From the Editors... Every year we wait with anticipation for the Newcastle Writers Festival and this year is no exception. There’s even more excitement building this year with the long-anticipated appearance of international master of suspense - Michael Robotham. There’s no doubt there are millions of people around the world who appreciate Robotham’s work. He has garnered a dedicated following of readers, many of whom will no doubt be rejoicing this month when the Sydney-based author finally makes the trip north. The festival runs from April 5–7 with a packed program of more than 90 free and ticketed events across various locations, including book launches, discussions, workshops and panels (see our What's On Guide for details). Robotham was forced to cancel his promised appearance last year due to a medical emergency and, like all good plot twists, the reasons for Robotham’s late-in-the-day omission left us all hanging. He sets the story straight in this issue with an important health message for all of us to take to heart. To help you focus on your own health and wellbeing, this month we’ve put together a 14-page special feature aimed at giving you a new lease on your own life. With tips on everything from restoring damaged skin to beating the blues and increasing self-confidence – there are loads of simple health-hacks that we can all incorporate into our own lives. Bibina give us no excuses as to why we shouldn’t swap to a gluten-free diet, and if you’re hearing has troubled you, but you think aids are not for you, take another look with the introduction of a new aid that can translate 27 languages and monitor your health (be gone fit-bit!). If the impending school holidays are affecting your mental wellbeing (didn’t we just have school holidays?) – then we’ve got you covered there as well, with over 60 amazing activities for the kiddies to immerse themselves in while you immerse yourself in your café latte and this issue of intouch Magazine. Enjoy! Stay intouch at getintouch@intouchmagazine.com.au

Rick Price - The Rarities At Lizotte's, Saturday 25 May

Rick Price’s chart-topping album Heaven Knows was released through Sony Music in July 1992, and due to the albums massive success, Sony/Columbia Records re-released the album with a special limited edition bonus disc, Rarities, in 1993. Rarities, an acoustic CD, with tracks including, Listen To Your Heart, If You Were My Baby, Wishin, We've Got Each Other, Not A Day Goes By, Where Are You Now and Peter Allen’s global hit Tenterfield Saddler. This took the album back into the charts. Now, Rick returns to his homeland in May 2019, to tour Rarities, live and acoustic, where he will perform tracks from this CD along with the classics and some special tracks never played before on stage. Last year was a massive year for Rick, selling out shows on his Heaven Know’s tour at the tail end of 2018 and balancing his touring schedule with his other love – producing music. A number of exciting projects last year included working with Australia’s pop darling Samantha Jade on The Magic Of Christmas album, the title track and stunning duet with Guy Sebastian, written by Rick. Another highlight for the year was working with American musician and occasional actor Chris Isaak alongside Jess & Matt on the re-make of Simon & Garfunkel's’ The Sound Of Silence. This track making the track listing on Jess & Matts’ debut album Songs from the Village, produced by Rick and released through Sony Music.

with a minimum of three plans of action and you should see results leading into the summer months. Geminis are the alchemists of the zodiac, after all. So why not apply this magic to your love life as well. Conjure up some romance!

Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars for April.

STAR OF THE MONTH Aries 21 March – 20 April This year promises pleasure and prosperity. We find Mercury organising your agenda, making life easier by encouraging changes of direction. And if you have doubts over which path to choose, Jupiter helps set you on the right track. There are bound to be moments of trepidation, but this year’s focus is on pushing your limits. You’ve been stuck in a rut for too long now. Cosmic help is on its way, along with extra cash. One warning: be careful who you trust. Be confident you can go it alone. When opportunity knocks, lay out a welcome mat. A super-charged cosmos ensures you're in the right place at the right time, making the right decisions – ditto for romance.

Taurus 21 April – 20 May This month, self-reliance becomes your keyword – particularly in financial matters. Expect changes in joint finances, so don’t become too dependent on another’s resources. And despite the occasional temptation to take a risk, cover your bets and don’t borrow if you can’t afford the repayments. Romance also needs to offer more excitement. A sexier new you emerges. The prospects of finding long term commitment and happiness are high. Gemini 21 May – 21 June Lifelong long goals come closer to reality, as Mercury nudges forward in your sector of hopes and wishes. You just need to introduce focus. Use April to draw up a list of items you want to achieve. Follow up

Cancer 22 June – 22 July Why can’t everyone be as forgiving as you? Perhaps world peace wouldn’t be as elusive. But there are now some matters to attend to in your own backyard. If relationships feel shaky, Saturn draws you to firmer ground. Still, not everything stays steady, especially finances. If you’re well funded, you’re on the way to success. But if there’s risk involved, make sure you can afford the gamble. Leo 23 July – 22 August Saturn graces your career sector for some time to come, encouraging you to streamline your responsibilities. In the past, you’ve been far too accepting of your overwhelming workload; in the meanwhile – missing out on too many of life’s pleasures. If it’s more play you’re after, Venus and Mercury encourage romance, while Jupiter offers self-indulgence. Or perhaps it’s time for pampering and romance. You choose. Virgo 23 August – 22 September This month’s cosmic activity rocks your world. Most importantly, a forward moving Mercury dramatically revamps your romantic life. If you’ve been muddling through a tiresome tryst that no longer feeds mind, body or spirit - it’s possibly time to make a clean break. The new moon on the 5th draws new friends into your social sphere. Sexual energy fuels passion and spontaneity. Work also keeps you busy, but rest if you’re tired. Libra 23 September – 22 October With April’s full moon in your own sign on the 19th, life could easily become a stress-fest. Your best antidote for full-moon burnout is to stay within your comfort zones. Avoid harsh work deadlines and do what you love instead. Perhaps, love simply happens. You’re drawn to newcomers with something different about the way you relate. Couples could rekindle passions. This month also offers a possible change of address. Scorpio 23 October – 21 November Jupiter continues to give you the go-ahead for practically anything. Money pressures are off, so there’s more cash to play with. You’ll be drawn to adventure and relationships that develop a crazy rhythm and spontaneity. Stability may be compromised, but with delightful results. Love tangles aside, there’s new openness with friends and family too. It’s a welcome turning point.

Sagittarius November 22 – December 21 Mix a little determination with a lot of ambition, and you’ll get a recipe for success. Saturn, the planet of hard work and transformation, occupies your money sector for some time to come – which allows empowering changes to occur in your career and personal life. It’s time to discard emotional or professional deadwood. At times this may be easier said than done, but truth be told - you can’t go back now, and why would you? Look to the future. Capricorn December 22 – January 19 April comes drenched in opportunity and optimism. Even so, associates may put you to the test. Not to worry – you’ll handle any challenge with confidence. Just remember to take on only as much as you can handle, as your main concern is about making the right choices. Socially, you’re vivacious, and your popularity goes a long way towards advancing your professional and romantic ambitions. Aquarius 20 January – 18 February Time and distance are valuable when you want to put something behind you. But occasionally you run headlong into the past. Just accept the situation and work towards closure. This month, it seems as though everything needs fixing - from your bank balance to your love life. Take heart in the knowledge that all will eventually fall into place - and you won’t have to do it alone; friends offer a helping hand. Pisces 19 February – 20 March This month’s full moon on the 19th has plenty of sway, meaning you’re likely to act without considering the consequences. If you suddenly start to recklessly spend money or fantasise about an off-limits new flame, blame it on lunar effects. Just don’t become too moonstruck. This phase is fleeting. When it’s passed – you may have regrettably burned a bridge or two. Professionally, you feel more in control.

Musica Viva Presents

ZOFOMOMA Since joining forces as a professional duo in 2009, internationally acclaimed solo pianists Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi – ZOFO – have electrified audiences from Carnegie Hall to Tokyo, Japan with their dazzling artistry and outside-the-box thematic programming for piano-four-hands. Touring Australia for the first time with Musica Viva, they visit the Newcastle Conservatorium on May 16 with ZOFOMOMA, a stunning

multimedia project that combines new music and art from around the world. This Grammy-nominated, prize-winning Steinway Artist Ensemble – one of only a handful of duos worldwide devoted exclusively to piano duets – is blazing a bold new path for piano-four-hands groups by focusing on 20th and 21stcentury repertoire and by commissioning new works from noted composers each year. ZOFO, which is shorthand for 20-finger orchestra (ZO=20 and FO=finger orchestra) explores the realms in which many composers first experienced their symphonic visions. The duo believes that the piano duet is the most intimate form of chamber music, with two musicians playing individual

parts on one instrument in a complex, often beautiful choreography of four hands. The ZOFOMOMA Live Concert Experience unfolds as an aurally and visually stunning walking tour through a virtual museum of modern art. Against an ever-changing backdrop of contemporary paintings, 15 new ZOFO-commissioned duet compositions are revealed throughout the 75-minute continuous performance. And in a nod to Mussorgsky, this 21st-century ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ leads viewers from one gallery to the next accompanied by a new Promenade Theme arranged by ZOFO's Keisuke Nakagoshi. For this cutting-edge project, ZOFO solicited new works from top composers around the globe and asked each to select a painting representative of his or her culture as a springboard to the creative process. The result is a rich tapestry of sights and sounds reflecting the cultural, musical and artistic diversity of our world community. Experience ZOFO live at the Newcastle Conservatorium on Thursday 16 May at 7:30pm. For bookings and further details, visit www.musicaviva.com.au/zofo. MICHAEL

ROBOTHAM The Master of Suspense WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

