is only now that they start to look at their skin and general 'photo-readiness'. (Social media, of course, pushes this, as well as creating much anxiety around appearance – even to the extent of diagnosable mental health conditions – but that’s a whole other topic!) Statistics show that the number of visits to clinics for all manner of “beauty” treatments, including anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers rises hugely in these eight weeks of the year. This makes sense, but can also be very risky. In this rapidly expanding world of cosmetic medicine and beauty, there has developed a confusion between what things are beauty treatments and what are medical treatments. Australia’s regulatory processes have not kept up with the development of new centres and people offering these procedures. Add to this the push of the insta “influencer”, and it’s a recipe for disaster. Insta-Influencers are often recommending treatments that carry real risks, without clearly mentioning this, OR be recommending injectors who may not be qualified or professionals. Put all this together, mix it up, and the result is more than a 200% increase in complaints about cosmetic treatments

to NSW Fair Trading in recent years. The most common complaint was dissatisfaction with the quality of the service performed. Dr Ron Feiner, the Medical Dean of the ACCS (Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery), says “there is a major misconception in Australia and around the world that anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are beauty treatments, in the same category as facials. There has been a surge of people offering these services in casual settings like shopping malls, at hairdressers, and even ‘tox’ parties, which adds to the normalisation of procedures and puts patients at real risk of botched procedures”. We are seeing more and more adverse events reported worldwide, including ulceration, infections, tissue death, migration of fillers and even blindness. Often, poorly trained injectors are not even aware of the risks posed by the treatments they are performing, so would have no chance of being prepared to deal with any of the possible complications or know how to inject in a way that minimises risk. Of course, complication rates are higher with poorly trained or 'occasional' injectors whose experience and skills can’t be equal to those of a full-time professional injector. Would you hire someone to build your house, who just does a bit of hammering one day a week, but is really trained as a mechanic? In Australia, at the moment there is nothing to stop someone having only a 1–2 day course before injecting clients. They might be very cheap, but is the risk worth it? Taking on these injectable treatments should only be done after proper consultation. This consultation should include discussion of the desired outcome, understanding any risks and side effects, and consideration of other options. For example, we now have super-concentrated PRP systems (you know, take your blood, spin it and re-inject it – and NO all systems for doing this are NOT the same and won’t produce the same results,) with none of the risks of other injectables that can provide volume restoration and rejuvenation. The very best idea is to make your skincare an all year story. Make a plan for achieving the best healthy skin you can with a regular program customised for you. Maybe that can be a New Years resolution! Merry Christmas! Dr Holmes is the founder of the Mayah Clinic at Lakelands and a Fellow of the Cosmetic Physician College of Australasia and a Founding Fellow of the Australasian College of Aesthetic Medicine.

FESTIVE SEASON FITNESS

For Mind & Body

WORDS JAMIE-LEE DONOHOE – General Manager Planet Fitness Lambton

The festive season is almost upon us. Time for your work Christmas party and to celebrate with friends and loved ones alike. If you are like most of the population, we do tend to overindulge on food, not to mention those ‘liquid’ calories! This is also the time of the year we start to make our new year’s resolutions - what we are going to do, when we are going to do it, and how. We plan, then think, and then we can over-think it, and then we stress out about it all when we have loads of yummy food and drinks around – not the ideal time if you are an emotional eater. Self-care and acknowledgement will help you navigate your way through what can be a minefield of temptation, both good and a little naughty. Why not try these 10 steps to help you through the Christmas season along with a cheeky little workout you can do every other day. 1. Be prepared or prepare to fail (this is a quote I love!) Be organised to help reduce the already stressful time of year. Meal prep, or just have healthy snacks on you, so you do not eat the wrong option because it was convenient – remove the temptation. 2. Be positive and enjoy life and the moment with family and friends. Involve family and friends in what you are doing, they could have the same goals as you, and now you have a training buddy; you can help keep each other accountable. 3. Look at the smaller things in life – smell the flowers or take a moment to enjoy our