Fans of Michael Robotham’s award-winning crime novels know that the real thrill of the story comes from the suspense. But while they expect plenty of intrigue between the pages of his books, they never suspected the internationally best-selling author would leave them hanging in real life as well. Twelve months ago Hunter readers were eagerly looking forward to a visit from their favourite crime writer but had to put their anticipation on ice when Robotham was taken off the bill for the 2018 Newcastle Writers Festival at the last minute. Like all good plot twists, the reasons for the change were not clearly explained at the time, only coming out more than a month later when the Australian Book Industry Awards were announced. When media reports of the award winners were published, they revealed that Robotham was celebrating a victory on two fronts. Not only had he finally scooped General Fiction Book of the Year for his novel The Secrets She Keeps (he had been shortlisted five times before), but it was also five weeks to the day since he had gone under the knife for a life-saving quadruple heart bypass. The emergency surgery on March 29 had been kept very much on the quiet – even his mother didn’t know until she read the reports in the newspaper – hence the mystery surrounding his non-appearance in Newcastle. “[The awards were] the first time I publicly announced the fact that I had heart surgery. I didn't document the fact that I was going in to have a quadruple heart bypass or anything like that, I'd kept it all very quiet, even my own mother didn't know until she read the story in the paper the next day,” Robotham said. “[The month before the awards when I was still recovering from the surgery] I was supposed to be at the Newcastle Writers Festival … [it was the] first festival appearance I've ever cancelled in my entire career. “When I've committed to going to things I've always made it. I remember when I sent (organiser) Rosemary (Milsom) a message saying I can't make it, and I told her ‘Between you and me, I’m going in for heart bypass surgery’ she, of course, was saying, ‘Oh my God that's far more important, forget about the festival, you just get healthy’. “But I kept saying, ‘No, no, I promise I'll come back next year, I promise’.” Robotham’s run-in with heart disease came as a complete surprise to the seemingly healthy 57-year-old, who had gone to his GP for his annual health check only to find out a week later that he was lucky even to be alive. ► 12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

A barrage of tests including an angiogram revealed the extent of the problem – one artery was completely blocked, another was 98 per cent blocked and a third was 46 per cent blocked. Robotham’s surgeon was shocked that he hadn’t already had a heart attack and said that if he had, the damage to his arteries meant that he would not have survived. It was such a surprising turn of events that even the master of unexpected plot twists himself never saw it coming. “It’s so ridiculous because I had no symptoms, I mean I kept questioning them all the time, saying are you sure I need this surgery because I did not feel anything was wrong,” Robotham said. “You end up having two reactions. One is when you see some morbidly obese, chain-smoking sort of KFC-eating person you think ‘Why aren't they the ones that had to go through this?’ And another part of you just thinks – because they (the doctors) said I wouldn’t have survived the heart attack when it came, it was coming soon and I would have died on the spot. So in that sense, you just keep saying that you’re so fortunate, and you embrace life because it could have all ended very, very quickly.” What Robotham also wished he could have embraced more at the time was his long-awaited victory at the Australian Book Industry Awards. Coming just five weeks after his surgery, Robotham wasn’t even supposed to attend the awards night due to the risk of infection during his recovery period. He was also trying to cope with the post-operative depression that is common after open-heart surgery. “Having been shortlisted so often I didn't expect to win so I actually told my publishers that I wouldn't be going along to the awards because my doctor had said you're not allowed out with people … the risk of infection’s too great,” he said.

“Awards are always wonderful. Writing is a very isolating profession, and you spend most of your time by yourself… they let me out of my box once a year to promote a book, and then I go back into my box and keep writing. “(In the end) they pushed the awards late in the night, and they rushed me in and rushed me out again, so I didn't really get a chance to celebrate with anyone or to celebrate with my publishers. “I was sort of in collecting the award, making a speech and getting the hell out, so I couldn't really enjoy the moment, but it was tremendous for me because it had been a really difficult five weeks since the surgery and the whole issue had been such a surprise from the beginning … (the award win) came at just the right time really.” Having made the long list again for this year’s awards, Robotham may soon have a second opportunity to relish that feeling of success, although with a strong list of finalists the ever-so-humble author has laughed off his chances of going back-to-back. Regardless of the result, Robotham has already picked up his fair share of nominations and awards during his 15-year career as a novelist, including the UK’s prestigious Crime Writer’s Association Gold Dagger Award, which he won in 2015 for his thriller Life or Death. “I’d been a bridesmaid five times, and I finally won one (Australian Book Industry Awards), and I’m glad I did because I look at this year’s long list and think I can’t imagine I’m going to win this year, it’s amazing (the quality of finalists),” he said.

“Awards are always wonderful. Writing is a very isolating profession, and you spend most of your time by yourself… they let me out of my box once a year to promote a book, and then I go back into my box and keep writing. “Little things like this, an award nomination or a short listing or a long listing, they put a little spring into your step when you go to your writing room every day, just to think you’re not writing in a complete bubble, there are people out there that are appreciating what you do.” There’s no doubt there are millions of people around the world who appreciate Robotham’s work. The former investigative journalist initially began his foray into the publishing word by ghost-writing autobiographies for people in the arts, politics, military and sport including former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, sixties music legend Lulu and top UK forensic psychologist and criminal profiler Paul Britton. Twelve of these titles became Sunday Times bestsellers. In 2002 a partial manuscript of his first novel, The Suspect, sparked a bidding war at the London Book Fair and has since sold more than one million copies around the world, having been translated into 24 different languages. Robotham has written a total of 14 crime novels to date, including his newest offering Good Girl, Bad Girl, which is due for release in July. (Continued next page) ►

fingerprints on the page. It would look and sound and feel exactly like the person I was writing for. “(Writing fiction) is much the same thing. You have to create a voice for this person, for your main character. Most of my novels are written in the first person because obviously my ghost-writing was first person and I became very comfortable with doing that, looking at the world through their eyes. When you create a fictional person, to me they live and breathe as much as any of the real people I’ve ever written for.

“It's not as though they're sitting next to me talking in my ear, but they do haunt me, you know because I don't plot my books in advance.

(Continued) He has garnered a dedicated following of readers, many of whom will no doubt be rejoicing this month when the Sydney-based author finally makes the trip north for the 2019 Newcastle Writers Festival. The festival runs from April 5-7 with a packed program of more than 90 free and ticketed events across various locations, including book launches, discussions, workshops and panels. Robotham will join around 130 authors, journalists, poets and artists who will converge on the city for the three-day literary showcase, with the stellar line-up including everyone from renowned Australian journalist Kerry O’Brien to feminist writer, broadcaster and public speaker, Clementine Ford. Robotham will make two appearances during the event, first discussing the key to creating his page-turners during The Thrill of It from 10am–11am on April 6 at The Playhouse in Newcastle, before heading out to the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre that night for a special Secrets and Lies session hosted by Maitland’s own renowned crime writer Barry Maitland. After having to cancel his appearances last year, Robotham said he is looking forward to finally returning to a region that has had many fond memories for him over the years. “I’ve got good memories of the area; my father was the very first headmaster or school principal of Rutherford High when it opened in Maitland, and while I’d left school by then my parents obviously moved to Maitland, and I used to go and visit them there,” he said. “He’s passed away now, but I think dad was there all the way until he retired, and so when I’ve done events up in Maitland and Singleton and Newcastle people have come up to me saying things like ‘Did your father play golf at the Maitland Golf Club?’, and ex-teachers and ex-students have come up and asked me whether I'm related to Kevin Robotham. 14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

“I’ve always had great crowds when I’ve gone up to those areas, and I think partly that’s because of that connection, that family connection I had there.” More likely the great crowds have been drawn to Robotham’s events for the chance to gain an insight into the mind of a crime writing master known for his innate ability to keep readers guessing to the very end. His two sessions at this month’s Writers Festival will delve into the complex plot twists and in-depth characters that have helped his books earn worldwide acclaim. Robotham credits his years as a journalist in Australia, Britain and America, and his time ghost-writing autobiographies, as having played a central role in his success as a crime writer. “I knew I wanted to be a writer from a very early age and I felt as though having grown up in small country towns I had nothing to write about. But working for newspapers, being a journalist, I was going to meet so many people and learn so many things and gather material that would help me one day, as a writer,” he said. “Every book I've written, every novel I've written has been, in some way, seeded in a real-life case that I either covered as a journalist or I read about – I still cut little newspaper stories out of the paper thinking, ‘Ooh, that's intriguing’. When I wrote Life or Death, that was based on two paragraphs about a man escaping from jail the day before he was due to be released that I cut out. It took me close to 20 years to think of a reason why someone would escape the day before they were due to be released and then I created a whole novel around that scenario, so, newspapers to me are vital. “So much of my knowledge about capturing the voice of characters and making characters live and breathe on the page, I learnt that skill from ghost-writing autobiographies with people and having to write their story and capture their voice so perfectly that nobody could recognise my

“When my protagonist or my main character, when they're in tremendous danger, I feel that danger and I can't sleep, and I forget to pick stuff up from the shops, and I'm consumed by this other world, this fantasy world in my head because I'm the only person that can save them. I have to work out how they're going to get out of that situation. So at that point, it becomes incredibly real. “I remember when a couple of times I've written books completely from the point of view of a female protagonist and my wife's had to come to terms with the fact that for 12 months I've been having an affair with another woman. And we'll be out to dinner, and she'll kick me under the table when she sees my eyes glaze over, and she'll say ‘You're with her, aren't you?’ because you’re constantly being drawn back to this other world you've created.” Readers will have to wait a few more months before they have the chance to be drawn into the latest world Robotham has created in Good Girl, Bad Girl. Until then they will have to hope he drops a few hints about what is to come during his two appearances at the Newcastle Writers Festival.

THE FESTIVAL Tickets for all paid events including Robotham’s Newcastle and Cessnock sessions are available now via the Newcastle Writers Festival website. The festival will kick off with a special literary trivia night fundraiser on April 4 at Foghorn Brewhouse, with all proceeds to go towards planning the 2020 event. A series of practical writing workshops and masterclasses will see the festival in full swing on Friday, April 5, followed by the official opening night event, with a heavyweight panel including awardwinning artist Ben Quilty, past president of the Australian Human Rights Commission Gillian Triggs and former NRL player, champion boxer and mental health advocate Joe Williams discussing the people and experiences that have inspired them to speak out about various issues. Saturday and Sunday’s programs will cover everything from a behind the scenes tour of the Newcastle Regional Library archives to discussions around the ethics of artificial intelligence, the global refugee crisis and the world of online hate, with a packed schedule of events suitable for all interests. TOMATO AND BUCKWHEAT TART SERVES 6-8 FOR THE BUCKWHEAT PASTRY 80g sweet rice flour/glutinous rice flour 80g buckwheat flour 25g cornflour ½ teaspoon xanthan gum ¼ teaspoon sea salt 80g unsalted butter, cut into pieces and chilled 4 tablespoons ice-cold water

GREAT FOOD

Gluten-Free! Having a gluten intolerance, or Coeliac disease (pronounced SEElee-ak), is not only debilitating if a sufferer accidentally consumes gluten, it’s also really inconvenient, because the only effective treatment is a strict gluten-free diet. However, many locals know Bibina’s Warners Bay Foodie Warehouse stocks a huge range of gluten-free foods to help you maintain a more conventional lifestyle. Gluten comes from various proteins in wheat, barley and rye, and sometimes oats (although most Coeliac sufferers can eat oats). Sufferers have their small intestine damaged by the proteins in the gluten and it can result in malnutrition and osteoporosis. Of course ruling out gluten from your diet means a huge range of foods need to be avoided – unless you seek out specific products made to replace the usual fare. Bibina stocks a huge range of gluten-free pantry staples like pasta, flour, bread, bread crumbs, peanut butter, pastry shells and breakfast cereals. Often it’s kids who suffer the most from a gluten intolerance, with many diagnosed at a very early age. Of course that means they are going to miss out on many treats and kid’s foods, so Bibina helps replace those items with gluten-free biscuits, snack foods, waffle cones, ice cream, dessert sauces, chicken nuggets and chicken tenders.

Convenience foods are often packed with gluten, but Bibina does carry gluten-free pies, sausage rolls, garlic bread, party pies and apple tarts. A new line of Chinese Garden meals and starters has recently arrived at Bibina, including spring rolls, Sweet & Sour Pork, Satay Chicken and lots more. How do you know if you’re gluten intolerant? If you suffer from abdominal pain even occasionally, have trouble gaining weight, feel bloated, commonly get mouth ulcers? All these symptoms are commonly associated with Coeliac disease. If you suffer any of these symptoms, see your doctor. Cooking for the gluten intolerant can be a challenge, although being able to replace many conventional foods with gluten-free options can open up a sensational range of tastes and flavours. From meat seasonings, salad dressings, cake, muffin and dessert mixes to heat-and-serve Indian meals, relish, marinades and lots, lots more, it’s now not so hard to be gluten free and still enjoy great meals, snacks, desserts and convenience foods.

Coeliac Symptoms • • • • • • • • • •

Diarrhoea or constipation Weight loss Nausea Flatulence Stomach pain/cramping Tiredness or lethargy Mouth ulcers Skin rashes Bruising easily Irritability

FOR THE FILLING 120g shallots, chopped 1 tablespoon butter pinch of granulated or coconut sugar several sprigs of thyme, chopped 120g goat’s cheese, crumbled 4 large beefsteak tomatoes, thinly sliced, horizontally 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 20g basil, leaves picked and chopped 15g tarragon, leaves picked and chopped ½ tablespoon runny honey As mentioned in the introduction, despite its name, buckwheat is a good friend to the gluten-free cook as it’s made from a fruit, not wheat – confusing, eh? Its earthy, nutty flavour and darker colour makes it the perfect backdrop to the rich tomatoes, tangy goat’s cheese and sweet caramelised shallots. Pretty dreamy. 1. To make the pastry, combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub in until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the iced water slowly and mix by hand, until the mixture comes together to form a smooth ball. Roll out the dough to fit a 22cm loose-bottomed tart tin. 2. Lift the dough using a rolling pin and gently place into the tin. Press firmly into the tin and trim off any excess pastry. 3. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes before baking. 4. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. 5. To make the filling, caramelise the shallots in a saucepan with the butter and pinch of sugar over a medium–high heat for 8 minutes and set aside to cool slightly. 6. Remove the tart case from the fridge. Spread the caramelised shallots and thyme on the bottom of the case and sprinkle with some of the goat’s cheese. 7. Place a layer of tomatoes on top and add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and some basil and tarragon. Repeat the layers to fill the tart, finishing with a layer of goat’s cheese and a drizzle of honey on top. 8. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden and the pastry is cooked and beginning to pull away from the sides of the tin. Cool before serving.

A WHOLE LOT ON OFFER FOR MUSIC LOVERS WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

With the 2019 Gum Ball just around the corner, excitement levels are rising for punters and performers alike – and with good reason! This year’s festival is set to be bigger and better than ever. Running across three huge days from Thursday, April 25 to Sunday, April 28, the Gum Ball celebrates its fourteenth year

with a huge lineup of musicians and other performers, food and market stalls, kid-friendly activities and loads more. Two of the biggest musical drawcards this year are legendary Australian singer-songwriter Tex Perkins and former Newcastle band The Hauntingly Beautiful Mousemoon, who are getting back together for a one-off show, especially for the Gum Ball. Most music-lovers will know Tex Perkins as the frontman of band The Cruel Sea. While he’s bringing a new act to the festival this year – Tex Perkins and the Fat Rubber Band, a ‘swampy blues’ project with guitarist Matt Walker – you can also expect to hear some Cruel Sea material. It’s a set you really won’t want to miss, so make sure you get over to Stage Two at 9:40pm on Thursday 25th. Hunter Valley music-lovers are in for a nostalgic trip back to the turn of the century with the reformation of Novocastrian five-piece The Hauntingly Beautiful Mousemoon. Old and new fans alike will have the chance to revel in Mousemoon’s spellbinding brand of progressive rock. “All five of us were very flattered when the Gum Ball crew approached us to do a one-off reformation,” says Mousemoon drummer The Duke (a.k.a. Erling Grønhaug). “We were a band that never really ‘made it’ on any level that would be recognised in the music industry, so to be asked to reunite after 12 years is a testament to what we created.” Lucky Gum Ball-goers will be treated to a magical show on Friday evening at the festival. “I have played and performed with many great bands and musicians over the years,” says Duke, “but to me personally (and, I daresay, to the other guys in the band as well), Mousemoon is the only group I have been in where I truly felt like I was part of something magic… I mean, like, actual magic!” While the five-piece sadly parted ways all those years ago,

they’re still on great terms and are especially excited to have the Gum Ball as the venue for this special reformation gig. “In many ways, I think we were just too young to understand how to harness that [magic], and when it got too hard we decided to part ways in the end so as to retain lifelong friendships,” says Duke. “I think it is only fair to say that we hope that the magic can be revisited, and I could not imagine a better place to do that than at a fantastic family-friendly outdoor festival in the bush! We will do everything we can to bring a spectacular show and hope everyone will join us for this very special and nostalgic moment in our lives.” Along with Mousemoon and Tex Perkins, there’s a whole lot on offer for music lovers of all persuasions. You’ll be treated to the sounds of Sampa the Great, Magic Dirt, Mojo Juju, Augie March and loads of other artists, both local and international. Plus, there’s studio space The Tractor Shed, yoga, workshops, great food, market stalls… And to top off the family-friendly element, there’s childcare available for kids between three and thirteen years on Friday and Saturday nights. The Gum Ball is held at ‘Dashville’ in Belford, Hunter Valley. Gates open at midday on Thursday 25th and the festival closes at midday on Sunday 28th, with ‘Sunday Wind Down’ available as an optional extra ticket for those who want one more night of camping and music. Gum Ball tickets are available from ticket partners Humanitix (but be sure to get in quick!), with booking fees supporting youth mental health organisation ReachOut. THE SPIEGELTENT NEWCASTLE Returns in 2019 The party to end all parties comes to town next month when the world-renown Spiegeltent returns to Newcastle's Civic Park for another huge month of top-shelf comedy, music, cabaret, dance and much more from Thursday 23 May until Sunday 16 June 2019. The four-week festival is headlined by the seductive new cabaret extravaganza, Deluxe Deluxe, from the awardwinning creators of Blanc de Blanc that enthralled audiences at The Spiegeltent Newcastle in 2018.

It’s a side-splittingly funny, sexy and definitely adultsonly variety-spectacular that is sure to entertain and enthral audiences. Deluxe Deluxe is hosted by world-renowned artist, Scot Nery (HBO Comedy Festival and TV’s The Tonight Show) and features the glitterati of international circus and cabaret talent including aerial artist, Penelope Elena from Germany; the witty vocal stylings of, Laura Hughes and rule-bending ‘invertebrate’, Anthony Rodriguez (both from the USA); Australian exotic temptress, Zoe Marshall; the beautifuldangerous tigress, Ailona from Russia and the UK’s dropdead-gorgeous, Busola. “After Newcastle couldn’t get enough of Blanc de Blanc last year, we’re excited to announce that the Spiegeltent is returning with an even crazier headline show,” said Strut & Fret’s Founding Director, Scott Maidment. Deluxe Deluxe promises to deliver an evening beyond even the wildest imagination, but the wider festival line-up offers a myriad of world-class comedy, music and cabaret acts as well. The most difficult decision will be choosing which shows to go to – or maybe just go to them all! “Added to this is a program of sensational music and big-name comedy – what more could audiences ask for? This is certainly a not-to-be-missed experience for 2019 that is already selling fast,” said Maidment. The program lineup includes American blues and roots sensation, Charley Crockett, who will be joined by Sienna Ferrell to make their Newcastle debut under the beautiful Victoria Spiegeltent. Australian comedy legends Wil Anderson, Dave Hughes, Matt Okine, Rhys Nicholson and Joel Creasey, are also part of this year’s stellar line-up performing at The Spiegeltent Newcastle.