Thinking of Renovating? beautiful coastline of Newcastle. The ANZAC walk is a beautiful area to enjoy. 4. Tell your friends and family you love them and are grateful to have them in your life. Be mindful and enjoy your loved ones. 5. Don’t sweat the big things you cannot control; life is too short not to enjoy what you have. We cannot control everything, and life gets a lot easier if you understand this and move forward with your journey. 6. Take time for yourself; even if it is only 10 mins, it is still your special moment. Just breath, exhale the negative and inhale the positive. 7. Keep it real with your goals to give you purpose. What works for someone else, may not work for you, so take the time to figure out what it is that works to save time. 8. Don’t set yourself up to fail; you're worth more than that! Time is precious, and you want to make every minute count. 9. Try and do something active each day for your mind, body and soul. It will keep your head clear, and keep you motivated toward your goal. 10. Appreciate where your journey has taken you and what you have gone through to get here. Acknowledge your mistakes, but most importantly, celebrate your successes.

The Perfect Gift for DayTrippers! With last month's publication of Three Hours From…, Lonely Planet presents the best day and weekend trips within three hours of 60 of the world’s favourite cities, from Amsterdam and Běijīng to Marrakesh and Rio de Janeiro. Australia is represented by short escapes from Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, as well as the breakout lists Australia’s Best Food & Drink Escapes and Oceania’s most Fascinating Indigenous Experiences. Our very own Hunter Valley wine-country also gets a nod in the Sydney section. With sights, activities and hidden gems – all built around themes like Art and Culture, the Outdoors and Food and Drink – Three Hours From… has amazing ideas for city escapes and long stopovers, as well as new experiences to discover in one's own backyard. "In this book, we hope to inspire you to look beyond the city limits for your next adventure," Lonely Planet says. "Whether you’re in Delhi, Vancouver, Brisbane or Rome and whether you live there, work there, are on vacation or are simply passing through with a day to kill, we encourage you to widen your net. "Just an hour and 40 minutes

from Cape Town you can spy breaching whales from the cliff path at Hermanus; within two hours of Manhattan you can be surfing at Rockaway Beach; and if you find yourself in Běijīng with time on your hands, you can choose between rafting a scenic gorge, visiting Jin era temples, or hiking along the Great Wall – all are within three hours of the city." "Each of the 60 global cities in this book is presented with a map of the surrounding area, pinpointed with up to 18 of the most exciting, in-the-know things to do within three hours," Lonely Planet continues. "These pinpoints are colour-coded by theme so you can easily find what you’re interested in, be that outdoor pursuits, arts and culture, history, festivals and events, film and music, or food and drink. The corresponding entries are ordered by the time it takes to get there from the city centre, so whether you’ve got just a couple of hours or a whole weekend, you can find an adventure, if not on your doorstep, then three hours from it." You’ll find Three Hours From… in all good book stores or for more information visit www.lonelyplanet.com

STEP BY STEP SERVICE At Choice Tiles If you’ve never built or renovated before, you might assume that selecting tiles is one of the easiest parts of the process. Surely it’s just a matter of choosing the ones you think look best, and then it’s job done – right? Well, not entirely. As many first-time renovators soon learn, there are more varieties of tile than you ever imagined, and the right kind can really make or break the look and feel of your bathroom, kitchen or living room reno. That’s why it’s always a good idea to call in the experts – and if anyone knows the ins and outs of selecting, supplying and installing tiles, it’s the team at Choice Tiles. Rodney Haworth founded Choice Tiles in 2006. With more than 30 years of tiling experience behind him, it’s no surprise that Rodney and his team have built up a thriving local business over the ensuing 13 years. And after so long serving customers around Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast and Great Lakes regions, they’re more passionate than ever about what they do. This year has marked a big move for the Choice Tiles team: from their previous