FROM ZOOKA TO MAJOR LEAGUE

Hit a Home Run with Newcastle Baseball WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Did you know that Newcastle has a thriving baseball community? A lot of people might not – it’s quite the hidden gem on the local sporting scene. But across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens, over 65 senior and junior teams are regularly hitting the field in competitions run by the Newcastle Baseball Association. Established way back in 1932, the Association ‘thrives on family and community values’, providing a positive environment for kids and adults alike to learn and enjoy the sport of baseball. From the Mayfield Boomerangs to the Maitland Mavericks, the Belmont Seagulls to the Nelson Bay Strikers, teams are located far and wide, coming together between April and September each year for graded competitions. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays on a home and away basis. Adults can compete in Major League, Double-A, Minor League and Senior Women’s League categories, so there are opportunities for everyone – from professional players with their sights set high, through to those simply seeking a fun way to keep fit in a team environment. The premier senior competition is the Major League, played each Sunday and incorporating first and secondgrade games. Currently, teams from Belmont, Mayfield, Charlestown, Toronto and Wallsend compete in the Major League. And with those teams including players from the

Australian National team and the Australian Baseball League, as well as former professional and college baseballers, it’s no surprise that a high level of play is sustained in this competition. The Association’s other senior competitions are just as popular, with a grade to suit all skill levels. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth-grade categories and the Senior Women’s League present development opportunities for emerging players, as well as playing opportunities for those who are just interested in a social team sport. For younger players, the Association offers one of the best junior entry sporting programs in Newcastle. There’s T-Ball for the under-eights – an introductory form of baseball, where each batter hits the ball off a ‘tee’ adjusted to their height instead of it being pitched by a player. For kids under ten, there’s a game called Zooka, where the ball is ‘pitched’ from a special pitching machine. These junior entry options are ideal for introducing kids to the sport of baseball, giving them the chance to learn in a non-competitive atmosphere and setting them on a pathway of development towards Little League and beyond. For kids who show a particular interest or talent, parents might consider enrolment in the Association’s Junior Development Program. Open to children aged eight to twelve, the program involves ten weeks of special development for aspiring baseballers, teaching younger athletes how to train effectively and develop their skills. The program has been running for over five years, with many players going on to represent Newcastle and New South Wales in baseball or join the Hunter Academy of Sport. The Association also offers a representative program, providing talented junior athletes with the opportunity to play at a higher level, while continuing to develop their skills with a fully accredited coaching team. Junior representative players have the chance to play at state, national and even world series levels. With so many options available for both junior and senior players, baseball is becoming an increasingly popular choice for families around the region. This is something the Association takes seriously – as their website pledges: ‘All support will be given to ensure a positive experience for the entire family’. Taking a scroll through the team shots on the website and Facebook page, you’ll see some very happy campers – kids and adults alike! The Newcastle Baseball Association’s 2019 competitions commence the first weekend of April. Total and Permanent Disablement Insurance Claims WORDS JADE BOWDLER - Solicitor, Turner Freeman Lawyers Newcastle

Illness or injury is often unexpected and can leave someone unable to work. This can have devastating consequences for people and their families, especially for those who do not have insurance entitlements such as workers compensation or income protection. However, often people in these situations are entitled to make a claim for total and permanent disablement if their superannuation fund has taken out a group policy of insurance for their members. It may be the case that someone is unaware they are entitled to make a claim. However, it is well worth investigating, as if a claim is successful, it could make a significant difference in a time of financial hardship. For a claim to be successful, a person must meet the definition of total and permanent disablement contained in the insurance company’s policy. These definitions can vary, depending on the policy and insurance company. Usually, in order to be considered totally and permanently disabled, someone must be unable to work for approximately 3–6 months before making a claim, and (depending on the policy) be unlikely to work again, in either: 1. Their own occupation; 2. Another occupation for which they are reasonably qualified by way of experience, education and training;

3. Any other occupation at all. The former two types of policies are easier to satisfy than the latter. For example, take someone who has all their life worked as a Fitter, performing heavy manual work. Suddenly, they injure their shoulder and cannot perform heavy work anymore, and therefore cannot ever work again as a Fitter (what they are trained and qualified to do). However, it may be that they can later re-train into another industry, which does not involve as much physical work, such as bus driving or office work. They are likely to be successful in a claim where the policy is one of the first two types, as they are unable to work in their own occupation or another occupation for which they are reasonably qualified by way of experience, education and training.

Policies such as the latter, where the insurance company needs to be satisfied that someone is unlikely to work again in any occupation, are more difficult to satisfy. But these are still likely to be successful where someone has sustained a severe injury or contracted a serious illness, for example, if someone suffers a stroke and is unable to work at all. A common misconception regarding total and permanent disablement claims is that someone has to be severely physically disabled in order to lodge a claim. Much like the Fitter example above, if an illness or injury renders someone unable to work in their own occupation (but they can later retrain) they may very well be successful in a claim. The insurance company generally requires medical evidence regarding the injury or illness. Often, a person’s last employer will also be required to provide information about their last job role. A claim is significantly more likely to be successful if additional medical evidence and information is provided to the insurance company. If you have been unable to work due to injury or illness, you should obtain legal advice and enquire about whether your superannuation fund has taken out a policy of total and permanent disablement insurance. Turner Freeman is experienced in assisting people with the claims process and with making submissions to the insurance companies about why a claim should be approved. Having a lawyer assist you means you can ensure a professional is handling your claim correctly and submitting the most important and relevant information to the insurance company. You can also be confident that if any issues arise from the insurance policy, you have a lawyer to advise you about the best way forward. Jade is based in Newcastle and specialises in workers compensation, industrial deafness and total and permanent disability insurance claims.

Feeling Frazzled? You’re Not Alone! WORDS JASON BARTLETT - Partner, DFK Crosbie

Peace of mind for you and your business • • •

Accounting Business Services Audit

Superannuation (SMSF) Wealth Management Finance

Phone 02 4923 4000 Email theteam@dfkcrosbie.com.au

www.dfkcrosbie.com.au

It'll be mid-year before you know it. Remember those good intentions you had about being more organised? As the end-of-financial-year approaches, feeling frazzled about your tax is a common complaint for so many of us, especially if you have a business. Wouldn’t it feel great to break the cycle and know that you're paying the least possible tax, without the last minute stress before June 30? We asked Newcastle-based Accountant, Business Adviser and Strategist Jason Bartlett how you can go about it and we discovered some hot tips, especially for local business owners. Doesn’t everyone dread the end-offinancial-year and having to pay their next tax bill? Actually, no! That’s only the case if you’re caught in the cycle of playing catchup. At this time of year, I get calls from new clients who say they’re only just getting over last year’s tax bill and next years is coming fast. Often they’re quite stressed about how they’re going to pay it. They want to break the cycle, but they’re not sure how. Ok, so how do I break the cycle? Have a look at your current year figures now. Talk to your accountant or adviser. I guarantee you'll enjoy not having to worry about it at the eleventh hour. If you're in business, we want to be looking at your March result so we can start planning what your tax bill looks like. It’s no good doing this once a year. My rule of thumb is at least twice. My bigger business clients will do theirs four times a year, and that’s what makes them successful. Regular reporting, or

benchmarking, means you understand your business and can jump on any problems early. I'm a business owner, and cash flow is a real issue. Are there ways to get around this? Very few businesses have a lot of cash flow at this time of year simply because if they had it throughout the year, they most likely had something to spend it on. Cash flow is so important that most successful businesses are no longer geared up to do their tax planning in June. The culture has changed. From a business perspective, tax planning in June is a bit old-school. You’ve got to be doing it throughout the year. You mentioned regular reporting or benchmarking. Exactly what do you mean? If you want to grow and enhance your business, you’ve got to be looking at these things regularly. It’s a lot easier to make smaller changes more regularly than asking ‘how do I overhaul my business?’ in one hit. That’s a big ask. If I’m talking to clients four times a year, making two or three small changes each time, that’s significant. Do you have any general tips for business owners to minimise their tax? To be honest, paying too much tax isn’t the only thing you should be worried about. How is the business actually going? How do we help manage cash flow? Looking at your accounts in April, May and June will give you an idea of what’s in the pipeline. You can even benchmark against your own previous year’s results, especially if your business is a unique industry. That’s how you can break the cycle, lose the frazzle and start enjoying some peace of mind.

Jason Bartlett is a Partner at leading accountants and business advisers DFK Crosbie, which is proudly based in Newcastle. He's been helping small to medium business owners achieve their goals for more than 25 years.

What’s an Executor? WORDS SALLY DAVIES – Senior Associate, Jenkins Legal Services

An Executor is appointed in a Will to ensure that all of the deceased’s debts are paid and that their assets are distributed in accordance with the Will. Does an executor get paid? Not usually. That said, a Will can nominate an amount you’re to be paid in return for acting as Executor or state that you’re to be paid for your time spent in administering the estate. If the Will doesn’t provide for payment, you can apply to the Supreme Court for a “commission”; however, this is not usually approved if you are also a beneficiary under the Will. What if you don’t want to be the Executor? You can apply to the Supreme Court of NSW to renounce your position; however, this must occur before you have completed any of the Executor’s duties as otherwise this may not be approved. What does the Executor do? In general terms, the Executor will need to: • Determine location and value of the deceased’s assets; • Apply for a Grant of Probate (this is a Court order which confirms the Will is valid and formally appoints Executor); • Arrange for the release of the deceased’s assets and payment of estate debts and expenses (after Probate has been granted); • Prepare a distribution statement showing the funds that have been in your control and how they are to be disbursed; and • Distribute the assets to the beneficiaries in accordance with the will. If someone dies and you find yourself appointed their executor, we recommend you seek advice from a solicitor. Administering an estate can be complex and it’s important to get it right as you can be held personally responsible if you make mistakes. MEET THE MAKER No Limits to Individuality for

Bleeding Hearts Duo WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

There’s nothing quite like a bold statement earring to add interest to an outfit. Whether you’re after a pop of colour, an interesting design or an eye-catching pattern, the ladies from The Bleeding Hearts Club have got you covered with their unique range of handmade earrings. Madelyn Smith and Alexandra Binskin, the makers behind Bleeding Hearts, met while working at a large fashion jewellery retailer. It was a sign of things to come: a little over six months ago, in need of a creative outlet and a way to spend some spare time, the friends decided to try their hands at creating their own jewellery. After a little self-education through workshops and magazine tutorials, The Bleeding Hearts Club was born. “Things have really just snowballed from there through a process of trial and error,” says Madelyn. A scroll through the Bleeding Hearts Club Instagram page reveals an expansive range of earring styles and an abundance of colours, shapes and patterns. There are subtle studs and daring dangles, with countless colour schemes and all manner of different shape combinations. Each pair is crafted from polymer clay, a versatile material that’s particularly popular in jewellery-making. “We create and roll the designs; then pieces need sanding, drilling, detailing and glueing,” Madelyn explains. “It’s a bit of a process!” With a collection that ranges from attention-grabbing statement earrings to subtler pieces for everyday wear, there’s no one word to sum up the signature Bleeding

Hearts Club style. ‘Retro’ is one descriptor that has definitely been thrown around, but every pair of earrings they create is different – and really, there are no limits when it comes to the creativity and design process behind the brand. Past pieces have been inspired by everything from nature to fashion. You’ll find patterns reminiscent of snow gum tree bark; colours that capture the essence of the ocean, or the glitter of a galaxy; and designs that evoke the bold, multi-coloured geometric patterns of clothing brand Gorman. And that’s just to name a few sources of inspiration. “There are so many other amazing polymer clay makers who we get lots of inspiration from, but also artists, photographers and each other,” Madelyn elaborates. “We’re constantly sending each other photos of things to use for inspiration. Often one of us will make something new, and the other will become inspired to try it; things grow from there.” She adds that the pair love to hear from their customers, and will often experiment with recreations and twists on popular colour schemes or designs. So what’s in the pipeline for the future of The Bleeding Hearts Club? At the moment, the main focus is on creating as many pieces as possible for the monthly Olive Tree Markets. But there are also a few additional projects Madelyn and Alex dream of bringing into being – in particular, earring-making workshops to add a unique touch to occasions such as birthdays, hens’ parties or get-togethers. Currently, both women work full-time alongside jewellery-making. And with Alex also in the midst of planning a wedding and Madelyn busy completing further study, it’s a lot to juggle. But you’ll still find the pair at every Olive Tree Market, selling their colourful wares with a smile. In addition to market stalls, there’s also a Bleeding Hearts Club Etsy store, which is currently taking a short break. “It can be tricky having enough stock for the markets and to stock the Etsy store,” Madelyn explains. “But we are always keeping people updated via our Instagram, so that is the best place to get in touch with us if there’s something you're after.” Keep an eye out at the next Olive Tree Market for the friendly faces and fun earrings of the Bleeding Hearts Club stall, and visit @thebleedingheartsclub on Instagram to keep up-to-date with the latest designs. The Olive Tree Market is held in Civic Park, Newcastle with upcoming market days planned for 6 April, 4 May and 1 June 2019. Visit www.theolivetreemarket.com.au

LIVE YOUR LIST

PLANETS ALIGN

FOR TRIP TO ULURU WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON - Live Your Bucket List

For a long time, Macquarie Hills resident Nicole Stanton had felt a calling to visit Uluru. So when Nicole’s daughter was invited to be a guest runner in the Australian Outback Marathon, it was like all the planets had aligned to deliver her wish. “Uluru was on my bucket list. Though I never imagined the Red Centre would end up being my favourite tick and leave an everlasting impression,” Nicole said. Her daughter Tanisha as an aspiring Olympic Indigenous athlete was invited by Rob de Castella to run with the Indigenous Marathon Project. Knowing her mum’s yearning to see the rock, Tanisha invited Nicole to accompany her. “I always thought I would do it someday and when the trip came up, I was amazed. I had wanted to go for so long, and the feeling had been getting stronger. It was like Uluru was calling me, I needed to be there, and I was going.” Nicole was in awe from her first glimpse of the massive red sandstone monolith rising out of the desert. “From the plane, I saw the big rock, and it gave me goosebumps. I thought “wow” and then imagined how big it is underground.” Uluru was created over 600 million years ago; it originally sat at the bottom of a sea as an island mountain. It stands 348 metres above ground and reaches the height of 863m above sea level. Oval in shape, it measures 3.6kilometres long and 2.4km wide, with a circumference of 9.4 km. It is believed the bulk extends an estimated 2.5km underground. When Nicole arrived at her accommodation, a viewing platform caught her eye, and she decided it was going to be her first place to experience the majesty of the UNESCO site. “Being so near Uluru was incredible I could feel its energy – it was magical. It felt calming; I was at home.”

So captivated by its power and beauty, Nicole decided to watch every sunrise and sunset while there, but it was Uluru’s famous sunsets that most captivated her. “The colours of pinks, blues, yellows, oranges and pastel tones were spectacular. Though the reddish hue outshone it all, it has its own glorious glow.” A part of Nicole’s fascination with Uluru is her indigenous connection to the sacred site. For the past 10,000 years, the Anangu people have been in the Uluru area. To them, the rock is a place of a great power that includes being the universe’s centre and the home of the Earth Mother. “As an Indigenous athlete, Tanisha ran with the Indigenous kids in the marathon, then after we went to the mission. We were very lucky to meet elders and be blessed by a welcoming ceremony.” “During the walk around Uluru, I spent some time on my own and was struck by the serenity. It was just me, the birds and the rock’s energy. I was grateful to be there, alone and accept the gift of being part of this beautiful country, Mother Earth and her creations.” Being up close and personal, Nicole put her hands on Uluru and realised at that moment its power, magnificence and beauty. “From a distance, it seemed so smooth. Then up close it is so different with its dents and bumps. There are many changing faces - it is alive with its own personality.” Nicole is planning to go back with her immediate family – husband, daughters and parents – to spend more time and visit neighbouring Kata Tjuta, another item on her ever-growing list! “I actually have a bucket list, and I try and tick off one activity each year. However, as I cross off one, I seem to add another. So, it stays about the same size, and there still seems so much to do.”

Former Defenceman

Takes the Lead for Northstars

John Kennedy Jr will make the transition from the ice to the bench this Australian Ice Hockey League season as head coach of the Newcastle Rescue Northstars. Kennedy, a defenceman who wore #5 for the Northstars for six years, will take the helm of Newcastle's AIHL team in 2019, assisted by returning head associate coach Joe Theriault and associate coach Ray Sheffield. "It's an amazing honour to have been considered for the role. To actually get it is incredible," Kennedy said. "With an organisation like the Northstars, we're expected to win. We're expected to be one of the top four teams going into the finals each year. Our aim this year is getting back to that level of play that we know we're capable of, which we've already started working on. "Not only am I here to coach but I'm here to grow and develop players and grow and develop talent. I think that's my strength as a coach. I have a deep hockey background. I plan to use my experience, use my resources and apply it to the team. "I want to take our players to a new level, and I want to create a style of play that's more conducive to what the game is like today. "It's not so much you’re one position and hold one role. It's five guys on the ice together being able to fill in each and every position and being able to work as a unit. "That's the unique flavour that I can add to the team. Not only can I tell a player what they should be doing differently, but I can show them how to do it." Kennedy, who was born in the United States, first joined the Northstars as an import in 2013. He is now an Australian citizen. Aside from having played hockey for most of his life, Kennedy is a professional skill development coach specialising in power skating, shooting, puck skills and leadership.

He offers his development services through the National Sport Academy (NSA) of which he is a director. Northstars general manager Garry Doré said Kennedy's expertise in training and development made him a top choice when it came to selecting a new coach. "John was approached during the offseason as we felt that with his expertise in training and development as well as his hockey skills as a player (he played NCAA college and pro level hockey) - he would be a great asset to the coaching staff," Doré said. "Through the National Sports Academy, John has been developing ice hockey across Australia through camps focusing on high performance and development. His skill and performance knowledge is second to none. "We're looking to bring a lot of direction to the team this season. I have no doubt that with John, and Joey and Ray beside him, we will achieve our goals for the season and will continue to be the most successful organisation in Australian ice hockey." The Northstars introduced the associate coaching program to Newcastle in 2018. The concept was designed to encourage and develop coaching in Newcastle to assist with the development of the AIHL team and its success. "Joey and Ray did a great job in leading the team last season," Doré said. "With John, Joey and Ray leading the team I'm quite confident we're going to be a force to be reckoned with this season." Kennedy said he is now focusing on the "task at hand" and is enjoying working with Theriault and Sheffield in pre-season training. "I've only worked with Joey really for a few weeks, but he's phenomenal to work with. He bleeds Northstars hockey," he said. "Ray and his experience and his rapport with the boys is great, and he carries a lot of wisdom both on and off the ice." The Northstars will open the 2019 AIHL season with a doubleheader against Sydney Bears and Melbourne Ice at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on April 27 and April 28. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 25

Home Care Packages

And the Eligibility Criteria WORDS MICHELLE PAYNE - Anglican Care

The Australian Government’s Home Care Package program is designed to support older people who want to stay living at home. The Government subsidises the program, but you are asked to pay something towards the cost of the service. The amount you are asked to contribute depends on your income, assets and circumstances. The program has four levels of packages for different levels of care and support needs, with each level receiving a different amount of funding. The money is paid directly to the provider of your choice and can be used to buy hours of care or other support that suits your needs. The program provides long term support; therefore once you have a Home Care Package, you can keep it for as long as you need it. You may be re-assessed for a higher level if your needs increase. While Home Care Packages are meant for older persons (generally 65+), there are no citizenship or residency restrictions, although they are not meant for visitors to Australia or for people who need short-term care. Veterans who receive assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs can also be assessed for a Home Care Package. Why should I choose Anglican Care as the provider of my Home Care services? Anglican Care HomeLife is here to help you go on living independently in your own home for as long as possible. After all, you’ve spent a lifetime creating a home – it’s where you belong and where you want to stay. We are an innovative community and aged care provider, operating since 1956. We are a not-for-profit organisation 26 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

that operates aged care services and solutions for seniors throughout the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid-Coast Regions. While our focus and presence is local, many of our innovative ideas and programs have contributed towards improving the standards of aged care services nationally. We employ a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses and Allied Health professionals including Physiotherapists and Dietitians. This contributes to a collaborate model of care that places you at the centre of decision making about your care. We offer a range of support from entry-level services through to palliative care. This means you can transition to other services seamlessly within Anglican Care as your care needs change. Our Care Advisors will sit down with you to help clarify your specific goals and needs. This is an important step in getting to know you (and you get to know us) so that we can provide the best possible care and support. Then we develop a care plan that’s as individual as you are, taking into account everything that matters to you. The plan will include the details of what services you require to achieve your goals and how those services fit into your Home Care Package. If you haven’t applied for a home care package, we can assist with that too. Plus, for those waiting on the national queue for a Home Care package, we now offer a new service called HomeLife Assist which can help you access services now. Our HomeLife consumers can also have access to our various Lifestyle and Wellbeing Programs such as ‘Rene’ our mobile resource van. VETERAN FOOTBALLER