As you enter the newly refurbished showroom, you’ll find a tight-knit group of welcoming, enthusiastic employees, ready to talk you through the process of creating your ideal bathroom or other renovation project. No matter what stage you’re at in your renovation process – whether you’re just starting out with only a vague idea, or you have a completed set of plans – the Choice team can help out. In a walk-in consultation or pre-arranged appointment, clients can submit their bathroom plans, and the team will provide competitive estimations of product costs alone, or a quote incorporating supply and installation. Bathroom packages are also on offer for those who’d prefer to have everything provided for them. “Our team can help clients step by step through the process of their new renovation,” explains Riley Davidson, Assistant Showroom Manager at Choice. “We help our clients with finding inspiration, ideas and their style.” The team specialises in supplying and installing ceramic, porcelain and natural stone tiles. popular options, providing a classic look for any space, but if you’re looking for something a little more unique, natural stone is an elegant alternative. Largeformat tiles provide a particularly smooth and striking effect, while modern mosaic and feature tiles can add interest, and vinyl and vinyl hybrid flooring options are increasingly on-trend. With a multitude of colours and designs available – from bold, eye-catching patterns, to the most subtle shades and textures – there’s something to suit every vision and project. No matter what style of tile you choose, trusted brands like Johnson Tiles, Everstone, Marble Plus and RAK Ceramics provide reassurance that you’re getting the best-quality products for your money. Once you’ve selected your perfect tile, it’s time to think about how to implement it in your home. Tile adhesives and all the other tiling products you’ll need to do it yourself are available through Choice, as well as plumbing products to finish the job. But if you’re not the DIY type, Choice offers installation services including full floor and wall tiling, waterproofing, porcelain sealing, epoxy grouting, underfloor heating installation for both tiles and carpets, and installation of soundproofing and acoustic underlay. You know what they say – when in doubt, leave it to the experts. Despite the name, it’s not just tiles you’ll find when you check out the new Choice Tiles location. Vanities (standard and custom-made), baths, toilet suites, the latest ranges of tapware and bathroom accessories – Choice has everything you’ll need to create your dream bathroom or add just the right touch to a kitchen or living area in your home. Specialists on hand at the refurbished showroom include an architectural consultant, a colour consultant, and a qualified interior designer with over 20 years of experience with tile selections. “It’s a perfect one-stop-shop for architects, builders, designers and their 44 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

clients,” Riley says of the new showroom. “And with the addition of a trade centre, it’s perfect for the handyman as well.” In addition to working with domestic clients, Choice has been involved in a number of larger-scale commercial projects, including the award-winning Maitland Riverlink – a gateway building designed to connect High Street and The Levee with the banks of the Hunter River. Other notable renovation projects the Choice team has lent its expertise to include Newcastle RAAF Base, Newcastle Airport, and the Newcastle Council Building; Spicers Guesthouse in Pokolbin; Regis Aged Care Facility at Elermore Vale; and the multi-million-dollar Shortland Waters Golf Club development. Between these commercial projects and their local domestic customers, it’s safe to say the team is always pretty busy. But what’s coming up for Choice Tiles in the future? Now their new Cardiff location is up and running; they’ll also be expanding their services to include start-to-finish renovations. “The new year brings Choice Tiles’ very own bathroom renovations, with the supply of everything needed for your very own personalised bathroom,” Riley says. “Everything from colour selections to tilers – we have you covered.” So if you’ve been thinking about that bathroom reno, there’s never been a better time to take the leap. COVER UP

This Summer! WORDS LARA O’DONNELL - Tailored HQ

Window coverings are an essential design element to be considered as a part of an overall interior design scheme but are often overlooked until the end of a job. This can limit your options, especially in a new build, and you may miss out on achieving the ideal solution. For example, curtain tracks and roller blinds can be hidden in bulkheads, or curtains can seem to disappear into a cavity, or they can be motorised and wired in before walls go up. These little tweaks at the construction stage can have a significant impact on the finished product both visually and for you, the end-user. Consider the overall aesthetic and how they will feature in the space. Will they be a highlight and stand out, or will they blend in? What are you trying to achieve with them – softening of the room, day privacy, night privacy, insulation, sun protection, complete light block out, or a combination? To find the best solutions, the functionality of not only the products but also the window or door opening must be taken

into account. The combination of the right products can help achieve all of the above requirements. If you have wall to wall glass windows or doors and are wanting curtains, consider where the stack will be when the curtains are open. If a track is the width of the opening, the stack of a curtain will be covering a portion of the glass, reducing your view and the light that can get in, effectively making the space within feel smaller. Here at Tailored HQ, we take curtain tracks past window or door openings where possible to get the stack off the glass and utilise the light to its fullest potential by making the opening feel larger. Also,