Fighting Fit for the Jets WORDS DECLAN PAYNE

At age 34, most professional sportspeople would be thinking of winding down and bringing their careers to a close. But that’s not the case for a footballing veteran who’s in the form of his life for the Newcastle Jets. In early-March, Nikolai Topor-Stanley signed a new two-

year deal to take him through until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2020/21 season. It’s an incredible showing of faith in his ability to stay fit – he’ll be 36 by the time his latest deal is done and dusted. As of March 15, Topor had racked up an incredible 63 consecutive appearances for the Jets across two spells with the Club (2009–12 and 2017–present). In those 63 successive appearances, nearly half of his 131 in total for the Jets, the tough-as-nails centre-back hasn’t missed a minute of football. When asked about the secret to his durability though, Topor joked that if he told you, he’d have to kill you. “It’s something I learned along the way. You can’t leave any stone unturned if you really want longevity in this game,” Topor-Stanley said. “It’s something I try to put into practice every day, we’ve got a great staff here, and I can’t take all the credit. They look after me, and they’re keeping me in good shape.” Despite his nearly-300 games in the Hyundai A-League throughout spans at four different clubs, the four-time Australia representative has amassed a trophy cabinet that would be the envy of many. Inside you’ll find a Hyundai A-League premiership medal and AFC Champions League medal (both with the Western Sydney Wanderers), as well as three PFA (Professional Footballers Association) Team of the Season gongs. Missing from the collection is a Hyundai A-League championship medal – despite three appearances in the "big dance". That particular award has eluded him. His side, the Newcastle Jets, went oh-so-close last year in a memorable decider at McDonald Jones Stadium which was lost in controversial circumstances. While the side hasn’t quite hit the same heights as it did

last season at this point, the finals are still well and truly in reach for the Newcastle Jets – and Topor has the belief. “I haven’t won an A-League championship yet. That’s the glaring thing missing from my CV, and I’m looking forward to changing that,” he said. “I’m in a good space at the moment. I feel like compared to my early 20’s I’m stronger; I’ve learned to pick my battles, and I’ve put myself in a good position to succeed. “Of course [we can still make it]. There’s no giving up here; we understand that it can go down to the wire, and look at [Melbourne] Victory last year. “They flew under the radar all year and ended up winning the Grand Final, that’s how the league is set up to be.” And with the way the Hyundai A-League finals series works, it’d only take the Jets sneaking into sixth place to put themselves right in the mix for a shot at glory. There’s been criticism around some parts about performances this season, but things are starting to click at the right time for the Ernie Merrick-coached side. A run in the league of five games unbeaten throughout February and the beginning of March has all the hallmarks of the one thing which Topor-Stanley has identified as key to cracking the top six. “Consistency. It’s something that we’ve lacked, we’ve dominated in patches but not scored, then maybe been dominated and conceded,” he said. “It’s a sign of a good team when you can play badly and win, or concede possession and win, and that’s something we did, especially against Melbourne Victory. We stuck to a simple shape, and got our rewards in front of goal.” The Jets play two games at home in April: Saturday 6 against Western Sydney Wanderers, and Saturday 27 against Sydney FC. Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses. It can affect people regardless of their age or circumstances. Reported increases in depression worldwide cannot be due to a reduction in the stigma associated with mental illness. It seems more likely that it is associated with significant social and lifestyle changes that have taken place over the last 20 years. The good news is that depression is treatable. At the same time, depression is poorly understood, and this might prevent people from recognising the warning signs, resulting in them not seeking help. So, understanding depression is important. What are the symptoms of depression? Depression involves a marked decline in mood, negative thoughts and feelings, and social withdrawal. Other common symptoms are anxiety, disturbed sleep, changes in appetite, sudden weight loss or gain, lethargy, difficulty thinking clearly and memory problems. Depression is associated with a pattern of coping called avoidance. This results in isolation, inactivity and social withdrawal. Avoidance reinforces negative thinking and a sense of failure. This can lead to a sense of helplessness and hopelessness. What causes depression? Although there is no single cause for depression, there are factors that place some people at more risk than others. These include: • Experiencing loss, trauma or adversity • Chronic pain • Perfectionistic thinking – having overly high expectations of ourselves and others • Poor social skills that make forming and maintaining social relationships difficult • Thinking patterns that make us vulnerable • Lifestyle and diet Thinking patterns that make us vulnerable Depression is associated with rigid patterns of thinking, involving a preference for black and white answers to problems that are more in the “grey” zone. The ability to navigate the grey

zone requires us to make judgements that take into account important context information relevant to our circumstances. How we do this is determined by our Attributional Style. This refers to how we interpret and respond to events in our life. It affects how we feel about ourselves and others, and the decisions we make. The following examples demonstrate different attribution styles. Attributions Matter... • I always fail versus, I made a mistake that time • I can’t do anything right, versus, I’ll do better next time • This is too risky, versus I can give it a go • No one likes me, versus I can grow my social circle • I need others to like me, versus my opinions count too • Things never change, versus things can change Lifestyle and diet There is increasing evidence that points to the importance of lifestyle habits. It has been clearly demonstrated that exercise has an anti-depressant effect. Exercise is, therefore, a preventative factor and can be very helpful for reducing mild to moderate depression. One of the most interesting areas of current research is the relationship between diet, the gut and mental illness. A very important hormone – serotonin – is manufactured in the gut from the food we eat. We need serotonin to think. Sluggishness, poor mental clarity and memory problems are all features of depression. Like exercise, our dietary choices impact our capacity to live active, engaged lives as well as healthy ageing. Children’s brains and minds are having the foundations for adulthood laid, as they eat. Commenting on the negative effects of high-sugar diets, neurologist and author Dr David Perlmutter said: “if we want to care for our minds, then we have to be mindful about what we eat”. Depression is more than the mind. Treating Depression Depression is one of the most treatable mental illnesses. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps a person to understand and change thinking patterns and habits. Depression can occur with other difficulties such as chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders. Sometimes these need to be addressed first, and this may involve other tailored treatments. It is therefore important to seek assistance from a qualified professional, who can complete a thorough assessment and put together an individualised treatment plan. Functional Training WORDS REMMIE COCKRELL – Urth Fitness Newcastle

Functional training has become a very popular term in the fitness industry in recent years. But what exactly does functional training mean? Isn’t all training performing some sort of function? Yes, it is. However, functional training, as it pertains to improving your fitness is a little more subtle than that. Functional training conditions you to perform the actions of daily life more effectively and efficiently. The main focus of functional training is a way to maintain or improve an individual’s quality of life. Think of functional training as training an entire movement not just a specific muscle. Functional training should be thought of in terms of a movement continuum. Humans perform a wide range of movement activities every day, such as walking, jogging, running, sprinting, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging. Every single one of these movements requires a smooth, rhythmic motion in each of the three cardinal planes of movement – sagittal, frontal and transverse. Isolating joints and muscles, train only the muscles, not the movements, resulting in less functional improvements. For example, squats have a greater transfer effect on improving an individual’s ability to stand from seated, than knee extensions. Therefore, functional training includes multi-joint and multi-muscle exercises, because more often than not we use the whole body during daily activities rather than individual body parts only. Using more than one muscle group at a time during exercise challenges the cardiovascular system to work harder, increasing cardio fitness levels as well as promoting: • Increased strength • Increased flexibility and coordination • Improved balance and posture • Reduced risk of injury • Increased calorie burn • Maximum workout efficiency

In a recent interview, Tony Gentilcore, a strength and conditioning specialist said that “for 90 per cent of people, 90 per cent of the time, functional training is the way to go, resulting in a greater neuromuscular and cardiovascular challenge and potentially greater gains, as well.” Training to improve functional strength isn’t just about increasing the force-producing capability of a muscle or muscle groups. Rather, it enhances the coordinated working relationship between the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. Exercises on the traditional strength machines are considered the low-end of the functional training continuum because they isolate muscles in a stabilised, controlled environment. Although these machine-based exercises are not the best way to transfer performance from the weights room to the real world, it doesn’t mean such exercises should be disregarded. For example, non-functional, single joint exercises can play a critical part in helping to strengthen a weak element that a person may have, to restore proper muscle balance, and therefore allows an individual to safely and effectively participate in functional training activities while also reducing the risk of injury. In short, functional training helps you build strength, power, and mobility that translates beyond the gym. It’s “real world” fitness, which is why functional training is great for everybody. Whether you are just starting out in fitness or a seasoned athlete, adding some functional training to your life can be beneficial to your day to day life. Urth Fitness offer function training classes – PowerCamp. Why not try out one of our PowerCamp classes, run by our exceptionally educated trainers, who stand by the philosophy of the truth, science and passion, to develop the best program for your needs and ability. Ok, so it has been another hot Australian Summer. The hottest according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Maybe you love the sun in summer and spent a lot of time at the beach. Maybe you were planning to be sun-safe, but it didn’t really happen. Maybe you didn’t lie out in the sun, but just by “ being outside” you seemed to get tanned or burnt. Maybe you really did try hard to protect your skin but are still seeing some new pigmentation in your skin. It is very common to get to Autumn and notice darker brown spots than you had before, or more brown spots. This is called pigmentation – your skin cell’s reaction to damage from UV light. Picture those poor little stressed cells trying to cover themselves up with an umbrella of pigmentation. It can look like freckles, it can be “sun spots”, or “age spots”, or it can be melasma stirred up by the sun, or just the heat! (You probably know that a tan is actually your body’s reaction to sun damage.) Whatever the exact type of pigmentation, the result is that your skin looks less bright, “muddier” or duller. That’s because when the light hits the surface of your skin and is reflected off, it isn’t bouncing off cleanly. It is rattling around, bouncing off all the pigment, different light waves being absorbed by the brown spots. If you have some white spots scattered over your sun-damaged skin, that’s where your pigment-making cells have become so damaged that they have thrown in the towel altogether! So, how can we repair this damage? In our skin, we have enzymes whose job it is to fix UV damage to our DNA. Yes, sun damage is actually damaging and changing the DNA inside our cells. Often the amount of damage we have done to our cells is more than our own body can repair by itself. After the age of 30, the amount of the repair enzymes that we have starts to drop off, so we have more trouble keeping up with the necessary repairs. Of course eventually, skin cancers can appear. Remarkably, scientists have recently discovered how to make DNA repair enzymes in a way that can be absorbed through our skin, from skin cream. Dr Ronald Moy, an American dermatologist, was one of the world leaders in this field with his DNA Intensive Renewal Skin Care, based on concentrated DNA Repair Enzymes and supported by years of research. Rationale Skin Care is an Australian company that keeps ahead of the game with the best skin changing ingredients.

They have DNA repair enzymes now included in several of their products. Both of these products are available at The Mayah Clinic in Lakelands. If you want faster results for your skin, you could consider more active treatments to break up the pigmentation. A favourite treatment for this, at The Mayah Clinic, is Broadband Light or BBL. This treatment is related to IPL technology – an extension of that kind of light therapy. This is not a laser, despite IPL being sometimes incorrectly advertised as a “laser” treatment. It is a process of filtering light in a way that doesn’t burn skin, but does heat up and treat pigmentation, redness, broken vessels, dark hair and stimulate new collagen. Large studies in California have shown that people who have 2-3 BBL treatments a year, after five years, had clearer skin, fewer lines and less sagging than they had originally. In other words, healthier skin! Further investigations showed that BBL affected cell DNA resulting in “younger functioning” of that DNA. Talk about exciting stuff. With BBL we can treat brown spots, redness, vessels, hair, boost collagen and reduce pores all in the one multi-pass treatment session. (Remember with all devices for skin treatment, the machine is only half the story – you need a professionally trained clinician who knows how to use it too!) Of course, many other devices can be used to improve pigmentation and clear skin. Fractitional Lasers like Halo are an example. Even Microneedling with active serums used during treatment can result in pigmentation changes. The key thing is to have your skin assessed properly before embarking on any treatment plan. Melasma, for example, is a type of pigmentation that acts differently to the other solar spots. It can be made much worse by IPL or BBL used without appropriate pre and post-treatment care. And you need to be sure any dark spots are not a melanoma skin cancer! If an inexperienced person were to zap the colour out of a melanoma, that could delay diagnosing a deadly disease. So, get on to it! Use the cooler months to really build your skin health and learn about how to look after your skin all year round. The Mayah Clinic is a professional boutique skin care clinic in Lakelands. They provide a wide variety of beauty treatments, skin care, cosmetic medicine and laser, cosmetic tattooing, Emcyte Pure PRP and Vaginal Rejuvenation.

When it comes to exercise and weight loss, there are plenty of ways to track your progress. There's the scale, which is probably the easiest and most accessible, but there's a big problem.. the scale can lie to you about your progress. How many times have you stepped on the scales expecting to see dramatic results, only to be disheartened by the number that appears? Well, you’re not alone. That’s why experts along with everyday Novocastrians are moving away from the old school method of measurement. The scale measures everything—every sip of water, every bite of food, your bones, muscles, organs, fat. There's no way to distinguish between what you're gaining or losing. Marc Hingston, Personal Trainer at Genesis Cooks Hill, says that kilograms are only a small component of your overall wellness. “If your goal is to lose weight (lose fat mass), increase muscle (lean mass) or both, then it is extremely important to accurately track changes in your muscle and fat tissue.”

TRUE BODY MEASUREMENT SCAN

Hunter Imaging Group are a local and trusted radiology provider that can help you track your progress by measuring your body’s muscle mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density. Dr Demetrius Voutnis CEO and Specialist Physician at Hunter Imaging Group recommends a body composition scan as the latest technology for monitoring weight loss in a healthy way. “Measuring body composition allows you to see how your body changes over time even if your weight stays the same. This information is also useful for people who are happy with their weight but would like to achieve a more toned physique. Body composition is expressed as a percentage of body fat and lean muscle mass.”

So what does it involve?

TBM is a short scan performed on a DEXA scanner (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry). It is a highly accurate measure of Body Mass Index (BMI).

It’s a Skill to Balance

Art and Science

Demand for cosmetic procedures continues to grow as noninvasive treatments are becoming more widely accepted as an easy and affordable alternative to combatting unwanted signs of ageing, the most common procedures focusing on wrinkle removal and smoothing skin with enhancing injections. Muscle relaxers are used to target wrinkles or fine lines on the forehead and around the eyes. Dermal fillers are designed to enhance fuller lips and pad out hollow cheeks and eyes. Rather than just smoothing or tightening skin, they can change the facial profile to a more youthful one. According to leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Anoop Rastogi;

the best results are produced by advanced anti-wrinkle cosmetic techniques that require the artful and precise placement of injections which help to rebalance facial muscles. Dr Rastogi was one of the first medical doctors to introduce and administer wrinkle relaxing treatments in Australia. His advanced training experience includes working with some of the world’s best cosmetic surgeons in Rome, Paris, London and Cambridge, as well as being part of an international panel of medical experts for administering wrinkle relaxers and fillers. The Newcastle-born cosmetic specialist is frequently asked for industry and media comment and sees his roles not only as a surgeon and an artist, but also an educator. What exactly are injectable muscle relaxants and how do they work? “Injectable muscle relaxants are a purified protein, a medicine that removes lines and wrinkles from the face by relaxing the overactivity of the muscles causing the lines. With precision placement, they can also be used to rebalance the facial muscles and produce a more youthful appearance to overcome the often undesirable ageing effects of gravity.” Are anti-wrinkle injections safe for wrinkle treatment? “Yes, most certainly. The procedure has been used for many years in medicine without any cumulative or long term side effects, so we know it is safe.” Why do people seek wrinkle treatment? “Largely because people are much healthier these days! The physiological age and lifestyle at 40, for example, is comparable to that of a 30-year-old. However, when someone looks in the mirror, what they see is sometimes not consistent with the way they feel on the inside. “The essence of facial harmonising is to maintain the

positive expressions but relax away the negative ones to provide a more youthful and attractive aesthetic balance. Cosmetic injections aim to highlight the positive character, maintain natural expression, and erase the negatives through balancing the extent to which we erase the lines. “The frown line between the eyes (glabella lines) on the other hand, are negative and often less attractive expression lines. These lines can sometimes misrepresent a happy person whose brow furrows when they think, talk, or face the sunlight. Injectable muscle relaxants help to remove the unwanted, negative expression, leaving a more pleasant and serene look to the face.” What are some of the most common problem areas? “Frown lines, crows feet, heavy and tired eyes are high on the list. A droopy mouth with deep creases can be treated while plumping up smoker lines around the mouth can be easily remedied. Treatments to create fuller lips and address drawn, sunken cheeks are also in high demand. How can I be sure I’m in good hands? “It really is important to check the experience and expertise of your cosmetic specialist and to choose wisely, because patient safety should always be the highest priority. “There is an art and a particular science applied to balancing anti-ageing facial harmonising. Under skilful hands, you can boost youthful beauty, maintain natural expression and erase negative and ageing features from the face. “It really is about enhancing one’s already natural beauty.”

Starkey Hearing Technologies incorporated significant new inventions to avoid falsepositives and flag only true falls. “I have always dreamed about making a monumental positive impact on society,” said Bill Austin, Founder and CEO of Starkey Hearing Technologies. “Livio AI and it's Fall Alert feature will not only provide peace of mind to caregivers but could potentially save lives all over the world.” Livio AI is currently available in the U.S. and Canada and will have global availability in more than 20 countries in early 2019. For more information about Livio AI hearing aids, the Thrive mobile app and new Starkey Hearing Technologies accessories, please visit www.starkey.com.au. A LIFECHANGING Surgery

Have you ever experienced a change so dramatic that it changes your whole outlook on life? Not sure what we mean… well, let us tell you Lisa’s story.

Growing up as one of the ‘bigger’ girls, Lisa struggled with her self-confidence and body image throughout her teen years. She even remarks on her breasts as, “not your usual perky, pretty teen bust”. For Lisa, she knew it was going to take some major changes to be comfortable in her skin and as such embarked on the journey of losing 35 kilograms through diet and exercise. After changing her habits and finding a healthier lifestyle, there were still remnants of her past life that caused Lisa pain and discomfort on a daily basis. It also meant that there was a time limit on how long Lisa could enjoy her postworkout high before becoming uncomfortable. “I knew that there was a specific window between when I finished my workout and when I needed to be home, showered, dried and dress to avoid the awful rashes and pain that came with sweat on my skin.” 36 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

So, in 2012 Lisa made the decision to visit a plastic surgeon. The initial process was often distressing, as it meant showing a body that Lisa was still yet to be comfortable in. So much so, that after seeing one particular surgeon, Lisa was left deflated and more dismayed than ever. That is until she took the plunge and visited another surgeon, Dr Moncrieff. Dr Moncrieff made her feel at ease as soon as they shook hands and reflects that a feeling of calm came over her as she sat in his office. The pair even shared a tear or two in that initial meeting. Lisa ended up having a tummy tuck and thigh lift to remove the excess skin and tissue. That was seven years ago, and now Lisa is back to have her second surgery. “I knew all along that this process was going to be a long one,” Lisa shared. “However, it took some time for me to be in a position to be ready for this much-needed breast reduction, reshaping and lift.” Speaking with Lisa is an emotional process, and you can tell that this surgery means the world to her. Which is why, when Dr Moncrieff told her that he was going to perform the surgery at no out-of-pocket expense for her she was flabbergasted. “Things like this just don’t happen to me!” “I sat for a good twenty minutes with a goofy smile on my face, making a weird chuckling noise in utter disbelief. I still expect to wake up and have someone tell me I dreamt that meeting.” Hunter Plastic Surgery is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019, which is why the team decided to mark the occasion by giving away a plastic surgery procedure for ‘free’.