in these cases, consider the view from the outside in. The colour showing to the outside can change the aesthetic of the façade of a property or look messy from a balcony, so don’t forget the exterior aspect when selecting colours in the interior. Have a corner or angle to work with? Not a problem! The bending or curving of curtain tracks is an easy solution, allowing a free flow of the curtain in the space – we also utilise the bent tracks in situations where the glass is wall to wall. The tracks are bent around the corner back into the room, allowing the stack to be over walls instead of the glass, clearing the view. Most people are none the wiser of the use of this visual trick. Roller blinds can also be used in corners or angled windows. There are angled brackets that are used and can also allow the blinds to move up and down on one chain, so you do not have to reach over things to get to the chains. Up to three blinds can be ‘linked’ on the one control with these brackets. One thing to remember with blinds is that there is always a gap between each blind to allow for the brackets above. Fabric selection (the fun bit!) should be both an aesthetic and practical decision. Being located near the ocean in Newcastle, means there is salt in the air which can deteriorate natural fibre fabrics faster. An element of polyester in the mix will help stabilise natural fibres (such as linen), and this generally allows the product to be washed and stand up to direct sunlight better than a product which has 100% natural fibre content. Fabric selection, whether for blinds or curtains, is where you can help keep the finished product within your budget. With such a wide range of products available at a multitude of price points, there is an option for everyone.

On the

Right Track WORDS CHLOE O'SULLIVAN

I know people get annoyed when Christmas decorations come out earlier and earlier every year. I have seen full-fledged arguments online about the acceptable date for Christmas tree erection (and yes that is how they referred to it). Not me though, put your tree up in September, leave your Christmas lights up all year long, do what makes you happy. There is never really a bad time to hear Michael Bublé sing Let it Snow, while you’re are escaping the 40-degree heat by standing in the Coles frozen foods section. I must admit, I’m more cheerful about Christmas than most mum’s because years ago our family discovered the secret to making it stress-free. I still buy presents for the kid. She is the only one under 18 in our family and let’s face it; she has put up with me all year and deserves a treat. The rest of the family made an agreement the year I turned 25 (I can even tell you the exact date – Boxing Day 2004). We were sitting at my grandma’s house knee-deep in wrapping paper as we watched the death toll rise as the news reports came through on the Tsunami in Indonesia. Without a word, we got out our credit card, dialled the donation hotline and passed the phone around the lounge room. With that in mind and my grandma’s strict instructions not to buy her anything she has to dust, the hardest thing about Christmas shopping is finding a new charity. We have some regular favourites. Oxfam cards that pay for a goat or give start-up money to women to start a business in a developing country. The Rural Fire Service and Barnardos. One of my favourites was buying my mum a subscription to The Stick – a magazine put 50 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

together by the amazing Samuel Johnson who runs, Love Your Sister. It gathered together some of the best writers in the country. You can still buy the back issues online, and they are well worth a read. While your there, grab a copy of Samuel’s books Dear Dad and Dear Santa. The year of the 2016 election in the US. I made my own Christmas Cards with Vistaprint, and for every card I sent out, I donated to Planned Parenthood. I want to get the kid started early, so although she still gets gifts, it’s important to me that she understands that the best part of Christmas (hell the best part of life), is what you can do for other people. We made our own advent calendar several years ago. There is an envelope for each day with a chocolate in it, but there is also a note about something nice she has to do for someone else that day. We have donated toys, clothes, filled a bag for a woman in need for the In The Bag collection. As a society, we tend to measure success in goals and money. On where we live or what school we went to. I will measure my success as a parent by the kindness and empathy expressed by my child. I'll ensure she is aware that it was just dumb luck that we were born in a country that is not constantly under the threat of civil war, where there is plenty of food and where she is free to get an education. I want her to know that how much I love her isn’t shown by the price tag on the toys I buy her. I want her to make decisions based on ethics and morals, not on the need to have more than the guy next door. I tucked her into bed last night and found this drawing (above) as I was cleaning up. I think we are on the right path.

WORDS MIA KYRIKOS

Whether it be a tantrum over a favourite shirt in the wash, sibling bickering, or just general panic; one thing is for sure – school holidays aren’t for the meek and mild. For the most part, this can be less a time of merry cheer, and more a time of dread and fear. But rather than scratching off the days on the calendar like a hardened crim crossing off the days on their cell wall, take heart – we have you covered! We have collated all of the must-see and do activities for these school holidays. And with a mixture of free and paid events for kids of all ages, you can be sure to get through this period unscathed. Closer to Home