Dr Moncrieff and Lisa.

“Lisa’s story has stayed with me over the years, so when we decided we wanted to gift a surgery to someone, she was top of mind,” Dr Moncrieff said. “Lisa will have no out-of-pocket costs for this surgery, letting her finally find the complete self-confidence she has been looking for. This saves her over $10,000 on the usual surgery and hospital costs.” Another supporter of Lisa is her Dad. “He is my rock and my safe place. When I told him what was happening, he was more excited than I was,” Lisa continued.

“People who knew me pre-surgery say I have changed, and I proudly own it. I can honestly attribute the person I am today to Hunter Plastic Surgery and Dr Moncrieff. I wouldn’t be where I am, mentally or physically, without his help.” Since her first surgery, Lisa has become a vibrant young lady, buying her own home and moving up the corporate ladder at speed. Lisa believes that the first surgery completely changed her outlook on life and that this final surgery really will be the final step in her journey. But, it’s not only Dr Moncrieff that Lisa has high praise for. “The entire team are wonderful people. From the moment you walk in you are made to feel welcome and comfortable. Even now, if I see Dr Moncrieff or his team out and about, they will wave and say hello.” “Hunter Plastic Surgery is five stars in my opinion, and I have no hesitation in recommending them to everyone and anyone that will listen.” Dr Moncrieff and his team will welcome Lisa back at their practice for surgery in April for her gifted surgery.

Grow in Confidence and Self Belief WORDS BRETT CAMERON - Cameron Hypnotics

• Would you like to live a life with calm confidence? • Do you find yourself cringing instead of blossoming? • Do you hear a voice from your childhood or a school memory telling you that are not good enough or you are not deserving of success? • Has a loss of self-belief held you back in sporting or performance endeavours? Whenever I have a client seeing me to help them with a confidence boost, one of the first things that I will tell them is that they do not have a conscious problem. They have a subconscious problem. Consciously they want to be calm, confident and ready to tackle anything, yet subconsciously something is holding them back. It might be something that they cannot pinpoint or articulate. However, it raises a stop sign in their mind regularly, preventing them from achieving success. In simple terms, your conscious mind is your ‘thinking’ mind. Everything else happens in the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is where we access the automatic functions of the body. It is also where we store habits, behaviours, memories and emotions. If you walk into an environment where you have previously experienced failure, stress or anxiety, no matter how consciously determined you

are to have a positive experience, your unconscious mind will say “hang on, we’ve been here before. What did we do last time? Freak out, feel deflated, pump up the anxiety levels”. Without changing the brain’s wiring, it is more than likely that the old negative patterns will take over. So what can you do about it? This is about you being ‘in control’, not ‘out of control’. This is also about you being in the driver’s seat of change. Think of the following car analogy. Your brain is the engine. Your body is the body of the car. You are the driver. The engine is programmed and finely tuned to get the car from point A to point B. It doesn’t question the driver. It just does its job. Likewise, your brain is not judging you. It is acting on instructions from your emotions and reactions. Your brain is saying, “if you say so”. It is following instructions from you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you were able to change the wiring to put the old patterns into the past and to create new resourceful patterns? Effective Hypnotherapy allows you to access the unresourceful wiring, making the changes that you want so that you can confidently create new creative and resourceful patterns and behaviours. It takes seven days to create a habit. Another seven days to lock it in as a new behaviour. After 21 days you have created a new neurological pathway that allows you to live and behave with new self-belief and confidence. What erroneous patterns do you want to change? Most clients will experience amazing change after a tailored three-session program. Over three sessions of hypnotherapy, NLP and coaching, I will help the client to: • Gain a new awareness of self with new knowledge of the origin of behaviours. Leave it in the past. The past is the past. It’s gone. • Learn the power of disconnecting from the old negative wiring. • Gain confidence in communication. Learn to stand in your truth. • Be empowered to break through the old barriers. • Have a new toolkit of positive resources that will be with you forever. Are you ready to change the wiring to create a better version of you? I’ve created a 3 Session Confidence Booster program for $450 that might be just what you need to kick-start your confidence. Your Guide to the Best School Holiday Ever! WORDS MIA KYRIKOS

With the April school holidays nearing, it is hard not to feel the sudden dread that comes with the thought of trying to keep your energetic tribe busy for the next couple of weeks. While the promise of Easter and a basket full of chocolate eggs normally keeps the kids occupied, the question remains: How do you keep the kids entertained once the Easter bunny has officially left the building? Let’s face it; school holidays can be a tricky business. Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you! We’ve rounded up everything you need to keep the kids busy these school holidays. With a mixture of free and paid events for kids of all ages, you can be sure to beat the school holiday blues and keep the kids busy without busting the budget.

Newcastle Region Libraries Keen to get the kids off their phones these holidays? There is no better way than hitting the books! With plenty happening across the region’s network of libraries, look no further for boredom busting holiday activities that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Kicking off the holiday season, take the kids to visit Terry Denton’s The Many Story Treehouse exhibition at Newcastle library. Free of charge, kids can enjoy exhibition workshops that will explore the crazy ideas and stories developed with author Andy Griffiths. For those seeking the perfect family morning out, make sure to stop by at No Baths Week: Book Launch, Storytime and Dog Picnic on April 16. There is even coffee and stalls for the adults to browse (thankfully!).

The Many Story Treehouse at Lovett Gallery

If you have a budding artist on your hands, enjoy a bunch of free workshops that will let imaginations run wild. From crafty story time sessions to artsy colours and flair, kids will enjoy some seriously creative fun. There is even something for the tweens, with hands-on workshops that delve into the world of simple circuits or help them flex their creative muscles in the ultimate Lego challenge. The sky’s the limit these school holidays! Bookings for all activities are essential. To find out what’s on near you, check out www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au

Newcastle Art Gallery Looking for activities that will inspire a little cultural creativity? The kids are sure to delight when you head to Newcastle Art Gallery. Open every day of the school holidays (except Good Friday) from 10am–5pm; this is the perfect activity for both kids and parents alike. Wander the gallery and discover incredible exhibitions, or book into one of the awesome workshops. Inspired by the FLORIBUNDA exhibition, your little Monet can learn the delicate art of papier mache by decorating their very own flowerpot! The workshop will have three sessions daily from April 15–18, letting your kids creativity run free while leaving the mess out of the house.

Getting comfy at Newcastle Museum

Make sure you book the kids into the SODEISHA exhibition inspired Clay Nest workshop. Kids can get messy and enjoy a hands-on workshop that will teach them how to sculpt a nest out of clay. Three sessions will be running daily on April 23–25. If you are looking to keep costs at the minimum, then join in the fun of Art Cart. This is a free workshop led by gallery educators every weekend, where the kids can explore the exhibitions through discussion and art making! Both the Papier Mache Flowerpots and Clay Nest workshops are suitable for children aged 5–12, at the cost of $12 per person, with bookings essential. For more details visit www.nag.org.au

Newcastle Museum Just because school is on holidays doesn’t mean those little minds can’t keep learning! Head to the museum and keep the little minds busy with a range of exciting exhibitions, shows, and workshops. Kids of all ages are invited to learn about endangered flora at the awesome Pop-Up Garden installation. For those who have an interest in both science and drawing, enjoy the Illustrators Alive! Exhibit. Here, kids can get up close to natural history illustrators to see the magic behind the creation of their drawings.

Dahl’s Ultimate Showdown Live on The Playhouse Stage With a famous flourish, a vaguely criminal team of stooge farmers: “Boggis and Bunce and Bean. One fat, one short and one lean” wage war on a cunning band of frenzied colleges. Whatever their prowess as poultry farmers, their sole objective is the extermination of our hero--the noble, the clever, the Fantastic Mr Fox! Outwitted at every turn, the farmer’s ploys backfire, for Mr Fox devises a plan which will ensure full stomachs for not only his family but all his friends, who celebrate with a sumptuous feast. Hunter Drama is synonymous with presenting Dahl's most loved characters on stage, and now, following 2018’s highly successful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Newcastle’s Civic Playhouse stage will be transformed into the den and tunnels where Mr Fox keeps his family one step ahead of those dreadful farmers.

Out and About

Blackbutt Reserve Spending time together as a family is a great way to create some special memories of these school holidays. Get the family to Blackbutt Reserve for the perfect day out! Enjoy the Fantastic Phasmids workshop at the Wildlife Arena. With sessions running Monday to Friday ($5 per child), the kids will get crafty creating a stick insect to take home! While you are there be sure to enjoy an amazing reptile show or let the kids blow some steam at the new adventure playground at Richley Reserve. For more 42 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

At Warner Park, delight in stories, songs, and art under the trees at Art in the Park. Indulge in a bit of fun on April 17 at The Great Easter Egg Hunt within Swansea Swim Centre, and, later take the kids to enjoy the special Cats and Dogs, All at Sea exhibition in SEEN at Swansea. We also offer full day and 2-day horse riding camps for the teens (12-16 yrs old) where they will get to groom and feed horses, learn about looking after horses, saddlery, and of course ride! You could also enjoy a picnic (we have over 300 acres of great spots), utilise our BBQ facilities, enjoy a tractor hay ride to feed the animals, check out the kangaroos, hiking and mountain bike trails or sunset rides. Plus, don’t forget to visit our aviary to say hello to our birds, guinea pigs, goats and sheep. We have also recently introduced the new pedal go karts! An activity that is sure to keep the kids busy, and ready to hit the hay later on.

If you feel like staying a little longer, we offer great guest house and semi self contained villa accommodation, where kids stay free during school holidays! (Villas only). Be quick to book, as we have limited spots available. Hunter Valley Horse Riding & Adventures is really your one stop shop for an awesome school holiday experience that we know the kids will love.
